New Motorola Razr specs and pics emerge ahead of announcement

0

With about two weeks to go before Motorola brings back its iconic RAZR brand, the rumor mill has kicked into high gear.

New pictures and hardware specifications have made their way online, giving us an idea as to what to expect.

First things first, Motorola figures to use “razr” for the branding opting to go with all lower case letters. It’s similar to how it treats the Moto series of phones and we hate it. There’s something weird about typing brand names and models out when they don’t have conventional format.

Moving on, the Motorola Razr is alleged to house hardware that fits somewhere in the middle of the pack. Fanboys and enthusiasts might complain, but you gotta cut corners if you expect to stay affordable, right?

Rumors dating back to March indicate the Razr will have an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor with 4GB RAM/128GB storage and 6GB/256GB storage. Reportedly, a 2,730mAh battery powers the show which, if we’re being honest, is a smidge too low for 2019.

The clamshell phone looks to have a 6.2-inch OLED display on the inside and a secondary 600×800 pixel display on its exterior. By all accounts, it appears the phone will very closely resemble the famous ultra-thin flip phone from days gone by.

The new-era Motorola razr is expected to make its debut on November 13.

Visible intros Party Pay for multiple line accounts

0

Digital carrier Visible on Thursday announced that it now offers service to customers with multiple lines.

While some service providers call them “family” plans or “shared” accounts, Visible terms its offering as Party Pay. It’s different from what other carriers do, too.

Forget about trying to split the bill or square up with a friend each month. Rather than having one person responsible for the bill, each member of the “Party” is billed separately. Moreover, you don’t have to worry about who gets what amount of data.

READ: Exclusive interview with Visible CEO

Mix family members with friends or co-workers. You can create or join a party of up to four with each user getting their own unlimited talk, text, hotspot, and data.  It’s the same stuff that single users get with the $40 individual plan.

  • Parties of two will pay $35/mo each
  • Parties of three will pay $30/mo each
  • Parties of four will pay $25/mo each

Any active Visible member can create a Party at Visible’s website by choosing a name, adding images, and then inviting others. As long as they’re active Visible subscribers you’ll all reap the benefits.

Visible uses Verizon’s network for coverage and offers it own selection of smartphones.

Alcatel SmartFlip review

0

Up for review today is a flip phone. Yeah, you’re reading that right. Recently, our Alcatel rep asked if we would be interested in reviewing its latest, the KaiOS-powered flip phone: The Alcatel SmartFlip on ATT. It’s a mouthful of branding, to be sure.

How does the phone fare in a world dominated by “smarter” devices? Here’s what we thought of the Alcatel SmartFlip.

Design

Well… it’s a flip phone. The overall engineering behind the SmartFlip will not catch anyone off guard. It’s a throwback body with a slightly updated engine. It’s made of plastic and looks like it would take a beating. How easily we have forgotten that a phone could take bumps and drops in stride when not wrapped in precious metals and glass.

You’ll find a small 1.44-inch display on the outside (I’d almost forgotten these have “window” screens on the outside cover). Once flipped open, the SmartFlip has a slightly larger 2.8-inch LCD. Neither are overly impressive with a 128×128 pixel resolution on the outside and 320×240 resolution inside.

The first real positive is the large, tactile keys. These are big and have a satisfying travel when pressed. It hearkens back to a time when feedback was a physical thing you could see; I found it quite pleasing.

Above the number pad, you have an answer, end call/power button, a centered OK button for selecting menu items and two travel buttons flanking it on each side.

Above the outside screen, you have a camera module that we’ll cover in just a moment. On the left of the SmartFlip, we locate a 3.5mm headphone and mic combo for media/calls at the bottom with a micro-USB charging port. Opposite it on the right, is a lone volume rocker.

Calls

Taking phone calls on the SmartFlip is a huge deal for the target consumer. This isn’t a smartphone so taking calls is most likely the main selling point of the device. Thankfully, the Alcatel doesn’t disappoint. The phone supports HD calling via LTE, WiFi calling via 2.4GHz support, and also falls back to 3G or 2G if necessary.

