The Blu Vivo 5R is the sixth in the Vivo series of smartphones, which is essentially a mid-range line of devices. To be fair, though, the mid-range pretty much only applies to the hardware that powers the experience; the exterior is quite polished and punches above its weight.
We’ve had a Vivo 5R in our possession for a few days now and have come to really like the look and feel of the phone. Designed with aluminum and curved glass, the handset looks like it would cost at least $50-$75 more than it does. Indeed, this $200 experience has all the trappings of a flagship model yet it’s not too much phone for the average user.
Aside from the outward appearance, a few things we’ve already come to appreciate in the Vivo 5R include the fingerprint reader and Android build. The former is new to the Vivo line while the OS is an updated, more secure, and feature-rich platform.
Let’s face it, it’s not as if the Vivo 5 needed to be refreshed already. Given it’s only eight months old, we would not have been surprised if another 2-4 months went by without a successor. Thankfully, Blu decided the time was right to drop a refresh.
Not only do we get more memory and storage in the Vivo 5R, but users also pick up an extra half-inch of display. There’s a slight trade-off in terms of size, of course; it’s taller than its predecessor and a teeny bit bigger on the other edges. It’s barely taller than the OnePlus 3, but it’s every bit as pocketable and one-hand friendly.
One thing we were glad to see in the Vivo 5R was its $200 price tag. This is the same space that the Vivo 5 occupied so it’s essentially like getting a punch up barely one half year after release. We’re not sure what will happen to the cost of the older sibling, but we’re guessing a price drop is soon in order.
We love the rear placement of the fingerprint sensor as it’s right where your finger tends to rest. It’s the same spot as where you’ll find it on a Nexus 6P or where the volume buttons are for the recent LG G models. Thus far it has been snappy all around. Speaking of snappy, we appreciate that it can also be used to activate the shutter of the camera.
The 3150mAh battery carries over from the Vivo 5, which is a big win in our eyes. More than enough to get users through a day or more of typical tasks, it’s bigger than what most lower-cost phones offer. We might have liked the USB Type-C connector, but not everyone is making the jump yet. But, given Blu has included it in a number of recent models, we were surprised to see the microUSB port.
The nearly stock Android build is present, something we’ve come to appreciate in Blu models. There’s a few apps pre-loaded from the handset maker, but it’s not heavy handed. Aside from McAfee Security and Opera, the only other non-Blu touches are apps from Amazon. If you’re new to Android, you’ll get the near-Nexus software, and is almost exactly what Google intends for users. It’s intuitive, friendly, secure, and smart.
When it comes to cameras, we’re yet-again astonished by what we’re getting out of Blu, especially for the price. To us, it’s getting harder and harder to justify spending more than $400 on a phone. When you look at some of the pictures you can take in a $300 phone like the Pure XR, it’s tough to consider pulling more out of the wallet. The same goes for the Vivo 5R; it’s amazing what you get out of the Sony sensor.
Keeping in mind that we’ve only had the Vivo 5R for just over three days, we’re totally digging it. Having just used the Pure XR for a daily driver over the last few weeks, we expected to feel the difference, literally. We figured it would come across as cheaper in texture or build. We were happy to be proven wrong.
In terms of performance, we’ve not put this one through a battery of daily driver tests. We’re just starting out with the stock experience to see how it goes out of box. Another couple of days and we’ll put on the various accounts and apps to get rolling. Suffice it to say, even though it has less internal hardware power than the recently released Pure XR, it’s negligible for the most part. Again, a few days from now we might sing a different tune, but the octa-core processor with 3GB RAM is plenty for many users.
Kudos to Blu for throwing in the screen protector and rubber protective case on top of the headphones and power cable. It’s a small gesture that saves a little bit of money, but it’s certainly appreciated.

