RedMagic 6 gets global launch

0

Nubia on Tuesday announced the global launch of its RedMagic 6 gaming-centric smartphone. The handset, which boasts a number of high-end hardware features, launched in China earlier this month.

Priced reasonably at $599, the RedMagic 6 is an impressive one in terms of specifications, giving gamers no less than 12GB RAM to play with. Moreover, it provides an excellent display with 165Hz refresh rate and touch sampling up to 500Hz.

Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, the RedMagic 6 also packs a 5,050mAh battery with 66W fast charging and a built-in turbofan to keep things cool.

Other details include a 64-megapixel triple camera system, 3.5mm headphone jack, shoulder trigger buttons, and full customizable light effects.

US Consumers Beware

Although Nubia’s latest is a 5G phone, the global model doesn’t support the full range of 5G bands in the US. In fact, as PhoneScoop points out, it only provides basic support for AT&T’s 4G network. Additionally, it is not compatible with 4G in bands 13 and 71, which are critical bands for Verizon and T-Mobile, respectively.

Standard and Pro Models

Nubia offers the RedMagic 6 in two versions, a standard and Pro. The former starts at $599 USD and comes in Eclipse Black while the latter runs about $100 more at $699 and comes in Moon Silver. For your extra money you’ll get double the storage capacity and 25% more memory.

  • RedMagic 6 12GB+128GB
  • RedMagic 6 Pro 16GB+256GB

Readers can sign up for RedMagic 6 pre-orders starting on April 9 with full availability starting on April 15.

How to install a new launcher on Android 10

0

On Android the launcher is the interface that facilitates your icons on your home screen and, if available, your app drawer. It is akin to the purpose of your desktop on your computer. In short it’s how your phone looks and feels.

We know that there are a few OEM’s out there that remove features you would prefer to have such as an app drawer from their own launchers. Moreover, some create their own UI experience with features and settings.

Changing the launcher on your phone can breathe new life into an otherwise boring device. It not only allows for different animations and settings, but usually opens the door to gestures, new icons, and features that weren’t baked in at the factory

One of the best parts about Android is its flexibility and options. Don’t like the interface or launcher on your device? Swap it out!

Here’s how you can install a launcher of your choice on Android 10.

Installing a launcher on Android 10

The safest and best place to get a launcher is from the Google Play Store. You can search for the term “launcher” and get a plethora of options presented to you. The most popular third-party launcher is Nova Launcher which is offered for free. But spend some time with it, or ask around, and you’ll find there are a lot of the good features hidden behind a one-time in-app purchase.

If you are looking for a free and trustworthy launcher, Microsoft Launcher or POCO Launcher are also worth a look.

Once you have chosen your launcher, install it just as you would any other app. Once it’s installed, tap on Open.

You will more than likely be asked to configure your launcher on the first run so simply choose your preferences and proceed.

Should you still be on your default launcher, try and use the home button or gesture to toggle a prompt as shown below:

If you are not able to access your new launcher in the step above, you can navigate to your settings and look for the Launcher settings. This can vary from one OEM to the next, but you can find it by looking for Default Launcher or Home in your settings.

From here, select the launcher you wish to have as your default and that’s it! Not to worry, though, you can always undo this and revert back to the original settings. Or, you can install another option and make that app the default.

If you wish to uninstall the launcher, simply navigate to your Apps from Settings, find the launcher you installed and uninstall it. It’s the same process as removing a standard app. You can also do this from the Google Play Store.

With that, you can now mix and match between different launchers, but we highly encourage that you experiment with them one at a time. Also only install from developers with a good track record as there are launchers out there that can also install malicious apps on your phone or carry ads.

Nubia Watch Review

0

Up for review today is the Nubia Watch, a wraparound wearable that features a 4-inch flexible display. How does it fare in an increasingly crowded space that’s dominated by the likes of Apple and Fitbit? Read on to find out.

Design

The unique form factor of the Nubia Watch is what truly makes it stand out in the world of wearables. Thanks to its 4.01-inch 960 x 192 flexible AMOLED display which is certainly eye-catching. Never have I used a smartwatch before which literally wraps around my wrist giving me so much screen real estate.

Unfortunately, a good portion of that wrap-around screen is on the backside of your wrist, and goes unused. It still looks cool to see the images on the display fade away into the distance, but ultimately, it serves no purpose if you can’t see what’s over there.

With a four-inch curved display, it’s no surprise that the Nubia Watch comes off as a little bulky. However, despite the substantial size of the Nubia Watch, it still comes off as stylish, thanks to the design of the ceramic and stainless steel body. If I had to sum up its style in a couple of words, I’d go with industrial elegance.

I’ve worn my share of oversized smartwatches over the years, and it’s difficult to make something this large, yet modern and fashionable at the same time. Nubia did a fantastic job creating a massive smartwatch that looks stylish enough that I wouldn’t mind wearing it day-to-day.

