Casio debuts PRO TREK with heart rate monitor

0

Casio America this week introduced a new member of its PRO TREK line of wearables aimed at outdoor enthusiasts. The WSD-F21HR arrives in September with a $499 price point and marks the first in this line to offer a heart rate monitor.

The WSD-F21HR can help wears with pace management during activities such as running, cycling, and generally trekking. Moreover, it comes with an enhanced Activity App which provides running and trail running menus to measure data such as heart rate, pace, and distance.

Designed for the active outdoorsman, the WSD-F21HR boasts water resistance up to 50 meters and environmental durability built to military specifications. It features a bold, durable front bezel and a soft urethane band with a double pin buckle to ensure a comfortable fit, as well as Casio’s signature dual-layer display.

The WSD-F21HR runs Wear OS and can access Google App services, tying directly into things like STRAVA, BIKEMAP, ViewRanger, and other sports apps.

The watch also packs GPS technology, offline maps capability, and can import GPS log data. On the other hand, data measured by the watch’s app are automatically saved to Google Driver and paired to Google Calendar for historical view.

Additional hardware features include a compass, barometer, and altimeter. Compliant with MIL-STD-810G ratings, it is resistant to low temperatures, water, and other elements.

The watch will be offered in black and red at select jewelry and watch retailers across the country starting in September. Exact timing has not been disclosed.

Motorola makes 5G Moto Mod faster, adds Moto Z2 Force compatibility

0

Motorola this week updated its 5G Moto Mod, giving Verizon customers an improved experience with fast download speeds on the Verizon 5G network. Not only that, it also made the add-on module compatible with an older phone.

The update, which is automatically installed onto the Moto Mod, also enhances the battery experience. Now, the module can replenish the battery of the Moto Z3 if the phone gets low — and vice versa.

The 5G Moto Mod is now compatible with the Moto Z2 Force, a phone that was introduced in 2017. While it’s no longer available for purchase from Motorola, it’s nice to see that Motorola didn’t leave it out to dry.

If you own the Moto Z2 Force or any of the Moto Z3 models, you can get the software update for your phone. The Moto Z4 has already received the optimization.

You can purchase the phones from Motorola, Verizon, and Amazon with the following prices.

Motorola announces One Action, a budget friendly phone with killer camera tricks

0

Last year Motorola introduced its One line of phones, giving consumers the ability to purchase affordable device backed by years of software updates and support. The handset maker is back with a new model: the Motorola One Action.

As one might guess, the “Action” aspect is a play for the action camera crowd currently led by the likes of GoPro. In essence, this is Motorola adding action camera video quality and features to a smartphone.

An industry first camera experience

Flip the One Action over and you’ll see there are no less than three cameras on the back. The main one is a 12-megapixel shooter with phase autodetection, 1.25µm pixels and a f/1.8 aperture. Not only does it focus quicker, it also lets in more light.

A second, 5-megapixel camera captures depth and allows for natural blur, focal intensity, and great portrait shots.

The “Action” camera, is where it gets really fun, though. The third rear camera is dedicated to ultra-wide video and offers a 117-degree field of view. What’s more, it’s rotated 90-degrees.

Through a unique combination of hardware and software innovation we’ve made it possible to finally film amazing ultra-wide video while holding the phone more naturally in a vertical position. And when you play it back horizontally, you can relive all your action packed memories in full screen.

As the first ultra-wide action camera in a phone, it allows users to hold their device vertically to record horizontal videos. Further, it has software tricks up its sleeve to reduce shakiness through “Enhanced Video Stabilization”. Clips have four times the video in frame and look great played back on any device.

Hardware

The rest of the hardware in the Motorola One Action are pretty solid for a mid-range, or budget experience. The 6.3-inch display has a 21:9 aspect ratio with a hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera.

Rather than a Qualcomm processor, Motorola employs a Samsung Exynos 9609 chip, supported by 4GB RAM. In terms of storage, there’s 128GB worth of space, which is on the higher end for today’s handsets. A USB-C port, headphone jack, microSD expansion card slot (up to 512GB), and 3500mAh battery round out the specs.

Availability

The Motorola One Action is available starting today in Brazil, Mexico, and “various European countries” starting at €259 (approximately $288 USD). Latin America, Europe, and Asia Pacific are expected to also carry the phone.

The Motorola One Action comes to the US and Canada sometime in early October, but pricing has not been announced.

Earbuds on your wrist: Aipower Wearbuds review

0

With the rise of cheap tech making its way across the ocean, we’re constantly getting a look at cool little gadgets that we may never have dreamed of before.

