Amazon Fire Max 11 review

The Amazon Fire Max 11 is the largest and most powerful tablet in Amazon’s lineup, featuring a metal build that feels premium compared to other Fire devices.

With an 11-inch LCD screen and a resolution of 2,000 x 1,200 pixels, it delivers decent visuals for consuming media content. However, the 16:9 aspect ratio indicates its primary focus on movie watching rather than productivity tasks.

The tablet also includes a fingerprint reader on the side power button, a microSD slot for expandable storage, and support for Wi-Fi 6.

That’s a lot of awesome stuff to be sure, but it’s not quite enough to justify its price. All told, I might suggest scraping some of the expandability that comes with the add-on keyboard and stylus, and keeping things in the lean-back space that made its predecessors so attractive.

See, the Fire Max 11 aims to be more than just a content consumption device, but it fails to deliver a compelling productivity experience.

While the tablet’s metal chassis, eight-megapixel camera, fingerprint scanner, and magnetic keyboard case and stylus attachment provide a premium look and feel, the software limitations hinder its usability for work tasks.

Target User

While the Fire Max 11 is marketed as a premium tablet, it fails to justify its price tag. Amazon’s Fire OS, a modified version of Android, lacks essential features and access to the Google Play Store. Consequently, the tablet is best suited for users who primarily consume Amazon content, such as movies, books, and music.

Don’t get me wrong, the tablet aspires to be more and do more, but it falls well short on this attempt. At least in that cohesive experience that feels like the software and the hardware teams talk to each other.

For users seeking a more versatile tablet experience that encompasses productivity and a broader app selection, there are better options available at similar price points.

Software Experience

The core issue with the Fire Max 11 lies in its software. Fire OS is heavily tailored towards promoting Amazon’s own ecosystem, making it challenging to perform tasks beyond consuming Amazon content.

It lacks Google apps and the Play Store, restricting users to the limited offerings of Amazon’s App Store. Attempts to install the Play Store on the device require additional steps and may not work reliably. Overall, the software limitations hinder the tablet’s functionality and versatility.

The biggest hurdle faced by the Amazon Fire Max 11 is its software experience, which falls short in meeting the demands of productivity tasks. Running on Fire OS, a modified version of Android, the tablet lacks crucial updates and features that would enhance its usability for work.

Fire OS is heavily geared towards promoting Amazon’s content and services, with a focus on delivering a seamless experience for consuming Amazon media. However, it neglects essential productivity applications and tools needed for work-related activities. The absence of Google apps and services further limits the tablet’s functionality, leaving users without access to popular productivity apps like Google Docs, Gmail, and Google Maps.

Now, to be fair, I absolutely love this on the right tablet. Time and again I find that a full-on Google Play experience opens the door up a bit more than I’d like. I tend to prefer the “lean back” vibe and content consumption that comes with earlier Kindle Fires.

Here, the tablet endeavors to do more, especially with add-on hardware accessories. Sadly, the OS and extras only go to show the limitations of the custom platform.

The Fire Max 11 runs an aging version of Fire OS, which I believe is based on Android 11, despite the availability of more recent versions. This means missing out on significant software advancements and improvements found in newer Android iterations. The lack of gestures for navigation and reliance on virtual buttons at the bottom of the screen hampers the overall user experience, making it less intuitive compared to tablets with more modern software.

Another notable drawback is the presence of ads on the lock screen, which can be removed for an additional fee. This can be off-putting for users seeking a distraction-free and professional environment for productivity. And considering the higher price of the tablet, I think that the $15 could be absorbed by Amazon.

Moreover, Amazon’s app store, the primary source for acquiring applications on the Fire Max 11, is limited in its offerings. Many essential productivity apps are absent from the store, leaving users with a limited selection and unable to access widely used tools. While some workarounds exist, such as sideloading the Google Play Store, this process requires additional steps, compromises security features, and is not easily accessible to the average user.

Overall, the software experience of the Fire Max 11 is a significant obstacle to its viability as a productivity tablet. The lack of essential apps, outdated software version, and limitations imposed by Fire OS hinder users’ ability to perform work-related tasks efficiently.

