Google One now includes a VPN; here’s how to use it

0

Google One is a cornucopia of an app that wants to house many of Google’s services in one location. Your Google Drive subscription and many of your Family Member settings are all found in Google One.

Google recently make another addition by offering users a built-in VPN service. No separate app, or signing up with a different vendor. It’s just right there in the Google One app you already have.

What does it do?

For those that may not know, a VPN is a Virtual Private Network. This offers a software level between your device data and the internet connection you have. It’s a well-respected way to make sure you are on a secure connection at all times.

Google offering this to One subscribers makes great sense. The team at Mountain View has a long history of secure software and users should be able to trust that they can do the same with your VPN.

How to turn it on

Knowing what a VPN is only half the battle if you don’t know how to make it work. We will walk you through that in the Android app over the next few steps.

  • Download the Google One app if you haven’t already
  • Find the new colorful number 1 logo in your app draw and open
  • If you haven’t used VPN yet you should see a card on how to turn it on
  • Click Enable VPN
  • Toggle the VPN to on
  • Confirm the pop-up for the connection request

That’s pretty much it. You should now have a virtual network adding a layer of security to your internet connection. A few other things is that you should have a persistent notification in the drop-down shade showing your VPN status. You will also have another reminder when you pull the shade all the way down where your mobile network banner would be.

Love quick tiles in the drop-down shade too? Google has an option to add this to the menu as well. Hit the edit button on the tile area and add it to your shortcuts. Now, get to using all this Google One goodness!

Coral UV Sterlizer & Dryer review (Video)

0

Now more than ever, cleanliness and sanitization is of utmost importance. The coronavirus pandemic will be with us for at least another six months or more so we need to stay vigilant about our practices.

If you think about the things you use or touch on a daily basis, many of them are rather small. We’re talking not just about our phone, but keys, wallet, eyeglasses, and writing instruments. How are you going about keeping them clean or sanitized?

The Coral UV Sanitizer and Dryer is an excellent solution for people who want to routinely clean and sanitize their items. About the size of a portable cooler, it can sanitize multiple items at once.

Simply place your items inside of the Coral UV and press the button to begin. How big is the internal unit? Big enough to place six baby bottles, according to the marketing materials. We were able to easily place multiple pens and pencils, a wallet, car keys, phone, tablet, and sunglasses with plenty of space left over.

Not only can you sanitize your things with the UV light, but you can also dry them as well. So, feel free to take the children’s binky, toothbrush, watch, small toys, and other items and place them in after a wash.

Sanitizing can be done in as little as ten minutes with settings for 10, 15, and 20 minutes. Drying settings are 30, 40, 50, and 60 minutes. Of course you can also do both, simply factor ten minutes for sanitizing and pick the length of drying.

There’s also a handy “storage” option which is great for overnight or up to 24 hours. It will sanitize for 10 minutes and then dry for 50 minutes and then sterilize for two minutes every two hours.

With a relatively small footprint, a modern and clean design, the Coral UV is the sort of thing you won’t put away. In fact, because it now resides in a pretty common area of the home, we’re constantly placing items in it upon coming home or going to bed.

Standout Features

  • Quiet fan won’t disturb or disrupt
  • Cleans many of the everyday items we use without hassle
  • Generous capacity
  • Easy-to-use interface
  • Modern design looks good in any environment

Where to Buy

You can learn more about the Coral UV Sterilizer and Dryer at its website where you can purchase it for $129.99.

How to use Watch Party on Hulu to stream videos together online

0

During the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve seen a lot of normal every day activities change. Some have changed for the near term, and some will be long lasting changes. One of the things we used to take for granted before COVID-19 hit was getting together to watch movies and TV with our friends and family.

Fortunately, many of the streaming services have stepped up with Watch Party features to allow us to stream together while apart. Some of the services that support this include Disney+, Hulu, and Prime Video. Today, we’ll look at how to start a Watch Party on Hulu so you can watch your favorite shows and movies with others.

First, you will both need to subscribe to either the ad-free or ad-supported version of Hulu. What happens if you pay for ad-free and your friend is on the ad-supported plan? In that case, the video will pause for the ad-free subscribers while ads play for the people with the ad-supported plan.

Also, it’s worth noting that Watch Party is only available for users 18 and over on the service, it doesn’t work on mobile at this time, and you’re limited to a total of eight viewers. Now, follow these simple steps below and get to binge-watching.

1. Open Hulu.com using the web browser on your computer.
2. Navigate to the Details page for the show or movie you’d like to watch.
3. Click on the Watch Party icon and select “start the party.”
4. Copy and share the Watch Party link with up to seven people.
5. Once everyone has joined, click “start party.”

That’s all it takes, now you can stream as much as you want and talk with each other using the embedded chatroom. Just remember, whoever you invite will have the ability to control playback of what you’re watching.

1More PistonBuds True Wireless Headphones review

0

Up for review today we have the PistonBuds True Wireless Headphones from 1More. Priced below $50, they have promise some rather interesting features. How do they fare in our testing? Read on to find out.

Design

What first struck me about the design of the PistonBuds True Wireless Headphones is how lightweight the case is, and how thin the plastic feels. The second thing I noticed was that 1More went with USB-C for the charging port, and I can’t express how happy I am to see that, especially on headphones at this price point.

