Google Presents Host of Android Updates at CES 2024

At CES 2024, Google has unveiled a series of updates to the Android ecosystem, enhancing the way devices connect and interact across different platforms. These updates, announced by Sameer Samat, GM and VP of Android Ecosystem, are designed to streamline user experience across phones, laptops, TVs, cars, and smart home devices.

New Quick Share Feature

In collaboration with Samsung, Google has merged the best of Nearby Share and Samsung’s Quick Share into a unified solution for Android and Chromebook ecosystems.

The new Quick Share allows users to easily share files between devices, with privacy controls to manage discoverability. This feature will be rolling out to current Nearby Share enabled devices next month.

Fast Pair on Big Screens

Expanding Fast Pair support, Google is bringing this feature to Chromecast with Google TV, and later to other Google TV devices. This allows users to quickly connect Bluetooth accessories like headphones and speakers to enjoy their favorite content.

Casting Capabilities Expanded

Google is now enabling TikTok casting from phones to Chromecast built-in devices, with live video casting coming soon. Additionally, 2024 LG TVs will feature Chromecast built-in, as will LG Hospitality and Healthcare TVs, allowing users to stream content seamlessly in various settings.

New Music Casting Feature

A novel casting feature will be rolled out this year, enabling users to transfer music playing on Spotify or YouTube Music from a Pixel phone to a docked Pixel Tablet.

Matter for Smart Home Interoperability

Google is supporting the Matter standard, turning LG TVs and certain Google TV and Android TV OS devices into hubs for Google Home. This will simplify adding and controlling Matter devices in the home network.

Android Auto Enhancements for Electric Vehicles

Android Auto is set to receive upgrades, starting with the Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning. It will share real-time battery information with Google Maps, enhancing the driving experience for electric vehicle users.

Google Apps in More Cars

This feature will provide drivers with estimated battery levels upon arrival, suggest charging stops, and estimate charging durations, making electric vehicle journeys more convenient.

Seamless Trip Planning Integration

For cars with Google built-in, trip planning has been made easier. Drivers can now send trips planned on Google Maps directly from their Android or iOS phones to their car, streamlining the transition from planning to navigating.

New Apps for Information and Entertainment

Android Auto is expanding its app offerings. The Chrome browser is rolling out in beta to select Polestar and Volvo cars, with more to follow, allowing drivers to browse the internet safely while parked. For entertainment, PBS KIDS and Crunchyroll shows are now available in select cars with Google built-in. The Weather Channel app has also been added, offering hourly forecasts and real-time weather updates right from the dashboard.

Expanding Brand Partnerships

Android Auto continues to grow its compatibility with major car brands, already present in over 200 million cars. Additionally, Google built-in is expanding to include models from Nissan, Ford, Lincoln, and future Porsche models.

Digital Car Key Availability

The roll-out of digital car keys is expanding to select Volvo cars and more brands in the future. This feature allows drivers to unlock, lock, and start their car with supported Android phones and share keys securely with friends and family on both iOS and Android devices.

Asus Levels up Gaming Phones with ROG 8 Series

The gaming smartphone maker Asus forged one of the finest ROG phones for 2024, bringing a new refreshing look, a new high-performance chip, improved camera hardware, a new cooling system, and tons of gaming features. Asus’s premium ROG 8 is now official in the international markets, slaying people’s hearts with its new killer design.

The major change you’ll see in its design- Asus completely overhauls the back design of the smartphone, switching to a new sleek and lighter design, which looks stunning. The latest ROG devices aim to offer a more mainstream flagship experience than its predecessors. Another new addition is the improved cooling system you get in the ROG 8 which keeps the device cool in while gaming. 

Furthermore, Asus has changed the entire camera module design of the phone with the triple rear camera setup at the back. This time Asus incorporated the best camera lenses including a 50MP Sony IMX890 main camera with best-in-class gimbal stabilization tech. The main unit is coupled with a 32MP 3x telephoto lens with 30x digital zoom and 10x hyper clarity zoom support which is the first time on any ROG Phone and a 13MP ultrawide sensor. On the front, there is a 32MP selfie camera for capturing stunning selfies and video chats.  

