LG gives full refunds for Nexus 5X units affected by particular hardware failure

1

It seems like some owners of LG’s last year’s Nexus 5X are experiencing some problems with their handset.

According to several reports on Reddit, some Nexus 5X devices are affected by a hardware malfunction that causes the device to enter a boot loop. Naturally, users faced with this issue took advantage of their warranty and send the phone in for repairs.

In most similar cases, while in service original unit’s problems get fixed, or users are awarded a refurbished unit or even a new one altogether.

nexus_5xBut here things are a bit different. It seems that LG is unable to fix the fault causing the damage to the Nexus 5X due to a hardware piece that’s out of stock. So the company is issuing full refunds to owners who are faced with this issues. From Reddit:

We’re sorry to hear that you’ve experienced a problem with your LGH790 and appreciate you giving us the opportunity to provide a warranty repair. We have received your device at our repair facility but currently a part to complete the repair is out of stock and is no longer available.

To rectify this issue, we would like to offer you a refund for the full amount of your device. That amount will be determined by your sales receipt. Your refund can take approximately 4 weeks to receive due to the holiday.”

While Google has stopped selling the Nexus 5X after the Pixels went on sale, it looks like LG has stopped manufacturing it as well. Even so, third-party retailers might still offer the Nexus 5X like for example Amazon.

adopted nexus 5x caseThe Nexus 5X was released in October 2015, so users who have purchased the phone staring November are still within the standard one year warranty grace period. If you too are having problems with your phone, maybe you should contact LG and get your full refund.

Naturally, you need to be prepared to engage into a lengthy verification process and LG warns the refund might take up to 4 weeks due to the holiday season.

The Nexus 5X was the more affordable handset from the Nexus duo unveiled last year. The handset features a 5.2-inch display with 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution, a Snapdragon 808 under the hood plus 2GB of RAM and 16GB/32GB of internal storage.

Nexus 5X_35833CAA4476_The handset also took advantage of a 12.3MP/5MP camera combo plus a fingerprint scanner and a 2,700 mAh battery.

If you have a malfunctioning Nexus 5X, getting a full refund is quite a good option to have, unless you really love your phone and you don’t want another one as a replacement.

Xiaomi’s first processor, the Pinecone SoC is coming soon

0

Xiaomi took the world by storm with its remarkably solid, but affordable smartphones. On top of that, the company also known as Apple’s China also sells a lot of other products including wearables, speakers, Android TV box sets, earbuds, power banks action cams.

But did you know that Xiaomi also makes processors? Well the chipset aren’t exactly ready for prime time yet, but the Chinese manufacturer is actively working on its own silicone. It’s not unheard of for device makers to come to a point where they want to rely on their in-house chips.

xiaomi-mi-5c-specsApple has its own A series and in the Android ecosystem, we have Samsung with its home grown Exynos chipsets and Huawei with its Kirin chipsets. Well Xiaomi will soon be a part of the select group of manufactures which also make their own chips.

Xiaomi’s first silicone piece already made an appearance online. It’s called the Pinecone SoC and is expected to power the company’s rumored Mi 5c. “C” probably stands for “cheap” (also remember the colorful iPhone 5c) as the Mi 5c is expected to come make a debut with less than premium specs.

Pinecone is not a top of the line chipset, but more of an entry level SoC that features an octa-core CPU (using the Cortex-A53) clocked at 2.2GHz.

Apart from the home-grown chipset, the phone is expected to arrive with a 5.5-inch display with 2.5D glass and very thin bezels.

xiaomi-entry-levelThe Mi 5c is also said to come bundling 3GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It features a 12MP camera on the back and an 8MP selfie snapper. The phone should land with NFC onboard and only Android 6.0 pre-installed with MIUI 8 on top.

The presence of NFC, hints towards an interesting possibility. Maybe Xiaomi is working on a service akin to Samsung Pay or Android Pay, let’s call it Mi Pay for the time being. It’s just a guess, so take it with a hefty grain of salt.

According to current hearsay we could see the device get unveiled as soon as November 30. It will cost users in China approximately $145.

Xiaomi is probably testing the grounds with the Pinecone SoC. But who knows, maybe next year we’ll see high-end Xiaomi phones taking advantage of the company’s own premium processors.

Microsoft Solitaire now available for Android and iOS

Some of my earliest memories involving a computer are of me playing Solitaire on my parents’ desktop computer. An iconic Windows game, Solitaire has existed and entertained people of all ages for more than 25 years.

Well it seems that Microsoft is finally bringing Solitaire to mobile. While there are plenty of Solitaire-like apps in the Google Play Store, the Microsoft Solitaire Collection is the first official app to be released by the producing company.

Those who download the app now will be awarded one month of Premium Edition for free (which removes banners and full screen advertisements), which otherwise costs $1.99/month or $9.9/year. The offer expires on December 31, 2016.

