Google Pixel Buds learn new tricks in latest update

0

Google’s Pixel Buds are true wireless earbuds that bring serious smarts, including real-time translation when talking to someone in a different language, and they continue to get smarter.

Bass Boost and Attention Alerts

The latest update brings bass boost in the Buds settings. In addition, the Pixel Buds can now detect when you’re sharing with someone so you both get individual volume control.

Another new feature is Attention Alerts, an experimental feature that will temporarily lower the volume when the buds detect a baby crying, a dog barking, or an emergency vehicle siren.

Translate and Transcribe

As mentioned above, one of the Google Pixel Bud’s amazing features is the ability to translate speech in real time. Now, to minimize distractions, the Pixel Buds can transcribe speech so you can focus on the person speaking and can hear the speech when they are done speaking. Right now it’s available for French, German, Italian and Spanish speakers to translate English.

Find my Device and Ask Google Assistant

If you lose or misplace your Pixel Buds, you can now see the last known location in the Find My Device app.

Google Assistant is now more helpful as well. You can ask Google Assistant to turn touch controls on and off as well as check the battery status of your earbuds.

In addition to the new update, Google Pixel Buds are now available in Oh So Orange, Quiet Mint, and Almost Black.

1More Dual Driver ANC Pro Wireless In-Ear Headphones Review

When it comes to headphones with active noise cancellation, you have an assortment of brands and designs to choose from. True wireless buds, such as the Sony WF-1000XM3, offer you a compact convenient way to enjoy your tunes without all the noise. However, they won’t offer you long listening times with the tiny batteries they use.

For longer trips and flights, you’re going to want a substantially larger battery, often in the form of over-the-ear or neckband headphones. Take, for instance, the Dual Driver ANC Pro Wireless Headphones that 1More provided us for review.

Design

Neckband headphones have never been favorite of mine, at lease from a design standpoint, but there is no getting around the insane battery life they offer. 1More’s Dual Driver ANC Pro Wireless Headphones make use of a soft-touch silicone band with metal accent tips on either end.

It is in the metal sections that you’ll find all of the buttons, including ones to control music playback, volume, and controls for noise cancellation. The USB-C charging port is also hidden on the left side under a cap at the end, but that’s not all it is used for.

Included in the box is a USB-C to 3.5mm jack cable that allows you to use these headphones hardwired. This is the first time I’ve seen this option offered outside of over the ear headphones, and I’m a big fan. Just be aware that the headphones must have a charge and you’ll need to power them on, but this also allows you to use ANC with them plugged in.

The earbuds are magnetic, which means they clasp together in the front much like a necklace when not in use. I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for magnets, and love when headphone makers use this gimmick, even when it’s unnecessary — because there is very little danger of these headphones sliding off of your neck.

While most headphone makers use a round ear tip, 1More has chosen to use an oval shape here. Users with smaller ear canals, such as myself, beware. Even using the smallest ear tips in the box, I found them to be too large for my ears.

Comfort

Which leads me to comfort, due to the size of the ear tips, it required me to jam them into my ears with a little more force to prevent them from slipping out. That results in a fit that starts out as slightly uncomfortable but surprisingly remained comfortable for hours of listening.

Overall, the 1More Dual Driver ANC Pro Wireless Headphones weigh more than some other neckband headphones I’ve tried. It’s not exactly heavy, but you might prefer a lighter pair if you’re going to use them while running. Otherwise, the weight is not likely to make much of difference when it comes to comfort.

App

The 1More app provides some basic functions for managing your headphones. One of the most important is updating firmware for the Dual Driver ANC Pro Wireless Headphones. If you purchase a pair, make sure this is one of the first things you check, because there was an update waiting for mine after installing the app.

Besides upgrading firmware, the app allows you to change the strength of the ANC level, displays the battery life, and features a toggle to enable/disable wind noise reduction. Pretty much everything you’ll need, except for the glaring omission of an equalizer to customize the sound to your liking. That’s one improvement I’d love to see 1More make with its app.

