How to open the task manager on a Chromebook

Computers run into problems from time to time. When that invariably happens one of the first troubleshooting steps is to check the task manager and see if anything is running amok. If you’re a long-time Windows user, you’ve undoubtedly hit the trusty Ctrl+Alt+Del in the past, or more recently Ctrl+Shift+Esc when Microsoft changed it in Windows 8.

Like Windows and other operating systems, Chrome OS also has a task manager which can be viewed using a couple of different techniques. Follow the steps below to discover how to open task manager on your Chromebook.

Either of these methods will get you to the task manager and allow you to see what apps or extensions are siphoning up all your resources and slowing down your machine. One just requires a little more effort than the other.

Keyboard Shortcut

One of the easiest and quickest ways to access the task manager is through a keyboard shortcut, and thankfully Chrome OS has an easy one to remember. Unlike Windows, it only requires two keypresses instead of one, just press the Search+Esc keys on the keyboard and the task manager will appear on the screen.

Open Manually

If you’re not a fan of keyboard shortcuts and prefer to use the trackpad, then this next method is for you. First, navigate to the hamburger menu (three dots) in the top right-hand corner. After clicking on it, locate the option for “More tools” and select “Task Manager” from the fly-out menu.

Ending Processes

Once the task manager is up on screen, you’ll get an overview of all the processes currently running on your Chromebook.

Tip: Double-clicking on the tab or extension will take you directly to the tab in question or settings for the extension.

Most of the time it’s easy to decipher which one is the troublemaker by clicking on CPU to arrange them by highest to lowest. From there, you’ll be able to select the process and clicking on “End Process.”

Tip: You can select multiple processes at once by holding Ctrl and clicking, or by holding shift to select a group of processes all at once.

Although wireless charging in mobile phones has been around for quite some time, it seems to have picked up a little steam as of late. Largely due to Apple’s MagSafe tech for its latest devices, consumers are more interested in wireless charging than ever.

Mophie, no stranger to the world of charging, is out with a new ecosystem of products centered around one common goal. In short, it aims to offer MagSafe-like experience to all handsets, regardless of whether it runs iOS or Android.

We’ve been provided a sample of some of the first accessories to hit the market and have come away quite impressed. Here’s a Test Drive review of the mophie snap ecosystem.

Early Impressions

Here’s how things break down in a nutshell. The mophie snap products employ the use of a circular magnetic ring that adheres to the back of your phone. Once in place it can help your phone stick to a car mount, wireless charger, or other accessory in the line.

If your phone has wireless charging capabilities and you’ve yet to purchase a car mount, you’d be wise to consider something in the mophie snap lineup. Not only will it make travel more convenient, it also opens the door to extra flexibility in other areas, too.

Sticking the snap plate onto your phone is about as easy as it gets, provided you know where your charging coils are located on the phone. There is a simple tool included with the snap adapters to help ensure you line things up properly.

Our advice is to clean the back of your phone properly and, if possible, avoid any cases with too much texture. There is an adhesive at play so the more of a tight seal or bite, the better. After you’ve got your snap adapter in place, you’re good to go.

We found the mophie snap products connect to each other easily and with a bit of “oomph”. There’s no questioning of whether things are connected; however, it doesn’t require all that much to pull them apart.

It’s important that point out that the snap adapters are nice to have even if you don’t want or need the wireless charging. Take the vent mount, for instance. This one doesn’t have any charging capabilities, but it makes it so you can place your phone in an easy-to-reach spot. If you rely on Google Maps, Waze, or Android Auto for anything, it’s nice to have a convenient place to glance at every so often.

On the other hand, if you do plan to utilize wireless charging as often as possible, check out the snap+ wireless vent mount. In short, it adds a powered wireless charger to the mount. This is a great option for those who like to top off the battery on the way home or to keep powered up on a road trip.

The snap+ juice pack mini is a portable charger for phones that calls to mind the other battery packs in the mophie lineup. The key difference here is that there are no extra ports for plugging in a device. Well, aside from the requisite USB-C port which can be used for both charging the battery or a phone.

Smaller than a deck of playing cards, it’s an extra 5,000mAh to keep in your pocket or purse. And similar to other mophie chargers, you get the soft fabric and minimalist design as well as four LED indicator lights. Indeed, you can see just how much battery is left in the reserve so you know when it’s time to charge it back up.

With other accessories due later this year, we like where mophie is headed. The snap adapters are a great way of adding MagSafe-like functionality to existing Apple devices as well as Qi-enabled handsets.

If you have a phone that supports wireless charging and have not purchased any accessories yet, the snap ecosystem is a no-brainer. Likewise, they’re convenient for standard devices, too.

Mint Mobile offers 6 free months of service with purchase of phone and 6 month plan

Mint Mobile is offering six months of free service or $90 in account credit to try to lure you away from your current carrier. This comes as Ryan Reynolds of Deadpool fame continues to try to shake up the wireless industry.

“I am so happy we keep finding new ways to bring value to an industry in dire need of it,” says Mint Mobile Owner Ryan Reynolds. “I wanted to launch Mint’s device program with an insane offer so we’re giving six months free with the very reluctant approval of the finance team. I appreciate their tepid support.”

However, like all deals, there is some fine print with this one. For starters, you’ll have to purchase a phone from Mint Mobile and six initial months of service. At this time, it also appears the only phones available for this deal are the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, and iPhone SE. Meaning, it’s the most accomodating promotion, if you’re an Android fan like we are around here at Android Guys.

Some of the other stipulations include, you have to port in your number from another carrier, and the free six months are for the 4GB per month data plan. Customers can choose to upgrade that plan to 10GB or 15GB, but then your free six months turns into a $90 credit with you footing the rest of the bill.

To wrap up, you have to buy one of three current iPhones, port your number in from a different carrier, and purchase an initial six months of the 4GB per month plan along with the phone. Then, and only then, will you receive an additional six months of free service from Mint Mobile.

That means if you purchase the cheapest iPhone SE model with six months of service you’re looking at a total of $489 for a new phone and one year of service. The iPhone 12 mini with the same promotion will set you back $819, while the iPhone 12 will run you $919.

As far as cellular promotions go, it’s not the worst. Most other carriers tempt you with a free phone that in turn is subsidized by locking you into a contract and two years worth of high-priced service. With Mint Mobile’s deal, it will net you a phone with one year of service without locking you into a contract. However, the phone will be locked to Mint Mobile but can be unlocked after a year of service.

In 2017 Comcast launched Xfinity Mobile as a contract-free MVNO carrier for Xfinity Internet customers.
