Google Assistant speakers and displays now support Apple Music

0

It’s official, Apple Music is coming to Google Assistant smart speakers and displays. Google made the announcement yesterday on its blog, meaning support is arriving just in time for you to listen to all your Christmas favorites this holiday season.

According to the blog post, Apple Music began rolling out to Nest Audio, Nest Hub Max, Nest Mini, and other Google Assistant-enabled devices on December 7, 2020. In order to start using Apple Music with your smart speakers and displays, you’ll need to first link the service in the Google Home app.

To do this, open the Google Home app and tap on the plus icon in the top left-hand corner. Next, choose Music under Manage services, and finally, choose Apple Music from the list. At this time, Apple Music is still missing from the list of supported services for me, which means like most Google features, this one is rolling out in phases. Keep checking back over the next few days if it’s still not live for you as well.

If you’re anything like me, your house is filled with Google Assistant speakers. I love the ability to play music throughout my home and Assistant-enabled speakers make it so easy. I’ve also been known to hop between music services from time to time if there is a good deal. However, over the past couple of years, I’ve immediately disqualified any service that isn’t supported by my Google smart speakers.

Despite most music streaming apps having the option to Cast music to the speakers, it’s just so much more convenient to control playback with your voice. It’s fantastic to see another service join the list of supported music streamers for Assistant speakers. Especially one as large as Apple.

Sure, it doesn’t quite have the popularity of Spotify, but at last count, Apple Music had over 60 million subscribers back in 2019. That puts it far above other supported services like Deezer, and makes this great news for everyone.

Tribit StormBox Micro review

0

I like portable bluetooth speakers. I like them a lot. I have a collection of them for just about every occasion. From nano speakers like the Noxgear 39g for running to the louder JBL Charge 4 speaker for hanging out on my deck. It’s a little bit of an addiction honestly. I add 2-3 more speakers to my collection every year.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to review the Tribit FlyBuds 3 and was thoroughly impressed. Since it’s been a couple months from my last speaker purchase, I jumped at the opportunity to review the Tribit StormBox Micro. Will it impress me as much as the FlyBuds 3?

Design

The StormBox Micro is designed to compete against the likes of the Bose Soundlink Micro, Ultimate Ears Wonderboom, or JBL Clip speakers. While these speakers aren’t overly large or heavy, they aren’t necessarily pocketable either. As a result, they offer ways to attach them to various objects.

The JBL Clip, as the name implies, has a built in carabiner type attachment. The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom features a ripcord loop; the Bose Soundlink Micro and Tribit StormBox Micro both feature a rubber band to attach the speakers around an object such as a bicycle handlebar. If I had to guess; Tribit is intentionally going head-to-head with Bose as it relates to this speaker.

The StormBox Micro measures 3.9 x 3.9 x 1.4 inches and weighs just 10.2 oz. The speaker is made of rubberized plastic and durable fabric. The business side of the speaker features volume up/down buttons separated by a multifunction button.

Power and Bluetooth pairing buttons sit along an edge, as well as, status and battery indicator LEDs. A USB-C port lies on an adjacent edge. The StormBox Micro can pair up to eight different audio sources and also supports stereo mode pairing with another Stormbox Mini or “Party Mode” as Tribit calls it.

The StormBox Micro is powered by a 2,600mAh lithium rechargeable battery offering up to 8 hours of playback. Additionally, the unit is IP67 waterproof so you don’t have to worry about the speaker getting rained on or accidentally dropped in a pool.

Performance

Audio Playback: With 9W of power output, I expected the speaker to be loud enough to fill a room with sound. It won’t disappoint in the loudness department as it is more than capable of filling an average-sized room with music. I can clearly hear it in one room from a room or two over.

The volume up and down buttons are directly tied to my iPhone’s volume so adjustments are reflected on the phone unlike some speakers which operate independently of the phone’s output.

