Rumor Roundup: new Nexus launcher, Android security features, and T-Mobile’s big sale

0

Welcome back to another Rumor Roundup post. We aim to keep you informed about all the rumors out there about Android, phones, and accessories. Today we’re taking a look at rumors regarding a new launcher that may ship with Google’s latest Nexus devices, a new Android feature to make your devices more secure, and a big new sale at T-Mobile that’ll save you hundreds!

New Nexus Look

The wonderful folks over at AndroidPolice have received some new information about Google’s newest launcher. As you may know, Google released the Google Now Launcher into the Play Store to save us from non-stock Android launchers that come on phones these days. Now, it seems, that Google will release a new launcher on its next Nexus phones, codenamed Marlin and Sailfish.

The launcher is headlined by the lack of an app tray icon. Don’t fret, the app tray isn’t going away just yet. You’ll still be able to access it from a swipe up from the frosted glass section of the screen, commonly referred to the dock, or by tapping the arrow. You’ll close the app tray by swiping down anywhere besides the notification tray or navigation buttons. This seems like an interesting implementation and we’d bet that this stays only on Nexus phones for the future. Nexus owners are a little more hardcore about their devices and there would be a learning curve for average users.

We’re also treated to a new Google Now widget. The Google Search Widget that you’re used to seeing at the top of your screen is now gone, replaces by a Google Now logo and a time and date widget that cannot be manipulated.

A quick tap on the Google Now logo reveals a search bar and a swipe to the left reveals the Google Now screen that you’re used to seeing to the left of your default home screen page. AndroidPolice goes on to speculate that Google Assistant will be playing a big part in the new launcher, but that has yet to be seen (or leaked).

Android’s new security feature

Google has always been security conscious with features like 2-Step Verification and Single Sign-in, and now the search giant is adding another security feature into Android. Users will now be notified when someone using their login credentials enters them into a new device for the first time.

image02

If the activity looks suspicious, users will be able to quickly review the event to find out what device was added, what location it was added from and other information. In the event of an unauthorized login, users can instantly secure their account.

T-Mobile’s big sale

If you’re looking to switch carriers soon, T-Mobile is about to launch a sale that may interest you. Tmonews is reporting that starting tomorrow, August 3, you’ll be able to pick up a Samsung Galaxy S7 (review here), Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (review here), or Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (review here) for $200 off when you switch to the Uncarrier.

tmogs7note5offerleak

There are, however, some restrictions. You must switch to the service from another carrier and port your number, you must purchase a qualifying plan (10GB or more of data a month), and you must purchase the phones on an Equipment Installment Plan (EIP).

These aren’t the newest phones on the market, but they are some of the best. If you’re not into paying $700+ for a phone, you may want to consider this deal.

That wraps up this edition of Rumor Roundup. Let us know down in the comments what you’re most excited for, the new Nexus launcher, Android’s newest security features, or T-Mobile’s Samsung Sale.

Samsung unpacks the Galaxy Note 7

0

Today at events in New York, London, and Brazil, Samsung finally introduced the oft-leaked Samsung Galaxy Note 7. The newest Note will skip the number 6, going straight from the Note 5 to the Note 7 to keep its naming pattern in line with the Samsung Galaxy S lineup released earlier in the year.

  • Processor: Snapdragon 820 (Quad Core (2.15GHz Dual + 1.6GHz Dual)
  • Storage: 64GB
  • Memory: 4GB
  • Display: 2560 x 1440p dual-curved 5.7″ AMOLED
  • Camera: Rear: Dual Pixel 12MP OIS (F1.7) , Front: 5MP (F1.7)
  • Battery: 3,500mAh, Fast Charging (wired and wireless)
  • Connectivity: WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (2.4/5GHz), MU-MIMO(2×2) 620Mbps,
    Bluetooth® v 4.2 LE, ANT+, USB Type-C, NFC,
    Location (GPS, Glonass, Beidou)
  • Sensors: Barometer, Fingerprint Sensor, Gyro Sensor, Geomagnetic Sensor, Hall Sensor, HR Sensor, Iris Sensor, Proximity Sensor, RGB Light Sensor

Samsung made special mention of the new Iris Scanner in the Note 7. DJ Kohn, Samsung’s Mobile Chief remarked that “Parents will be happy because it will keep their kid’s phone safe and kids will be happy because it keeps their phones safe from their parents.”

