LG G5: When and Where you can buy it?

2

LG has taken the wraps off its new LG G5 smartphone. The G5 will have amazing new features. You’ll be able to add modules to expand the functionality of the device like the ability to control a drone, listening to high def audio with a B&O DAC, and expanding the battery life, among others.

But, when can you get your hands on it? Here’s everything we know about who is carrying the device, and when you can buy it. We’ll keep updating this list as details become available.

United States

Verizon: The LG G5 is coming “this spring”. While that doesn’t give us much of an idea, it does narrow it down a little bit. You can check out Verizon’s page on the LG G5 here.

AT&T: The nation’s second biggest carrier has indicated that pricing and availability details will come “in the coming weeks” You can check out AT&T’s page on the LG G5 here.

T-Mobile: T-Mobile has yet to release anything on its plans to carry the LG G5

Sprint: Sprint’s ever expanding network will be offering the LG G5 as well. We don’t have an exact date but, “Device pricing and availability date will be announced soon”. You can check out Sprint’s LG G5 page here.

US Cellular: US Cellular will be carrying the G5, but release details haven’t been shared yet. US Cellular has let us know that it will be sharing its timeline “in the coming weeks”

Do you plan to pick up the G5? Let us know down in the comments what you think of the new device from LG. While you wait for the phone to be released, be sure to check out all the details on the LG G5 here.

The LG G5 is official: Everything you need to know

2

LG’s new flagship smartphone, the LG G5, is now official. If you stay updated with Android news and rumours, you have probably already been bombarded with the leaked designs and specifications that have been popping up everywhere on the Internet. No more need for speculation anymore, as we now know the final specifications for one of 2016’s most anticipated flagships. Boy, does this phone seem like a beast.

Coming with almost the same specifications as we predicted, the LG G5 brings incremental changes compared to earlier LG flagships. Based around a smaller 5.3″ screen, the metal build brings a new breath of air to LG’s flagship line with some worthy new features. The LG G5 measures 149.4 x 73.9 x 7.7mm and weighs 159 grams.

Screenshot (100)

Moving away from their past designs, the G5 has the volume and power buttons back on the side of the phone. We haven’t seen this since the original LG G. The fingerprint scanner now sits below the camera where the buttons used to lie on previous iterations. Somewhat familiar of the Nexus 6P, the build is mainly aluminum.

The 5.3-inch Quad HD Quantum display has again been improved upon. Not specifying anything major, LG just mentioned that it is more battery efficient as compared to previous versions.  There is also a built-in “Always On” display which offers extended use of the screen. It is part of the main screen, and only uses a third of the display area which helps conserve battery. Think of it as Motorola’s Ambient Display, expect with added functionality.

If you remember the overheating issues that plagued the Snapdragon 810, LG wisely decided to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 SoC in the LG G4. Thankfully, things have improved on Qualcomms side, and the G5 is proudly using the Snapdragon 820, which is also currently the best in the market. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC  naturally is 64-bit. Unfortunately, we do not know of the specific configuration that it sports at present, so stay tuned to be updated.

Screenshot (103)

The Snapdragon 820 SoC is paired with 4GB of memory and should provide a premium amount of performance, at least on paper. It also comes with 32GB of internal storage expandable via microSD card slot that can take up to 2TB.

LG unfortunately went for a smaller 2,800mAh battery, for reasons we can’t quite put our finger on. They also did not elaborate on expected battery life and efficiency, although the claimed battery life never lives up to the expectations anyway. Thankfully it is removable.

The G5 sports a dual camera at the back, consisting of one 16-megapixel and one 8-megapixel shooter. The cameras sit on either side of the sensors and LED flash, one with a 78-degree standard lens and another with a 135-degree wide-angle lens (the 8MP), which LG says is “the widest available on any camera”. The G5 comes with an 8-megapixel front camera, which has slight improvements over the G4’s.

