Crypto and AI could join forces in the future

Ethereum is the second largest crypto in the world based on market capitalization levels, but that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t affected by the major fluctuations that rocked the digital asset sector over the past couple of years. However, 2024 is predicted to be a positive year for the market, with prices picking up speed and investors seeing considerable returns. Before that happens, investors must consolidate their portfolios and ensure that they’ve acquired as many coins as they need to. The issue of how to buy crypto currency becomes important here, as the price fluctuations can contribute to losses for beginner traders.

And while the market has been around for quite a while, innovation continues to be the most critical asset of the crypto ecosystem. Here are some of the novelties that will impact the marketplace in 2024.

AI

Artificial intelligence has come to the forefront of technological developments in 2023. While many are stoked about the potential for innovation and better efficiency, others are concerned about possible issues such as surveillance or the propagation of fake news. For the crypto space, the biggest threat has been an increasing push towards centralization. And while some investors and analysts are concerned that a coalition between the blockchain and AI could spell trouble for the former, there are also some who believe it will be a positive thing.

One of them is Vitalik Buterin, one of the Ethereum co-founders. Buterin believes AI tech could be the solution to an issue located deep within the coin’s coding. It’s the bugs located in the system which could pose serious technical challenges and risks for users. It’s not artificial intelligence itself but rather AI-based auditing that can be employed to identify and fix all the errors present in the code.

Dencun

Buterin’s statements have arrived during an essential time for Ethereum as the platform prepares to launch the much-awaited and highly-anticipated Dencun upgrade. The projected date is March 13th, but things can change on extremely short notice in the crypto environment. The last upgrade on the network allowed investors to withdraw their staked funds, something that was initially expected to cause disturbances across the market.

Analysts believed that the massive withdrawals would destabilize prices and cause the coin to plunge to very low levels. Luckily, this didn’t occur, and after a momentary event that saw more withdrawals, investors started staking more. The figures eventually reached record levels previously unseen in the Ethereum market. The reason for this activity is that investors felt that the ability to withdraw their funds whenever they feel like it gives them more freedom, so they feel safer staking as well.

Dencun was already implemented on the Goerli testnet as early as January 17th, but the event was overshadowed by a bug that prevented the finalization for approximately four hours. All upgrades are crucial for the long-term roadmap of the blockchain.

Future updates

This will naturally not be the last upgrade the Ethereum blockchain will get. On January 2nd, Vitalik Buterin shared the coin’s roadmap for the following upgrades, and there’s a lot in store for ETH over the following years. The Merge changed the system from a proof-of-work to a proof-of-stake consensus, and occurred in September 2022. It integrated the mainnet with the Beacon Chain blockchain.

The Surge is the next step, and it aims to complete roughly 100,000 transactions per second. It will enhance the blockchain’s scalability after the Merge reduced its carbon footprint and decreased emissions by 99%, making Ethereum far more sustainable. The Surge will also operate on Layer 2 networks. The Scourge is the next projected update, and it aims to mitigate the risks related to the MEV, the Maximal extractable value. It will also help with liquid pooling and address concerns surrounding the emergence of centralization in the ETH ecosystem.

Next up is the Verge, which is set to make block verification a much simpler endeavor so that all it takes is downloading a few bytes of data and performing some basic-level computations. The Purge will eliminate all technical debt and minimize the costs of participating in the network. It will also simplify the processes and the protocol itself. Then, the Splurge will fix all the loose ends and see to everything that the previous updates didn’t solve.

EIPs

In October 2023, Ethereum core developers began discussing the schedule around the next mainnet hard fork for the first time. No significant issues occurred in the meantime, and the Dencun upgrade was launched on the testnet just according to plan. In the future, the Goerli network will be subjected to deprecation, meaning that client developers won’t maintain it any longer. This is the last time it is part of a testing regimen, and the Holešky will replace it in the future.

At the moment of its launch on September 15th, the new testnet had a 1.6 billion supply in native coins, meaning that it is potentially more accessible than the older model. This is ten times the amount of coins located on the mainnet, but developers were comfortable producing this amount as employing roughly 10B of supply is the norm among devnets. The other improvement proposals include account abstraction. ERC-4337 and ERC-6900 will center on the concept of smart accounts.

This has considerable implications for the end-user experience, as it will allow investors to reduce transaction costs and guarantee social logins. Transient Storage Opcodes and Restrict Self Destruct, also known as EIP-1153 and EIP-6780, are expected to reduce gas fees and enhance both stability and scalability within the network.

Competitive edge

Although it might not seem so on the surface, the crypto environment is actually quite competitive. The upcoming upgrades could make Ethereum more adept at facing its rivals and give it a competitive edge over other cryptocurrencies. This is particularly important in the context of the emergence of the so-called Ethereum killers, the most important of which is said to be Solana. As the marketplace continues to change, the older coins are consolidating their positions, but they also need to take the necessary measures and precautions to keep up with the newcomers.

Ethereum is one of the most trustworthy and reliable cryptocurrencies, but it is still a relatively new asset class. 2024 is set to bring new developments for the blockchain, so investors have much to look forward to.

Level Up Your Workspace with OWC Thunderbolt GO Dock and SSD Storage Options

Other World Computing (OWC) may not be a name you’re familiar with, but the company has been making premium SSDs, dongles, and full-blown docking stations for years. I have to admit that I didn’t really have the company on my radar until recently. The new work-from-home movement has made me obsessed with USB-C docks, and this is something I definitely wanted to check out from OWC.

I reached out to OWC to possibly do a review, and they did me one better, and I’d like to share my thoughts on multiple devices in their lineup in this Level Up series. Allow me to introduce you to them now with the OWC Thunderbolt Go Dock, Express 1M2 NVMe SSD Enclosure, and finally, the Envoy Pro Mini portable USB-C and USB-A SSD stick.