Star Knight: A welcome change from the typical Play Store platformers (Review)

0

Sometimes I feel like the Play Store will never evolve from providing these short, simple games that offer very basic gameplay, no progression, no story and almost null replay value. But then I encounter games as Star Knight and my hopes return.

If more games were like Star Knight and less like these short attention span kind of games, then the world would be a better place. Seriously, Star Knight provides gameplay and progression like very few games in the Play Store, and manages to keep you coming back for more with elements such as unlockables and intricate level design.

Developer: LeftRight
Price: $0.99

Setup

A very curious (and I might say unfortunate) thing happens when opening the app: it asks you for a total of six permissions. I mean, it’s hard (though possible) to develop apps that don’t require permissions. The problem is, why does Star Knight asks me for permission to access my contacts and my location? There’s absolutely no functions in the game that might require this. Draw your own conclusions.

After this sketchy episode, you’re greeted with a Google Play Games setup, as is the case with an increasing number of games in the Play Store. Star Knight uses it as a platform for setting up achievements, save files, and similar. If you play games regularly, you know the drill by now: select a Google account and our Android overlords will do the rest.

Overview

star_knight_gameplay_2
Gameplay is really fun and provides new elements all the time.

The game starts with a couple of lines of story and then kicks you right into the game. Your character starts the journey alongside his significant other. However, the boss at the end of the level deals with this quickly (and sadly for the main character).

You have four on-screen buttons at first: left, right, jump, and attack. Since a couple of taps and a little bit of curiosity is enough to figure out the controls, there’s no tutorial or anything similar. The game is simple: kill your enemies, avoid the multiple obstacles, reach the end of the level, rinse and repeat.

There are five different worlds, each one divided into 12 different levels. The levels start simple enough, with normal platforms and enemies to kill. However, you will quickly see that Star Knight will start throwing at you walls with spikes, rotating objects with spikes, grounds with spikes and other spiky paraphernalia that will halt your progress. Apart from spikes, puzzles get more complicated and enemies get stronger as you advance in the game.

Fortunately, you can get stronger, too. Your journey will take you into different situations where you will find objects from your significant other. This will increase your total health bar.

Also, you can get runes, which are white, hexagonal elements that you have to collect in order to get skills. These skills vary between them, from Super Smash, which does a strong attack, to Shield, which creates a shield around your character for four seconds. Some skills cannot be obtained from runes, though.

This is where the concept of coins becomes important. When you kill enemies, you will get coins. They are used to buy additional swords for your character and skills that are not unlockable by runes. If you lack the required coins and you need that shiny new sword right now, then you can buy coins through in-app purchases.

General Impressions

star_knight_arena
Level design in Star Knight is outstanding.

Of course, none of these elements would be useful if the gameplay was boring. Fortunately, it’s not. Star Knight combines different elements in a very imaginative, fun way. For example, there are walls that you can climb (Super Mario-like), crates that you can pile up to make you reach the unreachable, springs in the ground, switches to unblock/block certain areas, platforms that crumble and regenerate after time, bombs, among others. This provides gameplay that varies all the time and never gets boring.

All of these collectibles, progress elements, and hike in difficulty makes the game very fun and keep you coming back to see which kind of obstacles the game will throw at you next. Also, the fact that you can collect stuff adds to the replay value. You can actually experience that feeling of progression that is so hard to find in the Play Store these days.

Controls also feel very responsive. You never get the impression of being hindered by them. I would love to see a vibration setting, though. I just can’t get used to tapping buttons on a game without receiving any kind of tangible feedback. That’s not a problem with the game, however. The controls are awesome, their placement is adequate and their responsiveness is outstanding.

Arena

There’s an additional mode called Arena, in which your character is dropped in a monster-filled stage and you have to kill tiers of monsters in order to advance. It’s a really fun way of distracting from the main gameplay, and it’s also the most efficient way of getting gold for those prohibitively expensive swords available.

star_knight_gameplay
The arena provides a nice challenge and is a great addition to the main story.

Be warned though: either I’m really bad at this game, or the arena is a pretty hard endeavor. It could be both, too. Anyways, be ready for the taste of frustration, especially at the beginning when you have a weak sword that can’t even cut through butter.

Graphics

The artwork for this game is primarily black. Depending on the setting, the color palette may change a bit. Normally, though, these colors tend to be dark, so don’t expect colorful, flashy graphics. This isn’t meant in a bad way, however: the game is really nice to look at, and the artwork is very consistent across different elements, making the game feel cohesive.

Also, apart from the main character, which has very subtle but nice elements, the other sprites are normally only mildly detailed. Again, this is not supposed to be a bad thing, it’s just so you can adjust your expectations. Monsters and other elements look good with the elements that the designers have decided to incorporate. The backgrounds always look nice, and the combination of colors make up for some interesting sights. Just don’t expect highly detailed sprites and you’ll be fine.

