Samsung Good Lock: Completely change your One UI experience

0

Android phones and tablets come in many shapes and sizes, with different versions of software powering things. And while the default build of Android, commonly referred to as “stock” continues to gain traction, some device makers opt for their own user interface (UI) or user experience (UE).

Take, for instance, Samsung and the software it uses for handsets like the Galaxy S20. Having gone through multiple names and iterations over the years, its One UI powers many of its phones.

What is One UI?

In short, One UI is the software that runs on your Samsung phone or tablet. It is a so-called skin over Android that implements features and UI elements not present in stock Android. That is to really say it offers many features and branded customizations on top of the standard Android experience.

Peeling that onion back a layer, Samsung has an app or tool for its devices called Good Lock.

What is Samsung Good Lock?

Good Lock is a modular suite of apps that can customize various elements of the UI, including the so-called “Unit” apps and the “Family” apps, which are listed below with their descriptions.

Good Lock has been around since 2016 and has been updated yearly since then. It more or less offers a whole new layer of customization on top of One UI, embodied by the app’s tagline “Redesign your Galaxy.” Think of it has like a custom ROM experience without the hassle of rooting or messing around.

How do you install Good Lock and its different Units?

Good Lock main screen
Good Lock Main screen

You can install Good Lock here and once you’re within the app, you can click on the name of the Unit to install it. To go into the Unit once it’s installed, once again click on the name of the Unit. You’ll know whether or not a Unit is installed by the icon next to it, with not installed Units having a download icon next to them.

Good Lock Unit Apps

  • Lockstar – Create new Lockscreen style
  • QuickStar – Customize your special Quickpanel
  • ClockFace – Pick a clock style you like!
  • MultiStar – Enjoy enhanced Multiwindow experience
  • NavStar – Create your own navigation bar
  • Home Up – Enjoy enhanced One UI Home Experience
  • NotiStar – Notistar is new notification management service
  • Routines+ – Add advanced features to Bixby Routines so you can make more powerful routines

Family Apps

  • Keys Cafรฉ – Set up a keyboard that’s tailored to you
  • Pentastic – Add your uniqueness to S pen with Pentastic!
  • Wonderland – Create a moving wallpaper
  • Theme Park – Theme Park is a service to create a theme and install it quickly and easily
  • Nice Catch – Got tired of mysterious vibration on your phone?
  • One Hand Operation+ – Control your phone or tablet more easily with just one hand
  • EdgeTouch – Prevent unintended operation by setting restriction on the edge of your Galaxy
  • Sound Assistant – Advanced sound utility for your Galaxy

What Good Locks Units stand out the most?

MultiStar

Good Lock MultiStar Unit
MultiStar

MultiStar, as mentioned above, is dedicated to the Multi-window experience. I think one of the most standout features for more is the first one, “Quick launch of the Multi window”, which makes it so that the Recents key launches your multi-window mode. This is actually a feature I lost moving from my Note 10+ to my Galaxy S21 Ultra, so getting it back is a very pleasant experience. Multi Focus is also an interesting concept, and this can make multitasking much easier because you can switch between apps quickly and easily.

Home Up

Good Lock Home Up Unit
Home Up Main screen

Home Up, despite the name, isn’t dedicated to just your home screen. It also has two particularly interesting components in it: Share Manager and Task Changer.

Share Manager

Good Lock Share Manager Unit
Share Manager

Within the Share Manager Unit, you can change up how the menu looks when you share things, including turning parts off to make it appear smaller on the screen. You can also add Favorites to your Direct Share, the bit that appears at the very top of your share menu.

Task Changer

Good Lock Task Changer Unit
Task Changer

The Task Changer Unit can change the layout of your Recents Menu and turn on and off certain components. Each layout type brings some different options that you’ll have to explore, but my personal favorite layout is the grid. It makes your Recents easier to see all at once.

