iQOO Z7x 5G global variant spotted on GeekBench

iQOO recently launched the iQOO Z7 series smartphone including iQOO Z7 and Z7i in the market and now the company is reportedly gearing up for the launch of a new member in the iQOO Z7 series- the iQOO Z7x. The smartphone will fall under the midrange category and is likely to launch in India as well as some other global markets. 

The listings spotted on the Geekbench benchmark website by 91 mobiles, reveal some key specifications of the iQOO Z7x and also suggests that the device will soon launch in the global as well as Indian markets. However, the firm has not revealed any launch details about the smartphone. On the Geeknech benchmark website, The iQOO Z7x has managed to score 905 and 2137 points in the single and multi-core tests. 

The gaming-focused smartphone manufacturer company iQOO surprised us with its new iQOO Z7i member on the Z series portfolio. Without any launch event or announcement, the smartphone has gone official in its home country. It's the first smartphone of iQOO that comes with a MediaTek Dimensity 6020 processor. Although the smartphone falls under the mid-range category and comes with a decent set of features at an affordable price tag. Speaking about the price, the iQOO Z7i comes in three variant options- the base 4GB + 128GB costs CNY 949 (~$138), the 6GB + 128GB is priced at CNY 999 (~$145), and 8GB + 128GB retails at CNY 1,099 (~$160). The smartphone comes in two color options- Blue and Black. The device will be up for sale from March 20 in China. iQOO Z7i sports a 6.5-inch FHD+ LCD display with a standard 60Hz refresh rate, 88.99 percent screen-to-body ratio, and 20:9 aspect ratio. The smartphone is equipped with clear eye protection which relieves visual fatigue when using the smartphone. Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 6020 processor based on 7nm architecture paired with up to 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage. The iQOO Z7i runs on Android 13 based on Origin Ocean UI out of the box. In terms of optics, you get a dual rear camera setup on the back with a 13MP primary camera (supports 10x digital zoom) joined by 2MO macro shooter. There’s a 5MP front camera for capturing stunning selfies and video chats. The smartphone is backed by a massive 5,000mAh battery with support of 15W fast charging. The phone supports a bunch of connectivity options including dual 5G, 4G LTE, WiFi 5, Bluetooth v5.1, GPS, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB type C port for charging and data transfer. Talking about the MediaTek Diemsnsity 6020 processor, the processor has almost similar specs to the Dimensity 700. It seems that the Dimensity 6020 processor is the rebranded version of the Dimensity 700 chipset. There will be two more members joining the Z7 series- the iQOO Z7 and Z7x. The brand will launch these two smartphones later on March 20 in China.

Speaking about the specifications, the iQOO Z7x will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor coupled with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, under the hood. The device will run on Android 13 based on FunTouch OS 13 out of the box. 

Other rumored specifications of the iQOO Z7x include a 6.55-inch FHD+ IPS LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a large 6,000mAH battery with 80W fast charging support. Moreover, the smartphone is expected to feature a dual rear camera setup with a 50MP primary camera and a 2MP depth camera. The smartphone is likely to feature 8MP front camera for selfies and video chats. 

Earlier reports suggest that the device will ship with up to 256GB internal storage and up to 8GB RAM which is also confirmed by the Geekbench listing. The brand hasn’t revealed the exact launch date of the iQOO Z7x but the listing suggests the smartphone launch is imminent.

OnePlus is gearing up for the launch of the OnePlus Nord 3 Lite 5G and ahead of the launch the company officially confirms the key specifications of the smartphone. OnePlus Nord 3 Lite 5G is launching on the 4th of April in the Global market. The latest Nord CE 3 Lite comes with huge upgrades over the Nord CE 2 Lite.

The phone will run on Android 13 based on Oxygen OS 13.1 out of the box.

The OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite 5G will be equipped with a 5,000mAH battery with 67W fast charging support which is up from 33W in the Nord CE 2 Lite. The smartphone’s battery easily offers a day-long battery life and the OnePlus claims that the smartphone will last a whole day with just 30 mins of charge.

According to the leaks and rumors, the OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite will cost around €310/₹20,000. And it will be available in Chromatic Grey and Pastel Lime color options.

