Using Android Pay at Jamba Juice will earn you an Android collectible

1

Are you craving a smoothie? Perhaps you want a tasty, healthy treat that? Head on over to Jamba Juice this weekend and you could earn yourself a free Android collectible if you use Android Pay to pay for your order.

If you use the new mobile payment app at the juice giant this weekend you’re eligible to pick a free collectible mini Android figurine. This is a great opportunity to try out the search giant’s newest NFC based payment system and get a prize in the process.

Getting signed up for Android Pay is very easy. All you need to do is download the app, add your credit or debit card (from a participating bank) and you’re good to go. You need an Android phone with NFC (which is pretty much all of them except the OnePlus 2), Android 4.4 or better and set up home screen security. Android Pay is accepted at over a million stores around the US, so even if you’re not near a Jamba Juice, you can still try it out.

OnePlus will stop taking reservations for invites on October 22

0

OnePlus will be ending their reservation system on October 22, and focus on fulfilling those reservations by sending out invites. The system has amassed over 5 million reservations, a success by any metric. Now that production of the OnePlus 2 is ramping up, the aggressive start-up will begin to start sending out more invitations so that people can actually buy the sought after phone.

OnePlus has rightly been criticized for their invite system. It was originally put in place when the OnePlus One launched to protect the company from having too much stock at one time. If you know exactly how many phones you need, you’re never going to get stuck with inventory you can’t sell. Some phones were even being made and shipped out the same week, which led to some complaints about yellow screens from glue that hadn’t dried yet.

But, OnePlus wasn’t content to slowly make progress and fulfill orders. The company leveraged the press they were getting from the invite system, and started doing contests to jump the line and get an immediate invite. Some were dumb. Some were incredibly sexist. None of them helped the company’s image.

For the OnePlus 2, they decided to change it up. They introduced a reservation system that would again, give them an idea of how many phones they would need to produce. This time you could move further up the list by sharing links and getting your friends to sign up. Many are still annoyed with this system but, OnePlus has shipped more phones in a smaller amount of time than their last launch. Even if they didn’t launch on time.

[blockquote author=”OnePlus”]As production is ramping up, we want to ensure that as many people as possible who signed up get their invite, so we feel it’s in the best interest of our users to close the list and make sure that this happens. In one week (October 22), the OnePlus 2 Invite Reservation List will no longer be taking new entries. [/blockquote]

Now, that system is coming to an end. OnePlus will begin to send out more invites to those on the list. Those lucky enough to have purchased the phone already will also be getting shareable invites in the near future. If you’re looking for an invite, giveaways are often done on their social media account and in the OnePlus forums by the company and previous customers with invites to burn.

Time will tell if the invite system was a true positive for the company. While it did protect their product line, it also hurt their image and pushed some customers away for good. OnePlus shipped a surprising 1 million OnePlus One’s, but a long term future is not assured in such a volatile industry. You need only look at HTC’s current troubles for evidence.

What do you think about the invite system? Was it the right move for OnePlus? Should they have switched it up even more for the OnePlus 2? Let us know in the comments what you think.

Google Play update teased with a brand new design

1

Google Play is about to get a brand new look, if some new screenshots are anything to go by. Google’s pixelpusher Kirill Grouchnikov has posted screenshots of the redesigned storefront on his Google+ page, teasing some big changes coming to the marketplace.

The first of the screenshots posted by Kirill show what appears to be an intro screen for new users, broken down to two different sections: “Apps & Games”, which is rather self-explanatory and “Entertainment”, grouping together Google Play’s media offerings.

Each section will feature subcategories on the front page. The Apps & Games section will have Top Charts, Games, Categories, Family and the like, while Entertainment splits the subcategories into Movies & TV, Music, Books and Newsstand (depending on the user’s location).

Google-Play-New-Sections-Slide-Demo

Kirill has also shown off some new fancy animations, demonstrating how the transition between the two sections will look like. Support for right-t0-left writing scripts will also be included in the update.

UNIFUN Waterproof Rugged Battery for the active types (Review with discount code)

Another day, but not another battery pack. If you’ve ever ready one of my battery reviews in the past(thank you), this one is for the outdoor types who need to stay powered up. Over the past few years we have seen many devices cater to the people who love to bicycle, run, hike, camp, sail, and every other activity under the sun.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z3 come to mind when I think of devices designed to withstand the elements. If mainstream devices are going extreme, we need the accessories to match and that’s where the UNIFUN 10400mAh Rugged Battery comes in to save the day. It’s not everyday we get to test gear designed for the rugged lifestyle, so let’s check it out.