The evolution of the Note has been five years in the making, but you wouldn’t be remiss if you confused the Note 5 and Note 7 based on physical appearance alone. The Note 7 will retain many of the physical aspects of previous Notes, but the difference lays in the dual-curved display and back, much like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. Covering that dual-curved display is new Gorilla Glass 5.

The S-Pen, one of the defining features that sets the Note apart from other phablets, is also getting new features. Samsung Notes will be a single streamlined app to access all of the S-Pen features. You can quickly take notes on the screen (even when it’s turned off) and pin it to your Always on Display to remind you to send that email when you get back to your desk. Samsung reduced the diameter of the S-Pen by 50% and made it more receptive to pressure to give it a more natural feeling while drawing or sketching.

The Galaxy Note 7 will pick up water resistance, just like the Galaxy S7, but what is often overlooked is the water resistance of the S-Pen. It will now have an IP 68 rating which will allow it to survive in up to five feet of water.

High Dynamic Range, or HDR, will now be supported, not only in the Note 7’s camera but also within the Note 7’s display. Samsung leveraged its television chips to create a new chip and driver to allow the Note 7’s display to be even more power efficient while displaying HDR content.

The same camera that can be found in the Samsung Galaxy S7 will be in the Note 7. If you’re using that camera to store a ton of 4K videos you’ll be happy to hear that the Note 7’s base storage is now 64GB, up from 32GB on the Note 5. You can also expand that storage with a 256GB microSD card. To help keep all of that storage backed up, each Note 7 owner will receive 15GB of storage in Samsung’s new cloud service.

02_Galaxy Note7_black

Samsung made sure to point out that it’s placing the biggest battery it’s ever put in a Note before in the Note 7 (3500mAh), but it’s still 100mAh smaller than the battery in the S7 Edge (3600 mAh) which has a smaller display (5.5″ vs. 5.7″). Also included with the Note 7 is quick wireless charging, USB type-C, and a USB micro B to USB type C adapter.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will be available worldwide on August 19. Pre-orders for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon will begin August 3. U.S. Cellular will kick off its pre-orders August 4.  In addition to carrier stores, you’ll be able to pick up the Note 7 in Samsung Experience centers at Best Buy, Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, Car Toys, Sam’s Club, Target, and Walmart. If you buy soon you will qualify for a free Samsung Gear 2 or 256GB micro SD card!

Instagram wants to replace Snapchat with its new update

1

Instagram today announced a new feature to its app, dubbed “Instagram Stories”. The update, automatically pushed from its servers, aims to offer a place for users to share content – without overposting on their feed.

Somewhat similar to Snapchat’s Story sharing, users can post pictures and videos into a dedicated place that can be seen by anyone who visits your account. If your account is private, only your followers may view it. One may also block a person from accessing their stories regardless if they’re a follower. They disappear after 24 hours.

tumblr_inline_ob956rLUx01svf3j7_540

To spice it up, there’s also a built in editor which enables you to draw with different color pens and slap stickers onto your photos. Sounds familiar?

tumblr_inline_ob956c82Ew1svf3j7_540

To view someone’s story, just tap on their profile photo. It’s easy to view stories at your own pace: tap to go back and forward or swipe to jump to another person’s story. If you want to comment on something you see, you can tap and send a private message to that person on Instagram Direct. Unlike regular posts, there are no likes or public comments.

It appears as Instagram just turned up the heat on the social media war. The Stories feature is now live and can be used by anyone using Instagram.

Ishtar Commander is a Destiny player’s best friend (App Review)

You wake up in the early 2700s, long, long after the golden age, the arrival of the fallen and the collapse. You’re greeted by your ghost who informs you that he’s been looking for you for a long time. You look around to find yourself in fallen territory surrounded by nothing but destruction. You have to make it to the wall to get to safety….

And that’s how your journey begins. From that point, you become a guardian of the last city on Earth. Protected by the traveler and bathed in light, the Tower sits above the city as a symbol of hope of what we may be again, one day. Throughout your missions, you begin to accumulate new weapons, new armor, vehicles, shaders, and emblems. You can only carry so much, so the others must remain in your Vault or be deleted.

This is where Ishtar Commander comes in.

In late-game Destiny you’re more than likely running three characters, a combination of Warlocks, Hunters, and Titans (with their tiny little T-Rex arms). Moving guns, gear, and ghosts between characters can be accomplished at the Tower with the Vault, but that’s a slow and painful process.

