Always have power in your pocket with the mophie powerstation mini (review)

Over the past few years smartphone  companies have been making our phones bigger and bigger and inexplicably the batteries don’t seem to change much in size. The iPhone 5s was a 4-inch phone and sported a 1560 mAh battery. Fast forward two years to the iPhone 6s, which grew by nearly an inch diagonally, which results in 3.11 square inches of additional surface area and yet the 6s only has a 1715 mAh battery, that’s only a 155 mAh improvement to power a much larger (albeit same pixel density) display in a phone that is two years newer.

I know we’re not here to talk about iPhones and I’m probably going to be chased through town with torches and pitchforks for mentioning it but it just goes to illustrate my point that a lot of the biggest smartphone manufacturers don’t seem to have our best interests at heart when they design their latest hardware. We need a battery that gets us through the day, not a battery that gets us through to lunch. That’s where products like the mophie powerstation mini come in.

Powerstation Mini features

Mophie’s powerstation mini comes sporting a 2500 mAh battery, that’s only 50 mAh less than the Galaxy S6 has on board and it comes in a very handy 1.92 x 3.64 x 0.53 inch package. You might not want to carry it around in your pocket, since you (if you are anything like me) are already loaded down with more than enough to keep your pockets full, but you could and if you carry a purse or a backpack then you won’t even notice it’s there.

The benefits of the powerstation mini are obvious. If you don’t have any power left, it does. It will charge your phone (or tablet) at a rate of up to 1A, which is pretty average for this type of product. At that rate, it will probably take about twice as long as what you’re used to with a standard wall charger and most modern smartphones, but this is a mobile charger we’re talking about.

When I plugged it into my Nexus 6P, it took it from 20% to 50% in about 45 minutes, which was more than enough battery to get me through the rest of my day and keep me from having to worry about whether I’d be stranded without my phone. The beauty of this, though, is that you can have it with you when you’re hiking or at the beach or at a conference like CES or MWC (where battery life is as valuable as gold).

It’s also really nice that the powerstation mini has an LED indicator that tells you how much power is left. Two LEDs tells me that there’s about 50% battery left and that means that I can charge my Nexus 6P about 1/3 of the way, which is a huge help when you’re still a couple of hours away from a proper wall charger.

IMG_20160303_225141

Its drawbacks

The powerstation mini isn’t without its faults. First, it doesn’t come with any cables for either charging it or charging your phone, though you could presumably use the same cable for both if your phone has a micro-USB port. And though we all have plenty of those cables lying around, I’ve found that it is far more convenient when using these types of chargers to have a very short cable or a very long cable and a short one is much more portable.

I use something like this to cover myself in all situations. The powerstation mini is also rather pricey compared to its competitors, coming it at a retail price of $59.99, but Verizon currently has their accessories at 30% off, so you can snag one for only $39.99.

IMG_20160303_225159

The final word

The mophie powerstation mini is very good at what it does, but there’s nothing that really differentiates it from its competition and it’s rather expensive. On the other hand, it’s coming from a reliable and trustworthy brand and is covered from the manufacturer by a year-long warranty, which much of their competition isn’t going to offer. As with most things, you have to weigh the good with the bad and come to your own conclusion as to whether this product is right for you.

Stone Tower – a strangely addicting game about stacking rocks [Review]

Overview –

Stacks asymmetrical rocks as high as humanly possible. Play alone or compete against someone else to make a tower that will rend the sky.

Developer: Kiraline Inc

Price: Free (In-App Purchases, purely optional)

Highlights:

  • Simple, charming graphics.
  • Habit-forming gameplay.
  • Free-to-play, no micro-transactions necessary.

Setup –

Super easy; install the app, login with Google Play, and stack rocks.

Impressions –

Stone Tower is a very, very simple game. There are only two modes; 1 on 1, or Single Player. In the latter mode, you simply stack rocks – long rocks, short rocks, fat rocks, skinny rocks, curved rocks – in order to build the tallest tower you can without toppling it. Rocks can be manipulated simply, rotating them on a single axis 360 degrees before you drop them from the sky. The gravity mechanics can be a little bit wonky at times, but overall it’s pretty solid.

[row][double_paragraph][df-caption title=”Stack ’em up.” url=”https://www.androidguys.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/1456984303197.jpg”%5D%5B/double_paragraph%5D%5Bdouble_paragraph%5D [df-caption title=”…Watch ’em fall.” url=”https://www.androidguys.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/1456984339997.jpg”%5D%5B/double_paragraph%5D [/row]

In the 1 on 1 mode, you compete against another player. The two of you are actually building the same tower in real time, with each player placing one rock at a time; sort of like a reverse Jenga. The first player to make the tower topple, loses. You wager “Coins” and “Trophies” in each match; if you win, you earn more of both. If you lose, you lose the ones you wagered. Coins can also be used to undo your last move that toppled the tower, in single player mode.

