0

For those who aren’t aware, there’s a pretty big tech conference going on over in Berlin. IFA 2015 has kicked off, and news has been pouring out ever since. This time around, ASUS has announced pricing and availability for the ZenWatch 2.

ASUS originally showed off the ZenWatch 2 back in June at the Computex tech exhibition in Asia. However, ASUS was pretty mum about the specs on the new iteration, however, with today’s announcement, we now get some more information.

The ZenWatch 2 will have two size variants, a 49mm and 43 mm size with pricing of €149 (around $170) and €169 (around $190), respectively. In addition, the 49mm ZenWatch 2 will be compatible with most standard 22mm straps, while the 43mm version will be compatible with 18mm straps.

The 49mm ZenWatch 2 will sport a 1.6-inch display, while the 43mm variant will sport a 1.45 inch display. Other than the difference in price and screen size, what’s under the hood will be exactly the same.

  • 320×320 AMOLED Display
  • Wi-Fi Support
  • Snapdragon 400 processor
  • 400mAh Battery for 49mm variant
  • 300mAh Battery for 43mm variant

Motorola’s next phone, the Moto X Force leaks on Twitter

1

We’re starting to see steady leaks come out of the Motorola camp recently. First it was the Moto 360, which has been leaked numerous times over the past few months. Then it was the new Moto X line followed by the Moto 360 Sport. Now we’re getting another look at the Moto X Force. The Force was originally leaked with it’s code name, “Bounce”. In that leak we learned that the Force will feature a 5.43″ QHD display, Snapdragon 810 MSM8994 SoC, 3 GB of RAM, 21 MP main camera and 5 MP front facing camera with a huge 3,760  mAh battery, shatterproof screen and either 32 or 64 GB of storage. Sounds like a monster.

There’s no telling about availability yet. Some had speculated this will be a Verizon exclusive but it appears that a re-branded Moto X Play will end up being named the Droid Maxx 2 here in the states.

We’re definitely seeing a shift from the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) approach that Motorola had adopted around the time they were acquired by Google. This year alone we’re going to see a new version of the Moto E, two versions of the Moto G (1 gb/8 gb and 2 gb/16 gb, four versions of the Moto X (Pure, Play, Style, and Force if this leak is accurate) and 3 versions of the Moto 360. It’s bold to step away from the strategy that had Motorola selling so many phones. This may pollute their product lines producing diminishing results or drive them to record sales. We’ll have to wait and see.

But this phone may be worth the money alone so I can tell my friends I called them using The Force.

Do you think there is enough different between the Moto phones to make a difference? Let us know in the comments how you think Motorola’s new strategy under Lenovo will shake out.

Details emerge about LG’s latest smartwatch

0

Leaks have been flying this past week faster than almost any time in recent memory. We probably have IFA 2015 to thank for that and today we’re talking about the upcoming smartwatch from LG. LG has had several very popular smartwatches since Android Wear was released including the G Watch, the first Android Wear smartwatch, The G Watch R, The Urbane and the truly ridiculous Urbane Luxe which will run you over a grand.

LG_G_Watch

Today we’re talking about an unnamed new smartwatch that looks to be announced later in September. AndroidPolice has received information from two sources divulging the details on the latest smartwatch from the South Korean tech giant. According to their sources, AP claims that we’ll be seeing another circular screen but we don’t know how it relates in dimension to the G Watch R and Urbane.

Additionally it seems we’ll be seeing two buttons appear on either side of the crown. There’s no telling what these buttons will do as of now but LG must have something up their sleeve to differentiate it from the likes of the Moto 360. The body shown off to AP appears to be a brushed and polished metallic materials. There will be a substantial metal bezel around the screen but the watch should be more angular and sharp, making it appear more futuristic and sporty.

The strap doesn’t appear to have changed styles from the Urbane or G Watch R. It will be featuring a clasp and hole system we normally see and feature silicone or rubber material. No other details have been let loose on color, other types of bands, or other body styles.

Personally, these reports excite me. The Moto 360 was the first Android Wear watch that didn’t feel like a toy or a beta version of a real device. Android Wear has been evolving and adding functionality and looks like it’s finally maturing from a hobbyists project into a full fledged consumer product.

New leak shows off case for Huawei Nexus 6 – Confirms camera bump

2

As we reported a few weeks ago, Steve Hemmerstoffer, the man behind @OnLeaks, released a video reportedly showing the Huawei Nexus 6.

Yesterday, he leaked images of a generic case for the Huawei Nexus 6.

The images of the case seem to confirm the existence of the camera bump and fingerprint reader. Other reported specs are a 5.7″ screen and a Type-C USB connector. It would also seem that the phone will feature a metal construction.

Take at look at these images from one of our recently published articles.

Needless to say. Nothing is official until it’s official. There are also rumors kicking around that it may have a 5.5″ screen and that Huawei has more than one prototype out there. What do you think? Do you like the design? Are you planning on picking one up? Let us know in the comments.

Nest releases 3rd generation Learning Thermostat with slimmer profile and hi-res display

0

Nest Labs, Inc. , a pioneer in home automation, has just released the third generation Nest Learning Thermostat. The new unit comes with a slimmer profile, a high-resolution display that is 40 percent larger than the last, and it also comes with an updated user interface to make it easier to read temperatures, alerts and messages.

The Nest Learning Thermostat has been proven by third-party researchers to save people, on average, about 10 to 12 percent on their heating bills and about 15 percent on their cooling bills – Maxime Vernon, head of hardware product marketing.

That’s quite an accomplishment and proves that the investment in the Nest Learning Thermostat can pay for itself in a matter of time, depending on your monthly cost for electricity. The next generation Nest will be available at 7,000 retail locations and from 25,000 Nest Pro Installers. It will also be available through partners like Southern Company, Direct Energy, SunEdison, amongst many others who will provide the Nest Learning Thermostat at a discount or no cost.

