How to get the LG V10 camera app on the LG G4 [Tutorial]

0

Shortly after the release of the LG G4, LG announced the LG V10. With a secondary auxiliary display and the Snapdragon 810, it was a reasonable step-up from LG’s yearly flagship, and was perhaps what the G4 was meant to be.

Among the features that came with the V10 was the manual video control that was missing in the G4. Although you could extensively tweak settings like the exposure and color warmth while taking photos, that was not the case for video recording. Fortunately, some tweakers from XDA have ported the LG V10 camera app so that it can be used almost flawlessly with the G4, with no root required.

Screenshot (59)

Instead of replacing the original camera app, it installs it as a separate one. This effectively means that you’re not fiddling with things that you’re not supposed to and that you can easily turn back to the original app if needed.

To install, you simply need to download the .apk and install it as you would any other application. You of course need to have installations from unknown sources turned on in the phone settings menu.

You can download the app from the XDA website right here after reading the brief instructions on their site.

Screenshot (60)

Among the features you’ll receive on top of the V10 features, is the 60FPS FHD recording and advanced microphone control with wind noise cancellation.

The only bug is that you cannot save files to the SD card directly from the camera, and there’s another small bug which duplicates the HD/FHD/UHD buttons when you open the settings tab (which is not really a problem).

Iconic game publishers make moves on mobile market

0

Mobile gaming is now much more than just something you do while you’re waiting for the bus or riding the subway. It’s big business and even companies that built their fortunes on traditional console titles can no longer afford to ignore the ever-growing, omnipresent platform. Among the publishers making renewed efforts at capturing the mobile market are Nintendo and Capcom, two of the most classic and beloved game makers of all time.

We’d been hearing since last year that Nintendo was finally going to get into the mobile market amidst less than stellar sales of the Wii U. The first among these is the recently released social title, Miitomo. According to Wired, the launch of the app was a resounding success in Japan, accumulating more than 1 million users in a mere three days. Nintendo’s first foray into the world of social titles isn’t as innocent as it may seem, though. The app supports micro-transactions and the company looks poised to be making a large chunk of change with its entry into the mobile market. Miitomo is just the tip of the iceberg for what the gaming titan has in store (and since its release, it’s been the subject of harsh criticism).

Nintendo has also been teasing the forthcoming Pokemon GO with a series of trailers and screenshots that have fans frothing at the mouth for the opportunity to hunt their favorite monsters in the real world. Gameplay of the augmented reality title was previewed at SXSW, but there’s still no word yet as to an official release date. Although, it has been said that the game will definitely be released at some point in 2016. That day can’t come soon enough, and with the new VR capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy S7, we can’t for the possibility of combining the two.

Joining Nintendo is another Japanese gaming giant, Capcom. As the industry continues moving toward mobile platforms in lieu of traditional consoles, it’s not surprising that a company so rooted in the old-school way of the thinking is finally beginning to look at things differently. Capcom’s launch of Street Fighter V was plagued by server issues, requiring several patches within the first month of its release and the company desperately needs a shot in the arm if it hopes stay relevant.

IGN reports that Capcom is planning to release four games based on some of its more popular franchises before March 31, 2017. These titles are expected to include classic franchises such as the Mega Man series along with modern staples like Monster Hunter and Sengoku Basara. The company also recently released a comprehensive gathering of its titles starring the Blue Bomber in last year’s well-received Mega Man Legacy Collection. Taking a similar approach to some of its IP on mobile devices could work well, too, especially for a publisher struggling to cope with the modern marketplace.

Mobile is simply the way of the future, and everyone from casual game developers to AAA publishers to social casinos are competing to get a piece of the action. Online hub Gala Casino has expanded its own mobile offerings by providing a wider variety of gameplay styles and improved interactivity. The latter is especially evident through the use of live dealers, which creates a more immersive experience that can still be played on the go. Considering that Superdata estimates social casino revenue for 2015 was $3.4 billion, it’s not hard to see why companies that once relied on arcades and consoles are looking to the market as a vital revenue stream.

With potentially billions of dollars at stake in the market, a gaming company would have to be crazy not to have products available for mobile. When it comes to Nintendo and Capcom, all we can say is that it’s about time!

Ragnarok: Heroes of Midgard could use some Godly help (Review)

Overview

Ragnarok: Heroes of Midgard is a free-to-play card collecting/RPG game that has a lot of potential, but also a lot of faults.

Developer: OmegaGamesLLC

Cost: Free (with micro-transactions and ads)

Impressions

Ragnarok: Heroes of Midgard is an interesting game, to say the least. It’s a sort of card game/RPG hybrid with characters based off of Norse mythology and fantasy. The game features card collecting, exploration and battling with a team of characters – sounds great, right? Unfortunately, Ragnarok doesn’t exactly do any of these things in an outstanding way.

