Google Play Music gets major overhaul, bets on personalization

0

Do you use Google Play Music? Chances are that when it comes to music streaming you prefer services like Spotify, Apple Music or Pandora. But Google hopes to change that. To that end, the search giant has just announced a major overhaul of its music-centric service, claiming it has made it more intelligent and intuitive.

Google wants to help user find the right music for any moment and to do so, it now employs a deeper integration of machine learning technology which allows the service to deliver music based on the users location, time of day or night and current activity. Of course music preferences are factored into the equation.

Google has made its music service a lot smarter. The resigned home screen is touted as the “ultimate personal DJ” due to its ability to learn the users’ patterns in terms of music listening. Just refresh it and see the newly recommended playlists based on musical habits. The service will know what you listen to at 4:00 in the afternoon and deliver similar content accordingly. Google provides some examples like the app playing the “workout playlist” when the user hits the gym or relaxing tracks after a long day at the office.

google-play-music-just-got-betterWhat’s more, you don’t have to worry about losing connection or not having enough data to listen to music. Google has updated the app to include a regularly updated offline playlist constructed based on what the user has been listening to recently.

The Google Play Music app can now be used as a discovery tool as well, since the service delivers new artist recommendations based on the user’s personal history.

It’s interesting to see what Google will recommend to those users who like to listen to black metal to relax and ambient music while they work.

There’s some hope the app will get it right. Due to the support from machine learning systems, Google says users should expect to see the experience evolve overtime. So the more it’s used, the better it becomes. You can access the app on your Google Home smart speaker, a Pixel phone, a Chromecast or a 4K Chromecast Ultra.

google-play-music-old-viewIf you too want to get advantage of Google Play Music, then you should know there’s a $9.99 fee per month to be paid. The company is rolling out the new version of the services this week for Android, iOS and the web.

Competitive services like Spotify also offers something akin in terms of personalized music experience. We’re talking about the “Just For You” weekly playlist, but also about the Discovery Weekly feat.  Now Google is going down the same path in a bid to make the dusty Play Music more attractive.

The Coral Blue Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge’s release may be nearing on T-Mobile

0

Samsung is doing everything it can to stay on top after the Galaxy Note7 scandal. We previously brought you the news of Samsung’s efforts to limit the environmental impact of the returned Note7s and a discount program supposedly coming soon for affected customers.

But in the meantime, Samsung is still trying to promote the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. The devices remain two of the best phones on the market even though they were released eight months ago. Samsung is trying to stave off people getting bored with the S7 Edge by releasing a brand new color- Blue Coral.

You may remember the beautiful new color combination from the Galaxy Note7. It debuted on that device and now that we can no longer get our hands on one, Samsung is making efforts to Note-ify the S7 lineup. We’ve seen software updates to add Note features to the S7 and S7 Edge like porting over the Notes app and adding some edge features only found on the Note. These may have been planned updates, but they took on some special meaning as Samsung looks to try and keep customers from jumping ship to other OEMs.

Also of note in the leak were two more devices added to T-Mobile’s inventory. The SyncUp Drive is a car accessory that connects to your car to give you diagnostic information and creates a WiFi hotspot and the Gear S3 Frontier is a smartwatch from Samsung. Both the devices are listed as New Products alongside the Blue Coral S7 Edge and the Alcatel OneTouch Pop 7 LTE, a previously announced budget tablet.

T-Mobile hasn’t announced when you’ll be able to get your hands on the Bleu Coral Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, but if AT&T’s schedule is any indication, it should be this month. AT&T is already taking pre-orders and lists expected ship dates around November 14. You can also check out our list of where you can pick up a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge if you’re looking for a good deal.

ZTE looking to fill the Nexus void

0

With the launch of the Pixel and Pixel XL a few months ago, Google has also killed the Nexus line. While the Pixel phones stick close to stock Android, the pure Android experience has died alongside the Nexus, leaving a lot of users to regret the decision. Furthermore Google’s new phones boast premium price tags, while the Nexus line was designed to offer the clean Android experience at affordable rates.

Well it seems Chinese device maker ZTE wants to bring the Nexus back from the dead. The company is polling users on its Community Forum, asking them what features they would like to see in a future stock or near-stock Android phone launched under the ZTE banner.

