Anker’s audio and charging lines deliver quality on a budget

0

Since its launch in 2011 Anker has become one of our, and America’s, favorite electronic accessories brand. According to the company, more than 30 million people have chosen its chargers, power banks, and speakers in just eight years. You can count us among those fans.

We are pleased to feature Anker in our latest Gear Up which spotlights some of its best portable devices in both the audio and charging space.

Power

PowerPort Atom III Slim

This ultra-thin charging “brick” is the next generation of outlet-powered management. With the latest 3.0 technology, you can charge anything from your phone to even a full-size laptop in only two hours. That tech is made possible by swapping silicon-based components with gallium nitrides. This allows for a more robust and flexible charging adapter.

The Atom also supports compatibility with pretty much anything you can plug into its single USB-C connection. Fast charging for all the major players is here: Apple, Samsung, and Qualcomm. All of this for just $34.99 from Amazon is a steal!

PowerPort Strip PD 2 Mini

Need something a little more powerful with ports for all your things? Anker has that, too. The PowerPort Strip PD 2 Mini is a mouthful of a title but also one of the best home power accessories we’ve seen. This strip is actually a cube, but comes equipped with one USB-C port, two PowerIQ standard USB ports, and two full AC outlets.

All three USB ports get you fast charging with the USB-C pushing up to 18W and the USB-A ports capable of 12W. Rounding out the PowerStrip is a 5-foot cable to plug into your home power outlets. All this makes the Anker PowerPort Strip an awesome compact all-in-one power management option for your household. It’s also only $34 via Amazon.

PowerCore 10000 PD Redux

Going to be traveling for the holidays? The great folks of Anker thought you might. Say hello to the Anker PowerCore 10000 PD Redux. As the name suggests, this small package has a 10,000mAh battery to keep your gadgets charged while away from home.

On top, you have a power LED indicator to always let you know where your capacity stands. The only other input/output on this little guy is a USB-A PowerIQ and a USB-C port. Quick charge is here again on both ports with the same 18W max power output. The USB-C also charges the battery bank itself. At $36 the PowerCore 10000 PD Redux should be in everyone’s overnight bag.

Audio

It’s a good thing you have all those great charging options now to help power all of Anker’s SoundCore audio devices. Whether it’s a full-fledged gathering of your friends and family to some lone listening, Anker has a couple of awesome options.

SoundCore Flare Mini

It’s time to start serenading your loved ones with holiday music over the next few weeks. The Anker Flare Mini could be the perfect companion to your melodies when Bluetooth paired to your devices. This small powerhouse of a speaker has some pretty decent sound with a “flare” of LED colors.

The Flare Mini has a full 360-degree sound with a 5W driver and BassUp technology, providing ample sound for filling a room. Thanks to its 12-hour battery, you can even take it away from a power source, if you want or need. And that ring at the bottom? It offers five modes of customized color that pulses with your tunes.

The Flare Mini is also waterproof with an IPX7 rating so take it with you to the next pool party or liven up your early morning shower. $40 on Amazon

SoundCore Life Q10 Wireless Headphones

Prefer your music in solitude? Maybe the SoundCore Life Q10 wireless headphones are what you need for Christmas. These over-the-ear cans really have a great sound with Anker’s BassUp tech on board and offer an amazing 60 hours of playback.

When they do finally tire out, you can use USB-C quick charge to get five hours of playback in under five minutes of recharge. The Q10 also has Bluetooth 5.0, dedicated buttons for BassUp, volume controls, and 3.5mm auxiliary connection. When not in use, they easily fold up for storage in your bag. The SoundCore Life Q10 headphones are a solid option at $50 from Amazon.

RCA offers up $100 G2 for unlocked phone buyers

0

RCA on Monday began offering its latest smartphone, the G2, through Amazon. Priced just $100, it’s an unlocked device that’s compatible with GSM carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket, Metro, and more.

The RCA G2 is powered by Android 9 Pie and features a 5.5-inch display and comes in two color options: Black and White/Gold.

In terms of cameras, you’ll find an 8-megapixel rear shooter on the G2 with a 5-megapixel front-facing selfie sensor.

