Blu G90 Pro review

0

What do you think of when it comes to the topic of gaming on a phone? For many of us that means casual gaming, occasionally getting into 3D titles, flashy graphics, and online competition.

A growing number of people are starting to have a different definition of mobile gaming. In fact, the last few years have given way to a whole new segment of hardware: phones designed around gaming.

These types of phones are often cutting-edge hardware, feature extra buttons, and custom software settings. They usually have incredibly high refresh rates for the screens, massive batteries, and even cooling systems.

Miami-based smartphone maker Blu largely plays in the entry-level and mid-range phone sandbox, occasionally stepping out to produce a flagship-like model.

Blu’s latest handset is the G90 Pro, which it touts as its first “gaming phone”. Available immediately, it’s a $250 handset that launches with an introductory discount. As it does with many of its other models, Blu has knocked $50 off the phone for a limited time. That’s right, just $200.

What is the Blu G90 Pro?

I’ll get right to the point. The more time I spent with the G90 Pro the less I thought about it as a gaming phone. That’s largely, but not entirely, because I am not the target gamer.

Looking at the device from a hardware standpoint, the phone resembles other Blu models in its portfolio. It’s sleek, shiny, and sophisticated looking, but there’s nothing on the surface that signals a gaming-centric experience.

Offered in “Purple Haze”, the G90 Pro is a modern looking device that has the appearance of a more expensive handset. And just like everything else in its roster, it’s unlocked and compatible with GSM carriers. In other words, T-Mobile, AT&T, and any of their respective brands can support the phone.

As to where the G90 Pro fits in line with its other models, we’ll want to back up a bit. See, there’s an entry-level G9 which launched last summer with a price tag of around $180. A few months later Blu offered up the G9 Pro, a beefier and sexier take that topped out at $250.

For 2020 it seems to be following a similar path; the G90 ($150) arrived in June with a refreshed entry-level experience. And that brings us to today with the arrival of the G90 Pro.

If you view the phone through the same lens as last year, the G90 Pro makes sense. It’s easy to understand what it represents and where it fits. But, we have to apply a different lens: gaming.

Design and Hardware

Let’s take a look at the hardware and overall design of the Blu G90 Pro. There’s quite a bit packed into this phone, especially for the price.

Powered by a stock version of Android 10, the handset has a generous 6.5-inch (1080 x 2340) display and quad-core camera setup.

Down the spine of the phone is the camera array which is comprised of an 8-megapixel wide-angle (118-degree) camera, 48-megapixel main camera, and 2-megapixel depth sensor. Just to the side are the flash and a 2-megapixel macro camera.

A quad-core processor is paired with 4GB RAM with storage capacity at 128GB. A microSD expansion card slot allows for another 128GB of media, files, music, and data.

The 5,100mAh battery is larger than what’s found in most of today’s phones, even at the upper tier. Topping off the power source is done via USB type-C 18W quick charging and /or 10W wireless charging.

Rounding out specifications we have Bluetooth 4.1, a rear fingerprint sensor, facial recognition, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Design-wise, the G90 Pro has your standard layout with power and volume buttons located on the right edge. The left side is where you’ll find the microSD/SIM card slot. The bottom has the USB Type-C port, speaker, and headphone jack.

The phone is heavy and slippery, to be sure. We can thank the large screen and batteries for that. As beautiful as the purple is, it likes to attract fingerprints and smudges.

Software

The Blu G90 Pro leaves Android the way Google intended it to be enjoyed, adding just a few extras here and there. Nothing that impacts the UI or slows any potential software update, mind you.

I like when phone makers do this, and I’m glad to see more companies adopting the mentality. Blu has done this for years and seems to have found the right blend of additional features.

Present are features like dark theme, color modes, configurable gestures, and choice of navigation bar settings. Digging into things, you can really adjust the experience to your liking.

While it doesn’t look like there are any additional apps or games installed out of the box, a few things show up once connected to Wi-Fi. Candy Crush Saga, Coin Master, Pandora, TikTok, and VivaLive TV were among those that installed on ours. For what it’s worth, they can be uninstalled.