The call quality was really good and conversation on both sides was crisp and clear with little disturbance. I did have one Wi-Fi call fail due to a cluttered network, but I’ve had the same on my Pixel. I’ll blame that on the environment and not the SmartFlip.

The speakerphone is on the back of the phone and is a very loud speaker. It did get somewhat distorted at louder volumes, but the downward facing design mostly sounded acceptable when used to take a hands-free call.

Performance and KaiOS

The performance is surprising. Even with low attentions of a dumbed-down phone, I figured the Snapdragon 210 would show its age. Overall, the SmartFlip is pretty damn snappy.

And then there’s KaiOS, its operating system, and the biggest reason we wanted to test the phone. KaiOS has quickly become the 3rd largest mobile OS by filling the gap between the archaic traditional texting phone and the modern smartphone.

Based off the ashes of FireFox, KaiOS mainly runs HTML5 containers as small web apps. The selection is limited, but you’ll have several base apps that you’ll immediately recognize. On the home screen, KaiOS has default shortcuts to Google Assistant, Google Maps, YouTube, and the KaiOS Store.

Yes, three of the four main apps you see when opening the SmartFlip are Google-owned. It’s this integration that sets KaiOS apart here and it’s well deserved. Google invested $22 million dollars in the company’s success.

Honestly, Google Assistant is one of the most crucial elements of the operating system. You can hold down the OK button and use it much as you would on an Android phone for voice searches and general questions. KaiOS has taken it a step further and made Assistant the voice to text dictation engine for the prompt that accepts text input.

This really relieves some of the awkwardness of trying to use the old T9 pecking of the keypad. If you want to send a quick text, you can simply select the entry box and then let the Assistant dictate the message. The same can be done when searching the web via the built-in internet web browser. It’s a nice touch of modern software that sets KaiOS, and the SmartFlip, apart.

The KaiOS store is kinda lonely, but there are some other notable names you can download. Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp round out a few social apps that most people will be accustomed to seeing on their phones.

Worth mentioning here is a small quirk we found in notifications. Not all of them are treated equally on KaiOS. Default selections like texting and emails get a small pop-down shade toast in the UI whereas new items ping the system. However, to see updates in almost any other app requires you to find and open the application.

There is a decent media player client… with one caveat. I was able to play media files via the internal memory of the SmartFlip, but weirdly, I couldn’t get it to recognize the files via microSD storage. The music app does a good job of bringing in the embedded data and media art while playing. Sound via the headphone jack was also pleasant.

Camera

Cutting right to it, this is a 2-megapixel shooter that seems capable of only taking grainy, blurry shots. This is not anything like we get in smartphones, guys. Let’s not pretend that it’s something it most definitely is not. You can take a photo when necessary but that’s about all there is to this portion of the SmartFlip.

There’s also no selfie camera, but even if there were one, what would you do with it on a flip phone?

Battery Life

I can still remember back to the days when my Motorola RAZR would last me a full week on a charge. The Alcatel SmartFlip doesn’t quite meet that mark, but it did last me 3-4 days of general use. The seemingly tiny 1,350mAh battery can easily stretch out enough to take care of most consumer’s needs to where they only need charge twice per week.

Final word

The nostalgia of this phone is undeniable; however it’s built for a certain user base that Alcatel stills sees as viable in today’s market. I enjoyed my time with this device and would easily recommend this to my parents who will never fully use a smartphone. The Alcatel SmartFlip is available on ATT for $59.

Motorola One Action now available in US

0

Announced in August, the Motorola One Action is now available for purchase in the US and Canada.

The phone is available to US buyers as a universally unlocked at Amazon, Best Buy, and B&H Photo Video and, of course, through Motorola.

For Canadian customers, it’s offered at Freedom Mobile today and will come to Motorola.ca in the next few weeks.

Limited Time Offer

For a limited time, consumers can pick up a free 32GB Moto G6 with the purchase of the Motorola One Action.

