Free phones from T-Mobile and MetroPCS this tax season

0

T-Mobile, and its prepaid brand, MetroPCS, are offering up some great deals for new and existing subscribers. Framed around the concept of tax season savings, it finds the carriers giving instant rebates and free phones.

T-Mobile

Starting from Friday, February 16, T-Mobile will give customers the opportunity to receive a free LG G6, LG V30, or LG V30+. As a Buy One, Get One promo, the buyer must purchase one of the phones on an Equipment Installment Plan. A second one of equal or lesser value (up to $850) is free after monthly bill credits.

Both general consumers and Business buyers can receive up to six phones through the promotion. What’s more, this deal can be paired with other savings at T-Mobile.

MetroPCS

The prepaid arm has a number of offers for its current and potential customers. For starters, new customers can immediately get up to $150 off any phone instantly when they port an eligible wireless number to MetroPCS and sign up for an Unlimited LTE plan. Essentially, this means free phones from the likes of Samsung, ZTE, and LG.

Current MetroPCS customers can also get in on free phones, too. Add a line to an existing $60 Unlimited LTE plan and you’ll get a $50 instant rebate. In other words, phones like the LG Aristo and ZTE Avid 4 end up free.

If you’ve been a customer for longer than three months, you can upgrade and receive a $50 instant rebate on phones priced $79 or higher — if you’re currently on or change to a $60 unlimited LTE plan.

As a reminder, MetroPCS is running its popular “4 for $100” deal. Available to new or existing customer who port-in at least one eligible phone number, it allows for four lines of unlimited talk, text and LTE data for just $100.

Amazon awards gift cards to users who paid to remove Prime Exclusive Phones ads

0

Earlier this month, Amazon announced that it will no longer push lockscreen ads on its Prime Exclusive Phones and, as a result, would increase the price of the devices with $20.

The company has been selling these products ever since 2016 and until recently owners could only get rid of these ads by paying a one-time fee. But with the no-lockscreen ads policy in place, Amazon is now looking to refund customers who paid to have the ads removed.

Prime Exclusive Phones no longer come with lock-screen ads

The Android Police got ahold of an email sent out by the retail giant to one of the affected owners in which the company states it is willing to reimburse him by offering a free gift card worth the amount paid to disable the ads. However, we should note that the customer refund will vary as the discount offered for each Prime Exclusive Phone varied.

It’s a pretty nice gesture on behalf of the retail giant, especially considering that the company is doing the reaching out and not the other way around. Unfortunately a gift card means you with Amazon and nowhere else.

Even with lockscreen ads gone, Amazon Prime Exclusive phones will still ship out with pre-installed Amazon apps.

Users who paid to get ads removed, but haven’t been contacted by the company just yet, should wait a few days. Or they can send an email to Amazon.

How to set your favorite song as alarm on your Android phone

0

Alarms – we hate them, but we simply can’t live without them. The best we can do to make the whole experience more pleasurable is to try to find an alarm tune that will gently nudge us to wakefulness. Although heavy sleepers might need a different one.

Now if music is the thing that gets you out of bed in the morning, you might want to think of setting your alarm to your favorite song. And thanks to the versatility of Android devices, now you can.

Each Android smartphone comes with its own unique selection of wake up tunes. But if they just don’t do it for you, you can always use your own music library instead. How? Continue reading to find out.

First off you need to get your favorite song on your Android phone, right?

  1. Connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable
  2. The phone’s storage should be visible under Devices and Drivers
  3. Find the song on your PC (preferably in MP3 or MP4 format)
  4. Copy the song onto your phone’s internal storage in the Alarms folder
  5. Once the file has copied, disconnect your phone from the computer

Now that you have the song on your phone, go ahead and set the alarm. For the purpose of this tutorial, I was using a Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016).

  1. Open up the clock app and tap the (+) symbol located in the lower left corner to add a new alarm
  2. Set the time you want to wake up and scroll down until you see Alarm tone and volume and tap on it

  1. You’ll see a list of default tones (offered by Samsung), scroll down until you find the option to Add from phone and tap on it
  2. Now you should be able to see a list of all your songs. Choose the one you want and tap OK

That’s it, folks! Now you’ll be able to wake up to the sounds of your favorite songs. Isn’t this the best?

New LG V30 version with AI-powered camera features coming at MWC 2018

0

AI is the next big thing in tech and LG is finally getting on the bandwagon too. Ahead of the Mobile World Congress 2018 at the end of this month, the company announced this week, it is coming to Barcelona to unveil a version of its LG V30 flagship with AI-powered camera features collectively called Vision AI.