Interestingly, there are no settings present for tuning the phone. It surprised me to find there were no adjustments to adjust color gamut, refresh rates, automatic do-not-disturb, or battery optimization. These are often found in higher-end phones, and especially those with gaming at their core.

Performance

So, how does the Blu G90 Pro handle gaming? Not too shabby, considering the hardware. Let’s be honest here; this phone doesn’t have near the specifications that other “gaming” handsets include.

Whereas something like the ASUS ROG Phone II has up to 12GB RAM, this one has 4GB RAM. Similarly, there are big differences in the display refresh rate, storage capacity and type, and processor type.

In all fairness to the processor, the MediaTek Helio G90T is designed and tuned for gaming and there is “Liquid Cool Technology” at play here.

Other gaming-based phones tend to push the boundary with bleeding-edge technology like UFS so I had hoped that would be what Blu did for its G90 Pro. Well, as long as they were going to call it a “gaming” phone.

I loaded up Asphalt 9, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and NBA 2K20 to see how things went. Each played as expected with no noticeable lag or stuttering. To be clear, I didn’t run any benchmarks for frame dropping.

I’m more of a Pokemon Go, Monument Valley, Blendoku, and solitaire kind of mobile gamer. Save for Pokemon Go, I like to play a few minutes here and there and often leave games unattended for days or weeks at a time. I had zero issues with any of the games I normally play on a phone.

Hopping from one game to another, or pausing for a bit to manage emails and tasks, I found the G90 Pro to move smoothly along. I’ve lived with the Pixel 3a as my main phone for more than a year now. In other words I don’t need, let alone want, much from a phone.

This is not to suggest I don’t have experience with much more powerful phones. Today I carry a OnePlus 8 Pro with me everywhere I go, and often spend evenings with that one. I love using it for a few games and video.

I’ve really come to appreciate a higher refresh rate even though I don’t use it all that much. Things are buttery smooth and move so much clearer when your screen is refreshing at 90Hz or 120Hz.

As I see it, those who buy devices based on benchmarks and performance tests already have their eye set on particular products. They do their research, compare apples to apples, and often base their purchasing decisions more on what the product does as opposed to what it costs.

The G90 Pro doesn’t have anything special in way of the refresh rate. There is one speaker on the bottom so sound isn’t stereo or exceedingly loud. And unlike the ROG Phone II and its side-mounted USB-C port, this one’s on the bottom. Playing games sometimes results in covering the sound or an awkward experience with headphones plugged in.

Thankfully, the G90 Pro comes with a protective rubber case, and not just the same thin TPU one that comes with other Blu devices. Here we get one that’s more rough and tumble, with an ergonomic design on the rear. It lends itself to a more natural handheld experience and its cutouts help keep your phone cooler when long gaming sessions take place.

Interestingly, the camera experience is quite well-rounded and better than expected. I say this not only from what I found in actual usage, but in the fact that there are so many cameras present to begin with.

Do gamers care that much about taking photos? I submit that they likely don’t. Nevertheless, I think casual users will enjoy what’s offered up here.

Bolstering the ample camera options is an intuitive and robust software experience. It’s easy to hop between the different perspectives, make adjustments, and play with filters. You’ve got 4K video recording, live filters, slow motion, wide angle, macro, panoramic, and other settings to toggle.

Other Thoughts

I don’t know that I’ve properly conveyed my sentiment regarding this phone and its place among gaming devices. Had Blu not introduced it as “its first gaming phone” I would have had a different perspective of the G90 Pro.

Once that topic was injected into the conversation things changed. Now we’re not talking about how it fares as a regular phone but more of a specialized one. And given there are not too many devices on the market with that as their angle, it stands to reason that comparisons need to be made.

As indicated earlier, I’m not a heavy gamer when it comes to my mobile lifestyle. That doesn’t mean, however, that I am not aware of what a gaming phone offers. I went in looking for certain things and came away disappointed.