[df-caption title=”Buy more coins if you need them.” url=”https://www.androidguys.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/1456984418885.jpg”%5D

You can buy additional coins using real money, but in my experience with the game it really isn’t necessary. In addition to earning coins by winning multiplayer matches, you can also come back every 24 hours for a free spin on the “Reward Wheel” to get a random amount of coins.

What I like

  • Cute graphics.
  • Simple, addicting gameplay.
  • True free-to-play.

What I don’t

  • Coins seem shoe-horned in.
  • Same pieces every time means a finite number of combinations for each game.

Conclusion –

Stone Tower is a very fun game that’s absolutely worth a download. Give it a try. Stacking rocks has never been so cute, or so enjoyable.

Samsung partners with Six Flags to bring first virtual reality roller coasters to North America

2

It seems that Samsung is not leaving any stone unturned in expanding the reach of its virtual reality headset. Now, the company has partnered with the famous theme park giant Six Flags to provide a virtual reality experience to riders that will be powered by the Gear VR headset.

gear_vr_innovator

Thanks to the new partnership, riders at nine parks will be able experience the first virtual reality roller coasters in North America. Aided by Samsung’s VR headsets, riders will be able to fully immerse themselves in the 360-degree steep drops, twists and turns of some of the most popular Six Flags coasters.

Speaking from the technical point of view, the virtual reality world will be made possible with the help of accelerometers, proximity and gyro sensors that will convert all the real-life action into an amazing VR experience.

If you want to enjoy the new VR Roller Coaster, you won’t have to wait a long, as it will be launched sometime later this month. It will be expanded to at least nine VR coasters across across the United States by summer. To find out more about the locations and other information about Six Flag VR coasters, visit Samsung’s website.

iPhone 6S vs Samsung Galaxy S7 Camera Test: It’s not even close!

8

When a new flagship device comes out from Samsung it seems only natural that it be compared to the flagship Apple device of the current time. In this particular test, it’s the camera that is of focus, and with a reputation going into this battle of the iPhone 6S packing the best camera on the market, it should be a close battle, right?

The Samsung Galaxy S7 features a new 12-Megapixel f/1.7 sensor, which trumps the f/2.2 sensor on the iPhone 6S, allowing better low-light performance and sharper images during normal operation. The Galaxy S7 is also feature-rich as it offers a Dual Pixel autofocus, making capturing moving subjects easier due to its fast autofocus.

Do the specs live up to real-life application? Check out the video below to find out.

The Galaxy S7 seems the clear winner; with its superior sensor, focusing ability, and software enhancements, it seems the crown of the best camera on the market has changed hands from the iPhone 6S.

Speck MightyPack review

[df-subtitle]The perfect companion for those who carry multiple gadgets at a time[/df-subtitle]

As someone who is able to work from practically any laptop or computer, I am fortunate in that I can call just about any room my “office”. While I do have a standalone office that I work from on a daily basis, I am often found lugging phones, tablets, and laptops back and forth. Moreover, I also have a few notebooks and other items that I like to keep on my person.

I’ve played with a number of solutions over the last few years, some of which are more in line with messenger bags and totes. Occasionally, I may use a traditional backpack, however a standard school-ready design doesn’t seem to cut it.

IMG_20160303_160620664-01

I recently spent a few weeks playing with the MightyPack from Speck and believe I have found my new daily driver. Available in three colors, the model I am using is (Coal Dust) black and (Moody) blue.

The first thing to note about this back pack is that it is rather thin. This is the same even when you fill it up with various items. This is nice to have when you are walking on trade show floors or in packed environments where you might run into a lot of people.

Upon unzipping the backpack the next thing I noticed was that it had pockets just about everywhere. Unzip here and you find three slots. Unzip there and you’ve got another five. There is enough room for a 15 inch laptop, a tablet, a notebook, a couple of writing utensils, and so much more.

IMG_20160303_150746154-01

In addition to my laptop, I can usually be found carrying some headphones and perhaps a back up smart phone as well. And, depending on what the situation calls for, I’ll sometimes have a magazine or two, a camera, and portable power bank. This bag lets me get all of that plus room for that proverbial bag of chips.

The MightyPack is physically light but there is a surprising amount of padding to protect your devices. Given that I have been known to drop my backpack in the past, I was pleased to see the amount of cushion protecting my laptop. There’s something on every side of your gadgets to keep them safe.

One feature that I have already come to appreciate is that it’s TSA-compliant. This means I can unzip the backpack completely and lay it flat to pass through an x-ray machine. Seeing as how I travel a few times a year, this is a nice touch that keeps me from getting aggravated over fumbling around with a bag.

IMG_20160303_150805107-01

Another cool item in this bag is that there is a hard shell pocket on the outside. Should you want to carry some reading glasses or something you do not wish to damage, this shell and the soft fleece inside, protect your valuables. Have an expensive pair of headphones you like to take with you? Thrown in the shell. It’s big enough to accommodate a 7-inch tablet.

