WyreStorm Focus 210 Webcam is a powerful 4K camera for WFH needs

0

Between phones, tablets, Chromebooks and laptops it’s pretty hard to purchase a device that doesn’t have a front-facing camera built into it. They’re everywhere. But that doesn’t mean they’re actually good.

In an age of remote working, Zoom calls, and conferences with teachers, having a quality front-facing camera has become much more important than in years past.

If you’re using the built-in camera from your Chromebook, you’re doing it wrong. It doesn’t matter if it’s a weekly get-together with remote workers or if it’s a daily meetup with your professor; you deserve better.

The WyreStorm Focus 210 Webcam, priced $180, is the 4K camera solution you didn’t know you needed.

WyreStorm Focus 210 Features

  • 120ยฐ Wide-Angle Lens that Captures a Wide Field of View
  • E-PTZ icon. 8x Digital Zoom, ePTZ, Auto Framing, Presenter Tracking
  • AI Backlight Compensation & Low Light Compensation
  • 2x Built-in Mics icon. Dual AI Noise-Cancelling Mics with Max 5m/16ft Pickup Range
  • 90Hz icon Supports 4K/30fps, 1080P/60fps & 720P/90fps
  • WDR icon Supports Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) for Clear Image in Any Light
  • Simpe Control icon Supports Windows/MacOS APP for Video Configuration & Color Adjustment

The WyreStorm Focus 210 brings a lot to the table, starting with its 4K resolution. Not only is it higher than what you’re normally working with, but it opens the door to a better overall experience.

Take, for instance, its 8x digital zoom. While we might normally shy away from digital zooming, it works great with auto-framing and tracking of presenters. Indeed, you can have 60FPS at 1080p or an incredible 90 FPS at 720p.

If you’re among those who find yourself trying to make an office out of a laundry room, you know that sometimes lighting is not ideal. The WyreStorm camera features AI backlight and low-light compensation to help offset your conditions, giving you a chance to look your best in front of the boss.

The aforementioned auto-framing can keep things in center view, keeping up with people as they enter the frame, and even widening out (up to 120 degrees) to allow for multiple attendees. Likewise, the tracking can follow you around should you get up to move about your office.

The WyreStorem Focus 210 houses a pair of noise-cancelling microphones that employ AI to help filter out noise like keyboard strokes, dogs outside, children in another room, or wind from an open window. Best of all, you don’t have to be front and center to be clearly heard. You can actually get up to 16 feet away from the mic to be heard.

The camera works with a whole array of video conferencing and calling programs, including Twitch, Skype, Zoom, Facebook, Microsoft Teams, Webex, BlueJeans, Cisco Webex, Fuze, Google Meet, and GoToMeeting.

Tribit StormBox Blast Portable Bluetooth Speaker review

Suffice it to say, there is no shortage of options when it comes to portable Bluetooth speakers. There are products from a wide array of brands with features and price points to suit all buyers.

Tribit, a brand we’ve had a chance to profile a few times, is back with another speaker. Whereas the last time we checked out one of its products it was a smaller unit, this time around it’s a boombox-sized speaker designed with block parties and tailgates in mind.

The Tribit StormBox Blast, priced $200, is the sort of speaker you’ll break out for poolside parties, days at the beach, and backyard barbecues. What’s more, it’s designed with evenings and nights in mind, too, as it features 32 LED interactive lights.

If there’s one constant among the Tribit brand, it’s that the sound is always bigger than expected. That’s still the case here as the StormBox Blast gets loud. Real loud. Like, embarrassingly loud.

Our first few days with this speaker we had it in the office, listening to playlists, podcasts, and audiobooks. On occasion we would crank the volume up just to see what it was capable of producing.

We quickly found that we either had to wait until after normal business hours or play it in very small bursts. It didn’t matter what type of music we’d play, we felt like we were being a nuisance if we got about around 40%.

Taking the speaker home, we’ve had it with us inside and out. We tote it around for working in the yard, cleaning house, or cooking on the grill. It provides a crisp, clear sound that stays true even when you dial it way up. It’s also full and evenly distributed with equal representation at the low, mid, and high ends.

You have to get to nearly 100% before you hear any distortion and even then you’re probably not going to notice it unless you’re within close proximity.

Speaking of which, the Bluetooth 5.3 connection made it quick and easy to pair with upwards of 150 feet of range between the speaker and the audio source.

The XBass button does provide a significant boost to bass but we didn’t find it necessary to have on very often. That said, younger demographics who love their thumping music will likely opt for it.