The LG V30 gets a 2018 version

The new tech will bring automatic image analysis for shooting mode recommendations to the V30, along with object recognition and shopping suggestions – something akin to what Google did with Lens on its Pixel phones.

The official press release also revealed the V30 will gain a low-light shooting mode that will be able to automatically brighten images in dim environments much more accurately.

Even though LG is jumping on the AI train, the company hasn’t developed its own smartphone voice assistant to compete with the likes of Alexa, Bixby or Google Assistant. Instead, LG has partnered up with Google to offer voice commands for the Assistant that are exclusive to LG phones. 23 such commands were available so far, but the list will grow to 32 this year. LG will add the ability to use your voice to trigger a panoramic photo, image search or low-light photo and more.

LG says that some of the new AI features bound for the V30 at MWC 2018 will make it to some existing LG models too, but it didn’t specify which.

Anyway, if you want to hear all about the new LG V30, you can watch it go live on Sunday, Feb 25.

Android P to get ‘overhaul’ and feature deeper Google Assistant, report indicates

0

If history is an indicator, we could be a mere three or four months away from officially learning about the next version of Android. Slated to be the “P” release, it should make its large scale debut at the annual Google I/O developer conference. What’s in store for Android P?

What’s on the horizon?

According to a Bloomberg report, the next build of Android should be an “overhaul” which offers support for multiple screen sizes and designs. And, yes, that means the “notch”, too.

apple notchReportedly, a major goal for this iteration is give iPhone users a platform that sways them away from Apple. To that end, it should have an improved look to the software while Apple is expected to offer an OS that’s more behind-the-scenes.

Say what you will about the iPhone X’s notch, but it’s a design choice that is not going away. The Essential Phone already employs the look and there are other phones already in the works which feature the same approach.

Bloomberg indicates that Google will bake in support for multiple screens and foldable displays at the OS level. ZTE’s Axon M is a recent model to include two displays; Samsung and Huawei are among those rumored for a folding screen for upcoming devices.

Deeper smarts

google assistantGoogle will place an emphasis on its virtual helper, Google Assistant, in the next release of Android, says the report. We’d expect nothing less, though, as it was a key factor in the Android 8.0 Oreo experience.

Looking ahead, Google’s voice-based tech could land inside of apps, giving developers even more, smarter, tools. As of now, it’s said that Google is also considering integrating Assistant into the search bar on home screens.

What else?

Given it’s only February, there’s very little known about Android P. Historically, Google gives its releases names based off of sweets or brands. As of now, it’s said that Google is using Pistachio Ice Cream as the code name for this one.

It’s possible that Google gives us a beta look at some of the next-gen features as part of a beta release in the coming months. Should it not, our eyes turn to Google I/O, likely in the middle of May, for those details.

How does Android P sound to you so far?

Seven Chrome alternatives for browsing on Android

0

If you’re an Android device owner, chances are you’re using Google’s Chrome for your most of your web browsing activities. After all, the app comes pre-installed on the majority of Android devices. Did you know there are Chrome alternatives?

Chrome is great and all, but at some point, you might find yourself wanting to try something else. Fortunately, there are dozens of great web browsers for Android, each offering a unique blend of features that can offer a smooth mobile browsing experience.

Deciding which is the best for you is often a matter taste, but some web browsing apps simply stand out. Can’t decide which one should you try next? Luckily, we’ve put together a list of robust Chrome alternatives, or mobile browsers you can choose from.

Ghostery

Since privacy is such an important issue these days, you might want to consider installing Ghostery. Build around a tracker blocker – a tool meant to prevent advertising and audience measurement networks from gathering your data – Ghostery lets you surf around the web unnoticed while giving you the option to disable the trackers you don’t want.

Additional privacy options include quick and easy access to clear cookies, cache, and granular history. What’s more, the app also includes an incognito “Ghost Mode” and requests only minimal permissions (for location, photos/media/files, and Wi-Fi connection info), much fewer than other browsers.

Mozilla Firefox and Firefox Focus

The majority of desktop users are familiar with Mozilla’s Firefox browser, and the good news is that its mobile version  is also available – in two flavors. There’s the classic Firefox which offers things like extension-support, AdBlock Plus and LastPass, password manager.

And then there’s Firefox Focus, which as the name suggests, is a mobile browser which targets privacy-focused users. The app boasts a stripped-down, streamlined interface that hides pesky ads and shows things like how many trackers are currently being blocked on a particular website. It also constantly reminds you to delete your browsing history.

The app is perfect for users who are short on space, as it weighs merely 4MB.

Samsung Internet Browser

Samsung’s Experience Browser is a surprisingly good option when it comes to browsing the web on your mobile device. It’s only recently that Samsung made the app available for all Android users (with devices running Android L or above), so you won’t need to have a Samsung phone in order to be able to take advantage of it.

