inStream SeptimusB Premium 7-port charging station review

1

51Q0jEFrPBL._SL1392_Many of us have multiple devices, and they all likely need to be charged at some point. Whether we have tablets, smartphones, smart watches, other wearables, or Bluetooth headphones, we all plug in at the end of a long day. But with so many devices, it has become increasingly difficult to plug them all in at once, especially with those notoriously bulky AC adapters taking up your outlets. Enter the inStream SeptimusB charging station, a USB charging hub with 7 ports and a small profile. I put the SeptimusB to the test, and this is what I found.

Design

20150909_121909Given that it’s a USB charging hub, there isn’t much to talk about as far as design goes. We’re looking at a square-shaped brick that sports 7 USB 2.0 ports on the front, an on/off switch and the power port around the back, and virtually nothing on either side other than a few aesthetic lines and a logo. Right above the ports on the front sits a small green LED light that indicates the hub has power and is ready to charge. The SeptimusB is made of a rigid plastic, and is incredibly light. With that being said, I was not worried about it breaking or being damaged. It is built to be sturdy, without leaving too much of a footprint in your home or office (the device as a whole measures only 4 x 1 x 3.5 inches). The SeptimusB can be purchased in either black or white, both of which actually look very nice.

Included in the box is the AC power cord, a Lightning cable, and a microUSB cable. Both of these extra cables are fairly short at less than a foot long, but it’s nice that inStream threw in a few extras with the charging hub.

Performance

20150909_121934The great thing about this  particular product is that it literally has one job, and it does that job very well. It doesn’t have to look flashy or have a ton of extra features. Its job is to charge devices as quickly and efficiently as possible, and it definitely hits the mark where that is concerned. The SeptimusB has 7 USB ports, but inStream went above and beyond by giving fast-charging power to each port. The hub is able to manage multiple devices plugged in at once, and allocate power flow so that every device is getting the maximum charging speed. InStream boasts a maximum of 3A on each port, which is more than most smartphones or tablets require even for fast charging.

In my few weeks of using the SeptimusB every night, I found this to be fairly accurate. Charging three smartwatches, two smartphones, and a set of Bluetooth headphones was no problem, and my Galaxy S6 even registered it as a fast charger with five other devices plugged into the same hub. InStream did very well with the technical side of this charging station. If fast charging is what gets you through the day, this would definitely be a good option for charging multiple devices at full speed.

There’s an added bonus in the fact that the SeptimusB is fully circuit protected, so your devices will be safe in the event of a power surge. Although if you’re like me, you’ll have it plugged into a surge protector just to be safe.  As a final point for performance, I did not notice the SeptimusB getting warm or making any noise whatsoever, which should be a relief for users worried about overheating or nuisance sounds.

Conclusion

20150909_121916The inStream SeptimusB charging station does exactly what it is supposed to do. It looks fairly normal and doesn’t stand out, and it doesn’t take up much space. It charges devices quickly and doesn’t rob users of the output they need to charge all their devices at once.

At the time of writing this review, the only real downside to the SeptimusB was the $34.95 price tag, which put it in the higher price range for a USB hub. Luckily, our friends over at inStream have now slashed the price to $27.95, and they’re offering a discount coupon code, so you can actually pick up a SeptimusB for just $19.95! If you want to take advantage of this deal, just head over to the SeptimusB Amazon page, select the color you’d like, and apply the coupon code SEPTBREV to get over 40% off the original price. It is worth noting that the deal only lasts until September 30th, so time is limited!

Pokémon GO brings Pokémon to the real world

0

When Nintendo announced that they would be releasing 5 mobile games by 2017, they created quite a bit of buzz. After all, Nintendo has always been a closed eco-system. Perhaps after the Wii U suffered lackluster sales, Nintendo has decided that a more multifaceted approach is best.

So today, Nintendo in conjunction with Niantic announced that Pokémon GO would be released sometime next year. If Niantic sounds familiar, it’s because they are the developer spun off from Google that is responsible for the popular real-world augmented reality game Ingress.

Pokémon GO seeks to combine Niantic’s augmented reality with Pokémon. Take a look at the trailer.

The game will allow Pokémon trainers to explore real-world locations to catch, trade, and battle with each other in their search for Pokémon. There will also be a separate Bluetooth device for their smartphone called Pokémon GO Plus, developed and manufactured by Nintendo, alerting Pokémon trainers to nearby events (such as Pokémon in the vicinity) with flashes and vibrations, and the ability to catch them with the press of a button.

Pokemon_GO_Plus_wo_strap Pokemon_GO_Plus_w_strap

“Our challenge was to develop a great game for smart phone devices that expressed the core values of Pokémon,” said Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company. “Pokémon GO is the answer to that challenge.”