Here is a list of new features in the 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat:

Sleek new design – The Nest Thermostat has a 40 percent larger, brighter, high-resolution screen and new graphics so you can see it easier from far away. The crisp display has 229 pixels per inch (PPI), 25 percent more than the 2nd generation Nest Thermostat. The 3rd generation Nest Thermostat also has a slightly thinner profile to be more flush against the wall.

Farsight – Previously, you had to be pretty close – about 3 feet (1 meter) away – to get the Nest Thermostat to wake up and turn on the display. Farsight takes advantage of the new highresolution screen so that you can see useful information on the Nest Thermostat from across the room. You can set the thermostat to display target temperature, an analog clock or digital clock, or turn Farsight off.

Furnace Heads-Up – Most heating and forced air furnaces have an automatic shutoff to avoid overheating. The Nest Thermostat will look for shutoff patterns that indicate there’s a persistent problem and if so, you’ll get a Heads-Up message in the Nest app and on the thermostat screen twice per year, and you’ll also get a notice in your monthly Home Report. (Furnace Heads-Up will be available for 1st and 2nd generation customers later this year.)

slide3-99ebeb9d54d6266df454cc21f1bf4970

And, like the 1st and 2nd generation, the 3rd generation Nest Thermostat will also include the following integrations with Nest Protect and Nest Cam.

• When Nest Protect sounds a Heads-Up or Emergency Alarm for smoke or carbon monoxide (CO), in addition to a Nest app notification you’ll see a message on the Nest Thermostat display to help you know what’s going on. The Nest Thermostat can automatically shut off fossil fuel based heating systems, which is the leading cause of CO leaks in the home, in case that is the source.

• Nest Protect enhances the Nest Thermostat’s Auto-Away feature by improving Nest’s knowledge of when you’re home or away.

• You can set your Nest Cam to begin automatically recording when you switch your Nest Thermostat into Home or Away mode.

The 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat can be purchased today for $249 through Nest.com, Amazon.com, and Bestbuy.com. It will also be available for purchase to Best Buy stores, Google Store, The Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Target and Verizon Wireless soon. Now that the 3rd generation has been released, you can save $50 dollars on the 2nd generation Nest Learning Thermostat for a price of $199 while supplies last.

If you have a Nest, let us know how you like it in the comments section below.

OnePlus begins updating Oxygen OS to 2.0.2

0

OnePlus 2 owners will see the beginning of a phased rollout for the newest update to Oxygen OS 2. Owners of the “2015 flagship killer” have seen several updates to their phones recently which brought improvements to fingerprint recognition accuracy, stability improvements for the front facing camera and UI improvements in the camera software. It also fixed a bug that would unexpectedly mute the phone.

oxygen_Forum_official

In their forum post, OnePlus is sure to point out that they’re listening to their customers complaints on forums and on social media. Oxygen OS, the rather spartan OS has been criticized for its lack of customization, options and features in comparison to the more robust CyanogenMod 12.1 that can’t yet be flashed on to the phone.

The OnePlus One originally launched with CyanogenMod 11S on board but after a rocky relationship, OnePlus began to develop their own AOSP based ROM and dumped Cyanogen for Oxygen OS. Oxygen OS is available to flash on the original flagship killer but comes standard on the OnePlus 2.

OnePlus has promised a more significant update to Oxygen OS in mid-September which will bump the OS up to 2.1. Due to OnePlus’ history with software updates we’re going to put this one in the we’ll believe it when we see it category.

Amazon Video is first online subscription streaming video service to offer offline playback

0

amazon_prime_download

The battle that is subscription-based online video streaming gets more interesting today as Amazon Video announces an industry first. Available as part of recently updated service and mobile apps, Amazon will now let users download Prime Videos to be played back offline.

Indeed, this is a major move as players like Hulu and Netflix don’t yet offer the capability. Even stuff like that from Google Play Movies and TV require individual purchases or rental. Nobody, today, offers a subscription service for shows and movies that also lets you work offline.

[blockquote author=””]There’s no doubt that the way people watch entertainment is changing—anytime, anywhere viewing is important and we are excited to provide our Prime members with offline viewing capabilities on iOS and Android platforms starting today.[/blockquote]

If you’re an Amazon Prime subscriber (you really should be) and want to check out the Prime Video downloads, be sure to update your iOS app or install the standalone video app for Android. Not an Amazon Prime subscriber? Try the service out for 30 days for free!

HTC teases new flagship release date in social media post

0

HTC has taken to the Chinese version of Twitter to start teasing their newest flagship. Dubbed the MengYao, the newest phone from the struggling Taiwanese tech giant hopes to find some success after the failure of the HTC One M9.

htc-a9

There have been leaks recently of an “HTC Aero” pointing to a second flagship line much like Samsung and LG have been putting out lately with releases early in Spring and in Fall. We don’t know much right now except that HTC is really pumping up the “handsome” angle with this device. The code name for the phone, MengYao literally translates to Handsome Gentleman. The ad on Weibo simply states “September 6, MengYao, Stay Tuned.”

Previously leaks have pointed to a device named the HTC Aero releasing late this year packing a MediaTek Helio X20 SoC, 4 GB of Ram and a an all metal build. We hope that HTC has learned the sins of the HTC One line and given this a unique but upgradeable design that can evolve over time unlike the One which has become stagnate. The failure of the One, among other things, have caused a massive collapse in the value of the company which at one point was trading less than cash on hand, deeming the company basically worthless.

If released in the US, it will become one of the first major flagships to use a MediaTek chip over rivals Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and Samsung’s Exynos chips.