Screenshot (108)

Perhaps the most prominent feature of the flagship, the G5 offers a nifty tool that institutes a modular design. This is basically a tray which can be ejected from the bottom of the phone. It houses the battery and can be used to add extra modules onto the device. This includes a camera module called LG Cam Plus, which offers a nifty handle and balance point for improved hand-held photography, as well as convenient hardware buttons for shutter release, zoom and flash toggle. There is also a 32-bit HiFi DAC made in partnership with Bang and Olufsen. We can’t wait to see how well this works.

Screenshot (99)

Software wise, the LG G5 comes with Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 under the hood, with LG’s own UX interface . We did not get a peek at what it looks like, so we do not expect it to be radically different as compared to the UX 4.0 on the G4.

LG did not comment or specify on launch dates or prices, although we expect the phone to be available shortly is major markets. Stay updated on availability on AG.com. What do you think about the G5?

This SONY Xperia PP10 just got leaked…

0

Amongst all the Galaxy S7 and G5 leaks, it’s refreshing to see something else pop up to feast our eyes on. This time, it is a Xperia device revealed by infamous leakster Evan Blass through Twitter.

http://twitter.com/evleaks/status/701198491335467008/photo/1

Dubbed the PP10, not much is known about the device. With either a metal or brushed plastic build, it takes the normal design cues that we’ll expect to see from a Sony device. Judging by the average-looking camera sensor and LED flash, we doubt that it is a high-end device, but rather a budget or medium-range offering. The standard layout can be observed with all the volume and power buttons.

Interestingly, the lock screen software seems a tad different than what we’re accustomed to, hinting perhaps that Marshmallow comes pre-installed.

Sony does have a slot tomorrow at Mobile World Congress, but we don’t expect to see anything fancy or groundbreaking. Perhaps this is one of the things that will be revealed, along with a few other products.

Leaked brochure reveals Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge specs and release date

3

[dropcaps]A[/dropcaps]s announcements of new devices draw closer, leaks and rumors ramp up, but we may have just seen the mother of all leaks as a Spanish brochure for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge reveals all the details about the specs and release date of the devices.

Screen Shot 2016-02-20 at 21.29.13

Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Specs

  • 5.1-inch (S7) / 5.5-inch (S7 Edge) QHD SuperAMOLED
  • Snapdragon 820
  • 4GB RAM
  • Pressure sensitive screen
  • MicroSD slot
  • 3,000mAh battery (S7) / 3,600mAh battery (S7 Edge)
  • IP67 water resistance

Galaxy S7 and S7 Release Date

According to the brochure, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge will launch on March 11th, 2016, in Spain, so expect a similar timeframe for the rest of Europe and perhaps even the US.

The Galaxy S7 will set you back €700, with the S7 Edge a cool €800. Both devices will come bundled with a VR headset as we expected, and that probably confirms why the device will come with MicroUSB rather than USB Type-C as we reported earlier in the week.

We must point out that although this looks pretty solid evidence, it is still a pre-release leak and must be therefore treated as such. We will find out for sure all the details about the new Samsung flagships next week at MWC 2016.

Samsung Galaxy S7 rumor points towards always-on display

0

[dropcaps]T[/dropcaps]here have been previous rumors suggesting that the Galaxy S7 could have an always-on display like we have seen in devices like the Nexus 6P and Moto X, and we’ve touched upon these rumors in our Galaxy S7 roundup.

These rumors gained even more traction when Samsung filed a patent for an always-on display only last week, and such speculation just received another bump with a rather odd discovery. If you look in the Samsung Theme Store after your Galaxy device is upgraded to Marshmallow, there is a theme called “Cuzko”, which seems to provide an always-on display feature, showing a black background and white notifications.

cuzko-1024x921

It could be that this theme is hooking into software features that would allow the always-on display of the Galaxy S7 to have the ability to do so without dedicated hardware support. As such, an always-on display could be made backwards compatible with older Galaxy devices, which is perfect for those who are happy with their Galaxy S6.

