Lockly Vision doorbell camera smart lock review

0

One of the best parts about having a connected home is the ability to grow and evolve the setup. Whereas a lot of people start out with a simple smart speaker or a few light bulbs, others might go with a security system. From there one could mix in a few smart displays, a bit of automation, and anything else that speaks to them.

A trend that slowly emerged over the last few years is the wireless connectivity for things like floodlights, cameras, and video doorbells. That is to say you can add them to your home or apartment without having to physically hard-wire them.

This has been great for renters, particularly because they don’t have to worry about getting a landlord’s permission. Moreover, someone with a storage unit could place a battery-powered camera inside their space, only having to charge it once every few months.

We’ve tested a variety of smart deadbolts and video doorbells over the years, but have not had the chance to do an all-in-one experience. The Lockly Vision ($399.99) is just that, a lock that features a touch-screen keypad, a fingerprint reader, and keyed cylinder as well as a video doorbell. In addition to these hardware details, it also supports your Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa commands.

Design and Features

The Lockly Vision is a full lock assembly that comes with interior and exterior covers, a deadbolt w/strike plate, mounting plate, door sensor, keys, batteries, and a smattering of hardware. Moreover, it comes with an installation guide, quick start manual, and paperwork.

Our review unit is the same Satin Nickel finish that we had in our Secure Pro we reviewed some time back. But unlike its older counterpart, this one has more rounded design with a bit of a capsule-like shape.

Lockly Vision has a 2.5-inch (diagonal) capacitive touch screen on the front and a biometric 3D fingerprint reader on its right hand side. Behind a round metal protective cover is where you’d insert a traditional key. But who wants to do that in 2021?

The doorbell housed in the unit is equipped with a 720 pixel video camera with a 150-degree field of view.

Installation and Setup

When you open the box and take out all of the parts, accessories, and instructions it may feel a tad overwhelming. Not to worry, though, as the actual installation is not all that complicated.

If you’ve ever installed a deadbolt, you’re already halfway familiar with things. The rest of it, which is guided nicely via manual, is straightforward and hard to mess up.

Once in place you can walk through the app and configure your settings. We appreciate that Lockly provides a wide array of personalization options that make it feel unique and individualized. The defaults are great, but we invite readers to play around a bit and see what can be done.

The mobile app lets users create permanent and/or temporary access codes, register fingerprints, and create offline access codes which can be share verbally or via email.

The Vision comes with a hub to connect to your homeโ€™s Wi-Fi; it’s relatively small at 0.5 x 4.4 x 3.9 inches. We prefer this over the Lockly Secure Pro extra component that needs to plugged into a wall outlet somewhere between the router and the door. If anything, it’s always connected to the network.

Performance and Usage

Once youโ€™ve set up your Lockly Vision itโ€™s really simple to manage access to your door. The initial setup process will walk you through a few steps to help create users with PIN codes or fingerprints.

You can also add users for temporary access or one-time entry. Whether youโ€™re doing this at startup or later, itโ€™s a great way to give parents, neighbors, or trusted friends a code that lets them into your home.

We really like that we donโ€™t have to be at home and paired with the deadbolt in order to create a code. Find yourself at a wedding reception and needing someone to help feed your pets or let them outside? Create a code and share it with someone.

In addition to the fingerprint reader and the number pad you can also use your phone to unlock the door. Oh, and donโ€™t forget that traditional, physical key. Yeah, those still work, too.

The camera does not support night vision nor does it automatically wake upon detecting someone. That could be a deal-breaker for some users and itโ€™s worth pointing out.

Along those lines, you do have the option to capture video of a person entering a code. Giving a neighbor a code to let him come water your plants while on vacation? You can automatically record video of them entering the code and youโ€™ll know whether they bring a friend along with them.

The doorbell will sound a chime and push alerts to your handset whenever the button is pressed, recording video of the event and storing it on the included microSD card.

If youโ€™d like to view your camera in real time, itโ€™s a simple thing to do directly from the Lockly app. Moreover, you can also communicate with the doorbell/deadbolt using its built-in microphone and speaker.

For what it’s worth, we have a storm door that protects the main door so our doorbell actually shows a door frame when we log in to view it live. But, it does a good job recording video when someone is entering a guest code.

The Vision is powered by eight included AA batteries; at the bottom of the lock is a pair of terminals that you can use to jump-start the lock in the event your batteries die. Not to worry, though, you wonโ€™t be hung out to dry because the app gives you an indicator of the amount of charge left and youโ€™re realistically looking at changing them out maybe once per year.

