Five Developer options even the average user should use

0

You might not know this, but Android has some nifty and unique features hidden in a secret menu called Developer options. But even if these options are built for the convenience of developers who need additional functions to test apps they are writing, it doesn’t mean the regular user can’t benefit from trying them out.

Also, it wouldn’t hurt to know a bit about these hidden Developer options. Especially since some can actually help you improve your overall Android experience. Here are five you might want to try out on your phone. But first…

How to enable Developer options on your phone

  1. Go to Settings > About phone (on some devices you can find it under System)
  2. Scroll down to build number and tap it seven times in a row
  3. Once you’ve tapped three times, you’ll be notified that you are four taps from becoming a developer. Keep tapping until you reach seven. Boom! You’re a developer.
  4. Now you should see Developer options somewhere above About phone (in Settings). Or on some devices, the option will appear in the System section.
  5. Tap on it to enter the Developer options menu

In the upper right corner, you’ll notice there’s an on/off toggle, in case you ever want to deactivate the Developer options.

Below you’ll be presented with a very long list of features. And here are five options you might want to try out for yourself.

Fake your GPS location

Ever wanted to install an app that wasn’t available in your area? Or perhaps you didn’t want your friends to know where you are. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to fake your location from Developers options.

Scroll down until you encounter Select mock location (under Debugging). But for it to actually work, you’ll need to have one of those GPS spoofing apps like FakeGPS Free. Get one, launch it and set up the necessary permissions.

When you’re done, go back to Developer options and tap on Select mock location and choose your app. Then open up the app once again and select your new location.

Hi-Fi codecs

Google added support for Hi-Fi audio codecs in Android Oreo. This means that when used with a Bluetooth device that supports codes, your phone can switch to the corresponding codecs to stream audio in better quality.

But what happens when a device supports multiple audio codecs? Well, there’s a Developer option that lets you choose codecs manually. It’s called Bluetooth Audio Codec (under Networking). While System Selection is the default option, it’s incredibly easy to change to other codec options (see above).

Force any app into split-screen mode

Google started offering split-screen for apps with Android Nougat. However, some apps don’t work in split-screen. Fortunately, you can force them to open in split-screen by enabling Force activities to be resizable in Developer options. You’ll find it under Apps. Then reboot your phone and voila! Just keep in mind that some apps might crash, as they haven’t been optimized for this mode.

Boost the quality of graphics in advanced games

If you’re using a high-end Android device and you want to see how far it can go, you can try enabling 4x MSAA in OpenGL ES 2.0 apps.

As a result, you will be able to enjoy smoother, better-looking graphics in some advanced games and apps. But consider this: the extra processing power will put a toll on your battery, so it will drain a lot faster.

Limit background apps

Want to see faster performance on your Android device? Find the Background process limit in Developer options and tap it to select which apps should remain running in the background. The maximum is four or you can choose to have no apps at all.

In case you opt for the latter option, all your apps will be terminated once closed. Which will have the effect of boosting your device’s performance.

0

Could this be Palm’s upcoming smartphone?

0

Rumors about Palm’s upcoming comeback smartphone have been increasing in frequency as of late. Just a few days ago we reported that the handset which is codename Pepito is nearing launch, as it was recently spotted making a stop at the FCC.

Now the folks at Android Police have managed to get their hands on a render which allegedly shows the upcoming Pepito smartphone. Needless to say, it looks kinda weird.

While most smartphones launching today boast large, spacious displays easily going past 5.7-inches, Palm’s comeback handset will apparently feature a tiny 3.3-inch display with 720p HD resolution.

Leaks gives us a sneak peek of Pepito

According to the report, Pepito will also ship with a Snapdragon 435 processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Fueling this tiny device is an equally small 800 mAh battery.

Furthermore, the device will run Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box and will be offered in Titanium and Gold color versions. Unfortunately, it won’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Based on these specs, it seems Palm’s first handset in years will be a low-end affair. We can’t say we didn’t see this coming. After all, the Wi-Fi Alliance revealed Peptio won’t support 5GHz Wi-Fi, but rather 2.4GHz. And most high-end devices today come with support for 5GHz Wi-Fi.

Pepito’s 800 mAh battery pack

Even if Palm’s first comeback handset ends up being a budget device, it doesn’t mean the company, which is under TCL umbrella, won’t follow up with a more premium device in 2019.

When Nokia made a comeback two years ago, it focused on offering middle-range products at first. Only after a while, did it release a proper flagship. So Palm might take a similar route.

