If you’re a gamer or have the slightest interest in gaming, you’ve most likely heard of ray tracing. That’s the technology behind super accurate reflections and shadows in gaming that give the world a more realistic feeling. Last year, the tech finally came to consoles with the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and it could be coming to mobile devices in the near future.
That is if AMD and Samsung have anything to say about it. The two recently partnered up in an effort to bring RDNA 2 graphics technology to Samsung’s Exynos mobile chipsets. The announcement was made today at the Computex conference in Taipei, but AMD was rather light on the details.
AMD describes the chip as the “next-generation Exynos SoC” but didn’t reveal what devices we may see the Exynos chip in. It did mention the SoC showing up in “flagship mobile devices” though. We’ll have to wait for Samsung to inform us as to what mobile devices may use the chip later on this year.
However, the good news is that AMD’s RDNA 2 technology should boost the performance of Samsung’s Exynos chips, which have lagged behind its Snapdragon counterparts from Qualcomm. Additionally, the RDNA 2 architecture will enable features such as ray tracing and variable rate shading.
AMD CEO Lisa Su had this to say about the partnership on stage.
AMD has partnered with industry leader Samsung for several years to accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile market, and weโre happy to announce that weโll bring custom graphics IP to Samsungโs next flagship mobile SoC with ray tracing and variable rate shading capabilities. Weโre really looking forward to Samsung providing more details later this year.
While this is exciting news for mobile gamers, it’s important to note that Samsung’s flagship offerings typically use Qualcomm chipsets here in the U.S. The Exynos versions are often sold in other countries. We’ll have to wait and see whether or not Samsung decides to go all in with its Exynos SoC and start offering it in more regions.

If you’re rocking a phone more than a few years old, it could be at risk of losing mobile service next year. Major carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are all set to shut down their old 3G networks in 2022, which will cut off service for 3G only devices and affect some 4G devices as well.
Most customers are probably in the clear, but if you’re still using a phone from around 2016 or earlier, then you should definitely check if your phone will still be supported. It’s not only Android phones either, phones from Apple will also be affected.
Each network has its own cutoff date and method for determining if your device will still continue working. AT&T will be one of the first to shut down 3G service starting on February 22, 2022. To help customers find out if their devices will continue functioning or not, AT&T has created a list of smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and home wireless phones that will continue working.
The list includes many of the most popular devices from Samsung, Google, and OnePlus. It appears if you have a flagship Samsung phone that it’s most likely safe unless it is older than Galaxy S4 Mini. All of Google’s Pixel phones appear to be safe except for the first generation Pixel from 2016, and OnePlus smartphones going as far back as the OnePlus 6T are all in the clear.
Of course, there are way more brands than just those three and a long list of devices. Most people should be fine, but if you’re worried then give it a quick look over for your brand and model.
T-Mobile is next with a reported cut-off date of April 2022 on its network, while the recently acquired Sprint CDMA 3G network will go dark on January 1, 2022. Unfortunately, there is no list from T-Mobile to check if your device will continue to work or not. Instead, you can try entering your device’s IMEI number on its website to check if it is compatible with LTE and VoLTE. If so, then you should be safe. However, just like with AT&T, as long as your device is from the past few years it should be fine.
Verizon will be the last to shut down its 3G towers with a shutdown date of December 31, 2022. After that date, any phones with only 3G antennas or 4G phones without VoLTE will lose service. To check if you have one of those devices, Verizon has a condensed list on its site. The list includes all 3G basic phones, smartphones, and tablets.
As for 4G capable phones without VoLTE, Verizon gives a short list of some popular ones, such as the Galaxy S4 or prior and Apple smartphones prior to the iPhone 5, 5C, and 5S. The list also includes other devices such as the 3G Home Phone Connect, various Hum+ models, GizmoPal, the iPad 2, and more.

FreedomPop was founded in 2012 by a capital investment venture led by creators Stephen Stokols and Steven Sesar to start a new carrier that molds free, open Internet with the traditional mobile telecom services. The company has a base focus with phones that work completely over the internet via voice over IP and supplements that when you are away from Wi-Fi with carrier towers.
FreedomPop originally launched with a limited run of phones compatible with Sprint. In 2016 the company expanded to “global compatibility” with a new partnership providing coverage with AT&T’s network. A year later it inked a deal with Target to sell service inside its stores to compete with Walmart and Straight Talk.
What are FreedomPop Rate Plans?
As mentioned above, FreedomPop starts at a free tier for just Wi-Fi enabled smartphone plans and moves towards more traditional monthly rates as you add data and voice away from Wi-Fi connections.
FreedomPop offers customers a free plan which includes unlimited minutes of WiFi calling, 10 text messages, and 25MB of data.
What about plans with more data?
FreedomPop has competitive rates for plans at 1GB, 4GB, and 10GB of LTE data. Each plan provides unlimited calls over WiFi as well as unlimited texting.

There aren’t any special promotions or deals on rate plans or new accounts, at least at this time. Looking at the shop is a slightly different experience, though. Some phones have instant discounts; other devices are refurbished and cheaper than buying a brand new model.
Can I bring my own phone to FreedomPop?
