Novostella offers smart lighting for budget buyers

In the off chance you didn’t know it, smart homes are really cool. Ask around and you’ll surely understand that having a house with devices connected to one another is not just convenient, but really awesome.

There are plenty of ways to get started with a smart home, regardless of budget. You don’t have to begin with an appliance like a washing machine; you can start as small as a single speaker. Or a light bulb.

The connected and smart light space is an increasingly crowded one with all sorts of wonderful options. And while consumers might be tempted to first reach for familiar brands like GE or Philips, they’re far from your only options. Indeed, Novostella is one such company who offers an array of smart light products.

Our team was provided with a couple of sample units for review; we were sent a two-pack of 20W Smart LED Flood Lights and a three-pack of 13W (A19 E26) Smart LED Light Bulb. We’ve had them in place for about two weeks now, putting them through some of the normal day-to-day paces. What follows are some of our impressions and review of Novostella’s products.

Setup

We’ve had plenty of experience setting up smart devices, including other brands of lights. Our first instinct is to just skip the instruction manual and jump in, but that’s always wise. And we don’t recommend doing that here.

As a brand that we’ve not worked with before, we looked through the paperwork and installed the accompanying app. Going through the process wasn’t all that difficult but we didn’t stick directly to the app. Why? For starters, it’s not a Novostella app; it’s called Smart Life and doesn’t match up directly with products or models.

Skimming through, we recognized that it was going to revolve around powering on and off the lights in rather quick succession. For the flood lights it was a case of plugging in, unplugging, plugging in, etc. For the more traditional bulbs it was simply flicking the light switch on and off.

Doing that about three times prompted the lights to start flashing, signaling they were in pairing mode. From there, we did proceed with the “automatic” part of the app.

The app found each bulb easily and lets you identify them individually in the app. You can name them, add them to rooms, and do some basic configuration. If you don’t have Google Assistant or Alexa setup, you can control everything from here.

Usage

Once we had the bulbs named and grouped we went into the Google Home app and added them to the network. That’s as easy as logging in with the Smart Life credentials. You will need to set up the rooms and lights again, especially if you plan to use voice controls.

Inside the Smart Life app you can manage the lights, selecting specific colors and hues. You can turn them on and off individually, brighten, schedule automatic shutoff, and more.

We appreciate that there’s no extra hub or bridge to mess with, or purchase. Some of the earlier generations of lights, and a few that you can still buy today, do require extra hardware.

20W Smart LED Flood Lights

  • Wattage: 2-Pack 20W Smart RGBCW LED Flood Lights
  • Lumen: Max 2000LM, 80+CRI
  • Cord Length: 3.28ft/1.5m US Plug
  • Waterproof: IP66
  • Wireless Type: Wi-Fi 2.4GHz (not supprot 5GHz)
  • Lighting Color: RGBCW (RGB+Warm White+ Daylight White)
  • Working Temperature : -25℃ ~ 40℃
  • Input Voltage: 100-240V AC, 50/60Hz

It’s pretty easy to get accustomed to controlling lights by voice, or letting them work independently based on time of day or other conditions. Once we set up our lights we pretty much stopped using the Smart Life app. More often than not we let the bulbs turn on automatically and use a routine (Good night) to shut them off.

We’ll ask Google to adjust colors from incandescent to daylight or soft white; sometimes it’s by voice, others it’s in the Google Home app. Picking colors is done the same way, adjusting to crimson, chocolate, smitten, deep blue sky, or forest green, among dozens of others.

General Impressions

The traditional bulbs are currently found in a ceiling fan which we’ve left “physically” powered on at the switch. They’ll come on automatically at a set time, but we also ask Google to adjust them.

Having all three light a room from the top feels just as natural as any other bulbs, so long as you use something between white and yellow. Switching to colors is a little strange but it does look cool.

13W Smart LED Light Bulbs

  • Wattage: 13W (120W Equivalent)
  • Bulb type& Light Base: A19/E26
  • Input Voltage: 100-240V AC
  • Color Temperature: 2700K-6500K
  • Max Luminous flux: 1300lm
  • Beaming angle: 270 Degree
  • Protection Rating: P20
  • Color: RGB, Cool White, Warm White

If you’ve never added smart bulbs to your home, we suggest starting with lamps first. Having a few of them in one room looks cooler when you switch them up to different colors. The glow that comes from a lamp seems to work better than one from a ceiling fan, but that’s no fault of Novostella. Simply put, rooms show off color better when it’s glowing on a wall.