Motorola’s latest is sold unlocked, runs Android 9 Pie, and features an interesting camera experience that aims to rival the likes of GoPro. It’s Motorola’s first phone to include a triple camera configuration, including the industry’s first 117-degree ultra-action video camera.

Flip the One Action over and you’ll see there are no less than three cameras on the back. The main one is a 12-megapixel shooter with phase autodetection, 1.25µm pixels and a f/1.8 aperture. This means quicker focus quicker and more light in the sensor.

A second, 5-megapixel camera captures depth and allows for natural blur, focal intensity, and great portrait shots. The third rear camera is dedicated to ultra-wide video and offers a 117-degree field of view. What’s more, it’s rotated 90-degrees.

In terms of general performance, the One Action houses a 22.GHz octa-core processor with 4GB RAM and a generous 128GB storage. A microSD expansion card slot allows for up to 1TB of external media.

A 3500mAh battery is tucked inside the phone and should provide well beyond one day’s worth of usage. The 10W rapid charging means less time plugged in and more time out in the world.

Similar to other Motorola phones, this one has a stock Android experience with minimal gestures added. Moreover, it’s also water resistant, comes with a USB Type-C charger, and 3.5mm headphone jack.

Availability

The Motorola One Action retails for $350 which, to us, makes it an incredibly appealing phone for customers shopping on a limited budget. Unlocked, it’s compatible with all four of the major wireless service providers. Look for it in Denim Blue and Pearl White at Motorola’s website.

Free Moto G6 Promo

A limited time promotion sees Motorola giving customers a 32GB Moto G6 for free with the purchase of the One Action. Simply add both phones to your cart and you’ll get the deal.

  • As low as $35 per line with four lines of service
  • Unlimited calls, texting, and data in US, Mexico, and Canada
  • Data speeds may be slowed at times of network congestion

  • Costs $75 for one line of service
  • As low as $45 per line with four lines of service
  • Unlimited calls, texting, and data in US, Mexico, and Canada

As to when the Unlimited Elite plan goes live AT&T only offers up “coming weeks”. More information about these, and other rate plans can be found at AT&T’s website.

AT&T offers an additional 25% discount for military, veterans, and first responders as well as their families.

Apple is coming after the Pixel 3a with the $400 iPhone SE 2 in 2020

0

When Google first launched the Pixel smartphone it was clear the company behind Android was done targeting developers. Instead, it had set its sights on the premium segment of the market and the iPhone in particular. All one need to do was look at the similar design and price to know that Google was going all in and coming after Apple’s iconic device.

Google apes Apple

Unfortunately for Google, the Pixel has not proven to be the iPhone competitor it wants to be. In fact, sales numbers show that even after three years, Google still trails behind several other smartphone manufacturers, and hasn’t been able to crack the top five.

It’s not all Google’s fault, the Pixel is a fine phone. Phone sales have been declining for years now with nearly every premium smartphone maker starting to experience losses and slowdowns.

Part of this has to do with the current generations of smartphones reaching a plateau in specs and features. The other part of the equation is rising costs year to year for phones that feature only minor improvements over the previous year’s model. This leads to people holding onto their phones for longer. Or, we see consumers increasingly opting to purchase a more affordable (read: mid-range) phone when it comes time to upgrade.

Google adapts

With the current state of affairs in mind, Google made the decision to create the Pixel 3a series. In short, it promises essentially the same Pixel experience but in a much more affordable package. It offered the same camera quality you’d find in the Pixel 3 as well as security and OS upgrades for three years. Best of all, it came in at nearly half the price of the Pixel 3.

It turns out that struck a chord with many consumers and the Pixel 3a has been a hit. At one time it was the top-selling unlocked phone on Amazon in the U.S., and it has single-handedly helped improve Google’s hardware sales with the search giant showing an 88% increase in sales year-over-year in the second quarter of 2019 after launching the Pixel 3a.

Apple apes Google

Not one to be left behind, Apple has seemingly decided to come after the market of budget-conscious consumers. Targeting a segment of buyers it has long ignored, it’s expected that Apple will launch a $400 iPhone SE 2 in 2020.

