Marwan Kheireddine Talks Cryptocurrency and Why Bankrupting Banks Doesnโ€™t Work

0

AM Bank Chairman Marwan Kheireddine acknowledges Lebanon is currently facing challenges. These include addressing how some activists are calling for bankrupting local banks because they are angry that their deposits have been blocked. However, the financial expert doesnโ€™t agree with this idea.

โ€œIn Lebanon, like in other developed countries, for example, the United States, there is a deposit guarantee institution that is owned by the state that protects depositors up to 75 million Lebanese pounds, which today is about $3,000,โ€ Marwan Kheireddine says, โ€œSo essentially, if you bankrupt the banks, like a lot of activists are saying, out of anger, you actually end up hurting depositors, in that those banks, under liquidation, will never be able to repay the deposits back their fair value.โ€

In turn, Marwan Kheireddine says each depositor will be guaranteed by the National Deposit Insurance Corporation of Lebanon, an amount that is equal to, or slightly above, $3,000 โ€” and that is a paltry amount compared to the $100 billion currently on deposit with all Lebanese banks, which are owned by all the Lebanese. โ€œSo I am totally against bankrupting banks, mainly to ensure that depositors, in the long run, end up getting more of their deposits as opposed to less,โ€ he says.

Food Insecurity Is Also Playing a Role in Lebanonโ€™s Latest Struggles

Lebanonโ€™s burgeoning economic crisis continues to flood headlines across Lebanese news channels. The Russia-Ukraine conflict is also adding fire to Lebanonโ€™s distress, as AP News reports that the country is plagued with food shortages and surging oil and food costs.

Al Jazeera reported last year that nearly 80% of Lebanon is living below the poverty line and many citizens have been surviving on bread and tea. The Arabic media outlet also reports that locals are hoping to fix the broken infrastructure and revive industries again in Lebanon.

A UNICEF survey states that four in 10 Lebanese youth used funds for education to instead purchase basic food, medicine, and other daily necessities โ€” and three in 10 stopped their education altogether.

Ettie Higgins, a UNICEF Lebanon representative also says in a press release that Lebanonโ€™s youth are especially deprived of support. โ€œInvestments are needed to ensure that financial concerns do not prevent them from getting the education and skills they need to eventually find decent work and contribute to the stability and prosperity of Lebanon,โ€ she adds.

As the Russia-Ukraine crisis continues to brew, Marwan Kheireddine says its impact on Lebanon, as well as many other countries, is undeniable.

โ€œIt’s had a tremendous negative impact on the Lebanese economy, mostly because we import about 85% of our consumable goods, and we’ve been hit by two major world crises, one after the other โ€” COVID being No. 1 โ€” which have impacted us,โ€ Marwan Kheireddine says. โ€œThe Ukrainian crisis has increased the price of foodstuffs significantly. Energy prices have increased. Food prices have increased and the fact that there are worldwide shortages has made more people go after a limited number of goods, so it has increased their price. Add all of that to the fact that Lebanon consumes about 85% imported products and it gives you a bad scenario.โ€

Marwan Kheireddine Explains How Cryptocurrency Could Affect Lebanonโ€™s Future

Marwan Kheireddine says he also sees a path for cryptocurrency to take in Lebanonโ€™s move to improve its economic situation โ€” but one major thing would have to happen. โ€œThere’s obviously a role that crypto can play in Lebanon, and the Lebanese have been known to be leaders when it comes to embracing new technological advances and new payment methodologies,โ€ Marwan Kheireddine explains. โ€œHowever, in my mind, there’s little chance for crypto to take a significant control in Lebanon’s economy, unless Lebanon’s economy opens back up to the world.โ€

Marwan Kheireddine says Lebanonโ€™s economy is closed off and its government is in default. โ€œWe are unable to move funds freely through the financial system, so in my mind, although a lot of the Lebanese deal with crypto, they do not deal with crypto in any impactful form on the local economy,โ€ Marwan Kheireddine says. โ€œIt’s essentially dealing in crypto outside the economy. Someone might have a portfolio, they might be in for the profit or they might be in to use a crypto as a payment methodology, but it is not directed at the Lebanese economy or the local economy. Mostly the Lebanese and Lebanon has a huge expat community. There are more Lebanese outside Lebanon than in Lebanon. But in my opinion, to see crypto have an impact on the local economy, the local economy needs to open up to the world first.โ€

Nebula Cosmos Laser 4k Projector review

Anker’s sub-brand Nebula has been producing quality projectors for several years now. We are big fans of the Capsule lineup so we were excited when it came time to check out the top tier of the projection line.

