Samsung Galaxy S8 Pirates of the Caribbean Special Edition is actually a thing

0

Want to buy the Samsung Galaxy S8, but you don’t want to go for the standard models? How about getting the Microsoft Edition? No, it does not come with any special engravings, it just contains a bunch of Microsoft apps, but at least you will be able to tell your friends you have the Galaxy S8 Microsoft Edition, right?

If the idea sounds a bit cheesy, we have another suggestion. How about the Samsung Galaxy S8 Asiana Airlines Edition? Granted it’s available only in Korea and the only things that actually differentiate it from the “normal” Galaxy S8 is the special Asiana theme and an Asiana logo on the boot screen.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 special edition in its pirate box

But what if you crave something more ostentatious? Samsung has what you need. In order to celebrate the upcoming launch of the new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the Korean tech giant has launched a Galaxy S8 Pirates of the Caribbean special edition. Actually Samsung just put a case featuring the movie’s logo and a two skulls on a regular Galaxy S8. However, with the limited edition Samsung is also throwing a slightly modified UI for movie fans to take advantage of.

It appears this feature is applied automatically, once the case is clipped to the phone via an embedded NFC chip. What’s more, the Galaxy S8 Pirates of the Caribbean edition will ship out in a pirate box, alongside a gold ring and other movie-themed accessories.

We’re told the phone will become available in China, but so far there’s no word whether Samsung will launch it somewhere else or not. The whole Galaxy S8 Pirates of the Caribbean bundle will cost $44 extra than the regular Galaxy S8. We don’t know how many of these cases are going to be available.

We’re still waiting on an official announced from Samsung or Disney in order to be 100% the special edition is a real product.

LG offering its own Buy One, Get One deal for G6 through T-Mobile

1

The LG G6 hasn’t been out long, but LG has already partnered up with T-Mobile to offer a BOGO deal on its latest flagship.

UPDATE: Whereas the original T-Mobile deal for the LG G6 is no longer being honored by the carrier, we’ve got great news. Instead of dealing with the service provider, you can still get a free G6 with the purchase of another, but you’ll go through LG. Check it out!

If you purchase two new LG G6 phones in a single transaction, you qualify for a $500 rebate (e-Check via email). The phones are valued at $500 each so it’s essentially like getting one of them at no cost.

Simply head to https://www.lgrebates.com/LG-T-Mobile-G6-500 and fill out the details and you’re on your way to a refund. The promotion is already underway and runs through June 8, 2017. You must redeem before July 8 to qualify.

The Buy One, Get One Free promo is available between May 10 and June 8. So how do you get started? Grab two LG G6 units from one of T-Mobile’s authorized, participating locations in the US. Yes, you’ll have to pay for both, before submitting your rebate request to T-Mobile before July 8.

For easier processing, buyers can send the required documents including a completed request form, IMEI of both devices, a copy of purchase receipt and original IMEI label from the device’s packaging, online. Requests can also be mailed-in.

After documents get verified, the carrier will send LG G6 customers a $500 electronic rebate check by email. Note that it might take up to 6 weeks before the delivery happens.

While you can expect to pay $650 for a LG G6 in the US, T-Mobile is offering the handset for $500 – which explains why the carrier is sending rebate checks of $500 and not $650.

The LG G6 has been hailed as being a massive step forwards from the LG G5, but if you’re still uncertain whether two LG G6s would make your life better, we invite you to read our thoughts on the flagship.

[Update]: T-Mobile has issued an internal document addressed to store reps in which it states that the deal “has been pulled and cannot be honored.” There’s no reason given, but luckily T-Mobile’s alternate Galaxy S8 BOGO deal is here to save the day.

The Galaxy Note 8 will likely feature the same aspect ratio as the Galaxy S8

0

Now that the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus have been announced, Samsung can focus its efforts on a device with huge implications. The Galaxy Note 8 has already been confirmed to be launching later this year, despite speculation that the Note line would be a casualty stemming from the Note 7 debacle.

We are likely to hear more about the Note 8 in the months and weeks leading up the device’s official unveiling, and we now have an idea of what Samsung is looking to do. The rumor claims that Samsung is looking to pack a 6.3-inch display into the Note 8 while keeping an aspect ratio on par with the Galaxy S8 lineup (18.5:9).

We are expecting to see Samsung test some new features on the Note 8, which means we are likely to see a new dual-camera setup on the rear of the device. This was rumored to be coming to the Galaxy S8, only to be left out at the last minute due to various setbacks.

This set of rumors also suggests that the Note 8 will be powered by the Snapdragon 835 SoC, along with 6GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. Barring any other minor updates to Nougat, we should also be seeing Android 7.1.2 Nougat launched on the Note 8, with Samsung’s TouchWiz interface.

Finally, we are also expecting to see a 3,600mAh battery to keep the Note 8 running throughout the day. As expected, the Note 8 will continue to feature the famous S Pen, and will be getting an IP68 water and dust resistance rating.

Let us know what you think about this latest batch of rumors and if you are even slightly inclined to snag one for yourself this Fall.