Although the flood lights we have are designed to withstand weather and the elements, we’ve kept them indoors for now. We’ve leaned them back on their base and have them glowing from the TV stand.

We wanted to get a feel for how well they work, how bright they are, and what sort of control we had on them before moving outdoors. With that said, we’re considering adding a few of these to the exterior of the home. They’re incredibly bright and look to be easy to screw into a base.

Perhaps we’ll tie them to a motion light and have them flash red at night if movement is detected in the back yard. Or maybe we’ll have them shine different colors for seasons, holidays, or events.

Conclusion

Prior to our review units we were not all that familiar with the Novostella brand. After spending a few weeks with its products, we’re more than willing to look to Novostella for future needs.

Aside from the two types of lights we tested there are other options available from Novostella, including light strips. Further, there are products which do not have the full color spectrum but just degrees of white light. Similarly, the flood lights come in different wattage and also in a traditional flood light bulb. All are priced affordably and none of them require extra hardware.

Setup could be a little easier but we don’t think people will have too much trouble. The accompanying instructions, Novostella website, and Amazon all have resources, too. Along the same lines, the app and instruction book have the occasional spelling error and wonkiness, but nothing here keeps us from recommending them.

Each product comes with a one year warranty but if you register on Novostella’s website, you can pick up an extra six months for free.

Availability

Learn more about Novostella products at its website where they’re available for purchase. You can also head to Amazon where they’re often discounted. As of today, the 2-pack of 20W Smart LED Flood Lights are $89.99, or about $45 each. The 3-pack LED bulbs are $69.99 ($20 off), or about $23 each.

We live in an increasingly connected world. And as such, security is paramount. The more we tie things together, and the more devices we use, the more we should care about protection and vigilance.

As Americans and users around the globe transition into working from home and spending more time online, security grows more important. The last thing you need to deal with is a headache because of a data breach or malware.

0

It’s getting pretty hairy out there as the COVID-19 coronavirus looks to be getting worse in parts of the world, affecting business, travel, sports, and other events.

While we’re stuck at home, only venturing out to get the essentials, we’ve come to rely pretty heavily on online shopping. And when we do shop for items, they’re not always guaranteed to be in stock. Take toilet paper, thermometers, disinfecting wipes, and N95 masks. It’s not easy to find those products.

Online retailer AliExpress has an assortment of face masks, filters, and other health and protective gear. Indeed, the same place that offers a wide range of electronics and not-so-essential gadgets has medical supplies.

Recognizing that hospitals, first responders, and other caregivers need to be equipped before everyday type people, general consumers want peace of mind, too.

If you’re in the market for protective masks, consider the following offer. AliExpress has masks available in quantities of 10, 30, and 50. Prices start as low as $1.99 each.

AT&T Prepaid and Cricket now offering $15 rate plans

0

AT&T on Friday announced that its AT&T Prepaid and Cricket brands will offer new rate plans for customers. Effective immediately, both provide subscribers $15 monthly options which include unlimited talk, text, and 2GB high speed data.

The new plans are available to both current and prospective clients; neither service provider is charging an activation fee for signing up.

It’s worth noting that both carriers are only offering these plans as a temporary measure. T-Mobile’s Connect plan, by contrast, showed up early but expects to stay here for the long term.

Also in response to the ongoing financial downturn, AT&T Prepaid is automatically adding 10GB of high speed data for 60 days to existing customers with capped plans. Those who sign up for a capped plan after April 26 will receive the extra 10GB for 30 days. The new $15 plan is not eligible.

Rounding things out, those with an Unlimited Plus plan with Mobile Hotspot data, and new anyone who signs up for the Unlimited Plus plan prior to April 26 will temporarily get 10GB of extra Mobile Hotspot per month for 60 days. Similarly, new customers who activate after April 26 will get the extra 10GB of data for 30 days.

Cricket is offering pretty much the same to its customers, adding 10GB data to rate plans and/or 10GB of hotspot to plans. It doesn’t spell out the timing, but says it will be added to existing and new customers.

