OnePlus announces the 10T

0

Those that follow OnePlus have come to expect two launches a year. The global flagship in spring and then another refresh around late summer. We’ve seen the OnePlus 10 earlier this year and the company has now let us officially know that the OnePlus 10T is coming in August.

OnePlus notes that as is a tradition at this point the 10T marks more of a performance upgrade than a complete redesign. The mid-year edition will feature the latest silicon from Qualcomm with the 8+ gen1 Mobile Platform. This new release from the chipmaker promises lower power consumption despite having better performance.

Alongside the new hardware, OnePlus will also be revealing OxygenOS 13 during the launch event on August 3rd. The company claims this will hold true to the great features we’ve come to love from Oxygen while keeping the smooth user experience and safety features. This includes always on display and Zen Mode, along with improvements to connectivity, gaming, and customization.

The launch event will take place at the Gotham Hall in New York City on August 3rd. If you’d like to make the trip, tickets can be purchased and attendees will include OnePlus Nord buds and other swag. Tickets and more details can be found at http://www.oneplus.com while you can engage with the live event remotely as well. OnePlus will live stream the big reveal of the OnePlus 10T via the company’s YouTube page.

Be sure to mark your global region time for the event listed below:

• 10am Eastern Time (ET)
• 3pm British Summer Time (BST)
• 4pm Central European Summer Time (CEST)
• 7:30pm India Standard Time (IST)
• 10pm Hong Kong Time (HKT)

Boox Nova Air C e-reader review

It’s rare these days that a new tech device gets me excited. That’s not to say most segments in the market have gotten boring, but many have become somewhat predictable. I was truly intrigued to get my hands on the Boox Nova Air C e-reader. This completely color e-ink tablet brings a unique feature set to the oldie, but goodie e-reader.

Design

If you’ve held any e-reader from the last decade, the Boox Nova Air C will be familiar. You have a 7.8-inch screen with pretty symmetrical bezels on the side that offer a good footprint to grip the tablet. There’s a lone power button on the top and pogo pins for a case on the left side. On the right of the screen is a magnetic strip for holding the included stylus, while the bottom houses the USB-C charging port and two speaker grills.

Internally, you have a decent combination of 3GB of RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage. Dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0 are also present. The entire back and edges of the device is also wrapped in a nice, soft-touch coating.

Screen

This is truly the star of the Nova Air C tablet. As we mentioned the all-color panel makes this the next generation of E-ink capabilities. For years this tech was limited to only grayscale images. The on-cell Kaleido Plus screen brings a much more vibrant array of output to the Nova Air C.

The resolution is 468×624 with 100dpi in color images and can increase that to 1404×1872 with 300dpi on black and white images. Both are impressive for something without a more advanced display like an LCD or LED panel we see in other tablets.

This translates to a good, but not a great experience overall. I had high hopes for the Boox Nova Air C but found the colors to be more muted than I expected. Maybe I had pumped it up too much as my ultimate comic reader but did take some getting used to just how the images are portrayed on the screen.

Even still, the addition of color e-ink makes this a much more superior option to its predecessors without color. Documents, pictures, and comic reading are much richer with the Kaleido Plus panel. The palette contrast does lend to a better experience with your media.

However, as mentioned you just need to have certain curbed expectations. Even with this leap, the Nova Air C only allows for around 4,000 color shades while a standard LCD can push up to 16 million. It takes your eyes time to adjust to just how this is displayed and to how the pages transition.

Finally, let’s talk about the refresh rate. Boox offers three different levels that can be accessed via the quick panel in both the reading view and in the settings shade. The lowest level is ideal for standard text reading. In the middle one, I found a good medium for magazines, the web, and comics. The highest really should just be reserved if you want to attempt to watch videos (more on that in a sec).

The last mention on the display is ghosting. Even with the advancements and all that I love about the Nova Air C, it’s hard to ignore that it still struggles with fragments of the previous image still being displayed after you move to the next page.