Internally, the RCA G2 runs on a 1.5GHz quad-core processor with 3GB RAM. There’s 32GB worth of storage in the device, but a microSD expansion card slot allows for up to 128GB external media.

The target audience for the G2 is one that is shopping with a tight budget in mind and who doesn’t need the bells and whistles of pricier devices. Its hardware is aimed at entry-level users, but there’s enough here to satisfy first-time users or those who need an emergency phone.

The RCA G2 is available at Amazon for $99.99 in Black and White/Gold color options.

Cool gear under $200 (November 2019)

0

Try as we might, there’s simply too much cool technology to keep up with. New products hit the market every and, as much as we’d love to write extensive reviews about all of them, we just don’t have time. To that end, we’re happy to share bite-sized reviews of technology and gear that we find interesting or worth a closer look.

Below you’ll find products that we’re impressed with that all share one thing in common – they’re all under $200. While these aren’t purely electronics or gadgets, we think they’re awesome.

If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, be sure to check out the following:

MW07 Go

The MW07 Go offer up to ten hours of playback on a charge with the carrying case holding another 12 hours. You’re probably only charging your case twice a week, if that.

Present here is USB Type-C charging which promises five hours playtime on a 15 minute charge. The case isn’t fancy or heavy, but it’s modern looking with a “technical knit” fabric that calls to mind the case that came with the first generation of Google Pixel Buds.

The MW07 Go are IPX5 rated against water and sweat, something we’re sure you’ll appreciate when getting a pump on or a few miles on the treadmill. There are two microphones and we had no issues blocking out most environmental sound. And, because they don’t get super loud, it’s like having a built-in ability to tap into ambient noises.

Also worth pointing out, you can use the right earbud by itself if you plan to listen to music in just one ear. Sold in a variety of colors, these are a premium experience that rivals all others. $199 at Master & Dynamic

RHA Trueconnect

The RHA Trueconnect do not disappoint on audio quality as the mids and highs are crisp and robust. They are also louder than others we’ve tested in the market from Anker and iFrogz. There’s also an ample amount of bass; we were more than happy with the overall sound quality of the earbuds.

The hinged case has an aluminum outside shell that rotates up to reveal the earbuds. The solid construction absolutely makes the RHA Trueconnect scream premium. Inside, the earbuds have a similar result. The Airpod-inspired design looks great and the buds are covered in a matte, soft-touch coating.

The aforementioned case also functions as a battery pack. This adds four separate charges of the Trueconnect while on the go. Once you pair this with five hours of playback per charge, RHA rates the buds to have 20 hours of total playtime.

Let’s just talk about the number of tips that are included with the RHA Trueconnect buds; there are 20 of them if you count the two that are pre-installed on the earbuds. This gives you small, medium, and large combinations of tips to make sure you get a great fit. You even have three sets of Comply Foam editions. $170 at RHA

WOpet DO1 treat tosser and food dispenser

We like the build quality of the DO1 treat dispenser and it comes with a fair amount of interesting features. As pet owners, it’s nice to pop in on them when we’re away just to see how things are going.

The camera is as good as any others in the price point and does a decent job of detail and color. We expected a half-baked attempt at the photo and video component and came away pleased with it. Placed near the dog bowls we can get interesting photos of our beloved animals without disturbing them.

When it comes to dispensing treats, there’s a fair amount of power behind it. We typically saw them get about 3-4 feet with the occasional one going further. Our dogs seemed to enjoy the unit and weren’t shy from the cartoon-like sound or the motorized noise.

It’s part pet feeder, part treat dispenser, and part security camera. It’s the sort of device you’d have in your home if you’re prone to spoiling your pets or like to check on them when traveling.

The app gives users the option to snap photos, record video clips, and listen in or communicate with the feeder. Simply speak into your phone and your pet will immediately hear you. $140 at Amazon

Ultimate Ears MEGABOOM 3

When you’re looking to fill a room with block-rockin’ beats, you’d be wise to turn to Ultimate Ears. There’s plenty to choose from in the brand’s portfolio, but few pack the punch that the MEGABOOM 3 does.