While the speaker is loud, I’m not as impressed with its dynamic range as I was with the FlyBuds 3. If you like lower bass tones, you might really enjoy the sound the StormBox Micro produces. To me, it sounds a bit muddled in the midrange and treble notes are understated.

The bass is strong and even when played at max volume, it does not distort badly. Listening to 21 Savage “Bank Account”, the low end remained tight where similarly-sized speakers tend to rattle. Lyrics are clear and stand out as they are intended. The hi-hat is present but just isn’t as bright as I prefer.

I cycled through several different artists and genres including The Avett Brothers “Head Full of Doubt / Road Full of Promise,” The Strumbellas “The Hired Band,” Holly Humerstone, “Falling Asleep at the Wheel,” LCD Soundsystem, “All My Friends,” Muse “Uprising,” among others. They all sounded decent and more than adequate should you wish to strap this speaker to your bike and share music with nearby friends. Bike with your audiophile friends and they may ask you to ride ahead.

Speakerphone: I was pleasantly surprised when I received a call during testing and was able to use the StormBox Micro as a speakerphone. Nowhere in the user manual or the Tribit website does it mention this capability.

There is in fact a microphone just to the right of the power button. The call was clear on both ends so I would not have any problem answering calls if necessary. For those working from home, this may be the perfect “conference room” speakerphone for your home office.

Final Thoughts

The StormBox Micro features 8-hours of playback time and Bluetooth 5.0 range of 100 feet. Based on my limited testing, I can’t dispute these claims as I’ve jammed out with the speaker at over ½ volume for at least 2-3 hours and the LED power indicators still show three out of five dots. I’ve moved freely from room to room and across my house with no drop-outs.

There’s a lot to like about the Tribit StormBox Micro, especially if your preference is strong bass response.  The speaker retails for less than $50 ($49.99 with additional $10 off coupon) which makes it almost half the price of its competitors retail prices. Tribit offers a generous 18 month warranty (30 months with registration) and a 30-day money back guarantee.

While the StormBox Micro isn’t likely to win audiophiles over, I think most listeners will appreciate its excellent power and mounting possibilities. I personally look forward to the return of golf season where I’ll attach the speaker to the uprights of a golf cart.

Fairywill Pro P11 Toothbrush review

0

My teeth are porous and very difficult to keep clean regardless of how I brush (up and down versus forward and back), how often I brush (let’s be honest who really brushes after every meal?), or what toothpaste I use.  For that reason, I must use electric toothbrushes.

My very first experience with an “sonic” toothbrush was in the early 2000’s with the Philips Sonicare. Since then, I’ve bounced around to several different brands including Oral B and most recently the Triple Bristle with unique 3-head design.

I have a difficult time not only dropping upwards of $100 for a toothbrush, but also the cost of being locked into costly replacement heads. It’s no wonder that companies like Quip sell you a modestly priced handle and hit you with a recurring subscription of brush heads.

Having the opportunity to test and review the Fairywill Pro P11 actually came at a very opportune time. I was planning to buy one anyway! Shh, don’t tell them! The Fairwill Pro P11 can generally be purchased for less than $50 on Walmart and occasionally on their deals site, Woot!

With eight included brush heads and a 2-year warranty, I won’t have to worry about buying another toothbrush for a long time. But how well will it clean my teeth? Having two years worth of brush heads does me no good if it doesn’t do a good job cleaning the chompers.

Form

I’ve never unboxed a toothbrush like the Fairywill Pro P11 before. I don’t purchase top of the line models but they generally come sealed in that armored plastic requiring a plasma cutter to open.

The Fairywill was nicely packaged in a box, within a box, within a box. You get the base handle, aforementioned eight brush heads, a travel case, a USB charging cord (no AC adapter), manual, registration card, and a micro-USB and USB-C adapter to charge other devices. The Fairwill uses a DC barrel connector for charging. Not sure why they went this route instead of just going with USB-C or micro-USB for simplicity’s sake.