While this isn’t much of a distraction with textbooks or even the web as much, it really dampens the experience of comic books. I consistently had a hard time moving thru the action panels due to images of the previous page bleeding thru.

Software and stylus

The Boox Nova Air C runs full Android 11 and after the initial setup, you can grant full access to the Google Play Store to really add apps to this thing. I had zero issues installing any app from the Play Store, but compatibility may be a problem with some apps not playing nice with the specific compromises the Nova Air C brings to the table.

Personally, I didn’t see many trips when using Android apps. I was easily able to add my password manager, Firefox, and my favorite comic reader without fault. I even installed YouTube, but that should come with a warning.

Even the highest refresh rates seriously struggle with any video. Will it technically play? Yes, but I’d challenge almost any nerd to sit and watch it without flipping out. You can almost see the frames per second as they move through the video. It’s more like watching an original Disney animation where you can see each transition between the images.

What does great is the included stylus. This adds even more options for taking notes, annotating PDFs, and even navigating the OS. The capacitive screen easily picks up the pen input for scrolling and handwriting. The default keyboard even has handwriting recognition to text that’s pretty solid.

The optional official Boox case can offer even more functionality. When paired through a pogo connection, you get dedicated buttons that act as volume controls with audio and video. While in a reading app, these move you through the pages without having to use the screen controls.

Battery life

As you may assume, the battery life is stellar. E-ink has always excelled in this regard and the Nova Air C is no exception. Boox rates the tablet to last up to four weeks in standby mode and I’d say this is accurate. I’ve seen almost no reduction in capacity while not using the tablet.

I’d say in general use you should get around two weeks of screen time before having to charge the Nova Air C. Of course, the more you try to use it as a traditional tablet, the battery life will suffer. In mixed e-reader and web browsing, this thing should be an endurance champ.

Even if you suck at managing the battery on your own Boox has you covered. The Nova Air C will automatically power off when left idle for longer than 30 minutes. This is a great way to ensure that the next time you pick it up you have juice left.

Conclusion

I had high hopes for the Boox Nova Air C tablet and it largely delivered on a few of those fronts. Even with the limitations of the display, the sheer fact that color imaging is a reality on this type of device is amazing. Reading, document management, and light app usage are a joy to use on the Nova Air C.

The last hang-up for many users might be the price. At $450, the Boox Nova Air C is far past the impulse purchase. For those consumers who have been waiting on this type of experience, it’s a trend-setting device. However, many may opt for a traditional tablet at this price point.

If you are in the crowd of adding this full-color e-ink tablet to your bag, be sure to head over to the company’s website to get your order in. You can also find it at a slight discount using the Amazon link below.

TECNO Camon 19 Pro gets color-changing variant

4

Chinese phone maker TECNO, who recently introduced its Camon 19 Pro, is back again with a special edition of the new handset. Dubbed, the Mondrian Edition, its design is based on the works of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.

Internally the phone doesn’t diverge from the standard Camon 19 Pro. That is to say it has a 6.8-inch IPS LCD display with 120Hz refresh rate, a 64-megapixel main camera, 50-megapixel telephoto camera, and 2-megapixel depth sensor.

Under the hood you’ll find a MediaTek Helio G96 processor with 8GB RAM and up to 256GB internal storage. Battery capacity is listed at 5,000mAh with support for 33W fast charging.

The main draw here is the physical appearance of the phone. Under normal settings, the back of the device is all white with straight black lines which intersect each other. Add a bit of sunlight to it, however, and things get interesting.

The rear panel of the Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition changes color when exposed to indoor and outdoor light. Using polychromatic photoisomer technology, which TECNO refers to as ‘Sunlight Drawing’, it turns the back of the phone into a work of art.

The TECNO Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition is not the first handset to feature a color-changing rear but it’s the first to have a co-branding of sorts. We’re fond of the trend and hope to see it in future models from all of the major players.

