OnePlus 9 flagship series launches with 50-megapixel wide camera

0

OnePlus on Tuesday announced its 2021 flagship handsets, the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. Available starting from April 2, the phones are priced as low as $729 and $969, respectively.

Both phone feature the Hasselblad Camera for Mobile tech which promises more accurate and natural colors in photos. Moreover, they have a Hasselblad Pro Mode which lets picture takers capture 12-bit RAW content for post-processing. As we recently learned, the phone maker and camera giant have established a three-year partnership which will ultimately transition to phone sensors and optics.

The two phones run Android 11 with OnePlus’s custom touches. Known as OxygenOS, it’s largely centered around extra customization and user-defined features.

OnePlus 9

The OnePlus 9 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor with sub-6 GHz 5G support, and comes with 8GB/12GB memory options. Storage is pegged at 128GB and 256GB.

Digging deeper for a moment, the memory is LPDDR5 RAM and the internal storage is UFS 3.1, which means incredibly fast and buttery smooth performance. It’s nothing but top-tier stuff for OnePlus.

The display is a 6.55-inch FHD+ screen with 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ tech, so games will look incredible. A 4,500mAh battery is tucked inside with support for up to 65T fast charging and 15W wireless charging.

The brightness of the OnePlus 9โ€™s display can go up to 1,100 nits with HDR10+ certification, to improve your experience when watching HDR videos. It is equipped with two ambient light sensors with 8,192 levels of brightness for smoother automatic brightness control. Comfort Tone also adjusts the color temperature of the display to match your environment for a more comfortable reading experience.

For cameras, the OnePlus 9 packs a main 48-megapixel shooter which can capture 8K video. The wide-angle camera comes in at 50-megapixels and features a “Freeform” lens that reduces edge distortion and that slight curve that plagues such shots.

That wide angle camera pulls double duty as a macro camera while the monochrome camera handles detailed and layered black and white photos.

Other specifications worth bragging about include a front-facing 16-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi 6 support, Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity, stereo speakers, NFC, and an in-display fingerprint reader.

Available in Winter Mist (purple) and Astral Black, the OnePlus 9 is constructed from fiberglass-reinforced polymer.

OnePlus 9 Pro

The OnePlus 9 Pro takes everything in the standard model and tweaks it in a number of areas. It starts with its overall design, which is built from aluminum and offers IP68 water resistance.

Slightly larger at 6.7-inches, the display is also upgraded to a QHD+ resolution and features a “Fluid Display 2.0” technology. Low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) technology, which OnePlus says is the “most advanced backplane technology” used in high-end OLED screens will automatically adjust the refresh rate from 120Hz down to 1Hz, depending on the need, ensuring maximum battery life.

As for its cameras, the main 48-megapixel sensor is a custom-designed IMX789 sensor, co-developed with Sony, and features optical image stabilization (OIS). The 50-megapixel wide camera is also present, however an 8-megapixel 3.3x telephoto camera has been added and also offers OIS. The 9 Pro also features laser focusing and an extra microphone for audio zoom when shooting video.

Rounding things out, the OnePlus 9 Pro supports mmWave 5G and up to 50W fast wireless charging. The OnePlus 9 Pro be available in glossy Morning Mist (Silver) and matte Pine Green.

Availability

T-Mobile will offer the OnePlus 9 in the 8GB/128GB version in both colors, and the OnePlus 9 Pro 12GB /256 GB version in Morning Mist (Silver). Both phones are compatible with Verizon’s 4G network; OnePlus is hoping to secure 5G certification with the carrier.

Pre-orders for the phones start March 26 with full availability on April 2 from oneplus.com, T-Mobile, Amazon, Best Buy, and B&H.

BLUETTI EP500/Pro officially launches

0

The EP500 is designed to cover your essential needs during power outages, EP500 is equipped with a monstrous 2000Watt pure sine wave AC inverter and surge up to to 4800W, and the Pro version can provide a continuous power at 3000W. Both are packed with 5100Wh, based on ultra-durable and safe LiFePO4 battery cells with a cycle life of up to 6000 cycles.

