Akko OnePiece Calligraphy 5108S review

For writers, the quest for the perfect typing tool is unending, yet the mechanical keyboard often emerges as the undisputed champion for boosting productivity. Its tactile feedback revolutionizes the typing experience, outshining traditional keyboards.

My journey through various brands led me to the Akko keyboard, generously provided by Akko for review. The OnePiece-themed Calligraphy 5108S special edition is not just a keyboard; it’s a tribute to the beloved anime.

Adorned with intricately carved OnePiece characters, pirate flags, and a unique font, this mechanical keyboard is not only a functional masterpiece but also a collector’s dream for any OnePiece enthusiast.

It’s a wired keyboard with solid key switches, a compact layout, and eye-grabbing RGB lighting. I put it on the test to check out whether it’s worthy of being one of the best mechanical keyboards on my list.

Pros

  • Sturdy chassis with OnePiece-themed design
  • Solid PBT keycaps
  • Mesmerizing customizable RGB lighting
  • Marvellous typing experience
  • Pleasing sound
  • Dedicated programming software

Cons

  • No Hot Swap support
  • Slightly heavy

Unboxing

The unboxing experience with Akko’s OnePiece Calligraphy 5108S special edition mechanical keyboard was a good one. The one thing I liked about the special edition is- you get everything from the keyboard to the box which is fully customized with the special edition theme. My first impression of the OnePiece Calligraphy 5108S mechanical keyboard was great – It feels sturdy and slightly heavy.

Design

  • 100% layout
  • OnePiece-themed PBT keycaps
  • Sturdy build with no flex

Akko opts out with a 100% layout design for the OnePiece Calligraphy 5108S mechanical keyboard that enables good functionality. It has a sturdy plastic chassis build that feels solid and slightly heavy with no flex. Finished in the signature grey color on the sides, looks quite attractive and premium.

The 100% layout did feel quite large but it gives you entire control under your hands from the number pad, alphabetical keys, and additional function keys, to F series keys. However, I’m a fan of 65% which makes me quite comfortable while using but some people still prefer 100%. If you are a big space saver then this keyboard isn’t your thing. As for dimensions, the OnePiece Calligraphy 5108S measures 442 x 132 x 41mm (17 inches) and weighs approximately 1.5kg- as I already mentioned above the keyboard did feel slightly heavy in hand.

The Akko Calligraphy 5108S is a marvel of engineering, boasting PBT material keycaps with Akko’s proprietary CS Sakura switches. These switches offer a smooth and tactile experience, far surpassing the durability and feel of the ABS plastic found in standard entry-level gaming keyboards.

Akko’s meticulous use of Dye Sublimation printing technology brings every detail to life on these switches. From the intricate OnePiece characters and symbols to the Japanese texts, each element is exquisitely carved, adding a unique flair to the keyboard. The striking three-color palette of yellow, white, and grey not only enhances the keyboard’s aesthetic but also pays homage to the OnePiece universe.

The space bar, featuring OnePiece’s main character, Luffy, in an aggressive stance, and highlighted with the series’ name in bold red Japanese script, radiates the essence of pirate adventures. Complementing this is the enter key, finished in an iconic yellow with the OnePiece logo, adding a striking touch to this exceptional keyboard.

As for connectivity, there is no dongle or Bluetooth connectivity, it only supports a USB-C port placed on the back side of the keyboard. With the built-in sturdy dual kickstands, the keyboard provides a nice range of height adjustments.

Performance

  • Excellent Typing experience
  • Good key travel
  • Solid PBT keycaps

The OnePiece Calligraphy 5108S has sturdy PBT keycaps with the top surface of the keys having rounded curves that feel excellent while typing. It has linear-type keys with a total travel of 4mm and the N-Key rollover support lets you type as many keys as you like at once.

There is a dedicated calculator, volume control, and mute keys on the keyboard which I liked the most. Akko does offer OnePiece-themed one full set of functional keys which you can easily swap out with the help of a switch puller to change with the original one.

Switching from my daily driver mechanical keyboard to OnePiece Calligraphy 5108S was hassle-free- meaning I didn’t take any time to adjust my hands on the keys, thanks to the rounded OSA keycaps. As for the typing experience, it was great and so satisfying to type, and listening to the keycap’s clacky sound was even more pleasing. The mechanical keyboards do make noise while typing but that isn’t the case with Akko’s Calligraphy 5108S- It was quieter than my mechanical keyboard.

I played some titles like NFS Payback and Valorant with the OnePiece Calligraphy 5108S keyboard. My experience was excellent thanks to its compact size switches.

Software and Lighting

  • Mesmerizing RGB lighting
  • Programming software support

The Akko OnePiece Calligraphy 5108S enhances user experience with the Akko Wired Manager Software. This software enables key remapping and macro creation, allowing for a more personalized keyboard setup.