So far there’s no word on when the new smartphone will launch. We do know Verizon is going to be one of the distributors and that the product should become available by the end of the year.

We’ll keep you updated on the matter as soon as we learn more.

Google Play Store shrunk down app size by up to 65%, so you can install more on your device

0

You’ve might have noticed there’s a trend of Lite apps for Android devices. In recent times, a handful of major apps have released stripped-down, barebones alternatives to their original apps. These Lite versions allow users to save space on your phone because they weight next to nothing. They are also a lot faster to download.

At the same time, Google is also striving to cut the size of regular apps, in order to allow users to keep more on their device.

This week, Google Play’s director Purnima Kochikar published a post in which she talks about the improvements the Play Store has seen in the last few months.

Google is constantly working to improve the Play Store experience

One of them has to do with the reduction of app size. Due to the addition of improved developer tools, app download size in the Play Store has been reduced by up to 65%. So users that have limited storage on their phones can now keep more apps on their devices.

This is very important because even if Lite apps are available, their numbers are still quite limited at the moment. According to Google, this improvement has lead to an increase in installs and enhanced retainability rates.

The search giant also boasts that new tools it has added in the Play Console have managed to reduce crash rates by up to 70%. On top of that, improvements to the discovery experience have boosted Google Play Store visit number by 30% in the last year.

Google highlights that Play Instant continues to be a huge focus. This functionality allows users to try out a game from the Play Store without actually installing them on their device. The option is currently available for a limited number of games, but Google plans to expand it in the upcoming months.

During the last months, the search giant also improved some of its algorithms so they can better detect fraud, inappropriate content and malware with up to 99% accuracy. Google says its systems scan up to 50 billion apps on a daily basis to ensure no rules get broken.

Get six months of Apple Music free with Verizon Unlimited

0

Verizon and Apple have signed an exclusive agreement giving Verizon Unlimited customers free access to Apple Music. Beginning on August 16th, Verizon Unlimited wireless customers will have the chance to sign up for six months of free Apple Music.

The offer is open to all new and current Verizon Unlimited wireless customers. Once you register after August 16th your six-month free trial for Apple Music will begin. With Apple Music you get access to a catalog of over 45 million songs ad-free.

Verizon offers unlimited customers a sweet freebie

Subscribers also have the ability to create playlists, share music with their friends, or access to specially curated playlists. Apple Music also provides exclusive music videos, radio stations of every genre, and daily recommendations tailored just for you.

There is even a global live radio stream of today’s top music from Beats 1. If streaming isn’t really your thing or you’ll be in an area with spotty service you can also download music for offline listening.

“This first-of-its-kind offer is just the first step in an exclusive partnership with Apple”  Says  Angie Klein, vice president of marketing, Verizon

As an Android user, you most likely think of Apple music as something just for Apple products. It is true that it is available on iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, Macs, the HomePod, and CarPlay. However, it is also available for Android phones, tablets, and PCs.

One place it is not available is on Google Assistant speakers such as the Google Home, Google Home Mini, or any other Assistant speaker. That is sure to be a big disappointment to many of you who own Google Assistant enabled speakers.

Don’t let that stop you from taking advantage of this great offer because free is free and it won’t hurt to try. You might even end up liking Apple Music, sans the missing support for Assistant speakers.

In order to sign up you’ll need a Verizon Unlimited plan and thankfully Verizon has three Unlimited plans to choose from. These include Go Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited, and Above Unlimited. Verizon allows you to mix and match these plans to make sure everyone in your family gets what they need, and the more lines you add the more you save.

Galaxy Watch is Official, Still runs on Tizen

0

Samsung unveiled quite a bit in today’s Unpacked event. Besides the Note 9 and the Galaxy Home, Samsung showed everyone it’s new smartwatch, the Galaxy Watch. The Watch comes in two sizes, three colors, and unfortunately still runs on Samsung Tizen OS.

If you’re into Samsung and either your health or general accessibility, the Galaxy Watch was made with you in mind. The Watch has a significant focus on fitness (similar to its biggest competitor) with new features for stress management, sleep tracking, and exercise tracking.

As far as other hard specs go, the Galaxy Watch sports either a 1.2 or 1.3 circular Super AMOLED with Corning Gorilla DX+ glass, for the 42mm and 46mm respectively. They both contain dual-core Exynos 9110 processors, 4GBs of storage, and up to 1.5GBs of RAM. Lastly, they are waterproof up to 5ATM and MIL-STD-810G military-grade durability. The battery life is rated to last multiple days on a single charge – rated explicitly at 270mAh and 472mAh.