If Google is ever going to make the Nexus lineup- or the Pixel lineup as it is rumored to be called now a major player, it has to be now. Google has made it a point for the last six years to release a reference device to give OEMs and developers an idea of the direction it would like to see the industry head. These new devices introduced new hardware standards (Nexus imprint, USB type-C) and saw to it that almost everyone could have a clean install of Stock Android to test whatever they may be working on.
The Nexus lineup hasn’t always been so popular. It has had its ebbs, like the $650 price tag for the monstrous Nexus 6, and its flows like the fabulous Nexus 5, but it has always been a darling among Android enthusiasts. Where the lineup hasn’t shined, however, is with the general public. There are many reasons for that, but we did see a signal of intent this past year with an aggressive marketing campaign from Google for the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. It does appear that Google is getting more serious about making the Nexus a major player and if it ever wants it to be, this is the year it has to take it to the next level. Here’s why.
The Apple iPhone 7 will be a disappointment
Now, I know what you’re thinking. A writer from a website with “Android” in the name is bashing the iPhone. How original? But, what you need to understand is that I’m as disappointed in the iPhone as anyone else. I love Apple’s hardware and I really wanted the 7 to be a strong contender. Great iPhones breed great Android phones and vice-versa. Plus, I’ve owned every iPhone since the original alongside my Android devices so I enjoy the devices on a personal level as well.
With that said, I do think that the iPhone 7 will be a disappointment this year. Apple didn’t innovate that much, it kept the same design and removed a universally accepted port so it could provide better haptic feedback. I don’t think those things add up to a great device and I’m betting the market agrees with me. Interest and sales will be at an all-time low for the iPhone and this gives Google a good opportunity to convert some folks over to Android. Apple is going to come out huge with the Tenth Anniversary edition of the iPhone so if Google is going to do it, it better be now.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 debacle
We’ve all heard about the Galaxy Note 7 exploding. While most of us applaud Samsung for how it’s handled the recall of the devices so far, it will still continue to be a weight around Samsung’s neck across all product lines. Put yourself in the shoes of a person who doesn’t care that much about their phone. They just want something that will work, look nice and not blow up in their hands as a Note 7 has just done to a six-year-old boy. Samsung may have done the right thing by recalling and replacing all Note 7’s, but this will stick in the memory of consumers for years.
Google MUST capitalize on the vacuum at the top. If consumers aren’t inspired by the iPhone 7 and they don’t feel safe with the Note 7, they will look elsewhere or keep their money in their pocket. Releasing a true flagship Nexus with specs and performance to beat everyone else on the market when there are no real alternatives is a recipe for success.
Huawei is coming. Quickly.
If you’ve followed AndroidGuys.com at all over the last year, you have noticed that we put an emphasis on saving our readers money. One of the biggest ways to do that in our scope of coverage is buying an unlocked device. We love the $300-$500 range where you can get amazing devices like the OnePlus 3, Moto Z Play, and ZTE Axon 7. The most impressive device in that price range might be the Huawei Honor 8 which was just released in the United States.
The Honor 8 has build quality that rivals the Samsung Galaxy S7 while costing about 60% of the price. The software will appeal to both iOS and Android fans in a way few other Android devices do. It’s a completely different phone from everything else being sold in the United States right now.
I have no inside knowledge of Huawei’s plans for the US, but I do know there is a gap it can fill right now with little resistance. At the top, you have Samsung and Apple battling it out for supremacy, while companies like LG, HTC, and Sony try to carve out a slice of the pie. Huawei could very easily come in and take a piece of the high-end market and gobble up the part that the also-rans are fighting for.
Huawei has proven that it can make great high-end phones with the Nexus 6P and now its proving it can produce a compelling option in the mid-range too with the Honor 8. Google better get the jump on it too before it even gets out of the gate.
Google knows what it needs to do. To make the Nexus/Pixel lineup the next great line of phones in consumer’s minds, it must strike while the iron is hot. There has never been a better time to make a dent in the market the way that it can this year.

Blu on Monday revealed the Vivo 5R as yet another smartphone in it’s quickly growing Android-powered portfolio. Priced at a mere $200, the unlocked handset can be paired with AT&T, T-Mobile, and other GSM networks.
Whereas its last model, the Pure XR was aimed at the upper end, the Vivo 5R has the middle range in mind. And, more specifically, it’s somewhat of a refresh of the Vivo 5 which launched only some eight months ago around CES.
Powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the Vivo 5R offers up a 5.5-inch display at 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. Key hardware includes an octa-core processor (MediaTek 6753 1.3GHz) with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. Yes, it seems that 3GB is now considered par for the course in the middle of the pack.
In terms of cameras, the Vivo 5R features a 13-megapixel rear sensor and front-facing 8-megapixel shooter. Rounding things out we find a 3,150mAh battery, microSD card slot for external storage, and a fingerprint sensor located on the rear.

