Ankerโ€™s team has done an exceptional job of creating a balance between traditional canned headphones, comfort, and internal magic. This includes a great hinge mechanism that make stowing the Space One Pros very easy. With a few turns, the earpieces fold inward in opposite directions that make the footprint surprisingly small when closed.

The headband and cup cushions are plush with long-term comfort. I did find them a little hot in longer sessions, but they never feel like the materials are becoming a problem. Iโ€™d say the same about the weight. The Soundcore Space One Pro headphones have a premium heft, but not so much so that you feel like youโ€™ve put a bowling bowl over your head.

I have also enjoyed the tactile buttons on each exterior earpiece. The right side includes the ANC profile button and volume controls. The left side houses the power button and a play/pause dedicated input. Overall, the design of the Space One Pro headphones is thoughtful, balanced, and premium construction.

Getting the Soundcore Space One Pros connected to your devices couldn’t be much simpler. If you own an Android device, fast pair is available on the initial power up and prompts you to a wizard to pair in a few taps of the screen. After this enrollment, you’ll then get a notification to sync the Space One Pro headphones to other Android and ChromeOS devices signed in to the same Gmail account. iOS users can also enjoy these great audio bands with just a few clicks through the Bluetooth settings menus.

Sound

All that does matter a bit if the sound of a pair of headphones is lackluster. Thankfully, Soundcore stays true to its legacy and offers a fantastic listening experience. Like really good. If youโ€™d have told me these cans were produced by the legacy titans in the market, like Bose or JBL, Iโ€™d believe you. 

This is specifically true with the noise-cancellation. When fully turned on, I found it to be one of the more immersive playback offerings Iโ€™ve testing in recent memory. You are engulfed in a surround sound level isolation that focuses on the audio being played while cutting out the majority of the outside noise.

Itโ€™s not all or nothing, though. Diving into the settings of the companion Soundcore app, youโ€™ll find an option for Easy Talk. This option allows the Space One Pro ANC system to pick up your voice and lower the cancellation levels to almost zero to allow you to hold a conversation with someone in your surrounding area. It then pipes in the audio of the other participant to keep you active in the discourse without having to fully remove the headphones.

General playback is what Iโ€™d expect from a Soundcore system. The company has prided themselves on having an excellent out-of-the-box balance built by musical experts. This is again present with the Space One Pros. In my opinion, the default Soundcore Signature EQ setting will never need to be changed for most users. The balance of bass, mids, and highs is great as is, but can be adjusted to your preference in the app.

Battery life

Just like with the listening experience, the physical size of over the ear headphones simply allow for more internal hardware for things like battery life. Soundcore estimates the Space One Pro series will last up to 40 hours per charge with ANC activated and around 60 hours without it. 

Iโ€™ve found this to be spot on. Iโ€™ve been average a full week of use with ANC turned on while working in my office around 9 hours a day with a few breaks. I picked up the Space One Pros on Monday and never had to reach for the charging cable once until the weekend.

If I did need to extend this during my work week, being a part of a company that made its name with charging comes in handy. The Soundcore Space One Pro series has a USB-C charging input and includes fast charging with an appropriate power adapter. This combination needs at least a 10 Watt charger and cable but gets you eight hours of playback in just five minutes with an outlet.

It finds a nice balance of all the available EQ levels, and I generally stick with the default Soundcore profile. You can still adjust to your preferences in the companion app, but I donโ€™t tend to bother.

The same is true for calls. I have a few trustworthy folks I know will give me feedback when making calls on a new device. Iโ€™m happy to report that the Soundcore Liberty 4 Pro earbuds performed very well here. Furthermore, I was able to filter out most environmental noise, and the recipient on the other end of the discussion also found that nothing came through as a distraction.

Spatial audio is also onboard with these earbuds. This functions as expected, โ€œmovingโ€ the audio with your body positions and environment. I know some people love this feature, but Iโ€™ve always found that regardless of manufacturer, it sounds tinny and unnatural in this profile mode. This isnโ€™t exclusive to the Soundcores, and includes the understood industry standards of Bose and Apple. 

Case and controls

While the earbuds would a star on their own, the case is where Soundcore has found a true differentiator. Just inside the sliding lid, youโ€™ll immediately find an LED display that gives you information on battery life of each bud, as well as the ANC levels once youโ€™ve connected to your paired device.