Vivo officially teases the first look of the Vivo X Fold 2 foldable smartphone. Although the teaser doesn’t reveal any specifications of the foldable. Vivo confirmed that the Vivo X Fold 2 will launch in April 2023 in China alongside it, the company will also planning to launch the Vivo X Flip vertically foldable smartphone and Vivo Pad 2.

The teaser reveals the design of the upcoming Vivo X Fold 2 foldable smartphone. Vivo’s upcoming X fold 2 will launch with a red color option, only the red color shown in the teaser. The Chinese tech content creator posted an unboxing video on Weibo which reveals the full glory of the Vivo X Fold 2 foldable smartphone. The firm bringing the successor to the Vivo X Fold and Vivo X Fold Plus which was launched last year in China.

The X Fold 2 has a big cover screen, the size of the cover screen is unknown and it has a big circular camera module at the back in which a triple rear camera setup integrated with an LED flash. The smartphone’s camera is tuned with Zeiss optics.

There is a punch hole cutout at the top center of the screen and it has a curved display. Compared to the other foldable such as Galaxy Z Fold 5 and oppo Find N2, the upcoming Vivo X Fold 2 will be a light foldable smartphone on the market said Huang Tuo, the vice president of products at Vivo.

Furthermore, the Vivo X Fold 2 foldable was recently spotted on the AnTuTu. The listings revealed that the X Fold 2 will be equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. It will ship with 12 GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.  In terms of software, it will boot Android 13-based Origin OS (only for the Chinese market) out of the box.

Other rumored specifications of the Vivo X Fold 2 include an 8-inch 2k E6 AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, an In-display ultrasonic sensor on both screens, and a 4800mAh battery with the support of 120W fast charging. For optics, the foldable will likely feature a 50MP sony IMX866 primary camera with OIS support paired with 12MP ultrawide shooter and 12MP telephoto lens.

There is no word on whether the phone will in launch outside China. Well, for now, we have only a first look but in the upcoming days, Vivo will reveal more about the Vivo X Fold 2 smartphone.

Zhiyun Fiveray M40 Fill Light Review

A while back, I had the opportunity to review the 100W Fiveray F100 Lightstick as well as compare it to the previous generation FR100C. However, as compact as Zhiyun’s lightsticks are, sometimes you need something a little more portable. That’s where a light like the pocket-sized Fiveray M40 comes in handy. Thanks to Zhiyun for sending this one out for review.

Features

One of the biggest benefits of the Fiveray M40 is its size. It measures in at 5.37 x 3 x 1.14 inches and weighs less than one pound. This makes the Fiveray M40 easy to slip in a pocket for on the go or toss in a bag without weighing you down.

The next best thing about the Fiveray M40 is its output. The brightness of this tiny light is kind of hard to comprehend. It’s beyond impressive how much light the M40 puts out for its size and it works great as a fill light and can even step in for a key light in a pinch. Especially, if you have multiple M40s on hand.

On top of being bright, the Zhiyun Fiveray M40 offers temperature controls ranging from 2700-6500k with a CRI of over 95 to provide a wide range of lighting options with accurate color. While we’re on the subject of color, there are no RGB options on the M40—but that’s fine—because it allowed Zhiyun to squeeze in more LEDs to provide increased brightness.

Another feature I love about the M40 is how Zhiyun included two screw-hole mounts for tripods along with a rotating arm. This makes it convenient to mount the Fiveray M40 vertical or horizontal while being able to rotate it to just the right angle.

Finally, we’ve come to battery life which can be monitored with the four LEDs on the back. The Fiveray M40 can run at 40W for up to half an hour or a little over 90 minutes when set to 10W. It is powered by two built-in 18650 rechargeable batteries and uses a USB Type-C port for charging.

The good news is it can be fully charged in as little as 30 minutes when using a 50W capable charger. The M40 also works while charging, so if you’re near an outlet or have a power bank with enough output, you can run the M40 for longer periods.

Performance

The Zhiyun Fiveray M40 is tiny and extremely bright. However, it’s not the softest light source due to its compact size. It looks best when feathered off to the side or when bounced off of a ceiling or wall. It’s a good thing the M40 is so powerful because you’ll lose some light by modifying it, but that’s true of any light source. Despite the harsh direct light and short battery life, the real advantage of the M40 is its portability, versatile mounting options, and being able to charge it while it’s in use.

Additionally, Zhiyun also made the Fiveray M40 easy to use with simple controls, making it simple to set the temperature of the light and the intensity with a roll of the dial.