I feel like I am being overly critical of the phone itself. I’m trying not to be. Had this been introduced as simply a Pro version of this summer’s G90 I would have been far more impressed.

I’ve always had the opinion that Blu’s phones are perfectly serviceable and worth their money — at the very least. It offers great value propositions and any flaws or shortcomings are often overlooked, if not forgiven. And really, it’s not until you compare Blu phones with more pricey competitors that you see what corners may have been cut or concessions made. I stand by every bit of that here.

On its own, the G90 Pro is fantastic and even fares well when compared to others. But add that one topic to the mix and suddenly it doesn’t belong in that conversation.

Conclusion

I really dig this phone for $250, and simply love it at just $200. If you can get in on the limited-time discount, I suggest doing so. It’s a great update over last year’s model and provides the right balance of features to keep most folks happy for a few years.

There’s enough price disparity here before we start comparing the G90 Pro to something like the Pixel 4a. It’s more closely aligned with the likes of Motorola’s 8th-gen G series or the Samsung Galaxy A31.

It’s in an interesting spot where you don’t start comparing it to bigger names, and at the same time, you don’t turn your nose at it for being too basic.

There’s a lot to appreciate here, but I just wouldn’t lead the conversation with gaming. And even though there is a huge segment of buyers just like me, true gamers are a different breed. As such, they’ll take one look at the spec sheet here and move on.

If you saw this phone displayed at Best Buy, or came across it on Amazon, you’d find it outwardly attractive with a pandemic-friendly (read: affordable) price. Unlocked and ready for GSM carriers, it’s a solid handset with more than enough power for most users. If your definition of mobile gaming resembles mine, you’ll be sufficiently impressed.

Availability

You can purchase the Blu G90 Pro for $250 at Amazon where it’s available in Purple Haze. An introductory launch price sees the phone going for just $200 for a limited time.

Vessel Bags Signature 2.0 backpack review

I have a ton of differing interests, but one of my obsessions is backpacks. While I appreciate all types and designs, I tend to side more on the “tech backpack” side of things. I love pockets. Being able to organize everything in my bag so I can just go to a certain pocket for what I need is fantastic.

Up until recently I haven’t cared much what the bag actually looks like just so long as it worked. One bag that helped change my stance on looks was the Boundary Supply Errant pack. I think the thing that got me was it just looked different than just about anything else out there.

That brings me to the Vessel Bags Signature 2.0 backpack. Our team was provided a review unit and I was only too happy to check it out.

For the sake of discussion, the one I received is the black pebbled version which looks strikingly similar to leather. It’s not, but at first glance no one would know. It’s super soft and just feels nice.

Walkaround

The outer front pocket is easily accessible and has room for the things you would need to grab quickly such as pens/pencils, small hard drives, and/or a small notebook.

Opening the main compartment is where the majority of your space comes from. I can easily fit my Nintendo Switch, over-ear headphones, and some other random stuff. If push came to shove I could probably squeeze a small hoodie in there, too.

While this bag hasn’t had any problems keeping the things I need in it, it’s a small backpack. I’m about Kevin Hart size (5’4”) and the bottom of the bag comes to about my waistline. So it is a fairly small pack.

Best bags and backpacks for carrying your gear this spring

There are a couple mesh type pockets to help keep the smaller things organized too. The real gem of this part of the interior is the zippered pocket inside. It’s lined with a super soft velour-like fabric. If you have a small electronic device or something with a display that you don’t want to get scratched, this is the pocket you want to use.

Just behind that is another pocket that only zips open a bit. This is where you would put your laptop and tablet if you have such things. There are also mesh pockets in here that work great for a mouse and maybe a portable charger.

The laptop sleeve is also lined with that soft velvet like material. It’s listed as being big enough for a 16″ MacBook. I tried stuffing my 15” Lenovo Y740 in there and it wasn’t quite big enough, so unless you have a laptop on the thinner side, I wouldn’t suggest this bag. If you’re more mobile and carry smaller items, this would be great for say an iPad Pro and one of those thin and light wireless keyboards.