That would be sweet enough, but thereโ€™s a familiar divot that mimics the one on the earbudโ€™s stem, on the front of the case. This capacitive area allows you to adjust the ANC profile level on the fly while using your earbuds. Thereโ€™s even an option in the Soundcore companion app to act as a shutter button while taking a camera shot.

I do have one major knock on the case. The glossy finish of our Light Blue model shows everything. Dirt, fingerprints, and scratches are prevalent after a few days of use. They do this to lend to a slight transparency to see the LED display, but itโ€™s not a great look. From the renders, the other colors have a similar finish as well. 

Iโ€™m also impressed with the earbud controls. That small divot we mentioned in the design section is responsive and consistent for play/pause with a click. You can also adjust the volume with a light press and sliding motion. These type of controls can be finicky, but Ankerโ€™s engineering team pulled it off here with the Soundcore Liberty 4 Pros.

Battery life

This is a strong aspect of anything designed by Anker and the Liberty 4 Pro earbuds donโ€™t disappoint. The buds will provide you ten hours of endurance with each use, with the case providing several recharges for a total of around 40 hours. Iโ€™ve found both estimates to be accurate with my usage.

When you do need to top off the tanks, you have USB-C charging and Qi wireless charging. Anker states the Liberty 4 Pros have a โ€œ5cโ€ battery capable of four hours of playback by just five minutes in the case with quick charge wired charging. Wireless charging takes about an 3.5 hours to recharge everything. I’ve had zero issues charging using either protocol, but with ten hours of battery life you won’t need to charge often.

Next, tap โ€œBuild Numberโ€ multiple times until you get a message that says you are a developer. Once activated, you can use USB Debugging. This allows you to manage the connection between your phone and computer, and control animations.

Check out the Mock Location feature. You can use this to work with apps that have location restrictions or test apps with GPS.

Screen Pinning For Privacy And security

Ever been nervous to hand your phone over to someone, because you didnโ€™t want them looking at your photos and apps? Screen pinning is a security feature that lets  you lock your phone to a specific app. This way, the person using your phone canโ€™t get into anything else without a pin.

Smart Lock

This one isnโ€™t so secret or hidden. Still, people forget about this, and end up having to constantly unlock their phone. Go into settings and turn on on-body detection so you donโ€™t have to worry about entering a pin every time you ignore your phone for a minute or two.

One-Handed Mode

Try one-handed mode if your device has a larger screen. When you turn this feature on, the content on your screen is shifted down or to one side. This allows you to reach all of your icons without using two hands. Just go to settings>system>gestures>one-handed mode. Then, swipe down on the navigation bar.

Nearby Share

Jealous of iPhone users and their access to AirDrop? Nearby Share is Androidโ€™s answer to this. Just turn it on and make file sharing with other Android devices a snap. It even works on Chromebooks. Just go into settings>Google>Device Connections> Nearby Share. Use it to send files, links, photos, and more to people near you without having to use any third-party apps. If youโ€™re looking for a partner this could be a way to share photos and other key information about one another.

Built-In Screen Recording

Your Android phone may have a built-in screen recorder. This means you donโ€™t need to install any apps to do this for you. Check the Quick Settings Menu. If you have it, you will be able to record tutorials, troubleshoot problems, and capture screen content.

Split-Screen And Pop-Up View

Use the Split-Screen or Pop-Up view modes in Android to make multi-tasking a bit easier. This allows you to use two apps side by side. We love this for comparing things or doing research. You can activate this by opening the app switcher, tapping on the icon and selecting split screen. Meanwhile, the Pop-up view is great for keeping a small window open while you can interact with other apps at the same time.

Simplisafe Outdoor Camera Series 2 with Active Guard Review

Simplisafe has long set a high bar for do-it-yourself security systems. The company was one of the first to enter this market and continues to set trends ahead of its competitors. Last year, Simplisafe announced Active Guard 24/7 live protection with a new indoor camera. Now, it’s back with an Outdoor Camera Series 2 thatโ€™s geared towards the same โ€œalways onโ€ solution.

Design

The latest Outdoor Camera from Simplisafe isnโ€™t far removed from the previous models. Itโ€™s an orb casing with a flat front housing the lens and camera arrays. The one main addition is the mentioned sensor area. 

This new array is much larger than the first gen edition and protrudes from the bottom of the camera. It also houses a much more advanced and beefier microphone and speaker system. Thereโ€™s even a 90 decibel alarm built directly into the setup. This attributes to the Active Guard features weโ€™ll cover later.

