Louis Vuitton’s first smartwatch targets well-to-do fashionistas who like to travel

0

More and more luxury fashion houses have taken an interest in smartwatches as of late and the latest to join the party is Louis Vuitton.

The high-fashion brand just introduced its first smartwatch product baptized Tambour Horizon which runs a heavily customized version of Android Wear 2.0.

As part of the popular Tambour line of products, the Horizon was designed by the same team behind the award-winning Tambour Moon watch. The smartwatch boasts a circular 1.2-inch AMOLED display with a 390 x 390 pixels resolution and is powered by a Snapdragon 2100, the chipset Qualcomm created especially for wearables.

The 42mm Horizon also includes 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage and a 300 mAh battery and will be available with 60 interchangeable strap options and a wide range of different watch faces.

The fashion brand is targeting affluent travelers with the Horizon, which will also come bundled with Louis Vuitton’s city guides and a downloadable “MyFlight” app. Like most smartwatches out there, it can also relay notifications for text messages, phone calls and emails. It also has the ability to work seamlessly with China’s internet, as the market in the country is witnessing a rebound in demand for luxury watches.

The more expensive Black version

The Tambour Horizon comes in three different exterior styles with different bodies and bands. The Graphite and Monogram will retail for $2,450, while the Black one will be offered for a whopping $2,900.

And given its luxury brand status, it’s no wonder the smartwatch will be so expensive. But it’s by no means the only opulent smartwatch on the market. Swiss watch maker, Tag Heuer unveiled the Connected Modular 45 back in March. The wearable, created in partnership with Intel, boasts a price starting at $1,600 and up.

Montblanc also outed its first smartwatch a few months ago, while Armani is gearing up to unleash its first Android Wear 2.0 wearable in September. It seems the race in the luxury smartwatch market is slowly but surely heating up.

LG V30 renders based on CAD designs leave nothing to the imagination

0

LG is gearing up to unveil its second flagship for the year, the V30 in Berlin a day before the IFA 2017 trade show officially opens its gates.

The phone popped up in the rumor mill before, but this week we’re getting a closer look at it thanks to @OnLeaks and MySmartPrice who posted a series of renders based on CAD designs.

The renders are in league with recent rumors which claim the LG V30 will not feature a secondary display on top like its soon to be predecessor, the LG V20.

The phone is poised to arrive with a 6-inch panel and to boast 151.4 x 75.2 x 7.4 mm measurements.

Looking at the renders, we can spot the dual camera module and the fingerprint scanner living on the back. We also notice the USB port next to the speaker holes and the headphone jack located on the top left.

Lastly, we’re told the phone might support wireless charging, just like LG G6 does in select markets – although this information hasn’t been confirmed at this point.

Other expected features for the LG V30 include a tall and narrow form factor with 18:9 aspect ratio, a Snapdragon 835 processor and 6GB of RAM.

Hopefully, LG will also throw in the quad-DAC feature for audiophiles too, but we’re just going to have to wait and see.

LG Q6 launches as mid-range LG G6 spin-off

0

LG just introduced a new series of smartphones with a “FullVision” displays. The company will be offering three models including the Q6, Q6+, and Q6α – all mid-range handsets sporting the essential features of LG premium phones, but with affordable price tags attached.

The three variants emulate the design of the premium LG G6 with slim bezels all around and 18:9 aspect ratio. They also include a 5.5-inch display with FHD+ resolution (1080 x 2160), a Snapdragon 435 processor under the hood and a 3,000 mAh battery.

LG has included a 16-megapixel primary camera, as well as a 5-megapixel selfie snapper that’s capable of taking angle shots at 100-degrees on all the new products. What’s more, the new phones come equipped with a facial recognition system that can unlock them. All ship out with Android 7.1.1 Nougat on board.

The new models differ from each other only in terms of RAM capacity and storage. The LG Q6α is the base model coming with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internals storage. Then comes the LG Q6 with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage, while the LG Q6+ is the most premium version carrying 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

The LG Q6α will be available for purchase in Astro Black, Ice Platinum, and Terra Gold, while the LG Q6 can be yours in Astro Black, Ice Platinum, Mystic White and Terra Gold. Last but not least, the LG Q6+ includes Astro Black, Ice Platinum, and Marine Blue color options.

The Q6 family is expected to go on sale in key markets in Asia this August, followed by a release in Europe, Latin, and North America. So hopefully we might get to see these mid-rangers land in the US by the end of the year. Pricing specifications are yet to be revealed.

Spotify testing new safe driving mode for Android

0

Smartphones are compelling devices which can fully capture our attention quite easily, even while walking or driving. But in order to prevent accidents from happening, some tech companies have started developing solutions to keep pedestrians or drivers from looking at their smartphones when they should be looking ahead at the road.

It’s the case of Spotify which appears to be working on a way meant to keep drivers safe. The music app appears has started testing a new feature which is currently available only for select users.

According to Chris54721 who posted on Reddit, an Auto Mode has popped up into his Spotify app which includes larger than life buttons and a hands-free voice controlling option (which does not work yet). The app can also announce songs aloud, thus eliminating the need to glance at the screen to see if your favorite song is coming up.

Experimental Listening mode in Spotify

However, some users who have had a chance to test out the new Auto Mode, say its interface is not as easily navigable as the standard one. So instead of removing distractions altogether, the new mode might actually have the opposite effect.

