Google is working on an Android AI System to fight against malware

0

Android has been a primary target for malware in the recent days. This is not surprising when you consider the fact that there are over 2 billion monthly Android devices that are active across the world. Google, the parent company of Android is taking these kind of Malware attacks on Android devices very seriously and it is making attempts to prevent and remove them as soon as possible.

This was the primary reason behind the launch of Google Play Protect, a scan engine integrated into the Google Play Services and the Google Play Store. It periodically scans every app installed on your phone and across the Play store to make sure they have not been affected by some kind of Malware.

Google’s latest attempt at this Malware battle is an AI-powered machine learning algorithm which apparently collects data from Android devices to self-train itself. Some of these collected data include what apps are installed or uninstalled, the behaviour of the app and so on.

Android Security head, Adrian Ludwig, mentioned at the Structure Security conference in San Francisco that their ultimate aim is to create an AI-based system that would be capable of automatically detecting and removing Malware from devices based on the behaviour of the app code.

According to Ludwig, the AI-based learning system is rapidly improving and it has now been able to identify almost 55% of malware from test samples. Six months ago it was only been able to detect about 5% of malware from the test samples. So, the system could be expected to improve a lot more before it makes a public appearance.

Earlier this year, reports suggested that about 0.6% of the 2 billion Android devices were affected by Malware but Ludwig claims that the value is now only 0.25%, all credits to the New AI in town. Google might also use this AI system to automatically detect Malware apps from the Play Store and remove them before more users download them.

With a humongous amount of data garnered from billions of users from every part of the planet, Google definitely has an upper hand when it comes to precision and the data training sets. But, as we all know there are some instances where certain Malware infected apps somehow pass through all these security checks. But Ludwig says that “Machine learning isn’t pixie dust” but it would certainly make a major difference in the days to come.

OnePlus 5 vs Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact (Smartphone Showdown)

0

On the market for an affordable flagship device? Well, the OnePlus 5 or “flagship killer” would be the obvious choice here, but Sony recently unveiled a pretty interesting handset too. The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact bring some pretty worthy specs to the table, but cuts some corners in order to remain affordable.

Below we compare the two handsets to give you an idea which one might be best suited to your needs. Keep reading to find out more.

On the outside

The two phones have one big thing in common – they come featuring a classical design and not a modern bezel-less one. So if you’re looking for a phone with a more interesting look, you should probably consider other alternatives.

Anyway, OnePlus’ latest flagship sports an anodized metal back just like its predecessors, the OnePlus 3T and 3, but its slimmer than them boasting a sleek 7.25mm frame.

The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, on the other hand, takes advantage of a glass fiber-reinforced plastic body. Unlike the OnePlus 5 – which is unofficially water-resistant – the Xperia XZ1 Compact features IP65/68 waterproofing.

To keep prices low, OnePlus has opted to include a 5.5-inch FullHD display and not a QHD one in its latest flagship. Sony took the same route with the Xperia XZ1 Compact and equipped it with a smaller 4.6-inch Triluminos display with rather low 720p resolution.

On the inside

Both handsets take advantage of Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 processor – an octa-core Kyro 280 CPU with Adreno 540 GPU.

But while the OnePlus 5 offers a choice between 6GB of RAM + 64GB storage and 8GB of RAM + 128GB storage, the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact only comes with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. However, the microSD card should supplement users’ need for more storage.

The OnePlus 5 relies on a 3,300 mAh battery with Dash Charge technology for fast charging, while the small Xperia XZ1 Compact relies on a tiny 2,700 mAh battery with QuickCharge 3.0 support.

Photography

The XZ1 Compact borrows the 19-megapixel, IMX400 ExmorRS or Motion Eye camera from the Xperia XZ Premium, which means you’ll be able to take great shots with this affordable flagship.

The main snapper includes f/2.0, predictive hybrid laser/phase detection/contrast autofocus, burst AF, IR sensor for white balance and LED flash. The camera can shoot 4K video at 30fps, 1080p at 60fps and 720p at 960fps. As for selfies, the phone offers the services of an 8-megapixel snapper with 1/4” front-facing ultra-wide-angle camera.

Like in the case of the Xperia XZ1, the Compact also offers the services of 3D Creator – a tool that can create detailed 3D models of objects and people than can then be easily 3D printed.

The OnePlus 5 is the company’s first phone to include a dual-camera assembly. So users will find a 16-megapixel main sensor with f/1.7 alongside a 20-megapixel telephoto lens with f/2.6 on the back. Up in front lives a 16-megapixel selfie shooter with f/2.0

The OnePlus 5 camera has been rated with 87 points by DxOMark which praised things as white balance, detail preservation in bright light and fast autofocus.

Other

The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact and its larger brother, the Xperia XZ1 are the first phones to launch with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. So if you buy the device, you won’t have to worry about updates for a while.

The OnePlus 5 ships out with Android 7.1.1 Nougat, but it will certainly get updated to Android 8.0 Oreo at some point in the near future.

