LaserPecker LP2 Laser Engraver Review

0

Among creators and makers, there are certain machines that are coveted, such as 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and laser engravers. In the past, we’ve covered 3D printers like the Sunlu T3 I reviewed for the site, and today, we have the LP2 Laser Engraver sent to us from LaserPecker.

Features

For the uninitiated, laser engravers, like the LP2, use a laser to burn or etch designs into a variety of materials. The LP2 is capable of transferring designs to wood, leather, stone, glass, and metal. Be aware that some of these materials may require some prep work. For example, you’ll need to apply Sharpie or paint to glass or metal to allow the laser can etch the design unless you are removing the finish from a metal object. In that case, there is no prep required.

While the LaserPecker LP 2 can be used to engrave wood, it’s also worth noting that it’s powerful enough to cut through wood, paper, and leather. Although, the LaserPecker team suggests not cutting anything thicker than 0.2 inches.

Now that we’ve covered the materials that the LP2 works on, here are some of the other key features. For starters, unlike many other laser engravers on the market, the LP2 uses a mirror to aim the laser instead of moving it along a gantry similar to a 3D printer. This allows the LP2 to move at lightning-fast speeds of up to 36000mm/min, although, it also limits the working area of the laser to approximately four inches by four inches.

That works perfectly for many items such as coasters, glasses, tumblers, and more. However, fret not if you want to engrave larger. LaserPecker makes an electric roller accessory that makes it easy to engrave cylindrical objects and also allows it to transform the LP2 into an engraver on wheels.

You’ll still be limited to four inches in width, but the rollers can be used to move an object side to side under the laser, or in trolley mode, where it will drive across larger items to cover more area. It’s an ingenious solution, and one that I give LaserPecker a lot of credit for implementing.

Besides offering a flexible way to engrave on a variety of materials, the LP2 has support for many popular imaging formats. You can load several different popular image files when using the app, including JPG, PNG, SVG, BMP, CAD, CDR, G-code, and more. This is another way that LaserPecker makes it convenient to print what you want how you want.

The LP2 also includes safety features that will halt engraving for vibrations, tilting, and if it begins to overheat ensuring a safe working environment when using the device.

One of the most notable features of the LaserPecker LP2 is its small footprint. With its compact and lightweight design, the LP2 can be set up almost anywhere. It can even be used handheld or set at an angle to engrave. Combine that with the battery accessory, and this makes the LaserPecker a unique laser engraver that works on the go. Thanks to this, many users have had success using it at arts and crafts fairs to engrave items on demand for customers.

Setup

The LaserPecker LP2 comes with everything you need in the box to get started, including the engraving head, platform with adjustable stand, a ruler, safety glasses, the cone protector, power cable, and the screws and Allen wrench for assembly.

I am a complete novice when it comes to laser engraving, and the LP2 is my first experience using anything beyond a laser pointer. Regardless, the LP2 was so easy to set up that I had it put together and engraving within minutes.

There are two screws to attach the base to the moving stand, and then one screw to attach the laser unit to the moving stand. LaserPecker even included an Allen wrench so no need to worry about having any tools on hand.

User experience

Laser engravers are nothing new. People have been using them to create for many years now, however, what LaserPecker has done is make it compact and user-friendly for consumers. It has done this by using a mirror to move the laser to cut down on the working area, and by creating an app to simplify the process of engraving.

LaserPecker deserves a lot of credit for its Design Space app. Making an app with so many features while also being easy to use is a herculean feat, and yet, LaserPecker pulled it off. Sure, there are some minor issues, such as a grammar error here and there. Additionally, if you get more than 10 feet away from the LP2 the app will lose connection and refuse to reconnect most of the time.

The app can also get closed in the background if you are multitasking on your phone and might not reconnect, but that’s more of a phone issue than one with the app. Regardless, as long as you keep your device near the LP2 and don’t open too many other apps, then the Design Space app is phenomenal.

I was impressed by how easy it was to load up images from my phone and make minor adjustments, as well as by how easy it is to create projects from within the app itself. You can enter any text you wish, load up a series of shapes or custom images you’ve found online into layers, and play with the orientation and size. It’s even possible to download and install new fonts, crop images, or remove distractions with a smart eraser tool.

While I admit I designed most of my custom creations on my computer first and transferred them over to my phone, I did create the pet collar entirely within the app. I also tried loading custom fonts to create some items for myself and my friends.

