Philips Hue expands outdoor range for 2020

0

Philips Hue at CES this week, announced a number of new products for its 2020 lineup. Key among them are low-voltage outdoor lights with plug-and-play capabilities as well as brand new models. Additionally, it is adding voice control for the Play HDMI Sync Box and new features to its mobile app.

Outdoor Hue light fixtures aren’t new, but the 2020 models figure to be more stylish, plus they have additional smarts. Indeed, many of its new products have Bluetooth capabilities so there’s no need for a Hue Hub to use them.

  • Appear: This wall light creates a sharp, directed triangle of light both up and down for a strong light effect.
  • Resonate: Available in both black and silver, the Resonate creates elegant, up-and-down triangles of light.
  • Attract: This wall lantern offers a unique light effect that casts a subtle arc of colorful light against the wall.
  • Daylo: This circular wall light is available in stainless steel or black and provides a subtle, backlit glow.
  • Nyro: The angular and architectural Nyro family includes wall light and path light options.

Philips Hue is adding some low-voltage options to its range, making it even easier for consumers to plug and play. They’ll integrate with the existing wall lights, spot lights, and path lights. These are more or less alternatives or siblings to current models

  • Lily: The new Lily XL spot light is larger and provides a more powerful light output.
  • Impress: The popular Impress wall light is now available in a low-voltage version.
  • Econic: Another outdoor favorite, the Econic family now features a low-voltage version.

Among the latest additions to the outdoor collection are wall-mounted fixtures and pathway lights. There are 16 million colors and 50,000 shades of warm-to-cool white light for effortless personalization to create the perfect atmosphere in one’s outdoor space.

Availability

Philips Hue hasn’t detailed exactly when each of the new products will debut in North America, but it indicates the Appear, Lily XL, and Econic arrive in March.

Other Updates

Two other Hue updates coming out this week include the ability to use voice control for Google Assistant, Alexa, and Siri for its Hue Play HDMI Sync Box. The box synchronizes your lights with what’s being displayed on your TV whether it be movies or games.

Secondly, the Philips Hue app is also picking up a software update to display respective battery level for accessories which rely on them. Further, its “Zones” feature is coming out of beta. This makes it more intuitive and user-friendly to group lights within rooms or collect multiple rooms together.

Instead of lighting up an entire living room it would be possible to brighten a corner. Or, rather than turning on one room at a time, you might have the upstairs zone power on all at once.

Vizio refreshes TV and sound bar lineup for 2020

0

For CES 2020 Vizio is in Las Vegas to show off a TV lineup that’s been refreshed with hardware and software improvements. Moreover, it has some fun things in store for its sound bars, too.

SmartCast

One of the key changes for this year is the inclusion of SmartCast UI 4.0. Available in the 2020 models, it allows for easier switching between inputs, customization settings, and a new remote control with push-to-talk voice capabilities. According to Vizio, the software is expected to reach existing TVs dating back to 2016.

SmartCast already works with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Siri; however, the new version is reported make it easier to pair with Assistant and Alexa-compatible devices via the SmartCast Mobile app. The voice remote can also support Wikipedia searches, weather updates, and more.

Worth noting, Vizio says that it will offer OLED options, a first for the company. While it hasn’t named the source for panels, or even a series/model, 4K Vizio OLEDs at 55″-65″ space could pave the way for a much more competitive space. Skagen Falster 3 announced with Snapdragon 3100 and 1GB RAM

0

Skagen has just announced the latest Wear OS-based smartwatch, the Falster 3. Available immediately, it keeps pace with other modern watches based on the platform.

Key among the updated features in this generation are the inclusion of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 processor as well as a speaker which can be used for alert and taking calls.

Priced $295, it largely resembles the Falster 2 with its rotating crown and two side buttons. To us, the Skagen is a more stylish and fashionable approach to Wear OS than others in the Fossil line.

Internally, the Falster 3 is nearly identical to the Fossil Gen 5 which includes 1GB RAM and 8GB storage. The case measure 42mm which is right about the median size for Wear OS watches.

Other noteworthy features include NFC for mobile payments, GPS, and a waterproof protection up to 30 meters. Similar to other recent Wear OS models, users can toggle various battery modes to extend the life per charge.

