iPhone not actually the most stolen smartphone in the UK

0

It appears that an Android manufacturer has had the misfortune of taking the top spot in a list of the most stolen smartphones. According to the most recent report, it was found that models from HTC were most likely to be stolen. And it doesn’t get any better for Android users either, as coming in at number two were models from Samsung. The latest incarnations of the iPhone rounded out the top five. We’re happy for Android phones to win other ‘awards,’ but not this one!

The report went on to say that those aged 18-24 were twice as likely to have their phone robbed, and that women in that age group were far more at risk. Although you’ve probably got that friend who fell asleep on the train at night and consequently, woke up to discover their phone gone, you’ll find that there are actually far more prevalent ways of phone theft. Pickpocketing (often when the phone is in the back pocket) and snatch-theft (when the thief grabs the phone out of someone’s hands) are very common techniques used by thieves.

Furthermore, official figures from 2015 state that 442,000 ‘theft from the person’ offenses occurred, 47% (206,000) of which were stealth thefts (e.g. pickpocketing, taken while asleep, or snatched). Surprisingly, those figures were actually 15% down from the year before, suggesting that slowly, but surely, the general public is getting somewhat better at keeping their phone from being stolen.

The good news is that phone manufacturers also want to avoid your phone being stolen, especially HTC and Samsung now more than ever. Since the introduction of the kill switch – software or hardware designed to remotely ‘kill’ the phone if stolen – it’s reported that in 2014, the number of smartphones stolen dropped by 50% in London, 27% in San Francisco, and 16% in New York. While in office, former London Mayor Boris Johnson said, “We have made real progress in tackling the smartphone theft epidemic that was affecting many major cities just two years ago.”

What are we supposed to do then? Leave our smartphones at home for fear of it being stolen? Not likely. Most anti-theft techniques are simple but very important. Things like setting a screen lock, giving your details to the Android Device Manager, and installing an app such as Avast Anti-Theft, are all highly suggested.

Still, there are other approaches that are worth mentioning as well. Mobile phone insurance providers like newcomer simplesurance, for example, are offering theft protection as part of their coverage, which is especially useful if you’re the owner of an HTC or Samsung phone! This would make the heartbreak of losing your phone a little easier. Secondly, it’s recommended to provide details to immobilise.com. This is a website that assists the police in identifying the true owner of expensive belongings like phones, and according to the Greater Manchester Police, “Items marked as being registered with Immobilise are less likely to be stolen, and households displaying Immobilise stickers are less likely to be targeted by burglars.”

Quick summary

  • Avoid using your smartphone next to the road, as thieves on bikes can snatch your phone and make a quick getaway.
  • Although it sounds hard, do your best not to fall asleep on public transport. Similarly, don’t put your phone next to you on a park bench or bar table and then look the other way. These will all likely end in a stolen phone!
  • Don’t put your phone in your back pocket, as most phones stick out and are incredibly simple to take. Same with leaving your phone in an unzipped bag.
  • Consider getting phone insurance and adding your details to Android Device Manager and Immobilise.
  • Use a lock screen code

Our smartphones have become so important to us and we are using them basically every day. This also means that criminals are looking for these shiny and expensive tech items, but as you can see, there are so many ways to deal with the prevention of theft, or indeed in the unfortunate event that your phone is stolen. Make sure you know what to do.

Android 8.0 Oreo’s new Rescue Party tool aims to save you from bootlooping woes

0

Most Android fans are familiar with bootloops. The issue – which causes the phone to reboot over and over again – has been popularized by quite a few of LG’s handsets including the G4, Nexus 5X, V10, and V20.

Obviously has an interest in helping solve the issue too, so in Android 8.0 Oreo you’ll find a feature that’s meant to combat the annoying bootloops problem. It’s called Rescue Party and works by detecting the exact problems which are causing the phone to reboot unexpectedly.

For example, if Rescue Party spots issues such as a system_server restarting more than 5 times in 5 minutes or a system app crashing more than 5 times in 30 seconds it will take a series of steps to try to resolve it.

Don’t miss: Android 8.0 launches as Oreo

In a scenario where none of these steps work, Rescue Party will go ahead and reboot the device into recovery mood and suggest you do a factory reset.

According to Google, the new tool has been enabled by default in Android 8.0, so users don’t have to do anything special to activate it. It’s worth noting that Google does not force Android OEMs to keep this feature, although we can’t see any reason why they wouldn’t want to provide this safety net to their users.

But having this feature on board your Android 8.0 Oreo device doesn’t necessarily entail your smartphone will be spared of bootlops. If these issues are derived from a hardware/driver source, Rescue Party won’t be able to help. The new tool will only be effective in cases where bootloops are caused by software issues.

Forget about massive cell phone bills with FreedomPop’s $49 Annual Plan

0

If you want to put some distance between you and expensive carrier plans, maybe you’d like to hear about Mobile Virtual Network Operator’s (MNVO), FreedomPop latest offer.