Another change I’d appreciate is the option to remove the playback controls in the notification tray. As far as I can tell, it is completely non-functional. Tapping on the buttons in the notification did absolutely nothing when playing music using both Tidal and Spotify. I’m not sure if this works with other headphones 1More makes, but even if it does, the controls are redundant when music apps already provide these by default.

Sound Quality

Audiophiles will be happy to hear that the 1More Dual Driver ANC Pro Wireless Headphones support Hi-Res audio with the LDAC codec. For the uninitiated, when you play music over Bluetooth it is transmitted using a codec. Some of the most popular codecs are AAC, SBC, aptX, and aptX HD. You may have heard of some of these before, and all you need to know is, the higher the bitrate the higher the quality of the audio.

In the case of the Dual Driver ANC Pro Headphones from 1More, by using LDAC they offer bit rates up to 960kbit/s. In comparison, SBC offers 345kbit/s and aptX HD tops out at 576kbit/s.

As you can see, the Dual Driver ANC Pro Wireless Headphones have a huge advantage here by using the LDAC codec, and I was very impressed by the sound quality. The highs were bright and crisp giving vocals amazing clarity, while still remaining balanced with a nice low-end for bass with real impact.

Perhaps it is the tuning or the use of the LDAC codec, but I was blown away by the amount of detail and definition while listening to tracks. No matter what I listened to, everything came in so crystal clear and balanced that I was able to pick up on sounds more clearly than with other earbuds I’ve tried.

ANC

The 1More Dual Driver ANC Pro Wireless Headphones offer two different levels of active noise cancellation, which can either be controlled with the physical buttons or within the app. I tested this out in a couple of different scenarios and came away rather impressed with the results.

The first level is enough to help block out sounds like the air conditioner running, while the second level will help with louder annoyances, such as airplane noise with the volume at 40 to 50 percent. I even found it helpful with reducing the noise from the lawnmower, although it won’t completely silence random noises, it does wonders for repetitive ambient noise.

Battery Life

The battery life on the 1More Dual Driver ANC Pro Headphones will vary greatly depending on a couple of different factors. The first being, which audio codec you are using during playback, and the second being, whether you have ANC on or not.

For example, if you’re using LDAC you can expect 8 hours maximum according to 1More. If you use one of the lower bitrate codecs, then you can stretch the battery life up to 20 hours. However, once you turn on ANC, those numbers begin to drop. Thankfully, 1More has this handy chart from their website that will help you make sense of it all.

Overall, I used the Dual Driver ANC Pro Wireless Headphones with LDAC and ANC off the majority of the time. That got me plenty of hours of music during the week and didn’t require excessive charging.

Final Thoughts

These days true wireless buds are all the rage, every day more and more are beginning to add ANC. However, sometimes you need more battery life than those tiny buds can provide.

If you’re looking for a pair of active noise-canceling headphones with a long-lasting battery, that won’t take up as much space as over the ear models, the 1More Dual Driver ANC Headphones are a fantastic choice.

They come in a $150, which is more than reasonable considering the wonderfully balanced sound quality and noise cancelation they provide.

SEO and SEM: Tech features and specs

0

EDITOR NOTE: This is a promoted post and should not be viewed as an editorial endorsement.

Search engines have two types of search results: paid (PPC) and regular (SEO). Paid results appear when companies pay search engines for their presence in search result pages. In contrast, organic results are those considered by search engines the most relevant to a given query. Obviously, business owners can increase website traffic by doing both SEO and PPC. In this article, we want to explore how and when to use SEO, PPC, and how to combine the two for a more advanced search engine marketing (SEM) strategy.

