T-Mobile to make its next Un-carrier announcement on August 15

0

The next industry-sharking Un-carrier move is going to happen on August 15, 2018, T-Mobile confirmed a few days ago.

The company released a teaser in which it CEO John Legere is seen depositing a large box labelled “Decommissioned” in a storage hall for the “relics of the wireless industry”. The Un-carrier asks: “What relic of the wireless industry will we retire next?”

If you’re curious to find out the answer to the question, tune in this Wednesday at 11:00 ET / 8:00 PT on T-Mobile website and watch the livestream.

While the video doesn’t offer any blatant hints as to what the Un-carrier event will be all about, we can speculate the company is gearing up to make a TV-related announcement.

T-Mobile TV service is finally coming?

T-Mobile’s Un-carrier events usually center around disrupting the carrier industry. Some announcements the company made so far include free Netflix for accounts with two or more lines on a T-Mobile ONE plan or removing caps for select video and music streaming service.

So is announcing a new internet-based TV service next on the menu? T-Mobile first made a mention of this when it acquired small TV company, Layer3 in 2017. The carrier said the service will be ready to launch in 2018, and with a few months left until the end of the year, T-Mobile might be finally getting ready to do it.

T-Mobile has been busy focusing on its upcoming merger with Sprint, so we haven’t heard much in terms of its TV plans. But all could change this week.

There are a couple of hints that this will indeed be the case. First off, ads for Layer3’s current TV service which offer a cable-esque bundle for $90 are showing up for select users on the Uncarrier’s website.

On top of that, T-Mobile is apparently looking to add more talent to its engineering team for a TV expansion. This is just speculation at this point, as we won’t know for sure what T-Mobile has in store for us until later this week.

Weekend Recommender: JBL, TUNAI, Gourmia, iLive, and Toast

0

Believe it or not, it’s time to start looking ahead to another year of school. The dog days of summer have come and the days are slowly getting shorter. Sure, it’s still crazy hot out, but the sad truth is that we need to shop for the fall season.

Whether you’re wrapping up some back yard projects, beating the heat at the pool, or readying for the next semester, chances are good you’ll be using some tech. Be it in the form of a Bluetooth speaker, some headphones, chargers, or something else, you will surely have a gadget nearby.

The Weekend Recommender is our chance to share some of the better tech devices and items that have crossed our path. What you’ll find below are five products that we’ve spent time with over the last few weeks which deserve special recognition. Who knows? Maybe your next favorite thing is listed here!

JBL Clip 3 Portable Waterproof Wireless Bluetooth Speaker

As far as phone speakers have come these days there is only so much you can expect from a tiny speaker. If you’re looking for more volume without lugging around a large Bluetooth speaker, the JBL Clip 3 might be just what you want.

The JBL Clip 3 fits in the palm of your hand but packs more sound than you would expect. It can easily be heard 20ft. away or more without even being at max volume and it’s perfect for sharing music with some friends. With 10 hours of battery life, the compact size, and convenient clip it’s easy to take your music wherever you go.

It also comes in a plethora of color options and like many JBL speakers it’s waterproof. My only complaint would be the sound quality is average and there isn’t much bass, but you can’t set your expectations too high for small speakers. If you’re looking to take your tunes on the go, then you can pick the JBL Clip 3 for $60 from Amazon.

Tunai Drum earphones

When you don’t have a ton of disposable income you tend to cut corners on the things you like or want. And, while headphones and earphones aren’t necessarily a must-have accessory, it’s sure nice to have a pair for the library or commute.

Originally offered in a Kickstarter campaign, the Tunai Drum Earphone are a lightweight set of earphones with plenty of bass and a comfortable fit. Comprised of simple materials these are the kind you toss in a bag with thinking too much. They’re more durable than you might expect and deliver a respectable all-around sound experience.

Available in a variety of accent colors, the DRUM’s wire is tangle-resistant and not likely to end up in a jumbled mess. And, with a simple play/pause button and mic, there’s no fussing around with skip/last track or volume controls; though, admittedly, this may turn some away.

We liked these in our usage for genres like house music, hip hop, and other punchy types. Spoken word (audiobooks, podcasts) sound okay but they’re more tuned for heavier stuff. Grab a pair in your color of choice (blue, green, orange, silver, and black) for just $33 at Amazon.

Gourmia Cold Brew Coffee Maker (GCM6800)

Who wants to stand around waiting for coffee to brew? Not us. What’s more, nobody we know is in the habit of hanging out while a cold brew is readied. We’re talking hours for that experience. Not any longer.

Gourmia has an iced coffee maker that brews a pot in as little as ten minutes. Seriously. In the time it takes for you to go through your afternoon emails or check your favorite subreddits, you could have a pot of cold brew coffee.

Not only does it brew quickly, it also has an ice basket to keep things cold. And, with four strength settings (light, medium, bold, and concentrate), everyone gets their preferred flavor. At the highest setting you’ll only have to wait 40 minutes.

As one of our favorite ways to stay cool on those days that still reach into the 90’s, Gourmia’s coffee maker does the trick. The best part? It doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg for the experience. Pick one of these up for less than $99 and be glad you did.