You can get the 42mm Galaxy Watch in either Midnight Black or Rose Gold, while the more massive 46mm only comes in Silver. Bixby has also been revamped this year and is featured on the watch as well.

The Galaxy Watch goes on pre-order tomorrow August 10. We’re looking at $329.99 for the 42mm and $349.99 for the 46mm. That pricing is for the Bluetooth-only models that will be available from Amazon, Best Buy, and Samsung’s website. These models will be available on August 24th. Carriers will be getting LTE models later on this year.

Hearing all the specs and new features and goals, is this year’s Galaxy Watch something to run out and get? So far it looks like another smartwatch only for the Samsung family. If that’s the case, it might eliminate a huge portion of potential consumers.

Anker Roav VIVA review – add Alexa to your car for just $59.99

We took a look at the new Roav VIVA from Anker. Priced at $59.99, it’s a Bluetooth unit that promises to add Amazon Alexa to your vehicle. It’s a little pricier than most dual-outlet car chargers on the market, but does that Alexa integration make it worth the extra cost? Read on to find out.

Setting up an Anker Roav VIVA is pretty simple. Just plug the unit into an open port on your dash, pair your phone to it, open the app (which you’ve of course downloaded ahead of time) and follow the prompts with regards to music streaming.

From there, just log in to your Amazon account to get started with Alexa. It took me way too long to realize that I wasn’t connecting to the VIVA through my Bluetooth menu – just pairing it. Don’t be like me.

Compatibility-wise, Anker’s acknowledges that there may be some hiccups. A number of cars use different Bluetooth standards and software than are standard – this can cause issues. The list of makes and models that may not be compatible is comprehensive and somewhat unnerving.

It’s far from ideal, but Anker offers a 30-day unconditional money-back guarantee through Amazon. So, even if your car is on the list, there’s really no risk to giving it a try. And for what it’s worth, I drive a 2015 Honda Fit – definitely on the list – and I’ve had no problems whatsoever.

Build

As we’ve come to expect from Anker, the Roav VIVA is well-designed. It’s got an odd mixture of materials, textures and finishes: faux carbon fiber siding, glossy black plastic plug, a matte black plastic cap, and a frosted translucent LET ring and icon. Somehow it works, though – especially when plugged in.

That matte black cap is at home in basically any black interior. The LED ring – characteristic of an Alexa device – is surprisingly nuanced, the multi-color LED featuring fades, patterns and blinks with impressive sophistication.

In an odd design choice, the two USB ports are located on the underside of the unit, rather than its face or sides. It’s a strange decision, especially when you consider that not all DC ports offer enough clearance to plug a cable in there. When installing the VIVA, I’d definitely insert the cables before plugging in the unit; it’s tough to do, otherwise.

Anker’s Roav VIVA has two microphones and a dedicated noise canceling chip onboard, making it especially adept at isolating voice commands, even in a noisy cabin.

Granted, it’s probably not going to hear you shout at Alexa when you’re blaring Childish Gambino with the bass cranked, but for your average in-car experience, it’s totally adequate. The face of the VIVA also features a physical mute button, for when you’d rather not give Amazon access to every single word you say while driving.

Performance

As a charger, the Roav VIVA performs about as well as I expected. It features two PowerIQ USB ports, which automatically detects the voltage (between 5-12V) and amperage (between 1-2.4A) of your device and charging it at that speed.

While my V30 didn’t detect it as charging via Quick Charge 3.0, the estimated time to take my phone from 74% to 100% (56 minutes via PowerIQ vs 50 minutes for QC3.0) was pretty similar.

But the real selling point here is the VIVA’s on-board Alexa. It essentially uses your phone’s Data to do anything Alexa can do, including communicating with your Smart home devices; unlock your door, turn on your A/C, start up your Roomba… now, your phone can already do any of that, but the Anker Roav VIVA will let you do it while driving – safely.

While many cars on the road have some kind of voice control, Alexa adds a layer of (artificial) humanity to what is often a cumbersome experience. With over 15,000 recognized commands, and the ability to create custom ones, the possibilities are pretty extensive. From Home Automation to ordering, music, sports and communication, Alexa – and its Google/Apple counterparts) – is the future.

