AliExpress offering KN95 masks

0

It’s getting pretty hairy out there as the COVID-19 coronavirus looks to be getting worse in parts of the world, affecting business, travel, sports, and other events.

While we’re stuck at home, only venturing out to get the essentials, we’ve come to rely pretty heavily on online shopping. And when we do shop for items, they’re not always guaranteed to be in stock. Take toilet paper, thermometers, disinfecting wipes, and N95 masks. It’s not easy to find those products.

Online retailer AliExpress has an assortment of face masks, filters, and other health and protective gear. Indeed, the same place that offers a wide range of electronics and not-so-essential gadgets has medical supplies.

Recognizing that hospitals, first responders, and other caregivers need to be equipped before everyday type people, general consumers want peace of mind, too.

If you’re in the market for protective masks, consider the following offer. AliExpress has masks available in quantities of 10, 30, and 50. Prices start as low as $1.99 each.

KN95 Face Mask

$39.99 (10 pieces) | $79.99 (30 pieces) | $99.99 (50 pieces)

  • Filtering up to 95 percent
  • Anti PM2.5, haze, dust and bacteria, etc.
  • Four-layer fabric resists fine particles and bacteria in air pollution

Whether to buy for yourself, or to give to someone on the front lines, you can order the masks with free shipping to the US.

AT&T Prepaid and Cricket now offering $15 rate plans

0

AT&T on Friday announced that its AT&T Prepaid and Cricket brands will offer new rate plans for customers. Effective immediately, both provide subscribers $15 monthly options which include unlimited talk, text, and 2GB high speed data.

The new plans are available to both current and prospective clients; neither service provider is charging an activation fee for signing up.

It’s worth noting that both carriers are only offering these plans as a temporary measure. T-Mobile’s Connect plan, by contrast, showed up early but expects to stay here for the long term.

Also in response to the ongoing financial downturn, AT&T Prepaid is automatically adding 10GB of high speed data for 60 days to existing customers with capped plans. Those who sign up for a capped plan after April 26 will receive the extra 10GB for 30 days. The new $15 plan is not eligible.

Rounding things out, those with an Unlimited Plus plan with Mobile Hotspot data, and new anyone who signs up for the Unlimited Plus plan prior to April 26 will temporarily get 10GB of extra Mobile Hotspot per month for 60 days. Similarly, new customers who activate after April 26 will get the extra 10GB of data for 30 days.

Cricket is offering pretty much the same to its customers, adding 10GB data to rate plans and/or 10GB of hotspot to plans. It doesn’t spell out the timing, but says it will be added to existing and new customers.

Samsung latest tablet is $280 Galaxy Tab A 8.4 with LTE support

0

Samsung on Wednesday announced its latest Android tablet, the updated 2020 version of its Galaxy Tab A 8.4. Features include LTE support, a generous battery, and mass-market $280 price tag.

Powered by Android 9 Pie (weirdly), it has Samsung’s custom One UI and offers up an 8.4-inch display at 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution. There’s a 5-megapixel camera on the front side of the tablet for selfies and video calls. Around back is an 8-megapixel camera.

With an Exynos 7904 processor and 3GB RAM it should be plenty powerful for most consumer needs. Storage capacity is just 32GB but a microSD card slot allows for up to 512GB external media.

Rounding out the hardware are a 3.5mm headphone jack, dual-speakers with Dolby Atmos, USB Type-C charging port, and a 5,000mAh battery. According to Samsung this is good enough for up to 10 hours of typical usage.

Availability

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.4 has support for LTE, and is sold directly through Samsung’s website. For now it can only be paired with Verizon or sold as a WiFi-only model. Looking ahead, there will be versions for AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular, too.

YouTube Music for Android now displays lyrics to now playing screen

0

YouTube Music is one of the most popular music streaming apps available out there and it has over 20 Million subscribers and millions of songs in multiple languages to stream. The YouTube Music app is available to download for both Android and iOS devices and the app now introduces a new feature that displays song lyrics on the now playing screen whenever you are playing a song from within the app.

You can access the lyrics for the songs it is available by simply tapping on the info icon to the left on the name of the song that is currently playing from the now playing screen. Once you tap on the info icon, there is a new ‘Lyrics’ section in the end apart from the previously existing options like likes and views count, artist and album information. There is also information about where the lyrics were extracted from at the bottom of the lyrics panel.

This new built-in lyrics feature is similar to the one Apple introduced last year to Apple Music in iOS 13 which also displays built-in lyrics to the currently playing song with a live transition to the current line. However, the built-in lyrics feature in the YouTube music app is currently just static and does not advance to the current line as the song plays like the feature in Apple Music. The lyrics section is available under the info screen irrespective of whether the lyrics are available for a particular song or not.