If you’re the type who doesn’t like to read in detail, here is a discount code for Amazon.com for a savings of 25%- SPDQRMTQ

unifun 6

Design

The body of the UNIFUN Rugged10400mAh Battery is constructed out of a hard orange plastic, with a softer gray plastic around the sides and in strips along the bottom and top. The gray plastic prevents the battery from sliding around on smooth surface and makes gripping the battery more comfortable.

The three USB ports are protected by an attached plastic guard which swings out of the way to allow access. Two of the USB ports serve as outlets for charging two devices at the same time, while there is a micro-USB input for charging the battery itself. According to UNIFUN this battery has an IP66 rating which means it is 100% dust proof and resistant to powerful water jets.

There is a single button that is used to both turn on and off the flashlight and to check the charge level that the battery is holding. The UNIFUN Rugged Battery also has a small plastic loop on a short side to allow for it to be clipped to a backpack or on to a waistband (you’ll need to buy your own clip).

The only downside, which is understandable, is this battery is slightly larger than portable batteries that aren’t designed to withstand the elements.

unifun 3

Usage

The UNIFUN Rugged 10400mAh Battery was very intuitive to use – straight out of the box I was able to find the single button and turn the flashlight on/off without looking up instructions. Letting my Samsung Galaxy Note 5 die down and charging it all the way back up with the battery was a breeze. There was still half or more of the charge left for me the next day when I forgot to charge my phone overnight.

To test the water resistance I ran it under the faucet, with the protective flap covered, and wiped it down. I found no water within the charging ports and everything worked as advertised. I repeated this process ten times to make sure it wasn’t a fluke and it proved worthy.

Not that I actually enjoy testing durability of products, as I was raised to take care of the things I own, I dropped it on solid concrete from waist height. It picked up a few minor smudges, which wiped off with ease, and didn’t even appear to had ever dropped. I can imagine the UNIFUN Rugged 10400mAh Battery at the bottom of my backpack when I go hiking and worrying if I can drop my backpack or not. I wish all of my gadgets came with this kind of protection.

The light bulb that did it all: The 1byone wireless Bluetooth speaker RGB light bulb (Review)

When I was first shown this little unicorn of a product, from 1byone, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. I mean, how much can a light bulb really do? I’m not going to lie, I was skeptical. For the $30 price tag I imagined a couple primary colors and audio quality equivalent to listening through a tin can, but boy was I wrong. The 1byone wireless Bluetooth RGB light bulb with a built-in speaker was one of the best surprises I had in awhile when it comes to an accessory.

RDHsvppLRHXY7s7bVcQkIM5uQjWo5ncbcFm90-Fxjgw

Design

The bulb itself is a bit larger than the run the mill lightbulb and it has a metal band around the side to allow for the audio to be heard(speaker grill). There is an accompanying smartphone app, CHSSmartBulb, that is downloaded by using your phone to read the 2D barcode on the side of the box the light bulb comes in. The app isn’t available through the Google Play store so you’ll need to make sure you have the app restrictions turned off on your device.

There are no special connectors or plugs, it simply screws into a standard sized light bulb socket.

Usage

I gave the 1byone wireless bulb a spin in a couple different lamps before I decided on its new home, a tall floor standing lamp on the far side of my bedroom. The light, when first turned on, gives a very white illuminating glow just like a typical fluorescent bulb. In order to connect to it, a first for me connecting to a light bulb, the bulb required the very familiar bluetooth pairing motions on my phone. After getting setup, I opened up the app and quickly realized the full capabilities of this little overachiever.  The bulb itself is capable of over 16 million colors and in ‘Manual’ mode and actually changes colors on the fly while you select the color in the color pallette in the app.

There is also an ‘Auto’ mode in the app where the light responds to the beat of the music playing from your phone or the sounds your phone makes.  The app itself also contains a music player, an on/off switch, and a sleep timer to control the light. The audio quality is definitely higher than I expected for this featured-packed light bulb, although a little on the quiet side.  With a fan and white noise machine running, it was just loud enough to listen to a book on tape from across my bedroom. But that was to be expected given this bulb doesn’t have a built-in amplifier like a typical bluetooth speaker.

Summary

While I went into this review thinking, “How good can a Bluetooth speaker and LED light perform?”, I was simply amazed at how much value and entertainment 1byone provided with their product. The 1byone Wireless Bluetooth 4.0 Speaker Smart LED Night Light Bulb was simply impressive. After a little research, I discovered that red light actually helps preserve night vision, helping keep you from losing vision in the dark at night. After learning that I now use the red LED light as a way to not disturb my eyes when I wake up in the middle of the night.