The company just introduced a new Annual Plan with a very affordable price tag attached to it. The plan will set you back with just $49 (about $4/month) and includes 1,000 minutes of talk, 1,000 texts and 1GB of data per month on Sprint or AT&T’s network.

As for more demanding users, they have the option of choosing one of FreedomPop’s bi-annual plans. The first one costs $78 ($13/month) every six months and offers unlimited calls, texts and 2GB of data, while the second is a bit more expensive at $114 ($19/month) every six months with unlimited calls, texts and 5GB of data.

FreedomPop’s own-branded smartphone

Founded in 2012, FreedomPop also offers a selection of refurbished Android phones which are available with the MNVO’s free mobile service, as well as a 90-day warranty.

While FreedomPop originally focused on delivering affordable cell service to US customers, it has since expanded to UK and Spain. Back in March, the company introduced its own-branded smartphone the FreedomPop V7 with a 5-inch display, Snapdragon 210 and 1GB of RAM in the UK and Spain. The handset has yet to land in the US.

Verizon intros new 3 new unlimited data plans, but they won’t bring you any joy

0

Taking the industry by surprise, Verizon announced an unlimited data plan back in February. But this week the carrier announced it will be splitting the original plan into three different new options: Go Unlimited ($75 for the first line), Beyond Unlimited ($85 for the first line) and Business Unlimited (prices vary).

Big Red says that “these plans give you the best-unlimited choices, but you also get what only Verizon can give you: the best network, the best rewards program, the best way to manage your plan with the My Verizon app and the best selection of phones and device,” which sounds great – but only on paper.

The reality is that despite advertising them as the best-unlimited choices, Verizon will be limiting video streaming to only 480p (the current plan offers 720p by default) on its Go Unlimited plan, which is the most limited plan in the new lineup. The new bundles will be effective starting today, August 23.

Go Unlimited Plan

The Go Unlimited plan comes with unlimited LTE data, but and there’s a big but, Verizon will throttle you whenever the network gets congested. Usually, most carriers throttle users after they reach a certain data cap, but Go Unlimited users will experience the “joy” of being slowed down every time there’s a congestion in their area. Furthermore, video streaming is limited to 480p (or 720p on tablets) which the carrier skillfully calls “DVD-quality streaming”. Unlimited talk, text and unlimited hotspot usage (capped at 600 Kbps) is also included, but there are no free calls, text, and data in Mexico and Canada.

Beyond Unlimited Plan

Next, off we have the Beyond Unlimited plan which arrives with unlimited 4G LTE data. Like in the case of the original plan, you’ll be throttled once you exceed the 22GB data cap in one billing cycle. There’s also 720p video streaming (1080p for tablets), unlimited talk, text and data in the US and roaming in Mexico and Canada. The plan includes 15GB of LTE speeds via mobile hotspot.

Business Plan

As for the Business Plan, it can be tailored to specific needs with the monthly data cap is set at 22GB. Yet customers can expect to be throttled whenever times of congestion hit. Video streaming is also limited to 480p.

Prepaid Unlimited Plan

Ah, and there’s also a Prepaid Unlimited plan which adds a line for $80 and offers unlimited data that can be throttled at any time, 480p video, as well as free calls to Canada and Mexico.

But what if you’re on Verizon’s older unlimited plan and don’t want to jump on board a new one? The carrier says things won’t change much, so you’ll be able to keep paying the same price without being forced to pick from the new options. As a bonus, the carrier is increasing the LTE hotspot allowance from 10GB to 15GB for existing subscribers.

But there’s a huge caveat that needs to be mentioned here. Verizon says that “moving forward, HD video on all legacy plans will also match Beyond Unlimited HD quality”. Basically, that means you won’t be able to go beyond 720p on phones or 1080p on tablets with 4K streaming being out of the equation for good.

While Verizon is trying to spin this as being for the benefit of consumers everywhere by saying things like “We’re doing this to ensure all customers have a great experience on our network since there is no visible difference in quality on a smartphone or tablet when video is shown at higher resolutions than 720p on phones and 1080p on tablets,” the truth is the carrier is making it extremely expensive for users to things they used to do for less.

It’s still unknown whether the new restrictions are meant to help Verizon increase revenue, or they have something to do with limitations in the carrier’s LTE network.

LastPass beta gets support for Android Oreo’s auto-fill

0

Android Oreo was only officially announced yesterday but LastPass have been busy updating its app to take advantage of new features the latest version of Android brings.

Android 8.0 Oreo introduces a new AutoFill API that allows users to choose an auto fill manager app to store information, which as you can imagine is quite useful for a password app.

Developers need to make use of this API but LastPass have included the call to this new API in the latest beta version of the app to make entering passwords from the app even easier.

