Gamesir X3 Controller review

1

What do you think of when someone uses the term “mobile gaming”? Does you mind go to casual timewasters like Candy Crush Saga, Angry Birds, Tetris, and Wordle? Or, do you conjure up imagery of a dedicated phone designed for first-person shooters like Call of Duty or Fortnite?

Mobile gaming comes in all shapes and sizes, and everyone’s definition is a little bit different. I’m not a huge fan of the bigger graphics-intense stuff that’s often mobile variants of console titles. Why? It’s not because I don’t have a phone powerful enough to handle the task. No, it’s because I don’t like having to use a flat screen when multiple buttons and directional pads are in order.

Gamesir, a player (see what I did there?) in the gaming space, is back with another mobile gaming controller. The new X3 Type-C controller, priced around $100, builds on the X2 which we reviewed earlier in the year. Having started out as a prototype for crowdfunding, it blew through its goal and hit the fast track for public release.

In short, the Gamesir X3 is an accessory that you connect to your phone via its USB Type-C port. Once in place, it turns your handset into a Nintendo Switch-like experience. It’s only available in one color, white, with red and blue accents that only further the Nintendo comparison.

One of the biggest differences in the new model is the addition of a cooling fan on the back of the device. It’s centrally located and doesn’t affect the way you have to hold or operate the controller. It’s also very quiet, and doesn’t distract from your gaming sessions. Oh, it also looks pretty cool when it lights up, too.

The trade-off, though, is that the fan only works when the Gamesir X3 is plugged in to an external power source. This can impact where gamers can take advantage of the cooling feature so keep that in mind if you plan to play for extended periods.

The X3 employs a spring-loaded mechanism that pulls apart on both sides so you can drop your handset in quickly and without hassle. According to Gamesir, it can handle most phones between 110mm -179mm in height. That is to say, it worked on everything we had here in the office.

When you put your phone in you’ll find there’s a bit of play with the USB Type-C connector which sort of pivots a bit. This is intentional and helps ensure you don’t snap anything off.

As far as buttons are concerned, I really like what the Gamesir X3 has on offer. They’re very tactile and clicky with the right amount of travel and noise.

The D-pad has been adjusted to better work in eight directions; there are two options for its button in the box. You can change them out instantly based on whether you want a traditional directional pad or something with a diamond-like pattern that breaks over the eight directions. Think Nintendo Switch and Xbox and you’ll get it.

In addition to the extra D-pad button you’ll also find extra thumbsticks. They’re slightly taller than what’s already in place and may be noticeably better (or worse) for your gaming. Want all red or all blue? Mix and match? Do it however you’d like. Magnets make changing things up a real breeze.

Also included in the box are four rubber covers which add a degree of texture and grip. Should you not like the way your thumbs slide over the sticks you can slide the covers on and get more traction.

The Gamesir X3 has texture on the back where your hands might rest. It’s subtle stuff but makes a difference over the long haul. Hands get sweaty when you’re one of the last remaining players in a battle royale game.

Along those lines, I would have liked it if the fan worked without having to be plugged in. Gaming on the go doesn’t always allow for an external power source, or an outlet that’s close enough. Make sure you’ve got a nice long cable on hand; there’s a fairly nice one included in the box.

It’s worth reminding here that the Gamesir X3 connects directly to your phone via the USB Type-C port and does not allow for Bluetooth. It’s not too much of an issue now that most phones have the USB C port plus there’s no latency to worry about.

Conclusion

While I typically shy away from more intense games on my phone, I’ve found myself using the Gamesir X3 more than I expected. There’s a fairly robust list of compatible titles to choose from and many of them allow for remapping of buttons and customizing the experience.

There’s a lot to like about the controller as it feels intentionally designed and created with care. The extra buttons, cooling fan, and textured grips lead to long sessions of enjoyable and comfortable gaming.

Learn more about the Gamesir X3 Type-C controller at the manufacturer’s website where you can purchase it for $100. There are other options available to choose from as well which have different price points and features. You’ll also find keyboards, mice, and other accessories.

Need to pick up a new pair of wireless earbuds as you settle into a “new normal” this fall? Whether it’s commuting to and from work, chilling in the lounge between classes, or getting in some yard work, having music in your ears can make a big difference.

You don’t need to drop a bunch of money to get your hands on something decent. In fact, there are a few brands who specialize in offering low-cost products with a decent suite of hardware. SOUNDPEATS, for instance, has built its portfolio around earbuds that run less than $100.