The story of the game is essentially Loki, the Norse god of Mischief, is up to no good and you need to stop his evil deeds across the realms of Asgard. The game takes some liberties with Norse lore, but it isn’t the worst premise.

The game is similar in style to other popular mobile games like Brave Frontier, where you collect characters of varying rarity and power, put them in a team, and fight in automatic battles. Ragnarok uses cards instead of characters, with admittedly nice art on them, which you collect from the field of battle and from the environment. You can summon cards using in-game currency and real money, as well as upgrade and fuse them together to get more powerful units. Once you get the cards, however, the game takes a sharp drop in fun.

Where a game like Brave Frontier has Final Fantasy-style animated battles with interesting effects and some degree of interactivity, Ragnarok does not. Battles in Ragnarok boil down to two parties bumping into each other with little to no animation, and just some numbers popping up.

The battles last about 2-10 seconds at most, and sometimes you don’t even know what happened until the win/loss screen appears. I wish they had sprung for animations, or added some strategy to the mix, letting you pick which cards attack when, or maybe add some ability to launch special attacks. The game just doesn’t give the player much to do besides tap one button and watch.

The same can be said of exploration, which consists of tapping the “explore” button and watching a little animation over and over until something happens. Occasionally a battle will crop up, or a cut-scene detailing the story will occur, but they are not very frequent, making exploration become tedious at times.

There are other modes to play as well, including an arena mode, where you can battle your party against others. A guild feature is also available, in which you can create and join teams with other players or friends. These modes are fine, but the arena is just more of the same boring battles.

Also, the app has a weird issue where it installs two different icons. Worst of all, one works and the other doesn’t. Confusing and frustrating for sure.

Conclusion

Overall, I was disappointed with Ragnarok: Heroes of Midgard. It has a lot of promise and a bunch of content to work with, but the gameplay itself, coupled with the bevy of superior games available in the same genre for the same price, make this game a hard sell. If you’re looking for a decent game to pick up and play for a time waster, or if you need that collectible free-to-play card game/RPG fix, you could certainly do worse, but also a lot better.

Download and install Ragnarok: Heroes of Midgard from the Google Play Store.

EC Technology Bluetooth 4.0 Speaker: Rock out on a budget (Review)

Overview

We all love getting things at a value and getting good quality out of it. EC Technology has worked tirelessly manufacturing products that provide its global customers with high quality products at budget friendly prices. They have stayed true to that core value with its Bluetooth speaker they offer in its Amazon store for just $24.99.

In the box

  • Bluetooth speaker
  • Instruction manual
  • microUSB cable
  • 3.5 mm audio cable

Design

The EC Tech Bluetooth speaker is one lustrous cubed device that measures in at three inches tall, with a width of two and a half inches wide, and is just heavy enough to feel like a paper weight. Yet, it’s still lightweight and still portable. The top of the speaker is made of black grated plastic, where the power button that also serves as an answer button rounds out the top. While playing music, the built in blue lights, flash making for one beautiful experience.

ECBluetooth

The body is made of a chrome like shiny plastic that you can see your reflection in. You can’t do your makeup in it, but it’s delightful to look at. The one downside is the speaker is a fingerprint magnet, but it doesn’t detract from its great looks.

Around the back is where the two skip buttons reside. If you long press them you control the volume. There is also a microUSB slot for charging, and located to the right of that is a 3.5 mm port for devices that don’t have Bluetooth.

Performance

The speaker volume is modest, the levels are balanced well, and they have an enhanced bass sound. To put it into perspective, one of my favorite songs to test with is Too Close by Next. In my book, a speaker sounds great if it can play my favorite song. The EC Tech Bluetooth speaker had me singing along with the song and it passed my sound test with flying colors. I wouldn’t recommend taking it to the lake on a Saturday, but setting it on your desk at work or perhaps next to your porch swing while reading a good book and drinking a glass of sweet tea would be perfect. It simply doesn’t have the power to be an outdoor speaker.

ECBluetooth2

The EC Technology speaker has remarkable Bluetooth capabilities. You can go up to 30 feet away and through walls you can still reach the speaker. It does have a 3.5 mm audio cable input, but what’s the point if the Bluetooth doesn’t work? Since it has Bluetooth that means you can also make calls from your Android or iOS mobile device. On the receiving end you can hear clearly, however on the receiver’s end, they do have a hard time hearing me if I’m not right up on it.