Here’s a list of some of the daily productivity apps and tools that I’d love to use on a more well-rounded device:

  • Slack
  • Airtable
  • Todoist
  • Evernote
  • Google titles like Keep, Gmail, Calendar

While the tablet may serve adequately for basic productivity needs, it falls behind competitors that offer a more comprehensive and up-to-date software ecosystem.

What We Like

The Fire Max 11’s metal build offers a premium feel, and its performance is noticeably faster than previous Fire tablets. The inclusion of a fingerprint reader, Wi-Fi 6 support, and front and rear cameras enhance the tablet’s usability. For those focused on consuming Amazon content, the tablet delivers a satisfactory experience and provides access to a range of Amazon Prime features and perks.

The Amazon Fire Max 11 boasts a design that aims to offer a more premium look and feel compared to other Fire tablet models. With its metal chassis and refined build quality, it distinguishes itself from the plastic-backed tablets in Amazon’s lineup.

The tablet’s 11-inch LCD screen, with a resolution of 2,000 x 1,200 pixels, delivers punchy colors and wide viewing angles. While it performs well in indoor environments and offers reasonable brightness for outdoor use in shaded areas, the 5:3 aspect ratio may feel cramped when browsing the web or working on documents. In portrait orientation, the tablet’s usability can be awkward and less comfortable compared to devices with more productivity-oriented aspect ratios.

One notable addition is the inclusion of a fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button, a first for a Fire tablet. This provides a convenient and secure method for unlocking the device and adds an extra layer of user privacy.

The Fire Max 11’s design also includes a keyboard case and stylus. The keyboard attaches magnetically to the tablet’s bottom edge, drawing power directly from the device, eliminating the need for separate charging or Bluetooth pairing.

The keys are adequately spaced and offer decent travel, with a row of function keys for media and system controls. However, the trackpad on the keyboard is criticized for being cramped and sticky, making precise gestures challenging to execute. And when you’re using the tablet in portrait mode it just feels wonky and wrong.

The stylus, utilizing USI 2.0 technology, provides a smooth and lag-free writing experience akin to using an Apple Pencil on an iPad. While it falls short in terms of software support and the availability of dedicated note-taking apps, the stylus itself performs admirably. In the right context and usage, I like having one available, but there’s got to be a better way to attach it than magnetically on the side edge.

What We Didn’t

The tablet’s biggest drawback is its price-to-performance ratio. Compared to other tablets in the market, including the base model iPad, Pixel Tablet, OnePlus Pad, and Lenovo’s Tab P11 Pro, the Fire Max 11 falls short in terms of power and software capabilities.

Fire OS’s limitations and lack of essential apps hinder productivity and restrict users to Amazon’s ecosystem. Given the availability of superior alternatives at similar or slightly higher price points, it’s challenging to justify purchasing the Fire Max 11.

Conclusion

The Amazon Fire Max 11 attempts to position itself as a high-end tablet, but it ultimately fails to deliver the value and versatility expected at its price range. I appreciate the effort and slight pivot for Amazon, but perhaps they’d be better off introducing a new product line and letting the Fire series stay with what made it so appealing.

While it excels in consuming Amazon content, the tablet’s limited software and lack of essential apps hinder its usability for other tasks. Unless you are solely focused on accessing Amazon’s ecosystem, there are better tablet options available that offer superior performance and a more robust software experience.

Availability

You can learn more about the features and capabilities of the Fire Max 11 at (where, else?) Amazon. It’s currently available for $229.99. For your money you’ll get the 64GB model with lock screen ads. It’s also offered with 128GB storage, a keyboard and/or stylus, and more.

Samsung is launching its new mid-ranger smartphone soon in India

0

Yesterday, at the Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung launched its latest Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 foldable smartphones, Galaxy Watch 6, and Tab S9 series. And now, Samsung teased a Galaxy F34 poster on the popular e-commerce site Flipkart confirming the new mid-range Samsung will soon launch in the market.

Samsung’s Galaxy F34 smartphone will launch next month (August) in India but the firm hasn’t shared the exact timeframe for the device. For those who don’t know, Samsung’s F series smartphones are only limited to Indian markets and it’s obvious the upcoming F34 smartphone will be limited to India.