OWC Thunderbolt Go Dock

Let’s just start with a design aesthetic you’ll see with all three of the devices we’ll cover here. OWC hasn’t sent over a device made of plastic. Zero. The Thunderbolt Go Dock is completely made from stamped, grooved aluminum. It adds a heft and durability to the Go that you don’t see much in the market.

The entire casing looks like an actual tool or something you’d see in a workshop. I love this look and how it adds a bit of personality to not just make this another plastic, black box in your workspace. This has purpose and substance.

Spec wise, OWC doesn’t disappoint either. Just like the metal of the outside, the inside has the horsepower to keep up. The Thunderbolt 4 upstream port offers a full 90W of juice to make sure the thing keeps up with anything you plug into it. It even has Thunderbolt share that allows you to daisy-chain multiple TB4 hosts if they are equipped with the Intel EVO series CPUs.

There’s a ton of compatibility in the port selection found on the OWC Go Dock. You’re gonna be hard-pressed to find a combination that can’t support all your peripherals. You have an SD card, 3.5mm audio jack, USB-A 2.0, and USB-C 3.2 on the front of the unit.

Setting up my workspace was simple. I connected my Dell laptop with Thunderbolt to the upstream port and off we went. From there, I added two displays via a DisplayPort splitter via USB-C. My mouse and keyboard were next, along with my trusty Brother’s laser printer.

This is my essentials, but the dock handle other peripherals in my testing. This included multiple hard drives, a Bluetooth adapter, Dymo printer, and of course, the next options from OWC. Pricing starts at $299 to get this rig for your desk right now.

OWC Express 1M2 SSD enclosure

The Express 1M2 has at least one too many numerals in the name, but doesn’t hold back in performance and design. This all-metal NVMe SSD enclosure allows you to have top tier drive write speeds while on the go with the power and compatibility of USB-C. Together, it’s a potent combination for those who need external storage not dedicated to a specific workspace.

The all aluminum design is also present with the Express 1M2. With the external hard drive, it looks more like the high-end heat sink you’d see on gamer PCs. This ribbed exterior may be intentional and functional to pull heat from the fanless SSD slot.

Internally, you can reveal a single NVMe M.2 slot with just a Philips screwdriver. The onboard system supports an SSD of up to 8TB of storage space, making this not only a great portable option, but upgradeable as your storage space grows. The drives can be M.2 2230, M.2 2242, or M.2 2280 “M Key” variety.

This thing is fast too. With USB-4, you can keep consistent write speeds of up to 40Gbps. I’ve found this to be accurate in my usage with multiple devices. Using Linux, Windows, and an Android tablet, these all registered close to this max under most conditions. Availability and pricing starts at $220 for the 1TB variant, with the maxed out version with 8TB costing around $1,500.

OWC Envoy Pro Mini

Finally, we have one of the smallest offerings in the OWC lineup: the Envoy Pro Mini. I can’t say how much I love this 1TB pen drive. Again, the all metal design is fantastic. It has a smooth body with gnarling on the edges that provide just the right amount of texture to help pull and push the drive into input ports.

Speeds on the Envoy Pro Mini are exceptional as well with the SSD drive inside the thumb drive. Moving files onto the drive is fast and I had no failed attempts. Read and write speeds shouldn’t be an issue for any user in the market for a top-notch thumb drive.

My favorite feature of the Envoy Pro Mini might be that it support both USB-C and the traditional USB-A in the same device. With a unique pivoting hinge, OWC has found a great way to support both options. This is a nice touch from a company that knows that ports come at a premium, and you may be limited to a USB-A in certain situations.

Pricing for the OWC Envoy Pro Mini starts at $80 for the 250GB models. If you need the maximum storage of 1TB, it will set you back $170 to add to your shopping cart.

Upgrade your peripherals now with the OWC lineup

OWC has a plethora of options, and I can’t be more impressed with the three items I’ve tested. The Thunderbolt GO Dock is exceptional in expanding any workspace. With the ability to have multiple displays, accessories, and even another Thunderbolt device attached, it can easily be the one solution for any desktop.

Add the OWC Express 1M2 and Envoy Pro Mini SSDs and you have the portable storage you need both at your desk or away from home. These durable enclosures are well-designed, easy to store, and have plenty of drive space. Getting work done while on the go should be a breeze.

You can purchase any of these three units from OWC direct or Amazon using our links above. Be sure to browse the company’s website for further solutions for your computing needs as well. OWC offers more storage, network storage, and more docking stations as well.

MediaTek and NVIDIA Join Forces to Supercharge Edge AI with New Integration at COMPUTEX 2024

0

At COMPUTEX 2024, MediaTek unveiled a collaboration with NVIDIA that promises to enhance the landscape of edge AI. The integration of NVIDIA’s TAO with MediaTek’s NeuroPilot SDK, part of MediaTek’s edge inference silicon roadmap, aims to streamline the developer experience, making it easier to bring advanced AI capabilities to a wide range of IoT applications.

MediaTek, known for powering over two billion connected devices annually, is positioning this move as a way to simplify and accelerate the development of edge AI solutions. The company’s edge silicon portfolio is designed to deliver high performance while maintaining efficiency, integrating advanced multimedia and connectivity technologies. This initiative will benefit various IoT verticals, including smart retail, manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, and smart cities.

The NeuroPilot SDK’s integration with NVIDIA TAO offers developers an easy-to-use interface and performance optimization capabilities. This combination aims to push the boundaries of Vision AI across MediaTek devices, regardless of size. With over 100 ready-to-use pretrained models, NVIDIA TAO facilitates the customization of vision AI solutions, automating the tuning process and reducing both development time and complexity. This means even developers without deep AI expertise can swiftly bring products to market.