Around the back the straps are nicely padded and comfortable. The back of the bag has ventilation designed to keep you from sweating or getting hot. To be clear, I haven’t taken this out for super long periods, but it did the job in smaller outings.

On the right strap there is a little slash/loop that has ‘VESSEL’ on it, I’m assuming that’s for your sunglasses. That’s what I used it for anyway.

There’s two small pockets on the back that are for flat things, such as maybe a wallet and passport.

On the bottom there is a cut out if you want to slide the handle of your carry-on through. Sometimes it’s easier to pull or wheel your items around, right?

On the bottom of the Vessel Bags Signature 2.0 you’ll find one more zipper. Technically this is supposed to be for shoes, and if you’re travelling that probably would be a great place to put them. I will say I stuffed my size 10 running shoes in there and it was a fairly tight fit.

More generally I keep my little tech travel pouch in this pocket. You know, that little bag you have that houses all your random cords, dongles, and maybe a small battery bank? That lived in this pocket for me.

One thing I will note: whatever you decide to put in this bottom pocket, it will take room from the main compartment, so just keep that in mind.

Things I like

  • It’s soft
  • Main pocket is roomy
  • Soft interior pocket is nice for smaller electronics
  • Always nice having a luggage pass through
  • Comfy on the back
  • Small profile

Things I don’t like

  • Laptop sleeve is small(ish)
  • No external water bottle pocket
  • Front most pocket can be a tad hard to get into

Final thoughts

Overall, this is a really nice bag. There are some things that I would like to see changed in future versions, but nothing too drastic. I will say this though, it looks fantastic.

If you’re looking for a backpack that you can take to a board meeting as easily as the coffee shop, this is definitely one you should look at.

Availability

You can learn more about the backpack and other options at the Vessel Bags website. The Signature 2.0 is offered in some 11 different colors with pricing that starts at $235. For an additional $65 you can have the bag embroidered with a logo.

If you’re a heavy traveler, you may want to go for the 2.0 Plus backpack which gives you a lay flat opening, and a little more space at 27 liters. This might make your trip through security a bit easier. Available for $265, it comes in three colors.

Cheap phone plans that use the T-Mobile network

0

T-Mobile is one of the most popular wireless service provider in the United States, but it’s not the company to use its towers. Indeed, many brands and services pay for access to its network.

Each of these mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) offers their own rate plans, phone selection, billing, and customer service. These companies simply rely on T-Mobile for cellular coverage.

We’ve gathered up some of the cheapest rate plans you can find for the various carriers that use T-Mobile’s network. This isn’t every option available, but rather a list of the ones we like best. Many of the carriers who use T-Mobile allow for Bring Your Own Device meaning you can keep the phone you have.

Anker announces eufy Security Smart Drop, a secure deposit box for packages

0

E-commerce is an almost natural, if not regular, occurrence for many of us. From Amazon to food delivery, we expect a new level of self-sufficiency from online shopping. In this door-to-door age of retail we also open the door to security lapses for those items that sit unattended on our stoops.

Anker’s sub-brand eufy hopes to help alleviate those concerns with a new Kickstarter for a connected dropbox they call Smart Drop. This digital lockbox is an innovative way to make sure no one walks off with your goods while you are at work or just unable to come to the door.

Lock it down while keeping you in the loop

Eufy has accomplished this with a combination of a motion-activated security camera and essentially a steel cage with a smart lock. The Smart Drop comes equipped with a full 1080p camera with motion sensors and 160-degree viewing angles. There’s also a night vision lens for when deliveries happen after dark.

On par with other offerings, the Smart Drop will give you delivery notifications when someone activates the sensors. It will also start to record. These recordings can be stored locally when paired with eufy’s HomeBase or in the cloud on your account.