The Tribit StormBox Blast is IPX7 rated against water which means it won’t have to come inside if your day at the beach includes a pop-up storm. Feel free to set it near the pool and let the kids play; it doesn’t mind water whatsoever.

The battery is rated at 30 hours of playback; we found this to be an accurate number. In our first month with the speaker we only had to charge it up twice. And if we’re being transparent, this was a busier month than usual. We don’t normally get that much music and audio in over the span of a typical week.

The 32 LED lights are obviously not something you need in a speaker, but they’re really cool to have. You can toggle a few different modes to either dance to the music or do a pulse-like breathing; colors can be adjusted as well.

We really like having the lights on around dusk as they add a little bit of fun to the atmosphere. If you’re throwing a party, or having a social gathering, you’ll want to break out the tunes and the light show.

You can learn more about the Tribit StormBox Blast at the manufacturer’s website where it’s available to purchase for $200. You can also find it at Amazon where it’s also offered at the same price.

Zhiyun Smooth 5 Gimbal review

We live in an interesting time, one where anyone with a camera and an idea can turn into a content creator. Whether you’re angling to become an influencer, shooting videos for posterity, or creating an online series for personal accountability, your phone is the most important tool in your arsenal.

Depending on what you’re planning to, or currently recording, a gimbal could be right up there in terms of value. When it comes to gimbals for smartphones and DSLR cameras Zhiyun is one of the bigger brands in the space.

We’ve had a chance to spend time with one of its more recent models, the Smooth 5. Available for $169 on its own or $219 as part of a bundle, the Zhiyun Smooth 5 is a 3-axis smartphone gimbal.

Setup & Design

The setup process is fairly simple, taking just a few steps to unlock the tilt, pan, and roll axis. The pan axis lock, for its part, is a physical switch on the rear just above the USB-C port. The tilt and roll axis mechanisms unlock by rotating the arm to move the nub from its beveled lock.

When you expand the smartphone clamp you’ll find it has rubber braces on on each side and when you insert your phone it’s done with the rear cameras facing from you. The clamp has soft rubber that embraces your phone without any scuffs, and a deeper ridge helps to secure bigger devices.

The gimbal houses a number of buttons and dials, including the large focus/zoom wheel on the left side. Also present are the power button, function button, and a threaded hole for a stabilizer or extension bar.

On front side of the gimbal you’ll locate the mode indicator light, menu, mode, and capture buttons, a joystick, adjustment wheel and center fill light button. Four buttons around the wheel adjust resolution/frame rate, ISO/exposure, display and photo album.

Once powered on, the Zhiyun Smooth 5 motors will attempt to balance things, and it does a fairly solid job of it. In nearly every instance we found it calibrated properly and quickly. Should you run into an issue, or feel it’s not precise, you can move the arms or reposition your phone to fine tune things.

Now that the phone is good to go, turn on the ZY Cami app on your phone so you can control the experience. That is if you want to get the most from your gimbal. You can use the gimbal with any camera app you want, but using the one that Zhiyun recommends works best with the Smooth 5. Which brings us to the software aspect.

Software

While you can use the gimbal alone as a stabilizer or tripod for your phone, you’ll get more control, effects and options in the ZY Cami app. Available for both Android and iOS, it provide settings for capture and editing, including pano, dolly zoom, hyperlapse, and time lapse.

The primary reason to use a smartphone gimbal is to capture smooth video content, and the app does that very well. Using Pan Follow Mode you’ll find the tilt and roll axis motors are locked, with the pan axis following any movement.

Follow Mode locks the roll axis and follows subjects with the tilt and pan axis motors doing the work. Lock Mode locks all three of the motors. There are a few other options, too, so feel free to play around with it.

The ZY Cami app has a rather interesting editor that lets you edit captured video directly from the phone. Options here include standard stuff like trimming, adjusting speed, reverse the image, and rotation as well as adding music, stickers, or subtitles, zoom, filters, and color adjustments.

If you purchase the Zhiyun Smooth 5 as part of the combo package, you’ll get a year of Prime service for online editing, templates, and cloud storage. Zhiyun also provides user guides and tutorials in the mobile app; content from different creators is also available should you need a little inspiration.

Performance and Conclusion

We shot a number of videos using the Zhiyun Smooth 5, trying various phones to see if that made a difference. As it turns out, using the app on a semi-recent handset yields pretty much the same results.

All of the handsets we tried fit snugly and securely in place and, in nearly every instance, without having to remove the protective case. The different weights in phones and button orientations did not seem to present a problem either as the gimbal is designed with that in mind.