“Pokémon GO is a wonderful combination of Niantic’s real world gaming platform and one of the most beloved franchises in popular culture,” said John Hanke, founder and CEO of Niantic, Inc. “Our partnership with The Pokémon Company and Nintendo is an exciting step forward in real-world gaming and using technology to help players discover the world and people around them.”

Pokémon GO will be a free download on Google Play in 2016 with available in-app purchases.

This game sounds really interesting to me. I had a hard time getting into Ingress because I didn’t really have time to spend away from home capturing spots. I have 3 children. However, this looks like a game that I can take the kids with me to play.

What do you think? Will you be downloading Pokémon GO next year? Let us know in the comments below.

EasyAcc 2nd. Gen Brilliant Power Bank (review)

With a 4.5 star rating on Amazon.com from almost 4k reviewers, I didn’t have much doubt that the EasyAcc 2nd generation power bank would let me down when I had the opportunity to review it. I love to review these portable power banks. There are still many people who don’t know what they are and once they find out about them, they are life savers. I have many friends and family who are constantly running low on battery and wait to get home to charge their devices. They will stop using their phones while they are out just because they need to save that 5% remaining power for an emergency.

20150909_230020

In my arsenal of techie stuff, I own at least 5 power banks at any given time. Us writers usually have a lot of stuff, and our friends and family are always oohing and ahhing at our stuff so we end up giving it to them at some point. But this power bank from EasyAcc is going to stay in my arsenal and here is why.

Design and Usage

A few years ago, when phones had much smaller batteries, portable chargers didn’t need to be excessively large. I remember my first power bank being very small by today’s standards. It was made by Mophie and easily fit in my pocket. Today, with phones like my Samsung Galaxy Note Edge and Galaxy Note5, 3000mAh is what I am used to which means I need a decent sized backup battery if I want more than one charge.

The EasyAcc battery pack is not much larger than my Amazon Fire phone, which makes this a pretty small package at 10000mAh. It makes for easy carrying when I don’t have my backpack with me and just need to throw it in my back pocket.

20150909_230102

The battery has a micro USB on the side of it, with a flashlight in the front, flanked by two USB charging ports. It definitely has a solid construction and is coated with a matte plastic cover which doesn’t attract fingerprints. I simply love the design. In order to turn on the flashlight, all you have to do is click the power button twice and it will provide about as much light as the flash on your smartphone.

20150909_230125

The EasyAcc 2nd generation Brilliant 10000mAh bank fits just in the right spot where I can charge my phone three times on one battery charge, or I can charge my Note Edge and Note5 at the same time. The other cool factor of this battery is that you can charge this battery while also charging a phone connected to it at the same time. Most other batteries usually can only do one at a time. This is great if you need to charge your battery, while on a trip, and your phone at the same time. It eliminates the need to have a second wall charger on yourself, keeping traveling as light as possible.

10000mAh is not too big and is not too small. Just like the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, this battery is just right.

I recently brought the EasyAcc battery pack with me on a 3 day camping trip. By no means was I on my phone much during the trip, but with a weak signal, my battery on my Note5 drained rather quickly. This battery pack provided me enough power to make it through 2 nights and 3 days without needing to hop in my truck for a recharge.

The version I tested was the orange and black model, but there are also 5 other colors available through Amazon.com.

Specs

  • Output 5V/2.4A(max)
  • Input DC 5V/2A

Summary

For less than 20 dollars, you can get the EasyAcc 10000mAh 2nd generation battery pack on Amazon.com. You really can’t go wrong with this battery pack – with a superb price, excellent build, and incredible specs, the EasyAcc Brilliant battery pack is perfect. It has little features like a built-in flashlight and big features like the ability to smart charge your devices quickly making it a well rounded device.

Battery packs are typically a dime a dozen, but there are instances like this where it is easy to recommend to anyone. This battery pack is mine and will stay mine – if any of my friends and family ask for my EasyAcc battery pack I will simply point them to Amazon.com where they can order their own.

CHOETECH Circle Qi wireless charger (review)

CHOETECH seriously makes quality accessories for your mobile devices. They recently sent me the Circle Qi wireless charger to review, in addition to the quick charger for my car, and due to my experiences with their products. I even spent my own money buying more of their products for my personal use like their home quick charger. This happened to work out perfectly for me, as I have an AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note5 to review which has wireless charging built into the device.

Let’s get into the review.

Design and Usage

Out of the box, the CHOETECH Circle Qi wireless charger feels like every other product they make – premium. The disk is compact but not so compact that it is a pain to find the right spot to charge your device. It is about as wide as the Note5 which makes for easy placement, and it’s not so big that it takes up an unnecessary amount of space on my desk.