The Visionโ€™s smart lock performance was generally excellent in our testing. The fingerprint scanner always recognizes fingerprints and we find the touch-screen pad responsive. The Auto-Lock feature, which we don’t often use, works nicely as do the Google Assistant commands.

The cameraโ€™s performance was a little more mixed, largely because of the storm door. Video was grainy, especially in evenings and late nights. However, we do appreciate the audio quality from the videos and the near real-time for chatting.

Conclusion

The Lockly Vision Doorbell Camera Smart Lockโ€™s offers a variety of ways to lock and unlock your door. It’s highly customizable and allows for on-the-fly access to the lock or to generate access codes. As a smart deadbolt we’re big fans of this one.

Setup is easy, integration with smart assistants is appreciated, and we like the generally robust app experience.

As for the doorbell and camera part, they work just fine, but we’d like a higher resolution or night vision capability. If you have a storm door or something that would potentially obscure the video, we suggest saving the (~$120) money and opting for the Secure Pro. Motion detection would also be a great addition, too, especially since other smart doorbells offer the feature.

The Lockly Vision comes with a limited 5-Year Mechanical & Finish Warranty and a 2-Year Electronics Warranty, backed by lifetime technical support.

This app can turn everything you need to read into audio

0

When youโ€™re young, you have more time on your hands because there are fewer things you need to do, which leaves plenty of room for things you want to do. As we spend more time in the professional world, there is less time for things outside of it. With the forced move to working from home, you have to spend even more time just to communicate, whether itโ€™s through long emails, virtual meetings, or detailed reports you have to review. Just as technology made working from home possible, now it can make it more efficient, too. Elocance is an app that can save you time and strain on your eyes by turning web articles, documents, long emails, and more into audio that you can listen to.

If youโ€™re looking for ways to fine-tune your day for productivity, then save the time youโ€™d spend reading long documents and listen to them instead. Elocance can help you work, learn, and live efficiently in ways that were unavailable before. Listen to that 12-page email while you eat lunch. Enter data into a spreadsheet while listening to a book youโ€™ve been wanting to read.

Beyond saving you time, Elocance will help you learn and retain information more effectively. People learn better by varying how they acquire knowledge. If you are spending more time than ever reading and working to retain information from so many different visual sources, then listening to it for a change will help you commit that information to memory.

By turning any text into audio, a busy person can condense their work and boost their productivity immensely, and you donโ€™t have to continuously add new things to Elocance to play for you, wasting your time. Instead, Elocance can easily create playlists of your content to give you an audio library of information you can hear rather than read. Youโ€™ll be able to organize these playlists, listening to all your unread emails in a row as easily as youโ€™d be able to hear a few chapters from a book youโ€™ve been wanting to read.

The breaks you give yourself to rest your eyes from hours on Zoom can now be spent still engaging with useful, practical information, while giving you a moment to recharge before you jump back into your work. With Elocance, you can learn to code while walking your dog, or research some awesome new products while you cook dinner.

Elocance is a new way to make your life more efficient. Normally $86.99 for a yearly subscription, now you can get Elocance for 50% off if you use the coupon code ELO#2@21. Hack your productivity and listen to your work with one app.

Lepow Portable Monitor review

0

A second monitor is something you may have never thought about purchasing before. However, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve been living a new world. Many of us have switched to working from home for the first time and we’re looking for ways to be more productive.

As it turns out, a second monitor is one of the most effective tools to increase productivity. They are great for keeping your digital workspace more organized by offering increased screen real estate and they’re perfect for Zoom calls.

Thankfully, Lepow was nice enough to send out its highly-rated portable monitor so I could experience this for myself.

Design

The Lepow Portable Monitor offers 15.6 inches of additional screen real estate with a resolution of 1080p. That’s large enough to be useful without being too heavy for when you’re on the go.

It features minimal bezels along three of its sides which helps keep it compact for traveling. The back is metal and includes magnets for the bundled cover to attach to. If you’d like, the cover can be removed entirely if you plan on leaving it in one spot, but the protective cover also doubles as a handy stand whether you plan on moving it around or not.

Along the right side, you’ll find the power button, USB-C power port, and a rocker switch for adjusting settings. It’s important to note that the USB-C port on this side is for power only, and the rocker switch can be pressed in to help select settings in the menu.

The USB-C port on the left side is for the transmission of audio and video. It can also accept power if you connect it to a compatible device allowing you to run the monitor entirely off of one cable. I was able to do this with my Windows laptop.