The app boasts a host of useful features like the controls at the bottom (for back, forward, home, bookmarks, and tabs, although the URL bar remains at the top), true full-screen viewing, reader mode or high contrast mode.

It also comes pre-installed with extensions like CloseBy mode – a tool which gathers info about your surroundings from beacons, but also lets you add extra extensions like an ad-blocker.

Dolphin

Dolphin has one of the most impressive lists of features you’ll find in any mobile browser. It supports a handful of useful tricks like letting you search for things with your voice or allowing users to bookmark web pages by virtue of finger gestures.

The mobile browser supports add-ons, tabbed browsing, private browsing and password syncing. On top of that, there’s a Flash player, a pop-up blocker, incognito browsing mode and Themes to customize the look of your browser by choosing from a wide range of backgrounds in the wallpaper library.

Download Dolphin

Brave

Brave is an open source browser which like Chrome is based on Chromium. It has HTTPS everywhere which means you get secure encrypted data traffic. The app can block anything from pop-ups and scripts to third party cookies, to ensure no one or nothing is tracking you.

With Brave, you’ll also find the usual features found in a browser meaning tabbed browsing, bookmarks, and an incognito mode. It attempts to stand out from the crowd by touting speed and battery life optimizations.

Opera Mini

Users who have been loving the Opera experience on desktop can take advantage of the same great experience on mobile with Opera Mini.

The browser comes equipped with everything you’d need for a rich mobile browsing experience. There’s a built-in ad blocker, a new search bar that can scan QR codes, private browsing, and form autocompletion.

What’s more, if you sign up with an Opera account, you can sink your sessions across other devices (provided you’ve signed-in there too).

Naked Browser

In the search of a blazing fast mobile browsing experience? Naked Browser is your friend. Yes, it looks minimalist to the extreme, but it conserves resources so your pages can load faster. It’s perfect for budget and enter-level device owners who can’t afford to download a more resource intensive app. Fortunately, it offers basic features like bookmarks, history, and shortcuts.

The developer also tells us, the browser won’t spy on you, unlike other browsers, so at least in theory, you can rest easy that the app won’t’ collect any of your private info.

So, which of the above Chrome alternative browsers sounds promising enough that you’d be willing to give it a go? Let us know in the comment section below.

Doogee Mix Review: What does $200 get you with this bezel-less option

0

Unless you were living under a rock, you probably noticed that many different OEM’s adopted the bezel-less display trend. These included the likes of LG, Samsung, HTC, Google, and even Apple.

However, the tale of bezel-less smartphones dates back further, with lesser-known devices being released with these types of displays in 2016. One such OEM was Doogee, who was practically unknown until the Doogee Mix was announced.

This device looked similar to Xiaomi Mi MIX which has a big chin, but almost no bezels around the rest of the device. Today, we’re going to take a look at the Doogee Mix and whether it’s really a device to be considered.

Before we get started, there’s a rather large disclaimer that needs to be shared regarding the Mix. Considering the fact that this device was never intended to launch in the US, the Mix lacks the necessary LTE bands and won’t even work with T-Mobile at all. Leaving AT&T’s 3G network as the only possible option if you wanted to pick up this phone.

Design

Now that we got the rough part out of the way already, let’s take a look at what the Doogee Mix has to offer in the specs department.

  • 5.5-inch HD Display (1280 x 720)
  • MediaTek Helio P25 SoC
  • 4GB/6GB RAM
  • 64GB/128GB of Expandable Storage
  • 5MP Front Camera
  • 16MP/8MP Rear Cameras
  • 3,380mAh Battery
  • Android 7.0 Nougat
  • Fingerprint Scanner

On paper, you would think that the Doogee Mix should be in the hands of so many people as a true competitor to Motorola’s G5 Plus lineup. This is also true when it comes to the overall design of the Mix.

When you take the Mix out of the box, you’ll automatically notice the gorgeous display that you have at your fingertips. The gorgeous 5.5-inch display jumps right out at you, along with that rather bothersome chin which is home to the fingerprint scanner and the front-facing camera.

Holding the Mix, however, is such a pleasure. As with many devices nowadays, you have an aluminum frame sandwiched between two pieces of glass. This is another trend that Doogee jumped on, and for good reason – the Mix looks absolutely amazing.

Above that 5.5-inch display, you’ll find a very small earpiece which is obviously used for phone calls, while the fingerprint scanner rests on the aforementioned chin. In the bottom right-hand corner, you’ll find the 5MP selfie camera, which may take some getting used to when you start using it.