The other nice touches CHOETECH put into this charger are silicon rings around the bottom and top of the charger. The rubber provides grip for the phone and the desk, keeping this unit in one place, and prevents your phone from sliding off the top. It’s a simple feature that pays huge dividends when it comes to ease of placement. The rubber grips onto the phone making it super easy to put the phone down in the right spot.

The other nice touch that they built into this charger was a blue light that lights up to show your device is charging.

I’ve owned several other wireless chargers and ended up putting them in a closet and disconnecting them, because their indicators lights were so bright that they kept me awake at night. CHOETECH knew this was a concern and built in an ambient light sensor, so when I turned off my lights so did the charger’s light. It’s a nifty feature that was well thought out and prevents me from putting electrical tape over the light.

Overall, I couldn’t have been happier with this wireless charger.

Specs

  • Input – 5V/2A
  • Output – 5V/1A
  • Charging distance – 0-5mm
  • Dimensions – 3.3×3.3x.7in
  • Weight – 64g
  • Conversion – >70%
  • Qi compliant
  • Lighting sensor
  • 18 month warranty

Summary

Not all products are built equally. I’ve owned many wireless chargers before but never found one that I loved. I actually really enjoyed testing this review unit and purchased another for my office(lab). As much as I love having the ability to swap batteries on my phones, I enjoy not having to plug my phone in to charge it almost as much. CHOETECH converted me into a wireless charger type of user. The CHOETECH Circle Qi wireless charger is only $19.99 on Amazon.com and comes with a micro USB cable. It’s a much cheaper alternative to Samsung’s official wireless charger which retails for $49.99.

CHOETECH builds some of the most high quality accessories you can get your hands on and I trust all of my devices with their products.

This device is compatible with the Galaxy S6/S6 edge/S6 edge+/Note5/Nexus 4,5,6 and all other Qi enabled devices.

Hangouts updated to get ready for Android Marshmallow release

0

Hangouts_IconIn the last few weeks we have seen more and more evidence of Google laying the ground-work for the upcoming release of Android Marshmallow. In the lead up to their sweetest release ever, Hangouts has been updated from v4.0 to v4.2 – though there is no real evidence for anything new except for some stuff found in the code by Android Police.

They seem to indicate that the new version is laying groundwork for the new control on permissions that will come with Android 6.0. Here is the code they isolate –

[alert color=”yellow”]

<string name=”contacts_permission_allow_text”>Allow</string>

<string name=”contacts_permission_banner_text”>Make it easy to find your friends</string>

<string name=”contacts_permission_message_text”>Allow Hangouts to access your contacts</string>

<string name=”contacts_permission_no_thanks_text”>No, thanks</string>

<string name=”contacts_rationale_explanation”>To continue, give Hangouts access to your contacts.</string>

<string name=”contacts_rationale_next”>Next</string>

<string name=”contacts_rationale_title”>Find your friends</string>

<string name=”hangout_mic_permission_required”>Joining a call requires permission to use your microphone.</string>

<string name=”hangout_permission_not_granted”>Unlock your device and give Hangouts permission to use your microphone and camera.</string>

[/alert]

Otherwise, there is nothing else indicative of an update. Guess it just means we’re one step closer to Android Marshmallow!

However, if you are absolutely dying for anything new – you can grab the apk from APKMirror here.

Let us know if you do find something in this update that’s new!

Blu debuts Vivo Air LTE as America’s thinnest 4G LTE smartphone

[df-subtitle]At a mere 5.1mm thick, the unlocked phone works with AT&T and T-Mobile[/df-subtitle]

Blu today announced a follow-up to its Vivo Air smartphone launched earlier in the year. Called the Vivo Air LTE, the unlocked smartphone is aluminum and features a profile that’s only 5.1mm thick. At this thickness, the phone becomes the thinnest 4G LTE handset sold in the US.

Running Android 5.0 Lollipop, the Vivo Air LTE features a 4.8-inch display at 720 pixel resolution; Gorilla Glass 2 protects the screen. Internally, the smartphone is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage.

As far as cameras go, there’s an 8-megapixel sensor on the rear, capable of 1080p HD video recording. Around front, you’ll find a 5-megapixel sensor.

Given that the Vivo Air LTE is unlocked, it’s compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile as well as their respective prepaid service providers (Cricket and MetroPCS). You can order one of these from Amazon for $200 immediately with shipments expected on September 22.

Verizon to offer free mobile TV for everyone through its Go90 app

0

Big Red is set to enter into the mobile television market this week with their new Go90 app. They are aiming their focus right at the Millenials who do much of their video watching on their mobile devices while spurning traditional TV methods like watching a TV set at home on the couch. Go90’s name refers to turning your phone 90 degrees into landscape mode, where not only Verizon customers can watch free TV, but everyone will have free access regardless of which wireless provider you pay for service.