Be sure to check out our review of the Gourmia (connected) Air Fryer, too. It’s an excellent option for college students with limited space and budget. Chock full of features and accessories, it’s everything you need to cook full meals or heat up mom’s leftovers.

iLive Platinum Noise Canceling Wireless Earbuds

The last thing you want from your poolside session is a weird tan line around your ears. Toss the big, bulky stuff aside and go with something minimal yet effective.

The iLive Platinum earbuds connect via Bluetooth and deliver around four hours of music playback with the active noise cancellation activated. Need to charge ’em up? You’ll only be down two hours at the most.

The sweat-proof, rubberized coating means you can take these with you on those long summer runs, too. And, thanks to the IPX4 water resistance, you can even get caught in the rain, whether accidentally or on purpose.

In terms of buttons and control, you’ll find volume up/down, play, pause, phone answering, and power. Indeed, the built-in microphone makes it so you don’t have to un-pair or disconnect to take a phone call.

Each pair comes with three sets of eartips and three sets of detachable hear hooks as well as a travel case and charging cable. Order yours for around $70 from iLive today.

Toast Wood Phone Case

Sometimes we want to protect our phone without adding too much bulk to the experience. Others might like to accent their device with something more eye-catching. After all, black is just black, right?

Opt for a protective wood case from Toast and you’ll find a selection that’s equal parts fashion and function. It’s not just phones, either, as you can also purchase unique cases for tablets, laptops, and even gaming consoles. Heck, there’s even cool stuff for Google Home and Amazon Echo.

When deciding on which case to go with, consumers can select from a variety of colors or wood types. Choose from ash, ebony, and walnut; a newer option lets you add a metallic inlay for an even more personalized cover.

There are a number of pre-designed images that you can add to the back of your case to show off. If there’s nothing that you like, feel free to upload your own design or custom text. Note that fees apply for the customization.

Application couldn’t be easier. The case we received for our Pixel 2 is two parts: one for the front and one for the rear/sides. Simply pull off the 3M backing and stick the wood to your phone.

Every case is designed with an exact fit and leaves openings for buttons, ports, microphones, and cameras. What’s more, every order comes with a personal quality control process that ensures multiple inspect it before it goes out. Grab yours for about $34 or so, depending on the options and phone.

Five Developer options even the average user should use

0

You might not know this, but Android has some nifty and unique features hidden in a secret menu called Developer options. But even if these options are built for the convenience of developers who need additional functions to test apps they are writing, it doesn’t mean the regular user can’t benefit from trying them out.

Also, it wouldn’t hurt to know a bit about these hidden Developer options. Especially since some can actually help you improve your overall Android experience. Here are five you might want to try out on your phone. But first…

How to enable Developer options on your phone

  1. Go to Settings > About phone (on some devices you can find it under System)
  2. Scroll down to build number and tap it seven times in a row
  3. Once you’ve tapped three times, you’ll be notified that you are four taps from becoming a developer. Keep tapping until you reach seven. Boom! You’re a developer.
  4. Now you should see Developer options somewhere above About phone (in Settings). Or on some devices, the option will appear in the System section.
  5. Tap on it to enter the Developer options menu

In the upper right corner, you’ll notice there’s an on/off toggle, in case you ever want to deactivate the Developer options.

Below you’ll be presented with a very long list of features. And here are five options you might want to try out for yourself.

Fake your GPS location

Ever wanted to install an app that wasn’t available in your area? Or perhaps you didn’t want your friends to know where you are. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to fake your location from Developers options.

Scroll down until you encounter Select mock location (under Debugging). But for it to actually work, you’ll need to have one of those GPS spoofing apps like FakeGPS Free. Get one, launch it and set up the necessary permissions.

When you’re done, go back to Developer options and tap on Select mock location and choose your app. Then open up the app once again and select your new location.

Hi-Fi codecs

Google added support for Hi-Fi audio codecs in Android Oreo. This means that when used with a Bluetooth device that supports codes, your phone can switch to the corresponding codecs to stream audio in better quality.

But what happens when a device supports multiple audio codecs? Well, there’s a Developer option that lets you choose codecs manually. It’s called Bluetooth Audio Codec (under Networking). While System Selection is the default option, it’s incredibly easy to change to other codec options (see above).

Force any app into split-screen mode

Google started offering split-screen for apps with Android Nougat. However, some apps don’t work in split-screen. Fortunately, you can force them to open in split-screen by enabling Force activities to be resizable in Developer options. You’ll find it under Apps. Then reboot your phone and voila! Just keep in mind that some apps might crash, as they haven’t been optimized for this mode.

Boost the quality of graphics in advanced games

If you’re using a high-end Android device and you want to see how far it can go, you can try enabling 4x MSAA in OpenGL ES 2.0 apps.

As a result, you will be able to enjoy smoother, better-looking graphics in some advanced games and apps. But consider this: the extra processing power will put a toll on your battery, so it will drain a lot faster.

Limit background apps

Want to see faster performance on your Android device? Find the Background process limit in Developer options and tap it to select which apps should remain running in the background. The maximum is four or you can choose to have no apps at all.

