Android Auto finally gets blessed with “OK Google” support

0

Android Auto has been around for about two years, but only supports about 200 car models. But with the advent of the Android Auto app for Android, Google extended the availability of the service to basically anyone with a car and an Android 5.0 Lollipop or later device.

Today, Android Auto is getting a feature which was inexplicably not included so far. We’re talking about “OK Google”. Finally users can say the magic word in order to wake up the voice controlled interface.

In order to be able to start issuing commands via OK Google, you will need to update the phone up to v2.0.6427 or just download the APK and then install it on your phone.

After the new version is installed, you should see that the “While driving” toggle has now been updated to include both Google Maps and Android Auto.

With the arrival of this new feature, drivers can finally open up apps, get help with trivia questions, update your calendar or reply to email by using voice commands – all hands-free. It was about time, wouldn’t you say?

Android Auto is currently available across 31 countries including the UK, Australia and the United States, but Google is planning to expand availability in the near future.

Nokia launches new phone section on its website

0

Not so long ago, a few surfaced Nokia slideshows confirmed the company is indeed planning to make a comeback to the world of smartphones in 2017.

Well if you need more confirmation, let us tell you that the Finish company already launched the new phone section on its site today, so new smartphones are most certainly in the pipeline.

nokia-upcoming-phones

For the time being Nokia’s new handset set greets users by saying “Inspired by ambition, made for everyone”. It also re-states the fact that new devices are pegged for 2017. A disclaimer says the website is operated by HMD Global Oy, the exclusive licensee of the Nokia brand for phones and tablets.

If we are to listen to the information coming from the rumor mill, in 2017 Nokia is expected to unveil two smartphones, one with a 5.2-inch display and another with a 5.5-inch screen both with QHD resolution.

The Snapdragon 820 will be the chipset fueling the two devices, but given that the Snapdragon 835 has been already announced, it seems more likely the phones will take advantage of 10nm-based silicone piece instead.

We’ve also heard, the new Nokia’s will feature Carl Zeiss branding like the models of old, which isn’t such a surprise. Other rumored specs include an IP68 certification for water and dust resistance, fingerprint scanner and a revamped Z Launcher.

nokia-n1-tablet

Last but not least, the phones with launch with Android 7.0 Nougat out the box. It remains to be seen under which name Nokia will choose to market the devices.

We hope it will be something more inspiring than the N1 tablet – an iPad mini clone that was the first to make a debut on Android Lollipop two years ago.

The future of smartwatch and wearable technology

0

The future is exciting indeed with technology seeping in everywhere. Our lives are becoming easier and more opportunities are presenting themselves to us. The latest and, supposedly, greatest of technological innovations to wow people around the world – smart watches and wearables are here to stay. Smartwatches are a relatively new creation, making its first appearance in the commercial market in 2014. Samsung started the race with its Tizen-operated smart watches with LG and Motorola following in the race. Apple was last of the giants to come up with its own Apple Watch.

The hype surrounding wearable technology is enormous. People are expecting wearables to take over our lives and they can be proven right, in the not-so-distant future. But right now, the technology is far from perfect and only in the infant phase of its life. The wrist wearables of today can be categorized into two sections: health trackers and notification-based smart watches. While the fitness trackers have a definite purpose, the smartwatches lack clear direction in its range of capabilities. A true revolution will only start when these wearables will be able to integrate into our daily use and also create its own niche. Here are a few attributes that will help wearable technologies achieve their true potential.

Efficiency

The battery life is the biggest obstacle facing this particular technology. It is supposed to last weeks and months like regular watches, unlike just hours and days like it currently does. All these affects the function of smartwatches and prevents it from working as a stand-alone gadget like it wants to be. Alternative methods of charging using solar energy could be used instead, to ensure better longevity.

Personalization

What we wear is a very personal choice. How Apple has created a space for third-party manufacturers to create and sell Apple watch bands sets an example to why wearables need to be personalized enough for people to have the incentive to sport them all the time. In the process, these devices will be invisible, making them more efficient and powerful.

Accurate

All of our devices are constantly taking data from our body and its movements. Many aspects of our lives are now closely connected to numbers. These wearables can, technically, be able to correctly capture and analyze data but industry standards on accuracy levels are yet to be developed.

Sentient

These devices need to have the capacity to understand its surroundings and evolve according to demands of the client. People grow new interests every day and the wearable devices need to adapt and be relevant in the long run, without which, sustenance for these products can be jeopardized.

