Motorola’s accessory customisation app, Motorola Connect, is bringing some cool new features along with a recent update.

You’ll see a big new UI that brings the design in line with other Motorola apps and you’ll see new material design aspects to see connected devices and also add new pairings.

Upon tapping a device, you’ll see the familiar layout of watch location, and the gallery of watchfaces.

LG sends out invites for October 1st event

0

LG has started sending out invites for an event on October 1st. The invite features a film reel and a slate board asking you to save the date for October 1st in New York. Generally, companies try to tie in some sort of element from their presentation into invite, but we haven’t seen any leaks having to do with movies.

lg-event-invite

We have, however, seen a lot of leaks for a new flagship phone from LG. Whether it’s called the LG G4 Note or the LG G4 Pro is yet to be seen, but we did catch a trademark filing for the G4 Note earlier this month.

There haven’t been a ton of hardware leaks on the G4 Note, but we might be seeing a very similar phone to the G4 that was released earlier this year. It’s probably too early in the year to see a newer processor, and 3 gigs of RAM seem to be the sweet spot right now. If they follow Samsung’s example, we’ll probably see a stylus of some sort too.

What do you think LG will be showing off? A new phone? Maybe a new watch? Let us know in the comments how you think the film theme may play in.

Keep your galleries clean with Duplicate Photos Fixer (App Review)

0

Duplicate Photos Fixer

Although Cloud Storage is leading the way in backing up all of our photos and such, keeping our device memory low is still important. So in addition to backing everything up to the cloud, you also want to make sure that you don’t have any unnecessary or redundant files on your device.

Setup

Today’s app hopes to help you with that predicament. Duplicate Photos Fixer is the app that aims to keep your device storage low, and your gallery cleaned up. There are really no settings to tinker with in regards to Duplicate Photos Fixer, but when you first start the app, there is a panel that pops up and asks you which storage location you would like the app to scan. You can select a specific folder, your SD card, or the entire device.

Usage

Once you’ve selected where you would like the app to scan, Duplicate Photos Fixer will scan those folders, and show you the duplicates that were found. At the bottom of the Duplicates page, you will see how many duplicates were found, how many photos have been marked, the size of the marked photos, and a trash can button. Being able to see how much storage is being taken up by these duplicates, is a great asset to have to help control the storage.

Once you’ve had your folders scanned, and you have selected which photos you no longer want on your device, hit the trash can button. Hitting this will bring up a Confirm Delete dialogue box, that ensures that you don’t delete anything by accident. If you’re 100% sure you want to delete the duplicates, hit “OK” and your available storage increases bit by bit.

Earlier, it was mentioned that there weren’t many settings to tinker with. However, the main setting to change around is the severity of how hard Duplicate Photos Fixer looks for similar images. This is helpful if you have a lot of images that are similar, but different at the same time, and you don’t want the app to recognize the wrong images as being duplicates.

Is it for me?

All in all, Duplicate Photos Fixer is a free and easy way to keep those extra images out of your gallery. In addition to that, you will also be able to free up some space just to make sure that you never get close to filling your device up with useless files.

What We Like

  • Simple Interface
  • Adjustable Matching Levels
  • Helps save space on your device

And not so much…

  • No complaints here. Duplicate Photos Fixer works as advertised

Duplicate Photos Fixer is short, sweet, and to the point. There are really no qualms about what this app does, and there’s not much more that you need for it to do. Duplicate Photos Fixer is a great solution to save yourself some storage, or just to clean out your Gallery from those extra photos/wallpapers that have been downloaded by mistake. Head over to the Google Play Store and pick up this app for free via the link down below.

Rumor: Google to offer extended warranties for Nexus devices?

0

Insurance for your phones can be a challenge. Carriers offer insurance, but at at around $10 a month, plus a deductible when you make a claim. This can add up to be almost the same price as buying a new phone. You can buy a cheaper option from a company like SquareTrade, or if you’re an Apple device owner, you can get AppleCare+ from Apple themselves.

Now it looks like Google is getting into the warranty game too.

nexus protect

Our friends over at AndroidPolice have discovered references to “Nexus Protect” in the page source on Google’s device pages. The exact toast message shows up as this:

[blockquote author=””]You can’t add this phone unless it has the same Nexus Protect choice as other phones in your cart. You can update your choice or purchase this phone in your next order.[/blockquote]

The assumption we’re going to make is that Nexus Protect is an AppleCare type product. Currently AppleCare+ for iPhone 6 and earlier models offers you two years of hardware coverage, support and up to two “incidents” claims (with a $79 deductible).

We have no concrete evidence of what Nexus Protect will offer, but we hope that it’s in the same range as Apple’s services where you can swap out a broken phone for a nominal fee. HTC recently released Uh Oh protection. With Uh Oh, they’ll swap out your HTC One M9 in the first year no questions asked, so it looks like this is a growing trend.

We expect to see two new Nexus devices in the coming months, so it seems like that would be a logical time to launch such a program.