Whilst this is no means concrete evidence that the Galaxy S7 will in-fact come with an always-on display, this theme in the Samsung Theme Store is clearly able to simulate such a feature without dedicated hardware so it will be interesting to see how and if Samsung implement the feature when the device is revealed at MWC 2016 in a few days time.

Caterpillar S60 – Built In Thermal Imaging Powered by FLIR (preview)

1

Spies Like Us

Have you ever wanted a phone that could transform into a bulldozer? Neither have I, but here’s something just as cool!

The Cat S60 is a new phone by Caterpillar that features not only impressive specs, but also integrated thermal imaging. That’s right; thermal imaging. Now you can play Mobile Strike and see in the dark!

Let’s talk about specs. Although this phone is not geared towards the average joe on the street, the S60 is pretty powerful and will probably handle just about anything you can throw at. Let’s break it down:

What’s Inside

Coming in at high speed is not usually Caterpillar’s MO. Let’s be honest; Cat is known for its construction equipment. However, the Cat S60 is rocking a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617, octa-core processor and 3GB of RAM. With that Snapdragon 617 you are also getting the Adreno 405 GPU built in.

Beauty And The Beast
Beauty And The Beast

Is this top of the line? No. However, this is formidable hardware that will meet just about any need you’ll have on the construction site and during your lunch break (Angry Birds, anyone?)

The S60 features a 4.7″ HD capacitive display with native wet finger and glove support.

With Gorilla Glass 4, a MIL spec 810G rating and being drop proof up to 1.8m (5.9′ approximately), this phone can take a beating and keep on going.

The Cat S60 will be 4G LTE capable.

With all of this flair, you’re going to need a powerful battery. Cat has you covered by providing a very capable 3800 mAh battery for the S60.

The Good Stuff

Let’s talk about what we’re really excited about with this phone:

  1. It’s waterproof
  2. Built in thermal imaging

The Cat S60 will be waterproof, and will be functional for up to one hour at a depth of up to 5 meters (approximately 16.4 ‘).

The S60 comes equipped with a 13 megapixel rear facing camera featuring dual flash, as well as a 5 megapixel front facing camera. Both are functional under water. The SIM and micro-SD slots are accessible via a latch release on the back.

The built in thermal imaging camera will be powered by FLIR’s Lepton Microcamera Module, which is activated through a custom app.

Predator Mode
Predator Mode

The thermal camera will be able to measure heat and surface temperatures from 50-100 feet away. If you’ve ever wanted to be the Predator, now’s your chance.

cat-s60

The S60’s internals are housed and protected by the phone’s ample Strengthened Die Cast Frame.

According to Cat’s webpage for the S60, the phone will be running Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Release and Pricing

While this phone is going to be aimed at those who are involved with rough and tumble lines of work, you have to admit that the S60 is just really darn cool. I mean, how often do you see a phone with FLIR powered thermal imaging built in?

Ever since I was old enough to work and buy things for myself, I’ve always had a taste for the latest and greatest with features I have absolutely no need for. That started with a Windows Mobile 6 device, for me, and it’s never stopped. I don’t need this phone, have no practical use for it, but boy would I like to have one. It’s just really, really cool.

The Cat S60 is planned to be displayed at Mobile World Congress, February 22nd-28th, Barcelona Stand CS80.

The S60 should be available for purchase later this year at a price point of $599.

Alcatel announces flagship IDOL 4S and IDOL 4 smartphones

1

Last year, Alcatel (formerly Alcatel Onetouch) released the budget flagship IDOL 3 which became one of the best budget phones of 2015. This year, it looks like Alcatel is ready to do it again. The newly announced IDOL 4S and IDOL 4 smartphones improve upon their predecessor in every way imaginable.

IDOL 4S

While both the IDOL 4 and 4S are touted as Alcatel’s flagships this year, the IDOL 4S comes with the highest specs and presumably highest price tag. Taking a look at what we get with the 4S, and it’s easy to see how much it has improved from the IDOL 3 just a year ago.