The special edition device was introduced in partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) at an event which paid tribute to art icon Piet Mondrian, the inspiration behind the design – depicting the geometric elements consisting of “primary colors” and straight lines – to reflect an equal and harmonious order.

Press Release

The Camon 19 Pro Mondrian Edition arrives this month alongside the standard version and it will be available in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Southern Asia. Pricing varies from market to market.

MioFive 4K Wi-Fi Dashcam review

Cruise Cloud Technology Corporation has announced its release of the Miofive 4K, Wi-Fi connected, AI-enabled smart dash camera with the intention of providing a unique product for those looking to monitor their own driving as well as protect their precious cargo as well as their property.

The Miofive dash camera comes with plenty of features designed to give you the highest quality recordings of your driving in order to capture and store every moment for easy access through a smartphone application.

It features AI drivers assistance to give you suggestions on improving the safety of your driving by measuring the smoothness of your trips with a built-in G-sensor. It also comes with GPS tracking so that you can record your driving routes and speed, as well as seven different transmittance lenses to provide you with 30FPS, 4K resolution, and 140 degrees of wide-angle view day and night.

The Miofive can be easily mounted to the interior of your windshield and you will have to run a cable from any sort of outlet to the camera to plug into the micro-USB port on the camera. This will provide the camera power while you are driving but the camera also has some battery powered features like time-lapse and Parking Guard to protect your vehicle while the engine isn’t running.

Right off the bat, it sounds like some pretty cool tech for a dash camera priced just $150.

Setup

The setup is probably the most difficult part of the experience with the camera, but it wasn’t a huge deal. You will be provided with all of the tools necessary to make sure your camera adheres properly to the windshield without having to worry about leaving behind sticky residue or melted glue from intense heat.

With a quick application of an electrostatic film sticker to the windshield, (and removing the inevitable bubbles) you can then adhere the 3M adhesive mount to the windshield. From there you can go about your own method of routing the cable from its power source to using the provided plastic pry bar to sort of wedge the cable between interior panels.

I was actually very surprised to find how easy it was to hide the entire cable, running it from the center console, down the side next to the passenger seat, under the glove box, up the passenger-side A-pillar, and across the top of the windshield to the camera in the center behind by rearview mirror. Of course, it may be a different experience with each car, so I’d suggest looking in your own car for cable routing options. Any small channel will likely be enough to tuck the cord in and forget about it.

Fortunately, there is an extra set of adhesives in the box in case you mess up the initial go around, and besides that, the camera can be quickly and easily detached from the mount to remove it from the car for whatever reason.

The actual mounting point of the camera can be freely swiveled up and down to change the angle of view, but up and down is the only range of motion of the mount, so ensure the mount is level before you apply it to the windshield!

The Miofive App

The Miofive app is designed to help you get connected with your camera through a 5GHz Wi-Fi connection so that you can view all of that stored data and get everything you need from it.

You will have to register an account to use many of the drive logging features, but once you have created the account with only your phone number you will then be able to see your recorded trips and some metrics about each trip.

You can also use the Parking Locator feature of the app in case you often find yourself wandering through a parking lot in search of your vehicle. Just enter the app, apply the feature and the app will automatically drop a pin at your current location so that you can return to your vehicle stress-free.

The app is also going to be your best friend for getting access to all of those recordings. I would suggest messing around with the camera for a while before setting off, though.

There are a lot of unique features that you should be considering in the settings of the camera that are useful for maximizing the likelihood that you can get proof and protect yourself in the case of an accident. All of the videos that your dashcam records will be found in the Album of the app, including Loop recordings, EMER videos, Parking Guard, Time-Lapses, and Photos.

You can also see a live view of the camera through the app, but with a 2.2-inch display on the camera itself, I don’t think it’s the most useful feature. I can see the potential if you wanted to check the camera while away from the vehicle but there would be no way to do so unless the car was running and very nearby, or you have purchased the hard-wiring kit for the device.