Another feature worth mentioning here is the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact features stereo speakers and supports active noise cancellation with dedicated mic, as well as 24-bit/192kHz Hi-Res audio.

The OnePlus 5, on the other hand, offers a Reading Mode which turns the phone’s display to grayscale which makes staring at the screen much easier on the eyes. The handset also includes the Alert Slider button that lets you easily flip between three predefined sound modes: normal, priority and silent.

Pricing

The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact just went up for pre-order on Amazon with a $599.99 price tag attached. Orders will start shipping out on October 4. For comparison sake, its larger brother, the Xperia XZ1 is currently available for $669.99 a pop.

The OnePlus 5 on the other hand, starts $479 for the 6GB of RAM + 64GB of storage variant. So if you want a phone with a larger display, better resolution, a dual camera and cheaper price you’ll probably go for the OnePlus 5. On the other hand, the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact’s main camera is pretty excellent and also includes the unique 3D Creator feature, not to mention that the phone comes with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box.

You can now pre-order the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact for $599.99

Introduced back at IFA 2017, the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is now available for pre-order in the US for $599.99. The phone will start shipping on October 4, the same day that Google is expected to unveil its next-gen flagship phones, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is a smaller version of the Sony Xperia XZ1 which went on sale in the US a few weeks ago. The tiny phone comes with a 4.6-inch display and low 720p resolution but relies on the computing power of the beastly Snapdragon 835. It also includes 4GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage.

Like the Sony Xperia XZ1, the Compact version also takes advantage of a 19-megapixel Motion Eye camera which is coupled with a 25 mm-wide G lens and f/2.0 aperture. There’s also predictive hybrid auto-focus, steady-shot 5-axis stabilization and the cherry on top – 960 fps super-slow-motion video.

The Android 8.0 Oreo-running mini phone also bundles Sony’s unique 3D scanning feature that can capture 3D images in high-resolution. As for selfies, the Xperia XZ1 Compact relies on a 13-megapixel front camera.

The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact listen on Amazon is unlocked and compatible with GSM/LTE carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Cricket Wireless. You can pre-order it in Black, Blue, White Silver or Twilight Pink.

Now Gboard has been added to the list, as well.

Facebook takes another stab at improving the News Feed on Android

0

Present at Droidcon in New York, Facebook had some good news for Android users, announcing it has improved the News Feed experience.

As the type of content people normally share on their News Feed has evolved from mere text, photos, and videos to more complex 360-degree video or Live, the challenge is to be able to provide a smooth scrolling experience. As Facebook itself explains “a smooth scrolling performance requires the entire computation for a single frame of the UI to complete in less than 16.7 milliseconds.” If the computation takes too long, the scroll animation will be subject to skipped frames and interrupt the smooth scrolling experience.”

Fortunately, a team of Facebook engineers in New York has come up with a solution to the problem. By taking advantage of tools offered by the two Facebook open source projects – called Litho and Infer, they were able to develop a new architecture designed to smoothly support a variety of rich, immersive formats in the Facebook Android app.

On top of improving the whole News Feed experience, the new architecture successfully executed a type of UI engineering that hasn’t been common on Android up until now – called multithreaded rendering.

Brought on board by Litho, multithreaded rendering separates heavy computational processes that are needed to render UIs into multiple threads. Usually employed for 3D game rendering, the technique is a technically challenging one, but the New York-based engineering team managed to successfully implement it for its News Feed optimization purposes.

Litho joined forced with Infer, which was developing a new tool meant to automatically search for bugs that could arise from working with a multithreaded programming model. Together, the two developed a solution that not only improved the performance of the News Feed but also provided reliable proof that multithreaded rendering can be executed at scale on Android.

Google blocks YouTube on the Amazon Echo Show

0

If you own an Amazon Echo Show, you might have noticed something missing – you can no longer access YouTube from it. Ask Alexa to play you a music video from YouTube and you will get this stern response in return: “Currently, Google is not supporting YouTube on Echo Show.” Ouch!

What’s going on, you might be wondering at this point? Well Amazon already issued a statement on the situation which reads as follows:

Google made a change today at around 3 pm. YouTube used to be available to our shared customers on Echo Show. As of this afternoon, Google has chosen to no longer make YouTube available on Echo Show, without explanation and without notification to customers. There is no technical reason for that decision, which is disappointing and hurts both of our customers.”

The Verge also reached out to Google to hear the search giant’s take on the situation. But while Amazon claims Google provided no explanation for the decision, the search giant has apparently a very good reason for why it chose to block YouTube on Amazon’s speaker.

We’ve been in negotiations with Amazon for a long time, working towards an agreement that provides great experiences for customers on both platforms. Amazon’s implementation of YouTube on the Echo Show violates our terms of service, creating a broken user experience. We hope to be able to reach an agreement and resolve these issues soon.”

Google has been known to be very particular about YouTube implementation by third-parties. Back in 2013, the Mountain View-based company got into a dispute with Microsoft over the YouTube app for Windows Phone, which led to Google blocking it.