Anker was kind enough to allow us several weeks with the Nebula Cosmos Laser 4k; let’s dive into if it’s worth the investment.

Design

The Nebula Cosmos Laser is a tank. Plain and simple. It’s portable in that it has a handle but this thing is not something you want to tote around for long. The overall package is the size of a midsize cooler to me. It’s exceptionally well built, and can be moved around but is not self-powered.

The 2,400 Lumens lens is by far the business end of the unit. The laser-powered lighting offers a much better, and longer-lasting option, than traditional lamp projectors. There’s a cool red ring that really makes the lens housing pop, too. Around this is a more squared array of sensors used to help judge picture depth and auto-focus.

This autofocus keystone is digital and auto zooms the image to the correct size for depth and tries to also align the image to a level position. The sensors also account that you may not want a laser pointed directly into your eye. Anker has built in a motion sensor that dims the beams when the Cosmos Laser 4K detects a person.

Each side is flanked by speaker grills. This allows the 10-Watt dual speakers and two 5-Watt tweeters to fill most environments without the need for another audio connection. If you do want to add another input, both 3.5mm auxiliary and Bluetooth connections are available on the Cosmos.

Connections

A projector does nothing on its own without the correct inputs. On the rear of the Nebula Cosmos Laser 4K you will find a power input, full HDMI, USB-A, and the aforementioned 3.5mm jack. These are essential for any alternative inputs not included in the box outside of the power port.

However, Anker has included its own solution to your media solutions. Above this other input array is a trap door that opens to a two-cabled system. Matching this micro-USB and mini-HDMI to the Anker branded dongle in the box gives you full access to Android TV from Google. It’s an interesting take on not having this component soldered into the Nebula itself.

Performance

Android TV runs great on the Nebula Cosmos Laser 4K. Much like any other dongle, the included one and its remote function as expected. You have full access to the Google Play Store for all your apps. The dongle comes preinstalled with a few like Netflix and Hulu straight out of the packaging.

The projection is also superb. Both the autofocusing keystone and the lighting are some of the best I’ve seen in a projector. The laser beaming makes it much better in harsh daylight conditions and pops even more in a dark atmosphere.

I’ve used the Nebula Cosmos Laser 4K in my den, bonus room, and outdoors. My bonus room is one of the dimmest locations in my home and was great there with the lights turned out. Even in my living room with a ton of natural lights, was very good.

I was even more impressed with the outdoor performance. In the past, other lamp projectors have struggled with autofocus due to the mixed lighting even after dark. Even though you may have no daylight, there’s a ton of “noise” from other homes, street lights, and cars in my neighborhood. The Nebula Cosmos Laser 4K did well above average.

The sound is also well done here. The Nebula Cosmos is pretty solid indoors, especially in a small to medium-sized room. My Nebula Capsule always struggled out on my patio, but the Cosmos Laser 4K was much better in filling that open space with the internal speakers.

Conclusion

Anker has taken the projector game to the next level with the Nebula Cosmos Laser 4K. Even at $2,200, I think the Cosmos competes with other, more expensive options on the market. You get a total package projector in a portable design.

You can snag a Cosmos Laser 4K projector via Nebula’s website, or its retail partner, Amazon.

Edifier MS50A review

The Edifier MS50A is a wireless speaker with a classic design and modern features. It supports both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity and works with Amazon Alexa. How does the $150 speaker handle and, perhaps more importantly, sound? Read on to find out.

Design

The Edifier MS50A looks like the sort of speaker you might have seen growing up in the 1980s or 1990s. By that, I mean it employs both wood and fabric, and doesn’t have any flashy distinguishing characteristics.

With a footprint that calls to mind a thick roll of paper towels, the speaker fits nicely on a tabletop, counter, or stand. The aesthetics are such that it works well with pretty much any environment. It doesn’t beg for attention but it does seem to dress up for the party.

The front face of the speaker is all grille with a silver line that breaks across the middle. The other three sides have a walnut-like wood grain.