The Simplisafe Outdoor Camera has full HD capabilities for a crisp visual every time. Thereโ€™s also night vision for after the sun sets to make sure you still have the capture you need in an emergency. There isnโ€™t much from a recording aspect missing here.

Lastly, the new Outdoor Camera Series 2 has both battery and wired power options. The battery pack and twist off design of the compartment are backwards compatible with the first generation of Simplisafe outdoor cams. The new wired power is a Micro-USB cable with a 30-foot reach and powered by a USB-A adapter.

Setup

If youโ€™ve onboarded any other Simplisafe device, the 2024 Outdoor Camera will be a breeze. If you havenโ€™t, itโ€™s also going to take no time at all. Once you have scoped out the spot on your home the camera will be located, you need to power things up. First, fully charge the battery backup. Then, find a decently close power outlet.

Once thatโ€™s complete, download or open the Simplisafe app. Choose the camera section and โ€œadd new cameraโ€ to find the new Outdoor Camera in the menu. From here, the application will walk you through a well-designed wizard with step-by-step instructions to add to your security system. 

Simplisafe has one of the most well-rounded onboarding processes in tech, and Iโ€™d challenge anyone to take it on with little anxiety. My biggest issue with the new addition of the Outdoor Camera was the new hard lined power. This is required to take advantage of the Active Guard protection plan. 

My preferred location was outside my homeโ€™s garage, with no exterior outlets. I was able to make the situation work, but it took some extra tools and ingenuity, besides the includes cable and 3M mounting clips. I had to essentially run it under the trim on one side to the garage door and then the entire length of one wall to meet the first outlet available. Many homes will have an outlet more readily situated on the exterior but worth considering.

Itโ€™s also worth circling back to the battery backup and wired power. To be completely clear, the included power cable for always on power is optional and only required if you plan to activate the 24/7 Active Guard plan. Otherwise, it works just like the first generation Outdoor Camera, with just the removable battery being recharged every few months. The new camera will eventually replace the previous option and be the only Outdoor model for sale.

Camera

The new Simplisafe Outdoor camera has been fantastic in daily use. After getting it set up and powered, Iโ€™ve had zero issues. The camera has a crisp visual and great field of view when you open the app to see whatโ€™s going on.

The new hardware also shines through. I have found the motion detection has been much more sensitive and accurate to notify me of possible issues. The same is true for the mic and speaker. The previous gen was one of the best in the lineup already, and Iโ€™ve found both to be improved on the 2024 edition.

Just like the other cameras, you have a few items you can tweak in the app preferences. You can widen or restrict the area that triggers a motion alert, for instance. You can also toggle notification completely off if you like. While some of this would be counterproductive, Simplisafe gives you options and the application is very intuitive to use.

Active Guard protection

You canโ€™t do this review without the new protection plan that accompanies the Outdoor Camera Series 2 launch. Active Guard is a revolutionary new feature set of the Simplisafe core protection. The new philosophy is one of proactive protection for your family and belongings that literally no other company is offering.

With Active Guard, Simplisafe representatives will be able to interact with perceived motion on the Outdoor Camera and immediately evaluate the threat level. This gives them the ability to vocally engage a possible intruder, possibly deter the situation completely, or call the authorities into action.

Itโ€™s an innovative way to take home security on the offensive, but itโ€™s not all the wild wild west. Safeguards are in place to protect you from false alarms and secure your privacy. The monitoring center will only have access to video if your Simplisafe system is in either Home or Away mode AND motion trips the camera. Once motion is no longer detected, or an active alarm is reconciled, your feed can not be accessed remotely.

You can also proactively make sure the monitoring service associates donโ€™t perceive you or family as a threat. You can upload photos of house members to have them tagged in the new Familiar Faces section of the Simplisafe app. Even if you donโ€™t upload them, you can start tagging them in motion clips to help the service no common visitors.

Another great thing Simplisafe has considered it that some users may not want Active Guard all the time. To accommodate, the company has created a tiered subscription that includes two different levels for the new Active Guard protection. The new Pro level gets you just overnight protection from the 24/7 agent reviews, while Pro Plus is all day every day. The pricing is $50 and $80 respectively, and you can always stick with the traditional Core level without Active Guard for must $32 per month.