While RGB lighting on mechanical keyboards is a matter of personal taste, the OnePiece Calligraphy 5108S offers a range of lighting options, including a unique ‘music rhythm’ preset that synchronizes with the beats of your music.

Users can also tailor the RGB lighting to their liking using the Akko Wired Manager software. Additionally, the keyboard features a dedicated game mode in the software, designed to optimize keyboard performance for gaming.

You should buy this if…

  • You are a OnePiece anime fan
  • You want a mechanical keyboard with solid switches and sturdy chassis
  • You want RGB lighting with dozens of presets

You shouldn’t buy this if…

  • You don’t want a customized edition
  • You prefer a minimal layout design

Final Thoughts

The Akko OnePiece Calligraphy 5108S mechanical keyboard strikes a notable balance between form and function. Its compact design, combined with durable PBT keycaps, ensures a satisfying clack with each keystroke, making it ideal for both typing and gaming. The fully customizable RGB lighting and the ability to remap keys or create macros through the Akko Wired Manager software add to its versatility. Additionally, the ease of swapping keys heightens its appeal as an affordable, yet highly functional mechanical keyboard, suitable for gamers and typists alike.

However, the absence of hot-swappable keycaps support is a minor drawback, limiting the ability to customize switch types for varied typing experiences. The keyboard’s weight, approximately 1.5kg, might be a consideration for those who frequently travel with their keyboard. While it features USB Type-C connectivity, the lack of Bluetooth options slightly narrows its flexibility in wireless setups.

Priced at $119, the Akko OnePiece-themed Calligraphy 5108S stands out in the market as an affordable yet sturdy option. Its solid build, combined with an excellent typing and gaming experience, makes it a valuable addition, especially for those seeking an anime-themed keyboard to enhance their setup.

Several anime and manga genres about gambling aren’t just entertaining but teach you about the world of high rollers. These unique series have gained a lot of fans over the years because they provide exclusive insight into how gamblers think while maintaining the fun and action of anime series. This piece will show some of the best options to add to your collection.

4 Gambling Manga Series You Can Also Watch As Animes

Here are the four exciting options you should try first:

Kaiji

In 1996, Nobuyuki Fukumoto wrote Kaiji, a high-demand Japanese manga. It follows the story of Kaiji Itou, a young man who finds himself in a difficult situation due to his debt to a notorious loan shark. Out of desperation to pay off his debts, Kaiji starts gambling with the high rollers in his area. He quickly discovers his exceptional gambling skills and uses them to his advantage. However, he still struggles in the series as he faces several trials.

Due to the popularity of Kaiji, there have been two anime adaptations of the story since then, and there will most likely be more in the future. There is also a live-action version of Kaiji for those who want the most realistic visuals. If you love a solid storyline about personal growth and don’t mind dark themes, Kaiji is a must-read manga.

The Legend of the Gambler: Tetsuya

The Legend of the Gambler: Tetsuya is a captivating series written by Fūmei Sai. It’s set in a post-war era where gambling is a way of survival. The protagonist, Tetsuya, is a skilled gambler in the shady alleys of Shinjuku. Amidst his adventures, he hears rumors of a luxurious and almost mythical gambling establishment, often compared to the renowned Cresus Casino for its extravagance and the caliber of gamblers it attracts. Tetsuya’s journey eventually leads him to this establishment, where he faces some of the most challenging and thrilling games of his career.

Published initially in 1997 in the Kindai Mahjong magazine, “The Legend of the Gambler: Tetsuya” quickly captured the hearts of readers. Its blend of historical settings, strategic gambling scenes, and the allure of a casino reminiscent of the grandeur of Cresus Casino makes it a fascinating read. The anime adaptation further brings to life the intense atmosphere of high-stakes gambling.

One Outs

If you love sports and gambling, One Outs offers a compromise. It is about Toua Tokuchi, a baseball player with fantastic talent. However, Tokuchi doesn’t just want to make money from pitching. He also wants to make money from high-stakes gambling. Tokuchi insists that any club that wants to sign him must add high-stakes gambling to the contract if they want him on their team. His journey to the championship is full of many turns that make the story all the more enjoyable.

After Shinobu Kaitani wrote One Outs in 1998, it was published in the Shueisha and quickly became a nationwide sensation for manga lovers. It has since gained fans globally and has been adapted into an anime for those who prefer to watch their stories.

Kakegurui

Another amazing Japanese manga you should read is Kakegurui. It is about an unusual gambling school where students are ranked based on their gambling skills. The better your skill, the higher your social rank among other students. All the authority figures in the student council are master gamblers, but their positions become at risk when Yumeko Jabami shows up. Jabami is a transfer student who quickly learns that she needs to be a gambling genius to gain respect in the school.