The new built-in lyrics feature is currently only available to the YouTube music Android and iOS apps, however, you might soon expect the feature to make its way to the web app as well. Since the feature has just started to roll out it might take a while before the lyrics are added to the millions of songs in the YouTube Music library. YouTube is said to get updated lyrics for the songs from LyricFind on a daily basis, so you can expect most of the songs to have built-in lyrics soon enough.

Samsung Galaxy S20 sales see flagship getting $200 discount

0

Samsung has dropped the price of its Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ phones by some $200 at a couple of major retailers. With the discount it puts the starting prices of each model at just $800 and $1,000, respectively.

Whether related to the coronavirus or not, the lower price comes quickly. The phones were just released a few weeks back (March 6) so the timing is interesting.

Given the current economic uncertainty, and the fact that people aren’t all too excited to fork over huge chunks of money right now, we can understand why Samsung might drop the price.

It’s not clear how long Samsung will keep this price down. It hasn’t exactly advertised the $200 discount so we’d assume it’s short term.

If you want to take advantage of the major savings, head to Amazon and Best Buy before it ends. Look for the phone in a variety of colors and storage options.

Verizon adds extra 15GB data for consumer and small business plans

0

Verizon is giving its consumers and small business users an extra 15GB of high speed data at no cost. The move, which comes as a direct result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, automatically adds the data with no customer action needed.

Also announced this week, low-income customers on Verizon’s Lifeline program will have their internet and voice service charges waived for two months.

A post on Verizon’s website shares other details as to what the carrier is doing to help combat the struggles facing consumers and small business owners. After already dialing down the number of retail stores open in the US, the remaining locations have adjusted work hours (11AM-4PM), including closing on Sundays.

The new Verizon retail experience looks like this, at least for a few weeks:

  • All Verizon owned and operated stores will be closed on Sundays through April 12.
  • Stores that are open will operate on further reduced hours Monday thru Saturday, 11 AM-4 PM.
  • In order to increase social distancing and allow more employees to take advantage of work from home, we’ve reduced by 50 percent, the number of employees working shifts in our retail locations and we are paying employees for any shifts they may miss due to these scheduling changes.
  • The number of customers in a store may not exceed the number of employees working at any given time in order to promote social distancing.

US carriers continue scaling retail experience

0

Several of the largest wireless service providers have taken steps to help keep US customers safer, including temporary closure of retail stores.

AT&T further tightened things up, opting to keep one location open in each 20-mile radius in urban and suburban areas. For rural areas, AT&T widens the radius to 30 miles. Learn more at AT&T’s website.

Previously: AT&T plans to close around 40% of its company owned retail stores around the country. What’s more, those that do remain open will have limited business hours and operate using safety measures.

Verizon recently indicated that it will reduce the number of Verizon stores which are open, but did not lay out hard numbers or locations. As for the stores which will remain in operation, they’ll have limited working hours. They’ll be closed on Sunday and only open to public from 11AM-4PM on other days.

T-Mobile, for its part, says it is closing down approximately 80% of its stores, leaving just one in five open to help service customers.

Sprint is closing down roughly 71% of its retail stores across the country, leaving open its most vital locations. Among the closures are stores located in Walgreen’s malls, and all stores in Puerto Rico. Even then, the stores that will stay open are going to see reduced hours of operation.

Google Assistant now answers your Coronavirus related questions

0

Google has added a new function to its Google assistant called ‘Coronavirus tips’ which is a shortcut that could be accessed by either clicking on the shortcut from the Google Assistant app or by using the command ‘Do I have Coronavirus’. Once you use the command, your Google Assistant will show you a symptoms page for the Coronavirus where you could get detailed information about the symptoms, causes, and prevention for the virus.

The Google Assistant also responds with a short voice message giving you information about the Coronavirus, the symptoms, and the latest updates. You can also click on other useful links provided on the results page to learn more about the virus and get the latest news. The new Coronavirus tips function in the Google Assistant could also be accessed by clicking on the ‘Coronavirus tips’ shortcut on the home page or the discover page of the Google Assistant.

You can also select other relevant shortcuts like tips for working from home, how to wash your hands, and even set a reminder to wash your hands. Google Assistant will also provide you with the latest news updates in the relevant topics once you use the Coronavirus tips shortcut from the home page of the app. The aim of this new shortcut is to spread as much awareness as possible and also help people to get the right information especially with so many misinformation and fake news about the virus out there.

Apple also has added a similar function to its digital assistant Siri, which essentially asks you a series of questions about the Coronavirus symptoms to help you to self-diagnose yourself or to just learn more about the virus. While the Google Assistant just redirects you to relevant websites with information about Coronavirus, hopefully, we can see a similar functionality added to it soon by Google.