Don’t worry if you have no idea where to get started, though; LaserPecker has a library of images within the app that you can engrave until you begin creating or finding additional ones online. To my surprise, many of the designs are quite intricate and not generic-looking clipart files.

Most everything that I created using the LaserPecker LP2 went smoothly and everything worked great with the sample materials they provided for this review. The additional battery accessory made it easy to use the LP2 outside on the deck to prevent the house from filling up with smoke while engraving wood.

This is a great accessory to pick up, as is the cutting plate. I refrained from attempting to cut any wood while testing because without the cutting plate, it would have left marks all over the base plate.

Another accessory I would recommend is the protective magnetic shield. The included glasses did not fit well and were constantly slipping off of my head. Having the magnetic protective shield would have made it much easier, because while it comes with a protective cone, I found that it often got in the way of trying to line up objects for engraving.

Speaking of lining items up, the LP2 features a square or rectangle outline to preview the size and align it to the object before each engraving. This was a nice way to ensure your design will go where you want it to on the subject, but it would be great if the base allowed you to secure items in place as well.

As I mentioned above, LaserPecker makes an ingenious electric roller accessory to increase the size of its engraving area or for engraving cylinders such as drinking glasses or tumblers. I tried it out with a glass jar and some cardboard since I didn’t have any wood large enough to practice with. While it does a good job at increasing the working area, it’s important to remember you’ll still be limited to four inches in width.

For example, I would have loved to print these Star Wars designs at a larger size on a cutting board in the future, but this is as large as the LP2 can engrave. It would still work fine centered on a cutting board or serving board, but I’d love to go a few inches larger.

Text is a different story though. Four inches in width is plenty for the text on many signs, but you’ll have to be careful when using the trolley mode. That’s because if you want it centered you have to consider that the LP2 will roll off of the side of your platform and cannot go edge to edge.

This limited me to the size I used here for the LaserPecker logo. If I had gone any larger it wouldn’t have been centered because the LP2 would have rolled right off of the platform.

Another issue is that some users have reported that the LP2 doesn’t always roll straight in trolley mode. I experienced this myself on a couple, but not all of my tests. In some cases users have resorted to making a guide with wood or books to keep it straight.

Final thoughts

What LaserPecker has done with the LP2 is nothing short of remarkable. It has engineered a versatile laser engraver that works on a variety of materials, doesn’t take up much space, and has made it easy to use for beginners with a powerful and well-designed app. It would be perfect for any creator or maker out there looking to start an Etsy store, brand products for their company, or just to have fun creating unique gifts for friends and family.

I used the LaserPecker LP2 with a variety of materials over the past couple of weeks, including some I bought with my own money, such as these slate coasters or dog tags I bought from Amazon. I had an absolute blast engraving everything in sight for the past two weeks and creating some gifts for friends. One thing to note, if you want to use it with glass there is a lot of prep and some post work to be done. Wood, stone, leather, and anodized aluminum are much easier to work with.

The LaserPecker LP2 starts at $1,000 and can be purchased from Amazon or LaserPecker’s website. However, there is currently a $200 off coupon on Amazon dropping the price down to $769 if you’re looking to save a little money.

BLU Bold N3 review

If you’re in the market for a new smartphone but don’t want to break the bank, the BLU Bold N3 is a compelling option that might just exceed your expectations.

The BLU Bold line of phones is a series of Android smartphones produced by BLU Products, an American company known for offering budget-friendly mobile devices. BLU stands for “Bold Like Us,” which reflects the company’s approach to providing affordable smartphones with competitive features.

The BLU Bold line typically features smartphones that offer a balance between price and performance, making them attractive options for users who want a functional device without spending a significant amount of money. These phones often come with decent specifications, including midrange processors, displays, and camera systems, at a lower price point compared to flagship devices from more well-known brands.

The Bold N3 ($250) marks the third generation of this experience which is more or less the upscale approach to Blu’s budget-friendly unlocked phones. I’ve been impressed with the first two models (N1, N2) and, thus far, dig what’s on offer here for 2023.

Solid Hardware and Design

The design of the BLU Bold N3 is all about sleek elegance and modern technology integration. The phone boasts a symmetrical dual-curved screen, which not only adds to its aesthetics but also provides boundless views. This design choice enhances the immersive experience for users.

The curved edge might divide some users but I’ve not experienced any phantom swipes or accidental touches along the sides.

The device is meticulously crafted using premium materials, giving it a sense of luxury and durability. This design choice reflects a focus on both elegance and technology. It certainly does not look at all like a phone that’s priced as low as $250.