Value

At $59.99, the Anker Roav VIVA is expensive for a car charger. But for an Alexa speaker, it’s right on the money. The Amazon Echo Dot retails for $49.99 as well, though you can find it for as low as $34.99 often enough.

[amazon_link asins=’B075RV7KRM,B0194WDVHI,B071YMZ4LD,B013JNAUMW’ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’androidamazon-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’7e08c3b3-9c15-11e8-8dcf-e775f1ec3574′]

While the Roav VIVA doesn’t have the same speaker power as an Echo Dot, it does offer mobility and charging solutions, which the Dot does not. As such, the Roav VIVA is a decent price-point, though not the door-busting bargain we’re used to seeing from Anker.

What’s new with the S-Pen?

0

A Note just isn’t a Note without the S-Pen. It is an essential component to the Note line up that helps set itself apart from the competition. As such, Samsung is always looking for ways to make it more useful and add more features.

Over the years we’ve come to appreciate the S-Pen for navigating the phone and writing notes. Most recently we’ve come to love Off Screen Memo and Live Messages. The good news is, those features are still there and with the Note 9 Samsung has found a new way to innovate. For the first time, the S-Pen will include Bluetooth Low Energy technology.

Once the S-Pen is removed it pairs automatically with your phone using Bluetooth LE, even when Bluetooth is turned off. With the use of this new wireless technology, the button on the S-Pen gains new abilities.

What Can it Do

With a press of a button, you can pause or play videos, snap selfies with the camera, or control a Powerpoint presentation. When taking photos a single click will snap the photo while a double click will switch between the front and rear camera.

Controlling media playback and the gallery works similarly. A single click will play/pause the song or video and a double-click will go to the next track or photo in the gallery. The S-Pen can even be used to launch an app with a customizable long press shortcut.

What’s even better is Samsung has plans to open up the SDK for developers. Soon developers will be able to add more functions to their apps making the S-Pen even more useful.

A Couple of New Tricks

Last year Samsung introduced Live Message and AR Emojis. This year they have combined them allowing you to write messages on your own custom AR Emoji and share it with friends.

Another cool trick is your Off Screen Memos will not watch the color of the S-Pen you are using. For example, yellow for the Ocean Blue model or light grey for the Midnight Black model, as well as matching colors for the Lavender Purple and Metallic Copper models.

Battery Life and Distance

If you’ve ever used a Bluetooth device before then I’m sure you are familiar with charging the battery. The S-Pen will be no different in this respect. To charge the S-Pen all you have to do is slide it into your phone.

It only takes 40 seconds for the Super Capacitor to reach a full charge, and that lasts you for 30 minutes or up to 200 clicks. Thirty minutes might not sound very long, but don’t worry all of the original S-Pen features work fine even with the battery fully drained.

Another aspect of Bluetooth you’re probably familiar with is the limited range. The new Bluetooth LE S-Pen has a working range of 10M or 32ft. Fortunately, in most instances, you wouldn’t be anywhere near its maximum range while using it.

Fortnite available to more than just the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 at launch

0

The guys over at SamMobile have discovered that Fortnite isn’t just exclusive to the Galaxy Note 9. Apparently, it’ll be available to all Samsung Flagships, starting with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Tab S3, on up.

SamMobile confirmed it to be working on the Note 8 and S9+, though both devices featured lower graphics settings and a lower frame-rate than we’d expect to see on the Note 9.

To install it, hit this link in your Galaxy device’s browser and install it manually. So far SamMobile was only able to confirm it works in the Netherlands and India, but it might work outside those countries as well. Were you able to get it to install? Let us know if you did, and where you are!

Samsung Exclusivity

Fortnite was rumored to be a 30-day exclusive to the Note 9, but it sounds more like it’ll be only a few days. This news will likely bring a collective sigh of relief for non-Samsung gamers.

If you’re interesting in participating in the forthcoming Fortnite beta for Android, sign up for updates here, and play the waiting game with the rest of us.

[amazon_link asins=’B07DK76VH9,B01M8IXC16,B06XWZWYVP’ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’androidamazon-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’2a0d7a6f-9c16-11e8-892d-35ab7aa64bdd’]

With 125 million users across all platforms, Fortnite is far and above the hottest game on the planet right now. Bringing Android into the fold will only bolster that number by leaps and bounds – maybe even breaching the 200 million user mark.

We aren’t sure how long it’ll be until we can get Fortnite on our non-Samsung phones, but count me among those waiting with baited breath for that day. We’ve been waiting since March – we can wait a couple more days.

…Right?