Additionally through the app you will be able to access the quick settings of the camera, to adjust things like EMER recording sensitivity, Parking Guard sensitivity, camera quality effects, and just about any other feature you could think of.

Recording Quality and More Features

Essentially, the Miofive functions as many other normal dash cams do. Once you start the engine, the camera will boot up and begin recording.

With the loop function, the camera records in the regular, 30 FPS, 4K resolution, and each loop clip (one minute long) will be stored on the camera for around three days, it seems.

In addition, the Miofive has what is called EMER recordings, in which the camera will sense an aggressive movement in the event of an accident, hard acceleration, braking, or turning, and then proceed to store the few seconds of video afterwards in the EMER section of the album. In my opinion it is rather sensitive as to what is considered ‘aggressive’ enough to trigger the emergency recording, but it is a useful additional feature to have.

EMER videos were stored for much longer in the app, but I am not too sure whether this is intentional or it is just because there are fewer clips to store. It is worth mentioning now that the camera has up to 64GB of external storage, but this may be less than you think when recording in 4K resolution.

As far as the actual camera quality goes, it does seem to be pretty high quality. It doesn’t quite look like true 4K in my opinion, but the Miofive will definitely provide you with all of the camera quality you need for a mid-range dash camera.

While they do advertise its apparent improved night-vision over other dashcams, you shouldn’t expect to be wildly impressed by it. You won’t be recording many things outside the range of your headlights on darker roads. Rain and glare are nothing to be concerned about, as nothing seemed to impact the focus of the camera as long as it was set up to the right angle and calibrated correctly.

A couple features that I didn’t get any use out of, but are worth mentioning: Parking Guard, Time Lapse, and Photos. With no power being supplied to the camera when the engine is off, your Miofive dash cam will not be able to record any time lapses or parking guard clips. Essentially, you will have to purchase an additional hardware kit to act as a power supply for the camera, otherwise these features are unusable.

Parking Guard is designed to start recording when your camera senses an accident or other disruption with the G-sensor while the car is not in motion. Time lapse functions exactly like you would expect it to, (I can only assume) and both features together will basically act as the loop and EMER recording features while parked. It’s also worth mentioning that photos can be taken with the camera either remotely or directly through the buttons on the LCD display.

AI-Enabled?

While the AI assist features of the camera are pretty useful, the driver assist suggestions can get pretty bothersome. It’s nice to be able to just mount the camera and forget about it.

The camera will automatically start and stop recording on its own, detect accidents and aggressive driving, and can even detect the locations of vehicles in front of you. However, I quickly realized how irritating it can be when the dash cam tells you that you are driving too aggressively at every intersection.

It has a nice little speaker that will tell you to “keep up!” if you are falling behind the traffic ahead or remind you to drive safe when any significant G forces are detected. Fortunately the sensitivity of this can be adjusted like other features but I preferred to mute the voice altogether. If you’re not the smoothest driver or just don’t like being told how to drive by an AI, then you may end up doing the same.

Overview

For a mid-range dash camera, the Miofive is pretty great. It comes with all the tools necessary for the mounting process, tons of cool features, great resolution, decent framerate, a useful and easy-to-use interface and application, and a convenient LCD display.

After the initial mounting process and application setup as well as settings customization, you will never have to think about it until the unlucky scenario of an accident. Or maybe you can just use it to record some cool footage of your fastest lap time with some basic metrics like elevation, distance, and speed. In my opinion $149.99 is a fantastic price when there are plenty of dash cameras doing less and costing twice as much.

E-WIN Champion Series Gaming Chair review

There are many options to consider when choosing an office or gaming chair: comfort, looks, cost, and features. Do you want something modern and sophisticated or might you prefer a classic high-back leather chair worthy of the Mad Men set? Or perhaps you are interested in one of those gaming chairs that seem to be gaining popularity.

I recently had the chance to check out the Champion Series Ergonomic Office Gaming Chair from E-WIN. The chair has the form factor you’d expect from a typical gaming chair but with a fair amount of trappings that come with a high-end office chair.