This speaker has an acceptable battery life. You can easily get six to seven hours of play time, which is great for a work day. If you do need to recharge, it only takes about two hours and you’re ready to go again.

Conclusion

There are a lot of wireless speakers out there. It’s all about getting the biggest bang for your buck. EC Technology is dedicated to that very thing, and has provided a good product for a good price. It’s easy to operate, and easy to hook up. A satisfying bluetooth speaker for $25 is hard to beat.

Which of the Moto Mods appeal to you?

1

Earlier today, Lenovo announced the Moto Z and the Moto Z Force, two flagship level phones looking to redefine what is means to be modular for a smartphone. Aside from the high-end hardware offered in these phones, the biggest feature Lenovo touted was the ability to snap-on different back plates called Moto Mods that allow for different styles and functionality for the phone. “Snapping is the new flipping.” according to Motorola. The Moto Mods attach to the new Moto phones via strong magnetic pins located on the lower back of the device and the mods themselves.

motomodsMagnets

Lenovo announced four Moto Mods to be available first with more coming in the future from third-party companies. They even announced an award of $1 million dollars to any company that comes up with the best Moto Mod by May 31st, 2017.

The first of these mods is the JBL SoundBoost Speaker, providing loud, stereo sound right at the palm of your hands, with 3W per speaker totaling 6W . This mod also includes a built-in kickstand and extra battery (1000 mAh) that supposedly adds 10 hours of additional battery life. The SoundBoost mod weighs 145 grams. JBL has an impressive array of speakers already and has earned a reputation of selling very high-quality Bluetooth speaker sets.

Next up is the Moto Insta-Share Projector. This one was built in-house by Motorola, and with a quick snap onto the Moto Z allows the phone to project its screen up to 70 inches on a flat surface. It includes a kick-stand and 1100 mAh of battery life for an extra one hour of projecting. The mod weighs 120 grams and projects at 854×480 WVGA resolution with 50 lumens nominal brightness.

null

The third Moto Mod is the Incipio offGRID Power Pack, giving the Moto Z up to 22 hours of extra battery life without adding too much bulk. The pack charges the Moto Z at a rate of 4-6W depending on the battery level. There’s a wireless changing (85 grams) and a non-wireless charging option (79 grams) of this mod. Each option can be chosen from black, white, Kate Spade New York, and TUMI designs.

The final official Moto Mod for the Moto Z is the Style Shell, which is basically a more advanced version of a swappable back cover. These different style back covers, like the other mods, magnetically seal to the phone, allowing for seamless and effortless switching of styles. These styles include real wood, leather, different fabrics, and more.

WoodOptions

Non_WoodOptions

All-in-all, Lenovo has impressed me with Moto Mods. While JBL’s Sound Boost system seems too bulky to keep on your phone all the time, it will definitely come in handy for a camp-out or even hanging out in your room. Motorola’s Insta-Share Projector is truly a unique device, and I can definitely see myself using it on the ceiling of my room for Netflix as I doze off. Incipio’s battery mod looks to be the most popular mod because of it’s slim size and solid amount of battery life. Because the Moto Z is so slim already, adding this battery mod still won’t make this phone bulky overall.

These mods, along with the Moto Z, will be exclusive to Verizon for a few months then sold unlocked. Which one of these has caught your interest?

ilumi Bluetooth Smartbulb: Add some color to your lights

When it comes to technology in our homes, one of the last things we probably think of is our light bulbs. I imagine that most people don’t even think about light bulbs at all until one goes out. However, there is an entire selection of bulbs that go far beyond simply lighting up our homes. Some of these light bulbs were created for pure fun while others are meant to add another level of security. Sitting right in the middle of those bulbs is the ilumi Bluetooth Smartbulb.

Design

The ilumi Bluetooth Smartbulb looks almost like any other light bulb except for the fact that it is built much sturdier. The body of the bulb is completely metal which gives the bulb a nice weight. The dome where the light shines through is made of translucent plastic, but even that feels sturdy. The overall feel of the ilumi Smartbulb is simple but elegant. It is understated and blends in, which is exactly what a light bulb should do.

ilumi Smartbulb and box

That being said, the design does lend itself to some faults. While using the ilumi Smartbulb, it has gotten extremely hot due to the metal body. If something were to happen and you needed to remove the ilumi from a light socket, you will get burned if you attempt to hold it from the sides.

I am not sure if this problem would have been fixed with a plastic body, but I do know that the plastic dome does not get nearly as hot as the rest of the bulb. Even after sitting on my desk for 10 minutes after being taken out of my lamp, the ilumi is still too hot to touch. I would definitely recommend using ilumi Smartbulbs in places they will not be accidentally touched.