SoundAssistant

Good Lock Sound Assistant Unit
Sound Assistant

Sound Assistant has actually been around for quite a while before it was part of the Good Lock family. You can theme your volume panel, control individual app volume, increase volume steps (which is good if you have trouble finding a middle ground in your volume), and much more.

QuickStar

Good Lock QuickStar Unit
QuickStar

QuickStar can change your Quick Panel and your notification bar, including the ability to change where you swipe to open the Quick Panel directly, remove icons from your notification bar, and style your Quick Panel (I’ll touch on this in the future when I cover Theme Park more in-depth).

Parting Thoughts

Obviously, this is only the tip of the iceberg with Good Lock, which offers many more units and a world of customization. Regardless of which units you decide to install and configure, Good Lock can truly Redesign your Galaxy.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series debuts with Wear OS

0

In addition to announcing a pair of new folding phones (Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3) at its Unpacked event, Samsung also introduced the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic and Galaxy Watch 4.

As the first smartwatches to feature Wear OS powered by Samsung, the wearables include the newly-announced Exynos W920 processor. The chip employs cutting-edge 5nm technology for more efficiency.

According to Samsung, the new line of smartwatches offer Samsungโ€™s “most complete wellness experience” to date and house a new groundbreaking sensor. The component lets users measure blood oxygen levels, detect AFib (irregular heartbeat), and can also calculate body composition.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic (via Samsung)

The Watch 4 series of wearables include more, and better, Google apps, and an overall enhanced experience. Details include faster automatic workout recognition, more accurate calorie counting, and better sleep tracking.

In terms of hardware improvements, they include a sharper always-on AMOLED display, faster charging, and generally thinner body.

The Body Composition measurement tool gives wearers a better understanding of their overall health and fitness, and includes measurements such as skeletal muscle mass, basal metabolic rate, body water and body fat percentage.

The Galaxy Watch 4 has a smooth, thin design reminiscent of the Galaxy Watch Active, and features an aluminum body. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic dials things up a bit with stainless steel and a physically rotating bezel.

Availability

Both models of wearable will be offered in two sizes (40mm and 44mm) and with an LTE variant. The Galaxy Watch 4 series starts at $250 for the Bluetooth models and $300 with 4G LTE. The Watch 4 Classic is $100 more at $350 and $400. Pre-orders are available immediately with both sold in a variety of color options.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Z Flip 3 at latest Unpacked event

0

Samsung on Wednesday held its latest Unpacked where it showed off its latest and greatest mobile tech. Unfortunately for Note fans, it appears there won’t be a new model this year as Samsung is going all-in with foldables.

Taking center stage this time around are the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3. The former we’ll detail here, but if you’re interested in learning more about the spiritual successor to the Note series of phones, check out out coverage of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 announcement.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3

The more compact of the folding phones, the Galaxy Z Flip3 includes many of the rugged improvements from the Galaxy Z Fold 3, including the Armor Aluminum frame, IPX8 water-resistance, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

Worth noting, of course, the smaller design means it loses out on some other key specs. For example, the Flip 3 only has Bluetooth 5.1 instead of 5.2, there’s no Wi-Fi 6E support, and it can only charge at 15W instead of the 25W the Fold3 is rated for.

None of this is really a deal-breaker, but it’s certainly a step down from the Fold3. Below are the full specs of the Galaxy Z Flip3.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 Specs:

  • Display: 6.7-inch Dynamic OLED 2640 x 1080 120Hz
  • SoC: Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 or Samsung Exynos 2100 depending on the region
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: 128GB or 256GB
  • Rear Cameras: 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide, 12MP f/1.8 main with OIS
  • Front Camera: 10MP f/2.4 cover camera
  • Battery: 3,300mAh with 15W wired charging and 10W Qi wireless charging
  • OS: Android 11 with One UI 3.1.1

Availability

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 is available for pre-order now for $999 in the U.S. and it’s expected to arrive by August 21, 2021. It comes in Cream, Green, Lavender, Phantom Black, Gray, White, or Pink.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 announced for August 27

0

Samsung on Wednesday unveiled its third-generation foldable handsets, one of which being the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The other model announced, the Galaxy Z Flip 3, has its own coverage.