One of my favorite rising trends is in high-quality truly wireless earbuds that completely remove the need for any kind of wires. I hate wires and don’t need the best audio in the world; truly wireless headphones have been a boon for me.

Similarly, I also love wearables. Whereas Wear OS is still making progress, it’s never been my favorite thing in the world. Tizen is a better alternative, but both run miles behind the Apple Watch, which as we all know, we can’t use with an Android phone.

This conundrum opened me up to third party wearable platforms, something I hadn’t really considered. There are wearables with custom software from big companies like Fitbit out there and some from companies so small you’ve definitely never heard of them. All with their repective strengths and weaknesses.

One company I had definitely heard of before is Aukey. The company makes higher-quality accessories, some of which we’ve reviewed. One of its sub-brands, Aipower, recently hit Kickstarter and Indegogo with a funding campaign for the Aipower Wearbuds, a new fusion of wearable and audio. We’ve had a few weeks to take a look at them and have come away impressed.

Unbox Therapy recently took a look at the product, saying it’s “like Airpods on your wrist.” I can see where he’s coming from, but I do disagree just a bit.

First off, they don’t sound anything like Airpods. The audio is fine, but it’s just that, fine. You’re not going to be blown away, and if you’re expecting anything more than cheap earbuds, you’ll probably come away disappointed.

The point of these isn’t a mind-blowing audio experience – it’s convenience. Pop these out and throw them in your ear when you’re walking down to get your mail, on the public transit headed to work, or as you’re watching your kid play at the park.

If they’re on your wrist, they’re always there and that’s the beauty of them. Really the only issue I’ve had with them is popping out when I move my wrist in extreme angles and it autoconnected to my phone. It would initially happen about once a day, but once I realized what happened, I just pushed them back in and they immediately disconnected.

The included app was a bit of a pain, too. You have to set them up through Aipower’s app to get the tracking to sync to your phone and I had a ton of problems with it. From the app refusing to register the device, to not syncing my data, the issues were numerous and constant. When it did work, it was fine, but it was a frustrating enterprise, to say the least.

That’s where my list of annoyances end.

I was really surprised with how comfortable the watch is once you put it on. It looks huge in pictures and when you first take it out of the box. It is bigger than other wearables, but it was fine once I placed it on my wrist. I didn’t notice it when I was wearing it, a really important test that the Wearbuds passed.

The silicone band is really comfortable and comparable to the band that comes with an Apple Watch. It’s proprietary and can’t be replaced, but I’m not sure I would even if I could.

The OS is pretty limited but delivers on intention. It tracks your steps and heart rate and has some fitness tracking options, along with displaying the time and date. In other words, all of your basic needs in a wearable.

If you want more than that, you’re probably already considering a more expensive option from Garmin, Fitbit, or Apple anyway. The graphics are a bit low-rent but they get the job done.

All-in-all, I think Aipower has done a pretty good job here, especially for a first time product. The device(s) isn’t without flaws, but I can give them a pass, especially for the low price of the entire package.

Right now on Indiegogo, you can reserve your Wearbuds for under $100, with an estimated shipping date before the end of the year. Aipower is hooking AndroidGuys fans up with a special discount that’ll save you $10 if you use the link above. There are only 50 spots available, so don’t delay!

RHA TrueConnect wireless earbuds review

Up for review today are the RHA TrueConnect wireless earbuds. But, before diving in, I’d like to drop a quick disclaimer. I honestly didn’t know much about RHA prior to the company sending me its latest wireless earbuds. Read on for the full review.

Design

The first thing that struck me when opening the Trueconnect earbuds was the overall quality. From the packaging to the battery case, the overall design of these wireless audio devices is top-notch. There’s also USB-C fast charging and an LED battery indicator.

The hinged case has an aluminum outside shell that rotates up to reveal the earbuds. The solid construction absolutely makes the RHA Trueconnect scream premium. Inside, the earbuds have a similar result. The Airpod-inspired design looks great and the buds are covered in a matte, soft-touch coating.

Let’s just talk about the number of tips that are included with the RHA Trueconnect buds; there are 20 of them if you count the two that are pre-installed on the earbuds. This gives you small, medium, and large combinations of tips to make sure you get a great fit. You even have three sets of Comply Foam editions.

Controls

On the outside-center of each Trueconnect, you’ll find a dedicated button for audio controls. This allows for multiple options to manage audio (play/pause) with a single tap of either earbud while listening to music. The same single motion will answer a phone call from either bud. A double-tap will reject an incoming call.