On the question of durability, the watch itself feels solid but I’m definitely concerned about the display. I’m not sure how well the screen would live up to scratches or an impact. I fear it would not stand up to much abuse if you’re an active person or prone to bumping into things. However, I didn’t put any of these to the test and I’m typically very careful with my electronics in general.

User Experience

So, you’re probably wondering, is it comfortable to wear? Surprisingly, it is extremely comfortable. Initially, I was concerned about the weight and overall bulk of the Nubia Watch, especially because it includes a sleep tracking feature. I thought to myself, how am I ever going to sleep with something this massive on my wrist? Fortunately, it wasn’t an issue.

Next, I’m sure you’re curious about how useful this oversized four-inch display is. In short, not very. I had such high hopes about being able to read and reply to emails and messages using the Nubia Watch. Yet, all those hopes were dashed after I began to check my first few notifications that came through on the watch.

Unfortunately, notification support is extremely limited on the Nubia Watch. With some notifications, you can barely see a few words, while other notifications allow you to read the entire message. Even worse, the only option you have is to close it out, there is no way to reply to your notifications.

It’s disappointing, because what should have been the biggest benefit and selling point of the Nubia Watch, is sadly missing in action. Also, when you dismiss a notification on your watch, it doesn’t do the same on your phone. Meaning, you’re still going to have to deal with that notification again, once you pick up your phone.

As for what the Nubia Watch does well, it’s a semi-decent fitness tracker in an enormous body. It tracks your steps, heart rate, sleep, and exercise. While the sleep and step tracker work well and have decent support in the app, the heart rate tracker doesn’t appear to monitor 24 hours a day and there are only four exercises to choose from in the Sports app. Yet again, another area the Nubia Watch comes up lacking, unfortunately.

The Nubia Watch is also good at making phone calls, again with some caveats. Even though there is a nice large dialer to place calls, they are made using your phone, which means this isn’t a standalone device and you’re going to need your phone on you.

Another thing that bothered me was the always-on display. With the Nubia Watch, it gives you the full-blown display at regular brightness. This is a far cry from what you get on most wearables when the always-on display is enabled.

Typically, the brightness of the display is lowered and only the essential data is shown on the screen. I actually prefer that, because with every element showing at full brightness, the Nubia Watch is very distracting. Plus, it significantly shortens the battery life, and any touch could have you accidentally opening apps or notifications.

It would have been far better to use a more limited always-on display option. Alternatively, the Nubia Watch could have only lit up when a notification comes in displaying it for you to see, or they could have allowed you to schedule when the always-on display would be active. Any or all of these would have been a huge improvement to the user experience.

Additionally, I was unsatisfied that I was only able to view the time in the 24-hour format. It’s not that I cannot read time in this format, but I much prefer the 12-hour clock format using AM and PM.

Finally, there is no voice assistant support on the Nubia Watch. If you find yourself using Google Assistant or Alexa on other wearables, this could be the final deal-breaker for you.

I wish I had more positive things to say about the Nubia Watch, because I was so excited to try out this new form factor, but the software appears to be the weak link here. It makes me curious as to how well the Nubia Watch would work if it ran Wear OS, given its tighter integration with Android and access to more apps. Then again, it might not make much of a difference if the OS and apps weren’t built to take advantage of the larger-than-life display.

Performance

The Nubia Watch uses a pretty ancient Snapdragon Wear 2100 chip paired with a healthy 1GB of RAM. In my experience, performance was silky smooth, and that’s more than you can say for many Wear OS smartwatches. Much of this can probably be attributed to the fact that the Nubia Watch doesn’t do a whole lot. There just aren’t many apps to use, but at least when you do use them they’ll open quickly.

Battery

Nubia rates the battery life at up to 7 days, and I’d say that’s not far off. You wouldn’t think a smartwatch with a screen this massive could get anywhere near the 5 days I was seeing, but maybe that’s because I didn’t use it much.

When the app selection is so limited and you can’t see or interact with your notifications, there just isn’t much of a reason to look at the screen for an extended amount of time. Furthermore, the always-on display was either all or nothing, so I went with nothing most of the time.

That in itself could dramatically increase the battery life of a wearable device, and I’m almost certain it’s why the 425mAh battery was able to last so long.

Final Thoughts

In the end, you have to ask, what does the Nubia Watch do better than other wearables? Unfortunately, the answer is nothing. Even budget fitness bands like the Amazfit Band 5 are better fitness trackers collecting more stats with a better app, and it has support for Alexa built-in.

On the Wear OS side of things, smartwatches like the new Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 GPS provide much better integration with notifications while also offering up improved health tracking with a better app.

Overall, what makes the Nubia Watch stand out most is the sheer size of its display, and even that isn’t fully utilized. I really hoped the Nubia Watch would shake things up in a stale wearables market by doing something unique with its form factor. Instead, I found myself with a larger-than-life display on my wrist with nothing to show on it.