With six different colors to choose from, this speaker looks at home in any environment. And that’s indoors as well as outdoors, mind you. That’s right, this speaker is IP67 water and dustproof rated, which means it can be completely submerged in water for up to 30 minutes. Not only that, it floats so you don’t have to dive down to snag it from the bottom of the pool when things get out of hand.

While you can pair it over Bluetooth right away and get going, the real fun comes in the Block Party feature that’s found in the mobile app. Pick up to two friends to connect and share playlists and music.

READ: Ultimate Ear myBOOM Studio: Build a unique kick-ass speaker

It’s not as if you’ll necessarily need more “boom” in one room, but we know how it goes. Connect up to 150 (yeah, that’s right) speakers to create the ultimate surround sound vibe. And it’s not just pairing with other MEGABOOM 3’s either; you can use previous generations of the BOOM and MEGABOOM series.

With up to 20 hours of battery life between charges, your speaker will outlast that all-nighter and then some. Check out the optional Power Up charging dock for a practical way to keep juiced. Other features we love include a customized tuner, sound profiles, and a two year warranty. $199.99 at Ultimate Ears

EZVIZ DB1

Setup and customization is easy and we appreciate that the DB1 can be adjusted to personal tastes. We also like that the doorbell has 2.4GHz and 5GHz connectivity as that makes installation and configuration easier.

The camera is fairly quick to detect people and animals, the two-way communication is convenient, field of view is terrific. It’s hard to argue for more when dealing with a $150 price tag.

The doorbell itself is big and doesn’t do much to hide itself. That’s a good thing, really, as it’s designed to help you not catch people in the act of theft. Speaking of which, it’s possibly a deterrent as it is so obvious.

If you’ve already got EZVIZ products in your home, it makes perfect sense to consider the DB1. The app experience ties everything together and creates a more seamless experience. $150 at Amazon

Lifeproof LIFEACTÍV Power Pack 10

Writing about portable chargers isn’t always as easy as it seems. After a certain point they all tend to sound about the same. Capacities might differ and some may be a little more outwardly attractive, but they’re largely similar. In short, they’re little bricks or platters that we carry around for extra juice.

Imagine our pleasure when we had the chance to test out the LIFEACTÍV Power Pack 10 from Lifeproof. Yes, the same brand that provides waterproof, dirt proof, and drop proof phone cases is doing the same in the portable power supply space.

Indeed, the LIFEACTÍV Power Pack is the sort of power bank that’s designed to go everywhere you go. Whether that means heading to the beach, on a hike in the woods, or sitting out back at the barbecue pit, it’s built for most environments.

With 10,000mAh worth of battery, there’s enough to charge up most flagship phones three times over. And not just by plugging in through a USB port, either. This one also features support for Qi-equipped phones. Of course there is a USB port for those who would rather plug in directly, too.

Other details found in this charger include automatically stopping charge when devices reach 100 percent, an LED flashlight, and four LED indicator lights. You’ll always know just how much gas is left in the tank. Oh, and the handy wrist strap means you won’t accidentally drop this one because it’s covered in water or snow.

A LIFEACTÍV Power Pack 20 is also available with double the capacity. It’s the same price but trades out the wireless charging capability. If that’s not something you need or desire, we say go with the extra life. $100 at LifeProof

Circle Home Plus

With young ones connecting more and more at home how do you as a parent monitor and keep them safe? The Circle Home Plus is a small little box that connects to your router and helps you monitor the usage of devices in your home.

Connecting is very simple; you’ll be adding family members to the account in no time at all. After that you pick the age of the family member and then what kind of content they are allowed to connect with, such as as Amazon, Hulu, Minecraft PE, Neflix, PBS, and YouTube.

Users are able to set time limits for certain things like one hour of YouTube as well as a bedtime for when you want certain devices to stay off the network.

Other features that are worth your attention include historical breakdown of visited sites, time spent online, and just having knowledge as to what devices are connected to your network

There’s hardly any configuration to deal with beyond the initial setup. We like that we can view usage from inside the app, knowing which child is active. You are also able to set reward for your child based on certain things. For instance, we had good report cards so one evening we rewarded the kids with No Time Limit Today and No Offtime Today. $129 from Amazon.