We’ve had two different models of SOUNDPEATS earbuds (Free2 classic, Mini Pro) here in the office for a couple of weeks. Priced just $30 and $60, respectively, I feel they’re definitely worth a look.

By no means are these to be considered premium earbuds or high-end models. But, they definitely punch above their weight. I’d much rather recommend these over other lesser-known brands with similar price points.

SOUNDPEATS Free2 classic ($30)

If you’re only after the basics and you don’t care too much about special features, the Free 2 classic are a good get for $30.

You’ll have up to eight hours of playback per charge with upwards of 30 hours total when including the carrying case. The earbuds are IPX5 rated against water meaning workout sweat and splashes won’t have an impact.

Features

  • Stylish leather texture appearance & Comfortable fit
  • Long battery life for 8 hours playtime per charge
  • The superior sound delivered by a 6mm bio-compound diaphragm driver
  • Flawless call & Multi-functional touch control

SOUNDPEATS Mini Pro ($60)

Step things up a smidge in pretty much all areas and you end up here – and that’s a pretty nice spot, especially considering the price. The earbuds and the case are a bit higher quality as is the box that they come in. They just feel better.

Enjoy cool features like support for codec like Qualcomm aptX, aptX-Adaptive, and SBC as well as Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity. With a low latency of 60ms in game mode, the standard experience is a very respectable 80ms. They just sound better, too.

Turonic PH950 Air Purifier Review

0

For those that don’t know, Turonic is the home division of Productech. We cover the company’s audio sibling, Treblab, on a regular basis and took a shot at the new PH950 Air Purifier. Turonic was nice enough to give us over a month with this unit and I have to say I’m impressed.

Design

The Turonic PH950 looks like you’d expect in that the appliance is a vertical white box designed to sit in your room. The appearance has a futuristic styling with hard lines mixed with curved corners and metallic-themed plastic trimmings.

Internally, you have two bays: one for air purification and another for the additional humidifier tank. The main cavity of the PH950 houses the air filtration system. This includes an 8-stage mesh prefilter, cotton filter, true HEPA filter air purifier, activated carbon, and cold catalyst filter, as well as a humidifier, UV light, and air ionizer.

Below the main filtration cabin is a humidifier. This house the water reservoir and another filter to add humidity back into the room during the dry times of the day.

Daily Use

This creates a system perfect for users like myself. I struggle with seasonal allergies that a brutal in my home state of Tennessee. Add that to having dogs in my home, and something like the Turonic can come in handy.

The PH950 comes with numerous modes to help alleviate the elements floating around your home. There’s a touch dial at the top of the purifier. This allows you to navigate through these modes.

While there are several to choose from, I’ve landed on letting the system do the work. With Auto mode, the Turonic PH950 uses internal sensors to gauge the surroundings. The purifier then activates the correct modes and filters to clean your air quality.

You can also pair the Turnonic PH950 to your phone via the Android app. This gives you the same controls on-demand from your mobile device. It also adds features like scheduling that you can’t pull off with just the onboard PH950 controls.

The company estimates that each filter should last around a month. In my testing, I found that to be accurate. Just around the first month of full usage, the system let me know that the filter was ready for a change.

However, this presented my only glaring issue with the Turonic PH950. At least temporarily, you can’t purchase a replacement air filter. The stock is currently missing on both Amazon and Turonic’s websites.

Conclusion

Turonic offers a complete home solution in the PH950. The combination of HEPA air filtration and humidifier makes it a worthy addition to anyone’s home. If the stock can be replenished for the missing filters and it’s a no-brainer.

The Turonic PH950 can be yours for $480 on Amazon or $400 from Turonic directly. If you act fast, you can snag a huge sale on Amazon for $390. Either price is worth the investment, but who’s gonna say no to a good sale?

Sony Xperia 5 IV comes with 4K camera, 120Hz display, and ‘affordable price’

0

Sony recently revealed its newest smartphone, Xperia 5 IV. Like its predecessors, the Xperia 5 IV incorporates design cues from Sony’s more expensive Xperia devices into a more compact, cost-effective body.

The 6.1-inch display on the Xperia 5 IV will have a 21:9 aspect ratio, remaining unchanged from the previous model. Like the Xperia 5 III, the display includes a 120Hz refresh rate and a 1080p OLED panel. Sony also claims the display will be 50% brighter, have an FHD+ resolution, and have image quality optimization with a real-time HDR drive.