Unfortunately, the advanced controls while listening to audio get a little confusing after the single tap motion. A double of the left ear will skip forward a track, while it increases the volume on the right side. The reverse is accomplished with a triple-press of the earbuds; the left moves back to the previous track on the left ear and decreases the volume on the right.

It’s a little jarring that the same amount of presses doesn’t have the same result in opposite results on opposing earbuds. I feel like it’s more intuitive to have the double-tap on the left move you forward a track while the same amount of presses should take you back on the right. I’d take the same approach on volume controls with triples controlling the respective decrease and increase with the variable only being the earbud being tapped.

Sound

The RHA Trueconnect do not disappoint on audio quality as the mids and highs are crisp and robust. They are also louder than others I’ve tested in the market from Anker and iFrogz. There’s also an ample amount of bass.

I will say that the bass can be a little too much at times. I’d love to see this toned down to strike a better balance. Otherwise, I was more than happy with the overall sound quality of the earbuds.

Battery Life

The aforementioned case also functions as a battery pack. This adds four separate charges of the Trueconnect while on the go. Once you pair this with five hours of playback per charge, RHA rates the buds to have 20 hours of total playtime. I found this estimation to be fairly accurate. I was able to get similar results during my two weeks of using the Trueconnect.

Colors and Price

Finally, let’s talk price. The Trueconnect will set you back $170 direct from RHA’s website and Amazon. At the time of this post, however, Amazon has them on sale for $130. The earbuds are available in three different colors: black, white, and a dark blue.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed my time with the RHA Trueconnect. They have a premium feel, a plethora of comfort tips, and decent audio playback. I wish they had slightly better audio controls, but otherwise no complaints.

The price is not devastating, but the above $150 crowd has some stiff competition from the likes of Mobvoi, Samsung, and even Apple (yes, they work with Android, too).

US Cellular revises its Unlimited offering with cheaper rates

0

US Cellular on Monday introduced a new approach to its Unlimited rate plan. Starting out at $50 for one line, they are about ten bucks cheaper per month, on average.

While this might sound ideal on the surface, it’s not just about slashing your bill. Indeed, some of the features that were previously included in the basic plan have been relegated to a $10 per month add-on option.

Under the previous plan, the $10 per month add-on gave customers access to HD video streaming. Now it also includes mobile hotspot (now limited to 15GB), full LTE speeds during times of network congestion, and a $10 per month credit when customers use less than 3GB of data in a month.

The best deals available at US Cellular (August 2019)

As was the case with the previous configuration, the new US Cellular unlimited plan gets progressively cheaper when adding more lines. Whereas the old plan started at $65 for one line, the new one is just $50 per month.

Depending on how many lines you have on your plan you could be looking at as low as $30 per line, per month. Contrast that with the previous rate of $40 each for a four-line plan and it becomes a rather good deal, especially for those who care little about data streaming quality or mobile hotspot.

Kick-ass gear from Totallee, mophie, InvisibleShield, MYNT, and Fuse Chicken

0

We’re back with another roundup of cool gadgets worth checking out. While we tend to focus our reviews on mobile phones and accessories, sometimes we get the chance to try things that fall just a bit outside of that space. Nevertheless, we think they’re the sort of things that our readers might enjoy learning about.

For this edition we take a look at an ultra thin phone case, a protective case with a battery built in, high quality screen protector, super-strong cable, item trackers, and more!

Awesome stuff, right? We thought so, too. We like ’em all enough to recommend them so that’s exactly what we’re doing.

Totallee Thin Case

Many of today’s top phones are gorgeous devices built with top-notch materials. What’s more, they tend to be really attractive affairs that have interesting colors. Why be in a hurry to hide all of that or tuck it away in some bulky case?

Totallee is a brand that specializes in ultra thin phone cases that provide scratch protection and add grip but without unwanted thickness. With cutouts for fingerprint readers, cameras, and buttons, it’s about as unobtrusive as it gets.

We were sent a black leather case for the Pixel 3XL but Totallee offers a number of options for this, and other phones. Additional choices include solid black matte, frosted clear, and transparent. Depending on which color phone you have you might want to show it off; opt for the transparent or frost stuff.

Our review unit was easy to snap on and was noticeably thinner than others we’ve used. Given the phone is a tad wide, we appreciate shaving off a few millimeters wherever possible.