Available in Slate Grey and Lush Gold options, the Vivo 5R is designed with premium materials including aluminum and curved glass. Customers interested in purchasing the phone can go to Amazon or Best Buy; shipping is currently listed as starting from September 21.
The number of tech gadgets I own is getting embarrassingly high. Smartphone(s), tablet, smartwatch, fitness tracker, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speaker, and portable battery are some of the many portable gadgets I own.
Almost all tablets and smartphones come with single port USB chargers, but many accessories do not. The solution is to use the same wall charger while switching out the charging cable if need be. There’s also multi-port chargers which are nice to have, most of which go up to five output ports. The main issue with these desk style chargers is they don’t provide a good way to keep things organized which can lead to a mess.
Even though I live alone, this mess really bothers me and it has bothered me for a long time.
I like to be organized, and I finally broke down and did a search of charging stations that would clean up my bird’s nest of wires. That’s where the UNITEK 10-port charging station comes in to save the day.
Design and Usage
The UNITEK 10-port charging station is a flat charging station with 10 USB ports with each port able to deliver power at 2.4A. The flat charging station is designed with multiple slots to insert fins so you can organize your devices to fit your specific needs. When setting up the dividers, you’ll want to make sure to make them fit as tightly as possible for larger items like my iPad Pro 12.9″. If the dividers are too far apart, the tablet will lean on the plastic divider which will cause it to bend. If it’s set up properly though, it will have no issue with holding it upright. It’s all about physics and torque. The more upright the heavy item is, the less pressure it will put on the fins holding it up.
You can keep the slots narrow to slide in smartphones, batteries or tablets, while leaving wider charging slots for things like wireless headphones and smartwatches. What’s particularly nice about having 10 USB ports to pick from, is the ability to add devices when I make another purchase. The fins are not permanent installations meaning you can reconfigure the setup anytime you want.
There are some of you who are thinking, “Why do I need 10 charging ports when I only have three devices?” The answer is you don’t need 10 charging slots right now, but you may in the future. As technology progresses, more and more products that once required wired connections are now going wireless. In my case, I really need more than five charging ports for my desk.
With a charger of this capacity, if you were to charge 10 devices at a single time, it naturally generates heat during the energy transfer. However, UNITEK planned for that scenario quite well and installed various vents all over the device.
With the adequate ventilation, I never experienced heat concerns, nor is there a need for an active fan to cool the charger. There’s only one input to power this charging station which is nice for keeping my wall outlet free to use for things like a desk lamp, or desktop speakers. The power input is also compatible with 100-240V meaning you can use it worldwide without a converter.
After taking about five minutes to set the charging station up, my desk went from mess to organized and freed up quite a bit of space.

The result speaks for itself. Look how much cleaner my desk is with the UNITEK 10-port charging station. This charging station is also good for families and can be set-up in common areas like the kitchen or living room since the footprint is so small. It’s simply a great way to stay organized while only using one wall outlet.
I feel so much better that my desk is organized, but even better I love not having to unplug and plug devices in, with my limited 5-port charging station I used to deal with before this charger saved the day.
One of the most dangerous things you can do is drive a car. According to the Association for Safe International Road Travel, globally almost 1.3m people die each year from automobile accidents. In the US, there are roughly 37,000 fatalities each year, which totals about 10 deaths per 100,000 people.
If you’ve paid attention to the tech sites lately, you’d know there are Samsung Galaxy Note 7s that catch fire due to faulty batteries. So far there have been roughly 35 incidents out of 2.5m devices, which means driving a car is much more dangerous yet we ignore the statistics when we drive distracted.
Distracted driving, or texting, and not using your smartphone or other mobile devices hands-free, is one of the most dangerous things you probably do every single time you get in a car. Using your smartphone while driving is illegal in almost all states in the US as well as many countries around the globe.
I live in San Diego where the fine for using a phone in the car is $161. In other cities the fines are as low as $20 which is asinine. These fines are not enough to distract many drivers from using their phones which not only endangers themselves and their passengers, but also the innocent drivers who are doing their best to make it home to their loved ones.
The government may not be enough of a deterrent for you to prevent you from using your cell phone, but it’s your responsibility to drive as safely as possible. All it takes is one accident and you could ruin someone else’s life forever.
It’s time you got a cell phone mount for your automobile. If you already have one, then kudos to you. Parents, if you’re reading this and have a young driver in the family, a cell phone mount is an absolute must-have for your loved one.
The GekoGrip mount is designed to attach onto the air vent in your automobile. There is a magnet housed in the front end triangular shaped top piece, with a ball joint connected the four prongs that push onto the vent. The ball joint has a threaded exterior, so you can screw down the nut over it to keep your cell phone mounted in a position that makes your phone visible in a position that is comfortable for you to see.
In order to attach your phone to the magnetic mount, you will need to stick on one of two included metal pieces either on your phone directly, or in between your case and smartphone.
The round metal piece is has an sticky surface on one side and it’s designed for those who go case free. The other rectangular piece, has a felt side to protect your smartphone from scratching when it sits in between your case and smartphone (metal phones like the iPhone are not drawn to magnets since they are made from aluminum so you will need to use one of the metal pieces).
Once installed, which takes a matter of seconds, the magnet has plenty of power to hold the smartphone in place even when it’s upside down. In the picture above, I’m using a relatively large Note 7 and a somewhat rugged Caseology case.
Once in your vehicle, all you have to do is push the four pronged end into the cross section of your vent and then screw down the ball joint.
Once installed in the air vent, which does take a decent amount of force, it stays firmly in place.
Simply hold your phone up to the magnetic portion and the phone sticks very easily. There’s nothing to tighten down, and it’s one of the easiest ways to mount your phone in your automobile. The only downside is your phone will block the air vent. In San Diego, that’s never an issue for me since the weather is pretty consistent and I almost never use heat or A/C. Most other regions though, do experience a wide range in temperatures, so you can leave the phone off the mount until your car has come to the temperature you’re comfortable with before attaching the phone.
If you’re concerned about the phone falling off on its own, don’t worry. I have an off-road suspension on my truck, which is not a smooth ride, especially in California where our roads are riddled with deep pot holes. Not one time did the mount move, or shown signs of letting go of my Note 7.
From opening the box, installation to putting in use, it took no longer than a matter of minutes to add in a safety feature all cars should come standard with these days.