Features

When it comes to features and functions, the Edifier MS50A has somewhat of a mixed bag. For instance, while it does work with Amazon Alexa, it doesn’t have a microphone to trigger the digital assistant. You’ll have to use the Amazon Alexa app or another smart device with that capability. But once you do that, you can have your music play on that speaker.

Similarly, the mobile app provides some control over the audio experience but not as much as I expected. You can use it to pair another speaker with it for stereo sound or mutli-room music; however, there is no EQ setting.

Other than those two gripes, there are definitely some things to appreciate in Edifier MS50A. In addition to the Alexa tie-in, the speaker also works natively with Apple Airplay and Spotify.

Further, I really like that it works with both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections. The former works well if you’re looking to listen to an audiobook or your favorite music app. The latter, opens the door to whole-house connected playback. Moreover, if you’re playing music from a phone, you can listen to other audio on your handset. That’s to say it’s not “all or nothing” for music.

There are capacitive buttons on the top of the speaker which give you control over the playback and volume. You can advance and restart tracks by tapping the right and left buttons, respectively. Long pressing the left will go back one track at a time. The play and pause button at the bottom is obvious.

Volume is controlled by placing your finger on the dotted ring and dragging it in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction.

Sound

The Edifier MS50A has a fairly loud sound for its size and I can imagine pairing two of these together could really fill a few rooms with thumping music.

I’ve tried a number of music genres and types of audio including audiobooks, podcasts, EDM, progressive rock, hip hop, and classical music. As a whole I enjoyed the experience.

Lows are definitely represented well and bass-heavy songs do feel punchy. On the high end you’ll find clear and crisp punctuation. As for the middle, it did a generally decent job and only a few isolated times felt crowded or muddy.

Of course it comes down to the music source and sound engineering. Really, the speaker might be better represented by saying that it can point out poorly mixed audio.

Conclusion

Understanding that some manufacturer’s draw a line on including Amazon Alexa and/or Google Assistant, I tend to prefer the latter for my speaker smarts. Furthermore, I would have enjoyed seeing a microphone included so that I could truly get the most out of Alexa.

A few gripes aside, I certainly think the Edifier MS50A justifies its $150 price tag. It looks good in pretty much any environment, never distracting or sticking out. To me, it’s the right blend of modern sophistication and classic design.

The speaker delivers on my expectations for audio sound and quality, and I imagine that pairing multiple units together is better than the sum of its parts.

As someone who knows how expensive it was to fill a home with SONOS speakers back in the day, I feel like this is a great, less expensive alternative. Conversely, it’s a fantastic speaker to switch to Bluetooth mode for cranking music on YouTube Music or a book from Audible.

OnePlus unveils the OnePlus 10T in NYC

0

It’s that time of year. OnePlus has a history of the mid-season refresh of its lineup and especially the mid-range models. Earlier this year we were introduced to the OnePlus 10 and it’s now time for the OnePlus 10T. The company officially unveiled this new device in New York City this morning.

More performance

OnePlus has included the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 processor, up to 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. Combine that with the most advanced cooling system OnePlus has ever created and you have a powerhouse new device. The company claims the new technology allows for up to 35 open apps to run in the background versus only six in previous models.

The OnePlus 10T will also come with improvements to both the WiFi and 5G antenna array. The new 360-degree works in conjunction with a new proprietary Smart Link firmware to make sure you maintain a more consistent signal while on the go. The system is specifically tuned to offer better upload speeds while in congested areas.

Performance bumps also happen inside the screen tech. The variable 120Hz display can ramp up the refresh rate when needed for intensive apps, or save battery when needed by lowering the specs on demand. The OnePlus 10T display is also HDR10+ certified making it a superior visual rendering with a higher threshold of viewing angles.

More power

You can’t have more performance without better endurance. OnePlus has also created its fastest charging on the OnePlus 10T. The new 125W SuperVOOC charger allows for a full day’s charge in less than 10 minutes. It can recharge the 4800mAh battery from dead to a full 100% in less than 20 minutes. This amped-up charging is also split across two internal charging pumps to make sure the power is delivered safely while creating twice the load.

You can also get SuperVOOC charging while away from your home as well. OnePlus is launching a new 80W car charger alongside the 10T. The new adapter boasts a 1-60% boost in 10 minutes with a full charge capable of being replenished in just 29 minutes. The SuperVOOC 80W car charger also includes Power Delivery to make it capable of charging phones, tablets, or even laptops while traveling.