SEO — Specs, Features, Tasks

So what is special about SEO? What SEM vs SEO information you should know? The essence of Search Engine Optimization is optimizing content so that the site could be easily found through regular search results. The widespread majority of search engines take into account hundreds of factors to decide which pages to rank for particular queries. Nobody knows what all these factors are, but the most important ones are divided into three groups:

  1. Technical optimization is the practice of optimizing individual web pages (key selling pages, landing pages, or the website as a whole). Technical SEO implies the introduction of technical changes to help search engine performance, index, and evaluate content more efficiently. At this point, it is crucial to ensure compliance of the site with the current requirements of search engines and improve page loading speed. To prevent duplicate content or any issues associated with plagiarism, you should also consider using canonical tags, optimizing robots.txt, and switching on the “Noindex” function for technical or unimportant pages.
  2. On-site optimization addresses content marketing. Here is what you have to do to make your site perform even better. First, you should match the text with the search intent and produce easy-to-read and straightforward content with tempting headlines and meta tags. Since search engines are very focused on KW’s and their density, do not forget to use the most frequent keywords in the copy and alt texts for all media assets on the page.
  3. Off-site optimization comes with the introduction of backlinks on external platforms and all types of online resources, be it a blog, forum, news outlet, etc. What’s important here is that you have a concrete strategy and stick to it. A sharp increase in the link profile of a website or improper link placement can cause problems. Therefore, you should always know what sites to post a backlink on and how many backlinks to post every week/month/quarter.

If you want your site to have stable and high traffic, then you need to check direct Google Analytics and perform complex search engine optimization.

SEM — Specs, Features, Tasks

In short, SEM is a set of measures aimed at improving the site’s position in search engines through paid advertising. In the Google search engine, advertisers bid on keywords that users may enter when searching for specific products or services. It allows a site owner to show their ads along with the results of the organic search for these search queries.

Using SEM in your marketing campaign is a quick way to drive traffic to your site and upscale your search engine rankings in the long run. The most popular paid search engine SEM is Google Ads. The main tasks that SEM solves:

  • Attracting potential buyers who are interested in your product;
  • Increasing the percentage of sales;
  • Raising brand/company recognition and popularity;
  • Improving company reputation.

Professional marketers agree that the ideal SEM formula includes two mandatory components: search engine optimization (SEO) and contextual advertising (SEA). Another essential element of search marketing is VSM (Video Search Marketing); it is a contextual video ad used on video hosting. All the above approaches will help you get traffic from different channels of communication and will boost your brand recognition.

What Is the Main Difference Between SEO and SEM?

Compared to SEO, SEM has some significant differences. Using SEM, a company pays Google for traffic and clicks. In contrast, search engine optimization SEO gets high search engine rankings for free with the most relevant digital copy for keyword searches. SEO optimization increases the chances that when searching for the right query, a potential customer will see your site in a search engine. On the contrary, SEM works with consciously formed requests. In this case, the website will gather ready-to-buy customers.

Each method of promotion (SEM or SEO) has its own characteristics. Search engine optimization is relevant for any field of activity, but keep in mind that it can take a long time to get the first profit. However, the first positions won in the search engine rankings give long-term results for little money. On the other hand, SEM gives the first sales results from the first day of advertising. It is crucial to keep in mind that not all products can be advertised. So check with the brand team before you start running any online paid campaigns.

What Does It Mean for Your Business?

For the most effective development of your business with the help of an online marketing strategy, it is vital to apply a combination of both SEM and SEO. But in addition to such methods of promoting web resources, we recommend using the SMO approach, which is more aimed at keeping the user on the site. SMO, also known as Social Media Optimization, is one of the modern methods of site promotion by optimizing the resource for social networks. SMO means the optimization of the website and its content in such a format as to encourage numerous users to use and share links to the site through social networks. It will also sharply increase traffic to your online resource.

How to change the Bluetooth audio codec in Android 10

0

When it comes to getting the best audio quality out of your phone, it depends on several factors. Three of the most important include quality of the source material, audio processor in your phone, and the headphones or speaker you use. However, when Bluetooth is used another important factor is introduced, and that’s the wireless audio codec.