It’s a great accessory that is out of the way and out of site, yet provides a speaker for audio books at night when I am falling asleep. It also has an auto-off feature built into the app which comes in handy as I doze off. For $30, I highly recommend you add one of these to your life. It not only can serve as a party light, but it also functions as a standard light with a speaker. You really can’t go wrong with the 1byone wireless light bulb. Inateck Bluetooth Earphones review

When certain brands commercially take over a market space, it becomes easy for consumers to overlook underdogs who sometimes offer a better value. However, the cheaper option doesn’t always win out. Sometimes too many compromises are made in the attempt.

When I received Inateck’s in-ear Bluetooth headphones, I was interested to see how it did in this respect. Inateck isn’t a household name. But where others are charging a pretty penny for a good pair of Bluetooth earphones, Inateck is offering a quality pair for a fraction of that cost.

But do they actually hold up? Let’s find out.

DSC03779

[spacer color=”264C84″ icon=”fa-android”]

Design

DSC03799

Inateck’s approach with this pair of in-ears is a unique one. Unique in both a good and a bad way. Let’s start with the good.

I would say the standout feature in the design is via the clever use of magnets. Both ear pieces are magnetically attracted. Therefore, when you’re not using them, they conveniently clip together for clean handling.

While it’s not a huge deal, I found magnetic connection to be a nice touch. The ear pieces stay together when you’re on the move and it feels thought out. You can even connect the ends together and wear the earphones like a necklace.

[row][double_paragraph]DSC03783[/double_paragraph][double_paragraph]DSC04121[/double_paragraph] [/row]

Inateck designed the earpieces like halves of one symmetric piece. The uniformity displays a sense of quality, which is also complimented by the choice in materials. The earpieces are made of a glossy plastic, which has a nice sheen. Where the cord is attached is a soft-touch, rubbery plastic. It all feels nice to the touch and not cheap.

The sound outputs from a stem that extends from the earpiece. It’s a somewhat odd design. I’m guessing the the acoustics is done within the plastic bubble, and the earpieces handle the electronics.

DSC03810

The remote housing is more of your typical, hard plastic affair (probably to save weight). It runs down about 3 inches from the right earpiece. There’s a volume buttons on one side and a button on the other side for the on/off and pairing functions. A small blue/red light tells the user what state the device is in: pairing mode (flashing between blue and red), playing (occasional blue flash), charging (constant red), or about to run out of battery (occasional red flash).

DSC03784

The entire cord length is about 22 inches. I found the length and cord material to be ideal.

Inateck was nice enough to throw in a zipper case for transportation. I appreciated that it’s a quality case, not something flimsy just for the sake of it. There’s a mesh pocket inside for the extra eartips and any other small accessories.

DSC03780

Usability

Usability of these earphones are a mixed bag. With all my praise of the design, there is a drawback: the earpiece size. These earpieces are large. They’re almost comically large in comparison to wired in-ears.

promo_2

I mean, it makes sense considering that there is extra technology that needs to be fitted into the earpieces to make them wireless. However, I feel like the biggest compromise with these earphones was in not doing more engineering to shrink them down further.

Don’t get me wrong, they of course work. Your mileage may vary with the fit and with the earpieces staying in place. Fortunately, they’re not heavy, so there isn’t much travel if you’re bouncing around while exercising.

The eartips are of a typical silicon design, which goes within your ear canal. While moving around, I did have trouble retaining the isolation in one of my ears. But this is the same story with any eartip. It depends on how well the inner shape of your ear accepts the tip.

With that said, I wish Inateck included three sizes of eartips. These earphones only come small and medium sizes. There would be a better success rate of a good fit with more choices.

DSC03807

Battery Life

Inateck’s rating for the battery life of these earphones is 8 hours. That sounded great, especially considering that 8 hours is the widely-accepted length to a workday.

In my testing, I’m happy to say that the rating is accurate. Very accurate in fact. I got about 8 hours and 15 minutes in before it cut out.

It takes 3 hours to fully charge from a depleted battery. The earphones charge via a microUSB port, located on the right earpiece. There’s a flap protecting the port for when it’s not in use.

DSC03803

To help save battery, there are a couple nice features. First, when the earphones stop receiving the audio signal, they automatically shut off within a couple minutes of inactivity. They also automatically shut off upon detecting a magnetic connection. This is thoughtful because when you’re done listening and clamp them together, you don’t have that extra step of powering them off.