The device maker says one thing is clear: customers want an affordable phone with stock Android onboard and the company wants to give it to them, but the reasons for their preference are mixed, so ZTE is trying to find out what they are.

zte-grand-s3-with-iris-scannerThe poll results reveal the majority of users would like to see a cleaner user interface and skin on a possible Nexus-like ZTE phone. Fans also want quicker updates and longer support. It remains to be seen whether ZTE will actually be taking these suggestions into consideration while building its next-gen phone.

Community users have also been providing suggestions via comments. For example, ZTE could end up following Motorola’s footsteps in making a phone with near stock Android onboard, but focus on bundling the device with useful, everyday features. A proposed feat is one that would enable the user to select a specific amount of battery percentage she/he wants to charge to.

zte-axon-7-8-1-752x490A few months ago, ZTE unveiled the Axon 7 – a device which was well received by the Android community. The phone comes boasting a 5.5-inch QHD display with 2.5 curved glass and takes advantage of a Snapdragon 820 processor in combination with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card slot up to 128GB).

ZTE Axon 7 review: Outstanding with a few faults

The Axon 7 features a 20MP/8MP camera combo and a 3,250 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 under the hood. It’s a good start for ZTE and more impressive phones might be on their way soon.

It seems like ZTE is committed to listening to the voice of the community, so who knows in a short while Android enthusiasts might be treated with a new Nexus, this time from ZTE.

Nixon Mission Android Wear: One of the best smartwatches to date (review)

Smartwatches never really lived up to analyst’s expectations. Many predicted they would be the next major growth market as devices like laptops and tablets lost ground. When the first generation smartwatches were released a couple of years ago, we were left unimpressed with the offerings. Many tech manufacturers jumped head first into the watch industry thinking they could replicate the look and feel of the timeless accessory. As we can look back at history, we realize that part of the failure of the smartwatch industry was the lack of attention to design. No one really wanted devices that looked like mini personal computers on their wrists. The trade offs for minimal features simply wasn’t worth the aesthetic downgrade or cost.

Luckily for those of us who love watches, we have several true watch makers who are joining the mix. The watch I’ve been wearing for almost a month now is the Nixon Mission Android Wear.

A real watch designed for surf and snow

I’ve lived in San Diego half of my life and know Nixon as a surfer’s watch maker. It’s an ultra popular brand here, especially with its headquarters in Encinitas, which is located in north county San Diego. It has drawn success from making functional and fashion forward watches for almost 20 years.

Its first Android Wear device is nothing short of Nixon designed. You’d never know it was a smartwatch until you turned the display on.

dsc04981

Make no mistake, this is a watch first. It’s also a big watch. The 400×400 AMOLED display measures 48mm across, with a total crown diameter of 50mm. It measures at 16mm thick which might not be suitable for everyone. I usually wear watches with a 44mm crown, but after 30 minutes of wearing the Mission, I stopped noticing the large size of the watch. It’s surprisingly comfortable.

With that size you get true water resistance. Not the measly type of water resistance that you can drop in a toilet, or possibly wear it in the shower. The Mission is capable of maintaining water resistance down to 100m which means it qualifies as a real dive watch.

For residents of San Diego, we would probably use it surfing and that is what Nixon’s purpose of the Mission was designed for. It has an app unique to the Mission, that keeps track of the tide information in the area you choose or based on your location services.

dsc05925

I wore the Nixon Mission on my week long trip to Maui and wear it everyday in San Diego where the water is apart of our lifestyle. It survived several surf mornings in Maui where the waves rolled me over on more incidents that I would have liked. Even in the image above, you can see the salt crystals which are nearly impossible to wipe off.

15dc79e9-4dac-4faa-9800-6b75932c8c08My dog and I visit the beach every single weekend in Del Mar. She loves to swim and play fetch in the cold ocean water with me. Not once did I ever fear that the watch would fail to the water as I own several Nixon watches that have kept up with my active lifestyle.

dsc05844

Being a watch first, and one designed for active people, Nixon included its patented interlocking band to keep it secure to your wrist. It might seem like a little feature, but it’s a real necessity for surfers.

Residents of Southern California love to take advantage of the wide range of climate in our region. Just two hours away, at Big Bear Lake, we can go skiing or snowboarding in the mountains. The Nixon app also keeps track of the snow pack and weather conditions for those who love to surf on the snow.

What I love about the Mission is Nixon’s commitment to staying true to its customers. It didn’t try to create a smartwatch to compete with all watches, instead it created a purposeful watch that looks incredible while supporting the active lifestyle.

It’s also a real Android Wear device too

Inside of the surgical grade stainless steel case, is where you will find the standard internals commonly found in Android Wear.

