Get webpages to load faster in Chrome for Android with Brotli

Frustrated that your webpages load at terrible speeds when using Chrome on your mobile? Maybe you should try switching Wi-Fis. Or enable Brotli. Brotli who?

Brotli is a compression algorithm for Chrome (and other browsers) which brings big improvements to the compression ratio to allow for better space utilization and faster loading times. Enabling Brotli in your browser also translate into web pages consuming slightly less data which means you also get to save on precious data limits.

Sounds good? If the answer is yes, follow the next simple steps to enable Brotli in your Chrome browser for Android:

  1. Open up Chrome for Android
  2. Type “Chrome://flags” in the browser bar. This will open a wonderful trove of hidden settings for Google’s mobile browser. It lets you peek under the hood of the app and tinker around with some experimental options. But you need to proceed with caution. Do not enable/disable things at random or things might take a wrong turn.
  3. Tap Settings (three dots in the right top corner)
  4. Tap Search and look for “Brotli”

5. At the top of the screen, highlighted in yellow, you’ll see the “Brotli Content-Encoding” option.

6. Change from Default to Enable

7. Restart Chrome to apply the changes.

8. Voila! You’re done.

VIZIO M50-E1 SmartCast display (2017) review

0
Editor Note: Our review unit was provided to us at no cost and we were allowed to keep it upon publication. This did not color our scoring or impressions of the product. Our staff makes every effort possible to stay objective in reviewing.

As a site that focuses Android and smartphone-related technology, we’ve seen our scope of coverage widen quite a bit over the last decade. What used to be just just headphones, cases, and chargers has expanded into a whole new world of products and accessories.

Now we cover smartwatches, wearables, and other tech that didn’t even exist until a few years back. Take, Google Chromecast, for instance. It was not all that long ago that these little dongles and built-in smarts were just a concept. Today, though, it’s everywhere. It’s built into speakers and monitors and considered an industry standard.

We were asked by Vizio to review one of its latest displays (TVs) because a key selling point was its internal Chromecast capabilities. Moreover, it offers Google Home and Google Assistant technology, something that’s also becoming increasingly present.

Billed as a display and not a TV, the Vizio M50-E1 is, for all practical purposes, a 50-inch television screen. As to why it’s not a “TV” in Vizio’s eyes, it’s because there is no internal tuner for over-the-air broadcasts.

Similar to a computer display or traditional monitor, there are multiple inputs available, including 4 HDMI, 2 USB, 1 component, and 1 Ethernet. There are more than enough to connect a game console or two, plus a DVR.

We connected an NVIDIA Shield console, DVR, and PlayStation 4. This left us with an extra HDMI port as well as all other inputs. Depending on what sort of habits we’re in, we’ll often turn to the NVIDIA Shield because of its Google smarts and casting ability. Often we’ll turn it on so we can Cast our phone or tablet to the television.

Setup

Setup was incredibly easy, with a few menus to follow along. It took about as much time to take the monitor out of the box and set it up as it did to walk through the menus and configure to the network. The entire process is straightforward and intuitive.

It did not take long for us to appreciate the ease in which we could start a YouTube video on our phone and send it to the Vizio. There’s a setting you can enable which will automatically wake the monitor up so you’re not fumbling for a remote or walking over to push any buttons. Quite often we’ll queue up a new episode of a show on HBO GO or Netflix and pass it off to the M50-E1.

Performance and Usage

We can’t speak to the absolute specifics of the TV and how it relates to other models on the market. There are plenty of great review sites dedicated to the cause (example) which can help spell out color contrasts, input lag, color gamut, and other fine points. As we were putting this together we looked around and found that the M50-E1 scored fairly well in most aspects and benchmark tests.

We can speak, however, to its quality as it relates to other units we’ve had around the home and office. This being our first Vizio we found it to be every bit as good as competitive models we’ve purchased in the past — and spent more money on.

The 1080p image is crisp with the 4K picture looking considerably better. Video games at that resolution, where applicable, look amazing on the Vizio. There was very little flicker in quick moving games or extremely busy images.

As for the color and overall range, we were really impressed with this unit. Thanks to support for both Dolby Vision and HDR10, the Vizio is equipped to deliver an extremely sharp, bright, picture with a much wider color range than what we’d get only a few years ago. Given these are two formats in an emerging battle, we like that Vizio doesn’t draw a line in the sand, allowing for both.