Nevertheless, Spotify has yet to announce this feature which means the company is currently actively working on it and will take into consideration the feedback supplied by users.

In similar fashion, Samsung recently launched the new Walk Mode app designed to keep pedestrians safe while they walk and text.

Unlocked Moto Z2 Play (for AT&T and T-Mobile) now available at Amazon

0

The Moto Z2 Play landed at Verizon a few weeks ago, but if for some reason you don’t want to do business with Big Red, now you have an alternative. You can grab the unlocked version from the Amazon.

However, there are a few caveats to consider before making the purchase. First off, take into account the Moto Z2 Play is sold by a third-party seller on Amazon and not by Motorola itself. Of course, the US company will also start offering the unlocked version of the Moto Z2 Play at some point – we just don’t know when exactly.

Furthermore, the retailer on Amazon is asking for $599 which is $100 more than what Motorola will be asking ($499) when it starts offering the unlocked Moto Z2 Play. Last but not least, the phone is GSM/LTE only which means it’s only compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile networks, but not Sprint, Verizon or US Cellular.

The unlocked Moto Z2 Play offered on Amazon comes with a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, a Snapdragon 626 processor, as well as 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

It also includes a 12-megapixel primary camera with f/1.7, phase detection and laser autofocus and dual-LED flash, as well as a 5-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0.

If you are ok with the implications of buying an unlocked Moto Z2 Play from Amazon, you can place an order right now. Or you could wait for Motorola to start selling it.

At Verizon, the Moto Z2 Play is available for $408 outright, but bear in mind you won’t be able to use the phone on any other networks except Big Red’s. The version offered by the carrier also includes 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

Sequent is a smartwatch that you’ll never have to charge, hopefully

0

The quest to improve smartphone battery is forever unfolding and in recent times it has even extended to the wrist.

Most smartwatch users struggle to make it through a full day of use without popping in for a re-charge, but now a Swiss startup claims to have created a wearable that can basically last forever without needing to be charged.

Their product is called the Sequent and is a connected watch, rather than a fully-fledged smartwatch. This means you won’t be able to install Android apps like Spotify on your wrist (but you can do so on the Samsung Gear S3). However, the Sequent does offer support for smartphone notifications and also includes a heart rate sensor, Bluetooth, and GPS. The product also has an activity tracker which is said to be able to measure your activity during day and night. The watch is available with a variety of watch faces and straps.

And now for the stand-out part – Sequent relies on a kinetic self-charging system that generates power as you move around going about your daily business. And according to the FAQ section, wearing the Sequent for a day will create enough energy to support life on board the wearable for 100 days in stand-by mode.

It remains to be seen whether the Sequent will live up to its promise in real life, but fortunately, we might get to see it in action real soon. The watch is currently up on Kickstarter, but the project has already surpassed its funding goal.

With 30 days to go before the campaign ends, you too can make a pledge for $195 and up. Estimated delivery time is set for December 2017.

Keep an extra eye on your home with link-U (review)

Webcams are nothing new in the world of tech. Heck, webcams that run off of mobile data are not new either. The truth is, cameras are a tough market to get into with lots of competition at great prices. link-U has sent us one of its 4G Hybrid Connection Smart Cameras to help show what sets them apart from some of the competition.

Setup

The setup for the link-U is incredibly simple. Starting off it is powered by POE (Power Over Ethernet) which means that the only cable you need is an ethernet cable. It comes with a POE injector in case you don’t have a $200 POE router sitting around. Once plugged in, you can install the link-U app and setup an account. Account setup is simple, all it needs is a name, email address, and password to get you going.

Once you get logged into the app, the next step is to sync your camera with your account. If your camera is already on the network, then the app should find it without any issues. If it is not, there is a QR code on the back that you can scan to sync up the camera with your app.

The Good

The link-U camera brings one major thing to the table, the ability to use a 4G LTE sim card to stream your HD camera videos to your mobile device, wherever you might be. The camera also houses an 8-hour battery so that it can function during a power outage without any issues, giving you peace of mind no matter how far away from home you might be.

The HD camera takes a great picture and streams a very clear picture, making it perfect for surveying any location you choose. The HD picture looks great whether you are connected to the internal network or over 4G on your smart device.

The app gives you the ability to customize the triggers for when you want recordings to take place and how long to record after a trigger occurs. The recordings can be found in a somewhat confusing calendar button that takes you to a search screen.

The final nice addition of this device is a built-in Bluetooth radio which allows you to control other smart devices from your phone. Within the app, you can allow the camera to be a hub for some other smart devices.

The Bad

The first thing I want to bring up here is the app. As an Android site first and foremost, I want to address the app that is associated with this camera. I cannot speak to the iPhone app, but the version for Android is simplistic and basic. The simple blue background with a list of cameras is not what I would expect to see for an app that is associated with a $300 webcam.

While there is 4G capability, the handoff between the two is not what I would expect. In my testing, it could take up to a full minute for the camera to become available again. I, again, would expect the experience to be superior to this for a camera in this price range.

Conclusion

While the link-U bring brings 4G LTE to the security camera game, I’m not completely convinced this camera is a must have. The hardware included in the package is good quality and the premise of the camera is a great idea, my issue is with the execution of some aspects of the software package. If you were pressed to get a webcam at this price point I would say to give this one a pass.

If you’re interested in purchasing the link-U with LTE, you can find it here. Additionally, link-U offers the camera without LTE and other accessories like smart lights, plugs, and more. You can find them all here.