Lollipop for the Verizon first-gen Moto X is rolling out

0

If you happen to own the first-gen Moto X from Verizon, you’re in for a treat as Android Lollipop is on its way. The long-awaited update brings material design, added functionality, and the latest OS with a Stagefright fix to your device.

[df-gallery url=”https://www.androidguys.com/gallery/motorola-moto-x-2013/”%5D

Here’s the full change log if you happen to own one, taken from Motorola’s website:

  • Material Design: You will quickly notice a whole new colorful look and feel to your device – from fluid animations to new application and system themes, colors and widgets.
  • Notifications UI & Priorities: In order to alert you to the most timely and relevant information, the format and behavior of notifications have evolved:
    • notifications will appear on the lock screen and are intelligently ranked by type and who sent them.
    • you double-tap to open one, swipe left or right to clear one, or clear all notifications from the bottom of the list.
    • you can set the priority and privacy of notifications for each application.
    • very high priority notifications will pop up briefly over other applications so that you can take action.
    • when you dismiss a notification on one device it will be dismissed on your other Android devices, if they are connected to the Internet.
    • you can further tailor how notifications behave with the new Downtime and Ambient Display settings (see below).
  • New Interruptions & Downtime Settings: You can tailor how interruptions behave, choosing to allow all, none, or only priority interruptions.  You can personalize what counts as a priority interruption (reminders, events, calls, messages) and even tailor them to be from only contacts you specify.  The Downtime setting will allow only priority interruptions during the times and days that you specify.  e.g. allow only priority interruptions on the weekend.
  • Recent Apps (Multi-tasking): The redesigned Overview space (formerly called Recents) will include both applications and separate activities within those applications.  For instance, each open tab in Chrome will also appear here along with recent applications; both your Gmail Inbox and a draft email message will appear as separate cards.  This provides a consistent way to switch amongst tasks.
  • Flashlight: Lollipop includes a new flashlight option as part of Quick settings (swipe down with two fingers from the status bar to see it).
  • Pin a view/app: Screen pinning allows you to keep a specific app or screen in view. For example, you can ‘pin’ a game and your child will not be able to navigate anywhere else on your phone.
  • Battery: The Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection for how much time you have left while discharging or charging.  You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will save power by reducing performance and most background data operations to extend your battery life.
  • Smarter Internet Connections: With Android Lollipop, your phone will not connect to a Wi-Fi access point unless there is a verified Internet connection. This feature improves hand-offs between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, helping to maintain your video chat or voice-over-IP (VoIP) call as you switch.
  • Performance: Your phone now uses the new Android Runtime to help optimize application performance.  After upgrading to Lollipop, your applications will undergo a one-time optimization process.  Note that the optimization for ART requires more space.
  • Security: Encryption can now use a stronger 256-bit key to help protect your data.  Note that the stronger key will only be used after you perform a factory reset on Android Lollipop.  Otherwise encryption will continue to use 128-bit key.  You can turn on encryption in the Security settings menu.

You can check for the update now by going to Settings> About Device> System Updates> Check for update

HTC A9 (Aero) to debut with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, report says

0

HTC doesn’t yet consider themselves down for the count, there’s more fight left in the company.  And with this persistence, we’ve heard about a new “Hero” device coming in the Fall – aka the HTC A9 (Aero).  Unfortunately, leakers haven’t been able to scoop up more than a couple tidbits about the device at a time.  But as the release nears, the saving grace smartphone should soon come into focus.

The latest details come from LlabTooFeR, the twitter account of a ROM developer.  It is claimed that the HTC A9 will be up with the times and launch with Google’s latest version of Android, Marshmallow.

HTC_Aero_tweet

Up to date software is always a great thing to hear.  HTC’s Sense UI version will still be at 7 (debuted with the One M9), but it wouldn’t be crazy to expect some software updates/additions.

Past leaks have suggested beastly specs for the HTC A9, with power from a deca-core MediaTek Helio X20 processor.  But as HTC often supports Qualcomm, I don’t think it’d be too far-fetched to expect a Snapdragon 820 in some markets, such as the U.S.  Also, the A9 is expected to pack a whopping 4GB of RAM.

Are you looking forward to hearing more about this significant release for HTC?

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 renders reveal thin-bezels and fingerprint scanner

1

As Xiaomi get ready to release a bunch of new devices to their smartphone lineup, one of the devices expected to be announced, the Xiaomi Mi Note 2, has had a render leaked.

The renders, courtesy of @KJuma (Weibo),  show an extremely thin bezel, fingerprint scanner on the front, and a dual camera on the back.

xiaomi_mi_note_2_front_render

According to the rumors, the physical home button will house the fingerprint sensor and the dual camera setup will be a 23-Megapixel shooter, with a 12-Megapixel camera on the front. It’ll be powered by a Snapdragon 820 chip, 4GB of RAM, 3500mAh battery, and a 5.7-inch Quad HD screen.

Release date for the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is still unknown but if this device is real and the render is accurate then this looks like an awesome device.

