Xbox Game Pass Ultimate review

Recently, cloud gaming gained a huge competitor when Microsoft launched Xbox Game Pass Ultimate offering over 100 games free to play with your subscription. It joins the increasingly crowded space with players like Google Stadia and NVIDIA’s GeForce Now.

I’ve spent the past few weeks testing out Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and here are my thoughts.

Game Selection

There’s no getting around it, Microsoft’s service comes out swinging with a host of hit games at launch. Titles include Xbox exclusives such as games from the Halo, Gears of War, Forza, Ori, and more. There is also a selection of popular games available on third-party platforms including Batman Arkham Knight, Doom Eternal, The Outer Worlds, Witcher 3, and many many others.

Not only does Microsoft have a wide selection of games on offer, but it is sure to grow as time goes on. It has promised future exclusives will show up on the platform on day one. Plus, there is Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Bethesda, which will surely see more of its catalog joining Xbox Game Pass Ultimate in the future. Skyrim on yet another platform anyone?

Additionally, EA Play is also headed to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate in November, growing the library of games even further.

Basically, there is a wide selection of games to choose from on Microsoft’s new service spanning multiple genres. It won’t be difficult to find at least a few titles to throw yourself into and get lost for a bit.

The downside is, unless it’s a Microsoft exclusive game, you won’t be playing many new titles. If you’re someone who likes to play specific games or is always chasing the next big game, you might be left wanting with only a selection of older hits to choose from.

Gaming on the PC

When playing games on your Android device Microsoft streams them much like Google’s Stadia service. However, once you make the jump to PC, everything changes. Xbox Game Pass for PC offers a more traditional gaming setup where you download and install each game on your local PC.

Now, this has both its advantages and disadvantages. For one, if you have a good gaming PC, you’ll be able to play games in higher quality than 720p at 60fps. You’ll also be able to play games without burning through your internet provider’s data cap. On the flip side, if you have a weak PC then you’re sure to see worse performance, and the games are going to eat up lots of space on your hard drive.

In my personal experience, I was unable to install the Game Pass for PC app on my more powerful PC. Each time I tried, I was met with an error and eventually, I just gave up. Finally, I decided to give it a try on a weaker desktop I have, and to my surprise, it installed fine. Unfortunately, the game ran like garbage because of the slower CPU and onboard graphics.

If you’re hoping to run games on your computer, make sure your PC has decent specs, and try installing Xbox Game Pass for PC app ahead of time just to ensure it works.

Perks

Besides giving you access to games across multiple platforms, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate also includes perks. Most of the time these tie directly into gaming with free digital items or expansion passes.

However, you’ll also find offers for other services such as three months of Discord Nitro or two months of Funimation Premium Plus. All of these are limited-time offers, so be sure to claim them quickly and check back often for new perks.

Performance

My time streaming with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate was spent between using my Android phones with the Razer Kishi, and a Chromebook running the Android app on a 200Mbit connection. Microsoft recommends a 10Mbit connection, so mine should be plenty. Regardless, I still ran into many streaming issues and loading screens.

If you’re a console gamer, you’re used to loading screens by now, and I found the wait to be very similar to using a console. However, coming from using Stadia, the wait was brutal. Games load up significantly faster with Google’s service, and that made the wait feel even longer on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

That would have been fine if games ran perfectly after loading. Unfortunately, that was not the case. There were many times I encountered macro blocking and even stutters during gameplay. More than once, I had a game completely close out on me or refuse to load. And in one particular session, the audio was distorted the entire time until I exited the game and launched it again.

All of this and the service is capped at 720p 60fps with stereo sound. To its credit, the graphics still looked good when playing on a phone or even my 12.3-inch Chromebook. At least it did when there weren’t connection issues, which was pretty often. There is a reason this service is still considered a beta.

Final Thoughts

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate offers a wide selection of games, including old hits and new favorites spanning multiple genres for only $14.99 a month. Unfortunately, there are still some glitches in the system, and quality is capped at 720p at 60fps.

While it has its downsides, the service is still technically in beta, and there isn’t a better value out there at the moment. That could all change once Amazon launches Luna, but we’ll have to wait and see on that front.

For now, if you’re a fan of the games offered in the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate library–or you’ve always wanted to try some of them out–I’d say go ahead and sign up for at least a month to give it a try.