The HTC U 11 gets the full leak treatment a day early

3

This week is going to be a rather hectic one for Android fans, as HTC is set to unveil its latest flagship tomorrow, and Google I/O 2017 kicks off on Wednesday. However, it seems that someone let the cat out of the bag a bit early regarding the HTC U 11.

Courtesy of DroidHolic

The folks at DroidHolic were able to get some hands-on video footage of the U 11, showing off a similar design to that of the HTC U Ultra and U Play. The U 11 is set to take on the likes of the LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy S8, while introducing some interesting new features.

Most notably, the biggest feature coming to the U 11 is the touch-sensitive frame for the device. This frame will allow you to squeeze the sides of your device to perform various tasks. These include opening Google Assistant, taking photos, and more.

What’s even better is that these “squeezing gestures” will be customizable. This means that you will be able to manually adjust how hard you have to squeeze the device to perform the tasks possible.

This leak also shares the full spec-sheet for the U 11, which has been up for debate in recent weeks. Here’s a look at the specs:

  • 5.5-inch Quad-HD display with 534ppi pixel density and Gorilla Glass 5 protection.
  • Octa-Core Snapdragon 835 Processor
  • Adreno 540GPU
  • 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM (6GB RAM & 128GB ROM for Chinese Model)
  • Up to 2TB Expandable Storage
  • 12MP rear camera with Sony IMX362 Sensor and f/1.7 aperture.
  • 16MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture
  • Up to 4K video via Rear camera while up to 1080p videos via Front Camera.
  • Android 7.1 Nougat with Sense UI
  • USB Type-C, NFC, GPS, Dual SIM, LTE and More
  • Edge Sense Technology and 360-degree Audio Recording
  • 3,000mAh battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0

These specs definitely line up with the likes of the Galaxy S8, but HTC has a lot of work to do to catch up to Samsung. With the official announcement coming tomorrow, let us know what you think about the device and if you’re interested in picking one up for yourself.

ASUS might pull de plug on its ZenWatch lineup

1

Albeit lackluster interest in the smartwatch category from behalf of consumers, more and more companies are flocking to launch intelligent timepieces. Back in March, Fossil introduced more than 300 new smartwatch models from its partner sub brands, in a bid to show users the smartwatch market is alive and kicking.

But a new report coming it today from the controversial Digi Times paints a different picture. It appears that ASUS – a company that has so far spawned the market with three ZenWatch models, will soon be taking its hopes of making profit somewhere else.

According to the report, ASUS is shipping only 5,000 to 6,000 units of ZenWatch monthly. Due to these low numbers, industry insiders expect ASUS to soon discontinue the product line. Which will be a pity given that ASUS’ ZenWatches are some of the most affordable Android Wear smartwatches around.

If the information coming from the hit-and-miss Asian publication turns out to be correct, Google will be left without another major hardware partner. If you remember Motorola decided to take an indefinite break from smartwatches, while Samsung is focusing its efforts on its Tizen lineup.

On the bright side of things, Google has also been gaining new partners this year. Actually ZTE might take ASUS’ place in the Android Wear ecosystem, as the Chinese company recently launched its first Android Wear smartwatch which is available for $199 from T-Mobile. Iconic watch makers like Tag Heuer and Movado have also joined the ranks of Android Wear 2.0 in 2017.

Google Store offers free case with a Pixel XL purchase

2

The Pixel and Pixel XL have been out and about for a few months and even though a Pixel 2 model might not be far from us, the two phones continue to be some of the greatest handsets currently available for purchase.

If you have been looking to buy a Pixel XL, now might be the best time to do so. Why? Well the Google Store is offering a free case with the purchase of a Pixel XL (with either 32GB or 128GB of storage). Customers can receive a free clear case (valued at $30) or a silicone case in Gray, Blue, Green, Peach or Coral that would normally take you back with $35.

Google started offering this deal this Sunday and it will continue to be available while supplies last. So if you want to get a free case, you best hurry up and place your order.

If you’re still undecided whether the Pixel XL is for you or not, you can go ahead and check our in-depth review.

For a quick reminder, the phone which launched in 2016 alongside the standard Pixel comes equipped with a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with 2560 x 1440 resolution. It harnesses the processing power of a Snapdragon 821 in combination with 4GB of RAM.

The Pixel XL carries one of the best smartphone cameras around – 12.3-mepapixel main snapper with f/2.0 aperture, as well as 8-megapixel. And naturally, since this is a Pixel you’re guaranteed to get timely Android updates, as soon as Google pushes them out.

T-Mobile has a limited time BOGO offer for Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+

0

We recently told you T-Mobile partnered up with LG to offer a BOGO deal on the LG G6. Unfortunately that offer has been withdrawn for some unknown reason. But no need to feel sad about it.

In the meanwhile, the Magenta carrier announced another Buy One Get One Free promotion, which is involves Samsung’s latest Galaxy S8 flagship.