Introduction

BLUETTI is aimed to take the energy storage world by surprise with the release of its first home energy storage system series – the EP500 & EP500 Pro. Compared to existing giants like the Powerwall or SonnenCore, the EP500 series had a much smaller 5.1kWh capacity. But with the four smooth-rolling transport wheels, the EP500 is not meant to be a large solar battery mounted on the wall or garage. The BLUETTI EP500 is designed to be a “No Installation Needed”, plug and play powerhouse that can easily be moved to the desired location whenever needed.

Key things to know about the BLUETTI EP500 & EP500 Pro:

Specs

The EP500 is designed to cover your essential needs during power outages, EP500 is equipped with a monstrous 2000Watt pure sine wave AC inverter and surge up to to 4800W, and the Pro version can provide a continuous power at 3000W. Both of them are packed with 5100Wh, based on ultra-durable and safe LiFePO4 battery cells (up to 6,000 charge cycles).

Blazing Fast Charging

The BLUETTI team is dedicated to building an eco-friendly future with renewable energy. Antique gasoline generators, which produce toxic fumes pollution, unbearable noise and consume irreproducible petroleum resources are a thing of the past.

The EP500 is equipped with an advanced MPPT solar inverter. Up to 1200W (2400W for the pro) solar input can charge the 5.1kWh battery pack from 0 to full in less than 5 hours (2.5Hrs for the pro). With BLUETTIโ€™s latest 200W portable solar panel – SP200 you can harness the solar power anywhere you want, at full speed.

Last but not least, the Bluetti EP500 series can also be charged from solar and AC simultaneously, handling up to 1800W (4000W for the pro version) and charging the battery pack at lightning speed.

Size & Weight

The unit is about 180lbs and is just about the size as a normal household air purifier, the EP500 series still can be moved around easily with the help of 4 smooth-rolling wheels.

Compared to the mounted backup power systems like the Tesla Powerwall and LG Chem RESU, the BLUETTI EP500 series features incredible mobility and are even possible to be packed for a road trip.

24/7 Seamless UPS & WiFi Remote Control

An uninterrupted power source (UPS) is an electrical apparatus that provides emergency power to essential loads when the grid goes down. EP500 & EP500 Pro is the key to provide continuous power and to help you get through power outages at ease.

With the BLUETTI EP500, you will never have to face the panic when the power outage occurs, all your data on the computer will be well preserved, your food in the refrigerator will stay cold, and all the lights you need will stay on.

The UPS functions on EP500 series are plug-and-play, all you need to do is connect it to the wall outlets and turn on the UPS Mode. Yet, you can also have much more power by integrating the unit to your home circuit with BLUETTI Home Integration Kit.

To monitor and operate remotely, the BLUETTI EP500 series now supports remote App With their exclusive B-Lynk connection technology, you can easily monitor your EP500โ€™s status and adjust settings whether it is near you or a thousand miles away. No more having to walk to a unit to determine remaining battery or inverter capacity.

Split Phase Bonding

The rated AC inverter output power of 2000/3000 continuous watts is pretty high, but certainly not enough to power all of your electrical appliances. As an emergency energy storage power for the whole family, Bluetti has an option to double the AC output. For higher power loads, Bluetti is releasing its own โ€œSplit Phase Boxโ€ with which users can connect two EP500/Proโ€™s in series, and double the rated power output and capacity. The box will also offer the option of 220/240 volt output to power 240 volt appliances, which means you can now run your home air conditioner, clothes dryer, in-wall Electric Heater and other high power appliances with ease. No need to worry about power outages on hot summer nights or cold, bitter winters anymore.

Delivery & Warranty

The Bluetti team promised to start shipping EP500 in June and EP500 Pro in August, not a short time to deliver, but according to the feedback from their backers in the AC200 campaign, this definitely will be worth waiting for.

To make up for the customer’s long wait, BLUETTI provides a 3-year warranty and lifetime tech support for EP500 & EP500 Pro for their crowdfunding backers. Besides, you can also pay for the extended one-year warranty for $399 or $699 for two, which makes the total warranty time to 5 years top.