The Fairywill Pro P11 is available in both black and white versions. The black version features a rose gold colored band which houses a series of LED lights used to indicate charge status as well as mode.

Pressing the single button cycles through normal, soft, massage and off. Normal equating to 62,000 brush strokes per minute while soft reduces that to 56,000. Massage alternates between the normal and soft modes.

If you prefer not to sing the ABCs in your head while brushing to ensure you reach the ADA recommended two minutes of brushing, the P11 will slightly pause every 30 seconds reminding you to move from one quadrant of your mouth to the next.

Function

Maybe I don’t put enough thought into my toothbrushes and the technology or science of clean teeth. Or maybe Fairywill is overthinking it? Either way, you should be aware that the P11 toothbrush features a 3rd generation Maglev motor. The motor is driven by an 800 mAh rechargeable lithium battery delivering 30 days of continuous service.

With an IPX7 waterproof rating, it delivers a true “amphibious” experience. What does all this mean? Let me tell you.

I used the normal setting for the past week. I didn’t experience any discomfort or sensitivity on my gums or my teeth. The brush does seem to make broader strokes than other electric toothbrushes I’ve used in the past. I can see actual brush strokes while others appear to more or less vibrate in place. As a result, it works up a good lather and leaves my whole mouth feeling refreshed including my tongue.

One point of caution is bumping your teeth with anything but the bristles. That vibration on your teeth is definitely more pronounced than with other brushes I’ve used as well.

I’m completely satisfied with the Fairywill Pro P11 toothbrush at this point. My teeth are visibly cleaner and whiter after using the brush for just one week. The charge seems to be holding up well. My only gripe is with the charging cable. Assuming you only need to charge this once per month, there’s a high likelihood in my case that I’ll eventually misplace the non-standard USB charging cable.

The Lowdown

If you’re in the market for a reasonably priced electric toothbrush, you can’t really go wrong. There’s almost 2,000 Amazon ratings averaging over 4.5 stars.

1More True Wireless ANC Headphones review

Up for review today are the 1More True Wireless ANC Headphones. Priced about $140, they’re Bluetooth 5.0-connected and feature six hours of playback per charge. Moreover, they support wireless charging, too. How do they fare? Read on to find out.

Design

The True Wireless ANC Headphones from 1More are some of the largest in its collection of true wireless headphones. Given the need for a larger battery and more microphones for active noise cancellation, that should come as no surprise.

Also unsurprising, is the weighty oversized charging case for the 1More True Wireless ANC Headphones. It may be the heaviest charging case I’ve ever used in a pair of TWS Bluetooth headphones. All of that heft makes it feel dense and high-quality though, and you’ll be glad for all the extra battery life that additional weight provides.

A few of the most noteworthy aspects of the case include the premium matte finish, USB-C port used for charging, and the inclusion of wireless charging. 1More genuinely went the extra mile making this the high-end charging case out of all of its true wireless headphones.

Comfort & Fit

Two of the most comfortable TWS headphones I’ve ever reviewed include the Stylish True Wireless Headphones and ColorBuds True Wireless Headphones from 1More. Both pairs of headphones include a variety of ear tips that made it easy to find the perfect fit, and that’s not easy for someone like myself with smaller than average ear canals.

Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the True Wireless ANC Headphones. In fact, they may be the most uncomfortable true wireless headphones I’ve ever tried. This is all due to 1More choosing to use large oval-shaped ear tips on this model, instead of the more traditional round ones. The angle of the stem also felt a little off to me and made it difficult to position the buds in my ears properly.

In the end, even after trying several of the ear tips and loops in an effort to find a secure and comfortable fit, I was left disappointed. The 1More True Wireless ANC Headphones were so uncomfortable I found it difficult to wear them for more than 30 minutes at a time. Even worse, the buds often felt like they were on the brink of falling out of my ears because of the oversized ear tips being unable to jam deep enough into my ear canal.