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 processor
  • 4GB Memory
  • 512MB RAM
  • Bluetooth
  • Wi-Fi
  • 400mAh battery

For those of you who are familiar with Android Wear, the Nixon Mission offers nothing really different in the software other than device specific watch faces and the Mission app which keeps track of surf and ski conditions.

dsc04999

The Nixon watch faces are very much in fashion of its analog watches and looks damn good on the full display AMOLED display.

dsc05003

For those of you who don’t know Android Wear, it can perform functions such as provide notifications, keep track of emails and texts, take phone calls, provide map location, control music or store music for true wireless freedom, check the weather, keep track of your daily activities, and of course give you the time.

screen-shot-2016-11-13-at-7-18-40-pm

Battery life was on par with other smartwatches I’ve used recently. It gets roughly 24-36 hours of usage away from a charger. If you use it for music or maps, expect that life to drop to 12-18 hours.

Charging the Nixon Mission was very easy with the magnetic cable. In true Nixon fashion, it even braided the charging cable in black and orange nylon that helps it stand out. The Snapdragon 2100 processor also charges faster than the previous generation.

dsc05009

Verdict: It’s the first Android Wear device I truly love

We are fortunate on the Google side of the fence where we have dozens of options to choose from when it comes to Android Wear. We aren’t stuck with a rectangular shaped watch like iOS consumers are, and we have real watch makers like Tag Heuer and Nixon in the mix.

The Nixon Mission Android Wear is fairly priced at $399 and comes in three standard colors: Black, Grey, and Orange. It’s a real watch first that includes Android Wear to make it better than traditional offerings. Performance is nothing short of flawless, as I have yet to experience a slow down or glitch in three weeks of daily usage.

The Mission can also be custom designed to your liking at Nixon.com where you can select different bezels, cases, and watch bands. Nixon proved that smartwatches don’t have to look like personal wrist computers. They can withstand the high fashion of Southern California while resisting snow and salt water with the best of them.

Check out the Nixon Mission at Nixon, Amazon, Best Buy and Google.

Origem combo Bluetooth LED light bulb/speaker: A party all on its own (review)

We review quite a few accessories here at AndroidGuys and some of my favorites are the ones that are unexpectedly fun. I’ve been using a Bluetooth combo led light and speaker from a company called Origem and think it’s worth your consideration.

Let’s check out the Origem Magic Lamp.

Design

dsc06259The Origem Magic Lamp is a combination LED lightbulb and wireless speaker. It’s a bit larger than regular light bulbs, since it houses a speaker, but uses the same standard E27 threading that almost all of your bulbs use. It’s intended to be used in lamps, light fixtures or anywhere else that has a light socket.

dsc06266

The speaker sits inside of the housing with the LED light ring at the top. You don’t typically see combination products like this in big box stores such as Best Buy or Walmart which is why this review is fun for me.

Features:

  • 16M color LED lights
  • E27 Base
  • Bluetooth speaker/light combo
  • 300 Lumens
  • 7.4 x 4.9 x 4.6 inches

Usage

dsc06309

For the sake of this review, I installed the Origem Magic Lamp into my photo light fixture in my office. However, I used the Magic Lamp on my patio for the duration of this review, since San Diego pretty much has year around good weather where I can sit outside and enjoy music.

The Magic Lamp connects over Bluetooth once screwed in and powered on. You can download the iLight app at the Google Play Store for Android or the iOS App Store for Apple devices. Once paired to a smartphone or tablet over Bluetooth, you can then open the iLight app and control the light and speaker independently.

screenshot_20161113-134340

The app is very intuitive and easy to use. In the center of the app is where you will find the color wheel that allows you to change the LEDs up to 16M different colors. Or you could simply select the four preset colors at the bottom and the light will change to them. At the top is where you will find different modes for enjoying your light – Normal (solid), Rhythm which flickers to the beat of the music, Rainbow which changes the light to the light spectrum, Pulse which changes at a regular frequency and Candle which makes the light mimic a candle flickering in the wind.

dsc06287-animation
I didn’t think the light features would excite me much, but to be honest the change in light made for a great mood setter. I found myself using the light modes and different colors when I had friends over for drinks. It was quite the conversation starter, but luckily, it was too high for them to unscrew and take home since they all wanted it for themselves.