The car charger features one USB-C port with a max output of 30W and a USB-A rated for 80W. If more than one port is being used the combined output can support the maximum 63W.

More Software

The OnePlus 10T will launch with Android 12 running OxygenOS 12.1 at release. The company has already promised this will see a fairly quick update to OxygenOS 13 after it makes its way to the OnePlus 10 Pro. OnePlus is also committing to three major editions of OS updates and four years of security updates to the 10T.

More goodies

A OnePlus event wouldn’t be complete without a few surprises. The company will offer a limited early access window to order the OnePlus 10T on three separate occasions. During August 3-6, 10-13, 17-20, and 24-27 users can log into OnePlus.com to get a chance to order before the official pre-order release on September 1st.

If you get an early access order you will also be instantly upgraded from the 8GB/128GB base model to the more premium combo of 16GB/256GB at the intro of $650. If you miss the early access windows and the official pre-orders on September 1st, the OnePlus 10T will be in retail stores on September 29th including OnePlus.com.

The unibody-designed phone will be made available in two colors. Moonstone Black and Jade Green colorways. We’ve got our hands on the Moonstone Black and will have a review in the next few days after we put it through its paces.

WyreStorm Focus 210 Webcam is a powerful 4K camera for WFH needs

0

Between phones, tablets, Chromebooks and laptops it’s pretty hard to purchase a device that doesn’t have a front-facing camera built into it. They’re everywhere. But that doesn’t mean they’re actually good.

In an age of remote working, Zoom calls, and conferences with teachers, having a quality front-facing camera has become much more important than in years past.

If you’re using the built-in camera from your Chromebook, you’re doing it wrong. It doesn’t matter if it’s a weekly get-together with remote workers or if it’s a daily meetup with your professor; you deserve better.

The WyreStorm Focus 210 Webcam, priced $180, is the 4K camera solution you didn’t know you needed.

WyreStorm Focus 210 Features

  • 120ยฐ Wide-Angle Lens that Captures a Wide Field of View
  • E-PTZ icon. 8x Digital Zoom, ePTZ, Auto Framing, Presenter Tracking
  • AI Backlight Compensation & Low Light Compensation
  • 2x Built-in Mics icon. Dual AI Noise-Cancelling Mics with Max 5m/16ft Pickup Range
  • 90Hz icon Supports 4K/30fps, 1080P/60fps & 720P/90fps
  • WDR icon Supports Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) for Clear Image in Any Light
  • Simpe Control icon Supports Windows/MacOS APP for Video Configuration & Color Adjustment

The WyreStorm Focus 210 brings a lot to the table, starting with its 4K resolution. Not only is it higher than what you’re normally working with, but it opens the door to a better overall experience.

Take, for instance, its 8x digital zoom. While we might normally shy away from digital zooming, it works great with auto-framing and tracking of presenters. Indeed, you can have 60FPS at 1080p or an incredible 90 FPS at 720p.

If you’re among those who find yourself trying to make an office out of a laundry room, you know that sometimes lighting is not ideal. The WyreStorm camera features AI backlight and low-light compensation to help offset your conditions, giving you a chance to look your best in front of the boss.

The aforementioned auto-framing can keep things in center view, keeping up with people as they enter the frame, and even widening out (up to 120 degrees) to allow for multiple attendees. Likewise, the tracking can follow you around should you get up to move about your office.

The WyreStorem Focus 210 houses a pair of noise-cancelling microphones that employ AI to help filter out noise like keyboard strokes, dogs outside, children in another room, or wind from an open window. Best of all, you don’t have to be front and center to be clearly heard. You can actually get up to 16 feet away from the mic to be heard.

The camera works with a whole array of video conferencing and calling programs, including Twitch, Skype, Zoom, Facebook, Microsoft Teams, Webex, BlueJeans, Cisco Webex, Fuze, Google Meet, and GoToMeeting.

Learn more about the Focus 210 Webcam at the WyreStorm website where you can purchase one for $180.

Tribit StormBox Blast Portable Bluetooth Speaker review

Suffice it to say, there is no shortage of options when it comes to portable Bluetooth speakers. There are products from a wide array of brands with features and price points to suit all buyers.