There are several wireless audio codes to choose from, with some of the most popular being AAC, SBC, LDAC, aptX, and aptX HD. With the release of Android 8.0 Oreo, Google added support for all of these, and more. In other words, it meant that regardless of which codec is used, it comes down to which one your headphones or speaker supports.

Most headphones support more than one codec with AAC and aptX being the two most popular. For those who may be wondering at this point, aptX HD and LDAC are generally considered two of the highest quality wireless audio codecs.

By default, your phone should choose the highest quality codec your headphones or speaker supports. However, there is a way to view which codec is in use, and even a way to change it manually. Keep reading to find out how.

1. Connect your Bluetooth headphones to your phone.
2. Swipe down the notification shade.
3. Long press on the Bluetooth quick tile.
4. Click on the settings cog next to your Bluetooth headphones.
5. Tap the item at the top of the list, mine shown below is “HD audio: LDAC” but yours will depend on the device you have connected.
6. Choose which codec you’d like to use and press OK.

In my example, I used the 1More Dual Driver ANC Pro Headphones. You’ll see that by default it uses the LDAC codec, which is one of the highest quality wireless audio codecs available.

You may be wondering, why would you want to change the codec? Good question, there are two very important reasons. The first being that LDAC uses much more battery power;  by switching to another codec you can extend the battery life. From time to time it may happen that battery life is more important to you than audio quality.

The second reason would be that other lower bit rate codecs can offer a more stable Bluetooth connection, allowing you to experiences fewer drop outs at greater distances.

Crash Bandicoot On the Run! pre-registration available

0

Crash Bandicoot On The Run isn’t your run of the mill endless runner. At least that’s how things look in the early images and videos. The game looks like a good stage based running game that has the same charm and charisma of its console source material.

Crash Bandicoot On The Run – Coming soon to mobile

Crash Bandicoot was once the PlayStation 1 Mascot and was not able to hold his status as future PlayStation consoles released. However, in recent years, the HD remakes of the Crash Bandicoot PS1 trilogy and Crash Nitro Racing, also for the PS1, have brought Crash back into the spotlight.

With a brand new entry releasing on October 2nd for the PS4 and Xbox One, by the name of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, Crash Bandicoot On The Run could be the buffer you need when on the move.

Initially known as Crash Bandicoot mobile and appearing earlier this year, the game looks a stage based runner.

The first game released to a very limited audience and didn’t have much of a Google PlayStore roll out.

With Crash Bandicoot On The Run, we are now amidst the global release of the game, with pre-registration starting today.

The trailer shows a very polished and fun game that could potentially give games like Subway Surfers a run for their money.

You can pre-register the game right now by clicking here.

If you pre-register for the game, you also get a limited edition Blue Hyena skin for Crash.

With gameplay similar to that of Minion Rush: Despicable Me, this game definitely looks like it has a lot of promise.

The game will be published by King, the creators of Candy Crush, and all other games in the series. You should brace for micro-transactions or other hidden purchases.

While a release date for the game hasn’t been shared yet, we can hopefully expect the game to drop before Crash Bandicoot 4 in October 2020.

Protecting data on mobile devices: Advice on how to prevent breaches

0

EDITOR NOTE: This is a promoted post and should not be viewed as an editorial endorsement.

One of the biggest hurdles that companies face when seeking to transform digitally involves data protection. A 2018 IMB-sponsored study showed that the average cost to a business from a single data breach is $3.86 million, a not-insubstantial figure for most businesses.

Look at it this way. If you had a shop, and every time someone went into your shop, they got ripped off, would you blame them if they didn’t come back?

That’s what happens in the digital marketplace when customers think you don’t take data privacy and security seriously. While collecting customer data is important for understanding how customers interact within your business, it’s equally important to keep their data – and other business-related data – safe from hackers and others with nefarious intent.