Usage

When you boot up Ishtar Commander (the app name comes from a location in the game) you’re greeted with a login screen for either your Xbox Live or PlayStation Network account. The app hooks directly into Bungie’s (the creator of Destiny) system to move items around. There are no fancy parlor tricks that leave your items at risk of being lost.

Ishtar Commander WeaponsYou’re able to move between your three characters and the Vault with simple swipes to the left and the right. The top of the screen lists which character you’re currently viewing and at the bottom, you can click on tabs for Weapons, Armor, Inventory, and Progress. Weapons and Armor are pretty self-explanatory. Inventory covers everything in your Materials and Consumables list in Destiny, as well as Emblems, Shaders Vehicles, Sparrow Horns, Ships, and Emotes. It’s your “catch-all” screen if you will.

In my opinion, where the real power of Ishtar Commander lays is the ability to move things in and out of your Vault and in between character at a moment’s notice. I routinely run the raid with three different characters and use specific weapons during the raid. If I were to have to run to the Tower every time I wanted to move weapons it would take much, much longer.

Another really important feature within Ishtar Commander is the ability to save loadouts. There are many different activities in Destiny and everyone has their preferred weapons for things like the Crucible, the Raid, or Heroic Strikes. Each activity can have its own separate loadout saved for quickly moving weapons and gear over quickly so you can jump into games as fast as possible. You can also hit “maximize light level” to pop your light level up as high as possible for engram decrypting purposes.

Ishtar Commander Creating LoadoutIshtar Commander Loadouts

Within the settings you can turn on turn on settings for light level, armor grades (for you tier 12 chasers), and hidden stats.

Everything works flawlessly within the app. If you don’t have room to send a weapon to another character, you get a very clear error explaining why. There’s no guesswork. While there have been some issues in the past with functionality, the devs seem to have figured it out recently and we’ve had a long period of silky smooth performance.

Graphics and Sound

With apps that focus on functionality, there is sometimes a letdown in the graphics and sound departments. Luckily, Ishtar Commander avoids any kind of serious issues.

There are very clear sections for each type of weapon (Primary, Special, Heavy) and the icons for each weapon are large enough to easily tell exactly what you’re selecting. My only gripe is the large amount of space between each section. It seems to just be a waste.

There aren’t many sounds in the apps besides a clip from Destiny during your initial boot-up and some error sounds. The sounds are consistent and not annoying so no issues there.

Conclusion

Destiny tower

I use Ishtar Commander every time I play Destiny. While that isn’t as much as I may like these days, I can usually get in a couple hours with friends during the week and run the raid. Ishtar Commander saves me so much time and frustration. I no longer have to run back to the Tower and switch between characters to move guns, materials, and consumables.

The devs have been excellent communicating with the community and pushing constant updates. When something breaks, it’s immediately addressed. You rarely see dev support for a free app like this.

If you’d like to pick up Ishtar Commander, you can head over to the Play Store!

Rumor roundup: OnePlus 3, LG V20, Android 7.0 Nougat

2

We’re getting to an exciting time of the year for new phones and technology. The last half of the year will bring new flagships from LG, Samsung, Apple, as well as new releases of Android and iOS.

If you’re in the market for a new device, or just want to keep up on the latest leaks and rumors, this is the post for you. We have information on a new version of the OnePlus 3, LG’s next phablet, and when you’ll be able to get Google’s newest OS!

OnePlus 3 in Gold

The OnePlus 3 is one of the best phones of the year so far (review here). When you factor in price, it may be the best value of any device in 2016, but if you don’t like silver phones you may have passed on it during its initial launch. Well, now you have options.

You can now order a OnePlus 3 in Soft Gold. Gold has been a trend in phones since the iPhone debuted its golden shade a few years ago, and now OnePlus has jumped on the bandwagon. This isn’t a shimmery gold that will catch the eye, but an understated tone that looks luxurious without looking gaudy.

oneplus 3 soft goldmain-back-gold

The OnePlus 3 is powered by a Snapdragon 820 processor and has the distinction of being the first phone released in the United States with 6GB of RAM. It comes standard with 64GB of non-expandable storage, an embedded 3000mAh battery, and a 16MP camera.

If you’re interested in picking up a OnePlus 3 in Soft Gold, you can head over to OnePlus’ website right now and place your order.

LG V20

You may remember the LG V10 from last year. The phablet was LG’s answer to Samsung’s Galaxy Note lineup that releases late in the year. The phone more than matched up to its rival’s specs with 64GB of storage standard, a high-end mobile digital to analog converter (DAC), and one of the best and most versatile cameras on the market. Now, we’re starting to see leaks of the follow-up to the V10, the brand new V20.