You’ll also want to make sure the box itself is well guarded and eufy thought about this as well. The Smart Drop is cold-rolled carbon steel which should take a beating from the elements or a breach attempt. There’s an anchoring system to bolt the Smart Drop to either the floor or wall of your porch.

Smart Drop is weatherproof with a full IP65 rating and has an internal drainage system to allow any water that makes it in while a package is being dropped an escape route. Speaking of the inside, you have 68L (25.6″x17.7″x15″) of storage space. While this won’t allow a BowFlex to be stowed away, it should fit a couple of the most common box sizes.

AI and a little help

And you can’t have a security device without voice integration these days and the eufy Smart Drop supports both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. That AI mentality isn’t just for the end-user though. eufy has built-in a “courier guidance” feature that uses audio prompts and lights to help make sure the delivery guy gets your package secured correctly.

Atop the AI and remote entry options, you have a dedicated keypad, physical key, or one-button push to give access to the Smart Drop. This will give you options of temporary unlock with single-button or PIN code to your carrier on the day of delivery. And you always want the fail-proof keyed method just in case.

The unit is powered by a removable and rechargeable battery bank. eufy is claiming this will last three months between charges, but without some hands-on time, we can’t verify.

What’s it gonna cost me?

Eufy will be available for pre-order on August 25 via Kickstarter. The early bird pricing will be $199 with an estimated ship date of the third quarter in 2021. As with most crowd-funding, it takes time to get the train going to production and you always run the risk this never makes it to market.

What do you think? Is the eufy Smart Drop something you’re willing to invest in? Let us know in the comments! If you need more details you can also check out the eufy website.

Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight review

Outfitting a home or office with a security system in 2020 is completely different from how things were just a decade ago. Rather than having a professional company come in to install things, you can go about it yourself. Even better, you can scale it as your needs change.

While one person may set up a full system around the perimeter of their home, another will put just two cameras in rooms with important items. Similarly, whereas someone wants to have eyes on the front yard and driveway, another might have to put cameras in each garage stall.

We recently received an Arlo Pro 3 bundle (read our review) which included a pair of 2k cameras and a smart hub. Suffice it to say, it was an easy installation which takes very little time and configuration. If you’ve never set up something from Arlo, or are considering it, know that you don’t need any sort of expertise. It’s designed for the layman.

Our team was fortunate enough to check out another entrant in the Arlo portfolio, the Pro 3 Floodlight. Introduced at CES 2020, it’s exactly what you think it is: an Arlo camera with an ultra-bright light.

What is the Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight?

Priced $249, it’s not all that different from the Arlo Pro 3 in the area of specifications. Key features include 2k (2560×1440) camera, 160 degree field of view, 12X zoom, and a rechargeable battery. It’s equipped for indoor and outdoor settings and can handle temperatures of -20 to 45 celsius.

The main difference between the Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight is that it has these sizable lights flanking the sides of the camera. And boy are they bright.

Setup

I already had the Arlo hub in place so adding the camera was a breeze. It’s literally a few moments of your time. In short, you’ll open the app and have your hub search for it. Once it finds the camera, you name it and can immediately set up any sort of schedule or activity zones.

I appreciate that you don’t necessarily need the SmartHub in order to set up or use the Pro 3 Floodlight. It’s better if you do, but not required. More on that in a moment.

Physical installation is really no different from the standard Arlo Pro 3 in that you screw in the mount with three screws, then it’s a matter of twisting things into place.

Interestingly enough, the Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight comes with a microUSB charging port and cable instead of the magnetic charger that the Pro 3 does. It does, however, still support that means of charging. I prefer this method because I can charge without taking the camera down.

Usage

The camera has been in place for about two weeks now and seems to be sipping at the battery in the same way the other Arlo cameras do. Mileage will vary depending on what modes you have enabled. That is, if you want it to be on constant guard with every little motion or sound to trigger, it will be more aggressive on battery.