Personally I don’t mind that Google collects my information mainly because it really does help me. I love checking my Google Now cards to see the current weather, stock prices, and relevant news of stuff I am interested in. Plus I don’t really have anything to hide so I don’t see it as a big deal.

In just a few minutes, you can manage the types of data Google collects, update what personal information you share with friends or make public, and adjust the types of ads you would like Google to show you. You can change these settings as often as you want.
The first thing you can do to protect your Google Account is take the Security Checkup. Google built it to help you verify that your recovery information is up to date and that the websites, apps, and devices connected to your account are ones you still use and trust. If anything looks suspicious, you can change your settings or password immediately. The Security Checkup takes just a few minutes, and you can take it as often as you like.
From better commute options in Maps to quicker results in Search, the data it saves with your account can make Google services more useful to you. Using Activity Controls, you can decide what gets associated with your account and pause the collection of specific types of data — like your searches and browsing activity, the places you go, and information from your devices.
In your Ads Settings, you can control ads based on what topics you are interested in. For example, if you use the Ads Personalization settings to tell Google that you like pop music, you might see ads for upcoming releases and shows near you when you are signed in to YouTube.
If you turn off Ads Personalization while you are signed in, it will stop showing you ads related to your interests across Google services as well as websites and apps that partner with Google. If you are signed out, turning off Ads Personalization affects only Google services where ads are shown.

With season two coming to an end next week, now’s the perfect time to binge watch on the first season. It’s ten episodes of mind-bending and smartly written drama that would be at home on AMC or HBO. It’s the best stuff we’ve seen from USA and we’re dying to see where the show goes next. There’s no time like the present to get started on the show that centers around computer hacking, too-big-to-fail corporations, and delicious characters.
Gravity Falls is a great Disney show about two kids, Dipper and Mabel, who are sent to the mysterious and magical town Gravity Falls, Oregon to spend the summer with their great uncle Stan. This show has a huge following and has received some well-deserved praise for the excellent writing and voice work of stars like Kristen Schaal and show creator Alex Hirsch. Gravity Falls has something for the whole family, with classic Disney animation and smart humor that won’t leave parents bored, plus an enticing mystery element that keeps you guessing the whole way through.
Peaky Blinders is a BBC crime drama based upon the exploits of the Peaky Blinders gang, operating in Birmingham, England during the aftermath of World War One. The series was created by Steven Knight and centers around Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, the gang’s leader, and Sam Neill as a detective tasked with the suppression of the gang.
The Wire is the best crime drama ever on television and one of the best shows period. Revolving around a strong cast of surprisingly deep characters, The Wire shows all aspects of the drug trade in Baltimore from the streets all the way up to the Chief of Police. The five seasons of The Wire are almost required viewing.
The West Wing is one of the best political dramas ever created. Originally designed to be a show about the President’s staff, the show follows President Josiah Bartlet and his staff as they navigate low approval numbers and a republican congress while trying to make a difference. The show is excellent written by Aaron Sorkin for the first four seasons and has stand-out performances from John Spencer (Leo McGarry), Rob Lowe (Sam Seaboard), Bradley Whitford (Josh Lyman), Richard Schiff (Toby Zeigler), and Allison Janney (C.J. Craig), as well as POTUS himself, Martin Sheen.