I’m still glad something like the Nubia Watch exists; we need more innovation in the wearables market. If anything, it showed me that you need good software or else your hardware goes to waste, no matter how inventive it might be.

The Nubia Watch can be purchased for about $220 from the Nubia website.

0

Oppo on Thursday announced its 2021 flagship smartphone, the Find X3 Pro. A sleek and powerful phone, it packs quite a punch in the hardware department. Additionally, it features an interesting design choice as it pertains to the rear.

The first thing you’ll likely notice about the Find X3 Pro is its camera bump on the rear. It seems to stretch or pull away from teh back in a way that calls to mind mercury or the T-1000’s liquid metal body.

Rounding things out are a 13-megapixel telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom, and a front-facing 32-megapixel selfie camera.

The Find X3 Proโ€™s display is a big one at 6.7-inches and it features an incredibly high resolution (3216 x 1440) and peak brightness of 1,300 nits. Moreover, this 10-bit panel can display more than one billion colors and the 120Hz refresh rate means buttery smooth motion.

Mobvoi launches TicWatch Pro S for sports lovers

0

Mobvoi this week announced its TicWatch Pro S, a smartwatch that features some of the standout features of its TicWatch line, including the โ€œDual Displayโ€ which is an always-on LCD over an AMOLED screen.

Priced for about $40 less than the Pro 3 at $260, it’s not exactly a refresh on an existing model so much as a more affordable option in the Mobvoi portfolio.

For instance, the Pro S houses the aging processor that is the Qualcomm Snadragon 2100 processor. Around since 2016, it’s two generations behind what is available today. In short, that could lead to a less than desirable user experience.

Just slightly thicker than the Pro 3, it’s also a smidge narrower, but comes with a smaller battery. If there’s one area where Wear OS devices could do better, it’s the battery life. Going smaller, and with a less powerful process is taking a step back in time.

Other specifications in the TicWatch Pro S include 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, NFC, and Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity. It’s not all a backwards move in effort to lower the price as that’s twice the storage capacity. Also worth noting, the wearable is IP68 water-resistant.

On the software front, the watch has upgrades for optimized fitness, sleep, and health tracking with a few additions.

  • TicExercise 3.0: introduces a running lap counter, an upgraded heart rate range indicator, an updated UI, and Vo2 Max (maximal oxygen consumption) tracking during outdoor runs
  • TicSleep 2.0: now includes weekly sleep reports, and sleep advice. Whilst also supported in Essential Mode to save battery life and to prevent the watch face from lighting up and disturbing your slumber.

The TicWatch Pro S is available today in the US, UK, and Europe for $259.99 from Mobvoiโ€™s site and Amazon.

How to unblock YouTube while in China

0

In 2009 China has come to a decision to block several services like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter due to the content, which was found as inappropriate and untrue by the countryโ€™s government. The censorship that has been a part of Chinaโ€™s governmental politics for more than 11 years now is a real struggle for those who come to visit the country.

Some people are aware of the fact that the majority of world-famous services are blocked in China, but there is also quite a lot of people who get unpleasantly surprised with the news that they wonโ€™t be able to access their favorite social networks and services during their stay in China. And if you are used to watch football highlights on YouTube, you may watch highlights videos Buaksib as an alternative.

As to every situation, there is a solution to this one. A VPN is a secure and fast tool that can easily help you bypass bans in terms of internet use. Choosing the right VPN might seem a little difficult, but we have a bunch of the best options with which you will be able to enjoy your favorite YouTube content while in China. You can also check Play Pulse for latest YouTuber streamers ratings and charts.

How does the VPN work?

A Virtual Private Network works by establishing a secure connection between your device and the server you choose. Your current IP address switches to the one that the server provides and you can easily avoid bans, since your internet activity canโ€™t be tracked.

Itโ€™s not rocket science. Having chosen one of the VPNs from the list, all you have to do is download it on your device and then among the countries given, choose the one where YouTube is not blocked. You can never go wrong with connecting to the USA server, because most services work there. Thatโ€™s pretty much all, now you can watch YouTube without any problems.

Why choose VPN?

Along with being the number one tool for bypassing restrictions in the countries where such issues exist, it will also make your internet activity private as it should be.

Internet privacy is questionable nowadays and if you want to keep your data safe and your activity untracked, VPN is all you need. If you get a VPN to access geo-restricted content, also keep in mind that itโ€™s working in so many more beneficial directions other than that. Apart from granting the access to blocked services, you also get a freedom of use.

Free or paid VPN?

The choice depends on your personal preferences and budget. The biggest difference between paid and free VPN lies in the safety of your personal information and the ads, which some people canโ€™t stand.

Frankly speaking, most paid VPNs are pretty budget-friendly and by paying several dollars a month you get access to almost every restricted website and also stay invisible while surfing the web.ย If you only need VPN for short stay in China, buying a subscription may not be necessary, but if you are planning to use it more than that, paid VPNs will offer higher quality services and data safety.