At the moment, Microsoft is running a deal where you can get the first month for only a dollar, so it won’t cost you much to decide if this cloud gaming service is for you. Check out our guide on how to sign up over here to get started.

This week sees mmWave 5G going live in some 19 new cities, including Baltimore, Hartford, Las Vegas, Louisville, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and St. Louis. This brings the total to 55 markets with a goal of hitting 60 by the end of the year.

How to get the best quality when streaming Netflix on a Chromebook

0

When you pay for Netflix’s most expensive plan, you want to get the highest streaming quality no matter where you watch, and I don’t blame you.

However, you may be surprised to find out that the quality of your video and audio is not only dependent on your plan and connection, but also the device you use, as well as the browser. Keep reading to find out how to get the highest quality when streaming Netflix on a Chromebook.

In Short

Use the Chrome browser, it supports up to 1080p video, and that’s as good as it gets on a Chromebook.

Chromebooks don’t support 4K HDR playback

First off, it’s time for the bad news, unfortunately, Chromebooks don’t support 4K HDR playback. Instead, 1080p video quality is the best you’re going to get as a Chromebook user.

READ: Get the best resolution for Netflix on your PC

According to the Netflix support page, streaming with the Chrome browser on a Chromebook supports up to 1080p. What about running the Android Netflix app on a Chromebook? I’m glad you asked, turns out, that’s even worse, with a maximum resolution of 480p.

Now, it is possible to get 1080p and even HDR when using the Android app, but that is limited to Netflix certified Android tablets and phones, which Chromebooks are not.

Regardless, even with a maximum resolution of 480p, there is a benefit to using the Netflix app on Chromebooks, offline watching. If you’re out and about, unsure whether there is going to be a stable connection or not, then you’re going to want to download some videos, and the Netflix app is the only way that’s happening.

It’s not all bad news

I’m sure this is disappointing to hear if you pay for Netflix’s top tier plan. However, take solace in the knowledge that there are very few Chromebooks out there with a 4K display.

Also, be glad that Chrome even supports 1080p on Chromebooks, because it is limited to 720p on Windows devices. However, at least Windows users have the option to watch in 4K HDR with surround sound, you can find out how with our guide.

Sharing the same Philosophy

Uptodown and LDPlayer share the same philosophy, and both these platforms have a user-friendly interface, and you can jump easily from one option to another.

To use the program, you do not have to go for the installation process or register anything, and you can start using it as soon as you open it.

With the combination of these two platforms, you will get a complete catalog full of Android apps at your fingertips, and you can use it with the default app installer.

Advantage of an Update

The official app brings you an advantage that you can update the games and apps in the background which your Android Operating System was resisting. However, you have to get root permissions to install them automatically.

The best thing that both Uptodown and LDPlayer contain is that they do not require any registration. Moreover, you do not have to log in to your Gmail account to use the LDPlayer.

Benefits for the players

Some benefits that the combination of Uptodown and LDPlayer brought are as follow:

  • The combination of both platforms brought a non-intrusive interface for the users.
  • The platform comes with its own separate marketplace in the form of an independent app, and you can also access any other store.
  • It gives you the chance to expand the virtual disc or select a manually fixed size for the simulation to the output resolution.
  • You can get specific tweaks to make your game work perfectly according to the situation.
  • The LDPlayer has been considered the most compatible system with the Uptodown as it does not delay the audio being played from a recording video.

  • Players can set if they want to see the HDR option in the game or not.
  • The software allows you to manage your gaming scripts automatically.
  • LDPlayers gives players a chance to faster rerolls in Gacha games with multi-instance sync.

Other features of LDPlayer

The combination of both these platforms has increased the gaming industry’s features as now you can easily take the game from the Uptodown and can play it in the LDPlayer, which you were not able to play before.

Moreover, the platform provides better graphics and performance results, and you can now play any game that you want on a bigger screen instead of your mobile phones.

The LDPlayer gives you the chance to visualize your Android device on a PC, and with the help of Uptodown, you can get your hands on all kinds of games.

Installation

However, the installer is in Chinese, but that should not cause any trouble for you because even if you don’t know Chinese, follow me. Open the Installer, and when it is launched, start clicking the orange button that you see for a few times, and it is installed.