Slated to arrive in late August, it’s built of a new “Armor Aluminum” material with Gorilla Glass Victus. Moreover, its IPX8 rated against water, marking a first in the folding phone space.

Lighter, thinner, and more durable than its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is also less expensive than previous generations. Indeed, the phone retails with a starting price of $1,800 for the 256GB version.

In terms of hardware specifications, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 features a 6.2-inch AMOLED cover screen and 7.6-inch AMOLED screen inside. Performance comes from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 octa-core processor with either 256GB or 512GB storage.

Memory comes in at a hefty 12GB while the 4,400mAh battery keeps things running. Cameras are 10-megapixels and 4-megapixels for the front cover and front main, respectively.

As far as productivity and user experience goes, Samsung has moved the needle again for its foldable handset. For the first time ever, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 supports the S Pen digital stylus, meaning marking up documents and taking notes becomes that much more efficient.

Samsung is also working with partners like Google and Microsoft on apps designed to take advantage of the multiple screens and/or larger display. Further, Samsungโ€™s new Labs feature plays nice with most other apps, optimizing them with re-sizing and aspect ratio adjustments, and providing Multi-Active Window and a Flex Mode Panel support.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Specs

  • Display: 7.6-inch AMOLED 2268 x 1768 120Hz main screen; 6.2-inch AMOLED 2268 x 832 120Hz cover screen
  • SoC: Qualcomm Snapdragon 888
  • RAM: 12GB
  • Storage: 256GB or 512GB
  • Rear Cameras: 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide, 12MP f/1.8 main with OIS, 12MP f/2.4 2X telephoto with OIS
  • Front Camera: 10 MP f/2.2; 4MP f/1.8 in-display camera
  • Battery: 4,400mAh with 25W wired charging and 10W Qi wireless charging
  • OS: Android 11 with One UI 3.1.1

As you can see, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a bit of a beast on paper featuring dual 120Hz displays this year, the latest Snapdragon 888 chip from Qualcomm, and 12GB of RAM. It also boasts Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6E, and support for 5G networks.

Furthermore, the Galaxy Fold 3 is Samsung’s most durable folding phone yet with a stronger Armor Aluminum frame, IPX8 water-resistance, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

Samsung also upgraded the folding display this year by using a PET screen over the TPU material that was previously used. The new PET plastic should improve the resistance against dings and scratches, and that should come in handy with the new S Pen support.

S Pen

Speaking of the S Pen, Samsung offers two different models of the S Pen. The first is the S Pen Fold edition with support only for the Z Fold3. Unfortunately, there is nowhere to store the S Pen in the device like with the Note series. Instead, you’ll need to buy a case that features a slot to keep it handy.

Since the S Pen Fold Edition won’t be inserted into the device, this means it doesn’t feature Bluetooth and won’t require charging. What this means, is you’ll lose some of the more advanced features from the Note series but it will still support Air command. Oh, and did I forget to mention the S Pen Fold Edition won’t come bundled in, it’s an additional $50 purchase.

If you want an S Pen with all the features, then you’ll have to spring for the more expensive $100 S Pen Pro. The S Pen Pro is a slightly larger stylus with Bluetooth supporting Air command, Air Actions, and device switching. With Bluetooth built-in, you’re going to need to charge the S Pen Pro and for that, it includes a USB-C at the end of the stylus.

Both of these S Pen models have been designed to work using less pressure and rounded tips to work better on the delicate Fold3 display and prevent damaging it.

Availability

The next-gen folding handset is offered Phantom Black, Phantom Green, and Phantom Silver with a starting price of $1,799.99 for the 256GB storage capacity. A 512GB option is also offered for $1,899.99, however a limited time promotion sees Samsung discounting the price by $100 putting at the same price.