Sound

star_knight_collectibles
You can get stronger by buying new swords.

The songs that play in the background during gameplay are soothing melodies that don’t get old fast (or at least it takes a lot of time for you to get tired of it). A good thing about them is that they change according to the place you’re at. Each world has its own track, as well as the arena and the main menu.

Sound effects accomplish their objectives without being spectacular. Several actions trigger a sound effect, such as swinging your sword, slashing other enemies, and dying. They’re nothing special but they get the job done.

Options

There aren’t many options you can change, but the ones that are present are enough. You can turn on or off both the background music and the special effects. There’s also a way of changing the language of the interface (16 languages available), which is nice, and something games fail to do most of the time.

Another noteworthy option doesn’t appear in the options screen, but in the pause screen: the ability to record your gameplay. If you want to upload your prowess to YouTube, you can record it with this option. It’s nice that the developer took the time to implement these kind of stuff that other games don’t provide.

Google Play Games

star_knight_options
There are not many options to choose from, but Google Play Games is integrated.

There are 18 different achievements to keep you entertained. They range from moderately easy (Kill Act 1 boss), to insanely hard (get three stars on all levels). There are some that deal with the memories of your beloved one, watching the ending, and even with dying (do it 1000 times and you’ll get an achievement).

The game is supposed to let you upload your save file to the cloud, to be retrieved later on another device. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get it to work, no matter how hard I tried under different conditions. When I tried to upload a save file, a progress dialog appeared and then disappeared right after. It’s unfortunate, since it would be a big plus if the featured worked correctly. Maybe it’s a problem with my phone and not with the functionality itself, but I’m not certain.

Conclusion

Star Knight manages to provide fun for hours, thanks to its intricate level design, and sense of progression. You can definitely feel how this game is much more refined and elaborate than the majority of games available in the Play Store. Yes, a lot of the games in the store are normally free, and, for many different reasons, a paid app is a barrier to a lot of people. But, if you normally spend your money on apps, then for a mere $0.99 (€0.92 in Europe) you can get a highly polished game that will bring you joy and fun for a long time.

Xiaomi Mi MIX Nano rumored to make a debut in early December

0

Last week a few pictures showcasing the smaller variant of the Xiaomi Mi MIX, dubbed Nano surfaced online.

According to the leak, the phone will abandon the huge 6.4-inch form factor of the Mi MIX and will feature a more acceptable 5.5-inch display. Well according to the most recent word on the street coming to us via Android Soul, the Xiaomi Mi MIX Nano appears to be slated for an immediate release – the first week of December to be more precise.

But this is not official information yet, so you better take this with a healthy grain of salt.

better-view-of-two-xiaomi-mi-mix-phonesOther than the smaller form factor, the Mi MIX Nano is expected to feature pretty much the same specs as the Mi MIX.

In early December we might see the Mi MIX Nano go live with a 5.5-inch display with 1080p resolution, a Snapdragon 821 processor and 4GB of RAM plus 64GB of internal storage. Apparently the phone will launch with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow but Android 7.0 Nougat will probably be offered at some point, although we don’t know exactly when.

two-xiaomi-mi-mix-phonesXiaomi is currently recruiting Android Nougat alpha testers for the Mi5 flagship, but surely other premium phones will follow.

Anyway today’s leak gives us another look at the upcoming phone, although it reveals nothing news. It’s expected the phone will land on the market with a $435 price attached to it.

xiaomi-mi-mix-vs-mix-nanoIn other news, Xiaomi has just confirmed its first time presence at CES next year in Las Vegas. The company has teased an all-new global product release. Hopefully Xiaomi meant a phone. If the Mi MIX Nano doesn’t come this December, chances are it might get unveil in Las Vegas.

Huawei gets crowned most profitable Android OEM in Q3

2

Major Android OEMs like Samsung, HTC and LG might be losing a lot of money through their mobile division, but others are thriving.

A new report coming out of Strategy Analytics reveals more data on the smartphone market in Q3. According to the information, the mobile industry posted $9.4 billion in profits.

As you can see for yourselves, 91% of that number was grabbed by Apple. In second place with only 2.4% came Huawei, which means the Chinese manufacturers can now take the crown as most profitable Android OEMs in Q3. Goodbye, Samsung!

smartphone-profit-q3In Q3 Apple took home up 8.5 billion in profits, while Huawei managed to snatch $0.2 billion. Executive director at Strategy Analytics, Neil Mawston commented on Huawei’s success. He believes that the company’s efficient supply chain, great product lineup and powerful marketing campaigns are the key ingredients to Huawei’s success.