[alert color=”green”]IDOL 4S spec list:

  • 5.5″ QHD (1440 x 2560) AMOLED display
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor
  • 32GB on-board storage (MicroSD support up to 512GB)
  • 3GB RAM
  • 3000 mAh battery
  • 16-megapixel camera (back)
  • 8-megapixel camera (front)
  • Quick Charge
  • 4K video recording @ 30fps
  • Dual, front-facing JBL branded speakers
  • Reversible UI
  • Boom Key[/alert]

IDOL 4

When the IDOL 3 was released, it came in two different screen sizes (4.7″ and 5.5″) with two different spec sheets but the names remained the same. Thankfully, Alcatel remedied this problem by separating their two flagships by name instead of just size. The IDOL 4 is the upgrade to the 4.7″ version of the IDOL 3, and the updated spec sheet for it is just as nice as the IDOL 4S.

[alert color=”green”]IDOL 4 spec sheet:

  • 5.2″ Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor
  • 16GB on-board storage (MicroSD support up to 512GB)
  • 3GB RAM
  • 2610 mAh battery
  • 13-megapixel camera (back)
  • 8-megapixel camera (front)
  • 1080p video recording @ 30fps
  • Dual, front-facing JBL branded speakers
  • Reversible UI
  • Boom Key[/alert]

We are seeing welcome improvements in the IDOL 4 and 4S such as higher screen resolutions, more on-board storage, more RAM, faster processors, and increased camera resolutions compared to the IDOL 3 line, but we are also happy to see some of our favorite features make a return from last year.

Boom ButtonMost notably, the gimmick-turned-godsend Reversible UI will be included in the IDOL 4 and 4S. This feature would orient the entire UI depending on how the phone was being held which basically eliminated the possibility of taking your phone out of your pocket upside down. We originally viewed this as a gimmick, but after spending some time with the IDOL 3, we loved it and hoped it would be a feature implemented by more manufacturers.

This year’s IDOL line will be even more reversible than its predecessor with the speakers being able to augment themselves to provide the best sound experience no matter what way the phone is being held. The most interesting part of this feature is that the speakers will also be able to fire backwards when the phone is laid face down. No more muffled sound coming from these phones!

The Boom Key is this year’s standout change. It promises to provide custom features for activities such as taking pictures, listening to music, looking at videos, and even gaming, but we have yet to see if these features are even something we want. That being said, we would have never asked for a reversible UI before seeing it on the IDOL 3 so we will be withholding a final decision until we actually get to spend some time using the Boom Key Alcatel’s newest flagships.

IDOL 4

For those of you looking at the IDOL 4S, there will be a special surprise in the package the phone comes in. The IDOL 4S box will actually double as a virtual reality headset that you can use with the IDOL 4S. Combining the 2K display on the 4S with virtual reality should create an awesome experience.

What do you think of Alcatel’s new IDOL 4 and 4S? Are either making it onto your “Buy” list? Let us know down in the comments!

Google Play Music gets updated to version 6.4 APK Download

1

What is it?

Google has pushed an update to its official Google Play Music app on Android to bring it to version 6.4 and ever closer to Podcast support within the app. On top of the few fixes and features introduced in this version, Google is also prepping an exclusive partnership deal with the BRIT awards.

What it brings?

This particular update to Google Play Music doesn’t necessarily unlock any new features, but instead sets the path for future code to be activated. These include:

[list][item icon=”fa-star” ]Podcast Playback Order[/item][item icon=”fa-star” ]BRIT Awards Exclusive[/item][/list]

The BRIT Awards partnership is an interesting one and most certainly will see the recorded live performances of the artists at the BRIT Awards being made exclusively available to Google Play Music.

How to get it?

For those new at installing apps and updates manually via APK files, it is very simple process. The benefits of installing manually include not having to wait for the automatic update to hit your phone via the Google Play Store. First, you’ll download the APK file by hitting the button below, and this will download the file to your phone. Once downloaded, tap the file to bring up the installation prompt. You can read the app permissions if applicable and then tap ‘Install’. The app is now ready to use!