1byone Universal car phone mount(review)

1byone is a company based in China who makes a litany of products ranging from home security systems to TV antennas all the way to mobile accessories. They are quickly building a reputation as a company who makes high quality products as evidenced by their product reviews on Amazon.com. Sure they’re spelling on their product descriptions isn’t always up to par, but don’t let that deter you from trying out their products. They are a young company and are working out small kinks. 1byone sent me a universal magnetic mount stand to use in my truck and it certainly exceeded my expectations.

Let me explain in my review.

Design and Usage

The 1byone Universal Windshield Dashboard Car Mount is one of four mounts that they offer through Amazon.com and their website.  The mount itself is made from very durable plastic with a suction cup mount on the bottom and an arm with a powerful magnet. 1byone provides two metal plates, one with a sticky gel pad that sticks to your device with a circular plate(about the size of a half dollar coin), and the other is a rectangular plate(about half the size of a standard credit card) that you can insert in between your case and phone.

Nothing is permanently stuck to your device or automobile, meaning you can adjust the positioning of the mount anytime you want or you can move it to another vehicle if need be. The gel pad is reusable if you decide to pull it off and want to put it on another phone or tablet. All you need to do is rinse it with water and it is as good as new once it dries.

1441528045703524878.images.1000x1000

Because I don’t use cases on any of my devices, the circular gel pad was the option for me to use(for the sake of this review I took pictures of the stand on my desk because getting good pictures in my truck wasn’t working out for me). I stuck the gel pad on my Amazon Fire phone which has a glass back, and the pad almost felt permanent because it was so sticky.

I attached the suction cup to the inside of my windshield and flipped the latch on the bottom of the mount to fix the mount. Once the mount was in place, and the metal plate stuck to my phone, I simply put my phone close to the magnet and it grabbed on. The magnet rotates and bends which allowed me to see my phone perfectly with a couple adjustments.

I have used other mounts which require some adjustments of arms to hold the device in place, but never used a magnetic mount. It was so much easier to use than those other mounts with adjustable arms as magnets make placement much simpler. I didn’t necessarily like the metal pad on the back on my phone as it stuck up from my phone about 2mm.

I didn’t use the metal plate inside of a phone case, but I can see that being a perfect solution to the circular disk on the back of my device. Providing both options, a metal plate and circular disk was a well thought out solution by 1byone.

After two solid weeks of daily use in the recent San Diego heat wave, and on a camping trip, the 1byone Universal car mount performed flawlessly. Mounts are nothing to get excited about, but this is going to stay in my truck and help keep my phone visible while being hands-free.

What I liked

  • Price at $11.99
  • Solid construction
  • Compact size
  • Strong suction cup and magnet
  • Ability to rotate my device 360 degrees
  • Reusable mounting system
  • Ease-of-use

What I didn’t like

  • Circular disk protruded from my device 2mm giving it an awkward feel

Summary

1byone is an upcoming company and makes high-quality products. The Universal Magnetic Mount Stand is not only cheap in price, but well thought out and well built. At $11.99 you won’t find a better mounting system and I recommend this to you if you use your phone for music, maps, and phone calls while in your automobile. Check it out on Amazon or at 1byone.

Cyanogen OS to integrate Cortana?

1

Not too long ago, Cyanogen made deals with Microsoft to pre-load their apps like Skype, Bing and Office on the commercial OS (not the custom ROM). Microsoft also recently released a beta version of their homebrewn Cortana assistant for Android phones. They are now reportedly expanding this deal to integrate Cortana into the popular Cyanogen OS that ships on phones like the OnePlus.

Previously, Cortana was unlikely to offer competition against Google Now, mainly because of how it’s integrated, but this new deal could see that change.

In an interview with International Business Times, the Cyanogen CEO Kirt McMaster revealed that Microsoft and Cyanogen are working to bring Microsoft’s digital assistant over to the OS but in a way that goes much deeper than the current Cortana Android app.

[blockquote author=””]Natural language coupled with intelligence is very important but as an application it doesn’t really work because you need to be embedded into the framework of the OS because that is where you get all the signal from the services that makes that intelligence smarter.[/blockquote]

Quite simply put, this means that Cortana will be able to properly compete with its competition.

How do you feel? Is this ruining Cyanogen with more boatware?

Latest Samsung ad takes a swing at the new iPhone

0

Never one to shy away from a publicity opportunity, Samsung have taken the opportunity of the new iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus release to add to the ongoing battle between the two companies and their smartphones.

In Samsung’s latest TV advertisement, the company highlight the lack of major features on Apple’s new flagship device and take the opportunity to highlight Samsung’s wireless charging. There’s also a twist on Apple’s latest “if it’s not an iPhone, it’s not an iPhone” tagline, to which Samsung responds with “it’s not a phone, it’s a Galaxy.”

The theme of the whole advert is summed up when the text “time to let go” appears on the screen, indicating that Samsung feel the latest Apple offerings just don’t meet the level of expectation of the market Samsung.

What do you think?