Seamless

The most exciting prospect about wearable technology is that it can sync with your home appliances and give us a unique experience. We will no longer have to push buttons to get things but they will happen on their own automatically, using various triggers in our body that make them manifest. Flashes of the TV series ‘Black mirror’ come into mind where they complete household chores effortlessly.

Permission

The prospect of having an entire new platform with its own set of apps and programs is making marketers very curious about the possibilities that lie in front of them. Even though they get to engage customers with new ideas, users will also get the option to set their own privacy and get a more personalized experience in return.

In summary, the future looks bright. Smart watches are a great prospect that will earn a lot of money and also make our lives easier in every possible way.

Motorola might launch a Project Tango Moto Mood soon

0

Motorola’s Mod are a defining feature of its Z lineup of smartphones. These are phone accessories that snap onto the device using magnets and are quite popular with users due to the extra functionalities they add. Now a new report reveals that Moto Mods are bound to get even better with the addition of a Project Tango one.

The first Project Tango, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro was launched on the US market not so long ago, so there’s plenty of room for other device makers to offer their respective products. ASUS is also rumored to unveil a Tango phone at CES 2017 and now Motorola seems to be interested in working with Google.

According to PC Mag, Motorola’s Aymar de Lencquesaing explained that following Lenovo’s lead, Motorola is also contemplating releasing a Mod that will bestow Augmented Reality capabilities to the phone.

Project Tango gives phones and tablets a sense of space in order to radically change how people use their devices. Using a mix of cameras and specialized sensors, Project Tango devices gather data from the environment to build on-screen 3D objects.

Project Tango phones will be able to do things like map indoor spaces, while knowing their own location within that space and orientation. Tango can be thought of as a Kinect-like device and a Wii-like remote.

Moto Z Force Droid Moto Mods

Moto Mods can add spectacular functionality to your Moto Z handset, as demonstrated by a recent story. Sports Illustrated just shot its first ever cover using only a smartphone, the Moto Z and the Hasselblad True Zoom Mod. So we’re pretty excited about the upcoming Augmented Reality Mods.

Samsung will soon block the Note7 from Australia’s networks

0

Still holding on to a Galaxy Note7 phablet and living in Australia? Then we have some bad news for you. Samsung just announced it working with Aussie telecommunication networks to discontinue all services for the Galaxy Note7 that are still in use in the country.

The shutdown starts on December 15 and Galaxy Note7 owners should expect to receive the following message “on-going communication and updates about the Australian network discontinuation provided to customers over the next three weeks, to ensure adequate notice is provided” starting today.

Worried about the possibility of unreturned Galaxy Note7 units exploding, Samsung has resorted to this drastic measure to force remaining owners of the phablet to send their device in.

Samsung urges users to return the device to its place of purchase or call the Samsung Customer Service line (1300 362 603) or visit the Samsung Australian Note 7 return page for further guidance.

Until December 22, Samsung is still offering to swap the Note7 with a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge, refund the difference in price plus $250 in credit, so if you still have the phone now is the time to return it before you find yourself unable to do anything with it.

burned-galaxy-note7-unit

In a similar move, last month Samsung with the help of the New Zealand Telecommunications Forum blacklisted got the device blacklisted from the country’s networks.

The Korean tech giant has been sending updates to remaining Note7 owners that limit battery charging to 60% and remind users they are holding on to a potentially dangerous device.

A recent poll ordered by Reuters/Ipsos found that Samsung’s brand reputation remained unstained despite the Galaxy Note7 fiasco. 27% of users involved in the study who knew about the Galaxy Note7 affair said they will continue to purchase from Samsung, while 25% who were not familiar with the story confirmed their company of choice will continue to be Samsung.

Samsung is preparing a big come back to make up for all the Galaxy Note7 woes, with the Galaxy S8, a phone expected to rock a few enticing features like an iris scanner, selfie camera with autofocus and a Siri-like virtual AI assistant.

Fitbit wants to buy Pebble, report says

0

Acquisitions happen all the time, Microsoft purchased Nokia a few years back and Samsung acquired Harman not so long ago. Larger conglomerates absorb smaller companies, while still allowing them to produce products under their own unique brands.

And soon we’re going to see something similar happen in the world of wearables. According to a report coming out The Information (subscription needed), fitness wearable maker Fitbit is currently in the process of buying Pebble for a sum between believed to be between $34 million and $40 million.

pebble round

Pebble which debuted back in 2012 in Kickstarter with a successful campaign that raised over $7 million, seems to be going through a rough period. Despite being quite popular among wearable lovers, the brand has had difficulty in keeping afloat. Back in March, the company was forced to lay off about 25% of its employees.