The internal speaker is surprisingly loud in the Magic Lamp. It’s certainly loud enough to hear in other rooms when played at maximum volume. When sitting under it on the patio, it can be played at 50-75% of maximum for comfortable listening. There isn’t an excess of bass with the speaker, however the mids and highs are detailed enough to make it more than acceptable to listen, to no matter the room.

At 300 lumens you shouldn’t expect it to be the brightest light in the room. While I use the Magic Lamp as a patio light, it might be best suited in a desk or night stand lamp. It provides enough white light to read a book under, or colorful mood lighting when the room is dark.

It’s a great combination of two wireless devices that helps keep things simple.

Summary

dsc06280

The Origem Magic Lamp is a fun Bluetooth speaker/LED light combo that is well worth its price tag of $29.88 at Amazon. If you separated the two you would have a solid LED light and an above average mini speaker, but combining them makes them a fun accessory.

The included app for the iLight makes the experience of using the lamp very easy and simple. It only took me about two minutes to get the light screwed in, connected and flickering all without reading the instructions. You might have difficulty locating the app since it isn’t listed in words, instead it is listed as a 2D barcode on the side. I’ll list the app links below to make things easier for you if you get the Magic Lamp, or you can simply search for iLight in the Google Play Store or iOS App Store.

It’s a fun lamp and speaker that I enjoy regularly on my patio. This will make a great gift at the reasonable price of $29.88.

Check out the Origem Magic Lamp at Amazon today.

Don’t buy a new phone without checking here first (November 13)

0

As we get closer to the always-popular Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, carriers are doing their best to get your attention. This means all sorts of promotions and discounts to attract you and your wallet. Here’s a list of what each of the top five carriers are doing this week.

Nexus 6P vs. Pixel XL (Smartphone Showdown)

34

I’ve always been a compulsive upgrader; I upgraded to every new Nexus phone, I rooted it before I even installed Facebook, and I installed daily ROMs (and switched ROMs about once a week). Over the years, however, I’ve seen a shift in my taste – I prefer consistency and convenience to being on the buggy, bleeding edge these days. Don’t get me wrong, I signed up for the Nougat beta on day one and still have a dozen or so beta apps installed on my trusty Nexus 6P, but I don’t have enough time or energy in my adult life (sigh) to dedicate to the ever-changing phonosphere anymore.

Looks scarily like every other smartphone on the market. Weird.
Looks scarily like every other smartphone on the market. Weird.

But I digress. You’re not here to hear (read) about my phone purchasing habits, you want to know whether or not you should upgrade to the new Pixel XL to replace Google’s Last, Best Nexus.

In short, no. No you should not.

Let’s take a look; Nexus 6P vs Google Pixel XL.

Screen

5.7″ (1440 x 2560) vs 5.5″ (1440 x 2560)

This is really just a game of numbers, as both phones sport AMOLED screens with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and identical resolutions. The difference, small as it may be, lies in the fact that the 6P’s screen is 0.2″ larger on the diagonal, meaning that Pixel’s screen is probably a bit easier to handle and slightly denser.

Internals

2000Mhz Octa-Core vs 2150Mhz Quad-Core

3GB vs 4GB RAM

Adreno 430 vs Adreno 530

This is really the meat of the operation. RAM, Processor and GPU generally determine how snappy and quick the phone runs overall (though you’ll find an army of iOS users that insist that hardware isn’t everything), and Pixel has a distinct advantage in these three major areas. That being said, however, the old mantra “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is relevant in this situation. Slowdowns with my Nexus 6P are few and far between, and it handles everything I can throw at it like a champ. Even running the Developer version of Android 7.1, the 6P rarely falters. As such, I don’t feel that the Pixel is enough of an upgrade to justify dropping $800+. Ask me again in a year (when the 6P will be a year older, and another Pixel device will likely be launching).

downloadInternal Features

Bluetooth 4.2 / USB Type C / 802.11ac WiFi / Fingerprint Sensor

Let’s be honest, here. There’s no difference whatsoever in the hardware features of these two juggernauts. Both include the exact same hardware listed above – the only difference being that one of the phones was released a year after the other. It should be noted that the Pixel lineup features Fingerprint gestures, much to the chagrin of Nexus owners, but Google is on record saying that these gestures may make their way to the last Nexus phones after all – so we’ll call this an even draw.

Battery Life

While both phones feature a 3450mAh battery, the lower power consumption CPU of the Pixel means that you’ll squeeze a bit more time out of the battery – according to Phone Arena, about nine more hours of talk time.