After opening the case, I was surprised to feel how curiously strong the magnets are that hold the buds in place. I found I struggled a bit trying to remove them on occasion, but that’s a small price to pay for not having to worry about losing your buds when opening the case.

Comfort & Fit

I’ve mentioned in many of my previous reviews that I have smaller than average ear canals, that can make it challenging to find wireless buds that fit comfortably. For the most part, 1More does a good job of including ear tips that provide a pleasant and secure fit with its products.

And while the PistonBuds True Wireless Headphones were comfortable using the smallest ear tips, I still wish 1More would have included an even narrower pair like they did with the Stylish True Wireless Headphones. In fact, I even tried the smallest ear tips from the Stylish True Wireless Headphones on the PistonBuds, and it improved the fit and comfort immensely.

In the end, I was satisfied with the fit of the PistonBuds, they stay securely in my ears and ear fatigue doesn’t set in too soon. Still, it could have been better if 1More recycled the ear tips from its Stylish True Wireless Headphones.

User Experience

The PistonBuds make use of touch-sensitive controls that work fairly well. However, something I noticed was the lack of gestures. A double-tap on the right bud will play/pause music or answer calls, while double-tapping on the left bud allows you to access Google Assistant, and that’s it.

If you want to skip tracks or adjust the volume the app informs you to use your phone. Now, it is possible to use Assistant to skip tracks or adjust the volume, however, it’s a little cumbersome and some additional gestures would have been appreciated.

I can understand the need to cut back on features in order to meet a lower price point. For instance, there is no sensor in the PistonBuds to automatically pause music when you remove them, but the lack of basic playback controls seems like a bit of an odd choice. Surely, it’s not that expensive to add a couple more gestures.

Besides the lack of gestures, the PistonBuds were a pleasure to use and I didn’t encounter any major issues with them.

App

I’ve always wished 1More would add a couple more features to its app, most notably an equalizer. However, the PistonBuds are lacking even basic options inside of the app, or any options at all. For all intents and purposes, it is only used to upgrade the firmware and serves no other function.

Even though the app is essentially useless for the PistonBuds, there was a firmware update during my time with them. For that reason alone, you’ll want to download it to make sure you’re running the latest software.

Sound Quality

The 1More PistonBuds are reserved in the highs with low thumping bass. Overall, they provide a warm sound signature because of this, and lack some of the clarity and brightness you’d hear from the more expensive Stylish True Wireless Headphones from 1More.

That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the PistonBuds; they sound especially good when listening to rap and pop tracks where the bass takes center stage most of the time. Without a doubt, the sound quality is more than worth the price of admission on these buds.

Battery Life

1More rates the PistonBuds for up to 3.5 hours of consecutive playback with a total of up to 20 hours with the charging case. In my experience, that all rang true. If anything, the battery life was slightly under the 3.5-hour claim, but it was extremely close.

Final Thoughts

I’ve been a fan of 1More’s Piston lineup since I first tried the wired versions years ago. The quality of the audio combined with an affordable price made them a fantastic value. I’m happy to say the same is true for the Bluetooth version of the PistonBuds.

For $50 or less, you get a lightweight pair of true wireless headphones that provide rich sound with decent battery life. There are plenty of Bluetooth headphones on the market at this price point, but this pair from 1More truly impresses for its audio prowess, and it’s perfect for any music fan on a budget.

1More is also running a Christmas sale between December 7 and December 24, 2020, and as a special thank you, they have provided us with a code for an additional 10% off. Just enter the code ANDROID10 at checkout and enjoy the extra savings on some great headphones during the holidays.

A Disney Plus price hike is coming in 2021

0

It was inevitable, and we all knew it would be coming sooner or later. Yesterday, during its investor day event, The Walt Disney Company announced a price increase is coming to the Disney+ streaming service.

Fortunately, for now, the price increase is only a dollar bringing the total from $6.99 a month to $7.99 a month in the US. In Europe, the price will increase from €7.99 to €8.99 a month. The Hulu ad-supported plan with Disney+ and ESPN+ will also see a price increase in March going up to $13.99 a month, and there will be a new bundle this time with the ad-free Hulu plan starting at $18.99 a month.

At least we can also take some solace in the fact that we’re learning about this months in advance, because the price won’t go up until March 2021. That still gives us a few months of streaming all our Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel favorites at the debut price.

Speaking of, now would be the perfect time to sign up for the annual plan and lock in that $69.99 price before it goes up, because starting in March the price will jump to $79.99 a year.

Subscribing with the yearly plan might be the smart move going forward to lock in a lower price, because as we’ve seen with other streaming networks, there’s no telling when another price hike is coming.

Along with the price increase, Disney had much more to share with its investors. For starters, in only 13 months the streaming service has racked up 86.6 million subscribers worldwide. To put that in perspective, worldwide Netflix has 195.15 million subscribers after being in the streaming game for over 10 years now.

Investor day wasn’t all about price increases and subscriber counts though. Disney also announced there are 10 Star Wars series in the works, as well as 10 Marvel series and 15 Disney/Pixar series with an additional 15 features from the two studios–including Raya and The Last Dragon coming to theaters and Disney+ Premier Access in March of 2021.