Huawei does indeed offer a wide range of phones, from the premium P9 or newly unveiled Mate 9 to the more affordable Honor 8 and low-budget Enjoy 6.

huawei-honor-8-9Huawei is riding the wave right now. The company produced Google’s Nexus 6P and is so secure that it passed on the opportunity to make the Pixel phones, leaving that “pleasure” to HTC. We all know the Taiwanese device maker was left out of all Pixel promotional and branding affairs and Huawei would have none of that.

Strategy Analytics also names two other OEMs and to the surprise of everyone, they are also Chinese companies. They are Vivo and Oppo – both with 2.2% of global smartphone profit share (around $0.2 billion).

Vivo for example, recently unveiled a Galaxy S7 edge competitor with a dual-edged panel design, which offers some improvements over the Samsung phablet. Slowly but surely, customers seems to be migrating towards Chinese OEMs and their affordable products.

vivo-xplay6-launchesA notable absentee form the list, Samsung is trying to recover from the Galaxy Note7 fiasco. But judging buy a recent poll which claims the phablet debacle hasn’t damaged Samsung’s reputation in the US, the Korean tech giant should have no problems in making a comeback in Q4 (which is incidentally the holiday quarter).

The report clams that the global operating profit of $9.4 billion for the quarter ending in September marks a decrease from the $13.5 billion in the same time last year. With the smartphone becoming more and more ubiquitous, less people are buying a handset for the first time and this is reflected in the numbers above.

The making of UMi Plus E – the pinnacle of craftsmanship

0

Nowadays, a lot of companies promise premium build quality on their smartphones, but not everyone manages to match the expectations when their product is released.

UMi, on the other hand, has always been confident about the quality of its products. The company has shown different times in the past how its products are manufactured, showing materials and productive processes used in order to achieve the ideal result.

making_plus_e_01

The UMi Plus E, the latest flagship made by the Chinese company, makes no exception. UMi recently released a video where you can see the full working process which transforms a piece of metal into the finely crafted body of the Plus , in this case the Onyx Black variant. Watch and you’ll see how much work and care is put behind every single unit.

More than 125 complex processes to making one Onyx Black UMi Plus E

The process starts when choosing the best aluminium alloy 6000 series, which is finely assembled to give the best possible tolerance when facing bumps and falls without deforming. Then, the body faces some CNC polishing processes, to give the smoothest and refined feeling to the touch: sandblasting, Anodic Oxidation, manual sand papering. After putting the logo and writings with laser, openings are made and the frame is finely worked. Then the coating is applied to give the final appearance of the device.

making_plus_e_02

While this is a very simplified description of what happens in these 125 processes, it gives the idea of how much care and attention is needed when crafting every single unit of the UMi Plus E, it’s a process which relies constantly on the experience and the craftsmanship of the artisans involved, something which would be impossible to achieve if only machines were used in the process.

About the UMi Plus E

UMi Plus E is world’s first Helio P20-powered smartphone. The phone packs an impressive 6GB LPDDR4 RAM, 64GB of internal storage (expandable up to 256GB via a microSD card), a 5.5-inch fullHD (1920 x 1080) display made by Sharp, a 4,000mAh battery with PE+ Fast Charging support, a 13-megapixel PDAF Samsung snapper placed on the back of the UMi Plus E aerospace-class aluminum chase.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Glossy Black smiles for the camera

0

Samsung recently made available a new version of the Galaxy S7 edge. The new phones take advantage of a color hue which made a debut on the dearly departed Galaxy Note7 – Coral Blue.

Now that the Coral Blue Galaxy S7 edge is out and about, Samsung seems to be planning the release of another version. This time is the Glossy Black one.

Samsung probably wants to offer an alternative to the recently launched Jet Black iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The folks at Sam Mobile have spotted a few images showcasing the upcoming phone on Samsung’s official Weibo account, which indicates the handset isn’t far from being released.

samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-front-viewThe Glossy Black model is quite akin to the Black Onyx one, except that instead of the matte finish, the back is now coated with a shiny layer of paint.

samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-incomingWe’re not given any extra information of when the Glossy Black model might be expected to arrive in the wild or in which markets. We can only hope the shiny black phone will land in the US, as well and won’t be limited to China and other Asian countries.

Samsung is currently looking to create more interest around the Galaxy S7 edge, in the wake of the Galaxy Note7 demise.

samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-in-boxThe Korean tech giant allows Note7 refugees to exchange their Note7 for a Galaxy S7 edge. And next year those enrolled in the Galaxy Upgrade program will be able to purchase next year’s Galaxy S8 or Note8 at half the price.

samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-backSome Galaxy Note7 owners are still having time renouncing their premium phablet and taking up the slightly older Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge instead. Some users feel like going from the Note7 to the Galaxy S7 qualifies as a downgrade, so they are waiting for the Galaxy S8 next year.

However, a new Galaxy S7 edge Glossy Black model might have the power to attract the eyes of a few customers. Or at least Samsung hopes so. What do you think?