The Zhiyun Smooth 5 folds down into a compact unit that travels rather easily. It fits well in a bag or tucked into a backpack and the build quality signals to us that it’s not likely going to fall apart on us anytime soon.

via Zhiyun

We’ve spent time with more simple (read: fewer features) gimbals in the past and might recommend them for a first-time user or someone who’s not looking for much. It might be a bit overwhelming if this is your first foray in the world of gimbals.

On the other hand, we invite you to give yourself some time to learn the features and functions of the Smooth 5. There are a lot of controls and options at your disposal and once you get to understand them, you’ll find they can be rather valuable for content creation.

If you’re looking for a smartphone gimbal with a solid set of tools and capabilities, you’d be wise to consider the Zhiyun Smooth 5. There’s something to be said about getting what you pay for, especially if you’re deliberate about creating specific shots or videos.

Availability

The Zhiyun Smooth 5 is available for $169 in a box that includes the stabilizer/gimbal, a tripod attachment, and the USB type-C cable. For $219 you’ll also pick up a wrist strap, a fill light, a set of four light filters, a membership card, and a protective bag.

Do I need to use AT&T to submit an AT&T unlock request?

0

A heavyweight in the US cellphone market, if you havenโ€™t got an AT&T device now, chances are youโ€™ve had one in the past. One of the largest telecommunications operators in the States, it absorbs around half of the US wireless subscriptions market, with 200 million (plus) wireless subscribers worldwide. And, as a key player on the field, being tied to the AT&T network comes with big benefits. High data caps, solid 4G coverage (and a fast-moving 5G rollout), lots of choice and good download speeds all make it a compelling choice for many. But not everyone. And if youโ€™re one of those 200 million AT&T subscribers and thinking of changing to another carrier, youโ€™re not alone. So, what’s stopping you? The lock on your phone is probably the only thing standing in your way. The simplest solution? Unlock your phone.

How? We thought youโ€™d never askโ€ฆ

Read more about it on the mobileunlocked.com AT&T phone unlock device guide. It has full details to unlock your AT&T phone using an independent phone unlocking service, without dealing with AT&T at all. And the reasons for wanting to do this. But first, a bit of background.

Why is there a lock on my phone?

Good question. In 2013, President Obama introduced the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act in America. Its aim? To make unlocking phones legal across the US. While this is good news for consumers (you), it didn’t stop network providers from locking phones in the first place. Which means it’s still pretty typical for phones to be locked to a network, at least for the first few months into a contract. And still up to you to remove that lock if you want to change carrier.

How does the lock work? Another good question. Hidden away in the back-end of your device, a SIM lock, network lock, carrier lock or master subsidy lock (they all mean the same thing) is a software code that tells your phone to connect only to a specific network. It’s not something you can see or remove simply by fiddling around with the keypad on your phone. And that’s what makes it so powerful.

But whatโ€™s the purpose behind the lock and why does it matter? Ask your phone provider and they’ll say it’s to do with security. Look up their phone unlocking policy and chances are you’ll find it under the ‘Customer Safety’ section on their website. The rationale behind this? The premise is that a locked phone is worth less than an unlocked phone. And, because of this, a deterrent to thieves. There is some credibility to this, yes. But it’s not the whole (or even a big part of the) story. The clue’s in the name, really. A locked phone keeps customers captive by holding them (against their will) to a network they may no longer want to use. And what does this equate to? Money. Because by locking a phone not only do you hold onto their custom, but you hold onto their money. Which, in turn, drives profits.

So… a deterrent for thieves or a way of boosting the bottom line? We know which answer we’re tied to.

What’s not to like about AT&T?

We touched on some of the benefits of belonging to a major network like AT&T. But like everything it’s got its downsides. There’s cost for one. AT&T plans can be significantly more expensive than others on the market. You may get more data, but you pay the price for it (especially if you don’t actually need or use all of that data). Coverage too can be an issue. While AT&Tโ€™s network is comprehensive, reaching about 68% of the US (around 84% if you include its 5G network), there are signal black spots, particularly in rural areas. So if you’re not in a highly populated metropolitan location, you may benefit from using a different or more localized carrier. Then there’s streaming. Using AT&T, video streaming quality, (particularly on-the-go), isn’t the best. Even if you pay extra for a high definition service.

So, there you go. All pretty compelling reasons for wanting to leave AT&T. But how to do it? Letโ€™s look at the options for unlocking your phone.