After it has been installed, go to the settings (the gear option) and change the software’s language by going to the second tab and selecting the last option. There you can see all the languages which you can use in this software.

One negative of this LDPlayer is that it does not come with embedded Google Play Services, and you do not have to worry about it actually. You can install the Google Play Services manually after installing the LDPlayer in your system.

Conclusion

LDPlayer’s cooperation with Uptodown has brought various advantages to the gamers and the gaming industry. The LDPlayer is fat better than other emulators such as Bluestacks or Memu, and it has the capacity to keep updating the games from the Uptodown platform. Overall, it has been a great advancement to play Android games on the PC.

Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H4 2nd-Gen Headphones review

The first generation Beoplay H4 headphones from Bang & Olufsen are my favorite headphones of all time. So you can imagine my excitement when they released a follow-up, aptly named the Beoplay H4 2nd gen. Long story short, I’m now in love with the 2nd gen H4 headphones and a big thanks to B&O for sending these out for review.

Design

Bang & Olufsen is a brand that takes design seriously, and that’s something I’ve always appreciated. The H4 2nd Gen are no exception, and not only do they look beautiful, but they are also lightweight and feel premium.

When it comes to the materials used, B&O spared no expense here. Most headphones these days are constructed mostly from plastic, even the high-end ones. Not so with the Beoplay H4 2nd Gen, B&O mainly used leather, stainless steel, and aluminum with only some accents of plastic on the ear cups.

This gives the H4 2nd Gen a luxurious feel, and it’s a real shame that B&O doesn’t include a protective case or even a pouch like so many other brands do to help protect them. That’s a small touch that would have been very appreciated, especially with such a stylish high-quality product like this.

The controls on the H4 2nd gen bucks the recent trend of using touch-sensitive buttons like many other high-end headphones. Instead, B&O has continued using physical buttons, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

In the past, I’ve not been a huge fan of touch-sensitive controls, but they have started to grow on me recently. No matter though, physical buttons work fine and at least they’ve upgraded to USB-C for charging this time. That in itself is a major upgrade in my opinion. Plus, there is still a 3.5mm jack for when you don’t want to or cannot use Bluetooth.

Fit and Comfort

No matter how good a pair of headphones sounds, that’s all moot if they aren’t comfortable. I’m thrilled to report the Beoplay H4 second-gen are one of the most comfortable pair of headphones I’ve ever worn. They are lightweight with plenty of foam cushioning on the headband and ear cups to ensure a pleasant listening experience for hours.

User Experience

One of the biggest upgrades to the H4 2nd gen is that Google Assistant support is now built-in. That means, not only do you have a quick way to access Google Assistant with the push of a button, but they will also read your notifications to you, and even allow you to reply to messages with your voice.

Although, my favorite improvement might be that the H4 2nd gen supports Google Fast Pairing. This makes pairing infinitely easier with a pop-up notification on your phone as soon as you power on the headphones. It also walks you through the setup and teaches you how to use the Google Assistant features.

App

The Bang & Olufsen app is not essential, but it does provide some additional useful options. For example, you can enable or disable Google Assistant support, perhaps if you need a break from it reading your notifications or don’t enjoy that feature.

It also has a fun and unique equalizer built-in, but it won’t please audiophiles who want more accurate control. Regardless, I happen to love the signature sound of Bang & Olufsen headphones, so I never need to play with the EQ that much. Lastly, you’ll need the app if you want to check for software updates, which can often include bug fixes or new features.

Sound Quality

The Beoplay H4 second-gen uses the aptX Bluetooth codec, and the sound quality is everything I loved from the first generation, a spacious soundstage and deep reverberating bass. There are some things you can’t get from playing with an equalizer, and these are two of them.

However, while I’m generally a huge fan of the B&O signature sound, I did find the second-gen H4s to be a little warm for my tastes. After playing with the equalizer a bit and tweaking the brightness, I found the sweet spot and couldn’t be happier with how they sound. The sub-bass is still deep and powerful, while the extra treble adds more clarity for a sound I can’t help but love.

Battery Life

Bang & Olufsen rates the battery life of the H4 second-gen for up to 19-hours. In my experience, they just keep going and going. If anything, I wouldn’t be surprised if they could surpass the 19-hour rating B&O gives them.

However, if the battery ever does die on you in between charges, you can always use them with the 3.5mm jack. That is assuming you have a jack on your phone, or you didn’t forget your dongle.