Setup

Groups (FILEminimizer)ilumi makes its bulbs extremely straightforward to set up. After downloading the ilumi app from the Play Store, all you need to do is create an account to get started. After putting your ilumi into a light fixture and turning on your phone’s Bluetooth, you should see your bulb appear in the menu.

From there, you can begin to customize your bulb to your liking. You can create Groups to control multiple bulbs at the same time, which can be useful if you have several ilumi Smartbulbs in one room. Once you have placed your bulbs into a group, you are ready to explore the numerous features in the ilumi app.

Features

Color Wheel (FILEminimizer)The ilumi app is full of features, and we will touch briefly on the majority of them. Controlling your bulbs through Groups is a fairly straightforward process. After selecting the group you want to control, you are given a slider for brightness, several preselected color choices, and an RGB color wheel for fine tuning the color and tint of your lights.

Moving on from basic bulb control, there is a section labeled Experiences that contain several features for your ilumi. Rise and Shine is one of my favorite features because you can set it to begin at a certain time, and it will mimic a sunrise to gently wake you up from your sleep. You can change things like the time and days it is active, the duration of the sunrise, and even the type of sunrise.

Music Sync is one of those features that sounds super fun but is actually disappointing. In theory, activating it should cause your ilumi to pulse and change color to the music you are listening to. Unfortunately, I never found that to be the case. My ilumi always seemed to be confused by the music I listened to because it would never change with the beat. Perhaps the effect is best seen in a room with multiple bulbs at the same time, but I found it to be unusable with a single bulb.

Scene Scheduler is useful if you have a fairly structured schedule because it allows you to have your ilumi Smartbulbs change at certain times and on certain days. You can create different Scenes, which are basically preset settings for your ilumi, and schedule them to run at a certain time. This can be useful for those who return home at a specific time because they can have their lights turn on before they get home.

Experiences (FILEminimizer)Vacation is one of the security features built into the ilumi app. Activating it will make you ilumi Smartbulbs turn on and off at random times to simulate you being home. This can be useful to ward off would be criminals or even just pesky neighborhood kids. If you are planning on taking advantage of this feature, I would recommend having several ilumi bulbs throughout your house because the effect is not convincing when only one light turns on and off.

Circadian is a feature meant to help you fall asleep easier. Having this feature enabled will cause your ilumi bulbs to change color throughout the day to mimic the Sun’s natural movement and color. In theory, this should help you get to sleep, but like many of the features in the app, it is probably more useful if you have more than one ilumi Smartbulb.

Torch, like Music Sense, should be an amazing feature but suffers from poor usability. Torch is meant to use your ilumi Smartbulbs as flashlights by turning them on as you get close to them. This way you can find your way around your house at night without having to turn on every light. Unfortunately, I found that it rarely worked with my single bulb. Perhaps it would have worked better with multiple ilumi bulbs, but I am skeptical.

ilumi Smartbulb blue

Simon lets you play a fairly basic game of Simon Says with your ilumi Smartbulb. Even the hardest mode is not extremely challenging, but I imagine that children would have a blast playing it.

The last feature is called Shake, and it allows you to set times when shaking your phone will turn on certain ilumi Smartbulbs. I found this to be much more useful than Torch because I could just shake my phone (which is right next to my bed) if I needed to get out of bed at night, and my lamp would turn on.

Usage

I have been using the ilumi Smartbulb in the lamp in my room for a while now, and I have to say that it is a cool piece of technology. As far as being used for a light bulb, the ilumi is fairly average. It does not get extremely bright, but it is bright enough for most any task. The amount of colors to choose from is incredible and truly allows you to make your house your own.

ilumi green

Since the ilumi is controlled by Bluetooth instead of over WiFi, you are more limited in your ability to control it versus other smartbulbs like the Philips Hue. You must be in fairly close proximity to your bulbs to control them compared to being able to access WiFi connected ones from anywhere.

This limited reach also expands into the security side of smartbulbs. While the ilumi Smartbulb has a few security features such as Vacation mode, the fact that you cannot control your lights from far away means that you cannot activate this mode if you forgot before leaving your house. If the price of the ilumi Smartbulb were less than the price of comparable bulbs from the Philips Hue set, I could see a reason to purchase the ilumi bulbs over WiFi connected bulbs. However at a regular price of $60, I cannot see any reason to purchase an ilumi Smartbulb over a bulb controlled over WiFi.

Conclusion

Although the ilumi Bluetooth Smartbulb is a well-built bulb with several useful features, I believe that it is competing with better bulbs at its current price point. If you do not want to have your bulbs connected over WiFi, then I would strongly recommend the ilumi Smartbulbs. You can purchase the ilumi Bluetooth Smartbulb from Amazon on sale for only $45!