Tribit, a brand we’ve had a chance to profile a few times, is back with another speaker. Whereas the last time we checked out one of its products it was a smaller unit, this time around it’s a boombox-sized speaker designed with block parties and tailgates in mind.

The Tribit StormBox Blast, priced $200, is the sort of speaker you’ll break out for poolside parties, days at the beach, and backyard barbecues. What’s more, it’s designed with evenings and nights in mind, too, as it features 32 LED interactive lights.

If there’s one constant among the Tribit brand, it’s that the sound is always bigger than expected. That’s still the case here as the StormBox Blast gets loud. Real loud. Like, embarrassingly loud.

Our first few days with this speaker we had it in the office, listening to playlists, podcasts, and audiobooks. On occasion we would crank the volume up just to see what it was capable of producing.

We quickly found that we either had to wait until after normal business hours or play it in very small bursts. It didn’t matter what type of music we’d play, we felt like we were being a nuisance if we got about around 40%.

Taking the speaker home, we’ve had it with us inside and out. We tote it around for working in the yard, cleaning house, or cooking on the grill. It provides a crisp, clear sound that stays true even when you dial it way up. It’s also full and evenly distributed with equal representation at the low, mid, and high ends.

You have to get to nearly 100% before you hear any distortion and even then you’re probably not going to notice it unless you’re within close proximity.

Speaking of which, the Bluetooth 5.3 connection made it quick and easy to pair with upwards of 150 feet of range between the speaker and the audio source.

The XBass button does provide a significant boost to bass but we didn’t find it necessary to have on very often. That said, younger demographics who love their thumping music will likely opt for it.

The Tribit StormBox Blast is IPX7 rated against water which means it won’t have to come inside if your day at the beach includes a pop-up storm. Feel free to set it near the pool and let the kids play; it doesn’t mind water whatsoever.

The battery is rated at 30 hours of playback; we found this to be an accurate number. In our first month with the speaker we only had to charge it up twice. And if we’re being transparent, this was a busier month than usual. We don’t normally get that much music and audio in over the span of a typical week.

The 32 LED lights are obviously not something you need in a speaker, but they’re really cool to have. You can toggle a few different modes to either dance to the music or do a pulse-like breathing; colors can be adjusted as well.

We really like having the lights on around dusk as they add a little bit of fun to the atmosphere. If you’re throwing a party, or having a social gathering, you’ll want to break out the tunes and the light show.

You can learn more about the Tribit StormBox Blast at the manufacturer’s website where it’s available to purchase for $200. You can also find it at Amazon where it’s also offered at the same price.

Zhiyun Smooth 5 Gimbal review

We live in an interesting time, one where anyone with a camera and an idea can turn into a content creator. Whether you’re angling to become an influencer, shooting videos for posterity, or creating an online series for personal accountability, your phone is the most important tool in your arsenal.

Depending on what you’re planning to, or currently recording, a gimbal could be right up there in terms of value. When it comes to gimbals for smartphones and DSLR cameras Zhiyun is one of the bigger brands in the space.

We’ve had a chance to spend time with one of its more recent models, the Smooth 5. Available for $169 on its own or $219 as part of a bundle, the Zhiyun Smooth 5 is a 3-axis smartphone gimbal.

Setup & Design

The setup process is fairly simple, taking just a few steps to unlock the tilt, pan, and roll axis. The pan axis lock, for its part, is a physical switch on the rear just above the USB-C port. The tilt and roll axis mechanisms unlock by rotating the arm to move the nub from its beveled lock.

When you expand the smartphone clamp you’ll find it has rubber braces on on each side and when you insert your phone it’s done with the rear cameras facing from you. The clamp has soft rubber that embraces your phone without any scuffs, and a deeper ridge helps to secure bigger devices.

The gimbal houses a number of buttons and dials, including the large focus/zoom wheel on the left side. Also present are the power button, function button, and a threaded hole for a stabilizer or extension bar.

On front side of the gimbal you’ll locate the mode indicator light, menu, mode, and capture buttons, a joystick, adjustment wheel and center fill light button. Four buttons around the wheel adjust resolution/frame rate, ISO/exposure, display and photo album.

Once powered on, the Zhiyun Smooth 5 motors will attempt to balance things, and it does a fairly solid job of it. In nearly every instance we found it calibrated properly and quickly. Should you run into an issue, or feel it’s not precise, you can move the arms or reposition your phone to fine tune things.