For video shooters, you’ll want to watch out for fan noise while using the M40. The brighter it is and the longer you use it, the louder it gets. It becomes even worse if it’s also charging while in use. This isn’t a problem if you’re shooting pictures, but if you intend to use it for live streaming it could get picked up on your mic. Although, in my experience, the fan noise is quite low.

I’ve taken the test images in this review using my smartphone just as in my past Zhiyun reviews to show how using a quality light like the Fiveray M40 can really make all the difference no matter what camera you’re using.

Final thoughts

Zhiyun has outdone itself with the Fiveray M40. It has combined super bright LEDs into a sturdy compact housing with color temperature options and great controls. It’s easy to mount, easy to use, and can be charged while in use. All of these add up to a fantastic light to use for photography and videography. The only caveats is the minimal fan noise and relatively short battery life. Besides that, the Zhiyun Fiveray M40 makes an excellent addition to your kit, and at only $99 it makes it tempting to pick up more than one.

Our smartphones have taken over most aspects of our media interactions and the car infotainment system is no different. With the arrival of Android Auto and CarPlay, our phones are more involved in how we commute than ever. So, too, are dongles that allow us to create a wireless reality of this dream like the Carlinkit 4.0 adapter.

Android and iOS support

The biggest draw to the Carlinkit 4.0 is that the unit supports both major mobile operating systems. Android Auto and CarPlay are both onboard this adapter. This really is the dream for split households, or nerds like myself, who share devices across both platforms.

The setup is pretty painless as well. You are presented with a boot menu on first plugging the Carlinkit into your car. The interface gives the Bluetooth pairing name for the 4.0 and you connect via the phone’s UI Settings. After a few seconds, the infotainment interface will present the appropriate car system for Android or iOS.

This portion of the user experience has been pretty consistent. Each boot takes around 20 seconds to scan which device is connected and land on the phone-powered home screen. Performance has been no different than other options for wireless car adapters we’ve used. There’s a slight drop in latency versus a wired connection, but for the most part, users won’t notice much difference when using the Carlinkit.

The One Problem

The one issue I did have was that my Mazda head unit struggled to communicate the correct aspect ratio while using Android Auto. This is a known issue with the Carlinkit 4.0 adapter and their engineers are actively searching for a fix. What happens is that my infotainment screen is technically a 10.25-inch screen but it’s extremely short and long. This seems to confuse the Android Auto implementation of the dongle.

This is not an issue at all while using iOS in my car. The Carlinkit 4.0 also works perfectly in my wife’s Jeep Wrangler using both platforms. The more common, square aspect ratio easily fills the whole screen correctly. I think you just need to be aware of the one Android hiccup if you have a similarly shaped head unit as the Mazda systems.

Online Updates

Much like the previous Carlinkit A2A adapter we reviewed, there’s a dedicated website portal to provide some settings and OTA updates. Personally, I’d still like this to be an app-based option like the Carsifi alternative.

The web implementation is clunky and requires you to force your phone into a WiFi connection first and then kill that connection to push download the update over LTE, then back to the WiFi connection for the update. Having this in an app that doesn’t require all that back and forth would be much more intuitive.

Conclusion

I enjoy the flexibility of wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s a small convenience over a wired connection that I think is worth it, especially if you also have Qi charging in your vehicle. The Carlinkit 4.0 is another great option for consumers to add this functionality without breaking the bank.

With the successful hits of the Nothing Phone 1 in the market, the emerging smartphone Nothing confirmed that the Nothing Phone 2 will launch later this year. Although the brand hasn’t confirmed an official launch timeframe, the launch of the Nothing Phone 2 is imminent. The smartphone was recently spotted on the Indian Bureau of Standards (BIS) certification website. 

The well-known tech publication 91-mobiles spotted the listings and revealed the Nothing Phone 2 model number. Nothing Phone 2 with a model number Nothing AIN065 has recently been listed on the BIS certification which means the Nothing Phone 2 will soon launch in India, though the listings don’t reveal any specifications or features of the device. Previous reports suggest that the Phone 2 is touted to launch in Q2 or Q3, 2023. Well for now it’s very tough to predict the exact launch frame. 