Times have changed since 2012. Big players in the tech industry including Apple, Samsung, LG, Motorola and Huawei have descended in the wearable arena with products that are more attractive and offer a lot more function.

Pebble seemed to be unfazed by the arrival of Apple Watch, which ultimately proved to be a big mistake.

If everything goes through, Pebble’s intellectual property and software will go to Fitbit. The fitness maker’s initiative to purchase Pebble, comes at a time when interest for smartwatches and fitness tracker is waning. According to a recent report from IDC wearables, the wearable market has seen a decline during the Q3 with 52% compared to the same period last year.

fitbit_charge2_clasp

Not only Pebble has been experiencing financial troubles, but also Fitbit which reported mixed Q3 financial results and weak guidance for the holiday season. But who knows, maybe the forces of the two iconic wearable companies combined will help Fitbit advance towards a better future.

Fitbit might be also looking to expand into new product niches. The company unveiled the Change 2 and Flex 2 in August, but also a line of luxe leather bands and premium accessories.

Sports Illustrated shoots its first cover with a smartphone, the Motorola Moto Z

0

It’s no secret phones have been seeing major updates in the camera department in the last few years, but even so old school photographers tend to stick to their DSLRs, right? Well it seems like the folks of Sports Illustrated performed a little experiment and shot the cover of their latest magazine cover using a Motorola Moto Z and a Hasselblad True Zoom Moto Mod attached to the smartphone.

hasselblad-true-zoom-mounted

The Motorola Moto Z features a 13MP main camera, but the Hasselblad True Zoom offers professional settings which enabled photographer Mike LeBretcht to snap good quality images. LeBretcht also employed the help of some lighting equipment and Photoshop to produce the final pictures, but Motorola Moto Z should feel good knowing their phone can be used to produce professional looking images.

The cover featuring Dwayne Johnson was shot in Beverly Hills on November 14, teases the issue’s special story which revolves on The Rock got his start in sports.

Hasselblad is a house hold name when it comes to professional photography and Motorola users should know they can pick up the Hasselblad True Zoom for your Moto Z, but also for the Moto Z Droid and Moto Z Force Droid (two Verizon exclusives).

The Mod is currently available in multiple locations. For example you can pick it up from B&H for $299 a pop or from Amazon for a cheaper $249.

The Hasselblad True Zoom adds 10x optical zoom, Xenon flash, physical shutter and zoom, easy sharing and backup and allows users to shoot images in raw format.

The phone lives off a 2,600 mAh battery and is among the first of the Motorola handsets to receive Android 7.0 Nougat. A few days ago we told you the phone was available with $200 off from Amazon and at the time of writing this article the promotion is still ongoing, so you can go ahead and grab the phone for $499. Add the $249 Hasselblad Mod and you’ll need to take out of your pocket $748.

Facemoji Keyboard: A fun, customizable keyboard

Keyboards might be the most boring things on our phones. For the majority of people, the keyboard that comes on your phone is the one you stay with. But there is a world of third party keyboard apps out there that do more than a stock keyboard app could ever dream. Today, we are taking a look at a keyboard that is trying to add some fun to your typing experience – Facemoji Keyboard.

Setup

If you have ever used a third party keyboard before, the setup here is no different from that. However, for those of you just now moving away from your stock keyboard, the setup has a couple of extra steps. After downloading the app, you will have to enable it on your device and set it as your default keyboard. Thankfully, when you first open Facejomi Keyboard, it walks you through these steps in a way anyone can follow. After that is all done, you are ready to type.

Experience

fileminimizer-facemoji-keyboard-themesSo what makes Facemoji Keyboard different from all the other keyboards out there? Over my week or so using the keyboard, I have to say that it is the most fun one I have ever used. The first thing you will notice is the emphasis on personalization within the keyboard through keyboard themes and emoji styles.

There are the normal keyboard themes like dark, light, and colors, but that is only the tip of the iceberg. Just scrolling through the library of themes for a few minutes, I came across ones about baseball, flowers, tattoos, and Paris. Some of the themes are even animated to add to their uniqueness, but I don’t know how friendly that will be to your battery life. I personally stuck with a normal blue color, but the option is there to pick anything you want. The default emoji style is iOS-like, but it can be changed to several different styles. I went back to the standard Android emojis as I am one of the few that seems to actually like the way they look.

facemoji-keyboardAfter spending some time making the keyboard look just the way you want, you can finally get into the typing experience itself. At the top of the keyboard, you will notice several hotkeys. The left-most one that resembles a four-leafed clover will show you different settings options. The shirt icon will let you choose a theme to apply from any of the default themes or those you have downloaded. You can also quickly access the theme gallery to find a new one. The cursor icon in the middle lets you precisely move the cursor around to place it exactly where you want. While I appreciate this addition and love how useful it is, I wonder why it was not done in a similar fashion to Google Keyboard where you long-press the spacebar and drag to position the cursor. This way would have freed up a spot in the top bar for another hotkey, but at least the feature was included in the app.