I’m reminded of the OnePlus 11 and Google Pixel 6 Pro when I hold this phone. With its tapered edges and curved screen and the giant camera array on the back, it feels classy and sophisticated, and pricier. The sage green color is a nice touch, too, and the whole thing comes across as elegant looking.

The N3 features a 6.78-inch 120Hz display, providing users with a higher refresh rate which results in smoother and more fluid motion, enhancing the visual experience for gaming and video watching.

Under the hood, the phone houses a MediaTek Dimensity 7050 Octa-Core CPU, including two Arm Cortex-A78 processors clocked up to 2.6GHz, delivering exceptional performance and rapid app response. The Arm Mali-G68 graphics engine ensures power efficiency and extends battery life, especially for gamers.

With 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, the phone provides enough memory and space for smooth multitasking and storage of photos, videos, and apps. I appreciate BLU leaning into the storage while other manufacturers are still plugging along at 128GB. Sure, it’s somewhat of a non-issue for many users, but it’s nice to have the space should one want or need it.

Camera Experience

The BLU Bold N3 boasts a versatile camera system that covers a wide range of photography needs, from capturing landscapes to detailed close-ups and beautiful selfies. Let’s take a closer look at the camera specifications:

Triple AI 50MP Super HDR Main Camera

  • The primary camera is a powerful 50MP sensor that utilizes AI (Artificial Intelligence) for advanced features.
  • Super HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology ensures that your photos have excellent clarity and dynamic range, even in challenging lighting conditions.
  • This camera is designed to capture intricate details and vibrant colors, making it ideal for various photography scenarios.
  • Whether you’re shooting in low light or bright sunlight, the AI capabilities help optimize your photos for the best results.

8MP Wide-Angle Camera

  • The 8MP wide-angle camera allows you to capture expansive scenes and large groups of people without the need to step back.
  • It’s perfect for landscape photography, group photos, and scenarios where you want to capture more in a single frame.
  • Wide-angle lenses add depth and drama to your shots, making them visually engaging.

2MP Macro Camera

  • The 2MP macro camera is designed for close-up photography, allowing you to capture the tiniest details of subjects up close.
  • It’s great for taking photos of small objects, intricate textures, or even the world of tiny insects and plants.
  • Macro photography opens up a new perspective, revealing the beauty of the miniature world.

16MP Selfie Camera

  • The 16MP selfie camera is tailored for taking striking self-portraits.
  • It uses AI to enhance your selfies, ensuring that your skin looks flawless and natural.

The combination of these cameras provides users with the tools to capture a wide range of creative and memorable photos. Whether you’re a photography enthusiast or just someone who enjoys taking pictures of everyday moments, the BLU Bold N3’s camera system is equipped to meet your needs.

I’m old enough to recall phones that cost three times this much with a fraction of the image quality. Results have been generally great across the board with snappy shutter speeds producing pictures with balanced and accurate colors.

There’s a number of shooting modes, aspect ratios, AI settings, and more to keep yourself busy but it doesn’t take long to figure things out. If I can leave you with one parting piece of advice in the camera, it’s to stay away from the 4x zoom. Let’s just say the results were less than desirable.

Battery and Charging

The Bold N3 is equipped with a 4,700mAh battery and supports 66W fast charging. Paired with the Dimensity 7050 CPU and 2400 x 1080 Resolution display, and you’ll get all-day battery life without worry. Plus, when it comes time to charge it up, things move along swimmingly.

Software – Android 13

The BLU Bold N3 runs on Android 13 out of the box, which makes setting up and transferring your old phone’s data a breeze. It’s a snappy and responsive experience, and the user interface is clean and functional. It’s very much a clean-looking vanilla Android but there’s quite a bit of customization hiding behind the settings.

I love being able to tweak my phone’s look and feel and Material You gives me a good starting point. Other settings in the N3 let users decide how it looks and behaves. Beyond wallpapers and colors you can adjust things like whether or not the edge lights up when you have notifications, and for which apps. Also, how do you like your app displayed? Play with icon size, notification dots, bold text, and more to your liking.

The side application bar is a handy tool for accessing some of your most often used apps or tools. And speaking of productivity and efficiency, you can also opt for lifting to wake your device, double tapping to wake, double tapping the camera, and other shortcuts and gestures.

I’d suggest spending a few minutes in the various menus over the first couple of days you use this phone. That way you can slowly dial up the personality and preferences.