The leather has held up nicely over the last few weeks, taking but a few scuffs and scratches in the processes. As we see it, the patina is unique and adds a bit of character to the experience.

It’s not the strongest and most durable case we’ve used but we’re pretty careful with our phones. If that sounds like you, we invite you to check them out. Prices range from about $30-$40 and selection includes a handful of Samsung, Google, and Apple devices going back a couple of generations.

InvisibleShield Glass Elite

When strength and security are synonymous with peace of mind, you don’t cut corners. That’s where InvisibleShield excels: solid protection of your most precious gadget.

The Glass Elite series is the strongest glass yet from the brand, resulting in a scratch-resistant layer atop the display of many popular phones. What’s more, it’s anti-fingerprint tech means you’re not leaving oils and smudges.

The reinforced edges are important and ensure that things don’t go shattering when your phone hits the ground at a weird angle. The screen protector does a tremendous job of preventing cracks from spreading. If you’ve ever dropped your phone on a corner, you know how scary that gets, and how fast.

Installation doesn’t get much easier as each box includes instructions, a cleaning wipe, microfiber cloth, dust removal sticker, and mat. Perhaps best of all, each Glass Elite comes with a lifetime warranty against wear and damage. About $40 from InvisibleShield

Mophie Juice Pack for Samsung Galaxy S10

Battery life on flagship phones in 2019 is excellent, with many people getting far more than a day or two from a  full charge. But, that’s not to say it’s perfect. Some days we end up blowing through our battery much quicker.

Whether you’re concerned about using your battery too quick, or when you don’t want to deal with plugging in for a charge, consider a Juice Pack from mophie. They’re available for a variety of phone models, including the latest devices from Google, Samsung, and others.

We’ve been testing one for the Galaxy S10+ and find it to be the perfect companion for a busy day of Pokemon Go or extended wait times at an amusement park.

While it does give your phone an extra layer of protection, the main draw is the extended life. Put one of these on and you’ll find that you get nearly twice the usage from your favorite phone.

In the case of the S10+ Juice Pack, the 2525mAh battery is able to extend the life of your phone all the way up to around 32 hours and still finds away to retain its Qi-enabled wireless charging. Additionally, your phone will still Fast Charge from Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging, too.

Much like other mophie products, there’s a handy LED indicator to keep an eye on how much juice is left. $99.95 at mophie

MYNT ES

There are few feelings that rival the gut punch that comes with not being able to locate your phone or wallet. Whether you’re leaving the house or driving home from a restaurant, that “where’s my stuff?” moment just stinks.

The MINT ES aims to be the peace of mind that comes with always being able to find your wallet or car keys. Essentially a key fob, it’s slim enough to fit into the back of your wallet without adding bulk. Moreover, it’s really lightweight and unobtrusive.

Tucked inside is a CR3032 battery that lasts up to a year as well as a buzzer that delivers an alarm up to 80dB. Paired to an app (via Bluetooth) on your phone, it’s all you need to locate your missing item. The melody is short and sweet, repeating until you confirm that you’ve found the keys.

You can set the app to notify you if the fob separates from the phone for a determined period of time. As a digital leash, it’s the quick way to ensure your PWK check (phone, wallet, keys) goes without a hitch. Available in black and white colors for $15 at MYNT

MINT H Wireless Item Finder

Raise your hand if you lost track of the TV remote control in the last few weeks. Or, maybe you’ve got a set of keys that are nearly impossible to locate when it’s time to leave the home.

The Mint H is full kit designed for hunting down various items in the home. The bundle comes with six colored trackers and a remote control. Assign each to a specific thing, such as a riding mower key, tool box, or backpack and you’ll not lose track of them again.

These aren’t GPS trackers and won’t provide a “last seen” alert on your phone, but it’s a great way to keep an eye on the stuff you tend to lose. As long as they’re within range of the remote you should have no problems hearing the 90dB buzzers.

The bundle comes with seven CR2032 batteries, one for each component which should allow for up to six months of life. The back of the remote has a spot to write down the various items you’ve got trackers attached to, ensuring you find them easily. $25 at The Mint Beeper

Fuse Chicken Titan C2C Cable

When it comes to cables for charging phones consumers have an exaggeration of riches. There’s myriad designs, styles, colors, and options. And that’s pretty much the case for microUSB, USB C, and Lightning.

The Titan C2C is the sort of cable you turn to if you’re looking for the toughest, most durable of materials. Wrapped in two layers of steel, it bends and conforms but doesn’t fall prey to the fraying and cracking that comes in cheaper cords. It sure as hell won’t get tied up in knots.