The teaser poster revealed some key specifications of the upcoming Galaxy F34 smartphone. The Galaxy F34 will feature a 120Hz Super AMOLED panel and a 50MP No shake primary sensor. Ahead of the launch, some specifications of the Galaxy F34 smartphone surfaced online, including 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, a big 6.5-inch screen with boosted 1000 nits of peak brightness, and an Exynos 1280 processor. Also, the teaser poster suggests that the smartphone comes in Green and Black color options.

The smartphone will reportedly have a massive 6,000mAh battery capacity which Samsung claimed to last up to two days on a single charge and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. It will run on Android 13 based on One UI 5.1 out of the box and will reportedly get four major OS updates (Up to Android 17) and five years of security updates (up to 2027).

OPPO introduced its new OPPO K11 mid-range smartphone in China

0

OPPO is expanding its midrange smartphone portfolio with the launch of the OPPO K11 smartphone in China. Although it’s not the first phone in the K-series, OPPO already unveiled the K11x smartphone earlier this year in China. The K11 smartphone has a very similar design to the OnePlus Nord CE 3 5G (the latest midrange form OnePlus) which was launched recently in the global market. Have a look at the detailed specs and prices of the OPPO K11 smartphone.

OPPO K11 comes in three variant options- the base 8/256GB variant costs CNY 1,899 (~$266), the 12/256GB costs CNY 1,999 (~$280), and the top-end 12/512GB model retails at CNY 2,499 (~$350). OPPO offers two new shades for the K11- the Moon Shadow and Glacier Blue.

Currently, the smartphone is now available for pre-orders while the open sales will commence on August 1 in China. OPPO hasn’t shared any words on the international availability of the OPPO K11.

Inside the OPPO K11, Snapdragon 782G chipset is at the helm paired with LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. It runs on Android 13 based on ColorOS 13.1 custom skin out of the box. The device houses a 5,000mAh battery with support for 100W fast charging tech which claimed to charge the device in just 26-min.

In terms of lenses, the OPPO K11 has a triple rear camera setup with 50MP Sony IMX890 primary camera with OIS support coupled with an 8MP ultrawide camera and a 2MP macro lens. For the front, the OPPO K11 features a 16MP camera for selfies and video chats.

The smartphone sports a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 240Hz touch sampling rate, up to 500 nits of peak brightness, and a 2160Hz PWM high-frequency dimming.

Arlo Pro 5S 2K review

The Arlo Pro 5S 2K outdoor security camera, priced at $249.99, is a worthy upgrade from its predecessor, the Pro 4 Spotlight Camera.

While it shares many similarities with the Pro 4, the Pro 5S offers dual-band Wi-Fi, a low-power mode, and support for Arlo’s SecureLink technology, making it a compelling choice. However, it lacks compatibility with Apple’s HomeKit platform, which may be a drawback for some users.

The Pro 5S 2K boasts improved battery life compared to its predecessor, lasting up to eight months with the new Low Power mode. This mode captures snapshots instead of video clips, conserving battery power.

The camera’s imaging specifications remain the same, capturing 2K video with a 160-degree field of view, featuring a motion-activated spotlight and color night vision.

Five Features You Should Know

  1. High-Quality Video: The Arlo Pro 5S 2K captures detailed 2K video footage, delivering clear and sharp visuals for effective surveillance.
  2. Advanced Security Features: With a built-in motion-activated spotlight, color night vision, and intelligent alerts, the camera offers enhanced security measures to detect and deter potential threats.
  3. Dual-Band Wi-Fi: The inclusion of dual-band Wi-Fi ensures a more reliable and stable connection, allowing for seamless streaming and remote access to your camera feed.
  4. Easy Installation and Flexibility: The camera can be easily installed outdoors with a weather-resistant design and adjustable mounting options, providing flexibility in positioning.
  5. Integration and Compatibility: The Arlo Pro 5S 2K is compatible with popular voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant, as well as the SmartThings home automation platform, allowing for convenient control and integration into your smart home ecosystem.