The starting price for one EP500 (super early bird perk) is at groundbreaking $2,799 ($0.55/Wh, 30% OFF), and you can save extra $100 by ordering two for $5,399 (31% OFF), that almost 80% the capacity of a Tesla Powerwall2 and at only half the cost.

BLUETTI has released more discounted perks on its Kickstarter campaign – Check it out and claim your BLUETTI power.

Second generation Nest Hub launches with sleep tracking capabilities

0

Google on Tuesday announced that its second generation of Nest Hub smart displays is now available for pre-order. Priced just $99, it closely resembles its predecessor in a number of ways, but leans heavily into sleep tracking, too.

According to Google’s findings, about one in every five Nest Hub has made its way into the bedroom. And why not? They’re a great speaker to have around and the display is perfect for bedside controls of smart home devices.

Understanding that the Nest Hub could be even more valuable in bedroom, the development team set out to add new features for the health and wellness space. Ultimately it arrived at the second generation device with sleep tracking and insight.

The new Nest Hub comes in a variety of colors, including Chalk, Charcoal, Sand, and (new) Mist. Keeping its familiar overall design, it looks right at home in any environment and has the same visual language as its recent Nest Thermostat.

The new unit comes with a handful of new features and sensors, including 50% more bass and, more interestingly, a Soli radar. In essence, it can identify a wide range of motion such as gestures for controlling playback of audio or video.

Diving deeper, the Nest Hub can help keep an eye on your sleeping, determining how long you slept, its respective quality, any snoring or coughing, and more.

According to the Nest team, setting this up is more or less a 90 second process that you’ll only have to do one time. For all practical purposes you lie down on the bed and let it get a baseline reading of you. From there it is able to monitor micro changes in the environment and monitor your sleep without having to physically touch you.

Upon waking in the morning you can have the Nest Hub tell you how things went and offer up ways to improve your sleep. Be it in the form of a wind down routine, earlier bedtime, darker settings, or a cooler environment, these small changes can have life-altering impact. Indeed, the new device has ambient light detector and temperature sensor.

The Nest Hub display can dim in the evening so you’re not distracted by its light; it also gives you touch and voice control over lights and other connected home settings. When you wake in the morning you can use the display to gradually brighten to wake you.

Want to sleep for a few more minutes? Wave your hand and the quick gesture is detected by the Soli chip and snooze is immediately activated.

All of the Sleep Sense features work hand in hand to help create new habits and a healthier lifestyle. Moreover, they’ll tie directly to Google Fit so you can manage things on your phone or wearable. The Sleep Sense features are entirely optional and can be adjusted on the fly.

Just as Helpful in Other Rooms

As great as the second generation Nest Hub is with its health and wellness features, it’s still just has practical in all other rooms. It acts as a digital picture frame, portal to view Nest cameras, a calendar, note pad, and more. And yes, it still allows for casting and streaming of content like Netflix, YouTube TV, and Pandora.

Like other Nest products, the Nest Hub has privacy controls, including the physical microphone toggle on the back and the ability to delete any recordings from a previous period. A simple voice command also lets you enter Guest Mode so that Assistant activity is not tied to your own Google account.

Availability

The second-generation Nest Hub can be preordered online in the US, Canada, U.K., Germany, France and Australia at the Google Store and other retailers starting today for $99.

How to change your keyboard on Android 10

0

From day one, one of the best features in Android has been its open nature. That is to say users are not stuck with the software experience that comes with their phone. Don’t like the phone dialer? Try a new one. Not a fan of how contacts are handled? Install an app.

The keyboard is one of those things that we use all day, every day. If you don’t like the way it works, or find it lacking, you’ll want to replace it with something else.

With the multitude of options out there for Android keyboards on the Google Play Store, you might be tempted in trying some of them out. Should your curiosity be piqued, here is how you can change your keyboard with relative ease on Android 10.

You might already be bored of your daily keyboard on your Android smartphone, or you may want to shift to something better like Gboard. Whatever your preference, here is how you can change your keyboard in a few simple steps!

While the process can vary from one OEM to the next, the main term you are looking for in the phone’s settings is Keyboard. The steps below should take you to the keyboard selection menu.