Samsung latest tablet is $280 Galaxy Tab A 8.4 with LTE support

0

Samsung on Wednesday announced its latest Android tablet, the updated 2020 version of its Galaxy Tab A 8.4. Features include LTE support, a generous battery, and mass-market $280 price tag.

Powered by Android 9 Pie (weirdly), it has Samsung’s custom One UI and offers up an 8.4-inch display at 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution. There’s a 5-megapixel camera on the front side of the tablet for selfies and video calls. Around back is an 8-megapixel camera.

With an Exynos 7904 processor and 3GB RAM it should be plenty powerful for most consumer needs. Storage capacity is just 32GB but a microSD card slot allows for up to 512GB external media.

Rounding out the hardware are a 3.5mm headphone jack, dual-speakers with Dolby Atmos, USB Type-C charging port, and a 5,000mAh battery. According to Samsung this is good enough for up to 10 hours of typical usage.

Availability

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.4 has support for LTE, and is sold directly through Samsung’s website. For now it can only be paired with Verizon or sold as a WiFi-only model. Looking ahead, there will be versions for AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular, too.

YouTube Music for Android now displays lyrics to now playing screen

0

YouTube Music is one of the most popular music streaming apps available out there and it has over 20 Million subscribers and millions of songs in multiple languages to stream. The YouTube Music app is available to download for both Android and iOS devices and the app now introduces a new feature that displays song lyrics on the now playing screen whenever you are playing a song from within the app.

You can access the lyrics for the songs it is available by simply tapping on the info icon to the left on the name of the song that is currently playing from the now playing screen. Once you tap on the info icon, there is a new ‘Lyrics’ section in the end apart from the previously existing options like likes and views count, artist and album information. There is also information about where the lyrics were extracted from at the bottom of the lyrics panel.

This new built-in lyrics feature is similar to the one Apple introduced last year to Apple Music in iOS 13 which also displays built-in lyrics to the currently playing song with a live transition to the current line. However, the built-in lyrics feature in the YouTube music app is currently just static and does not advance to the current line as the song plays like the feature in Apple Music. The lyrics section is available under the info screen irrespective of whether the lyrics are available for a particular song or not.

The new built-in lyrics feature is currently only available to the YouTube music Android and iOS apps, however, you might soon expect the feature to make its way to the web app as well. Since the feature has just started to roll out it might take a while before the lyrics are added to the millions of songs in the YouTube Music library. YouTube is said to get updated lyrics for the songs from LyricFind on a daily basis, so you can expect most of the songs to have built-in lyrics soon enough.

Samsung Galaxy S20 sales see flagship getting $200 discount

0

Samsung has dropped the price of its Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ phones by some $200 at a couple of major retailers. With the discount it puts the starting prices of each model at just $800 and $1,000, respectively.

Whether related to the coronavirus or not, the lower price comes quickly. The phones were just released a few weeks back (March 6) so the timing is interesting.

Given the current economic uncertainty, and the fact that people aren’t all too excited to fork over huge chunks of money right now, we can understand why Samsung might drop the price.

It’s not clear how long Samsung will keep this price down. It hasn’t exactly advertised the $200 discount so we’d assume it’s short term.

If you want to take advantage of the major savings, head to Amazon and Best Buy before it ends. Look for the phone in a variety of colors and storage options.

Verizon adds extra 15GB data for consumer and small business plans

0

Verizon is giving its consumers and small business users an extra 15GB of high speed data at no cost. The move, which comes as a direct result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, automatically adds the data with no customer action needed.

Also announced this week, low-income customers on Verizon’s Lifeline program will have their internet and voice service charges waived for two months.

A post on Verizon’s website shares other details as to what the carrier is doing to help combat the struggles facing consumers and small business owners. After already dialing down the number of retail stores open in the US, the remaining locations have adjusted work hours (11AM-4PM), including closing on Sundays.

The new Verizon retail experience looks like this, at least for a few weeks:

  • All Verizon owned and operated stores will be closed on Sundays through April 12.
  • Stores that are open will operate on further reduced hours Monday thru Saturday, 11 AM-4 PM.
  • In order to increase social distancing and allow more employees to take advantage of work from home, we’ve reduced by 50 percent, the number of employees working shifts in our retail locations and we are paying employees for any shifts they may miss due to these scheduling changes.
  • The number of customers in a store may not exceed the number of employees working at any given time in order to promote social distancing.