Not only is the cable itself super strong, but the ends are reinforced, too. Whether it’s a careless teen, an untrained puppy, or poor habits, you’ll have a hard time fraying the connections or wearing things down. And just to help you sleep better at night, there’s a lifetime warranty.

One meter long (39 inches), it’s the same length as your standard cable so feel free to replace that generic one you bought on sale. $29.95 at Fuse Chicken

Samsung introduces Galaxy Note 10 series

0

Samsung’s back with its latest big thing, on Wednesday announcing its Galaxy Note 10 smartphone. Powered by Android 9 Pie, it’s packed full of powerful hardware and boasts an improved digital stylus experience. Sounds familiar, right? That’s because this is what Samsung does every year about this time.

Actually, before going further, let’s back up a moment. For 2019 we’re not just talking about one model of Note. No, this time around it’s multiple models, the Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Note 10+, and a 5G-ready version of the Note 10+. And that’s not counting the different memory and storage options.

Yes, it’s similar to what Samsung did with its Galaxy S line this year, spreading things out a little bit, giving consumers more choice. Essentially it’s two sizes to choose from, but there’s more than just different screens.

Galaxy Note 10 Hardware

For those who care most about the hardware specifications, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is the sort of device that garners attention. Thanks to its octa-core 2.7GHz processor, the phone is going to hum whether it’s games, emails, recording high-def videos, or dabbling in the desktop-like experience that is Samsung DeX.

To enhance things, and really add to the performance, the Galaxy Note 10 comes with 8GB RAM with 256GB storage. The 5G variant has 12GB RAM and is also supported by 256GB worth of internal space.

As for the Galaxy Note 10+, well it comes in two storage capacities: 256GB and 512GB. Both, though, boast an incredibly generous 12GB RAM. Oh, and it also packs a microSD expansion card slot for up to 1TB of external media.

How big is the Samsung Galaxy Note 10? At 6.3-inches it’s actually smaller than what Samsung puts in its Galaxy S10+. Nevertheless, it’s an AMOLED display with 2280 x 1080 pixel resolution.

The Galaxy Note 10+, meanwhile, comes with a downright massive 6.8-inch display with resolution pushed up to 3040 x 1440 pixels.

Cameras

Similar to what we’ve seen in its Galaxy S10 line, Samsung employs multiple sensors for a tremendous shooting experience. Here we have a triple-lens configuration comprised of a 12-megapixel lens with variable aperture, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 12-megapixel telephoto zoom lens.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Note 10 Pro also isn’t content being just a bigger screen with more memory. There’s a fourth lens included (DepthVision Camera) which features time-of-flight technology.

Also present across the board are optical image stabilization, tracking autofocus, and up to 10X digital zoom. Moreover, the phones house an array of shooting modes and AI smarts. Around front, all models have the same 10-megapixel selfie camera with 80 degree field of view and a F2.2 aperture.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 has a 3500mAh battery while the larger Note 10+ squeezes in a 4300mAh power source. All versions have super fast charging capabilities and support fast wireless charging, too. And, similar to the Galaxy S10 line, it has Wireless PowerShare, meaning you can use the phones to charge other devices, such as Samsung’s earbuds.

S Pen

It wouldn’t be a Note line with the S Pen digital stylus. To that end, this year’s approach gets even smarter and more powerful.

With up to 10 hours of usage on a single charge, it houses a 6-axis sensor and can be used for taking photos, zooming in and out, switching cameras, and controlling volume. Of course it also does note taking, messages, AR doodling, translating, and screen-off memos.

Availability

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10, and the Galaxy Note 10+ will be widely available starting from August 23 with prices starting at $950 and $1100, respectively.

Color options for the Galaxy Note 10s and its 5G variant include Aura Glow, Aura Black, Aura White, Aura Pink, and Aura Red. For the Galaxy Note 10+ models, look for Aura Glow, Aura Black, Aura White, and Aura Blue (Best Buy Exclusive).

Carrier Support

To no surprise, the carriers are lined up and ready to offer support for the Galaxy Note 10 line. AT&T, Spectrum Mobile, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, Verizon Wireless and Xfinity Mobile will carry the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ in stores and online.

Retailer are also ready to sell you one with Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, Sam’s Club, Target, Walmart, Samsung.com and the Shop Samsung app will also carry the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+.

5G Models

The Galaxy Note 10+ 5G will be available exclusively through Verizon Wireless for a limited time. AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile will launch their models at a later date.