If you have larger ear canals, this will most likely be a non-issue for you, but if you’re a member of the small ear canal club, look elsewhere.

User Experience

Besides my complaint about the fit of the 1More True Wireless ANC Headphones, I only encountered one other issue. At some point, one combination of ear tips and loops caused one of the buds to not connect to the charging contacts.

That left me with a dead earbud one day when I was trying to listen to some music around the house. Just something to be on the lookout for when inserting the buds back in the case.

While the Stylish True Wireless Headphones made use of physical buttons and the ColorBuds True Wireless Headphones used touch-sensitive controls, the 1More True Wireless ANC Headphones use a combination of both.

The touch-sensitive buttons are used to control the ANC levels and switch to pass-through mode, while the physical buttons are used to control music playback. I found the combo to work well in practice, and it made it easy to not get mixed up when skipping tracks, changing volume, or enabling/disabling active noise cancellation.

While we’re on the subject of controlling music playback, the 1More True Wireless ANC Headphones also feature an infrared sensor to auto-pause playback when removed from your ears. Likewise, it will resume playback when reinserted into your ears.

App

Like most modern true wireless headphones, 1More has an app, and while it’s not essential, it can provide some useful settings. However, I was disappointed to see that it doesn’t include any options to customize the buttons like on 1More’s other TWS Bluetooth headphones.

Instead, the controls are extremely limited for the True Wireless ANC Headphones, only offering controls to adjust the ANC levels and enable pass-through mode.

Some other options I’d love to see 1More implement in its app include an equalizer, battery level for the charging case, and the removal of the banner in the notification tray. As far as I can tell the notification is entirely non-functional and unneeded when every music app already provides controls in its own notification.

Sound Quality

The 1More True Wireless ANC Headphones use the aptX codec for Android phones and AAC for iOS devices. Both codecs are capable of providing high-quality wireless audio, and with an Android phone, you can actually switch to AAC if you like.

In my time with the 1More True Wireless ANC Headphones, I was very pleased with the audio quality. The highs are crisp and clean with plenty of detail, while also offering a nice amount of sub-bass for a well-balanced sound signature. My only criticism of the sound quality would be that the soundstage is a little more limited than I prefer. Other than that, I found the audio to be one of the best parts of these headphones.

ANC

The active noise cancellation on the True Wireless ANC Headphones from 1More worked fairly well with repetitive background noise. Oddly enough, the Mild setting appeared to do a better job than Strong though, so you may want to give that a try instead of jumping straight to Strong.

The pass-through mode also comes in handy if you need to hear your surroundings for a quick conversation or while out on a walk.

Battery Life

1More rates the True Wireless ANC for up to six hours of continuous playback with ANC off and five hours with ANC enabled. Combined with the case that will provide you with 22 hours total without ANC and 18 hours with active noise cancellation turned on.

Whether or not the True Wireless ANC live up to those claims, I cannot tell you. As I’ve mentioned previously, I struggled to use these for longer than 30 minutes at a time due to the uncomfortable fit. However, I will say 1More’s battery life estimations have always been accurate in the past.

Final Thoughts

1More has created a pair of headphones that could be a wonderful more affordable alternative to the Sony WF-1000XM3, if it not for the extremely uncomfortable fit. Despite featuring fantastic sound quality, active noise cancellation, and long battery life, it is all ruined by the intolerable pain I felt after wearing these for any sustained period of time.

If you’ve never had any problems wearing larger ear tips with in-ear buds, then the 1More True Wireless ANC Headphones are worth a try. Otherwise, I would suggest trying the Stylish True Wireless Headphones from 1More if you don’t need ANC, or the Sony WF-1000XM3 if you do.

1More is also running a Christmas sale between December 7 and December 24, 2020, and as a special thank you, they have provided us with a code for an additional 10% off. Just enter the code ANDROID10 at checkout and enjoy the extra savings on some great headphones during the holidays.