BYOD & Digital Transformation

One often-overlooked cause of breaches involves employees who bring their devices to work. While many organizations globally have adopted the practice of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) to help support digital transformation goals, often both employers and employees don’t understand how this can affect security.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a personal smartphone, laptop, or tablet. Any of these can be utilized to gain access to a company’s digital network and cause enormous damage.

Personal devices usually have less security than centrally managed business devices, so it’s important to drive this point home. Informing employees and management about ways to prevent data breaches will help keep your network, and your business, safe from viruses, malware, and cyber attacks.

Here are some ways to help limit the chance of a security breach:

  • Decide who needs what data, and limit access to employees who need it.
  • Develop stringent authentication protocols to allow access, especially for applications critical to your business.
  • Devote resources to a mobile device management (MDM) system so that you can enforce your data protection policy and monitor access to data.
  • Ensure devices are secured before they’re granted access to your systems.
  • Ensure you’ve got an anti-virus program specifically designed for mobile devices and their operating systems.
  • Evaluate your current system regarding data accessibility for risks, then take action to mitigate damage from potential breaches.
  • Require electronic signatures to access data, which not only protects systems but improves workflows, allowing you to reduce operating costs and increase efficiency.
  • Use data encryption and data protections specific to your industry, including remote data wiping, PIN code access, and freezing access after so many failed log-in attempts.

BYOD may reduce IT costs and enhance operational flexibility, but businesses should also consider the cybersecurity threats it can enables. It’s no longer the system you’re defending, but the data itself.

Controlling Data Access

Controlling who can access data within your organization will go a long way towards protecting it. Business owners should ensure anyone with data access takes security measures to protect the data they’re accessing.

Determine how much access each employee needs. Does that new sales rep really need sensitive data regarding trade secrets, personal information of all your customers, and the data collected from business operations?

Creating levels that allow employees at certain levels to gain access makes sense. It’s the same idea as security clearances in the military. Protecting data and controlling access will increase customers’ confidence in your business. It’s a matter of prudence to limit access only to those personnel who need it.

Android-Specific Security

A Reuters article from 2019 explained why Google shut down a service it provided to wireless carriers that exposed weak spots in their network coverage. It didn’t want users or regulators scrutinizing this sharing of data.

This disappointed wireless carriers, who use the data when considering upgrades or extensions to their coverage. Even though the data is anonymous and sharing such has become an ordinary practice, the move shows how concerned Google is about even appearing lax with the privacy of and security for customers’ data.

Yet even many Android aficionados suspect Google’s commitments to privacy, so it’s understandable why they’re doing this. Past these obvious privacy concerns comes the very real damage security breaches can do. It’s important that employers ensure their employees keep both customer data and their systems safe.

Here are a few hacks Android users can use to increase both privacy and security on their devices:

  • Don’t trust unknown sources: Software from an unknown source could be malware, contain virus, or include security flaws in its coding. It’s best to disable software from unknown sources, which you can do by going to Settings > Security > Unknown Sources, and then making sure the box isn’t checked.
  • Encrypting devices: This is the best way to keep data private, and is easily done from the “security” menu in Android,
  • Keep software up-to-date: Often vulnerabilities occur just because updates haven’t been downloaded. To update software apps on an Android, go to Settings > About Phone > System Update.
  • Use a PIN: A PIN allows you sole control over who has access to your data. When used in conjunction with other locking measures – such as fingerprint or facial recognition – it can help prevent data from being sent on to Google through occasional automatic transmissions.

Regardless of what devices your employees might be using, anyone with access to sensitive data should understand the gravity of the problem should their device be the one through which a hacker gains access. Protecting your company’s reputation includes protecting your customers.

Samsung commits to three major Android updates for select models

0

Samsung this week committed to providing three major Android updates for select handset lines. As one might expect it includes major series such as the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note devices.

In the past Samsung had promised, and held a pretty solid track record, of delivering two major Android updates for its phones. It varied from model to model, though, and some received three.