Other Features and Notes

Other noteworthy features in the phone include NFC connectivity, Face ID and in-display fingerprint sensor, and 5G connectivity. We’ve come to expect these details in mid-range and upper-end phones nowadays but it’s here where a corner is sometimes cut for budget-priced devices.

As streamlined as the phone appears software-wise, it does come with a few preloaded apps and extras. Indeed, part of the setup process also asks whether you’d like to install some recommended titles. For some this might be a quick way to add your favorites; for others it might feel like (easily removed) bloatware.

Titles that you’ll likely end up with at start include games like Chain Cube, Dominoes, Hidden Objects, Hit Master 3D, Spades, Solitaire, Western Sniper, and Woodoku. Toss in FM Radio (use included USB-C earbuds), Moment (curated personalized news), and TikTok and you have a fair amount of apps and games on top of the standard Google suite.

I’m not certain what sort of major Android updates BLU is ready to commit to for the Bold N3 but it does tell me that we can expect at least two years of security patches. Given how Android’s evolution has somewhat slowed in recent years, the bug fixes and security stuff is more important.

Despite its many positives, the BLU Bold N3 has a few drawbacks and depending on the user, one or two could be a deal-breaker. The phone lacks an official water-resistant rating, so it’s best to keep it away from water. Wireless charging isn’t on the menu either, and there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack.

All things considered, and weighed against its predecessor, you come away with a device that’s not only boosted in a number of key areas, but it’s less expensive, too.

A Great Value Overall

In the grand scheme of things, the BLU Bold N3 offers excellent value for its price. The large, crisp AMOLED screen with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, fast charging, NFC, and Android 13 make it a solid choice for budget-conscious users.

The BLU Bold N3 showcases a sleek and lightweight design that combines premium materials with advanced technology features. It offers an immersive display, powerful hardware, efficient 5G connectivity, versatile camera capabilities, and extended battery life. It’s a compelling option for users looking for a balance between style and functionality in a budget-friendly smartphone.

The lack of guaranteed updates and the absence of support for carriers like AT&T and Verizon are downsides, but if you’re on T-Mobile or an MVNO that uses its network, it’s certainly an option worth exploring.

The BLU Bold N3 is a budget-friendly smartphone that delivers a lot more than you’d expect. It offers a flagship-like experience without the hefty price tag. If you’re looking for a capable smartphone that won’t break the bank, the BLU Bold N3 is an easy one to recommend.

Google’s Pixel Watch 2 is now official, bringing noteworthy internal upgrades

0

Google has officially unveiled its most anticipated next-gen Pixel series smartphones and new Pixel Watch at its Made By Google event. We have three new devices that Google unveiled- Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel Watch 2. All three latest devices got solid hardware upgrades from brand-new features to the latest in-house processor. Have a look at the detailed features of the Google Pixel Watch 2.

Google’s first-gen Pixel Watch was all about trying and testing- the dated hardware and incomplete features weren’t enough to make it a direct rival to Samsung’s Galaxy watches but things are different with the second iteration of the Google’s Pixel Watch. Google has undergone heavy internal upgrades to make a better competitor for the market that an Android user can look up to as the perfect alternative.

Google has added a lot of features to the Pixel Watch 2 including a new heart rate sensor, skin temperature sensors, personal safety sensors, and stress tracking. Google’s Pixel Watch 2 serves as a direct rival to Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 6 with more or less the same features. Google is more focused on the health-tracking capabilities with the Fitbit’s excellent fitness tracking.

Design-wise, there aren’t any major changes here, both have very identical designs. The Pixel Watch 2 boasts a Stainless steel build which is 10% lighter than last year’s model and feels lightweight so that you can wear it all day without any hiccups. Featuring the same curved circular 1.32-inch display as the last model which makes it very hard to find a difference between the Pixel Watch 1 and Pixel Watch 2. Google uses a thinner glass coating for the Pixel watch 2 offers great durability and protects from accidental falls and scratches.

Google highly prioritized the health and safety features for the Pixel Watch 2- the addition of a new heart rate sensor, body response sensor, and skin temperature sensor (same as the Pixel 8 Pro, track your stress level accurately at any time) tracks more accurate data and offers detailed insights. As for the Safety features, Google added a new Safety Check tool which basically runs on a timer. Suppose, it takes you 10 min to reach your home but if you didn’t make it home at an estimated time then your Pixel Watch 2 will share a live location with your added emergency contacts. In addition to that, Google also brings back Fall Detection and Emergency SOS safety features for the smartwatch.