Setting activity zones and adjusting the field of view is something I’d recommend if you’d like to extend battery life, too. That way you’re not getting unwanted notifications and recordings. The app makes it very easy to do this, and more. Similar to the Arlo Pro 3, the floodlight has a 3-month Arlo Smart trial included with it.

Although you can install and use the Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight without a SmartHub, you may wish to pick one up. As indicated earlier, that was already in place with our setup. As to what is different when using the hub or base station, it gives you access to these additional features:

  • 2K local streaming and 2K local recording
  • Auto Zoom and Tracking
  • CVR (with a subscription)

There are other features that I like about Arlo’s cameras, including two-way audio, a siren, and the easy charging methods. If you have a previous Arlo product, you will find the Pro 3 Floodlight to be quite similar.

Conclusion

I’ve really come to appreciate the Arlo brand and its cameras. While the light that’s built into the Arlo Pro 3 is bright and effective, it really doesn’t compare to the one in the Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight.

At $250 it’s priced about $50 more than the Arlo Pro 3. To us it’s certainly worth the money if you’re placing one of these over a driveway or back entrance.

It’s easy to setup, manage, and maintain. Charging every few weeks or months is fine by us. The app is simple and intuitive with plenty of options and settings. Best of all, it’s as easy to add one of these to an existing system as it is to start fresh.

Extra Exp/Gold/Fragment

During Peak Day (23rd August 2020), players can get more gold, exp, and fragments while playing.

 Bonus Point

There’s a rumor about getting a free Elite pass, is it true or not? Well, to answer this question, let me rephrase Garena from 2nd Anniversary in 2019 “What’s your wish for us this Anniversary (2019), Free Elite Pass, Free Weapon Skins, or Free Costumes?”

That’s what Garena said during the 2nd Anniversary in 2019; a lot of players are talking about this that everyone will get Free Elite Pass during the 3rd Anniversary, some are saying only some of the players will get Free Elite pass. Still, it hasn’t been confirmed yet, not from other servers or by Garena.

Giving a Free Elite Pass is awesome for F2P players; it will provide them with a chance to get a lot of free stuff and an opportunity to advance in-game.

How to enable Linux apps on Chrome OS

0

As many of you may know, Chrome OS has been a long-time project for Google. Since its introduction, it’s seen many iterations over the year. And while Android gets the big headlines for updates, Chrome OS can sometimes appear to be forgotten in the portfolio at times. That definitely changed recently with Google bringing Android apps and now support for full Linux applications.

Why do we need Linux apps?

Linux applications bring Chrome OS a more robust catalog of software than the traditional web-only roots to Chrome devices. It’s a bit of an ironic turn to see Chrome OS go from a glorified web browser to a jack of all trades running three app ecosystems.

Despite this, Linux adds some really great applications that you may want to add to your app drawer. We’d like to take the time to walk you through the steps to make sure you get there successfully.

How to install Linux apps

I hope that I don’t make it sound too daunting. With a few steps and setup pages, you will be ready to install Linux apps.

  • Find Settings in the application menu or from the quick settings menu
  • Select the “Linux (Beta)” option to the far left
  • Click the “Turn on” button
  • Follow the pop-up prompts to choose a username
  • Prompt should end with you in a Linux command-line terminal

You’re ready for Linux apps

Congrats! You now have the ability to install thousands of apps built for Linux. There are a few things to keep in mind when delving into the Linux app ecosystem. First, you should check this list to see if your Chrome OS unit supports this Linux runtime.

Also, if using the command-line or online downloads, the apps need to be compatible with Debian Linux. For those unaware, Debian is one of the oldest and stable versions of Linux. It is the building block for many other variants such as Ubuntu and Pop_OS!. Any apps you Google for need to be available in .deb file format.

Think of these of .exe files from the Windows ecosystem. Once downloaded, you can double-click the file and you’ll be prompted by Chrome OS to install the .deb file. After a few seconds of behind the scenes package management, you should then get a notification of completion and if you’d like to launch the fresh new Linux app.

I think that’s it! Have fun exploring the amazing new options you have from awesome Linux app developers.