As for internals, the ROG Phone 8 series smartphone is powered by Qualcomm’s high-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset paired with massive up to 24GB of RAM and up to 1TB internal storage. You get a big 6.78-inch FHD+ OLED screen with a whooping 165Hz refresh rate and up to 2500 nits of peak brightness. It packs a 5,500mAh battery (down from 6,000mAh last year) with 65W fast charging support and it also has wireless charging support. 

The ROG 8 runs on the latest Android 14 operating system based on typical ROG UI out of the box. The rest of the features of ROG 8 include WiFI 7 support, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an IP-68 rating, and two USB-type C ports. 

The Asus ROG 8 retails at $1,099 for the base 12GB/256GB model and the ROG 8 Pro variant with 16GB/512GB model starts at $1,199. There is also a 24GB/1TB variant, starting at $1,499. The phone is now already up for pre-orders.

TCL unveils new premium QD Mini LED TV lineup including a big 115” TV

Global technology leader TCL has officially introduced its new premium QD Mini LED TV lineup at CES 2024. TCL has raised the bar in 2024 by adding a massive 115-inch TV option which is TCL’s biggest screen size ever, taking the home entertainment experience to the next level. TCL brings dozens of improvements to its 2024 lineup from better backlighting, modern cosmetic designs, and built-in multi-channel sound, to new TCL APIQ processing. 

TCL is expanding its new 2024 premium TV lineup under the same S-class and Q-class umbrellas where S-Class for Smart TV and Q-Class for QLED TV. Along with that TCL also introduced a new premium QD Mini LED TV with wider screen options under the Q-class that focused on offering unparalleled gaming, sports, and cinema experiences. 

TCL brings a new S5 4K smart TV in the S-Class that aims to offer best-in-class 4K UHD performance. This year the brand is more focused on offering bigger screen sizes and incorporating new modern designs for better sound and picture viewing. TCL’s new S5 4K TV will be available in 43-inch to 85-inch screen sizes. 

The S5 sports a high-brightness LED backlight 4K panel that offers crisp and clear visuals with more enhanced colors. Now, TCL’s S-class TVs also come with the premium TCL AIPQ processor with AI super-resolution that boosts overall image quality and makes it brighter, clearer, and more vivid. The S5 has TCL’s all-new Fullview 360 cosmetic design that offers great viewing angles. 

As for Q-Class, TCL introduced the Q6, Q6 Pro, QM7, and QM8 premium range of QLED TVs with 28% brighter panels compared to the predecessor. Speaking about the Q6 series, TCL packs a QLED display enhanced by Quantum Dot technology that delivers stunning picture quality, and the 120Hz panel refresh rate makes everything super smooth. The Q6 Pro has a full array of local dimming for deeper black levels and the panel supports up to 600 nits of peak brightness, offering a 33% brighter display. The Q6 will be available in 43-inch to 98-inch screen sizes while the Q6 Pro will be available in 50-inch to 85-inch screen sizes. 

Furthermore, the QM7 is loaded with more premium features compared to the Q6 series including a premium high zone QD Mini LED panel with a massive 2400 nits of peak brightness that offers immersive visuals and a 120Hz refresh rate support making the gaming experience even more smoother. Other features include Game Accelerator 240, HDR Ultra support with Dolby Vision iQ, and dual channel speaker with built-in subwoofer. It will be coming in 55-inch to 98-inch screen options. 

The QM8 has all the features of the QM7 but what makes the QM8 different is the QD color Ultra anti-glare panel with up to 5000 nits of peak brightness that produces incredibly dynamic images. It comes in 65-inch to 98-inch screen options. 

Lastly, the TCL’s first-ever massive 115-inch QD Mini LED TV comes with a TCL AIPQ Ultra processor that delivers exceptional picture quality and thanks to the new full-view 360 cosmetic design offers stunning views from every angle.