READ: The V20 has the chance to redeem LG this year and outshine the Note 7

Our friends over at Engadget are reporting that the LG V20 will be the first phone with Android 7.0 Nougat. This would be pretty notable if true because that means it would beat even Google’s own Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X to the market with the newest software. We’re also hearing that the V20 will employ a dual screen setup and a dual selfie feature, much like its predecessor, the V10.

LG V10 Always On
LG V10 Always On

This news definitely strikes us as odd, although it is worth pointing out that LG has made two Nexus devices with Google at this point so there is a good working relationship there. Whether or not the V20 is the first phone on the market with 7.0 doesn’t matter that much as the Nexus devices will get it pretty close to when the V20 launches, but this would be a departure for Google.

The LG V20 is set to arrive in September.

Android 7.0 Nougat

Our friend Evan Blass, aka EVleaks, is providing us with another of his famous leaks that directly contradicts the news about the LG V20 above. Blass says in a tweet that Android 7.0 Nougat will be launched on August 5th along with the August security update. The update will roll out for the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, and Nexus 6, but not the Nexus 5. We assume the Nexus 9 will also see the update as it was released only 18 months ago and Google has promised two years of software updates.

Since Google has gone to a long, public beta, a lot of the surprises are gone from a new software release, but it’s exciting none-the-less. Nougat will mark another version of the now mature operating system and bring support for the new Project Daydream VR program and updates to Project Tango.

That wraps up our list for today! Which are you most excited for, a new version of the OnePlus 3, a brand-new phablet from LG, or the latest version of Android? Let us know down in the comments what you’re keeping your eye on.

10.8-inch Chuwi Vi10 Plus runs Remix OS 2.0 and is now available

1

As we look ahead to the next season of school (yes already), some of us are hoping to pick up some tech to make us more productive. For a few people this means a new smartphone. For others, it could mean a tablet. And for even others, this means a notebook/tablet hybrid device.

Vi10 Plus - 1

One such device that’s only just been made available, the Chuwi Vi10 Plus, features a 10.8-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) display, and runs Remix OS 2.0. As sort of a blend of both Android (5.1) and Windows 10, it  gives users added productivity and flexibility by allowing for both ecosystems.

In terms of hardware, the Chuwi Vi10 Plus comes in two versions: 2GB RAM with 32GB storage, and 4GB RAM with 64GB storage. Regardless of which model you opt for you’ll find an Intel Atom Cherry Trail X5 processor, and an 8400mAh battery.

Vi10Plus_a1_03As for other specs, the unit comes with a pair of 2-megapixel cameras, USB Type-C port, and support for a detachable docking (magnetic) keyboard. In the area of ports, the device offers up microHDMI output, microUSB, and microSD, too. Additionally, the Vi10 Plus supports Chuwi’s HiPen H2 Stylus. Both the keyboard and stylus are sold separately.

Priced to move, the 2GB model is only $169 while the 4GB carries a slightly higher $239 tag. For more information on the Chuwi Vi10 Plus, be sure to check out Chuwi’s website.

We checked Gearbest and found the 2GB/32GB version for only $159.99 but we’re not sure how long that will last.

AT&T to offer Trek 2 tablet with a super affordable price

0

In case you are not satisfied with the current range of budget tablets, AT&T has unveiled the successor to the original Trek tablet, the Trek 2 HD. The device is built with budget in mind and offers a decent set of specs for what you pay.

Starting August 5, the Trek 2 HD will be available online and in stores nationwide for $0.99 with a two-year agreement, or on an AT&T Installment Plan for $7.50 per month for
20 months when you have eligible service.

The tablet features Dolby Audio™ speakers, a 4,600mAh battery and an unspecified Qualcomm Snapdragon Octa-Core processor. Expandable storage aids the 16GB on-board storage, while a 5MP shooter sits on the front and back.

trek_2_tablet_946x432

“The Trek 2 HD is designed specifically with entertainment in mind, so you can enjoy your favorite video content when you’re on-the-go,” said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president, Device and Network Services Marketing, AT&T. “Whether you’re a regular traveler with extra time on your hands for a TV show, or you want to see the latest sports highlights from the comfort of your couch, the Trek 2 HD provides a high quality video experience for less than a dollar with a two-year agreement.”