The Pro 5S 2K supports both motion and sound detection, and offers smart motion detection features with a subscription. It also supports local storage when connected to an Arlo Smart Hub.

The Pro 5S 2K is managed through the Arlo Secure mobile app, which provides easy access to camera settings and recordings. The app allows for customization of motion detection settings, video quality, and power management options, including the Low Power mode.

The camera is compatible with voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant, as well as the SmartThings home automation platform. But, as mentioned at the top, it lacks support for Apple HomeKit, which may be a deciding or limiting factor for Apple users.

Installing the Pro 5S 2K is a straightforward process, and the camera delivers excellent video quality with detailed footage during the day and clear black-and-white captures at night. Motion and sound alerts are prompt, and two-way communication works well.

The camera integrates smoothly with an Arlo Home Security System and offers reliable smart alerts for detecting packages and distinguishing between people, pets, and vehicles.

Target User

The Arlo Pro 5S 2K is targeted towards users who prioritize advanced security features and high-quality video footage in an outdoor security camera. It is suitable for homeowners or individuals who want to monitor their property, deter potential intruders, and keep a close eye on their surroundings.

The camera’s integration with smart home systems and voice assistants makes it appealing to users who want to incorporate it into their existing smart home setups. Overall, the Arlo Pro 5S 2K caters to individuals who value reliable security, seamless integration, and exceptional video performance in their outdoor surveillance systems.

Final Thoughts

In summary, the Arlo Pro 5S 2K is a feature-rich outdoor security camera that provides high-quality video, extensive third-party integrations, and convenient installation.

It offers premium features such as color night vision, a built-in spotlight and siren, intelligent alerts, and voice controls. However, the need for a subscription plan for advanced features should be considered.

If you require dual-band Wi-Fi and extended battery life, the Pro 5S 2K is a worthwhile investment at $250.

With the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and main spotlight large cover display, the Z Flip 5 starts at $999 (The Z Flip 4 was also launched at the same price). Samsung really did a fantastic job with its pricing, despite it gots some major updates Samsung retains the same pricing.

Yubo, Threads, BeReal: All the New Social Media You Need To Know About

0

According to Forbes, in 2023, 4.9 billion people are on social media worldwide. The average user is on six or seven different platforms. And they’re always searching for the next big thing. Sites like Twitch and TikTok have been gaining popularity over the past few years, while other platforms  like BeReal, Yubo, and Threads are attracting users looking for unique experiences and ways to expand their online social circles.

There are countless social media platforms to choose from in this digital age. Younger users are the key demographic that uses social apps. They’re flocking to simpler apps that focus on their friends, such as Yubo, a popular social media app that allows users to find new pals, explore groups, and go live to chat or play an assortment of games with numerous participants. Here’s everything you need to know about the new social media sites.

Social Media Sites Like Yubo and Threads Become Part of Young Users’ Cultural Lexicon

Since the inception of social media, many users have been focused on curating a perfect image to present to friends, family, and the whole world. Isn’t that the whole point of Snapchat filters and the Instagram aesthetic? However, younger generations, such as Generation Z, are craving a more authentic experience, which has influenced this new wave of social media.

Yubo is a popular choice for those looking for real-world connections. The social media app launched in 2015 and has 60 million users worldwide as of 2022. It’s focused on young people under the age of 25. What sets Yubo apart from other social media sites is that it does not have any performance metrics, like likes, comments or follower counts. Instead, the company encourages users to meet other people, hang out and create new friends, and play games, without the pressure of creating and posting content to generate the greatest number of likes. They can also livestream from their phone. “In 95% of the rooms, there are only streamers,” Sacha Lazimi, CEO and co-founder, told TechCrunch. “Rooms have between five and 10 people on average.”

People between the ages of 13 and 25 make up an estimated 99% of its users. With young users, Yubo takes moderation very seriously. When people sign up, the company checks their identity and puts them in the appropriate age group. “We analyze all content both semantically and visually,” stated Lazimi. Users can swipe left or right between profiles and videos being streamed to find new friends with similar interests.