How not to unlock your AT&T phone

You may think that because your phone’s tied to the AT&T network, you need to go through them if you want to remove the lock. It’s a fair assumption. But it’s not true. In fact, this is often the most complicated, stressful and admin-heavy way of doing things. Here’s why:

  • First, you’ll need to do the advance prep. Before you can start the process you’ll need to make sure you comply with their eligibility requirements. These differ according to the type of plan you have (postpaid, prepaid or business device) so you’ll have to factor this research into your pre-lock prep too.
  • Next you’ll need to provide AT&T with all of the required account information needed to submit the request.
  • Having submitted the information and the unlock request, you’ll then need to wait for AT&T to approve your request.
  • And then wait some more for them to confirm and process it. (Spoiler: This can take anything from two business days to a week or so.)
  • Once this is all complete, you’ll need to wait for specific instructions on how to unlock your device.

All that done, you’ll finally be in a position to try and unlock your device. Sounds unnecessarily complicated? It is.

Harness the power of your phone’s IMEI number

You can bypass all the admin and agro associated with unlocking your phone through AT&T, by using a third-party provider. Experts in their field, they have the software and the processes in place to fast-track your unlock request with minimal input on your side. In fact, all they need is your phone’s IMEI number, a 15-digit code unique to your device. The good news is, as long as you have your phone to-hand, your IMEI is quick and easy to find. To locate it you can do either of the following:

  • Type *#06# into your cell phone keypad.
  • Go to the ‘Settings/About Phone/Status/IMEI Information’ menu on your Android or iPhone.
  • Remove the battery and look on the white label underneath.

Simply share this with your mobile phone unlocking service provider and they’ll do the rest. Depending on the make of your phone, your unlock will either take place automatically “over-the-air” using wifi (this goes for iPhones and other Apple devices) or you’ll be sent an unlock code to input (the process for Android models). The beauty of this is that, as well as being easy, it’s fast and safe because everything takes place online. No forms to fill in. No on-hold calls to AT&T’s customer service team. No break in service (your phone stays with you the whole time).

It’s all about choice

Whether it’s a cheaper deal, better coverage, high definition streaming or just to go SIM-only, with so much choice available, why stick around? Unlocking your AT&T device means you don’t have to compromise. And if you get help from the right source, it’s a pretty painless process. Yes, you can go through AT&T to unlock your device. But if speed, security and simplicity are what you’re after, using an online unlocking service wins hands-down.

West Slope Case is your rugged all-weather phone protector

0

As temperatures continue to rise all over the place there’s no doubt that summer is in full effect. It’s incredibly hot out there and that’s potentially dangerous for a lot of people. And as some of you may already know, heat isn’t exactly kind to phones, either.

Have you ever found your handset prompting you with a warning about its temperature or that it’s disabling features because it’s too hot? That’s because heat can permanently damage your beloved phone.

On the other end of the spectrum are those extremely cold conditions. Indeed, it’s not just frostbite that you need to worry about as frigid weather can lock a phone up, too. Blame it on those pesky lithium ion batteries.

Then there’s always the threat of water. Sure, your phone might be water resistant or able to take a bath for a few minutes, but what happens if it goes sliding off the side of a boat when you’re out on the lake? It’s not going to float back up to the surface anytime soon.

The West Slope Case, from Cold Case Gear, is the solution to all three of those problems. Priced $60, it’s a thermal pouch that fits pretty much any handset out there, even those that may already have a case on them.

Whether you’re heading out for a day at the beach or planning a trip down the slopes, you’ll want your phone within reach. Thanks to thermal protective pouch you can put your handset inside and use it for listening to music or podcasts, have it on standby for calls, or simply relax knowing your device is accessible.

The West Slope Case is not only waterproof but it floats, too. That’s right, should it go tumbling out of your canoe you won’t have to worry about it sinking to the bottom of a river. And if you want to be extra safe, you can clip the case to your backpack or kayak.

Made in the US, Cold Case Gear has constructed this case with Aerogel Insulation that keeps your phone warm in temperatures as low as -40 degrees. Likewise, it can handle blistering temps as high as 120 degrees, too.

There are no seams or stitches or any entry points for dirt or debris. The only way in and out is through the airtight magnetic closure. The lightweight (3.1oz) pouch is 100% waterproof and submersible up to six feet. And best of all, it’s backed by a lifetime warranty.

If you are having problems completing your papers and homework, use your gadget to visit sites that can help you with that. Using such services is great because it allows students to concentrate on their studies and other extracurricular activities.

Keep Track of Your Calendar
