Mediatek became largest chipset vendor in 2020

Mediatek is a Taiwanese chipset vendor that usually has the reputation of being a cheaper alternative to Qualcomm chips. For computer people, think about an Intel vs AMD type situation. They’ve usually fallen by the wayside in favor of Qualcomm, but as of last year, they beat out Qualcomm by about 30 million units, increasing their shipments in total by about 120 million from 2019.

This victory comes from a few different things, one of the most notable changes being the fact that Huawei can no longer buy chips from the United States, forcing them to look a little closer to home. Besides Huawei, other phone makers such as Xiaomi and Samsung saw an almost 200% growth in their shipments of Mediatek phones. Another big contributor to this change is the fact that 2020 saw a lot of folks needing cheaper options for phones due to the recession caused by COVID, giving Mediatek a firm foothold in the low and mid-range.

Analysts expect this lead to continue as Huawei and the now-independent Honor seek chip supplies in 2021 as well as the growth of emerging phone markets, though I am interested to see if this lead continues once the general global economy begins to recover. However, Mediatek has also began to develop their Dimensity 1000 series, bringing them into the flagship and upper mid-range phones, even making it into last year’s LG Velvet at T-Mobile.

Ecovacs Deebot N8 Pro+ review

Not too long ago I had the pleasure of reviewing the Deebot Ozmo T8 robovac from Ecovacs. Now, the smart home appliance brand is back at it with two brand-new models, dubbed the Deebot N8+ and Deebot N8 Pro+. Both models include the auto-empty station by default and are exclusively available from Amazon. Fortunately, Ecovacs was nice enough to send one out to us for review just in time for the launch.

User Experience

Setting up the Deebot N8 Pro+ was a breeze. Once I got the auto-empty station and bot unpacked and charged up, all that was left was to open the app and have it map the house. The little robovac wandered around quite a bit during this phase, but that’s entirely normal, and it had the first floor mapped within an hour.

One important step you’ll want to take though, is enabling auto updating of the firmware in the settings of the app. I’m not entirely sure why this isn’t on by default, but it can be accessed by tapping on the three-dot menu in the upper right-hand corner of the app. Then select Additional Settings, choose About Deebot, tap on Firmware Version, and toggle on Automatic update. This should ensure you keep the N8 Pro+ up to date with all the latest software.

The Deebot N8 Pro+ includes one of Ecovacs’s signature features, True Detect. With True Detect, the N8 Pro+ can identify objects as small as 2mm, such as pens, batteries, or charging cables from up to 32ft. away using its LiDAR laser 3D scanning technology. This is extremely helpful in aiding the little bot to avoid these objects.

If you’ve ever owned a robovac before and found it tangled in power cords or had it drag a lamp into the floor as I have, then this is a godsend.

Unfortunately, this valuable feature can also have its drawbacks. In my case, my home has some irregular tile flooring which often confuses the N8 Pro+ and causes it to skip rooms. Additionally, I ran into an issue where it got stuck between some furniture a couple of times.

If you happen to run into any issues such as these, be aware that simply toggling off True Detect can clear everything up. That does mean you’ll lose the benefit of the 3D scanning technology though, and you’ll need to create some virtual barriers to help avoid any cables.

A defining feature of the new Deebot N8 lineup from Ecovacs is the included auto-empty station. Many robovacs require that you purchase the auto-empty station separately, but with this Amazon exclusive package, Ecovacs bundles it in by default.

Having the auto-empty station makes disposing of all the dirt and debris the N8+ and N8 Pro+ pick up super convenient. Some things to note though, the auto-empty station is incredibly loud when emptying the dust bin, and you’ll have to buy replacement bags, which can get a little pricey.

App

One of my favorite things about the Ecovacs lineup of robovacs is the easy-to-use app that’s packed full of features. After using some competitors, I can say Ecovacs does a fantastic job of providing tons of features while making the app easy to navigate and understand.

The sheer number of features can be a little overwhelming, but here are some of my favorites. For starters, the virtual barriers, by using these you can set up areas in the house you want to be avoided. For example, rooms with rugs it can get hung up on, or areas with power cables or other items that can trip up the N8 Pro+.

There’s also an option to program in what order you want your home cleaned. So if you’re like me, and want the rooms cleaned in a certain sequence, Ecovacs has your back. Along with options to manually assign which power level to use in each room, and whether or not to run it once or twice. Otherwise, the N8 Pro+ will automatically adjust its power levels based on the type of flooring it detects.