If your device doesn’t support video over USB-C, then no worries, the Lepow Portable Monitor also includes a mini HDMI port on the left side. Now, an HDMI to mini HDMI cable isn’t all that common, but fear not, because one comes in the box.

While the Lepow Portable Monitor is capable of displaying video, it can also provide audio through its two speakers and headphone jack. This makes it perfect for using as your main display for watching movies or playing games as well as a secondary monitor.

Overall, the Lepow Portable Monitor packs a lot into its slim 0.3-inch body and only weighs 1.7lbs. This makes it easy to transport, whether you’re moving it around the house or taking it with you on the go.

What’s in the box?

Inside of the box, you’ll find a USB-C to USB-C cable, HDMI to Mini HDMI cable, a USB-A to USB-C power cable, and a power brick. Essentially, every cable you could need with this portable monitor, so don’t worry about having to pick up anything extra to get it all set up.

User Experience

Over the past few weeks, I have tested out the Lepow Portable Monitor with my Windows Laptop, HP Chromebook X2, Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, Nintendo Switch, and PS4 Pro. In every instance, the monitor functioned without issue.

However, it is important to note that I was required to use a dedicated power source in all of these instances except with my Windows Laptop. It would technically work without an external power source with my phone as well, but I found it to be a little wonky when using it without one.

One of the best parts about the Lepow Portable Monitor is the fact that it is truly portable. I could easily run this off one of my power banks when using it on the go with my Nintendo Switch or phone. Having that sort of flexibility made it so convenient to use without having to find a power socket nearby.

As far as quality goes, the picture was perfectly acceptable, whether I was playing games, watching Netflix, or working–I didn’t have any complaints. The display gets nice in bright and the matte finish helps at preventing distracting glares, plus the colors are rich and it even supports HDR.

The one thing I probably wouldn’t recommend it for is design work. For that, I’d suggest using a monitor with a wider color gamut that has been properly calibrated. However, there is nothing stopping you from adding this as a second monitor to your setup to place all of the toolbars to keep your main calibrated monitor uncluttered for editing photos, videos, and graphics.

One final note about the speakers, when connecting the display it will default to using the speakers on the Lepow Portable Monitor. While the speakers sound fine, it is possible to switch back to your laptop’s built-in speakers by changing the sound output using the settings in Windows.

Final Thoughts

There’s a lot to like about the Lepow Portable Monitor. It’s big, it’s lightweight, it has good video quality, and there are plenty of ways to connect to it. If you’ve been looking to get a second monitor and don’t need it to be calibrated for design work, then this is a fantastic choice. It’s even better that it offers the flexibility of being portable, and provides a way to play your Nintendo Switch on a larger screen while on the go.

Set yourself up for a profitable future with content marketing

0

Traditional marketing involved cold calling and posting out leaflets to attract prospective customers. While these marketing approaches still have their place, there is a more effective alternative: content marketing.

When you hire SEO services, theyโ€™re likely to suggest content marketing as a long-term SEO strategy. But what is content marketing and how could it benefit your business?

What is content marketing?

Content marketing is an in-bound marketing technique which puts content at the core. It is focused on distributing relevant and valuable content which attracts your customers organically. Simply put, you create the content and your prospective customers come to you.

What type of content should you create?

The type of content that you should create depends on many factors including the demographics of your target audience, the market in which you operate and the products or services you offer.

Content can range from white papers, thought-leadership articles and blog posts to videos, animations and infographics.

The key is to create content which adds value to your potential customers. They arrive at your website looking for a solution to a problem and you provide it. Your prospective customer realises that you are an expert in your field and understands your value, ultimately converting to your products or services. Find local SEO services near me

What effect does content marketing have on SEO?

Content marketing is one of the single most effective ways to improve your search engine rankings and generate organic traffic to your website. Regularly producing quality content which is relevant to your customers will prove to search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing that your website is a valuable source of information in your market.

When youโ€™re creating content, itโ€™s important to ensure that you include your primary keyword along with relevant long-tail keywords within the content. However, be careful not to keyword-stuff. Make sure that your URL is relevant, your page title is optimised and your metadata is complete and your content will begin ranking on Google and other search engines in no time.

Is content marketing a short-term or long-term marketing strategy?

Once your content is created, it will continue to rank on Google and other search engines for years to come. Regularly updating your older content is an effective way to keep your content ranking on search engines and keeping your brand visible.