Some of the movies we’ve watched on this monitor were much more vivid than we remembered. It’s not unlike what happens when you compare a standard picture from a phone to one that can be captured by the likes of the HTC U11 or Pixel 2 using HDR.

The 120Hz refresh rate, while not as high as what you’ll find on the market, did well for scrolling sports scores, news tickers, and moving images. It wasn’t all that long ago that we were extremely happy to jump from 60Hz to 120Hz. Sure, down the road we may expect more from our sets but we’re okay with keeping prices down on models that do not have all of the bells and whistles.

Another example of this might be in having a curved screen. The M50-E1 is flat whereas the curve is becoming a standard in higher priced sets. We haven’t owned a curved unit, but we’ve spent enough time around them to appreciate what it does. Again, for us, in 2017, we’re okay with forgoing that feature in exchange for a lower sticker price.

Apps and other Smart Stuff

There are a number of pre-loaded apps on the Vizio M50-E1, including Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu, Crackle, iHeartRadio, Xumo, Vudu and Pluto TV. But, when you factor in Chromecast, it becomes nearly endless. In all honesty, we tend to prefer the apps on our phones and tablets over those on the monitor. Casting is all too easy and we like the interface better.

For those of you who are existing Vizio users, you might be familiar with the SmartCast Mobile app. This monitor supports the app, which we found to be more fun and intuitive than what’s happening on screen.

There’s quite a bit going on in the SmartCast app, with the experience getting better when you own other Vizio products like a soundbar. Yes, it’s an ecosystem that tries to loop you in with brand affinity, but it’s certainly no worse than what Samsung and LG might do.

If you haven’t purchased a Google Home or something with Google Assistant built, you might want to consider doing so. Once you start to leverage the AI smarts you’ll find yourself talking to your TV way more than before. It makes sense to use in the living room, especially when you’re asking for things like how old an actor is or to play a specific show on a specific service.

The Vizio is ready to connect to your Home and tap into the smart assistant. Once you’ve downloaded a handful of apps you’ll find that you’re able to use the monitor in a variety of cool ways that your old television cannot. To be clear here, you cannot talk directly to the Vizio monitor as if it had Google Assistant installed. You’ll still speak to your Google Home or speaker with Google Assistant baked in.

Sound

Sound was on par with our expectations, but we wouldn’t necessarily call attention to it as a selling point. We’ve long wanted to get a soundbar or some better speakers for our television and the Vizio doesn’t do much to change the sentiment. It’s definitely good enough for average use, but we didn’t have any “wow” moments.

If you own some external speakers or are considering them for your next set, you’ll want to add them here. The RCA output and Digital Audio Out (SPDIF) open the door to pretty much anything on the market.

Conclusion

The 50-inch unit replaced our older 1080p HD 55-inch Samsung and we’ve not missed that five inches of screen. We were happy to trade off the display size for Google intelligence and a 4K picture.

We found that the internal Chromecast and Assistant was more than simple convenience. In fact, we’re at a point where we could probably unplug the NVIDIA Shield and not miss it in the living room. Truth be told, we’d probably move it to another area of the house where we can relegate it to gaming.

Given the features and options in the Vizio M50-E1 we have no reservations in recommending it for the suggested retail price of $599. In fact, as we were finalizing our review we saw it listed for $549 on Vizio’s website with free shipping. That is a fantastic deal to us.

You can find the M50-E1 at a variety of retailers and their respective websites. Among them are Best Buy, Walmart, B&H, Dell, Costco, and Sam’s Club. As of right now it appears that most of the vendors are offering it at the same $549 cost, or slightly less.

4 Android apps to help grow your business faster (Android)

0

If running business were easy, virtually everybody would be an entrepreneur – and every business successful. It’s unfortunately never that easy.

The advent of mobile technology however makes things a bit easier for business owners as there are now countless tools all aimed at making running your business easier – from those that help you work faster to those that make you more productive or more organized, to those that help you connect better with clients and prospects, and those that help you sell “on the go”.