Now that the phone is good to go, turn on the ZY Cami app on your phone so you can control the experience. That is if you want to get the most from your gimbal. You can use the gimbal with any camera app you want, but using the one that Zhiyun recommends works best with the Smooth 5. Which brings us to the software aspect.

Software

While you can use the gimbal alone as a stabilizer or tripod for your phone, you’ll get more control, effects and options in the ZY Cami app. Available for both Android and iOS, it provide settings for capture and editing, including pano, dolly zoom, hyperlapse, and time lapse.

The primary reason to use a smartphone gimbal is to capture smooth video content, and the app does that very well. Using Pan Follow Mode you’ll find the tilt and roll axis motors are locked, with the pan axis following any movement.

Follow Mode locks the roll axis and follows subjects with the tilt and pan axis motors doing the work. Lock Mode locks all three of the motors. There are a few other options, too, so feel free to play around with it.

The ZY Cami app has a rather interesting editor that lets you edit captured video directly from the phone. Options here include standard stuff like trimming, adjusting speed, reverse the image, and rotation as well as adding music, stickers, or subtitles, zoom, filters, and color adjustments.

If you purchase the Zhiyun Smooth 5 as part of the combo package, you’ll get a year of Prime service for online editing, templates, and cloud storage. Zhiyun also provides user guides and tutorials in the mobile app; content from different creators is also available should you need a little inspiration.

Performance and Conclusion

We shot a number of videos using the Zhiyun Smooth 5, trying various phones to see if that made a difference. As it turns out, using the app on a semi-recent handset yields pretty much the same results.

All of the handsets we tried fit snugly and securely in place and, in nearly every instance, without having to remove the protective case. The different weights in phones and button orientations did not seem to present a problem either as the gimbal is designed with that in mind.

The Zhiyun Smooth 5 folds down into a compact unit that travels rather easily. It fits well in a bag or tucked into a backpack and the build quality signals to us that it’s not likely going to fall apart on us anytime soon.

via Zhiyun

We’ve spent time with more simple (read: fewer features) gimbals in the past and might recommend them for a first-time user or someone who’s not looking for much. It might be a bit overwhelming if this is your first foray in the world of gimbals.

On the other hand, we invite you to give yourself some time to learn the features and functions of the Smooth 5. There are a lot of controls and options at your disposal and once you get to understand them, you’ll find they can be rather valuable for content creation.

If you’re looking for a smartphone gimbal with a solid set of tools and capabilities, you’d be wise to consider the Zhiyun Smooth 5. There’s something to be said about getting what you pay for, especially if you’re deliberate about creating specific shots or videos.

Availability

The Zhiyun Smooth 5 is available for $169 in a box that includes the stabilizer/gimbal, a tripod attachment, and the USB type-C cable. For $219 you’ll also pick up a wrist strap, a fill light, a set of four light filters, a membership card, and a protective bag.

Do I need to use AT&T to submit an AT&T unlock request?

0

A heavyweight in the US cellphone market, if you havenโ€™t got an AT&T device now, chances are youโ€™ve had one in the past. One of the largest telecommunications operators in the States, it absorbs around half of the US wireless subscriptions market, with 200 million (plus) wireless subscribers worldwide. And, as a key player on the field, being tied to the AT&T network comes with big benefits. High data caps, solid 4G coverage (and a fast-moving 5G rollout), lots of choice and good download speeds all make it a compelling choice for many. But not everyone. And if youโ€™re one of those 200 million AT&T subscribers and thinking of changing to another carrier, youโ€™re not alone. So, what’s stopping you? The lock on your phone is probably the only thing standing in your way. The simplest solution? Unlock your phone.

How? We thought youโ€™d never askโ€ฆ

Read more about it on the mobileunlocked.com AT&T phone unlock device guide. It has full details to unlock your AT&T phone using an independent phone unlocking service, without dealing with AT&T at all. And the reasons for wanting to do this. But first, a bit of background.

Why is there a lock on my phone?

Good question. In 2013, President Obama introduced the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act in America. Its aim? To make unlocking phones legal across the US. While this is good news for consumers (you), it didn’t stop network providers from locking phones in the first place. Which means it’s still pretty typical for phones to be locked to a network, at least for the first few months into a contract. And still up to you to remove that lock if you want to change carrier.