I found the stitching to be very good in all areas of the backpack. This includes the arm straps, seams, pockets, and just about anywhere else you might look.  The netting and mesh help maintain a lightweight design and also allow battery packs and devices to stay cool. But, should you run into an issue with the build quality, you can fall back on a two-year warranty. Indeed, Speck will replace the bag if there any manufacturing defects for two years, anywhere in the world.

IMG_20160303_150945605_HDR-01

In my short time with it, I’ve come to love the MightyPack. It’s a great combination of “rough and tumble” and professional portability.   Do note, however that because of all of the pockets and compartments available, you may end up carrying around quite a load.

You can pick up a mighty back from the Speck website for about $80. Checking around, it’s also available at outlets such as Best Buy and Amazon with roughly the same price.

Android Marshmallow adoption pales in significance to iOS 9 – Why?

7

Usage statistics of Android are always an interesting read – versions from years ago always seem to stick around on the chart refusing to die. That’s not what’s interesting about the statistics, what is interesting is the number of devices running the latest Android Marshmallow software version compared to how the latest version of the opposition is doing, iOS 9.

According to Apteligent, Android Marshmallow has been growing significantly since the beginning of 2016, jumping from 0.67% of the Android share to 4.7% on February 21st. However, compare that to iOS 9, which after the same period of 4 months, was sat at 79% adoption, but why?

Screen Shot 2016-03-03 at 2.13.31 PM

Android updates are always hampered by OEM and carriers who need to add their ‘touch’ or approval to the update. This introduces a significant delay that iOS simply doesn’t have, as Apple can push the update directly to their devices through their Developer Program or Public Beta Program.

Although Android saw a 7-times increase in the devices Marshmallow was installed on, it is still a long way to challenge the superior adoption rate of iOS.

Could it be the more compelling reasons to update to new versions of iOS? Is Google to blame for not showcasing the importance and new features of an update? Or is it purely down to the delay that the carrier and OEM’s introduce?

Amazon just announced the Echo Tap and Dot

0

Amazon’s wildly popular Amazon Echo is now expanding into portability and stand alone voice assistance.

The Echo originally debuted last year and has a 4.5/5 star review rating from over 33k users on Amazon.com and costs $179.99 with free shipping. It has been a bestseller for many months once users learned how easy and helpful the little speaker is. Not only could the virtual voice assistant Alexa, Amazon, or Echo (names) be controlled to play music over WiFi and Bluetooth, it could also control home automation, answer everyday questions, create shopping lists, set reminders and alarms and read audiobooks. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of what the Echo can do which explains its insane popularity.

The best part is you can control the Echo through voice commands or manage it through an Android and/or iOS app. The voice recognition on the Echo is unparalleled.

Amazon managed to keep its latest announcements a secret until the release today.

Amazon has now launched the Amazon Echo Tap and Echo Dot which expand upon the success of its first virtual assistant tool.

Amazon Echo Tap

61uaiTkIRSL._SL1000_

The Amazon Echo Tap finally brings portability to the virtual voice assistant. The original Echo could only be used while plugged into a wall outlet, because the “always listening” feature is a major source of power consumption. The Echo Tap can be pre-ordered right now and is already pre-selling as the number one new release. It will be released March 31, 2016 so you might want to get your orders in now as the first Echo still continues to sell out on a regular basis. It will cost just $129.99 with free Prime shipping and will offer similar functionality to the Echo with portability.

  • Nine hours of playback
  • Just tap and ask for music from Prime Music, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn
  • Uses the Alexa Voice Service when connected to Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot to play music, read the news, provide weather reports, and even order a pizza
  • Streams all your music via Bluetooth from your phone or tablet
  • Includes Charging Cradle

Unlike the original Echo, the Tap will not be “always listening” to preserve battery life. You will have to push the microphone button built into the speaker.

You can also pre-order a Sling Cover for $19.99 which will protect your Echo Tap as well as make give you a loop so you can hang it. It will come in six colors and is made from durable silicone.

71brjsjjLBL._SL1500_

The Amazon Echo Tap can be pre-ordered for $129.99 at Amazon.com.

Amazon Echo Dot

1

The other virtual assistant Amazon announced today is the Amazon Echo Dot. This unit will be available in limited quantities and can only be ordered from an existing Amazon Echo or Fire TV for $89.99.

“Echo Dot is a hands-free, voice-controlled device that uses the same far-field voice recognition as Amazon Echo. Dot has a small built-in speaker—it can also connect to your speakers over Bluetooth or with the included audio cable. Dot connects to the Alexa Voice Service to play music, provide information, news, sports scores, weather, and more—instantly.”

It is essentially the Amazon Echo minus the large speaker functionality. It’s purely a voice assistant and can expand your love of the Echo at a cheaper price. Instead of a large speaker, it will be more sleek and streamlined with a small speaker for talking back to you.

Check out the Amazon Echo Dot at Amazon.com.

The Android Amazon Alexa app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store for free.