Autofill More than Passwords
Using LastPass on Android already makes you more secure and saves you time by automatically filling passwords in your browser or your favorite apps. Android Oreo’s Autofill lets us take it a step further – now we’ll be able to help you fill in more than just passwords. The Autofill framework lets LastPass recognize credit card forms and addresses as you come across them. If you’ve got that information stored in your vault, we’ll be able to safely fill it for you.

All of the info you have saved in LastPass, including credit card, address, and passwords will be available to fill in forms universally across Android. The feature is still in beta so there are a few apps where the auto fill doesn’t quite work but expect the list of unsupported apps to shorten very quickly as LastPass update the app.

You can opt in to the beta at https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.lastpass.lpandroid.

Switch from iOS to Android with ease with the MEEM Network

0

From the creators of the MEEM memory cable which can back up your phone’s data while also charge it up, this week comes a new product called the MEEM Network.

The MEEM Network offers cross-platform functionality between Android and iOS by allowing users to back up different devices onto the same cable with full visibility.

Furthermore, thanks to the accompanying MEEM desktop app, MEEM Network users can back up their data via Wi-Fi to a laptop or desktop computer in order to make absolutely sure the data doesn’t get lost.

The MEEM Network backs up across platforms and offers a simple Swipe-to-Share data mode between devices / platforms (3 devices per MEEM) when connected to the MEEM cable. It can also restore your backed up data to a new phone by virtue of a single swipe.

You’ll never know the hassle of going from iOS to Android and back again, as MEEM’s latest tool enables users to back up Android and iOS content up on the same MEEM cable.

Until now, millions of consumers have resisted changing to another phone or platform because of the fear of losing data. Contacts, calendars, documents, messages, photos, and videos have been located on a singular platform, leading to a cumbersome backup process that is time-consuming. With the MEEM Network, going from an iOS to Android or Android to iOS device or just upgrading your device is easier than ever before.

Kelly Summer, CEO of MEEM

The Network will prove useful to families with kids, as well. Parents can now view their children’s content while keeping their own data private. Once a parent adds their child to the MEEM Network, his or her contacts, messages, photos and video will be backed up and visible to the adult, once the parent connects their device to the MEEM via Wi-Fi.

If you’re interested in trying this system out, the MEEM Memory app which includes MEEM Network is currently available for download in the Google Play Store. The Desktop and laptop version can be downloaded from MEEM’s official website.

Metal Gear Solid 2 HD comes to Nvidia Shield TV

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was one of the best games to come out on the PlayStation 2, and it’s one of my favorite games ever. There have been a few re-releases and remasters, but now the critically acclaimed game has made its way to the Nvidia Shield TV Android set top box/game console.

“Play as the legendary hero, Solid Snake, as he sets out in pursuit of a tanker carrying a new Metal Gear prototype, and as Raiden, a rookie within the special ops unit, FOXHOUND, sent to infiltrate the Big Shell and rescue the US President from a mysterious group called Dead Cell. World peace hangs in the balance.” This is the full-fat MGS2 experience, with the full HD game with all content, as well as the VR missions that were added in MGS2: Substance.

Exclusive to Android on the Shield, this is essentially a port of the HD collection version from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, which means only 720p resolution but an excellent 60 frames per second experience. The visuals are still as good as ever, however, with the improved HD textures and graphics being faithfully represented on the Shield version with the X1 Tegra processor.

Gameplay is as I remembered it, wonky controls and all. Thankfully they didn’t try and make the controls more traditional here and kept the classic MGS scheme. It is a bit different using the Shield controller to play this, instead of the classic PS controller but the improved Shield controller is an admirable substitute for the most part. I had little difficulty adjusting and found myself successfully sneaking my way through Big Shell in no time.

Metal Gear Solid is not a game series that appeals to everyone, but it is an amazing experience and if you haven’t had the opportunity to play it before, and have access to a Shield TV I’d definitely recommend checking this game out. The only downside is that not every Android user will be able to experience this classic, as it’s Shield exclusive, but the Shield TV is probably one of the few Android devices I’d trust to run this game at a respectable level. If you’re looking to pick it up, it launches today, August 22, and will be on sale for 33% off for a limited time ($9.99) and will normally go for $14.99 in the Google Play Store.

Bixby makes its global debut but still limited

0

We saw Samsung lining up the launch of Bixby only yesterday with updates to the core components of the virtual assistant. Today it seems that Samsung have finally pulled the trigger and updated the final component to mark the global release of Bixby.

Just in time for the Note 8 launch, Samsung have finally flipped the switch on Bixby. Owners of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ should find an update to the Bixby Home app in the Galaxy App Store that will enable the full capability of Bixby. The virtual assistant that was supposed to launch alongside the Galaxy S8 series is still only restricted to Korean or U.S English but there is a disclaimer that Samsung are working on supporting more languages.

On first run you’re taken through instructions on how to setup a trusted voice unlock phrase as well as a few examples of how to interact with certain apps.

I suspect we’ll see Bixby front and center of the Note 8 launch and possibly even more functionality unveiled.