Camera

While the technical specs of these two phones’ respective cameras may seem similar at first glance, tech blogs across the land all agree that the Pixel XL’s back camera is vastly superior to that of the Nexus 6P. According to Google itself, Pixel’s camera is the highest rated of any sensor to date, at 89 DxOMark.

Exclusive Features

The Pixel lineup can do everything the Nexus lineup can do, and more. Pixel has Google Assistant built-in to the system, and fingerprint gestures give added functionality at a touch. That being said, though, as noted above, Google has gone on record saying that gestures may end up coming to the Nexii and both phones already have access to a limited version of Assistant in the form of Allo. In short, the highly touted ‘exclusive’ features of Google’s Latest-and-Greatest, really aren’t all that game-changing.

Value

$649 vs $869

(Note: I went with retail prices on these two phones, but in reality you can easily find a Nexus 6P for $480 or less.) This is a no-brainer. the Nexus 6P is a flagship quality phone, even by today’s standard, and it was $200 less a year ago, when it first came out. And this, in my opinion, is where common sense comes in. If you have $900 laying around and you really, really want a new phone, go ahead and buy that Pixel XL. But if you’re an average consumer, you’re essentially paying $200 more (original retail price!) for a slight bump in hardware specs, a better camera, and a few exclusive features that may not be exclusive for long.

Verdict

Don’t do it.

While Google’s Pixel is an admirable first foray into the mobile hardware market, the incremental hardware upgrade and not-so-exclusive features do not justify the massive increase in price.

But hey, what do I know.

What’s the difference in Google’s Chromecast and the Chromecast Ultra?

0

The successor to the Chromecast streaming device–dubbed the Chromecast Ultra, has made its debut. With the new device having just launched, we decided to take a look at the differences between the two streaming devices.

With an MSRP of $69, the Chromecast Ultra is essentially double price of the Chromecast at $35. You’re likely wondering if you’re looking for a new Chromecast or your first Chromecast, what does the additional $34 of tech provide?

Similar design but with an updated logo
Chromecast Ultra supports 4K and HDR; set to launch this November

The main difference between the Chromecast and the Chromecast Ultra from Google, is the ability to stream 4K video. This higher resolution, higher bitrate video signal requires additional hardware such as a 4K monitor or TV as well as a higher bandwidth internet service.

It’s not recommended for those with a limited internet connection as it will use much more data and possibly not be able to stream properly, particularly at up to 4 times the rate of a standard HD picture.

The new Chromecast Ultra device also provides the ability to take advantage of the new HDR and Dolby Vision technologies. Both of these technologies are relatively new, but offer expanded color-depth and contrast ratios not possible on standard televisions of yesterday. Your television must support one or both of these new technologies to take full advantage, and also be enabled, but offer stunning new video and audio qualities.

The Chromecast Ultra has a plug for direct ethernet access
The Chromecast Ultra has a plug for direct ethernet access

With Amazon, nVidia and Roku already offering competitive devices with new 4K capabilities, it would only seem fit that Google joins in on the fun. Many new televisions sold today have 4K and HDR capabilities and the prices continue to fall.

There’s a few things consumers must keep in mind to take advantage of these new technologies, but once considered, the picture quality differences are really spectacular. It’s safe to assume, that going forward, Google will offer both devices for the time being, but eventually the Chromecast Ultra should usurp the original Chromecast device.

If you’re in the market for a new 4K television, be sure to consider the Chromecast Ultra as a capable add-on for 4K video streaming. Otherwise, you can’t really go wrong with any of the Chromecast models available to consumers.

When and where to buy: Motorola Moto G4 Plus

2

Now in its fourth go ’round, the Motorola G line is split into three different models. The G4 Plus is the largest sibling in the family and features all of the same tech found in the standard bearer -plus a little extra.

Key hardware includes a 16-megapixel camera that scores higher than the iPhone 6S. The fingerprint reader, found on the front, adds an extra layer of security for lock screens and purchases.

Other specifications worth noting include a 5.5-inch full HD display, an octa-core processor and Motorola’s water-repellent coating.

Sold unlocked, the G4 Plus can be paired with any major GSM or CDMA carrier. This means you can switch from Verizon to T-Mobile, Sprint to AT&T, and anything in between.

While the phone comes in black and white versions, customers can customize their own unique build through Motorola’s Moto Maker tool. Memory options include 2GB RAM with 16GB storage and, for $50 more, 4GB RAM with 64GB storage.