Cricket tempts new customers with special $40 Unlimited BYOD plan

0

Cricket recently began offering a special plan for potential subscribers who plan to keep their existing device.

Available through January 30, 2020, the carrier’s new special $40 “Unlimited BYOD” plan is a limited time offer with a discounted price and the fastest LTE speeds offered. All one has to do is bring their current phone to Cricket.

Indeed, this isn’t offered to existing customers, only those who switch from another carrier. What’s more, it’s not available to those who might switch from AT&T.

READ: Which prepaid carrier has the best $40 plan?

Normally, it’s $55 per month for unlimited talk, text, and data. And even then, data speeds are limited to 3Mbps with video streaming at SD quality.

Under the Unlimited BYOD promotional plan, customers get full speed access to the network, but video streams are still at standard definition.

If you have an unlocked phone and are considering a switch this season, it’s hard to argue with what Cricket has today.

Verizon offers up coverage maps for its 5G network

0

Verizon this week began offering coverage maps for its 5G network, giving customers a chance to see where its new high-speed data might be available.

Although it went months back, Verizon had been reluctant to provide any specific maps. And while it does make an effort to spell out the neighborhoods and landmarks for cities in its press releases, it’s different to actually view coverage.

If interested in seeing where Verizon 5G is offered, you can do so at the carrier’s website. As of now, it’s a matter of selecting which city you’d like to see and zooming in to a block-by-block basis.

Taking a look at Verizon’s 5G coverage map might be somewhat surprising to some as they may anticipate a more thorough network. The reason for that comes down to the type of 5G technology that Verizon is using to build it out. It’s super fast stuff, sure, but it’s highly susceptible to interference by walls, buildings, and other obstacles.

Verizon anticipates having its 5G network live in 30 cities by the end of 2019; as of today it’s at 18 cities.

Google Play Points: Answers to your common questions

1

Google in November 2019 announced that US users would see a new feature in the Google Play Store which acts as a reward system of sorts. Called Google Play Points, it’s a way of giving customers a chance to earn credits on purchases they make in the Play Store.

Given that it’s new to the US there are likely plenty of questions about what is, how it works, and more. Here, we address those and other questions.

What are Google Play Points?

Google Play Points is rewards program where users earn points on anything they might buy through Google Play, including in-app purchases.

Points earned can be used for discounts, Google Play Credits, or special items and content in apps and games. What’s more, one can also use the points to support a cause.

Where are Google Play Points offered?

As of today Google Play Points are available to customers in the United States, Japan, and Korea. Other countries are expected to offer the program in due time.

How are Google Play Points calculated?

Google has four levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum) in which customers fall. Each has a set number of points which must be earned in order to qualify for and comes with additional benefits.

Level and Points Needed

  • Bronze – 0 to 149 points
  • Silver – 150 to 599 points
  • Gold – 600 to 2,999 points
  • Platinum – 3,000+ points

How do I earn Google Play Points?

After joining, customers automatically earn points on Google Play purchases made using the enrolled Google account. Previous purchases do not qualify.

Points can be earned on apps, games, in-app purchases, subscriptions, books, movies, TV shows, and music. Google Play Music subscriptions and individual purchases of TV shows also qualify.

Points are earned on ever dollar spent in the Play Store; each level comes with an gradually increasing rate at which they accumulate.

Points Earning Rate

  • Bronze – 1 point per dollar
  • Silver – 1.1 points per dollar
  • Gold – 1.2 points per dollar
  • Platinum – 1.4 points per dollar

Google also offers users a chance to earn points for simply installing select apps and games. Note, that should you return a purchase you will lose the earned Google Play Points.

How do I check my Play Points?

From any Android phone, simply open the Google Play Store and look for the menu. In there you’ll find a dedicated “Play Points” section.

This is where you’ll find your points, level, and ways to earn and use points and perks. If interested, you can also check the expiration data and history.

What are the benefits of different levels?

Google provides weekly events where customers can earn additional points. Further, there are monthly events on movie rentals and books which earn more points. The higher your level, the better the rate at which you earn points.

The Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels also have weekly prizes available to users who fall under the them.