Final Thoughts

It’s no secret, I’m a Bang & Olufsen fan, its products exude quality from the high-end materials they use to the stunning sound. Despite all of this, the B&O H4 second-gen are not perfect.

I would have loved to have seen a case included to protect these beautiful headphones. The price is also a little on the high side. For not much more money, you can get headphones from Bose and Sony with class-leading active noise cancellation.

While I absolutely love the Beoplay H4 second-gen headphones–and I would highly recommend them to anyone who enjoys high-quality audio–it might be worth waiting for them to go on sale, because $300 is a lot to pay without ANC or a case.

Alternatively, it’s still possible to pick up the first-gen H4s for nearly half the price. They will allow you to experience Bang & Olufsen’s fantastic sound quality, only with slightly less battery life and no Google Assistant integration.

Eufy Video Doorbell 2K (Battery-powered) review

0

When it comes to home security and smart doorbells, the first names that often come to mind are Ring and Nest. And while they maybe among the more popular options, they can also be among the more costly ones, too.

As 2020 draws to a close we’ve seen the rise of other brands in the area of connected home, security cameras, and smart doorbells. In the thick of it now are names like Eufy, Arlo, Simplisafe, and Wyze.

Eufy, a division of the Anker brand centered around smart homes (cameras, security, robot vacuum, etc) has a few products in the video doorbell space. Available now are both wired and wireless options, with kits starting as low as $159.99.

We were recently provided a review sample of the eufy Video Doorbell 2k (Battery-powered), on sale for $199.99. After having it in place for about two weeks we’re happy to share our impressions of the product.

Eufy Video Doorbell 2K

Offered in black and white color options, this bundle is comprised of two key pieces: the doorbell and a Homebase. The former goes on your outside wall, of course, while the latter connects to your router and houses the captured footage.

Features include real-time notifications for pressing the doorbell or activity detected within a particular zone. Want to know the moment someone steps on your porch? No problem. Prefer to wait until someone rings the bell? Easy peasy.

Should you want to interact with someone at the doorbell, it’s as simple as responding in the mobile application. Moreover, you can record some preset messages that can be played at the tap of a button.

Other details include an AI that knows the difference between a human or animal, interoperability with Google Home or Amazon Alexa, and military-grade encryption for footage.

Setup and Configuration

As far as setup goes it doesn’t get much easier. There’s plenty of documentation and help, but it’s essentially plugging the Homebase into your router and mounting the doorbell wherever you want. An app guides you through it, but it ought to be a matter of minutes before you’re good to go.

We really like the wireless aspect because it lets us add a doorbell to entryways that otherwise did not have one. Speaking of which, eufy makes extra doorbells available for just $119.99.

You can opt to mount the doorbell straight out or at a slight angle; it’s a matter of screwing an insert in between the wall and the doorbell. This is handy if you have a spot where you’d prefer to capture a corner of the porch or driveway.

Other Details

The camera is capable of capturing full-color 2K HD video at a 4:3 aspect ratio. Should you find the camera faces direct sunlight, you can opt for Wide Dynamic Range (WDR).

The app provides a number of customizable options, including whether you want to be notified when someone steps in range. Or, maybe you’d prefer to just know when someone presses the button.

You can also configure the notification sounds on the phone and Homebase. Indeed, you can have your hub ring so you hear when someone’s at the door. There are numerous chimes to select with personalized volume levels.

One of our favorite features was recording messages that can be played at the press of a button. This is a convenient way to let solicitors know you’re not interested without having to open the door. It’s also a handy option for those times you might be unable to speak to the person on the other end.

Conclusion

We’ve enjoyed having the extra eye on our property as it captures an area of our yard and porch otherwise unwatched. The app has worked as expected each time we’ve been prompted or go manually playing around.

The eufy Video Doorbell 2K (wireless) is a great option for people looking to add smarts to their home. It’s priced affordably enough and is part of a growing portfolio of products. In other words, you’re not taking much of a risk on a brand that hasn’t done very much.

With this and its other devices the eufy brand has established itself as more than an “up and comer” in the space.

Streamline your restaurant management with tablet POS system for restaurateurs

0

When you run a restaurant, you need a POS or Point-of-Sale system that allows you to take your customers’ orders, charge them for the service, and receive payment.