In case you opt for the latter option, all your apps will be terminated once closed. Which will have the effect of boosting your device’s performance.

Could this be Palm’s upcoming smartphone?

0

Rumors about Palm’s upcoming comeback smartphone have been increasing in frequency as of late. Just a few days ago we reported that the handset which is codename Pepito is nearing launch, as it was recently spotted making a stop at the FCC.

Now the folks at Android Police have managed to get their hands on a render which allegedly shows the upcoming Pepito smartphone. Needless to say, it looks kinda weird.

While most smartphones launching today boast large, spacious displays easily going past 5.7-inches, Palm’s comeback handset will apparently feature a tiny 3.3-inch display with 720p HD resolution.

Leaks gives us a sneak peek of Pepito

According to the report, Pepito will also ship with a Snapdragon 435 processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Fueling this tiny device is an equally small 800 mAh battery.

Furthermore, the device will run Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box and will be offered in Titanium and Gold color versions. Unfortunately, it won’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Based on these specs, it seems Palm’s first handset in years will be a low-end affair. We can’t say we didn’t see this coming. After all, the Wi-Fi Alliance revealed Peptio won’t support 5GHz Wi-Fi, but rather 2.4GHz. And most high-end devices today come with support for 5GHz Wi-Fi.

Pepito’s 800 mAh battery pack

Even if Palm’s first comeback handset ends up being a budget device, it doesn’t mean the company, which is under TCL umbrella, won’t follow up with a more premium device in 2019.

When Nokia made a comeback two years ago, it focused on offering middle-range products at first. Only after a while, did it release a proper flagship. So Palm might take a similar route.

So far there’s no word on when the new smartphone will launch. We do know Verizon is going to be one of the distributors and that the product should become available by the end of the year.

We’ll keep you updated on the matter as soon as we learn more.

Google Play Store shrunk down app size by up to 65%, so you can install more on your device

0

You’ve might have noticed there’s a trend of Lite apps for Android devices. In recent times, a handful of major apps have released stripped-down, barebones alternatives to their original apps. These Lite versions allow users to save space on your phone because they weight next to nothing. They are also a lot faster to download.

At the same time, Google is also striving to cut the size of regular apps, in order to allow users to keep more on their device.

This week, Google Play’s director Purnima Kochikar published a post in which she talks about the improvements the Play Store has seen in the last few months.

Google is constantly working to improve the Play Store experience

One of them has to do with the reduction of app size. Due to the addition of improved developer tools, app download size in the Play Store has been reduced by up to 65%. So users that have limited storage on their phones can now keep more apps on their devices.

This is very important because even if Lite apps are available, their numbers are still quite limited at the moment. According to Google, this improvement has lead to an increase in installs and enhanced retainability rates.

The search giant also boasts that new tools it has added in the Play Console have managed to reduce crash rates by up to 70%. On top of that, improvements to the discovery experience have boosted Google Play Store visit number by 30% in the last year.

Google highlights that Play Instant continues to be a huge focus. This functionality allows users to try out a game from the Play Store without actually installing them on their device. The option is currently available for a limited number of games, but Google plans to expand it in the upcoming months.

During the last months, the search giant also improved some of its algorithms so they can better detect fraud, inappropriate content and malware with up to 99% accuracy. Google says its systems scan up to 50 billion apps on a daily basis to ensure no rules get broken.

Get six months of Apple Music free with Verizon Unlimited

0

Verizon and Apple have signed an exclusive agreement giving Verizon Unlimited customers free access to Apple Music. Beginning on August 16th, Verizon Unlimited wireless customers will have the chance to sign up for six months of free Apple Music.

The offer is open to all new and current Verizon Unlimited wireless customers. Once you register after August 16th your six-month free trial for Apple Music will begin. With Apple Music you get access to a catalog of over 45 million songs ad-free.

Verizon offers unlimited customers a sweet freebie

Subscribers also have the ability to create playlists, share music with their friends, or access to specially curated playlists. Apple Music also provides exclusive music videos, radio stations of every genre, and daily recommendations tailored just for you.

There is even a global live radio stream of today’s top music from Beats 1. If streaming isn’t really your thing or you’ll be in an area with spotty service you can also download music for offline listening.

“This first-of-its-kind offer is just the first step in an exclusive partnership with Apple”  Says  Angie Klein, vice president of marketing, Verizon

As an Android user, you most likely think of Apple music as something just for Apple products. It is true that it is available on iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, Macs, the HomePod, and CarPlay. However, it is also available for Android phones, tablets, and PCs.

One place it is not available is on Google Assistant speakers such as the Google Home, Google Home Mini, or any other Assistant speaker. That is sure to be a big disappointment to many of you who own Google Assistant enabled speakers.

Don’t let that stop you from taking advantage of this great offer because free is free and it won’t hurt to try. You might even end up liking Apple Music, sans the missing support for Assistant speakers.

In order to sign up you’ll need a Verizon Unlimited plan and thankfully Verizon has three Unlimited plans to choose from. These include Go Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited, and Above Unlimited. Verizon allows you to mix and match these plans to make sure everyone in your family gets what they need, and the more lines you add the more you save.