Where Go90 differentiates itself from other competing apps from AT&T, Comcast and Dish is that it is focusing on the mobile market as its primary audience versus traditional cable plans with bonus mobile content. According to multiple sources, the TV lineup should include prime TV shows, original internet shows, and live TV which includes sports programming.

Go90 will be free, which should attract many viewers, as almost all other TV services cost money. Ad-supported content will fund Go90 just like traditional free TV. Maybe Verizon will use this free TV app as a way to push their own Ads to Millennials without going through the traditional methods.

You can register at Go90 and they will be in touch with you when the app goes live.

Verizon will begin testing its 5G network in 2016

0

[df-subtitle]Data speeds could be 50 times faster than today’s averages[/df-subtitle]

internet_everything_verizon

Barely six years after launching its 4G LTE network, Verizon plans to start field-testing its next-generation high speed data service. Dubbed, for lack of a better term, 5G, it could deliver speeds of 30-50 times faster than what you’ll find today.

To put things into perspective, a movie download from Google Play might take around six minutes on a good connection today. On 5G, however, it could be delivered in a matter of seconds.

[blockquote author=””]We feel a tremendous sense of urgency to push forward on 5G and mobilize the ecosystem by collaborating with industry leaders and developers to usher in a new generation of innovation.[/blockquote]

This is not to suggest that 5G will only be used for movies, music, and TV; the medical field could benefit from a more real-time interaction for relay surgeries. Also, consider how much more efficient it would be to connect and interact with your smart devices. Tapping a button on your phone to turn off lights at home should be instantaneous, right?

Verizon is currently sandbox testing the new network in at least two locations: Waltham, Massachusetts, and San Francisco. Looking ahead to 2016, Big Red plans to expand things with help from partners such as Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm and Samsung.

Up until now, the general consensus was that 5G networks might still be another five years away, perhaps even longer. Should Verizon pull this off quickly it could put pressure on the other carriers. Nobody wants to be using yesterday’s technology.

TextSecure: a privacy-oriented, text messaging client (App review)

There is a vast selection of text messengers on Google Play. However, not all of them are as privacy-oriented as the one for today’s review. TextSecure is able to encrypt messages, so long as each person involved in the conversation uses the client.

For those of you who already have a text messenger, switching to another one could be a tall order, I understand. That’s especially true when you and the other person need to use TextSecure in order to get the full benefits. For now, let’s examine the app and see if it is worth your consideration.

Setup

Setup is quick and simple. Head over to Google Play and download and install the app.

When you open TextSecure, it will ask for you for your phone number, so that it can be registered for an identity key. This will send an SMS to your device for confirmation.

Functions and Features

At first glance, TextSecure behaves like other text messengers.

You can start a new conversation by clicking the icon at the bottom right.TextSecure's main screen

Speaking of conversations, you’ll easily know that your connection to another person is encrypted when a lock icon appears underneath both your messages.

A conversation thread in TextSecure

Click the lock at the top right in order to view everyone’s identity keys or to end the secure session. The lock indicates you are messaging someone who is using the app, by the way.

From the main screen, use the search button at the top right to look up existing conversations of your contacts.

Located next to this is a menu icon. Within it, you can create a group chat, mark all conversations as read, import and export conversations, view your identity key, and go to settings.

There are settings for SMS and MMS, notifications, privacy, appearance, deleting old messages, and advanced settings.

TextSecure's settings window

Most of these are quite standard, like WiFi calling compatibility mode, a selection of visual and auditory notifications, and a light and a dark theme.

One of the most noteworthy features of TextSecure is the privacy settings.

You can create a password for messages, which can be changed at anytime. Set a time interval if you don’t want to enter in your password each time you bring the app to the foreground.

The privacy settings in TextSecure

Interestingly, screenshots can be blocked in the app, as well.

Lastly, under advanced, you will find an option called “TextSecure messages.” Enabling this option allows for free private messaging to TextSecure and Signal (the iOS counterpart) users.

What we liked

  • Simple, modern design
  • The ability to change the accent color for contacts
  • Using a passphrase to lock the app
  • Optional, secure text sessions for TextSecure users
  • Optional, private (group) IMs for TextSecure users
  • Choice between a light theme and a dark theme

What we don’t like

  • Nothing

Depending on what you want from a text messenger, TextSecure may not be the best. By that, I mean it does not have the most extensive customization, for example. You won’t be able to make an image the background of a thread or change the fonts of each individual thread. Although you can change the accent color of each conversation, I’d consider other options should you want customization.

On the other hand, TextSecure caters to a privacy-oriented niche, one which it does really well. Users who prefer this may also like the fact that it is open source. Sure, you and your friends and family will need to switch in order take advantage of its features, and for a lot of people, that’s not worth it. However, if you want an option to keep your texts encrypted, TextSecure is one of a few, great options at the moment.