Traditional systems were stationary machines that restaurateurs used. However, the latest advancement consists of a mobile  tablet POS system for restaurateurs that you can take orders and receive payments directly from it.

You may ask what kind of benefits offers this tablet system. This article will answer exactly that question and digs into the features of this modern system Point of sale system for restaurants. So, without further ado, let’s jump right in!

Traditional POS Vs. Tablet POS System For Restaurateurs

We’ll first start by comparing a traditional system with a both systems.

With a traditional system in your restaurant, your waiter would take your customer’s order on a notepad, go back to the stationary system and punch in the order, and head to the kitchen to convey the order to the chef. As the food gets ready, the chef would yell to your waiter to collect the dish and take it down to the customer who waits patiently (impatiently, in all honesty) at their table. This is a typical scenario in a restaurant that incorporates a traditional system.

In a tablet POS system, on the other hand, takes care of your customer as they arrive at your restaurant and are ready to place their order. The tablet system is capable of taking the customer’s order and charges them (even split the check, if need be) all from the mobile tablet.

According to Business News Daily, the latest systems, with their advanced technology, may improve a restaurant’s customer retention, drive sales, and even secure customer data.

Now that we have compared the basic functionality of a traditional and tablet system, let’s talk about the benefits of the new system.

The Benefits Of the Tablet POS System

By shifting to a tablet system for restaurateurs, you can avail of these benefits.

Streamline Operations With Mobility

The major benefit your restaurant can avail of with a tablet system is more mobility. A traditional system is restricted in terms of movement, and your staff has no option but to do back and forth with the customer order. This may cause exhaustion that leads to human error. In a restaurant, a human error can pose a negative impression on your customer, causing them to look for other options for dine-ins.

A tablet system allows your staff to take in orders and place bills with the hand-held device on the spot. This saves both your staff and your customer’s time, and drastically reduces the chances of error.

Fairly Easy Setup

Another great benefit of a tablet system is the easy setup it offers. All you would need is a tablet, a credit-card reader, and cloud software.

After setting up your restaurant’s account, your staff can access the system and start taking orders from your customers! As nearly everyone knows how to handle a tablet, it will be fairly easy for your staff to use the tablet system without the need for training, as compared to traditional machines.

In case your staff requires a little training, most system providers give detailed ‘getting-started’ support to their customers as well.

Manage Your Inventory Efficiently

Your tablet system will also allow you to keep track of your inventory. The device will also notify you as you run low on various products or items and need refilling and restocking. For your own convenience, you may even set the system up in a way that it sends an email notification as soon as you require restocking.

Cloud Access

When you use a tablet system, all the information that is processed is saved on the cloud software that the system is linked with. Since the data is saved on the cloud, you can access your account from any internet-enabled device, such as your desktop computer.

Whenever you require any changes done on the inventory, or system, etc. you can do so on the cloud, and the changes will get updated on all of your devices in real-time. This is a great benefit for restaurateurs and allows in streamlining operations.

Fast Integrations

Another benefit that tablet systems have is the fast integration that they offer. Since the tablet POS system for restaurateurs incorporates advanced technology, you’ll find it much easier to keep up-to-date and integrate it with other platforms that your restaurant may use.

Due to their fast and easy integration, tablet systems can manage your staff data, your costs, your online orders, and deliveries, while integrating with your traditional systems to offer great overall value.

Customer Trust

When you incorporate a tablet POS system, your staff can process payments in front of your customers instead of taking their credit cards out of their sight to a traditional system. This will generate trust in your customers as they will be able to view the transaction in front of them.

Moreover, you can store your customer’s data on your system and offer rewards and benefits for repeat visits. As you reward your customers for repeat visits and recognize them, your customers will feel welcomed at your restaurant, and would want to come back over and over again for your excellent hospitality, and what else do restaurateurs want more than that?

Wrapping Up

A tablet POS system for restaurateurs is a hand-held device that allows the staff to place orders and process payments at the spot. Because of the advanced technology that these tablet systems have, your restaurant can avail of streamlined operations due to the mobility they provide, easy setup, efficient inventory management, cloud access, fast integrations, and customer trust.

Due to all of these benefits, greater efficiency, and excellent customer satisfaction, restaurateurs can receive a greater bottom line and help their business flourish in the long-run.