Limited-time Promotions

Through August 26, 2021, consumers who pre-order the phone on Samsung.com via the Shop Samsung mobile app can receive the following discounts and deals:

  • Get $200 Samsung Credit
  • Opt-in to a 3-year Samsung Care+ plan (cancellable at any time) to also get a discount on the total plan price and have no monthly payment for the first 12 months.
  • Trade-in up to four devices and earn up to $800 in credit to be applied toward a Galaxy Z Fold 3
  • Refer a friend with Samsungโ€™s Referral Program and unlock up to $1,000 in rewards.

Special Edition

Thom Browne and Samsung have partnered yet again, this time bringing the signature Thom Browne signature colors (Thom Browne White) to the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Pre-orders are available immediately for $3,499.99 with select market availability and limited numbers.

Nokia phone buyer’s guide

0

Buying a phone in 2021 is an entirely different situation than it was just a few years back. Many consumers are used to buying their phones from their wireless service provider but that’s slowly changing.

Thanks to the growing presence of unlocked handsets, customers are now able to choose from a much wider selection. Instead of being stuck with what your carrier offers, consider going direct to the manufacturer.

Nokia is one brand that has done pretty well in the unlocked space; it continues to grow its portfolio with models at a variety of price points and hardware features.

We’ve put together this Nokia phone buyer’s guide to help you make heads or tails out of everything. This should help you get a better understanding of what’s currently available from Nokia.

Nokia Phone Buyer’s Guide

Nokia’s phones are essentially named and classified with a number. The general rule of thumb here is the bigger the number, the more powerful the phone.ย As of today its phones mainly range from the 2 and 8 series of phones; the Nokia 7.2, for instance, is a successor to the Nokia 7.1.ย The newer models in the Nokia lineup include the G10, G20, and XR20.

Android One

One of the best parts about Nokia phones is that they come with a stock version of Android. It’s lean and clean and left the way Google intended it to be.

Additionally, Nokia does a wonderful job of supporting its phones with major software updates and monthly security patches. Its devices receive two years of major platform updates and three years of security and bug fixes.

Dedicated Button

Another common feature in Nokia phones is a dedicated hardware button for Google Assistant. This gives users a quick and easy way of accessing the popular search tool and virtual assistant.

Key Phones

These are some of the current phones and their respective features offered by Nokia.

Nokia XR20

About as robust of an experience as you’re apt to find with the handset maker, standout details for the XR20 include a two-year warranty with three years of OS upgrades and four years of security updates. That’s far and above what most companies are willing to offer.

The sleek casing is designed to the MIL-STD-810H military standards and takes on drops, water, dust, and dirt. In fact, you can clean it with soap and water.

The dual rear camera configuration includes a 48-megapixel sensor, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, and dedicated flash. Then there’s also a suite of hardware and software enhancements to ensure everything looks great.

Nokia G10 and G20

Powered by Android 11, these two are more budget-minded approaches to the everyman phone. That is to say they are 4G handsets with MediaTek processors and modest amounts of memory.

Either phone would make a great first smartphone for someone but we suggest spending the extra money for the G20 if it’s available. For your money you’ll get more storage and performance.

Nokia X100

Nokia X100

Among the bigger and more well-rounded, the Nokia X100 runs Android 11 and offers 5G support.

Users get a large 6.67-inch display as well as a quad-camera (48MP + 5MP Ultra-Wide + 2MP Macro + 2MP Depth) array with ZEISS featuresโ€‹.

Under the hood are a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480G processor bolstered by 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. Rounding things out are a 4,470mAh battery and a side-mounted power and fingerprint sensor button.

Nokia G300

Powered by Android 11, the device provides users with a 6.52-inch HD+ screen, a triple camera array, and 4,470mAh battery.

A mid-range phone for modest needs, it offers wide support for 4G LTE bands and 5G, too. The handset packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 processor with 4GB RAM. Storage is listed at 64GB of space but a microSD expansion card slot allows for up to 1TB external media.