The display is paired with new stereo speakers enclosed in a structure that eliminates housing vibration when watching movies or listening to music. Not quite as impressive as the 4K display we’ve seen before, but it’s an apparent cost-cutting measure when trying to make a more affordable smartphone.

The Xperia 5 IV has a three-camera array with 16mm, 24mm, and 60mm, each with an F2.2, F1.7, and F2.4 apertures. These modules use 12MP and feature 120fps readout speeds, capable of shooting 4K / 120p HDR video.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will power to Xperia 5 IV and the device comes standard with 5G connectivity, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. Along with Android 12, the phone will get three years of security upgrades and two Android updates.

Among the additional features are a 5,000mAh battery, IP65 / 68 rating, better stereo speakers, quick charging (30W), wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging via Sony’s Battery Share function. There is a 3.5mm headphone port, too.

The SIM configuration will be the same as the Xperia 1 IV, with an eSIM for the second SIM slot and a tray for a physical SIM and microSD.

The Xperia 5 IV, which comes in Black, Green, and Ecru White, will go on sale for ยฃ949 in the UK. Sony also says “for approximately $1,000” in the US. Depending on your location, pre-ordering the phone will get you brand new LinkBuds S or WF-1000XM4 earbuds. The handset is scheduled to deliver on October 27th.

For more information about Sony Xperia 5 IV, check the official Sony website.

Pixel 6a review

2

The Pixel line moved away from the mundane design of the Pixel 5 with the most recent Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. Google also left those that prefer a smaller device out in the cold as both flagships are on the large side. The company has restored that option with the new addition to the budget Pixel 6a.

We’ve been testing this model thanks to AT&T and will share our full experience in this review.

Design

The design of the Pixel 6a brings the a-series in line with the rest of the 6th generation of Pixels. You get the glossy finish and new camera hump shade that you will find on its premium siblings. The device’s left side is void of buttons and houses just the SIM tray.

The right side houses the power button and volume rockers. The bottom of the Pixel 6a provides a USB-C charging port and two speaker grills. The other speaker is found just above the screen. The bottom encases the speaker grills and USB-C port.

The screen is a 6.1-inch OLED with a 1080 x 2400 resolution. The size makes it the smallest in the latest gen Pixels. It’s the perfect mix of media consumption and portability in my opinion.

The display has great viewing angles and is bright enough for any task. Could it have a higher refresh rate versus the default 60MHz? Maybe, but in this market category, it’s not a deal-breaker. Overall, I have no issues with the Pixel 6a screen tech that Google has chosen.

Internally, we see some familiar components. This is the first Google a-series to include the Google Tensor M2 chip which adds both performance and security features over the previous generations. Pair that with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage you have a great powerhouse at the price.

Software

The Google Pixel 6a includes the latest Pixel launcher and Android experience. The phone arrived from AT&T with Android 12 but has since been updated to Android 13. This is more of a maintenance update but the overall experience Google presents with very little change to stock Android is still my preferred variant of the mobile operating system.

The Pixel software is fast, clean, and efficient. Menus are easily accessible without layered options in Settings. The launcher is quick and offers great Search features to still showcase that’s Google’s jam. The new widgets from Google are quirky and fun.

Pixels have always been my favorite, but I’d argue they’ve evolved into the best user experience for Android when Google isn’t botching updates. This is worth a mention while on the subject. Google is still somehow struggling with OTA and quality control of updates. The initial Android 13 rollout saw Android 12 being pushed back to Pixels for some reason.

Camera

The rear main shooter is the same 12MP sensor we’ve seen for years on the Pixel line. It’s tried and true, and while dated, Google has tuned the processing for this camera for over five years. This makes it still one of the best performers in the space and the king of this more budget sub-$500 segment.

Joining the main camera is another 12MP ultrawide lens adding options for larger shots. This Pixel 6a sensor also performed very well. I was able to zoom out and get a much better range of photos when needed on larger subjects.

Rounding out the camera lineup is the front-facing 8MP camera. This is more than acceptable for selfies and the occasional video call. Personally, I think it’s one of the better front cameras from any phone maker.

Overall, the camera performance is great. The 12MP main shooter is still one of the easiest point-and-shoot options available. I even think the video processing is better on this model than on the previous 5a-series. My guess is Google is leveraging the Tensor coprocessor to help manage to smooth the frames.

Battery life

Endurance is excellent on the Pixel 6a. With the smaller screen not chugging thru wattage as much as its massive cousins, the 4410mAh battery had no problems. I consistently get thru my day without having to reach for a charger.