According to rumors, the new iPhone SE 2 will be powered by an A13 processor and feature 3GB RAM. However, it figures to lack many of the other features found in the flagship iPhones. Multiple cameras or Face ID, for instance.

Unlike its predecessor, the sequel to the iPhone SE will feature a larger display similar to the iPhone 8. With that in mind, it appears iPhone SE 2 may have less to do with making a phone for users who prefer a smaller device, and more to do with targeting customers who high-quality phone on a budget.

It’s an interesting turn of events. After years of Google chasing Apple in the premium sector, it appears the tables have turned. Now Apple may be coming after Google in the mid-range because of Pixel 3a success.

Whether you’re a fan of Android or Apple, this is good news for both camps. For far too long, if you wanted a phone that performed like a high-end model, it commanded a premium price. Now, we’re finally seeing manufacturers realize that just because a phone doesn’t cost $1,000, doesn’t mean that it can’t offer a great user experience.

RCA offers up 11 Delta Pro Tablet, a 2-in-1 that’s just $140

0

Big phones are nice and all but tablets are better for reading and consuming media. It’s true, we read it on the internet.

In all seriousness, we love the difference in performance and productivity that comes with a 10-inch screen. Factor in a keyboard and it gets exponentially better. That’s why 2-in-1 devices are so popular.

RCA understands this and wants to get in on some of that action. This week sees the brand — yes, that one — offering up its 11 Delta Pro tablet. Powered by Android 9 Pie, it starts at just $140 and comes with a detachable keyboard.

Available in a variety of colors, the 11 Delta Pro houses a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, and 32GB storage. No, it’s not going to blast through benchmarks or eat into the Microsoft Surface market share, but it will pick up people who might otherwise balk at the price.

The 11 Delta Pro has a 6-hour battery life and features USB, microUSB, microSD expansion card slot, 1 3.5mm headphone jack, and microphone. Additionally, it packs a front-facing and rear camera, too.

The 11 Delta Pro is available in several colors including charcoal, blue, purple, and pink, and can be found in the RCA Shop and Amazon with prices beginning at $139.99.

LG offers up dual screen G8X ThinQ bundle for $700

0

So you like the concept of a dual-screen phone but don’t have Galaxy Fold money to play with. Starting November 1, US buyers will have an alternative that comes in at about one third of the price.

LG on Tuesday announced that it will begin taking pre-orders for the LG G8X ThinQ and its Dual Screen accessory. The phone will be sold through a number of wireless carrier and retailers, including AT&T, Sprint, and Amazon.

First shown off in September, the LG G8X is a single screen phone that can connect to an optional secondary display. Once in place it creates a dual screen, foldable experience.

While it’s not the same seamless, large screen setup that the Galaxy Fold offers, it does have its uses. Gamers, for instance, may like having a dedicated game pad that doesn’t detract or clutter the screen. A full screen keyboard is also helpful for those who might need to pound out a lot of emails and messages throughout the day.

In terms of hardware, the LG G8X comes with some fairly high-end specifications, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB RAM, and 128GB storage.

As for cameras, the handset features a 12-megapixel main lens with a 13-megapixel super-wide shooter on the rear. Around front is a 32-megapixel selfie camera and inside, powering the show, is a 4,000mAh battery.

The LG G8X will cost about $700-780, but you might be able to score pretty good deals on one.

AT&T will give its customers the LG Dual Screen accessory for free when adding a line on a qualifying installment plan. Worth $300, the price of the secondary display is credited to subscribers at $10 per month over 30 months.

Sprint plans to take pre-orders starting November 1 and will price it at $15 per month on Sprint Flex. Both new and current subscribers can take advantage of the offer if they are upgrade-eligible or add a new line of service to an existing account. For a limited time, get an LG Dual Screen for free by mail-in rebate from LG.

LG will have an unlocked version of the G8X ThinQ, with pricing for a bundled LG G8X ThinQ and LG Dual Screen starting at $699.99