The ghost emoji will take you to the sticker page, which we will talk about soon. Finally, the downward arrow on the right will minimize the keyboard. I think this is another wasted button as the back key on Android phones will minimize the keyboard already. I would have rather seen another shortcut in place of the arrow.

facemoji-keyboard-stickersThe inclusion of stickers and GIFs is what set this keyboard apart from many others that I have used. For those of you who do not know what stickers are in a keyboard app, they are basically advanced emojis that are more detailed and sometimes animated. I personally have never used stickers or GIFs when texting anyone, but the features were integrated so well into Facemoji Keyboard that I decided to give them a try. The included sticker pack is iOS-style emojis that have been animated, but you can search through the sticker gallery and download any pack that you find interesting. I personally like the sloth pack, but your options are numerous.

When you switch to the emoji tab, you will find the option to use GIFs. You can choose from trending GIFs, select a tag to view related GIFs, or just use the search function. Earlier, I mentioned that Facemoji keyboard was the most fun keyboard I have used, and that is thanks in full to the inclusion of GIFs. Being able to quickly search up a GIF and drop it into a conversation is great, and although I know the same feature is available in other keyboard apps, I still thoroughly enjoyed it when using Facemoji Keyboard. My only problem was how Textra handled selecting a GIF from the keyboard. Instead of just sending it directly in the conversation I was in, a window would pop up and have me select who I wanted to send the GIF to. I did not experience this problem with other texting apps.

There are a few time-saving features that Facemoji Keyboard also offers. Emoji prediction is exactly like preditive text but for emojis. Suggested emojis are displayed in the bar at the top of the keyboard, and you can tap directly on them to avoid having to swipe through multiple tabs of emojis. Holding down on the Enter/Return key will bring up your five most used emojis, which definitely saves time for those of us who use emojis constantly.

facemoji-keyboard-quick-emojisThe overall typing experience with Facemoji keyboard is about average, and I still cannot match the speed I get with Google Keyboard. The inclusion of swiping to type is wonderful, but I found myself typing at the speed I get with most other keyboards. There were a couple of problems I encountered while using this keyboard, too. If a word was autocorrected to another word after I pressed the space bar, I could not simply backspace and be given a list of words in the top bar (like I do in Google Keyboard). This meant I would have to retype any word that was wrongly autocorrected.

Also, when backspacing to add on to the previous word, the keyboard would sometimes randomly scramble the letters of the word I wanted to add on to. Finally, the keyboard would often overlap popups or boxes that were not covered up by other apps. Most notably, anytime I wanted to add a word to my dictionary, the button to press in the popup was covered by the keyboard. Thankfully, I believe all of these problems can be fixed through a software update.

Conclusion

I have enjoyed using Facemoji Keyboard over the past week, and I would recommend it to anyone looking to add some personal flair to their typing experience. As for me, I will be switching back to Google Keyboard for the typing speed improvements alone, but I will definitely miss the ease of sending GIFs with Facemoji Keyboard. For those of you looking to try this keyboard out, you can grab it for free from the Play Store.

The Pixel and Pixel XL ruled Black Friday weekend sales

0

The Pixel and Pixel XL are possibly the best Android devices to ever be released, and for that reason along with a few others, the devices are selling out everywhere. In fact, a new report from Fortune shows that the Pixel outsold every other flagship device on the market.

In order to get a proper gauge of how sales were going to be, the number of activations was calculated for four weekends leading up to Black Friday weekend. Once the average of total activations was calculated, this provided the base to be able to determine how well devices would be selling over last weekend.

localytics-pixel-activations

The Pixel led the charge with an increase of 112% of total activations when compared to the base average. Galaxy S7 activations came in second with an increase of 36%, and Apple’s iPhone 7 only increased by a measly 13%.

Of the total number Pixels that were activated over the course of the weekend, 46% of those came from Verizon which isn’t surprising considering the deals that were being offered. Starting Black Friday, Verizon was offering a $432 bill credit spread across 24 months, amounting to being able to get the base model Pixel for just $10 per month.

The remaining 54% of Pixel activations came from either the Google Store or through other means of obtaining the new device.

Let us know whether you were able to take advantage of one of the deals going around fo the Pixel or Pixel XL in the comments below.