Bronze

  • Up to 4x points in games during weekly events
  • Up to 2x points on movie rentals and books during monthly events

Silver

  • Up to 4x points in games during weekly events
  • Up to 3x points on movie rentals and books during monthly events
  • Weekly Silver level prize up to 50 points

Gold

  • Up to 4x points in games during weekly events
  • Up to 4x points on movie rentals and books during monthly events
  • Weekly Gold level prize up to 200 points

Platinum

  • Up to 4x points in games during weekly events
  • Up to 5x points on movie rentals and books during monthly events
  • Weekly Platinum level prize up to 500 points
  • Premium support from dedicated agents

Where can I spend my Google Play Points?

There are a variety of ways customers can use their points, including in-app items such as special characters, gems, skins, and more. Select developers have partnered with Google to allow for coupons which can be used directly in apps and games. Among the early developers are Niantic, Rovio, and King.

Additionally, points can be used toward renting movies, buying books, or supporting causes like Doctors Without Borders USA.

Will my Google Play Points ever expire?

Points will expire one year after the last activity with points, either by earning or using them.

Will my Play Points level expire?

In a word, yes. Once you reach a new level, you stay there until the of the next calendar year. At the start of each calendar year, your level could change based on points earned in the previous year.

Cool gear under $50 (November 2019)

0

Try as we might, there’s simply too much cool technology to keep up with. New products hit the market every day and, as much as we’d love to write extensive reviews about all of them, we just don’t have time. To that end, we’re happy to share bite-sized reviews of technology and gear that we find interesting or worth a closer look.

SEE: Cool gear you can get for less than $100

Below you’ll find products that we’re impressed with that all share one thing in common – they’re all under $50. While these aren’t purely electronics or gadgets, we think they’re awesome.

Adonit Pro 4 Stylus

It’s not difficult to find a stylus for smartphones and tablets as sometimes they’re even given away as freely as business cards, hand sanitizer, or fidget spinners. It’s tough, though, to find a quality one that won’t be later tossed away or forgotten about.

The Adonit Pro 4 is entirely unlike a generic stylus. Built from lightweight aluminum, there’s a copper twist cap that fits on both ends. Moreover, there’s a groove cut into the body which allows for easy hooking onto pockets, bags, and other items.

Rather than that soft rubber foam tip, the Pro 4 has a precision disc made from PET materials. While it looks like you’d want to take it off before use, it lets users get a fine-point line every time. It’s easy to see the ballpoint pen-like tip and know exactly where your lines and markup will be.

If you’re into graphic arts, sketching, highlighting text, and other stylus-based activities, you’ll find the stylus works equally well. Offered in black, silver, and gold colors, it’s equal parts eye catching and practical. $30 at Adonit and Amazon

Gear4 cases

You don’t have to add bulk to your phone to give it a solid security blanket. The Gear 4 Battersea, which has a soft-touch finish and slim profile, protects your handset against scuffs, scrapes, and drops up to 16 feet. Thanks to D30 material, it’s light yet tough, and lets Gear 4 focus on aesthetics. $50 at Gear4

Gear4 Battersea for Pixel 4

If you’d prefer to show off that sexy phone, opt for a case that provides a clear back. The Crystal Palace case might look like a standard or slim plastic backing but it’s pretty solid stuff. Indeed, it also houses D30 and allows for a formidable shell that’s thin enough to still allow for wireless charging. Oh, and you can still drop it to the tune of 13 feet. $40 at Gear4

Gear4 Picadilly for Pixel 4

Grab a Picadilly case if you’d like to add a stripe of black along the edges and you’ll also have a lip that wraps the front of the face of your phone. $40 at Gear4

EarFun Free

Sound gets plenty loud and we found ours fit the ear nicely using the out-of-box tips. Pairing is nice and easy and connection happens immediately. Also, listeners can use just the right earbud if they want to leave one ear exposed.

We appreciate the Bluetooth 5 connectivity as it lets us get to around 50 feet away from the music source. And, once paired they connect automatically just by opening the case and taking them out.