When it comes to a quality chair experience first and foremost to me is comfort. The Champion Series chair is made with stain-resistant PU leather covering dense cold-cure foam. These two features give it long-lasting comfort and spring in the cushion with the ability to wipe it clean without worrying about marking up the leather.

The padding is plush and reminds me of memory foam. And for personal touches, the chair comes with two detachable and adjustable pillows. One is for the headrest area while the other is a lumbar pillow to ensure you get the proper support and comfort no matter your size.

The E-WIN is not only comfortable and supportive, but the chair also looks great. The design is similar to others in the gaming chair space; it has quality stitching and lines that aren’t distracting.

Even though it’s considered a gaming chair, it fits in perfectly with my traditional desk setup. As you can see in the photos, I was sent the black chair with white accents. There are many color options and patterns on E-WIN’s site so you can get the right look for your setup as well.

There are two levers on the seat bottom for adjusting its height and the tilt. The tilt lever has the ability to lock in different positions so you can set it in place whether you’re typing a school paper or lounging to catch up on some YouTube videos.

There is also lever on the side that controls the adjustable backrest; it has a very wide range of motion from sub 90-degree angles for sitting up really straight to a 155-degrees for those mid-essay nap sessions.

The armrests are also fully adjustable. Sure, you can set the height as one would expect, but you can also adjust the width from side to side and determine how much they face outward. You can also rotate them in and out for maximum loungeability.

Another cool feature is that the wheels have a hub-less design so you get a nice fluid roll from the all-metal bearing system. Oh, and they look cool and futuristic.

Assembly was very simple thanks to the included instructions. They give you all the wrenches you need and also throw in a pair of white gloves so you don’t transfer any bearing or hydraulic grease to the pads of the chair. Little details such as that show that E-WIN cares as much about your purchase as you do.

Conclusion

I’ve been very pleased with E-WIN Gaming Chair and I look forward to seeing more from the brand. It offers up a lot of chair at a very competitive price tag.

It has comfort, intentional design, and a few bells and whistles, too. If you are in the market for a new office or gaming chair, I think E-WIN is a great place to start.

You can learn more about the E-WIN Champion Series Gaming Chair and other products at the manufacturer’s website. Purchase yours in a number of colors with prices starting at $359.

Cleer ARC Open-Ear True Wireless Earbuds review

If you’re looking for a pair of earbuds with great sound quality, the Cleer ARC Earbuds are definitely worth checking out. While they have a somewhat unconventional design, they’re a fairly well-rounded package that tick a few boxes.

Design

The ARC Open-Ear True Wireless Earbuds are comprised of a flexible hinge and earhook and provide a sound that I find to be adjacent to bone-conduction. That is to say they don’t go in your ears and they project the audio a bit.

You’ll have no issues hearing what’s going on around you as there’s plenty of space between the earbud and your ear. If you’re wearing these on the morning commute, or on a jog, they’ll sound almost as if you had traditional earbuds in with the transparency mode activated. Spatial awareness is never an issue.

The earbuds come in a protective case which charges them up; however, the case only holds up to seven hours of battery life total. Whereas most earbuds might yield another couple of charges these do not. That’s about the only major gripe I had with these.

To charge the earbuds you’ll find a small ribbon USB cord inside of the protective case. Pull it out and plug into a laptop or charger and you’ll be good to go before you know it. Just ten minutes on the charger is enough to add an hour of playback.

Audio

Sound is crisp and clear but never overly loud. I found the ARC Open-Ear True Wireless Earbuds offered a well-spaced sound stage but it could use a bit more punch on the low end. Understanding the design doesn’t really allow for a thumping bass experience, it could do a tad better here.

I’ve worn these in a variety of environments and find them to do a great job of allowing ambient noise but never too much. The white noise of an ocean was about the toughest scenario I found myself in. This was when I found it most difficult to pick up audio from a podcast or book. I kept checking to see if I could turn the volume up.