Of course, there are a few conditions to take into consideration. For starters, the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ you buy has to be on an installment plan. You’ll also need to activate a new line. Even if you are an existing T-Mobile subscriber, you will be required to add a new line. New Magenta customers will have to jump onboard with the carrier’s One plan.

T-Mobile allows customers to purchase a combination of two Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ but we’ll have to warn you – you’ll receive your money back in the form of a prepaid MasterCard loaded with a maximum $750. So if you pick up two Galaxy S8+ units you’ll end up being compensated for only a standard Galaxy S8.

To make it clear, the deal involves paying full taxes for both devices and then paying monthly for the two phones for the next 24 months. The free part of the deal comes in the form of the rebate MasterCard.

Sadly, customers who already purchased a Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ are not eligible to enter the new BOGO promo. We don’t know how much the deal will run, but right now it’s active on the T-Mobile website. So you best hurry up!

Motorola’s alphabetical Moto product release road map leaks out

0

Over the weekend, we got the opportunity to learn more about the upcoming Moto X (2017) which by the looks of it will be sold as the Moto Z4 when it makes a debut later this year.

On top of leaking the Moto Z4’s logo, the prolific @evleaks also posted an image that was apparently taken during an official presentation (most likely dedicated to investor and industry VIPs) which reveals the company’s full roadmap for 2017.

If you’ve been following tech news lately, you probably already know that Motorola is expected to unleash an entire host of new products and here they are listed in their full glory, as follows:

Moto Z2 Play – 5.5-inch display with fullHD resolution, Moto Mods support

Moto Z2 Force – unknown diagonal, ShatterShield screen, Moto Mods and 1Gb LTE support

Moto X4 – 5.2-inch display with fullHD resolution, 3D glass dual-camera setup

Moto gS – 5.2-inch display with fullHD resolution, full-metal body

Moto gS+ – 5.5-inch display with fullHD resolution, full metal body

Moto E4 – 5-inch display with 720p resolution, 2.5glass, fingerprint scanner

Moto E4 Plus – 5.5-inch display with 720p resolution, 5,000 mAh battery

Moto C – 5-inch display with 480p resolution

Moto C Plus – 5-inch display with 720p resolution, 4,000 mAh battery

It’s interesting to note, the roadmap does not mention the standard Moto Z2 model. On top of that, it seems Motorola will launch two new phones from the Moto G lineup this year. The current Moto G5 and the Moto G5 Plus feature 5-inch and 5.2-inch display respectively, so the new Moto gS and Moto gS+ will probably be phones with similar internal configurations, but larger displays, but this is just a guess at this point.

Motorola fans are bound to be treated with a lot of interesting products this year, so we suggest you keep checking back with us on more developments on the topic if you want to be kept in the loop.

Google’s new Project Treble could mean fast Android updates for everyone

0

If you are not the owner of a Nexus or a Pixel device, then you probably stuck waiting for updates months on end after Google officially rolls out a new build. But as you’d expect, the search giant is well aware or the state of things and not particularly happy with the situation.

But starting with the Android O release coming later this year, Google plans to incorporate a modular base called Project Treble into its OS that could expedite the arrival of software updates on existing devices.

Based on feedback from device makers, Google notes that the current process of updating to a new Android version is extremely time consuming and costly, as it does not only imply implementing new code and optimizing the hardware to work with it, but also additional approval rounds. The whole procedure is outlined below:

After Google pushes out a new release, chip makers like Qualcomm or MediaTek have to modify the script for their own hardware, after which they pass it to device makers that incorporate the new software, as well as making their own set of changes. The next step is for OEMs to get approval for carriers before the update is finally send out. This complex queue of procedures ensures that updates reach end-users extremely late.

But with Project Treble in place, things could be a lot more straightforward. Google touts it as the biggest change to Android’s system architecture, as it aims to separate low-level code written by chip manufacturers from the Android OS codebase. This will in turn allow OEMs to send out updates by updating only code relevant to the OS without additional input from the silicon makers.

To achieve this end, Android will gain a new “Vendor Interface” which will sit between the Android OS framework and (Original)Vendor Implementation (device-specific, lower-level software written by most chip makers). While smartphone manufacturers, will still have to add their own features on top of the new Android release, Project Treble aims to bypass some of the steps that rely on chip makers’ assistance.

Google also notes it’s working to get its chip and OEM partners to bring their code changes, including bug fixes and new enhancements to the common Android Open Source Project codebase.

Project Treble is already available in the first developer preview of Android O on the Pixel and Pixel XL. It will also be onboard all new devices launching with Android O out of the box.

Cricket dials up the $150 ZTE Blade X Max

0

Prepaid service provider Cricket recently began selling its latest smartphone in the form of the 6-inch ZTE Blade X Max. Running Android 7.1.1, it can be purchased for $150; new Cricket subscribers can buy it for as low as $99 through a limited time promotion.

  • 6-inch full HD display

Because the phone runs 7.1.1 (Nougat), the Blade X Max gives users the latest and greatest version of Android palm of your hand from the very start. Not only does this mean the best in aesthetics and features, but also in security, too.