The story is centered around Yumeko Jabami trying to take the student council down and run things by outsmarting them with her intellect. Since it hit the market in 2014, Kakegurui has gained a reputation as one of the best gambling-based manga in the industry. Square Enix published the story by Homura Kawamoto in the Gangan Joker magazine and now has an anime series with the same name.

Bottom Line

Mangas and animes about gambling aren’t just entertaining. They also teach you excellent skills. You will learn a lot from watching the character development of all the protagonists in the mangas highlighted in this article. There are many others you should consider after reading these. These include Akagi, Gamble Fish, Saki, Gin to Kin, Usogui, and Legendary Gambler Tetsuya, among others. Pick a few you like and read them one after the other.

ExpressVPN best VPN for Android due to ease of use

0

ExpressVPN has emerged the VPN of choice when it comes to Android use in 2023. This view is made known in an online post published by CNET. The post also briefly mentioned other top players in the industry.

Significance of VPN for Android

Users of Android tablets or smartphones are very keen on maintaining their safety and privacy when they use the internet. Many of these users have appreciated the use of virtual private network to secure their devices online.

Truly, the device in use, the mobile apps downloaded, and the overall browsing behavior could give away one’s IP address. Those seeking your physical location may find it without hassles. VPN use is definitely the best way to conceal oneself when users don’t want their privacy violated.

The best VPN services protect users from leaking precious geo-location information to Google. They can also protect the user’s browsing habits from being learned by the internet provider.

Why ExpressVPN is a top pick

This year, the guys at CNET employed a rigorous testing process to grade the performance of the most popular Android VPNs sold on the market. It is a culture for the organization to do that each year.

ExpressVPN happens to be the top pick for the best Android VPN because of its outstanding performance, especially noted on its Android app. Furthermore, the app scores high due to its commitment to privacy and transparency. Users have praised the app for being uncluttered, easy to use, and fast connectivity.

However, it is more expensive than others of its kind, making it out of reach for those who don’t have much to spend on such apps.

Key features of ExpressVPN app

  • Password Manager
  • Tracker blocker
  • Ad blocker
  • TrustedServer technology
  • Network Lock kill switch
  • Private DNS
  • Best-in-class encryption
  • No activity or connection logs
  • Lightway protocol

Top factors buyers consider

Buyers of Android VPN often consider many reasons when making a choice. True, it can be difficult arriving at the right decision. So, they base their decisions on a few pointers such as privacy, speed, usability, and cost.

Instead of using a free VPN, CNET recommends paid app such as the ExpressVPN. Users won’t appreciate getting their data sold or their devices riddled with malware.

Soundcore AeroFit and Aerofit Pro review

Soundcore has more than established itself as the audio brand from Anker as the company consistently pumps out exceptional wireless earbuds and speakers for consumers that stand up nicely next to the bigger players.

I’ve been testing the latest from Soundcore with the AeroFit and AeroFit Pro wireless earbuds. These new open-ear designed sports buds have so much shared DNA, but they are unique in their own right. We’ll cover them both in this full review.

Design

At first glance, these look like any run-of-the-mill hook-styled earbuds. These do have a hook with over the ear basic design, but when you look closer the details start to show. The key difference is the speakers of both AeroFit models isn’t meant to be fully inserted into the ear.

This “open” design lends to a few things, but the main feature is transparent hearing for your surroundings while enjoying audio. The AeroFit’s fit allows you to have the earbud comfortably sit on the outside of the ear with directional audio while still allowing your environmental sounds available as well.

While the basic design is very similar, the AeroFit Pro offers some unique offerings over the standard AeroFit. One, the Pro has an increase in drivers from 14mm to 16.2mm to create a more robust listening experience. This with additional battery life of up to 14 hours makes these slightly larger overall as well.

Controls are also handled slightly differently. The AeroFit has a capacitive area for touch-based, while the Pro models feature a dedicated button for controls. Each of these can be customized along with audio profiles in the Soundcore app.

This biggest addition to the AeroFit Pro is an optional detachable neckband. This branded band is adjustable for a secure fit and can be attached to the hooks of the AeroFit Pro hooks. The band is a great way to offer on-demand stabilization to those that may not need it all the time, but may have times like a HIIT workout where you’d want the neckband.

Audio performance

I’m torn on the playback quality of both of the AeroFit units. I get immersive sound is going to take a hit by the pure design, but it really does show up. If you are used to the fully in-ear experience of most earbuds, the more muted sounds from the AeroFit and Pro will take you a bit to adapt.