The addition of a speaker makes it possible to hear callers as well as music, audible translations, and other Google Assistant-based responses.

The Skagen Falster 3 is available in leather and metal mesh bracelet straps as well as a silicone mesh option. Users can replace the straps with standard 22mm bands. A limited edition variant is on the horizon, thanks to a collaboration with Norwegian DJ Kygo.

The Skagen Falster 3 is priced $295 and can be purchased today wherever Fossil and Skagen watches tend to be sold. The Kygo version goes on sale later this spring.

Whistle FIT wearable for dogs monitors your best friend

0

Whistle has been making pet-tracking products for a few years now, having first gotten started with what many termed a “Fitbit for dogs”. Over time it evolved to include GPS-enabled tracking devices which could be used to locate lost pets. For 2020, however, its new product isn’t about tracking so much as better understanding your dog.

The Whistle FIT, available on January 21 ($80) is a collar-worn device that monitors your beloved dogs activities and behaviors. Paired with a mobile app, it gives owners insight and recommendations based on variables such as age, weight, and breed.

Similar to many of today’s activity trackers (for humans), it can show active minutes, calories burned, distance traveled, and more. Indeed, it can reveal whether your dog has been excessively scratching, licking, and sleeping.

According to Whistle, FIT can detect 50+ samples of a dog’s movements every second. The company then analyzes this information to detect behavioral patterns that you might need to know about. It plans to leverage that data and introduce additional features over time.

Whistle Labs also added a Nutrition feature to its portfolio which will work with the FIT as well as its existing GO and GO Explore trackers. With a database of 3,000+ types of dog foods, it can calculate the amount that an owner should be giving its dog based on age, breed, weight, activity level/calories burned, and type of dog food.

Availability

The Whistle FIT will be available to order on January 21st for $79.95. A Whistle Wellness subscription is required for each device and cost $35.40 per year, or $2.95 per month.

Roborock unveils H6 handheld vacuum at CES

0

Roborock, a Chinese brands that specializes in advanced home robotics and vacuum cleaners, has revealed its first handheld unit, the H6.  At the same time, it introduced a more wallet-friendly approach to its S6 robot vacuum.

Roborock H6

After having been in the works for nearly three years, the Roborock H6 arrives with a stick design and plenty of accessories in tow. Features include a 3,160mAh battery, a 420W motor, and 140 AW (air watts) of suction power. Oh, and that battery? It’s Lithium-Ion Polymer, a first for the cordless stick industry.

According to Roborock, the H6 can get up to 90 minutes of usage in Eco Mode. Switch over to Max Mode, though, and you’ll get around 10 minutes of usage.

The H6 weighs in at a just three pounds which means it travels very well. Not only is it good for floors in the home and office, but it’s designed to clean cars, beds, furniture and other hard-to-reach spots.

A five-stage air purification system filters up to 99.97% of particles that you’ll suck up, putting out only the purest of air in the end. It will grab pollen, dander, mites, and other incredibly tiny (0.3μm) particulates.

Drawing on its track record of solid robot  vacuums, the Roborock H6 can automatically detect when it’s on carpet. As such, suction power is increased to the tune of nearly 4000RPM. On hard floors it hums along at 1100RPM with a soft floor brush roller lifting dust and debris.

Roborock has tested and tuned its H6 for endurance; it retains 85% of its power after 600 cycles and can handle at least 800 cleaning hours.

A 1.3-inch OLED screen displays how much battery remains and also provides at-a-glance view of the cleaning mode. It can also alert the user when it’s time for a little bit of maintenance. Speaking of which, the front and rear filters, and entire dustbin are removable for washing.

Roborock S6 Pure

Roborock hasn’t offered up too many details on its latest robot vacuum, the S6 Pure, but we do understand that it features the same high-precision laser navigation system and advanced mapping software that’s found in the S6. Likewise, it’s equipped with thirteen sensor types that help it avoid falls and automatically activate boost mode when carpet is detected.

The S6 Pure includes a tank that holds up to 180ml of water which is good for up to 1,600+ square feet (150sm). This puts it about 30 percent higher capacity than the S6.

Availability

The Roborock H6 and Roborock S6 Pure will be available for $449 and $549, respectively, when the arrive in Q2.

Look for the EF-100W (White) and EF-100B (Black) on sale for $999.99 in late January.