Nokia G50

Nokia G50

An excellent option for first-time users and those who don’t demand much of their phone, this one packs a large 6.82-inch HD+ screen and an equally large 5,000mAh battery.

The handset runs Android 11 and comes with 4GB and 128GB memory. A triple-camera configuration snaps ultra-wide and portrait shots alike while the expandable (up to 512GB) storage ensures you’ve got room to store them.

Nokia 3 Series

Often sold through prepaid carriers and MVNOs, these are now what you’d find in the entry level space from Nokia. Although they are a little lighter on hardware, they still come with a wonderful software experience that’s backed with years of support.

How to download free and open source apps with F-Droid

0

How do you download apps on your Android phone? Most likely you head to the Google Play Store as it’s often pre-installed on your phone. Moreover, it gives you access to pretty much every kind of app or game you can think of. If not the Play Store, you probably use the Amazon Appstore.

What if you have a passion for open source software? Or, what if you donโ€™t like Google serving you ads and sponsored content as part of your experience? If either of these situations sounds like you, perhaps you should consider F-Droid.

What is open source?

Open Source Software (OSS), is software whose source code (the stuff that makes up the app) is made available for anyone and everyone to view, edit, or copy. This code is often managed by the git versioning system that keeps track of changes, called โ€œcommitsโ€. The code is then uploaded to repositories on websites such as GitHub or GitLab.

The basic makeup of Android is open source software, known as the Android Open Source Project. Similarly, the Chrome browser is based off of an open source browser called Chromium.

What is F-Droid?

F-Droid is an app store that exclusively deals in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). That is to say that he apps you download are open source and come at no cost to you. The main F-Droid repository mostly consists of apps vetted, compiled (put together from source), and signed by F-Droid. The app in itself is free of any form of tracking, which is why youโ€™ll never see any download stats on the apps you find.

How do I get started with F-Droid?

First, head to to F-Droid.org on your phone and click the download button. Your phone will probably prompt you with a warning or notification. If that’s the case, do what it says and go into settings and allow your browser as an app source.

Upon installation, open the app up where you will see it immediately refreshing information from the repository.

When you click on an app, youโ€™ll see the name, when it was last updated, some important links about the app, permissions the app needs, and previous versions.

If you like the app, click install. Itโ€™ll download the app, and then you have to allow F-Droid to install apps and then install the app manually.

It’s worth noting here that this means that all updates will have to be manually installed. This may change in the future because Android 12 could introduce a permission for โ€œalternativeโ€ app stores to be able to install apps without user intervention.

F-Droid App Info Page
App Info Page

In your settings, you can do things like change how updates are handled, change your theme, add a proxy, and turn on anti-feature apps

Whatโ€™s an anti-feature app?

These are apps that, for one reason or another, arenโ€™t completely in line with the F-Droid ethos. They may contain ads or tracking, connect to a non-free network service (such as YouTube or Facebook), or rely/depend on a non-free app or service (e.g. Google Play Services).

F-Droid Settings Page
Settings Page

What if the 3,000 existing apps on F-Droid arenโ€™t enough for me?

No problem! There are a variety of extra repositories you can add on, with some only containing one or a few specific apps. The biggest one, and a favorite of mine for those hoping to more fully replace the use of Google Play, is the IzzyOnDroid Repo. This contains apps compiled by the original developers and might include dependencies on Google Play Services. In total, IzzySoft contains around 650 apps.

How do I add a repository?

To add a repository, go to https://forum.f-droid.org/t/known-repositories/721 and copy the link to the repo you would like to add. Then go into your F-droid settings, to repositories and then click the plus sign. The link will likely populate from your clipboard, so all you have to do is click โ€œAddโ€ and let the app add and update the repository.

After that, you’re good to go! Enjoy your newly-freed Android experience!

Enjoy a lifetime of safe, secure browsing with BelkaVPN, on sale now

0

If you have not installed a VPN for your home or office, it’s time to get serious. Not only do they help in providing a more secure and anonymous way of browsing the internet, they can also be used for plenty of other reasons.