Powering the Pixel Watch 2 by Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 chipset coupled with 2GB of dedicated RAM and 32GB of internal storage. With the Fitbit’s excellent fitness tracking, the Pixel Watch 2 tracks your fitness data more accurately than before. The latest addition automatic workout detection- detects your workouts automatically based on the workouts you are performing including running, walking, cycling, and other common workouts. If you are a fitness freak and want more control over the workouts, Google added personalized Heart Rate Zones and pace training. Google also offering a 6-month free Fitbit premium with a successful purchase of Pixel Watch 2.

There’s a significant improvement in battery life compared to last gen’s 1-day battery life. Google claims the Pixel Watch 2 lasts up to 24 hours with always-on display enabled and a bit more when disabled. It takes over 70 minutes to fully charge. Unfortunately, the Pixel Watch 2 doesn’t support wireless charging which is slightly disappointing here. The Pixel Watch 2 boots in-house Wear-OS 4 based on Android 13 out of the box. The watch is armed with Google’s ecosystem means you can access Google’s services like Google Assistant, Gmail, calendar, and more directly from your Pixel Wach 2.

That being said, the Pixel Watch 2 brings omnipotent upgrades over a last-gen model and it was inevitable as Google faced a lot of critiques for the first Google Pixel Watch.

Starting at $349 for the WiFi variant while the Pixel Watch 2 LTE variant will cost you $399. Pre-orders already started and shipping will start from October 12. It comes in four color options- Polished Silver, Matte Black, Champagne Gold, and Polished Porcelain. And there are a bunch of new watch band options Google offers which you have to purchase separately.

Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro Get a Creative Boost with AI-Powered Editing Features

0

Editing photos and videos on your smartphone just got a whole lot smarter, thanks to a quartet of new AI-driven editing features in Google Photos, exclusively available on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. These exciting updates build upon Google’s expertise in AI technology, incorporating new tools and techniques to bring your photos and videos to life in ways that were previously reserved for professional editors.

If there’s one thing that Pixel phones are known for, it’s their camera capabilities. Not only are they among the easiest to master but they’re incredibly smart, too. Each year, as we’ve seen, gets better and better.

Here’s a closer look at the innovative features that are new with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

Best Take: Perfect Group Photos

We’ve all experienced the challenge of capturing that perfect group photo where someone is always looking away or blinking. Google Photos now introduces the “Best Take” feature to make this ordeal a thing of the past.

via Google

Using a series of similar photos taken in quick succession, Best Take automatically creates a blended image that features everyone in the group with their best expressions. But here’s the kicker: if you prefer a different expression from one of the alternate shots, you can manually select it to achieve the group photo you envision.

Magic Editor: Reimagine Your Photos

The Magic Editor is a game-changer in photo editing. It leverages generative AI to simplify complex edits and allow you to align your photos with the essence of the moment you were trying to capture.

via Google

Whether you want to resize, reposition, or enhance lighting and background, Magic Editor makes it a breeze. After selecting an edit, it offers multiple result options, so you can fine-tune your photos to perfection.

It’s worth noting that Magic Editor is still in its early stages, part of the Labs experience, so there’s room for improvement based on user feedback. Google plans to enhance this feature further, introducing more intuitive generative AI elements to help you unleash your creativity in new ways.

Audio Magic Eraser: Clearer Videos

Much like unwanted photobombers, distracting background noises can ruin your videos. With the Audio Magic Eraser, you can take control of the audio in your videos.

Using advanced machine learning, this feature identifies and separates sounds like background chatter, music, or wind into distinct layers that you can adjust with just a few taps. Say goodbye to unwanted noise, and ensure your videos sound exactly the way you want them to.

Zoom Enhance: Focus on the Details

Coming soon to the Pixel 8 Pro, Zoom Enhance will revolutionize how you crop and zoom in on your photos. Using generative AI, Zoom Enhance intelligently fills in the gaps between pixels and predicts fine details, allowing for greater flexibility when framing your shots. This feature gives you the power to make your photo’s focal point stand out, even after the picture has been taken.

vie Google

These exciting enhancements in Google Photos, available exclusively on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, bring a new level of creative control to smartphone photography and videography. Whether you’re aiming for the perfect group shot, looking to finesse your photo edits, clear up audio in your videos, or focus on specific details after the fact, these AI-powered tools have got you covered.

Best Take, Magic Editor, and Audio Magic Eraser are set to be available on both devices starting October 12, offering users an array of creative possibilities right at their fingertips.