Facebook introduces 360 photos for its users

0

After nearly a decade of enabling people all around the world to share photos, Facebook has announced a new addition: 360 photos.

Back in September, Facebook had previously allowed users to upload 360 videos. You need a special set of cameras in order to record every angle of a scene at once, but you don’t need any special equipment to shoot a 360 photo save for the phone that is probably already in your hand.

To start, just take a 360 photo using a special app, or even shoot a panorama using your phone’s camera app, and upload it to Facebook like a regular photo. Once it has finished uploading, the service will automatically convert it to an immersive experience.

gear-360_feature_video

It’s easy to figure out which photos are 360. As you’re scrolling, you’ll notice a 360 degree photo start moving around and responding to your phone’s movement. But there’s also a special compass icon in the upper right corner of the photo. On your phone, simply tap the photo and move around to experience the entire photo. On the desktop you’ll have to click and drag the photo around.

There are already amazing 360 photos out there, including a photo of the International Space Station thanks to NASA, where you can look around the interior as if you were actually there.

If you happen to have a Facebook-sponsored Samsung Gear VR headset, you can view 360 photos in virtual reality to make the experience even more immersive. 360 photos are available today via the web and app versions, and over the next few days users will be able to upload their own 360 photos.

There is even a Facebook 360 Community group to see of the the 360 goodies.

IFTTT: A quick-start guide

IFTTT, or IF as it’s now known, is a popular app for automating actions and streamlining your day. It works with almost every app, smart device, and phone feature you can think of, and allows them to communicate with each other to achieve some pretty cool results. Want your wifi and Bluetooth to toggle when you leave home or work? Want your lights to turn on when you arrive, or your Tweets to auto-post to Facebook? All of this and more can be done with IF. If you’re new to IF then it can all seem a bit daunting, but here’s a few tricks and tips to get you started.

Getting started:

First things first, you want to make an account so you can save recipes and share your own creations. The easiest method is to use Facebook, as it’s quick and painless, and doesn’t share any info with your Facebook. Once you get that done, you’re ready to start proper.

Once you have your account, you should start by linking IF with all of the apps and devices you want to control. Smart home devices like your lights, door locks and security cameras should all connect with IF, and even the Amazon Echo, and Google Now can use IF. These connections to the IF app are called “Channels” and are usually very simple to set. Most apps and smart devices will have a webpage or other quick way to authenticate and link to the IF app, and it’s very straightforward on how to connect them. IF also provides a handy list of all compatible channels in the menu, so if you ever get curious when buying a device or downloading a new app, IF will tell you which ones work. Once you have linked all of your desired apps and channels, it’s recipe time.

Get cookin’:

Recipes are the main focus of IF. All of IF’s app interactions are called “recipes” and are essentially comprised of “trigger channels” and “action channels.” The trigger channels are the catalyst, and the action channels are the result of the trigger. Making one for yourself is simple enough, but luckily IF has a robust collection of recipes all ready to go, made by the community and by app developers and product designers as well. You can search by app to find one you need and just turn it on right there. You can also edit them to suit your needs, in case they don’t do exactly what you want of them.

Creating your own recipe is simple as well, you just start with a trigger action like say, “When I post to Facebook” or “When I enter/leave a certain area.” These are your triggers, and there are many of them. Once you have the trigger, you chose the corresponding action, like “Turn lights on/off” or “make this picture my wallpaper.” Have both actions set and customized to your liking? Click save and you’ve successfully made a recipe in IF. When you’re feeling particularly proud of your creation, you can share it to the IF community for someone else to enjoy.

Here are some quick tips for using IF:

  • Don’t be afraid to explore, you never know what handy recipe may be there to make your life simpler.
  • Use IF to keep organized, with actions to make lists, and send them to Google Drive and Dropbox so you are always on top of things.
  • Use the Tasker or Commandr apps for even deeper customization and automation tools including custom voice commands and gestures.
  • IF can be great for weather and notifications, pinging your smart lights or smartwatch when the weather changes, or you get an email.
  • If you aren’t sure that a recipe has triggered, have it send you an alert when it does, so you’re aware of all the actions that occur throughout your day.

Also, don’t forget to check out the DO apps, from the makers of IF. DO apps are a bunch of action buttons and functions that you customize to do whatever you want when pressed or used. They can be handy for one handed control and quick actions on the go.

IF is one of the most powerful and useful apps you can have on your device, and once you get it, you’ll wonder what you did without it.

Download IF from the Google Play store