Turning on spatial audio seems to make this even more pronounced. Flipping this switch in the Soundcore app makes the audio seem like it’s being emitted from a metal barrel. Yes, you get the spatial part as you move around, but the quality immediately takes a hit during my usage.

I found myself landing on the Soundcore Signature profile for the best experience. Here you do get a robust balance of effects that I enjoyed. Even when listening to something more vocal like a podcast, the AeroFit and Pro both performed well.

Lastly, I do want to mention the environmental aspects of both models. The ability of hearing your surroundings is significant. This is great for on a run or walk outdoors, and even better when in an office setting. Allowing the noise from around you can be a good thing, and Soundcore building this into the AeroFit earbuds is a nice addition.

Battery life

I’ve found Anker’s estimation of 14 hours to the Pro model and 11 hours to the AeroFit to be realistic. This is with general listening around 50-60% volume levels. I’ve also taken calls and saw no large dips in battery life here.

One omission for the price of each AeroFit and Pro is wireless charging on the cases. Yes, it has Anker’s quick charging, but Qi charging is pretty standard for any earbud case claiming to reach the “premium” price point of above $100.

The total playback for the AeroFit Pro is 46 hours and 42 hours for the standard when paired with the case. You can get 5.5 hours of playback and 4 hours via quick charge with each model. This is impressive and a must if you aren’t going to include wireless charging.

Conclusion

I applaud Soundcore for constantly searching for new ways to bring us quality audio. The AeroFit and AeroFit Pro earbuds continue this tradition with an open ear design that will be appealing for a subset of users. The comfortable fit and removable neckband on the Pro series makes these interesting for any active listener.

You can snag the AeroFit in both white and black for $130 while the AeroFit Pro will cost you another $40 and is available in only black. This is a premium level price for earbuds, but the unique design may make them worth it for those looking for this fit.

Soundcore Motion 100 review

As smart home enthusiasts increasingly embrace Wi-Fi audio through devices like Google Homes and Apple HomePods, there remains a notable gap in their audio arsenal: portability. This is precisely where the Soundcore Motion 100 Bluetooth speaker carves its niche, offering a compelling solution for those seeking quality sound on the go.

Design

The Soundcore Motion 100 is pretty small overall. It’s about the size of a hoagie roll (I must be hungry). It’s also kind of shaped like one with a rounded rectangle casing. The covering is a mix of synthetic fabrics and soft-touch plastics.

The entire Soundcore Motion 100 is fully waterproof with an IPX7 rating. Anker claims this makes the Motion 100 fully submersible and can float. This makes this small speaker a fantastic option for lake outings or hanging by the pool.

Internally, the Soundcore Motion 100 is powered with 20 Watts of audio drivers and a power bank rated to last up to 12 hours. Other notables are Bluetooth 5.3 for smooth connections and TWS to link multiple Motion 100 speaker in tandem.

Atop the Motion 100 is an array of buttons and controls. Lastly, there’s a built-in carrying strap on one side of the Motion 100. This is great for the purpose of the device. Being able to easily transport from location to location is a nice touch.

Sound

The audio quality from the Soundcore Motion 100 is impressive. The fact that a rich and loud output comes from such a small device is proof that Soundcore has been doing this for years and has the chops to perform with anyone in the space. I don’t care who it is, this speaker can easily compete.

This is powered by the 20 Watts of power and dual 15 Watt drivers. There’s also two passive 75Hz bass radiators to handle those low, deep tones. It’s a compact package with true performance inside.

The highs and mids come through with a crispness that doesn’t get drowned out by bass. The bass is punchy and doesn’t overpower the vocals. And with the design of the speaker arrays in the Motion X100 makes it perform well regardless of location as well.

Need a little extra bass? Soundcore has thought of that too. Thankfully, there’s BassUp button that increases the power of the bass audio. Clicking the button turns this feature on and off.

Battery life

Soundcore estimates the battery to last up to 12 hours on the Motion 100. I’ve found this to be fairly accurate. We’ve spent multiple days by the pool trying to soak up the final bit of warm weather this season. The Soundcore Motion 100 has lasted several sessions of around four hours without blinking an eye.

When you do need to top off the tanks, the Motion 100 can be charged via USB-C. I will say it’s not very fast of a charging process. The full recharge takes around five hours.

Conclusion

I’ve enjoyed my time with the Soundcore Motion 100. Whether you need this speaker at an indoor party, out by the pool, or camping in the good outdoors, it has you covered. With the excellent audio, good battery life, and IPX7 waterproofing, you can take it anywhere.

You can get the Soundcore Motion 100 from Amazon for about $60. If you act now, the price is reduced by $12. This is more than reasonably priced to enter this market and even undercuts many of the “premium” options. You can snag this great speaker from each link below.