BeReal launched in December 2019. The social app strives to show users what their friends are doing in real time. It works by motivating users to take a photo within two minutes of getting a push notification from BeReal’s camera, which snaps a selfie and a front-facing pic at the same time. Since launching the WidgetMojis feature, which displays friends’ photos in a live-update widget on the home screen, in February 2022, the app has had over 13.9 million lifetime installs. Users enjoy that the real-life photos they share are free from filters, heavy editing, or augmented reality effects.

Threads is a micro-blogging social media site created by Meta. It was designed to foster positive, productive conversations and allows users to control who can mention or reply to them within the platform.

It’s offered in approximately 100 countries and 30 languages. Think of it as an alternative to Twitter. It’s currently the fastest-growing app of all time, amassing 100 million users in the first five days since its launch in July 2023.

Threads’ users sign in using their Instagram account. The social media platform features a single news feed and lets users share text updates and join public conversations. Users cannot sort the news feed chronologically but can automatically sync their followed accounts to their Instagram accounts. Anyone under the age of 16 (18 in certain countries) gets defaulted into a private profile when they join the social network.

It will be interesting to watch these social media platforms evolve as they are primed to revolutionize the industry, which began over 25 years ago.

A Brief History of Social Media

The first recognized social networking sites — Bolt and SixDegrees — debuted in 1997. Bolt, co-founded by Dan Pelson and Jane Mount, allowed users to connect via email or instant message, voice mail, voice chat, and message boards. Andrew Weinreich founded SixDegrees. It featured profiles, friends lists, and school affiliations on the platform.

SixDegrees had millions of registered users, but its networks were limited because of a lack of people connected to the internet. It’s hard to believe, but in 1997, the internet infrastructure was not advanced enough for social networks.

In the fall of 2001, Adrian Scott, a founding investor in Napster, launched Ryze to help people “rise up” through business networking. Considered the precursor to LinkedIn, it helped business professionals connect by allowing them to build profiles, send messages, and add friends. According to the site, it attracted more than 500,000 members from over 200 countries.

In March 2002, Jonathan Abrams and Peter Chin launched Friendster. The site’s premise is that people were only separated by six degrees and showed how users were connected to strangers. Friendster had a relatively straightforward interface. It became the place to be in 2003 because it was believed to be a safe way to meet potential dates and helped chip away at the negative stigma of online dating. Unfortunately, the site experienced technical difficulties, which propelled frustrated users to flock to MySpace, which launched in August 2003.

MySpace, founded by Tom Anderson (everyone’s first friend), Josh Berman, Brad Greenspan, and Chris DeWolfe, became the No. 1 website in 2006. People converged on the site, which offered not only friend networking but also customizable profiles and music promotion that led to the discovery of emerging artists, including Arctic Monkeys, Adele, Sean Kingston, and Lily Allen. At its peak, the site had over 100 million users, but by 2008 it began to decline and was eventually overtaken by Facebook.

Harvard sophomore Mark Zuckerburg launched Facebook in February 2004 exclusively for university students. However, by September 2006, it was available to the general public. It became one of the most controversial social media platforms in internet history, plagued by lawsuits and privacy concerns. It’s gone through numerous updates over the past 20-plus years and is still extremely popular. And according to data released by parent company Meta, in 2023, the site has 2.9 billion monthly active users.

Twitter, created by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Evan Williams, and Biz Stone, was launched in July 2006. Inspired by text messaging, Dorsey set out to create a platform allowing users to share short messages with groups of people. The microblogging platform enables users to send 280-character messages, called tweets, to their followers and can highlight specific topics using hashtags. In 2022, Elon Musk completed a $44 billion deal to purchase Twitter. In 2023, the social network has more than 354 million active monthly users and 260 million who log on daily.

Instagram was founded in October 2010 and attracted 25,000 users in one day. Within two months, it hit 1 million users. That’s especially impressive considering it was originally only available for iPhone and didn’t launch on Android until 2012. In April 2012, Facebook announced its intentions to purchase the photo- and video-sharing app for $1 billion.