Additionally, the Deebot N8 Pro+ allows you to clean multiple floors in your home, while also being able to stop and charge when the battery gets low, only to pick up where it left off thanks to the continuous cleaning function.

How Well Does it Clean?

Ecovacs says the Deebot N8 Pro+ includes a powerful motor with up to 2,600Pa of suction. As your typical consumer, I’m not quite sure what that means, but I can tell you that the N8 Pro+ certainly did a good job of cleaning the floors. I never noticed any leftover debris after running it, and it always left the carpet with that nice cushy fluffed-up feeling.

However, when it came to mopping, I wasn’t nearly as impressed by the N8 Pro+ as I was by its vacuuming prowess. While the Deebot N8 Pro+ includes a mopping attachment, it’s really more akin to lightly dragging a damp cloth over the floor. This works perfectly for cleaning up residual dust off of hardwood, linoleum, or tile flooring.

Still, it’s not exactly what I would call “mopping.” If there are any sort of spots on your kitchen floors, then you’re going to need to break out a real mop to do some scrubbing.

Battery Life

Ecovacs rates the N8 Pro+ for 110 minutes of runtime. That’s nearly two hours long, and considering it was able to finish the first floor of my home in a little under an hour, it was plenty.

I have no doubt that it will be able to clean the average or even above-average home with a full charge without issue. Even if it does run out of juice before it finishes, the continuous cleaning mode ensures it will pick up where it left off and no space will go uncleaned.

Final Thoughts

The Ecovacs Deebot N8 Pro+ is the whole package. It vacuums, it mops, it empties itself, and it includes advanced features with an easy-to-use app. Just be aware that the True Detect feature can cause some hiccups, and you can save yourself $100 if you choose to buy the N8+ model instead.

It’s the same great robovac with slightly less suction power and no True Detect. With a retail price of $699, the downgrade from the N8 Pro+ might be worth it to save a little money for some of you. However, right now you can save an additional $50 off the retail price when you apply the coupon on the Amazon page. 

Some other things to note, the mopping feature won’t replace your old-fashioned stick mop for spots and stains, and the included auto-empty station is loud with replacement bags that can get pricey.

Other than that, the Deebot N8 Pro+ is an incredible little robovac that helps keep your home tidy, while also preventing you from having to remember to empty the dustbin and making a mess.

Managing your Bluetooth settings on Android 10

First and foremost, you should name your Bluetooth device (phone). You can go with something clever, or you can just keep it simple like I have.

In the early years of transferring data between phones, one would have to use the IR Sensor in their phones and keep the phones in close proximity amongst each other. However, Bluetooth eliminated the need of that and made everything wireless. This is still used today but has significantly decreased with the popularity of messaging apps and NFC making the process even more efficient.

You can still send data between phones using Bluetooth, and it helps in sending the content as is without decreasing the size or the quality. This is what popular messaging apps like WhatsApp do to speed up the transfer.

How to transfer files using Bluetooth

First make sure your phone is discoverable. This can vary from one OEM to the next, but its normally a toggle or an option in the form of On/Off.

Scan for the device you wish to pair with and tap on it. You will both see an on-screen prompt on your respective devices. Accept the request by tapping on Pair.

From there, simply choose the content you wish to share. This is where you would send anything you wish to send in its original quality such as photos or videos. Bluetooth transfer helps maintain the size and quality of whatever you are sending.

Aside from transferring data between files, Bluetooth is also used to connect to your digital wearables. Whether these are fitness bands, smartwatches, wireless keyboards or mice in the case of tablets, or wireless music accessories (headphones, earphones, speakers, etc.).

To connect to them, simply find out how to put the device in pairing mode until it shows up in your Bluetooth device list (this should be in the device’s instructions or manual). Once it shows up, tap on it, confirm the pairing request, and you are all set to use it.

With certain Bluetooth accessories, you can tap on them in the Bluetooth menu to access more advanced settings for you to toggle on/off. In this case, it is Qualcomm aptX audio. Here you can also adjust other permissions for connected devices specifically if you wish to restrict or allow permissions.

While an app will handle the Bluetooth sync for these peripherals for you autonomously, you can follow the above steps to pair a smartwatch manually by the Bluetooth menu.