One thing is very sure the upcoming Nothing Phone 2 will be a big upgrade over the first generation of Phone 1. The Phone 2 is likely going to be a higher-end smartphone, we’ll get the flagship features in the smartphone. The Nothing Phone 2 would launch powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, although Carl Pei and the company haven’t confirmed yet.

Twinkly Squares Review

If you’re wanting to upgrade your gaming space with some unique lighting, then Twinkly Squares could be exactly what you’ve been searching for. These unique lights are made up of individual squares or pixels, and allow you to customize your space with a retro gaming vibe. Thankfully, our friends over at Twinkly sent us a set for review.

Setup

The Twinkly Squares starter kit has a total of six light panels, including one master tile and five extension tiles. The master tile contains the power plug and you’ll need to connect the extension tiles to it using the included cables and brackets. It’s also worth noting that each master tile can support up to 15 extension tiles allowing you to expand upon the starter kit with additional panels.

Along with the cables, there are a series of clips that are used to lock the tiles together. This was a straightforward process that didn’t require connecting the tiles in any specific order, unlike some other lighting products I’ve used in the past.

Not only was connecting the panels easy, but it was also completely reversible. At any time, the clips and cables can be removed and used to rearrange the panels in any way that you choose. I went with a simple rectangle layout, but Twinkly Squares can be arranged in a straight line, off-center, or any other arrangement as long as the cables and clips can make contact.

Once everything is locked into place, the Twinkly app will use the camera on your smartphone to scan a pattern of lights on the panels to learn the position. Compared to setting up other light panels I’ve used in the past, Twinkly Squares has been one of the easiest. It didn’t require any tedious activities such as sorting the panels by number or following along in the app step by step to connect everything in a specific order.

It’s not often a lighting product offers such flexibility in how it can be connected while also allowing you to change your mind and rearrange the panels so effortlessly. That’s a big benefit of choosing the Twinkly Squares and I really appreciate it.

Installation

While connecting the Twinkly Squares panels was painless, hanging it on your wall has some pros and cons. Most light panels on the market use adhesive patches to stick to the wall, but there are none included with the Twinkly Squares starter kit.

Instead, the Twinkly Squares tiles feature cutouts on the back to be hung on nails, along with a guide in the box to help with the installation. That means making holes in your walls and seems a lot more damaging than just sticking it with some removable adhesive.

However, in my experience, that adhesive does not come off cleanly and ends up stripping the paint from your walls. It’s also not reusable and you’ll have to buy more of the patches if you want to move the lights to another location. At least with nails, you can easily fill holes in the wall and move the panels without purchasing more adhesive.

Personally, I loved that Twinkly Squares was thick enough to stand on its own and I could sit it on a table. It gives me the freedom to move them anytime I want and leaves my walls looking pristine.

Features

Twinkly Squares has a unique pixelated layout with each panel split into 64 LED lights capable of displaying over 16 million different colors. The Twinkly app puts you in charge of all of the tiles with a series of presets and customization options.

The selection of presets are split into a series of categories and not every preset will work perfectly depending on your chosen layout or the number of tiles you’re using. Mostly, these are the effects in the “Art” category or ones that include movement.

The app usually offers a chance to customize an effect before applying it, however, those options often differ depending on the preset. If you want to toy around with customization, then the effects in the “Ambience” category are your best option.

What truly makes Twinkly Squares stand out from its competitors is the ability to display images or gifs in a pixelated view. That’s the feature I was most excited to try out and I began to search and download gifs immediately after setting up the Twinkly Squares starter kit.

Unfortunately, not every gif or image will work, even if it’s already pixelated. I found myself going through several images and moving gifs before I found ones that fit the layout properly and also had enough detail once displayed on the Twinkly Squares. Most ended up being too blocky to identify, but I was able to find a couple that worked perfectly, and when you find one that fits just right then it looks stunning.

Just be aware that not every image or moving gif will work properly and you’ll need to do some hunting to find the ones that will.

Twinkly Squares also integrates with Google Home, making it convenient to power them on or off with voice commands or change the overall color.

Final thoughts

There is a myriad of smart lighting products on the market, but Twinkly Squares is one of the most unique I’ve ever seen. I find the app leaves a little to be desired though. It could use a better layout and more presets to choose from. Regardless, you’ll still be satisfied with all of the customization options available and Twinkly Squares distinctive pixelated theme. That’s if you don’t mind paying $250 for them because Twinkly Squares does not come cheap.