In 2011, Justin Kan spun off his lifecasting channel Justin.tv into Twitch. The platform’s purpose was focused on video game streaming. In 2014, Amazon offered to purchase it for $1 billion. It was a smart business move since by 2021, Twitch’s reached over 2 million concurrent viewers and generated a revenue of an estimated $2.8 billion in 2022.

TikTok launched in 2018 and allows users to watch, create, and share 15- to 60-second videos. By 2023 it has been downloaded more than 2.5 billion times. It’s enjoyed by amateur and professional creators who use the platform’s effects, such as filters, stickers, and background music, to produce short videos. Since the majority of TikTok is Chinese-owned, many have raised concerns about the potential misuse of the private information it gathers from users. However, that hasn’t stopped it from becoming one of the world’s largest social media apps, with over 3.5 billion downloads worldwide. It’s available in over 35 languages and more than 150 markets and is popular with Gen Z; approximately 40% of users are between the ages of 18 to 24.

These are a few of the popular social networks that shaped the landscape for platforms such as Yubo, Threads, and BeReal to thrive today.

Hands-On: ECOXGEAR EcoJourney Waterproof Speaker and Dry Box

The ECOXGEAR EcoJourney Dry Box 60W Waterproof Speaker is a rugged and versatile outdoor speaker designed to withstand the elements while delivering high-quality sound.

Combining the features of a waterproof speaker and a protective dry box, this unique device allows you to take your music with you on all your adventures, whether it’s a beach trip, camping in the wilderness, or a kayaking expedition.

The EcoJourney pairs wirelessly with your smartphone or any Bluetooth-enabled device. Once connected, it allows you to play music, podcasts, or audiobooks out in the wild. Like in the woods or on a kayak kind of wild.

Its IP67-rated waterproof and dustproof construction ensures that the speaker can be submerged in water up to a meter deep for half an hour without damage. Additionally, the dry box feature protects your valuables like keys, wallets, or smartphones from water, dust, and impact.

The design of the ECOXGEAR speaker leans more in the direction of durability but still manages to be portable enough. It features a robust and rugged outer shell, constructed from high-quality materials, making it resistant to drops, shocks, and rough handling.

The integrated carry handle adds to its portability, allowing users to conveniently carry it around during outdoor activities. The box-like shape not only gives it a unique appearance but also provides ample storage space for essential items, making it a multi-functional outdoor companion.

To be sure, the lid is pretty much where all of your weight is located as that’s what houses the speaker and battery components. The bottom half is more or less an empty hard shell with a few pockets.

The 60W speaker system produces clear, crisp, and loud sound and its bass response is surprisingly good. There’s more depth than I expected to hear in music. The built-in rechargeable battery offers an impressive playtime of up to 50 hours on a single charge. That’s sufficient enough to get you through a full weekend of camping, swimming, kayaking, and hiking.

The speaker caters to outdoor enthusiasts who love to have their favorite tunes accompany them on their adventures. Whether you’re an avid camper, beachgoer, or general outdoor adventurer, the EcoJourney is designed to be the ultimate companion.

Its waterproof and rugged features make it an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys outdoor activities or works in challenging environments where traditional speakers might not survive.

The durable construction ensures it can withstand various environmental hazards, giving users peace of mind during their adventures. I can see users tossing this into the bed of a pickup truck or camper without worry of wear and tear.

While the ECOXGEAR EcoJourney offers a generally great overall experience, it’s worth noting that it’s not quite as light or “portable” as it appears. It’s a bit heavier than you might expect; you may not want to carry it on your shoulder for long periods. The strap is handy, but I found myself using the handle for moving it around.

The storage space is adequate enough to handle a few phones, wallets, keys, and other personal effects one might want to tuck away. The clips on the shoulders are firm and you’ll feel confident knowing things inside are kept dry no matter how wet it gets outside.

The ECOXGEAREcoJourney Dry Box 60W Waterproof Speaker is an outstanding option for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a durable and versatile speaker to elevate their adventures.

With its rugged design, impressive sound quality, plus the convenience of doubling as a dry box, it’s a fairly affordable all-in-one solution for music and valuables protection in the great outdoors.

Learn more about the EcoJourney at ECOXGEAR’s website where you can purchase one today for about $200.