Mixed-use has seen up to 18 hours of use with me while I probably averaged 12-15 of normal use with percentages to spare before going to bed. I would project that most users will have no issue with the capacity of the Pixel 6a.

One knock on the battery pack is that while USB-C charging is there with fast charging up to 18Watts, wireless charging is not. Google pits the Pixel 6a in direct competition with Apple’s iPhone SE series and those models have had wireless charging for years. It’s time for Google to put its big boy pants on and make this standard across all its models. Even the Pixel 6a.

Conclusion

Google has created an amazing value with the Pixel 6a. If you have less than $500, and don’t want a giant screen, this is the phone you’ve been looking for. The smooth experience, software updates for up to 5 years, and the price make this the king of the budget market.

You can currently snag the Pixel 6a in two colors from AT&T for only $2 per month and AT&T Enterprise customers for just 99 cents! The phone comes in Charcoal or Sage with single 6GB and 128GB combinations for RAM and storage. If you’re not a fan of payment plans, the Pixel 6a is just $470 from AT&T. Either way, this is an amazing device for that investment.

Reviewing Anker’s GaN 700 series chargers

0

Last month Anker announced the next generation of its charging lineup with GaN Prime. This marked another revolution of the GaN technology making chargers smaller while also being more efficient. GaN is a promising new addition to the charging market and Anker is predictably at the forefront.

Anker’s new stable of devices revolves around six devices. Many of these overlap and offer very similar features with some small variations. We will mention them all but may not go into details about every device individually.

Anker GaN Prime 700 series

The 700 series of the latest chargers from Anker are the centerpieces of the company’s lineup. This division of the GaN Prime models all have a very similar basic design and function, but different levels of power outputs.

The top tier of this is the 747 GaN Prime charger. With PowerIQ 4.0 across three USB-C ports and one USB-A, this charger has all your portable devices covered. Pair those ports with the full 150 watts of output and anything in your travel bag can be recharged with this single charger.

Next is the slightly smaller, but just as flexible, 737 charger. It’s powered by the same GaN and PowerIQ 4.0 tech, but drops the 3rd USB-C port and lowers the total output to a still impressive 120 watts. The Anker GaN Prime 737 strikes a great balance of being able to charge up to three devices simultaneously and still be ultra-compact. At just 39% of the size of the MacBook Pro charger, the 737 can still charge the laptop to full charge in 90 minutes.

Next up in the Goldilocks of chargers is the smallest entry of the 700 series with the Anker 735 charger.ย  Again, Anker has crammed three ports into a super compact design essentially giving you a shrunken 737 design. You get two USB-C ports and a lone USB-A.

This one takes a bit of a drop in output, but at 65 total watts, it’s still much more powerful than many default laptop chargers. PowerIQ 4.0 is still onboard to ensure that whichever devices need the most juice takes priority and the size is perfect for keeping in a small laptop bag or overnight suitcase.

Rounding out the 700 series from Anker is the 733 charger, and honestly, it might be my favorite. This nifty charger takes many of the elements of its siblings and then packs in a 10,000mAh battery pack.

The GaN Prime 733 is essentially a 735 with an internal power pack. You will find the same three-port array and 65W of total output. Above the USB ports is a power button to initiate the power pack for charging when away from the outlet. This makes the 733 a great addition for us power users on the go.

Real World Usage

I’m a huge fan of Anker products and these new GaN Prime chargers don’t disappoint. Each one utilizes a slightly different power scale or size, but they all perform just as Anker describes. I’ve thrown every device in my home at these chargers over the last few weeks.

Whether it be my Pixels, iPhone, Nokia tab, or any of my three laptops, each of these GaN Prime chargers nails it. Each seems to also perform to the specs given. From the total wattage outputs to the dispersement across multiple devices, each of Anker’s chargers works great.

Let’s touch on that PowerIQ 4.0 a bit more. PowerIQ is Anker’s proprietary protocol that allows the chargers to communicate to the connected devices to dictate how much juice it should push. The first few generations of PowerIQ were for just the total output of the devices connected.

However, the new 4.0 edition takes that a step further by communicating with all the devices. This means that if multiple devices are connected, it’s constantly pinging them to see which is charged the most. If you have one phone at 50% and another at 20%, Anker’s PowerIQ 4.0 will still charge both, but it will give the 20% device more wattage to close that charging gap.

Conclusion

I really like the latest from Anker with the GaN chargers. The additional charging capabilities from the combination of GaN and PowerIQ 4.0ย  make a huge difference as we continue to add devices to our daily grind.