While there are several mobile operating systems out there, this article will be focusing on Android apps that can help you grow your business faster. Here are 4 of them:

Evernote

How do you keep up with appointments, manage your to-dos, and take important notes on the go, even while very busy? When it comes to mobile solutions, Evernote is the answer. This ultimate productivity app reminds you of your tasks, appointments, and even your notes, so you never miss anything.

Several features make it a must-have for business owners, from ability to sync between mobile and desktop and also collaborate with other people, to other features like saving business cards, to adding media to your notes. If you’ve ever wished your personal assistant was digital and way smarter, Evernote awaits you in the Play Store.

Social media apps

This is a no-brainer. Sure you know if your business isn’t currently represented on social media, you’re not just missing out and lagging behind, but also literally leaving a lot of money on the table –money your competitors are packing. Social media is now as essential to business as website was in early 2000s.

Without a proven and effective social media marketing (and management) strategy infused into your overall marketing strategy – including consistent content publishing, social advertising, influencer marketing, contests, etc, you can be sure you’re not being competitive enough in business.

However, gone are the days when the only or best way to access social media, especially for business was to enter the address of your chosen social platform in your browser’s address bar. With the continuous speedy growth of mobile, you can now access every major social media website via their app across various mobile operating systems.

You can bet your favorite social media has its app on your Google Play App Store – and it’s just a search away – from LinkedIn to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and countless others.

Hootsuite

From the last point, you know how very important social media is to growing your business faster. It might, however, be hard to keep up with every social media platform there is, and doing the necessary business activities on them – networking, content distribution (created or curated), customer service, etc.

How about an app that can help you do all these on one spot – I mean, just one app that enables you to manage multiple social media platforms and accounts and carry out all your social activities on it? Well, that’s what Hootsuite does. And the best part is that it enables you to automate your social media activities, from scheduling future posts to monitoring topics and people on social media.

If you’re (even just remotely) serious about the social part of your business, you’d grab Hootsuite from Play Store and start winning in the social world.

Quickbooks

What is the value of a post about effective business practices without talking about accounting?

When it comes to accounting in the mobile technology world, Quickbooks is your go-to app, and luckily, it’s also available on Android. It simply helps businesses organize their bills and accounts. With Quickbooks, you can perform tasks like bookkeeping, invoicing, accounting, and billing – among several other accounting/finance-related tasks – online.

Needless to say if this post was a list of 100 business apps, I wouldn’t run out of points. But the essence of writing this isn’t to put you on a never-ending apps-chasing venture; it’s to help you manage your business better with mobile technology, especially if you’re an Android user.

Starting with just the 4 apps featured here will definitely set you on that path, and with time, you’ll discover more apps by yourself – and you’ll find for yourself more tools to help you become a better and more successful entrepreneur.

UHANS unveils five new devices at Asia World-Expo (Promoted)

0

Chinese electronics manufacturers once again met at the Asia World Expo last week, bringing together China’s best and brightest. The show ran from October 18th-21st, and a number of new smartphones and gadgets were shown off. Among the companies demonstrating was UHANS, displaying five new upcoming devices.

UHANS Max 2

  • 6.44″ FDH display
  • Full-Metal Unibody
  • MT6753T Octa Core processor
  • 4/64GB RAM/ROM (expandable)
  • 4300mAh battery
  • 13+2MP Front & Rear cameras

What most stands out to me about this phone is the two sets of dual-lens cameras, one front and one rear. That means that no matter what camera you’re using, the quality of your pictures will remain constant. A small thing, perhaps, but it means you won’t struggle to find the right settings for your selfies to make them look as good as your landscapes.

UHANS i8

  • 5.65″ 18:9 FDH display
  • 2.5D glass exterior
  • MT6750 Octa-Core processor
  • 4/64GB RAM/ROM
  • 13MP rear camera
  • 8MP front camera
  • USB-C charging

Following the growing trend of 18:9, bezel-less screens, UHANS showcased the i8, which while not boasting the most impressive of specifications, is still powerful enough to hold its own in today’s market.

UHANS MX

  • 5.2″ HD display
  • 2.5D glass
  • MTK6580 1.3GHz processor
  • 2/16GGB RAM/ROM
  • 3000mAh battery
  • 8MP rear camera
  • 5MP front camera

At first blush, the MX appears to be severely underpowered in today’s market. But given that it’s being marketed by UHANS as the cheapest bezel-less smartphone on the market, I’d expect it to drop with a sub-$150 pricetag. No confirmation on that price yet, but stay tuned.