Changing your keyboard on Android 10

Open up the Settings app on your phone and use its search function to look for Language & Input. For some OEMs the “&” could be an “and”. If you are going through the settings manually, you may find it tucked behind something like “Input”.

In the case of OnePlus, the Input & Language menu is located under the “System” section first. As such, using the search feature, if available, is the easiest and fastest way.

Look for the option of Default Keyboard, Virtual Keyboard, On-screen keyboard, etc. This is again an option that will vary from one to the next, but the keyword here is Keyboard.

From here, you can pick and choose your keyboard of choice. By default, you will have manufacturer default keyboards installed. E.g. Xiaomi Keyboard, Samsung Keyboard, etc. My personal pick is Gboard as it’s the official Google Keyboard and is easy to type on.

Where do I Find New Keyboards?

Keyboards, much like apps and games, are found in the Google Play Store. You can head there and search for the term “keyboard” and pull up a ton of great results.

While you might consider other keyboard options because of the way they look or the features they promise, make sure that is one you can trust but is also safe.

There has been a significant rise in the number of malware apps on the Google Play Store and most of the time these keyboards could very well be disguised as Keyloggers without your knowledge.

As enticing as a new keyboard could look, be sure to read reviews and see if its safe to use. Find out if other people are saying anything that sounds suspicious or which might give you pause.

Huawei to charge royalties on 5G patents

0

Huawei’s position in the global market and moreso in the United States has been rocky to say the least. Now, however, the company has a way to maintain and grow its position.

If you don’t know much about Huawei and how things have been going for them, here’s a quick rundown: In 2019, Huawei was added to the United States Department of Commerce’s entity list, which essentially marks them as a company potentially in league with foreign governments that can therefore not be trusted. This led to doubts concerning whether Huawei could still run the Android operating system. Blow after blow has been dealt, with chip supplies to Huawei being cut off, and 5G equipment being banned and removed from telecomms networks in both the United States and abroad. Huawei ended the fourth quarter of 2020 with a 41.1% decline in sales over the previous year.

To mitigate these losses, Huawei has tried to break into other markets such as cars, wearables, laptops, and tablets, in addition to selling off their Honor sub-brand. Now, Huawei wants their royalties, namely from Apple and Samsung. Now, you might be confused, wondering what Apple and Samsung would owe Huawei as the former especially tries to keep all of their tech development in-house. As Huawei is a patent owner on many essential 5G technologies, they can reasonably charge companies access to those patents, which is necessary for developing 5G devices.

Huawei is in negotiations with Apple and Samsung concerning royalty rates, but the company plans to collect between $1.2 and $1.3 billion dollars in royalties from the companies. In order to keep their customers, Huawei will also charge lower rates for patent access than companies such as Qualcomm, Ericsson, and Nokia, with a cap of $2.5 per phone.

Proscenic P11 cordless handheld vacuum review

0

Not too long ago I reviewed the Proscenic M7 Pro Robot Vacuum. Since the review I have found it has done a fine job keeping the floors neat and tidy. However, there are some areas where a robovac can’t quite get the job done. Behind furniture, for example, or the cobwebs in corners, or the stairs.

For those hard-to-reach areas, you’re going to need a vacuum that’s more flexible. Enter the Proscenic P11 Cordless Vacuum, which is the perfect supplement to its robovac counterpart.

Design

The Proscenic P11 Cordless Vacuum uses a familiar design to many other modern handheld vacuums. It features a handle with a trigger to turn it on or off, a touchscreen to adjust the settings, an easy to empty canister, and several attachments.

The main attachment is a 2-in-1 vacuum cleaner head, which includes a detachable mop and LED lights on the front. Other cleaning attachments include, a round brush, crevice tool, and a mini-motorized head perfect for furniture or stairs. Most of these can be attached to the P11 itself for cleaning in tight quarters, or connected via the extension tube for cleaning floors or hard-to-reach areas.

When it comes to storing the Proscenic P11, with a little effort you can get it to stand upright. However, the most convenient way to store it would be to use the included wall mounting bracket. It not only holds the P11 upright and out of the way, it also allows for you to charge it.