A few basic security measures you can exercise with Bluetooth are as follows:

  • Always remove a device from your transfer list if it is a one-time transfer. That way your menu won’t be bloated with an excess of devices.
  • Never pair with devices that you don’t trust. Always make sure that the Pairing Code matches both phone screens before initiating any transfer.
  • Keep your Discoverable option toggled or set to Off. This will stop random devices from connecting to your devices. Only turn it on when you need it.

T-Mobile and Google expand partnership

Today, T-Mobile has announced a deep partnership with Google across various experiences, including changes in messaging, phone backup, TV, and phone availability.

Phone Availability

One of the biggest changes is the phones you might be seeing when shopping at T-Mobile. The Uncarrier plans to carry more Pixel and Android devices. T-Mobile wants to showcase the Pixel phones to be able to provide a phone that provides security, stability, and a strong user experience and also showcase the power of 5G.

Messaging

Last year, T-Mobile gave the ability for their users to use RCS features on Google Messages. Now, the Uncarrier plans to use Google’s Messages app as the default messaging app on all T-Mobile Android devices. This provides the advanced messaging capabilities that come with RCS, such as the ability to send better photos and videos, chats no matter what network your on, read reports, and reactions.

T-Mobile and Google also plan to further expand RCS capabilities, allowing for better commerce, support, and communication.

TV

T-Mobile is shutting down their TVision service in favor of YouTube TV. Current TVision Live subscribers will get their first month of YouTube TV for free if they register by June 30. T-Mobile customers can also get $10 off YouTube TV at $54.99 a month starting on April 6

Phone Backup

T-Mobile has also brought in Google One as the default backup service on their phones.

All of these changes bring T-Mobile and Google closer together and hopefully will create a more streamlined Android experience to T-Mobile users.

Xiaomi on Monday announced its latest smartphones in the form of the Mi 11 Ultra, Mi 11 Lite 5G, and Mi 11 Lite 4G. As one might expect the Ultra is the top-tier stuff outright insane specifications and features, while the others are a more budgeted approach to its 2021 offerings.

Let’s jump right into the main specifications for each, shall we?

Mi 11 Ultra

The Mi 11 Ultra comes with a 6.81-inch AMOLED display at 3200 x 1440 resolution and features a 120Hz refresh rate and 480Hz touch sampling rate. With Dolby Vision, HDR10, and a 360-defgree ambient light sensor it is among the most well-rounded on the market and all of it is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.

A Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor powers the show and is complemented by 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage.

The triple camera configuration consists of a 50-megapixel wide angle camera, 48-megapixel ultra-wide (128 degree) camera, and 48-megapixel telephoto camera. All three boast a number of great features, shooting modes, and high-end details such as incredibly high 120x zoom. A 20-megapixel camera is located around front.

It’s worth noting here that the Mi 11 Ultra has a rather unconventional design to the rear camera. In fact, it’s module has a second screen that measures 1.1-inch which is used for notifications, alerts, and selfie previews.

The 5,000mAh battery is good for about two days of usage and supports 67W wired turbo charging as well as 67W wireless turbo charging. Yep, that’s right – a wireless charge that’s faster than pretty much anything you’ll find even with a cable. It also supports 10W reverse charging.

The 5G phone comes in Ceramic Black and Ceramic White colors and supports a whole range of networks and bands.

Mi 11 Lite 5G and Mi 11 Lite (4G)

Powered by Android 11 with the custom MIUI 12 interface, the Mi 11 Lite offers up a 6.55-inch display with 2400 x 1080 resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate as well as a triple-camera system.

Internally, the 5G phone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 780 processor while the 4G model has a 732G chipset. As for memory and storage, it breaks down as so:

Lite 5G: 6GB+128GB, 8GB+128GB (UFS 2.2 + LPDDR4X)
Lite 4G: 6GB+64GB, 6GB+128GB (UFS 2.2 + LPDDR4X)

As for the cameras, the rear of the handset features a 64-megapixel main shooter as well as an 8-megapixel ultra-wide and 5-megapixel telephoto cameras.

Mi 11 Lite (4G)

When it comes to batteries, the Mi 11 Lite 4G packs a 4,250mAh power source with support for up to 33W fast charging. Other notable details include Bluetooth 5.1, a 3.5mm headphone jack, dual speakers, and a fingerprint sensor built into the power button.