On the bottom, you’ll find our first disappointment – microUSB. Sure, Doogee isn’t Samsung or Xiaomi by any means, but microUSB charging is a thing of the past and is rather upsetting to see here on the Doogee Mix. Flanked on either side of the charging port are bottom-firing speakers and the microphone for calls.

Moving to the right side of the Mix, you have your volume rocker placed closer to the top of the phone, with the power button placed right below. When holding the Mix in your right hand, the power button rests perfectly where your thumb holds the phone. This could be an annoyance for some, but it was a welcome design decision for myself.

On the top of the Mix, you’ll find a 3.5mm headphone jack – yes, you can use your trusty ole’ headphones with this one. Then on the left side, there aren’t any buttons to worry about here, but you will find the dual-SIM card slot, which can also be used to house your microSD card.

Finally, looking at the rear panel, you’ll see the Doogee logo placed directly in the middle, with the dual camera module placed in the top left-hand corner. This module includes a primary 16MP sensor and a random 8MP sensor that we’ll touch more on later. Placed to the right of these sensors is your LED flash to keep the subject bright when you need them to be.

Performance

Out of the box, the Doogee Mix is running Android 7.0 Nougat, and after a few updates, the Mix now includes the November Android security patch. This was something that I was pleasantly surprised about, considering the fact that other, larger, OEM’s can’t seem to get this update cycle right and leave their users vulnerable for months.

Since this phone comes out of China, you can expect to see a skin overlay on top of Android and that’s the case here. DoogeeOS version 2.0 is available on the Mix and offers a few different ways to customize your device, but thanks to issues with the Doogee Store, I haven’t really tinkered with this.

For reference, the version of the Mix that we’re taking a look at today is the 6GB/64GB model. When it comes to gaming, there have been very few stutters, even when playing graphics-intensive games such as Riptide GP. Other, less demanding games, perform perfectly, and you wouldn’t even be able to tell you’re dealing with a MediaTek processor.

In day-to-day usage, I also found little issues when performing various tasks, save for the occasional hiccup when trying to switch between apps at a rapid pace. Other than that, the Mix performed as well, if not better, than the Moto Z2 Play that I have hanging around my house.

The biggest complaint that I had about using the Mix and its interface was the fingerprint scanner. For some reason, there would be days where I would not register a single missed scan. However, there were other days where I had to try and try and try to get the scanner to read my fingerprints, to no avail. This device is no Pixel or Galaxy S8, and this is part of where you see the “budget” moniker come into play.

Battery

We would be remiss with mentioning something about the battery, but considering the fact that the Mix is stuck on AT&T’s 3G network, there’s not much to brag about here. If you have no plans to use this phone for anything more than a portable gaming device or an iPod of sorts, then you’ll be more than satisfied.

The Doogee Mix was able to get me through a couple of days with usage, even with some extended gaming sessions. Of course, since the device was never looking for a network to join, this number has been admittedly skewed, and your mileage may vary if you intend to pop-in a SIM card.

Camera

Let’s just get this out of the way – the camera on the Doogee Mix is not very good. It seems as the secondary camera is there plainly for aesthetics and does not actually provide anything of substance.

When opening the camera application, you’ll notice a lot of different “features” and shooting modes. One of which is “Blur” which supposedly uses the secondary sensor to provide a portrait mode of sorts, but there was zero consistency and I often found the “blurred portion” to not make much sense.

We aren’t sure how much work the software is doing here, but I would have to say that it’s a fair bit. This assumption is in part due to how long it takes for the Mix to process an image taken with the “Blur” mode enabled.

When you aren’t trying to get fancy and just want to take a regular picture, the Mix performs just fine. There’s nothing ground-breaking here – just a budget camera that can take “ok” shots. But if you want to dive deeper, you’ll learn that you can take 4K videos, while also tinkering with the plethora of pre-installed shooting modes.

Speaking of shooting modes, there’s even a “Pro Mode” for those who want to be able to tweak every aspect of their pictures. If you’re well-versed in using the more in-depth settings, then you may actually be able to get some pretty good shots out of the Doogee Mix.

Conclusion

Looking past the lack of necessary LTE bands for those of us here in the States, then the Doogee Mix is actually something that I could see myself recommending. For less than $200, this is a steal, and that price is for a device that comes equipped with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage.

I can’t stress enough how much it hurts to not be able to use this device as my daily driver due to the lack of LTE. However, if I ever travel overseas, I’ll probably be throwing this in my bag to see how well it does.

All-in-all, we just can’t recommend the Doogee Mix for anything other than a portable media player or gaming device. If you’re always connected to Wi-Fi it will do great, but if you want to pop a SIM card in it, you’ll be limited to AT&T’s 3G network. For those reasons, we’ll have to tell you to pass on this one.