EarFun Free

When it comes to buying wireless earbuds or headphones from unfamiliar brands we’re reluctant to part with too much money. The problem with that is spending too little leads to its own problems. With that in mind, we’ve seen earbuds at this price that don’t have the flexibility of the EarFun Free.

If you own a wireless charger or one of Samsung’s recent phones with built-in charging, you’ll dig the extra feature. Not that you’ll use it too often because the case packs 30 hours of playback.

Xcentz 36W PD Wall Charger

It’s pretty tough to get excited about a wall charger, but we do find ourselves really happy with this one. Given we’re often charging a phone, Chromebook, Pixelbook, Nintendo Switch and or something else, we like the flexibility.

This is a charger that houses both a USB-C (PD) and a USB Quick Charge 3.0 port. Both ports allow for 18W charging, meaning you can get a total of 36W output at once.

It’s more stylish than it needs to be with an interesting color scheme. The charger looks good in any environment and travels well.

There’s an 18-month warranty that comes with the charger, which is about six months longer than what others do. That’s peace of mind, and worth a few bucks on its own. $18 at Amazon

Invisible Shield screen protectors

When it comes to protecting our phones, it’s not just the fancy metal and shiny back that needs to be kept safe. No, today’s handsets have screens that are bigger than ever and which make up nearly the entire front of your device. That glass needs just as much attention.

Invisible Shield has been in the game of making protective coating for screens for years, and it keeps getting better. What’s more, we’ve moved far beyond the days where there’s just one option. There are no less than three options to choose from today for phones like the Google Pixel 4.

The Glass Elite is made of aluminosilicate glass which is four times stronger than traditional screen protectors. Easy to apply, thanks to the included mat and tray, it’s smooth as silk and doesn’t attract smudges and oils. Scratches never stood a chance. $40 at ZAGG

The Glass Elite VisionGuard take things up a notch, adding in a blue light filter that blocks that harmly light. And no, this isn’t that yellow tint you get from your phone’s software settings. Your eyes will thank you. $45 at ZAGG

Then there’s the Elite Glass VisionGuard+ which has all of the aforementioned features plus anti-microbial technology. What this means to you is defense against germs and bacteria, or that junk that tends to stick to lesser quality brands. $50 at ZAGG

TREBLAB xFit

We’ve been impressed with the fit of the xFit earbuds. They are weighted enough to not add bulk, but still small enough to seat well inside the ear. we usually have issues with smaller buds like these working their way out of the ear while exercising, but this has not been the case with the xFit.

The sound of the xFit also does not reflect its small stature. While the earbuds won’t win a contest when lined up against a great wired headset, the xFit to have good sound for the size. Mids and highs are crisp with just a punch of bass when needed.

Treblab estimates the xFit battery life to 30 hours of total playback. This is a combination of five hours of play with just the earbuds and five recharges via the case. $30 at Amazon

Ravpower 10000mAh portable charger

Smartphones might be getting bigger with each generation, but portable charging banks seem to be getting smaller. This rev power unit delivers 10,000mAh worth of juice, which is good enough to power your phone up three to four times over. Hell, some phones might even get up to five. Portable enough to fit in your hand, it’s barely the size of a harmonica or candy bar.

You’ve got four LED lights to let you know how much juice is left in the battery, with each representing around 25% life. The USB and USB Type-C ports for charging of two device at once, both of which are very fast. Tuck this one away in your pocket without feeling much heft. It’s a perfect companion to a long work day or a few hours playing Pokemon Go at the park. $44 at Amazon

BESTEK Universal Travel Adapter

Why use your wall outlet to charge one or two items at a time when you can use it for up to seven devices? That’s exactly what you get in this universal travel adapter. That’s right, it’s not just a power strip, or something with a few USB ports added in, but something which adapts power.

This one travels anywhere you go, even if that means another country. Included in the box are converters for other countries including Australia, China, and United Kingdom so feel free to pack this one in your luggage.

The four USB ports can automatically detect the types of devices plugged in and intelligently decides the most efficient charge. With a maximum output of 250 watts, it’s the sort of all-in-one charger that a family might want on a holiday getaway.

There are a lot of great reasons to purchase one of these, but perhaps best of all, though is the two year warranty.