Content marketing isnโ€™t a quick fix. Itโ€™s a long-term strategy that you will continue to build upon in the months and years ahead. But stick with it โ€“ the long-term benefits of effective content marketing are countless.

Is content marketing expensive?

Content marketing is as expensive as you make it. You can outsource your content creation to a content marketing specialist or you can create it yourself. After all, youโ€™re the expert in your field.

Ensure that your content is optimised for search engines and thereโ€™s no reason that you canโ€™t create compelling content yourself.

Take away message

Content marketing is an effective long-term marketing strategy which increases your brand visibility through improving your search engine rankings and generating organic site traffic. Itโ€™s also a great way to position yourself to your customers as an expert in your field.ย

How to adjust WiFi settings on Android 10

0

WiFi, for many people, has become the most often used method of connecting to the internet. It’s nearly everywhere we go and continues to improve over generations. In short, it’s a crucial part of any smartphone experience.

Our phones have a great number of ways to manage WiFi connections and settings. Here are some of the ways you can tinker with WiFi Settings on Android 10, including sharing, cleanup, and general maintenance.

Managing WiFi settings on Android 10

The easiest and fastest way of getting to your WiFi settings is from the notifications drop-down shade. Swipe down from the top of your screen, then tap and hold the Wi-Fi icon.

You can also access it via your phone’s Settings app. Depending on phone manufacturer, this can be called Wi-Fi & Internet, Network & internet, or something similar. In many cases, it is among the first options in the Settings menu.

Now that you are in the WiFi menu, there are several things you can do here, the first being connecting to WiFi networks. For this, find out the SSID (name of the WiFi network), and its password. Once you know this, simply input the password to connect.

You can also manage your connected WiFi networks – and just like Bluetooth, the less you have to manage or deal with, the better. If your phone has saved the network settings, it means you will automatically connect to it. That is unless the password has been changed.

We recommend that you delete any WiFi networks that you don’t plan on connecting to again such as Hotel WiFi, public WiFi from a day in town, etc. You may choose to only remember WiFi networks that you know you will frequently connect to, such as your home, work place, or any other place you might make frequent visits to.

To do so, tap on the WiFi connection you wish to delete, and choose Delete, Forget, etc.

Additionally, you can also share your saved WiFi details with other people in the form of a readable QR code for other smartphones. This helps skip the process of sharing the SSID or the WiFi password and just requires the user to scan the QR code to instantly connect. Great stuff to have if your network has a really long and convoluted (read: strong) password.

Tap on the SSID you wish to share from your WiFi menu where you will enter a new menu that will prompt you to Forget, Disconnect, or Share. Tap on Share to generate a QR code that can be read by other devices.

Similarly, you can open your phone’s camera and aim it at the QR code. It will generate the SSID for you and you can connect to it instantly.

Google Assistant can now find your iPhone and order takeout

0

Google Assistant is arguably the most robust voice assistant available on mobile today. From your Android phone to your TV it can handle many common tasks like playing music, weather reports, and setting appointments. Google has expanded some of that functionality today to better help our daily lives, but two in particular stick out.

Find even an iPhone

You can now use Google Assistant to find your iPhone. Google claims this is already one of the most used features of Nest Hubs and smart displays for relocating misplaced Android devices, but the company has now expanded this feature to iPhone users as well.

This is accomplished by opting into the new notifications and critical alerts setting of the Google Home app on iOS. Once enabled, you can ping your phone to activate a notification and sound alert to help find that missing iPhone in the couch cushion. Even if you have the iPhone on Do Not Disturb the Google Home app will still push this tone to the phone.

Hey Google, order tacos

The second feature that Google announced today is that online takeout orders just got a speed boost thanks to Google Assistant by way of Duplex. While this one is a little more roundabout than the calling feature to get your haircut that Google unveiled a few years ago, it does use personal data and AI to complete an online order with fewer steps from you.

When searching for restaurants inside the Google Android app, if the “Order Online” or “Order Pickup” buttons are available then this feature may be an option. For participating locations Duplex will navigate the site and use any saved contact and payment details you have in Chrome Autofill to complete your order once you’ve selected to checkout.

But wait there’s more

Google has also been hard at work to make Routines simpler and more visible to users. You can now ask the Assistant for helpful hints and tutorials on how to set up Routines. The Google Assistant app now features a “Ready Made Routines” section for users to browse some of the more popular options that can be utilized.

Lastly, you can also use Google Assistant for the upcoming Oscars Awards. You can ask queries such as the Best Film Nominee or even past winners. This one is a bit campy but also feels very Google.