Sound

So we’ve talked about device itself plenty, how about the audio output? Bear in mind that we’re not talking about your audiophile-grade headphones here. In that respect, the sound quality is quite good and definitely exceeds the price tag.

I found there to be emphasis on the low-end (bass response). Other than that, the other frequencies are on the same level. I didn’t find the mids to be pushed back (a tendency of a lot of headphone manufacturers to bring the bass and treble out more). Vocals are satisfying on these earphones. Treble is decent, but it doesn’t reach far with detail.

In my experience, Bluetooth headphones tend to cause veiling (less clarity) in the overall sound. These earphones aren’t exempt from that, but it’s definitely acceptable.

[spacer color=”264C84″ icon=”fa-android”]

Final Thoughts

I was pretty satisfied with Inateck’s Bluetooth earphone offering. Are they perfect? No. But are they a good value? Definitely.

If you’re looking for an affordable pair of wireless in-ears and want to push the bang of your buck, you should check these out. In my opinion, the sound quality significantly exceeds their price tag, and the battery lasts a long while. Yes, they’re on the large side, but compromise has to be made somewhere.

You can find these earphones on Amazon for only $33 (as of the time of this writing).

Blu Products launches BLU Studio Energy 2 and BLU Energy X

0

Blu Products, a company who focuses on making unlocked smartphones, just announced the Blu Studio Energy 2 and Blu Energy X as a part of their incredible lineup of devices. The main focus of both of the latest release is long battery life and 30 days of standby is a result of their incredible efforts(and are aptly named Energy). Blu also claims you can get up to three full days of standard usage on a single charge. This is something I would love to see tested for our readers.

Both are available today at Amazon.com, with the Studio Energy 2 being priced at $179.00 while the Energy X comes in at an unbelievable low price of $109.

The Studio Energy 2 packs a massive 5,000mAh battery into a premium design. The super popular Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Moto X Pure only come with a 3000mAh battery, so clearly at 2,000 mAh bigger with lesser hardware to drive, this Blu device should get incredible battery life.

Studio Energy 2 (PRNewsFoto/BLU Products)
Studio Energy 2 (PRNewsFoto/BLU Products)

Blu Products also realize that customers are demanding more for their money, not just spec wise, but design wise. The Studio Energy 2 comes in an aircraft grade aluminum body, with minimal plastic, and sand blasted edges for a premium look and grippable form factor. It will come powered by a 64-bit Mediatek quad-core processor, 1.5GB RAM and 16GB of memory, with a 5 inch 720x1080P Gorilla Glass 3 covered display. Not bad for $179.00 and unlocked with no hidden fees.

The Energy X also comes in a premium package with a 4,000mAh battery. It comes with a 5 inch display covered in Gorilla Glass 3, dual-SIM slots, Android 5.1, Mediatek quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory. Again the main focus of this phone is that increible battery which should allow you to stay disconnected from a wall outlet for three full days.

Energy X (PRNewsFoto/BLU Products)
Energy X (PRNewsFoto/BLU Products)

Blu continues to push the limits of low priced phones as evidenced by the Blu Studio Energy 2 and Energy X. They see where the industry lacks and fills those gaps with great devices at low prices.

Additionally, 4G LTE is supported nationwide on T-Mobile and AT&T network which includes Metropcs, Straight Talk, Simple Mobile, Cricket, and others.

Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch arriving next month at Verizon and T-Mobile

0

The Samsung Gear S2 will be available Nov. 5th from Verizon and Nov. 15th from T-Mobile. According to T-Mobile’s website, they will be offering the Gear S2 with a “wearable plan” at $5/month where users can call, tweet, and email with unlimited talk, text and data all from your wrist. I’m sure that will appeal to many customers as there are times when you need to be free of your phone like when you’re out running or on a bike ride. The Gear S2 will be available in two colors from T-Mobile, Dark Gray and Silver, and will cost $15/month over 24 months with no money down.

According to Verizon, you can now pre-order the gear S2 in the same colors that T-Mobile offers on a 2-year contract for $299.99 or you can buy it outright for $349.99. The website doesn’t state whether or not there is a monthly fee associated with the 2-year contract, but there is a $350 dollar cancellation fee. Consider if $50 dollars is worth signing that contract. Verizon expects to ship their pre-ordered Gear S2’s on November 5th.

The Gear S2 is Samsung’s take on the smartwatch and differs by using its own platform called Tizen which is different than Android Wear and the Apple Watch. Due to that simple fact alone there will be less apps available than what is in the Google Play store and the chances of updates might be smaller due to Samsung’s track record. Nonetheless, the Gear S2 is a great looking watch and is priced competitively amongst the competition.