“As people hold onto their devices for longer, we are working to bring secure protection and exciting new features to the devices already in their hands. By supporting up to three generations of Android OS upgrade, we are extending the lifecycle of our Galaxy products and making a promise that we will provide a simple and secure mobile experience that takes advantage of the latest innovations as soon as they are available.”

Here are the models that Samsung pledges three generations of updates to:

  • Galaxy S series: Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, S20 Ultra, S20+ 5G, S20+, S20 5G, S20 in addition to S10 5G, S10+, S10, S10e, S10 Lite and future S series devices
  • Galaxy Note series: Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, Note20 Ultra, Note20 5G, Note20, Note10+ 5G, Note10+, Note10 5G, Note10, Note10 Lite and future Note series devices
  • Galaxy Foldable devices: Galaxy Z Fold2 5G, Z Fold2, Z Flip 5G, Z Flip, Fold 5G, Fold and future Z series devices
  • Galaxy A series: Galaxy A71 5G, A71, A51 5G, A51, A90 5G and select future A series devices
  • Tablets: Galaxy Tab S7+ 5G, Tab S7+, Tab S7 5G3, Tab S7, Tab S6 5G4, Tab S6, Tab S6 Lite and future Tab S series devices

Worth pointing out, Samsung doesn’t make any sort of commitment in terms of timeline for updates. That said, it has been fairly good about pushing things out rather quickly.

Its latest flagship devices, the Samsung Galaxy S20, is expected to receive its Android 11 update later this year. With only four months left, and the fact that Android 11 hasn’t been officially announced, that’s pretty impressive.

A 5G BlackBerry is coming in 2021

0

In what might be one of the more surprising bits of mobile-related news to surface in this wonky year that is 2020, we’ve learned that BlackBerry is back.

According to a recent press announcement, the BlackBerry brand will resurface in the first half of 2021 with a 5G-capable handset. As one might expect, the phone is expected to have a physical keyboard.

“Enterprise professionals are eager for secure 5G devices that enable productivity, without sacrificing the user experience,” said Peter Franklin, CEO of OnwardMobility. “BlackBerry smartphones are known for protecting communications, privacy, and data. This is an incredible opportunity for OnwardMobility to bring next-generation 5G devices to market with the backing of BlackBerry and FIH Mobile.”

The new phone will come from OnwardMobility, a company who has licensed the brand. OnwardMobility will handle the planet and market development while FIH Mobile, a subsidiary of Foxconn, will design and manufacture the device.

The last company produce BlackBerry-branded handsets was TCL, who launched a handful of Android-powered models from 2016 to 2018.

0

EDITOR NOTE: This is a promoted post and should not be viewed as an editorial endorsement.

COVID-19 has taken the world by surprise. Ever since its outbreak, people have been relying more and more on the internet to stay connected to their family and work. According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, around 53% of the Americans agreed to the fact that the internet has been an essential utility for them amid the pandemic.

Since there is no cure available for this pandemic yet, people are advised to remain indoors with minimum human interaction and the outside world. In these difficult times, many service providers like Charter Spectrum have taken the initiative to help their customers by offering them free internet along with various other facilities.

How is Charter Spectrum helping its customers in this pandemic?

Offering Free Internet

The well-being of its customers is Spectrum’s topmost priority, which is why the provider abides by all the rules and regulations set by the Center for Disease Control. All the technicians are required to follow the safety protocols by wearing personal protective equipment when interacting with the customers directly. In addition to this, Spectrum representatives regularly disinfect their equipment and maintain social distance when meeting with a client. Moreover, the employees are requested to conduct a proper self-assessment of their health in order to confirm that they do not have any symptoms like flu or cold. Charter Spectrum has also modified its procedures to ensure that technicians spend a minimum amount of time at your home or business for installation and service work.

Community Assistance

To serve the customers in the best possible way, Spectrum will continue to offer Internet Assist, which is a high-speed broadband network designed especially for low-income households. The company has also allowed free access to Wi-Fi hotspots, which are available throughout the nation.