Other Notes

I like the build quality of these earbuds; they feel like they’re constructed from solid materials. And even with the over-ear hook in place, I could still wear sunglasses without any real fatigue.

I might appreciate if the charging case had a removable cable or came with a short USB Type-C cord that could be swapped out. I don’t see any weakness in the ribbon cable, but I feel like people may be prone to accidentally zipping it a time or two and I don’t know how well it would handle over time.

We’re also at a price point where wireless charging is something that could or should be included. Given that the case has a solid bottom to it, I thought it was going to have wireless support, but it does not. I’d be willing to drop another $10-$20 for its inclusion.

Conclusion

All in all, I like these earbuds more than I initially thought I would. They’re lighter and more comfortable to wear than anticipated, and they have a good sound in most environments.

Knowing where these work well and where they don’t, I feel like these are a good solution for working out, running, and daily commutes. You’ll not want these for mowing, sitting near the ocean waves, or in a noisier space as they just can’t compete on volume.

Having seen two different products from Cleer come through our office now, I certainly think it’s a brand worth considering. You can learn more about the ARC Open-Ear True Wireless Earbuds at the Cleer website where you can purchase them in two color options.

EZVIZ C8W Pro 2K: A well-rounded security camera for the everyman

1

Gone are the days of paying a security company tons of money to come to your house and equip it with sensors and cameras. It’s 2022 and consumers are able to piece together a setup that meets their needs and/or budget.

Thanks to brands like EZVIZ, it’s easy to build an affordable system of cameras for both the inside and outside of the home. If you want to blanket your entire property in security cameras, you can do that. Or, if you’d prefer, you can string together something over time that starts in a particular room and then expands.

The EZVIZ C8W Pro 2K is a terrific unit for someone who may be looking to outfit their home with the proverbial “eye in the sky”. Priced just $150, it’s a waterproof (IP65) orb of a device that can be mounted outdoors.

The bottom half of the camera rotates almost completely around, picking up a total 340 degrees field of view. That is to say, it sees everything but the wall it’s mounted on. Additionally, it pans and tilts 80 degrees so it can capture quite a bit of your front yard or driveway.

Tested to handle temperatures up to 140 degrees, the EZVIZ C8W Pro 2K can also withstand a little bit of cold, too. Indeed, it’s rated up to -22 degrees Fahrenheit.

Noteworthy features include automatic tracking, event-triggered capture, detection for humans and vehicles, two-way talk, and local storage of clips. These aren’t necessarily ground-breaking, and definitely aren’t exclusive, but it’s a solid mix of options for the price.

Auto-tracking and detection worked quite well for us in our testing, locking onto moving objects and keeping them in a red outline of a box. It’s not as if you can’t make it out on your own, but we appreciate it showing us how it sees things.

Alerts are relatively quick, notifying us on our device. And while we do like the settings in the app, we’d love to toggle more than one option for notifications. As it is, you can only have it ping you for humans or vehicles, not “either or”. This isn’t much of a factor outside of the driveway but we’d like it nonetheless.

With a 2K resolution, the EZVIZ C8W Pro 2K captures more detail than standard HD (1080p) cameras and thanks to its built-in light, it can produce color night vision.

Fans of automation will be pleased with what’s on offer. You can connect the camera to Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or IFTTT for creating interesting alerts and processes.

When it comes to storing your files, you can save things locally or through the cloud via EZVIZ CloudPlay. Opt for the former and you’ll need to buy a microSD card for a one-time purchase. Go for the latter and you could be looking at the following prices.

  • 3-day event-based video history Monthly: €2.99 (~$3 USD) Yearly: €29.99 (~$30 USD)
  • 7-day event-based video history Monthly: €4.99 (~$5 USD) Yearly: €49.99 (~$50 USD)
  • 30-day event-based video history Monthly: €9.99 (~$10USD) Yearly: €99.99 (~$100 USD)
