Your older phone could get kicked off the network next year

If you’re rocking a phone more than a few years old, it could be at risk of losing mobile service next year. Major carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are all set to shut down their old 3G networks in 2022, which will cut off service for 3G only devices and affect some 4G devices as well.

Most customers are probably in the clear, but if you’re still using a phone from around 2016 or earlier, then you should definitely check if your phone will still be supported. It’s not only Android phones either, phones from Apple will also be affected.

Each network has its own cutoff date and method for determining if your device will still continue working. AT&T will be one of the first to shut down 3G service starting on February 22, 2022. To help customers find out if their devices will continue functioning or not, AT&T has created a list of smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and home wireless phones that will continue working.

The list includes many of the most popular devices from Samsung, Google, and OnePlus. It appears if you have a flagship Samsung phone that it’s most likely safe unless it is older than Galaxy S4 Mini. All of Google’s Pixel phones appear to be safe except for the first generation Pixel from 2016, and OnePlus smartphones going as far back as the OnePlus 6T are all in the clear.

Of course, there are way more brands than just those three and a long list of devices. Most people should be fine, but if you’re worried then give it a quick look over for your brand and model.

T-Mobile is next with a reported cut-off date of April 2022 on its network, while the recently acquired Sprint CDMA 3G network will go dark on January 1, 2022. Unfortunately, there is no list from T-Mobile to check if your device will continue to work or not. Instead, you can try entering your device’s IMEI number on its website to check if it is compatible with LTE and VoLTE. If so, then you should be safe. However, just like with AT&T, as long as your device is from the past few years it should be fine.

Verizon will be the last to shut down its 3G towers with a shutdown date of December 31, 2022. After that date, any phones with only 3G antennas or 4G phones without VoLTE will lose service. To check if you have one of those devices, Verizon has a condensed list on its site. The list includes all 3G basic phones, smartphones, and tablets.

As for 4G capable phones without VoLTE, Verizon gives a short list of some popular ones, such as the Galaxy S4 or prior and Apple smartphones prior to the iPhone 5, 5C, and 5S. The list also includes other devices such as the 3G Home Phone Connect, various Hum+ models, GizmoPal, the iPad 2, and more.

Even though the big cut-off date isn’t until next year, now is the time to check and start preparing by upgrading to a new phone, tablet, or other device if you want to keep your service.

As you might expect, performance is very good as well. Even atop an emulation layer, NoxPlayer running on powerful PC hardware makes a huge improvement over some mobile phones. You should see no huge slowdowns when running NoxPlayer.

Final Thoughts

NoxPlayer is a solution to a niche subset of Windows users who also want to play Android games. However, it offers those users a great, easy way to get to that installation with very little hassle. You download NoxPlayer, install the software, and then log into Google Play. That’s it.

Samsung announces two new affordable tablets, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE and Galaxy Tab A7 Lite

In the land of Android tablets, it’s fair to say Samsung is king. It’s one of the only manufacturers still making premium tablets these days, but it also has a more budget-focused lineup of tablets in its portfolio. Today, it announced two more joining the roster which won’t break the bank.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE

Starting with the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE, which much like the Galaxy S20 FE, cuts some corners to offer a tablet at a more affordable price.

As far as specs, the Galaxy Tab S7 FE comes with a large 12.4-inch 2460 x 1600 LCD display. It’s powered by an Octa-core 2.2x2GHz + 6×1.8GHz processor, which is most likely the Snapdragon 750G that was mentioned in leaks leading up to the launch.

There are two different models to choose from, one has 4GB of RAM with 64GB of storage, while the other features 6GB of RAM with 128GB of storage. However, both models will include a microSD card slot supporting cards up to 1TB, making it easy to add additional storage.

For all your video chats the Galaxy Tab S7 FE includes a 5MP front-facing camera, and an 8MP rear-facing camera, if you wanna try to take pics with this large mammoth of a slab.

Keeping that large display lit up is a 10,090mAh battery with 45W Super Fast Charging, and the Galaxy Tab S7 FE comes out of the box running Android 11. Speaking of the large display, there is an S Pen included in the box, making the Tab S7 FE perfect for jotting down notes or sketching.

There’s no word yet on U.S. availability, but the Galaxy Tab S7 FE launches in the UK on June 18, 2021, for £589 for the 4GB/64GB model or £629 for the 6GB/128GB model. You’ll be able to choose from four different colors for the metal finish, including Mystic Black, Mystic Green, Mystic Pink, and Mystic Silver.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite

Also joining the ranks is the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite for those of you looking for an even smaller more affordable tablet. It features an LCD display measuring 8.7-inches at 1340 x 800, making the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite easier to hold with one hand.

There’s an 8MP rear-facing camera and 2MP front-facing camera for all your photo and video calling needs.

It is powered by an Octa-core 4×2.3GHz + 4×1.8GHz processor, which is thought to be the MediaTek MT8768. There will be two different models including one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage or a version with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

Just like the Galaxy Tab S7 FE, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite also supports a microSD card slot for expanding the storage of the tablet. Rounding out the specs is a 5,100mAh battery and the Tab A7 Lite runs Android 11 out of the box.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite comes in Gray or Silver and it lands in the U.S. on June 10, 2021, starting at $159. It will also debut in the UK on June 18, 2021, starting at £149.

Nubia launches the lightweight RedMagic 6R gaming phone

RedMagic, the gaming arm of Nubia, announced a new phone to its lineup today. The RedMagic 6R is the newest gaming handset to join the RedMagic 6 family. Like the previously released RedMagic 6 and RedMagic 6 Pro, it shares a lot of the same specs.