Roundup: Spigen slim cases for the HTC 10

The HTC 10 is sexy smartphone. If you’re keen on keeping that slick metal casing pristine, then you must cover it up. Like many smartphone enthusiasts, I’m also not a fan of throwing a plastic case on top of a beautiful design. Fortunately, Spigen has a good variety of options that attempt to not be too invasive. Here are a couple of the slimmer cases the company offers that might just tickle your fancy.

Thin Fit Cases

Spigen’s Thin Fit cases are the slimmest ones in its lineup. They’re more your typical snap-on kind of case, in which you sacrifice some protection for slimness (also meaning that it’s super easy to install and remove). Strangely, Spigen only offers two variants: Gunmetal and…Mint. Not sure why there’s not a wider range of colors, but I figure that the Gunmetal model should set well with most people. Let’s check that out first.

Gunmetal Thin Fit Case

I find the Gunmetal case to be the most interesting out of the bunch, because of the choice of material and color. In practice, it’s just a hard, snap-on case, but the grippy finish puts it above the rest. It’s somewhat rubbery and sticky to the touch (not in a bad way), which makes handling leaps and bounds better than with the phone’s bare surface. The case is reluctant to leave your hand.

Additionally, the styling is a big plus. It’s superbly metallic in appearance, perfectly complimenting the HTC 10’s fancy build. On-lookers should be hard-pressed to tell that they’re not looking at a charcoal version of the phone. It even mimics the HTC 10’s exaggerated chamfer that’s along the rear perimeter.

Being that these are snap-on cases, the top and bottom of the phone are exposed. The sides are pretty robust, though. They completely wrap around and leave a substantial lip on each side of the front. You should have no worry laying the phone face down on a table.

A slight concern I noticed is that the camera and back-facing microphone cutouts don’t line up perfectly.

I’d expect that such an established case-maker would have impeccable cutouts. Tsk tsk, Spigen.

Spigen Thin Fit Gunmetal Case link

Mint Thin Fit Case

The shape and fit of the Mint Thin Fit variant is the same as the Gunmetal. But the material has a more typical hard plastic finish. It’s nicely matte, and despite being smooth, there’s still plenty of grip. But that color…

I’m just not a fan, and while it looks a little better in person than the promo pics (not as bright), it’s still an eyeful of pale green. But I won’t dwell further on the color, it’s subjective. The Mint Thin Fit case offers the same amount of protection as its brother. But I found the cutouts to be better aligned on my Mint model. Maybe I got a bad Gunmetal unit.

Spigen Thin Fit Mint Case link

Crystal Shell Case

Spigen’s Crystal Shell case is a good alternative to the Thin Fit. You get a bit better protection, but while there’s more substance to the case, the fact that it’s completely clear allows the phone’s design to still be relevant. The case’s build is a combination of hard plastic (back cover) and flexible TPU material (around all sides).

This allows the Crystal Shell case to have a Military Grade protection rating for your phone (MIL-STD 810G). The case’s thickness slightly raises above the camera module and front glass. This is probably the best balance of protection and slimness.

There are cutouts on the top and bottom of the phone for all the ports. The power and volume buttons aren’t exposed; there’s matching TPU inserts that push into the actual buttons. It works just fine.

Spigen Crystal Shell Case link

Final Thoughts

Spigen continues to do a great job. It could do better in some areas, but for the most part, these are solid cases. If you care about looks, I strongly suggest that Gunmetal model. I loved it. But I suggest Spigen to look into quality control of those cutouts.

For more info on these cases, or others available, check out Spigen’s HTC product list.

Google adding spam protection in Phone app + how it works

0

Spam callers are annoying, but what may be more annoying is not being able to do something about it. Probably long overdue, Google will now let you take back those moments phone spammers have taken from you. That is, if you use Google’s Phone app. This primarily pertains to Nexus users, as third-party UI’s typically include their own dialer app.

Today, on the Nexus G+ page, it was shared that Google has begun rolling out an update to its Phone app that will grant you the ability to block and report spammer phone numbers. The feature also incorporates a spam detector, which will flag the suspicious number as “Suspected spam caller” or just “Spam”.

07.25_Android_SpamCall

As long as you’re currently using Caller ID in the app, you’ll be able to utilize the spam protection feature. It’s pretty simply to do too. Simply open the phone app, go to Recent calls tab, identify and tap the spam phone number, and select “Block/report spam”. You’ll additionally get the option to “Report call as spam” if you so choose. If you marked a number as spam by mistake, you can identify it as “Not spam” in the same manner.

Are you looking forward to the feature?