How does the lock work? Another good question. Hidden away in the back-end of your device, a SIM lock, network lock, carrier lock or master subsidy lock (they all mean the same thing) is a software code that tells your phone to connect only to a specific network. It’s not something you can see or remove simply by fiddling around with the keypad on your phone. And that’s what makes it so powerful.

But whatโ€™s the purpose behind the lock and why does it matter? Ask your phone provider and they’ll say it’s to do with security. Look up their phone unlocking policy and chances are you’ll find it under the ‘Customer Safety’ section on their website. The rationale behind this? The premise is that a locked phone is worth less than an unlocked phone. And, because of this, a deterrent to thieves. There is some credibility to this, yes. But it’s not the whole (or even a big part of the) story. The clue’s in the name, really. A locked phone keeps customers captive by holding them (against their will) to a network they may no longer want to use. And what does this equate to? Money. Because by locking a phone not only do you hold onto their custom, but you hold onto their money. Which, in turn, drives profits.

So… a deterrent for thieves or a way of boosting the bottom line? We know which answer we’re tied to.

What’s not to like about AT&T?

We touched on some of the benefits of belonging to a major network like AT&T. But like everything it’s got its downsides. There’s cost for one. AT&T plans can be significantly more expensive than others on the market. You may get more data, but you pay the price for it (especially if you don’t actually need or use all of that data). Coverage too can be an issue. While AT&Tโ€™s network is comprehensive, reaching about 68% of the US (around 84% if you include its 5G network), there are signal black spots, particularly in rural areas. So if you’re not in a highly populated metropolitan location, you may benefit from using a different or more localized carrier. Then there’s streaming. Using AT&T, video streaming quality, (particularly on-the-go), isn’t the best. Even if you pay extra for a high definition service.

So, there you go. All pretty compelling reasons for wanting to leave AT&T. But how to do it? Letโ€™s look at the options for unlocking your phone.

How not to unlock your AT&T phone

You may think that because your phone’s tied to the AT&T network, you need to go through them if you want to remove the lock. It’s a fair assumption. But it’s not true. In fact, this is often the most complicated, stressful and admin-heavy way of doing things. Here’s why:

  • First, you’ll need to do the advance prep. Before you can start the process you’ll need to make sure you comply with their eligibility requirements. These differ according to the type of plan you have (postpaid, prepaid or business device) so you’ll have to factor this research into your pre-lock prep too.
  • Next you’ll need to provide AT&T with all of the required account information needed to submit the request.
  • Having submitted the information and the unlock request, you’ll then need to wait for AT&T to approve your request.
  • And then wait some more for them to confirm and process it. (Spoiler: This can take anything from two business days to a week or so.)
  • Once this is all complete, you’ll need to wait for specific instructions on how to unlock your device.

All that done, you’ll finally be in a position to try and unlock your device. Sounds unnecessarily complicated? It is.

Harness the power of your phone’s IMEI number

You can bypass all the admin and agro associated with unlocking your phone through AT&T, by using a third-party provider. Experts in their field, they have the software and the processes in place to fast-track your unlock request with minimal input on your side. In fact, all they need is your phone’s IMEI number, a 15-digit code unique to your device. The good news is, as long as you have your phone to-hand, your IMEI is quick and easy to find. To locate it you can do either of the following:

  • Type *#06# into your cell phone keypad.
  • Go to the ‘Settings/About Phone/Status/IMEI Information’ menu on your Android or iPhone.
  • Remove the battery and look on the white label underneath.

Simply share this with your mobile phone unlocking service provider and they’ll do the rest. Depending on the make of your phone, your unlock will either take place automatically “over-the-air” using wifi (this goes for iPhones and other Apple devices) or you’ll be sent an unlock code to input (the process for Android models). The beauty of this is that, as well as being easy, it’s fast and safe because everything takes place online. No forms to fill in. No on-hold calls to AT&T’s customer service team. No break in service (your phone stays with you the whole time).

It’s all about choice

Whether it’s a cheaper deal, better coverage, high definition streaming or just to go SIM-only, with so much choice available, why stick around? Unlocking your AT&T device means you don’t have to compromise. And if you get help from the right source, it’s a pretty painless process. Yes, you can go through AT&T to unlock your device. But if speed, security and simplicity are what you’re after, using an online unlocking service wins hands-down.