For instance, the RedMagic 6R is powered by the Snapdragon 888 processor from Qualcomm and it comes with either 8GB RAM with 128GB of storage or a model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It also features Wi-Fi 6 and 5G connectivity for blazing fast transfer speeds when gaming or streaming.

Plus, it includes some of the hallmark RedMagic features, such as the customizable shoulder triggers and Game Space that can boost the performance of the GPU and CPU and more.

Where the RedMagic 6R starts to set itself apart from its sibling devices is the size. It comes in a smaller format with a 6.67-inch FHD+ OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and 360Hz touch sampling rate.

Along with the smaller size, the RedMagic 6R also uses a smaller 4200mAh battery with 30W charging, making this the most compact and lightest RedMagic 6 phone available coming in at around 187 grams.

Just because it’s smaller doesn’t mean that the RedMagic 6R is any less capable than its larger counterparts. In fact, the RedMagic 6R has one more additional rear camera than the larger RedMagic 6 devices and a higher resolution front-facing camera.

In comparison to the triple camera setup on the RedMagic 6 and 6 Pro, there is a quad-camera setup on the RedMagic 6R featuring a 64MP, 8MP, 5MP, and 2MP cameras. While on the front is a 16MP camera for all your selfie needs.

The RedMagic 6R will first be available in China starting in June for 2,999 Chinese Yuan for the model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while the version with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage will set you back 3,299 Chinese Yuan.

Global availability will be announced later in June and you can expect the RedMagic 6R to retail for around $500 USD.

Pokémon GO Fest 2021 coming this July, ticket prices dropped to $5

Calling all Pokemon GO fans, Niantic has just announced the plans for Pokemon GO Fest 2021. First of all, Pokemon GO Fest will take place on Saturday, July 17, 2021, and Sunday, July 18, 2021.

Next, and perhaps the biggest news of all, in celebration of Pokemon GO’s fifth year, the normal price of $14.99 has been lowered to $5 for a ticket. That’s a massive saving over last year and check out all that you’re going to get for that discounted price.

The virtual in-app event kicks off at 10 a.m. on both days and ends at 6 p.m. local time. Starting on the first day and regardless of whether you buy a ticket or not, all trainers will be able to enjoy these features.

    • You’ll also get to fill out the rest of your musical group! Will you pick Galarian Ponyta or Galarian Zigzagoon? Gardevoir or Flygon? All these Pokémon will be dressed to impress in special event costumes!
  • The Global Challenge Arena is back this year. On Saturday, ticket holders will work together to complete a collaborative challenge each hour. If they complete the challenge in time, they’ll earn a bonus for the remainder of the hour. You can check the Today View to keep track of global progress!
  • You’ll be able to complete four Collection Challenges, each themed after a habitat hour.
  • During each habitat hour, certain Pokémon will be attracted to Incense.
    • Jungle: Unown F, Unown G, Ludicolo, Chatot, Leafeon, and Serperior.
    • Desert Mountain: Flareon, Unown F, Unown G, Tyranitar, Flygon, and Throh.
    • Ocean Beach: Gyarados, Vaporeon, Azumarill, Unown F, Unown G, and Sawk.
    • Cave: Umbreon, Unown F, Unown G, Gardevoir, Absol, and Galvantula.
  • During event hours, Pokémon appearing in the wild and attracted to Incense will have an increased chance of being Shiny! It will be easier to discover Shiny Pokémon (in the wild and those attracted by Incense) on Saturday than on Sunday.
  • Shiny Unown F, Shiny Throh, and Shiny Sawk will be making their Pokémon GO debut during the event!

And that’s just day one of the event, starting on day two ticket holders will have access to these benefits.

On Sunday, July 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time, ticket holders will be able to enjoy the following.

  • Earn an extra 10,000 XP in raid rewards when you complete a Raid Battle!
  • Spin Gym Photo Discs to earn up to 10 Raid Passes. These can be used for in-person raids.
  • Complete Timed Research to earn up to eight Remote Raid Passes. These can be used to join a raid from anywhere.
  • Pick up a free event bundle containing three Remote Raid Passes! This will be available in the shop on Sunday, July 18, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time.
  • All Pokémon attracted to Incense from Saturday will be attracted to Incense during event hours on Sunday.

That’s not all though, during Pokemon GO Fest 2021 all lures activated will last for three hours, eggs placed in incubators will hatch in half the distance, and there will be event-exclusive Field Research tasks. Plus, Pokemon hatched from 7km eggs will include Igglybuff, Chingling, Audino, and more. All of this and special on-map visual effects with music created by Junichi Masuda for all trainers, regardless if you bought a ticket or not.

Ticket holders also get a bonus of special event stickers from Open Gifts or from spinning PokeStops. Don’t forget to snap some pics for a special surprise as well. Plus, trainer’s photos will be featured in the Today View in the app, so make sure to tag them with #PokemonGOFest2021.

You might wanna use some incense as well because Unown F and Unown G will be attracted to Incense throughout the event, and if you’re lucky you’ll get a shiny one.

Tickets will be available as an in-app purchase for $5 and with Google Play as a sponsor this year you’ll even earn 4x the amount of Google Play Points on all purchases. Android device owners will also be “eligible for an exclusive Sponsored Gift to help power their Pokémon GO Fest experience” when they purchase on Saturday, July 17, 2021.