Take, for instance, the concept of watching region-restricted content from streaming services. Using a VPN can open the door to a whole array of movies and shows that aren’t available in your current location.

Another key reason to consider a VPN? According to a recent security.org study, roughly one in ten VPN users said they use the service to facilitate whistleblowing, activism, or bypassing government or organization restrictions. Moreover, when people feel like their liberties are at risk, VPN usage rises. It’s no coincidence that VPN searches soared when Trump’s administration considered banning TikTok last year.

Should you be ready to purchase a VPN we have just the deal for you. Visit the AG Deals Store and you’ll find that we have a lifetime subscription to BelkaVPN for just $39.99, a discount of about 94 percent.

Motorola Phone Buyer’s Guide

0

When it comes to phones, Motorola is no doubt a familiar name to all. It’s the brand behind the iconic Razr phone of the mid 2000’s as well as the Droid line that helped take Android to the stratosphere. It’s also the company with a lot of “firsts” in the mobile space.

If you’ve ever looked at the phone market and found yourself confused by the numerous Motorola brands and models, you’d not be alone. Motorola has its fair share of product lines and devices.

It may feel challenging to try to make sense of everything, but itโ€™s not quite as bad as it seems. Here, weโ€™ll help you get an understanding as to what Motorola offers consumers in fall of 2020.

Moto E

First introduced back in 2014, this is the durable, low-cost experience geared toward first-time smartphone buyers. Moreover, it’s a great way to buy an affordable unlocked phone that works with a variety of wireless service providers.

The Moto E line is often sold through prepaid and MVNO carriers; it’s also popular in emerging markets. If you’re a new smartphone user, or someone with minimal needs, this is a great place to start.

Moto G

Moving up a notch, the Moto G line is more robust and features hardware that’s mid-range and just short of what might be considered a “flagship” experience.

The Moto G family of phones is split into slightly different versions of the same general approach, with each catering to a slightly different user type.

The Moto G Power, for instance, is big on battery, touting three days of usage per charge. The Moto G Stylus, for its part, comes with a removable stylus for jotting down notes or marking up documents.

You’ll find different versions of the Moto G series at a variety of carriers, including post-paid and prepaid. Some models will feature 5G connectivity while others may not.

Motorola One

The Motorola One is where the phone maker starts putting forward some of the more interesting technology and higher-end hardware.

Like the Moto G, this line of phones is usually split into a number of options, each a little different from the next. The materials used in these devices is a bit more premium and the phones are definitely more stylish.

It’s not just the physical stuff, either. Motorola has added some AI smarts and custom touches to take advantage of that cool hardware. All the while keeping things user-friendly and a software experience that’s about as clean as it comes.

The current Motorola One lineup includes the One 5G Ace which is sold unlocked direct to consumer.

Motorola Edge

The true flagship in Motorola’s armada is the Motorola Edge as it’s one of the brand’s all-around best devices.

Motorola Edge 2020

The Motorola Edge is constructed using an anodized aluminum frame and feature spacious screens with curved edges and hole-punch cutouts for front-facing cameras. Motorola includes some custom software to take advantage of the edges, giving users quick access to notifications, apps, shortcuts, and more.

Motorola Razr

The folding phone is back. Indeed, this is a modern approach to the clam shell device that was all the rage about 15 years back. The Motorola Razr maintains the look and feel of the classic phone, but this time it’s Android running the show.

Motorola Razr

The exterior has a Quick View display for notifications, at-a-glance GPS turn-by-turn, music control, and more. Opened up, there’s a 6.2-inch display and the same Motorola and Google experience you’ve come to appreciate.

In terms of true power, this is more of a mid-range phone so you’re paying for the aesthetics and convenience of its design.

Where to Buy

As indicated above, you’ll find various versions of the Motorola portfolio at wireless carriers and retailers. You may find the occasional one-off name or exclusive model, but they’ll still fit with the breakdown we’ve created.

Here are a number of places to look for buying Motorola phones.