My biggest criticism with the design of the P11 Cordless Vacuum is the handle. Due to how small it is, you either have to keep your finger pressed down on the trigger the entire time, or scrunch your fingers up to grip the handle under the trigger. Otherwise, you’re accidentally turning it off and on over and over.

How well does it clean?

The Proscenic P11 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner boasts a 450W brushless motor with up to 25000Pa of suction power. What that means for you is, very clean floors. While using the P11 for the past few weeks, I’ve been impressed with how spotless it has kept my floors.

Furthermore, I’ve been able to get into all the nooks and crannies the robovac always misses, making my home the cleanest it has been in months.

If that wasn’t good enough, the removable mopping attachment also does a fantastic job of cleaning hardwood and linoleum floors. Much better than any robovac with a mopping attachment has done. I’ve always been disappointed with the mopping function on those, but with the P11, you can apply more pressure, and that’s enough to get up all but the most stubborn of spots.

The only downside is when the cleaning is over, and you need to empty the canister. The P11’s dust bin has more parts than any robovac I’ve used, and it can be a little cumbersome to disassemble and empty out.

Battery Life

During my time with the Proscenic P11 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner, I found I could get around 45 minutes of use with the default auto power setting. That was plenty of time for me to vacuum the entire first floor of the house. However, if I set the P11 to maximum power, then it would only last close to 20 minutes.

That’s a big difference, and I wish it could last longer at the highest power setting. Of course, that would come at the cost of using a larger heavier battery, making the P11 less manageable to use.

Overall, I think the battery will give you enough power to clean most messes around the house. However, I am disappointed to report that there is currently no replacement battery offered for the P11. Just something to consider while shopping around.

Final Thoughts

Originally, I got a robovac because I was tired of lugging around the big bulky vacuum each week. While robovacs have done wonders by keeping my floors clean with minimal effort from me, they also miss a lot of areas.

For those times when I need to get into hard-to-reach areas or mop my floor, the Proscenic P11 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner is the perfect companion. At the time of writing, the P11 even has a $40 off coupon if you buy from Amazon, knocking the total price down to $200. That’s a great price for this vacuum, I only hope Proscenic begins selling replacement batteries soon, because that would make the P11 even more convenient to use.

Hot to manage “Night mode” on Android 10

0

Night mode is a newer feature found in Android 10 that helps reduce the strain of blue light on your eyes. Moreover, it can also help you sleep by adjusting the light from your phone to emit proper color temperature and lightness.

As many of you know by now, phone screens are full of red, green, and blue light. A well-lit screen is a necessity during work hours as you rely on the brightness and display. But what about when it’s later in the day, or closer to bedtime? Night Mode helps your eyes relax in darker environments, particularly when indoors.

The best use of Night Mode is when you are lying in bed or sitting in a dark room, catching up on emails, social media, or messages. The normal light from your phone, particularly in dark environments, can be bad for your eyes and lead to sleep trouble in sleep.

Night Mode helps reduce the presence of blue light, making the screen color something more friendly to your eyes. It also helps in falling asleep faster.

Managing Night Mode on Android

When managing Night Mode, the two main settings you’re looking at are Color Temperature, and Lightness.

Color Temperature varies from Bright (your phones default) to Warmest, which gives the phone a near brown tint at the fullest setting. The warmer the color, the lesser the blue light.

Lightness deals with the amount of backlight your phone is giving to text. At its default, text will be sharp and bright, but at its fullest, text is eligible enough to read but also soft on the eyes.

The best way to access Night Mode on your phone is through the Notifications bar but you can go to your settings and search for it with the keyword of Night Mode.

When you find Night Mode on your phone, go into its settings and customize it to your preference.

From here, you have a few settings at your use.

First, You can toggle it on manually. This means while you can decide when you want to turn it on, you will also have to turn it back off when you use the phone in daytime.

Second, You can enable the phone to turn Night Mode off at sunrise, and turn back on automatically at sunset. If you prefer automation, this could be the feature you’re looking for.

Lastly, setting your own schedule, you can choose the time that Night Mode turns on and turns off.

With that, we have managed Night Mode on your Android 10 smartphone.