UHANS K01

  • 5″ HD display
  • IP68 Ingress Rating
  • MTK6753 1.3GHz processor
  • 3/32GB RAM/ROM
  • 5000mAh battery
  • 13MP rear camera
  • 5MP front camera

With a 5000mAh battery and a ruggedized, IP68-rated chassis, the K01 will be a great phone to take with you on hikes and the outdoors in general – no word on pricing yet, but the modest specifications seem to indicate in the sub-$200 range.

UHANS Mix 2

  • 5.99″ 18:9 FHD display
  • 2.5D glass
  • MTK6757 1.5GHz processor
  • 6/128GB RAM/ROM
  • 4000mAh battery
  • 16+5MP rear camera
  • 8MP front camera
  • Android 7.0

Looks like the Mix 2 is poised to be the flagship of the bunch, sporting most of the features of the phones listed above and including a rather impressive 6GB of RAM. Unfortunately there wasn’t much discussed of pricing, but if I had to guess, I’d pin it at the $400 price point.

Check out UHANS’ website for more information about its lineup, and check out all sights from UHANS’ experience at the Asia World-Expo in the gallery below!

Sony already rolling out Android Oreo to Xperia XZ Premium

0

One of the most frequent criticisms of the Android operating system as a platform is the lack of pace in which updates roll out to devices. This can be attributed to the carriers or multiple vendors that introduce enough levels the update must filter through that slows the whole process.

So when Android 8.0 Oreo was released, all the excitement was short lived when considering when your device would actually get the update. However, Sony seems to be breaking the mold when it comes to getting updates out to its customers. The company is already rolling out Android Oreo to the Xperia XZ Premium having promised that its flagship device would be upgraded by the end of the year.

Oreo on the Xperia XZ Premium comes with all the features and improvements you would expect from Android 8.0, including picture-in-picture multitasking, and better battery life. It also includes Sony’s own improvements, such as:

  • 3D Creator: An app that lets you scan your face, head, feet, or any object and create a 3D avatar or free-form image in under a minute. You can use it on social media, share it with friends, or create a 3D print.
  • Predictive Capture: A feature that detects smiles when you take a picture of a person and automatically starts buffering images (even before you press the shutter button) so you can choose the best one from a selection of four shots.
  • Autofocus burst: Recognizes and tracks moving objects in sharp focus so you can capture blur-free action shots.
  • Improved sound quality: Tuning improvements that make the Xperia XZ Premium’s front-facing speakers sound even better, and Qualcomm aptX HD audio for high-quality audio through wireless headphones.
  • App shortcuts: Re-imagined app shortcuts that allow easy access to action menus by long-pressing an app icon.

The rollouts are phased and Sony is keen to highlight that not everyone will get Oreo right away on the Xperia XZ. Keep an eye on those notifications to find out when the update hits your device.

Apple vs Samsung is about to re-open

0

In a landmark ruling back in 2012, Apple won a $1 billion judgment from Samsung for several patent infringements. The two companies are soon set to face off once again with around $400 million on the line in a ruling picked up by Foss Patents with the same Judge Lucy Koh that has handled the case previously and issued the original judgment.

While the $1 billion was the original verdict, Samsung has already paid $548 million in late 2015 but took the case to the Supreme Court the following year to reduce the sum.

Samsung was originally deemed to have violated Apple patents while building versions of its Galaxy series smartphone and as such was ordered to pay Apple the profits from those devices, hence the $1 billion figure. The Supreme Court said however that this logic was mistaken, and Samsung should have to only pay Apple for the parts of the phone that violated Apple’s patents, not the entire thing.

While Apple accepted this, the company tried to argue that the original payment of $548 million should just about cover this new ruling and there was no need to revisit it. Koh ultimately disagreed and now around $400 million of that $548 million that was already paid is now up for discussion.

Samsung and Apple have until Wednesday 25th October to come to an arrangement out of court but seeing as the two have failed to mutually agree on anything outside of court proceedings thus far, it seems this one will be up for Kuo to decide once more.

“Pay with Google” makes the Android shopping experience a lot smoother

0

Google this week is making it easier for users to shop on their Android device by rolling out Pay with Google.