However, Google’s statement does fuel hopes that the service will once again be accessible on the Echo Show, once Amazon operates the changes solicited by the Alphabet-owned company. At this point, it doesn’t seem Amazon has much of a choice, as the absence of YouTube would really put a toll on sales of its only smart speaker that comes with a display.

How-to delete your search history in Instagram

0

Are you a frequent user of Instagram and for some reason you want to get rid of your search history?

If you want more privacy, then you should make sure you’ve deleted your browsing history first. Check the individual browsing apps (Chrome, Firefox) you’ve used, and wipe the history. But if you want to make it harder for someone to retrace your steps, you should apply the same advice to some of the individual apps you use more frequently. Like Instagram.

Fortunately, it’s quite easy to delete your Instagram search history, so next time you search for something you won’t be reminded that last month you had an unhealthy obsession with pictures of colorful cupcakes.

To go about deleting your search history in Instagram you need to find follow these steps:

1)    Open the app
2)    Open your profile

3)    Tap on Settings

4)    Scroll down (there’s a bit of scrolling to do) until you find the Clear Search History option at the bottom. It’s written in Blue.

5)    Tap it and then tap on “Yes, I’m sure” button
6)    That’s it!

However, you should know that even as you’ve deleted your search history, Instagram will continue to show Suggested People which are basically the people who you’ve interacted the most, but the profiles which usually show up under Recent won’t be visible anymore. So you won’t be 100% completely in the clear, but at least your search history will be gone (including tags and places).

LG expands Google Assistant across its smart device portfolio

0

LG manufactures a wide range of devices, many of which are connected or smart. LG today has announced that almost 87 of its Wi-Fi connected LG smart home appliances are now compatible with Google Assistant.

Including washing machines and dryers, refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, vacuums, and air purifiers, customers are now able to hook their appliances into Google Assistant to offer greater control and benefit from the intelligence of the assistant.

Voice-enabled Control with the Google Assistant
LG smart appliance owners can now have the Google Assistant help them around the house with their connected LG appliances. For example, they can use simple voice commands from anywhere within range of the Assistant on Google Home (or on their smartphone) to check the time remaining during wash cycles on their washing machine, tell their LG refrigerator to make more ice, turn off their range after cooking, adjust thermostat settings on their LG air conditioner, and even check the air quality level in their home using their LG air purifier. The Assistant on Google Home can also distinguish one voice from another, so it can be personal to just you.

All activity has to be done through LG’s SmartThinQ app that is available for iOS and Android to control the entire lineup of LG devices.

“At LG, we’re making smart simple so consumers can enjoy all the convenience today’s connected home can offer without the hassle,” said David VanderWaal, vice president of marketing, LG Electronics USA. “Gone are the days of constantly checking on your laundry cycles or wondering if the kids left the refrigerator door open. With new ways to control your home, a future-ready open platform, and the most extensive range of connected appliances available today, LG smart appliances will change the way you think—and the way you live—for the better.”

LG is committed to built Wi-Fi into most of its 2017 appliances going forward so all can benefit from Google Assistant integration.

Do you own an LG product? Have you used Google Assistant to control your device?

Bose made a speaker you can wear around your neck

0

We’re stepping into the next era of wearable devices or at least Bose is. The sound specialist just unveiled an unusual but highly portable speaker called the SoundWear Companion which can be worn around the neck.

Music fans would normally go for a pair of headphones or earbuds, but if you’d like to be more aware of your surroundings, the SoundWear might be a better choice for you. Or you could just buy normal portable speaker (the one you can take with you at the pool or hang in the shower) instead.

Why would you need to buy a speaker that can be worn around your neck? We can’t think of any reasons why you wouldn’t be able to live without one, unless you’re really keen on impressing your co-workers or friends.

What does the Bose SoundWear Companion bring to the table besides a futuristic design? The speaker is said to be able to offer up to 12 hours of continuous playback. Once it runs out of power, you’ll be able to fully charge it in about 3 hours via a micro USB port. Bluetooth range is around 30-feet and you’ll be able to take phone calls if you pair the speaker with your smartphone.

Bose doesn’t offer any information about what kind of speakers are built into the SoundWear, but given that the company is an icon of the audio industry, sound quality shouldn’t be a concern here.

The SoundWear speaker is already available for purchase on Bose’s website and you can order yours for the pretty hefty price of $300. The speaker will ship out with a black cover, but blue, purple and gray options will be available in the future too.

While Bose’s speaker will certainly impress the audience with its atypical look, it might not be worth paying all that money for. After all there are plenty of other portable speakers that are a lot cheaper and can do what the SoundWear can do, although sound quality and playback times might not be as impressive as with Bose’s product. Also consider the fact that in the case of this wearable speaker people around you might find it annoying to hear your tunes out loud as you walk past them.

Anyway, Bose is not the only company offering a wearable speaker such as the SoundWear Companion, as LG also has the Stone Studio Wireless Wearable which costs $229.