The new feature lets shoppers use any credit card or debit cards they’ve previously used with Google’s other services (Chrome, Android Pay or Google Play) to make payments by virtue of a few clicks. Now all you have to do is tap a button, select a preferred card and confirm the transaction with a security code on your Android device. What’s more, you don’t even have to enter your shipping address, Google will send it to the retailer for you.

With this new tool in place, you won’t have to input your payment details every time you purchase something from a website.

At launch, Pay with Google can be used in the Android app or Chrome browser and can be used to shop from the following places:

Google says more are coming soon including Airbnb and a host of food delivery services, but the preliminary list is pretty short. The search giant also plans to bring the experience to other browsers too.

What’s more, Google wants to make it easier for developers to implement this tool into their app, so it already made available the necessary docs to learn how to get started with the Google Payment API. The Mountain View-based company notes the process is an easy one and only involves a few lines of code. On top of that, it’s free, as Google doesn’t charge any transaction fees.

Huawei could beat Samsung to the foldable phone (too)

0

ZTE beat Samsung to the foldable smartphone when it released the Axon M last week. And according to a report coming out of CNET, it seems a third company is working on a foldable handset, one which could even see the light of day before the frequently rumored Galaxy X.

Huawei’s own CEO, Richard Yu revealed the device maker already has a working prototype. Nevertheless, the product still needs a few refinements when it comes to mechanical design before it can be released on the market.

But unlike the ZTE Axon M which has a significant gap in the middle where the two displays unite, Huawei’s product shouldn’t have that gap at all. Samsung’s Galaxy X will also be gapless, as the device is expected to sport a single foldable display.

ZTE’s current foldable smartphone, the Axon M

Richard Yu admitted that in its current form, their foldable design boasts a small gap, but the company hopes to be able to get rid of it in the upcoming months. If all goes well, we could see the phone make a debut on the market in the first months of 2018. Or maybe not. Time will tell.

As always Huawei continues to have big plans. The company just unveiled the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro flagships and now is looking to play its part in revolutionizing smartphone design.

Nokia 3310 3G now available for pre-order at Best Buy

0

Back at MWC 2017 in Barcelona in February, HMD unveiled a modern revival of the once extremely popular Nokia 3310, which was launched in 2000.

And while the phone has been available in some markets across Europe for a while now, it’s only making its way into the US now, as a 3G variant.

The phone popped up at Best Buy and is available for pre-order in funky colors such as Azure, Charcoal, Red or Yellow. Interested parties can pick it up for $59.99.

The phone boasts a 2.4-inch display with 240 x 320 pixels encased in a solid body and includes a 2-megapixel camera with LED flash, a 3.5mm headphone jack, FM radio and MP3 player. Nostalgics will be glad to know the phone offers a retro UI and offers access to the legendary Snake game.

The Nokia 3310 3G ships out with 16GB of internal storage (expandable up to 32GB via microSD card slot) and relies on a 1,200 mAh battery which is said to be able to offer 6.5 hours of talk-time and up to 24 days of standby time.

The phone is compatible with the networks of AT&T and T-Mobile in the US and will start shipping out on October 29.

The Essential Phone gets a permanent discount, now available for $499

0

Andy Rubin and his new startup introduced the Essential Phone a few months ago with a $699 price tag. Well fast-forward to the present and the company announced the phone is now available with a permanent price cut. Interested parties can now purchase the Essential Phone for just $499.

The phone was discounted in order to make it easier for customers to try out the bezel-less handset. For those who already bought an Essential Phone, the company is offering a $200 friends & family code to be used on the official website towards the purchase of another Essential phone or an Essential 360 Camera.

As far as we can tell from an official post, the promo is targeted at people who already own an Essential Phone, which is a bit bizarre. The company encourages customers to use the promo code to buy an Essential Phone for a loved one, but what about the people who wanted to give the phone a shot but were put off by the large price tag?

In September, a report coming out from research firm BayStreet – known for tracking shipments of phones in the US – revealed only 5,000 Essential Phone units sold in the country since launch. So you’d think Essential would want to encourage new customers to buy the device

We’re currently seeing the new price tag on the official Essential website, but also at Best Buy (where it seems to be available for all – Essential owners and non-owners alike).
